o, we’re here again. Another year closes and a new one welcomes us with open arms. It can be a time of reflection and resolution, and of excitement as you plan the year ahead. Or simply a time to stop and recharge. Ultimately, it’s all about you. What do you want? To plan your holiday schedule? If so, we’ve the latest openings (p.100), or head off-piste as Aman reopens its Courchevel outpost (p.102). Meanwhile, Jeremy Taylor takes his Bentayga on a tour (p.96) and we hop onboard some luxury yachts (p.128). To be inspired? Iain Tyrell of Cheshire Classic Cars fame shares his story with Kat Hannon on page 44, taking that leap of faith and listening to his heart – as well as Ferrari engines. Then there’s last minute present buying (p.92), new-season clothes (p.76), watches from Salon Prive (p.71) and luxurious kitchens (p.134). Oh, and a little advice on choosing your celebratory New Year bubbles (p.29) We share news of our chosen charity for 2017, too (p.110) – you’ll be hearing much more about the amazing work of the team at Variety, the children’s charity, but let us know if you want to get involved. To curl up with a good magazine? Without wishing to sound big headed, I think we’ve got that one covered, too. Wishing you a happy new year.

My life in CHESHIRE Joanne Tipper, Sales Manager at The Chester Grosvenor
H
aving grown up in Stoke-on-Trent and worked all over the UK, Joanne now finds herself ensconced in Chester’s luxury hospitality scene, helming the sales team at the beautiful Chester Grosvenor. “I love the diversity that the hotel industry brings and the people that you meet,” she explains. “The world is truly your oyster; you see some amazing places and meet some wonderful people who remain good friends always. Like every job, there are times when you look skywards and ask why – especially with the long hours – but when an event goes really well, or a bride and groom have the ‘best day of their life’, or you meet a guest who worked at the hotel many moons ago and has such wonderful memories, it all becomes worthwhile. “We are very lucky to have a fantastic team at The Grosvenor, too – through the years, they have always adapted to change and supported one another, and every person I come into contact with here is a true professional; this is their career and they thrive on making guests’ experiences really special.” So, with experience of so many different places under her belt, what is it that really sets Chester apart? “I’m out and about a lot with my role and see many clients from all over the UK, and when I show them images of Chester, they marvel at the history,” Joanne says. “So many people have heard of Chester – which is great – but they’ve never been. When I talk about the rich history – highlighting the Cathedral, the Rows, The Roman Walls – people are awe-struck at how beautiful the city is and now, with the new Cultural Quarter and the Storyhouse theatre development, it’s really a new era. “It’s a fantastic area to live in, too. Jaunty Goat Coffee Company has become a favourite if I’m out shopping and cocktails at Red Door are a must when I’m out with the girls – then onto Luke’s Place. If it’s been a long day and we can’t be bothered to cook, we often go to The Grosvenor in Alford, and – though it sounds a bit cliché – one of the best meals I’ve ever experienced was actually here at The Chester Grosvenor. Before I started working here I wanted to get a feel for the hotel, so my husband organised a table at The Simon Radley. Being a vegetarian I never have great expectations, but the eight-course taster menu was outstanding – each course was an experience of flavours, tastes and textures, and the best bit was the bread trolley: eight different breads to try (the walnut and red wine was definitely my favourite).” (chestergrosvenor.com)

