matters Grosvenor highlights essential local happenings
MOTCOMB STREET OPENING The much-anticipated official reopening of the nowpedestrianised Motcomb Street is on 27 September. It will be a celebration of the finalised works of one of Belgravia’s most wellloved streets, which has undergone extensive renovation. There will be a number of gourmet food offerings from local retailers that are guaranteed to satisfy discerning palates. Meanwhile, those with a sweet tooth (read everybody) can find their cravings sated by treats from a range of shops. Live music in the form of jazz and folk bands will further add a sense of occasion to the event, which will bring traders, locals and visitors alike to the street. This occasion is sure to be a huge success, especially in light of the works which meant that there wasn’t a Motcomb Street party this year. The Journal is looking forward to seeing you there! giving and receiving Grosvenor’s has been gifted a historic painting by Stefan Turnbull, the part-owner of Cubitt House. Barry Hirst, Stefan’s former business partner, had the painting commissioned back when The Alfred Tennyson pub – previously known as The Pantechnicon – was first fitted out. The painting, which depicts the scene of a fire on Motcomb Street, the home of The Alfred Tennyson, doesn’t fit in with the brand-new refurbishment scheme at the pub, which started on 7 August and is set to be finished by the start of September. The painting has therefore been handed over to the safe keeping of Grosvenor. Adam Quigley of Cubitt House was present to pass on the gift to the charge of Ashley Sill and Matthew Arnold, of Grosvenor’s North Belgravia team. Ashley Sill, asset manager for North Belgravia comments:

the crown jewels Elizabeth Gage on her MBE, five decades in the jewellery industry and her international following francesca lee-rogers

I
n June, Belgraviabased jeweller Elizabeth Gage was named in the Queen’s 2017 Birthday Honours List to receive an MBE for her services to business as a jeweller. “I feel extremely proud to have been chosen by the Queen and to become part of the British establishment. That, to me, is wonderful; somehow it strikes an ancient chord,” she tells me at her West Halkin Street showroom. Indeed, after more than five decades in the jewellery industry, Britain has produced one of the greatest jewellery designers of all time and she is admired the world over. Yet little did she know how successful she would be when deciding on her career path all those years ago. Hailing from an artistic family, with a mother and grandmother who painted, as did her mother, as well as writing “wonderful poetry”, Elizabeth has always been “good at making things with her hands”. This
innate creative dexterity especially came to light when she was bedridden due to as a young child, having fallen ill with bovine TB. During her convalescence, she began to create objects such as doll’s clothes, cardboard cut-out houses and boxes.
Her work is unique, distinctive and of huge historical importance “It also taught me patience,” she says pertinently. Much later, when deciding what to study, Elizabeth chanced upon a design course at the Chelsea School of Art, and then a jewellery design course at Sir John Cass College. During her six years of training, she set about becoming a master goldsmith, and learnt the art of diamond-setting and enamelling.
The first piece of jewellery that she made was a pin from a sheet of gold, followed by a ring set with amethysts and peridots. As the popularity of her work grew, she started to employ goldsmiths so she could concentrate on her designs, which she describes as “tremendously helpful”. Those in the industry started to hear about Elizabeth Gage and, in 1968, she received her first major commission from Cartier in New York to create a special collection for its new catalogue. “I was excited about it – although less so when I realised I had to pay for it upfront myself, and then they would reimburse me!” she says frankly. However, fortunately, it paid off: “They liked it very much and more orders followed.” By the 1970s, she was selling her pieces to an independent retailer, called Annabel Jones, in both Britain and the United States and many American individuals read about her in Connoisseur
Magazine and they came to Elizabeth’s Albemarle Street in their droves. More recently, she has moved her premises to West Halkin Street to bring the production and sales team under one roof. However, wherever Elizabeth goes, she has a strong and loyal international following. Her work is unique, distinctive and of huge historical importance – Elizabeth is also a historian– as many of her pieces reference eras or moments in history, such as the Renaissance period. Indeed, the Renaissance collection was “inspired by the magnificent royal crowns whose dazzling stones simply take your breath away.” Elizabeth talks with such passion, I ask her what’s next after receiving her MBE. “Nothing is ever the end. William Monroe reviews the Big Matt burger The Journal stepped into the realms of Hawksmoor Knightsbridge – feeling slightly worse for wear after a late night – and found in the Big Matt burger a timely antidote. The impressive creation is a tribute by Hawksmoor’s executive chef Matt Brown to the McDonald’s Big Mac – a long-term staple of the fast-food giant’s menu. The Big Matt, however, far surpasses its counterpart when it comes to quality. It features two rare charcoal-grilled beef patties topped with Hawksmoor
special sauce, onions, pickles and Sparkenhoe Red Leicester cheese. The Journal gets a sugar kick as it samples the delights of a Sweet Tooth Tour in Belgravia FRANCESCA LEE-ROGERS
T
he tour commences at R Chocolate on Ebury Street, where I’m given a brief overview of the brand that was started by selfconfessed chocoholic Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, who had always wanted to start his very own chocolate shop. His dream realised, he also combined his love of elephants – he is patron of the Elephant Family charity – making it a key theme throughout. Sweet Tooth Tours founder, ex-Peggy Porschen, Pierre Hermé and Le Cordon Bleu trained pastry chef, Lynne Staartjes gives me an overview of the history of chocolate as I indulge in one of its hot chocolates and milk chocolate elephants filled with caramel. She tells me about the fact that chocolate was once used for its medicinal benefits – a fact that I can very much relate to.