...with SANKI BAYANDAI , Head chef at Rosso What is your favourite ingredient? I have been a chef for more than 10 years, and have had the pleasure of working with some great chefs and many different ingredients, but my all-time favourite to work with and eat would have to be wagyu beef. My partner and kids enjoy Japanese cuisine, so that has a strong influence upon my tastes too. What is your favoUrite food? “I like simple, home-cooked food – especially dishes that remind me of my roots. I grew up in Mongolia. We have a dish called boodog. This is Mongolia’s version of a barbeque, where the meat is cooked from the inside to the outside of the animal (usually goat or marmot) using hot stones. It’s often a craving of mine. What’s your desert island recipe? It may come as a surprise that my desert island dish is my mother’s homemade bread with Urum – Mongolian butter. What’s your favourite piece of kitchen kit? My favourite piece, as any chef will tell you, is his knife, but I really enjoy using an Inka grill – it gives the meats I work with that edge, and I feel it is the best way to cook great pieces of meats. SPOTLIGHT ON... VICTOR’S EATERY, HALE Words: LOUISA CASTLE
I
t’s a Thursday night, and everyone seems to be at Victor’s. There’s a buzz at the bar area and tables of early dinners, late business meetings and girly-catch-ups all around. We’re here for the sushi, as my husband is obsessed with finding the best sushi outside Japan. I am confident but also anxious – I have a week’s worth of housework depending on it. Greeted warmly by Sasha, our server for the evening, and front of house manager Andy, we begin our culinary journey, crisp Chardonnay in hand. We’re handed the menus, on which there’s sushi, sashimi, rolls, small plates, grill, market fish and sides, with the team on hand to explain if needed – really, there’s something to suit everyone and every occasion. Previously, I’ve been with the girls, and we’ve shared some of the small plates, and I’ve held meetings over brunch and brought in the parents for a traditional three-course affair. Make it what you wish, there’s no pressure. Apart from when the sushi platter (£18) arrived, and it was time to put my money (or, rather, housework) where my mouth was. Seared teriyaki beef roll, salmon sashimi, salmon nigirizushi and tempura spider crab roll, served with ginger, wasabi and soy to taste. I am a recent convert to sushi, the standard having been set by the sushi bars around Tokyo’s fish market. But I won my bet. The rice was neither too hard nor too soft, sticky without being too sticky – ideal. And the fish was light, fresh and full of flavour. A big tick to me. Satisfied (and, I confess, a little smug), we revelled in our window seat, taking in the decor
22
and planning to try our hand at sushi making at home. I fear this will not happen, and Victor’s may well become a favourite on speed dial. Our small plates arrived: truffled mushroom ravioli with a porcini cream sauce (£8), and salt and pepper squid with squid ink aioli (£8.95). As a truffle fiend, the ravioli was a highlight (they even bring a spoon so you don’t waste any sauce), while the squid was light and tender. And so for the main course. There’s choice to suit all tastes – from burger to fresh lobster – but our eyes were caught by the beef Wellington (£25) and miso-marinated black cod (£24). The beef fillet was pink and juicy, with minimal pastry, cooked to perfection, and served with spinach, mash and red wine jus – a dish made for winter evenings. My cod – served with crispy quinoa – was sweet and flaked from the fillet with ease, the only way that I have found which makes this superfood appealing to me. It was light yet buttery with no need of any accompaniments. Our interest was piqued by the chocolate fondue sharing plate delivered to a nearby table (next time), but we opted for the lemon meringue pie and black forest gateau (both £7.50). The deconstructed pie was zingy and sweet, served with raspberry and marshmallow, while the gateau was incredibly indulgent. Victor’s delivered. On food, on friendliness and on tastebud appeal. The team is very knowledgeable and proud, and it shows in the standard of food and service you receive. Victor’s 169 Ashley Road, Hale, WA15 9SD (0161 9284651; victorshale.co.uk)

From death threats in Sierra Leone to organic farming in Denbighshire, life has been a book of many chapters for Lord Newborough. He meets Gemma Knight to talk Michelin-stars, sustainable farming and Christmas feasts
L
ord Newborough – 8th Baron Newborough, Robert Wynn to his friends – boasts a more exciting biography than most. “Although I was born and brought up to farm, I went off and did everything else other than farming as soon as I possibly could,” he tells me – and this is no exaggeration. He was born in 1949 on the 12,500-acre Rhug Estate in Denbighshire, North Wales, when his parents, the 7th Baron Newborough and his wife, Rosamund Lavington Barbour, were living in a farmhouse on the Estate because the main house, Rhug Hall, had been let during the war as a girls’
school. In 1954, Robert, his parents and two sisters moved back into the main house, and he was shortly afterwards sent away for what he describes as “a chequered career at boarding school”. “I was never the budding academic, and sport very much came top of my list,” he tells me congenially. “My father’s expectations for me were great, and when I eventually left school to go on to agricultural college and then as a student on various farms, I knew in my father’s eyes I was definitely on the right track! My father wanted me to see the world and stand on my own two feet, so when I was twenty he gave
“I have great team working for me and without 24

me £100 and a one-way ticket to Australia and said that he didn’t want to see me again for at least a year. Two years later, I had a call from him asking when I was coming back!” His twenties and early thirties were spent running a private air charter business out of Heathrow (which he eventually sold to Air Europe), then a business manufacturing printed circuit boards for the space and defence industry, which was then sold to British Aerospace. “After that, I had the idea of investing in a joint venture with the Sierra Leone government,” he explains, “running their very rich natural fish resource. At that time, their waters were freely available for any country to use and, as it transpired, boats were using fishing as a cover for gun and drug running, people smuggling, diamond and gold smuggling and many other unsavoury activities. Many obstacles were put in our way to try and ensure that our project would not work, including attempts at planting drugs in my luggage, sabotaging our ship and sending death threats. In 1995, after five interesting and challenging years, Sierra Leone had become so dangerous that sadly we were given no choice other than to abandon what we were doing.” As it turned out, this was something of a blessing in disguise. He returned to the Rhug Estate to help with its running, inheriting it in 1998 when his father passed away. With a passion for sustainable organic farming, he immediately set about turning it from a low-input, low-output farm into a sustainable, organic farm, where the livestock could enjoy an organic diet and live free range. “Both my wife and I ate organic meat and produce whenever we could through the 90s,” he explains. “There was a series of food scares then, and we both shared the same concerns on global warming and sustainability. For me, farming from that point on became interesting, challenging and rewarding. One of the nice things about organic farming is the high standards of animal welfare. Not only is organic meat the best meat you can buy, it is healthier and much better for the environment. Organic farming really is sustainable food production at its best.”
Since then, the Rhug Estate has gone from strength to strength, winning awards and hosting the Michelin inspector in recognition of its appearance on many Michelin-star menus across the world, including eateries in Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Dubai (including the Burj al Arab) and Abu Dhabi. “We started with a workforce that totalled nine people, all involved in working on the farm,” Lord Newborough tells me. “We were then farming about 2,300 acres and now we farm nearly 8,000. The big difference is that we have developed into a multi diverse farming, retailing, wholesaling, property and greenenergy business employing 110 people: a far cry from what it was in 1998. “I have a great team working for me and without them we wouldn’t be where we are today. My love and passion is going out into the field – my staff, for better or for worse, would describe my involvement as ‘hands on’ – and we are always looking at ways of improving and innovating.” The Rhug Estate produces organic beef, lamb, chicken, turkeys and geese for the Christmas season, and there’s even a herd of wild bison, with bison dishes being the most popular in the acclaimed farm bistro – aptly named the Bison Grill. The award-winning Farm Shop has also become a popular day-out destination, with customers driving from Manchester, Chester and Birmingham at the weekend, spending the day driving through the stunning countryside of North Wales, tucking into a hearty breakfast, lunch or tea in the Bison Grill, then enjoying a bit of retail therapy in the Farm Shop before heading home. Organic turkey, goose and gifts from the Farm Shop can be ordered online or by phone for delivery to your door. Think you are up to speed with the latest sparkling wine trends? We speak to Fizz Festival founder Janet Harrison for her predictions on what’s hot and what’s not for Italian sparklers
S
o you drink Prosecco, right? You might have noticed an even bigger choice of late and also the fact that it is really starting to increase in price. But how do you know the good from the bad? When shopping for Prosecco, look out for DOCG rather than DOC on the label. This means it is exclusively produced in the hills of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene zone which is made up of 15 communes, and takes its name from the zone’s twin capitals: Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, surrounded by absolutely stunning steep vineyards. A nice supermarket own brand DOCG is Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference. Priced at £10, it has delicious apricot, pear and citrus flavours. If you want to try the ‘really good stuff’ you need to look out for Cartizze Hill on the label. Not quite so easy to find yet, but excellent for boasting “of course we only drink Cartizze Hill” among friends. Cartizze comes from a sub-zone which covers just 107 hectares of vineyards, lying amid the steepest hillsides of San Pietro di Barbozza, Santo Stefano and Saccol, in the commune of Valdobbiadene. Bisol Cartizze is available in Selfridges (at a rather eye-watering £31). I guarantee, you’ll start to see more of these wines soon. By the way, did you know that there are different levels of sweetness in Prosecco? If you like less sugar you need to look for Brut or Extra Brut. Confusingly Extra Dry or Dry on the bottle means there is more sugar! Finally, Franciacorta wines are creating a real buzz in the wine
Franciacorta wines are creating a real buzz in the wine industry
industry (you heard it here first). They are sparkling wine from the Province of Brescia (Lombardy) with DOCG status. They hope to take a share of Prosecco’s glory and are worth a try if you are an Italian fizz-fanatic. Majolini Franciacorta Pas Dose 'Aligi Sassu' 2006, priced at £25, is a lovely award-winning wine you can get from Italian wine specialists Bat and Bottle. The Pas Dose is like zero dosage in Champagne, so a dry style but a quality wine, aged for 30 months. It has flavours of lemon, grapefruit and the slightest wild honey, mineral and ripe herb. Having said all this, wine is a very subjective thing, but the more you try, the better you’ll buy! As the Italians might say, ‘Va tutto bene’, and they’d be right. Janet Harrison runs Cracking Wine, delivering fun and informal wine tastings in the North of England. She founded the UK’s first Fizz Festival which takes place in Altrincham each year as well as regular Fizz Clubs in Cheshire (crackingwine.co.uk) 29