However, it’s super busy (it has become quite the Instagram sensation) so we stop by Dominique Ansel Bakery instead for its Banoffee Paella, which is so sweet we only need the one generous portion between us. Back on the road, and the queue at Peggy’s has dissipated, so I take
out a Chocolate Salted Caramel cupcake to enjoy later. By this point, I’m certainly in need of a walk, so a half a mile saunter to Motcomb Street is welcome. Rococo Chocolates is next on the list and here I learn about the bean-to-bar process, which is followed by a chocolate tasting. My favourite is the Sea Salt Organic Milk Chocolate, which has a caramel flavour on the palette,
followed by a lingering saltysweetness. This also makes the sweet-to-salt transition to the next boutique – The Fine Cheese Co. – that much easier. Here we sample three cheeses, the Timsbury Ash Pyramid, Berkswell and Smokey Blue on lemon, sea salt and olive oil crackers as we wash them down with Van Nahmen Dornfelder Grape Juice. Share and share alike This is the concept of Venetian restaurant Tozi, where snacking’s encouraged and the Prosecco’s on draft francesca lee-rogers
N
ot many restaurants have a classic Italian car in the window. Yet a Fiat 500 with a cream exterior and red leather interior, certainly sets the scene at Tozi. From the exterior, one would never guess that the eatery is part of Park Plaza Victoria. This is, however, very welcome, as all too often hotel restaurants fail to cut the mustard as a standalone entity. The name Tozi is Venetian slang for a group of friends, so it’s only fitting that one of my nearest and dearest is with me to share in the experience. Prior to the meal, we take a pew in the bar, which has been impressively designed by Soho House founder Nick Jones, complete with warm wood, marble and pops of yellow. We’re impressed with the selection of drinks on offer: from home-made barrel-aged Negroni spirits to Amaro Tozi served straight from the barrel, as well as Italian bubbles, craft beers and boutique gins. There’s certainly plenty to choose from. My plus one opts for a refreshing

Watermelon Spritz, while I decide on Prosecco. Both are wellreceived, and along with some Italian nibbles, serve as the ultimate apéritif. The restaurant is vast and spread across two tiers, and is flooded with light thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. The open kitchen is also huge and it’s easy to get caught up in the moment watching the chefs work. However, it’s incredibly quiet for a Saturday lunchtime and there are more chefs than diners. I’m assured that this is often the case at the weekend though, and that
during the week it’s packed with business-lunchers, locals and hotel guests.
The rib of beef is paired perfectly with an Italian red Celebrating Venetian cuisine, chefs Daniele Pampagnin and Maurilio Molteni are at the helm of the cicchetti (sharing-style) concept. My guest and I delight in seven dishes (three to four per person is more than adequate) that arrive at the table at varying times. A standout dish is one of the restaurant’s specialities: the piadina with parma ham, stracchino and rocket. It’s both light
yet filling. The burrata, heritage tomatoes and basil is also worthy of a special mention as it melts in the mouth and the sweetness of the tomatoes cuts through the cheese. The rib of beef, meanwhile, is paired perfectly with an Italian red. Dessert follows and is the only slight disappointment of the meal: the chocolate and hazelnut tart with coconut sorbet is simply too bitter for me. All in all though, the offering at Tozi is impressive, and you can’t go wrong with the Italian concept; after, all sharing is caring. In the eye of the
beholder The Journal takes a look at Bijoux Medi-Spa, and what it offers its clients both in Belgravia and beyond francesca lee-rogers
O
ne would not necessarily know from the exterior of Bijoux Medi-Spa what lies within. Situated on Ebury Street, the Medi-Spa is a discreet destination for every beauty need. The founder is Dr Elisabeth Dancey, who helped to bring cosmetic medicine to the UK, and also introduced electroridopuncture and mesotherapy to our shores. It all began when Dr Dancey was working in nutritional medicine in Belgium. She explains: “One of my clients was overweight, so I created a diet plan for her. She then lost a lot of weight and was really happy, but she had cellulite, and asked me what was I going to do about it. She suggested mesotherapy [ fat-melting injections], and although I said I could refer her, she said that she wanted me to do it. So, one course later and two years on, I practised on her and the seed was sown.” After training all over northern Europe, Dr Dancey returned to London to set up her own practice in 1993. “Back then, cosmetic medicine wasn’t even a discipline or industry. I started with fillers, and it quickly
grew from there,” she says. Such was the innovation of the treatments that she was offering, she received significant press coverage and quickly built up a loyal client base. Based at her Belgravia practice for eight years, Bijoux Medi-Spa offers three treatment rooms for a range of concerns, with Dr Dancey specialising in the practice of injections and threading, line-smoothing, fillers, skin rejuvenation, minor skin surgery, a number of what are known as ‘soft’ facelifts and collagenboosting therapies. She tells me that one of the favourite parts of her job is seeing the positive effects that her treatments have on her clients. “One of the best parts of the job is to be able to change a client’s look in a natural way that helps to restore self-confidence.” Dr Dancey offers a range of treatments, but what is the most common concern, I ask? “Looking tired or people saying ‘Cheer up’”, she answers without hesitation. “Being accused of being grumpy or sad is mainly due to the shadows that appear on our face; we lose volume as we age. But this is something that we can address at Bijoux Medi-Spa.”