Making the right choices A new year is dawning and this can be a key time for so many of us for so many different reasons. Melissa Porter addresses some of the most common concerns I can’t afford... a new party outfit/to throw a party/to celebrate the way my partner wants to. You are alive and therefore have some money. With the money you have, notice the different ways you choose to allocate your finances and consider if this month you might choose to spend less on something else in order to free up some money for that outfit or party. When I hear people complain about lack of money, I encourage them to notice that how they chose to prioritise their finances has always been their choice. If you are choosing not to purchase a new outfit for a NYE party, it may be because you have chosen different priorities for your money vs. the default thought you cannot afford it. Less victim, more awareness of different choices available. When I look back over my year nothing’s changed. Same partner, same life. New work opportunities, new types of friends, new toys and new experiences are all available to us when we change our thinking. Change starts from the inside and then, via our choices, affects what we see outside ourselves. Know that your thoughts affect your choices, and these affect your experiences, which in turn affect your emotions, and the cycle continues. Nothing will change outside yourself until you change your faulty thinking. Hire a coach.
Whatever you’re choosing to do and think right now, do and think something completely different. Maybe staying at home is the perfect loving choice for you. I feel obliged to accept a party invitation for fear of upsetting the hosts. But you’re happy to upset yourself? The person you live with 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. I wonder how you self talk? What are your beliefs? I must suck it up? Deal with it? Put up and shut up for the sake of peace? This is the moment you need to get out of the way of yourself. To stop blocking your own sparkle and to remove the mask of BS you choose to wear. I dare you to courageously suck it up and decline the invitation and deal with the consequences, like the powerful being you truly are. Let your fireworks sparkle daily, friends. Have fun and feel passion in each and every moment. See you in 2017. Melissa is a professional, certified transformational life coach (melissaportercoach.com)
I’m a loser. I have no party to go to NYE/ No one to spend it with/I want to stay at home. Your choices have got you right where you are and with this awareness you may well be your own version of a loser. Or not. Let this sentiment propel you into action. The action of a new way of being. A new way of thinking.

Kat Hannon discovers Iain Tyrell’s passion for classic cars, jazz and photography
“M
y first word was car!” Iain Tyrrell tells me while reminiscing about his childhood. By the age of five, he could identify almost every make and model. Iain is laid back, approachable, openminded, and very creative. The fascination with cars came from his parents: on his father’s side there’s a history of motor racing, and his uncle on his mother’s side was an engineer who designed ship engines. It’s understandable, then, that, as a teenager, Iain wanted to be a car designer. When his father bought him his first car (a Mini costing just £50), Iain wasted no time in taking it apart; putting it
back together again; tuning and hotting it up; repainting it; and designing a unique dashboard. Mechanics, more than design, had truly got under his skin so, after leaving school, Iain took a job working with his father to pass the time. His talents were quickly spotted, however, by the owner of a Southport-based Rolls Royce and Bentley service garage, who took Iain on to study mechanics and technical drawing. Aged just 22, Iain decided to take these experiences back to his hometown of Wallasey where he established Tyrrell Engineering. The business quickly grew to nine staff members, five mechanics, and many trainees over the years. Ten years after the establishment of Tyrell Engineering, Iain, whose passion for cars is rivalled only by his passion for the performing arts, went into the music industry. He appeared

live several times, performing with the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra with Claire Sweeney as a special guest. In 1998 he made a live demo of the concert, which caught the attention of the legendary American jazz musician, Ben Tucker, who asked Iain to come and sing with him. Tucker’s former musical collaborators read like a Who’s Who of jazz: he played with Sarah Vaughn, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis, and was a member of the prestigious US Jazz Hall of Fame.
Iain can diagnose a Ferrari's mechanical issues simply by listening to the engine Tucker dubbed Iain ‘The Frank Sinatra of Europe’, and the pair performed together on NBC’s Breakfast programme. This spurred Iain on to return to the UK and find an agent in London. Work started on producing a concert, complete with 27-piece orchestra, at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall, but the vision was never realised. Ticket sales were slow, and the project was abandoned. "The whole thing went splat," Iain told me, with his characteristically refreshing candour. In 1999, Iain had another life-changing experience. An ill friend needed lifesaving treatment and support. In his hour of need, Iain found god and became a Born Again Christian. Just four years after this pivotal moment in Iain’s life, he was approached by someone asking him about his first love: cars.

Spurred on by this, in 2004 Iain established Cheshire Classic Cars, which launched in 2005 near Hawarden airport. With his then-business partner, Iain quickly built up the stock of classic cars. The love for cars that had pervaded Iain’s formative years endured. One of the reasons Iain started Cheshire Classic Cars was because of his uncanny ability to diagnose a Ferrari’s mechanical issues simply by listening to the engine. His many influential clients indicate the esteem in which he’s held. His collection includes those iconic James Bond cars, the Aston Martin DB6 and DB9, and, most recently, the Lamborghini Miura, star of The Italian Job, which he found and restored in 2015. Iain’s classic car collection is quite simply the finest in Cheshire, if not in the world. But that humble Mini, bought for him by his father when Iain was a teenager, remains important in spirit if not in actuality: even today you’ll find Iain’s 82-year-old father working closely alongside him, checking fuel cans, lending a helpful hand, and being described as a sweetheart by almost anyone he meets. So, what is the future for Iain Tyrrell? I suggested that his many talents might best be suited to singing on a film’s soundtrack. Indeed,

His pictures are redolent of high-end car ads, as he shoots with long exposures and light that combine to produce stunning results he has already united his passions by recording a cover of Matt Monro’s classic Italian Job song ‘On Days Like These’ (available on YouTube). He’s also busy filming a six-part TV series based on his discovery of that legendary Lamborghini Miura, a car that was long believed to have written off during the filming of The Italian Job, the opening sequence of which Iain is recreating. "The cross overs in media and classic cars are amazing," he reports. Finally, yet another string to Iain’s bow is his love for photography. His interest and skills surpass those of an amateur: he really understands his cars, knowing almost instinctively how best to photograph them in order to create a powerful visual narrative. His pictures are redolent of high-end car ads, as he shoots with long exposures and light that combine to produce stunning results – as you can see for yourself across these pages. My final question to Iain was – of course – which car he had driven to our meeting. The answer is delivered with a smile: "A Porsche". (cheshireclassiccars.co.uk)