She continues: “The most popular treatment that I carry out uses neurotoxin, which modulates the desire to frown. You can use it as a lifting treatment. Fillers, on the other hand, help to restore the soft curve and roundness of the female face.” Dr Dancey’s work ethic speaks for itself, with half of her clients repeat patients who are still with her after more than 10 years. The same loyalty is also replicated by her staff, who have been with her for more than 11 years. Her team includes Jit Tobin, who specialises in Thai yoga and massage as well as hair removal, and Faye Parker, is a trained osteopath who has transferred her skills into cosmetic medicine, specialising in lasers, light-based treatments, and therapies that improve skin quality. None of Bijoux Medi-Spa’s staff are on commission, meaning there is no sales pressure and they genuinely recommend what they feel is needed. “Our clients always come first,” affirms Dr Dancey. As well as being a member of: the British College of Aesthetic Medicine, British Association of Sclerotherapists, Primary Care Dermatology Society, British Medical Association and General Medical Council, Dr Dancey is always furthering her skills with courses, and is especially interested in the impact that stress can have on the skin. “London is a stressed city; everyone is working really hard and juggling lots of things at once. There’s no one single answer or treatment for the best appearance: it’s a combination of everything. ROCK ON The Journal finds refined luxury and outstanding food in abundance at Rockliffe Hall Hotel WILLIAM MONROE

t’s a smooth-running process at Rockliffe Hall Hotel. Having braved various modes of public transport, the hushed tranquillity and friendly, organised staff at reception come as a soothing relief. After being shown round our room – a spacious New Hall Superior Twin that enjoys views out over the golf course – we change straight into swimwear, bathrobes and slippers before heading to the Spa Garden, keen to soak away the stresses of the day. The Spa Garden, a luxury hideaway adjacent to the main spa complex, features a fantastic infinityedge hot pool. It’s kitted out with hydrotherapy features, including powerful water jets and Jacuzzi-style massages, and you can order drinks to be served poolside. Such is the warmth of the water that you could easily wallow here even in the depths of winter. There’s also a sauna, water feature and heated relaxation loungers in the interior, where guests can treat themselves to complimentary refreshments. I’m loath to leave my watery cocoon, but the prospect of a Man Space Full Body Performance Massage is enough to tempt me out. My therapist gets to work as I lie face-down on the massage bed, the scent of herbs wafting through my nostrils. Full body means full body – my therapist applies warm oil before kneading my back, legs, arms and upper chest. The majority of it is relaxing, but she really goes to town on my back with her elbows – apparently the life of a journalist hunched over a computer is not conducive to having a back in full working order. A gentle scalp massage to finish sends me into sleep mode, before a refreshing peppermint tea is provided as I regain my bearings. With the knots eradicated, I have a spring in my step and
opt for a pre-dinner swim in the vast 20-metre pool. I also can’t resist trying out the Roman-style treatment rooms. These include an extraordinary Caldarium, which is essentially a steam room, and an Igloo: an ice-cold room designed to offset the heat and humidity of the Tropicarium and stimulate circulation. I last 30 seconds in the arctic conditions before jumping ship to the Tepidarium, with its warm climate, gentle music and heated beds. After my swim and spa session,