50 Shades of Grey in 2017 In her new look column, Liz Taylor talks, new beginnings, bold approaches and fresh ideas for the year ahead
W
ith an exciting events’ diary leading us into next year, this is the month I pull up my socks and face the challenges and opportunities ahead. A blend of new ideas is the unique culmination of travels, cultures and trends from across the globe, fused with cuttingedge fashion, culinary delights, musical talent and eclectic people. 2016 presented uncompromising challenges, allowing us to enter 2017 with a chance to maximise on change. Pushing back boundaries is du rigueur. My ethos is to take the impossible, and deliver the dream. Here are my top six ideas, trends and styles for 2017:
tulips, walls of magnificent hydrangeas – all providing a breathtaking focal point. Allow your imagination to run wild.
4. Please, sir, can I have some more! You eat with your eyes. A pyramid of rice wrapped inside a banana leaf, placed alongside Asian-inspired shellfish and a tiny dipping sauce, bring a mouth-watering plate to the party. But be assured, on your departure you may grab a slice of pizza from the van parked outside the front gate. Food is a vital ingredient and its importance should not be underestimated – be creative, be innovative – it’s not what you serve, it’s how you serve it.
1. Monochrome takes a back seat From the pale to the vibrant, shades of one colour create a striking effect. From lilacs to a deep purple, with a splash of metallic for drama. 50 shades of grey – a gun metal to pale silver – taking in all the hues along the way. Or a pale pink peony to deep red rose – a beautiful colour palette.
5. Bring your own cocktail bar to the party
2. Let there be light
6. And finally
Merging together computercontrolled theatrical lighting with strings of oversized Edison bulbs suspended over rustic metal, tarnished wood or coloured mirror, is the secret ingredient that turns fantasy into reality.
Every successful party embraces an element of anticipation – so whether you print your invite on a bar of chocolate, a miniature bottle of prosecco or a festival wrist band, create a sense of excitement from the very start. Get people talking. Build the expectation. Set the devotees of social media alight. Who needs Bake Off? Take this recipe and put it in a blender. Pour. Serve. And the enjoy the party.
3. Flowers no longer stand alone in a vase They are suspended from a roof, creating magnificent canopies, which become a ceiling of floral decadence. Giant trees created from individual
Place it at the heart of the event. Sharing a mojito in a miniature porcelain bath with 12 straws can break the ice at any occasion. Drop in a smoke bomb, and watch your guests savour the flavour in total amazement.

Inspired by Denise Welch, Natalie Anglesey asks if you have ever thought of dramatically changing your life to achieve cherished goals?

ell, that’s exactly what happened to Wilmslow-based actress Denise Welch and her husband, artist Lincoln Townley. They first met in a London club five years ago and, in spite of predictions to the contrary, turned their lives around and remain happily married three years later. What is more important to Denise and Lincoln is that they have both been alcohol free for that period of time – although at one stage their mutual alcohol addiction nearly destroyed their relationship. Sitting comfortably in their stylish Wilmslow home, Denise speaks frankly: “It was only when Lincoln threatened to end our relationship if I didn’t follow his example and stop drinking, that I got the wake-up call I needed," Denise admits. “I’m proud to say I also gave up self-medicating other substances, stopped smoking and I’ve never felt better.” Denise was already established as a successful actress when they met. She was also married to actor Tim Healy with whom she had two children: Matthew Healy, a member of the successful rock band ‘the 1975’, and Louis, born in 2001. Known for her roles in Soldier, Soldier and playing Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street,
59
in 2000 the producers wanted a storyline involving Natalie having a miscarriage, but Denise, then pregnant with Louis, refused and left. After her first baby Matthew and once again with Louis, like many other mothers, Denise was plunged into a serious depression. “The help I was given just didn’t work and I tried to self-medicate on booze and, later, drugs. I’m not proud of that but I am proud of where I am now.” Denise threw herself into work on series like Where The Heart Is, Holby City, Casualty, Doctors, The Bill and Waterloo Road. She also won Celebrity Big Brother. During much of that time she was also a regular panellist on ITV’s Loose Women; indeed it was on the show that she announced that her marriage with Tim was over. Soon afterwards, she became engaged to Lincoln, now her PR manager, and they married in Portugal. Like Denise, Lincoln had been married but was divorced with a son – now 25 year old – with whom he has a good relationship. But Lincoln also knew about the problems of depression, exacerbated by drink and drugs, at first hand. “After leaving school, the urge to get a job and earn money led me to become a salesman and I sold vans, then property as an estate agent in Soho. The money was good so we celebrated with alcohol. “Working in Soho meant I saw addiction and excess at first hand but you don’t realise you are also becoming one of those consumed by excess. I ended up working for Peter Stringfellow and we remain friends to this day. But when Denise and I became a couple I knew things had to change.” Being her PR manager was not for Lincoln. “I needed to be sober to sustain the momentum of drive and determination to make a new career and that was not an easy journey. But we had tremendous mutual support. I started painting as part of my therapy and it was like a light went on. I knew this is what I wanted to do.”
60
Now as one of the fastest rising names in contemporary art, Lincoln candidly admits with a grin “I’ve been turned down 93 times by Art Galleries in London. They just can’t stand me”. Indeed, he’s filming a documentary about that fact. Now an internationally recognised artist commanding in excess of £55,000 a painting, he’s been described by Sir Michael Caine as “the new Andy Warhol”. They met again recently at Lincoln’s latest exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery. “Sir Michael has been a tremendous support and loved my Hollywood Collection in which I painted stars like Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro. My love of painting began as a young lad when my grandad showed me an apple and asked me to draw it using only eight
“I needed to be sober to sustain the momentum of drive and determination to make a new career and that was not an easy journey” lines. He was an amateur artist like my dad who also encouraged me to draw. My first collection was called Hunger in which I was painting my own pain, and I recognise that in others.” The ongoing ICONS Collection, seen at London’s Portico Gallery in Somerset House, was initially inspired by early portraits of Russell Brand, Charlie Sheen and Nick Nolte, known for their troubled lifestyles. The proceeds from their pictures went to the ABR Trust (The Abstinence Based Recovery Trust). “ICONS is a continued celebration of notable exponents across the spectrums of sport, music, film and television,” explains Lincoln. With further portraits of Leonardo di Caprio, Sam Mendes and John Cleese, it’s established him in Los Angeles where, for the last couple of years, he’s been Artist in Residence at BAFTA LA. He was asked to paint Jodie Foster, Samuel L Jackson, Ewan McGregor and Ricky Gervais which,

when he showed me that particular work, I discovered was covered in crystals! His portraits of Prince and David Bowie recently sold for $300,000 and $250,000 dollars respectively. When the arts establishment first rejected his work, undeterred Lincoln set out to create his own outlets, initially in hotel chains, galleries in Soho and now in Mayfair’s Maddox Gallery, with much of his work sold abroad. “It’s about focus, drive, and not taking no for an answer. I want to make the most of my time on this planet." “I believe all men have an ability to consume so much that what they consume often ends up consuming them. When I think back four years ago after showing my first piece – someone remarked they didn’t want a screaming face on their wall – so it’s amazing to think where I am now. My new collection is called Surprise but I can’t tell you too much about it – otherwise it wouldn’t be one,” Lincoln jokes.

“They wanted sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll but depression’s far more than that” Denise has also extended her career. In 2010 her best-selling autobiography Pulling Myself Together, was published. "They wanted sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, but depression’s far more than that.” Her follow-up book Starting Over, two years later, also proved a success. Her first fictional novel, If They Could See Me Now, has gone into paperback and her second novel is due to be published soon. But there’s no way Denise has given up acting. She looks and feels good and has allowed her blonde hair to return to its natural brown. This year she made a guest appearance on EastEnders and finished filming Boy Meets Girl. “We were all so proud to be working on the first television sitcom featuring transgender,” she beams. “I’ve also made my first film – it’s only a short to be shown at film
festivals. It’s a bit of a family affair because Louis is in it, because he’s a good little actor, and Matt’s doing the music. But it’s a start!” How have they fared over the seasonal celebrations, I asked Denise? “We celebrated my dad’s 80th in Tyneside and were all there except Matt who was touring. But he sent a video that night in which he had 10,000 people at his gig singing Happy Birthday to his grandad – who was thrilled to bits. We always have my ex-husband Tim and his wife for Christmas dinner – so we’ve salvaged some of our long relationship for the sake of our two brilliant boys.” Content in their own company, I wondered if their sobriety affected their party invitations and Lincoln chuckled. “If we see people starting to get really drunk we just quietly disappear and, by then, they don’t even notice!”