port of call before we hit the road is breakfast. After the previous evening’s excellent cuisine, we’re certainly not willing to pass up a full English. Our stay at Rockliffe Hall was a very pleasant one. Some of the modern furnishings weren’t to my taste, but the food and hospitality on offer more than makes up for any aesthetic doubts I had, and the level of service – whether that’s at the spa, reception, or The Orangery – is first-class. It’s ideal for a golfing weekend, as the hotel has its own 18-hole championship course, or a relaxing spa break breathing the fresh country air. it’s time for dinner at The Orangery, the hotel’s flagship 3AA Rosette restaurant headed up by executive chef Richard Allen. Before dining, my guest and I enjoy a drink in the elegant country-housestyle bar – the Garden of Eden cocktail, consisting of Hendrick’s Gin, elderflower liquor, lemon juice and sparkling apple, comes highly recommended. As you’d expect at a five-star establishment, the food is an artwork. Having opted for the Tasting Menu, we start off with a flavoursome mussel-and-leek risotto. The texture of the rice is superb and it sets a precedent that is repeated throughout the evening. The following duck-liver parfait, presented as a thin roll or log, with chamomile, pine nuts and Ibérico ham, is an unusual combination, but works surprisingly well. Next comes one of
the meal’s highlights: variations of beetroot with smoked goat’s curd. I’m not usually a beetroot fan, but this is superb. It’s amazingly fresh, featuring different types of beetroot sliced every which way, with a fantastic beetroot foam crowning the concoction. The sea bream falls of the bone at the touch of a knife and dovetails beautifully with a crab, clementine and sea-spinach bisque. The final dish before moving on to dessert options is a tender Lamb Best End – lamb tongue in a casserole-style sauce with harissa greens. A cassis featuring liquorice and roasted milk brings an end to our culinary journey, which has been accompanied by a superb wine flight served by head sommelier Daniel Jonberger, who brims with passion for his profession. After a good night’s rest, our final

The report comes after the South Kensington-based firm secured five sales in three of the area’s best addresses – Lennox Gardens, Pont Street and Egerton Gardens – in recent weeks. Milton Stone’s director, Sacha Moussaieff, said that the agency had seen a noticeable increase in offers and sales since Easter, particularly in Knightsbridge, where the company believes vendors are being more

Traditionally, the current period is the busiest time of the year for selling property. However, due to continued uncertainty in the market, which was inflated by the general election during the last quarter, some buyers are holding off for the time being. Despite experiencing a challenging quarter, we have seen some strong activity. The vendors that recognise the price-sensitive nature of the market and price their properties accordingly are securing a sale, which is encouraging. Other buyers tend to be looking to the rental market to avoid the stamp-duty taxes and we have seen increased lettings transactions as a result. 46
Having enjoyed a remarkably and perhaps surprisingly strong first two quarters of the year in terms of transactions, the traditional summer lull arrived in July. Preceded by the snap general election and surprise to investors of the close-run nature of the result, this quieter period came as no shock. And yet, despite the fall in the number of enquiries and viewings, there remains a sincere appetite from a select number of buyers that share one thing in common: namely, a desire for privacy and discretion. It has become apparent over the course of the year and is becoming even more pronounced in the summer months, that the appeal of the ‘off market’ transaction is on the rise. This and the success of sellers who have set realistic asking prices bodes well for the autumn market, with the return of everyone in time for the start of school terms.

A new initiative for the Meccano Building, 123-156 Buckingham Palace Road
The building is now united in single ownership of Gaw Capital. The proposal is to put two and a half floors on top of the building, set back, using the same grid design. The Colonnade, on the ground floor, will be retained, but the roof will be removed to open up the area. The plan includes a repainting of the white external metal work to dark grey. The shops will be altered to provide larger units and the archway to it, from the Eccleston Bridge, will be removed and the access will become more open and inviting. The completed development will deliver about 760 new jobs. Subject to the usual planning caveats, on first sight, this project seems acceptable. It is expected that an application for planning permission will be submitted.

Work is progressing well at Eccleston Place, which will become known as Eccleston Yards. Grosvenor is continuing to receive a strong level of interest from a mixture of operators that will deliver its vision. A meeting was held by the Chelsea Barracks Partnership on 13 July to update the community and to consult on phases 5B & 6A. A public consultation started on 15 July. One potential house is to be the biggest on the site (6A) at 22,000 sq ft. Phases 1 and 2, including the retail units and chapel are due to be completed by the end of 2018. Phase 4 will go out to tender soon. It was