Antiques Art and antique collecting has, in the past, been labelled a pensioner’s game. Gabriel Berner encourages us to think again
V
intage designer watches and jewellery, modern art and sculpture, sleek designer furniture and all manner of quirky antiques fall under the broad art and antiques umbrella, catering to younger tastes by the bucket-load. As The Antiques & Fine Art Fair returns to The Mere Golf Resort & Spa in February, what better time to make a whistle-stop tour through the world of art and antiques buying, dispelling a few of those antique collecting myths on the way?
What is an antique and why buy one?
Strictly speaking, an item has to be at least 100 years old to be called an antique. However, later 20th century pieces, commonly referred to as vintage, make up a good chunk of this industry, too, and can be just as sought after. It goes without saying that antiques, art and collectibles, by their very nature, are rare – often unique. But they do not need to cost a fortune and there is a wealth of diverse material out there starting from less than retail prices to considerably more.
Using antiques as furnishing tools is among the best ways to add character and personality to a room. It is no secret that an increasing number of millennials are shunning the IKEA-style flat-pack living in favour of items that have been around longer than they have and which their friends won't have seen anywhere else. Not only do antiques have oodles of character, patina and a sense of history, they are built to last and often made from better materials than in new mass-produced furnishings. After all, what better way to show off that

sophisticated country house look or retro ‘Mad Men’ modernism than with the real things? Value for money is another trump card for antiques. Unlike a brand new piece of furniture or the latest watch, which often decrease in value over time, antiques will hold their value, and even increase in value over the years. That said, it is not a “get-rich-quick” industry, but with an erratic stock market and paltry returns from savings accounts, the time is ripe to consider art and antiques as long-term investments. Granted, it may not be the most conventional way to make money, but provided you do your homework, there are potentially impressive long-term returns. But before you start seeing pound signs, it is important to note that there are plenty of risks involved. Just like any market, fashions and tastes change over time. This means that something that is not valuable now may become so in the future, and vice versa. A top tip is to invest in what you can live with and buy the best quality you can afford. Another tick for the antiques camp is the environmental element. A new chest of drawers made in China has a carbon footprint 16 times higher than the antique equivalent per year, according to the research commissioned by the International Antiques and Collectors Fairs (IACF) a few years ago.
How to buy? Acquiring art and antiques is much easier than many people imagine, with fairs and auction houses bending over backwards to provide a convenient and positive buying experience. Far from being the closed-off world that people believe it is, prospective buyers are encouraged to handle, examine and ask questions, with many trade professionals happy to share their knowledge. It is important to note here that, unlike other industries, such as banking, the art and antiques industry is unregulated, so buying from a vetted fair with certified dealers is important. The two best UK trade associations are the British Antique Dealers' Association (BADA) and LAPADA, the Association of Art & Antiques Dealers. You will need to insure any antiques you buy, but premiums need not be expensive, especially if you have only a few pieces. On the fine art section of a typical mid or high-net-worth policy, an item valued at £5,000 shouldn’t cost more that £20 or £30. So, with the above in mind, head to The Mere Golf Resort & Spa this February and join interior decorators, corporate buyers and many others, as they peruse the stands of some 30 specialist dealers (many from BADA and LAPADA) offering for sale a huge variety of items spanning the centuries. Prices range from a few hundred pounds into the tens of thousands, with free parking and refreshments available throughout the day. Go on, discover for yourself why art and antiques are not such an old folks’ pastime after all. The Antiques & Fine Art Fair supported by NFU Mutual, Knutsford, 24 to 26 February 2017. POP! Imagine your favourite photo transformed into a personally illustrated work of vibrant pop-art – genius!
I
n the early hours of one morning sifting through favourite photographs of his family on his laptop, Daniel Davidson hit upon a great idea. Why not create works of art to celebrate these images – and Love and Colour was born. As a musical creative, producing designs for album covers and T-shirts, Daniel, whose work has featured on the cover of Saatchi art and music magazine, certainly has impressive credentials and, despite being a relatively young company, Love and Colour has grown exponentially. Daniel is even receiving commissions from Europe, having recently sent portraits to Switzerland and Australia If you have a favourite photograph you want to celebrate, all you do is email it to Daniel, who reproduces the detail in a personally hand-drawn illustration. A colour consultation enables you to choose your favourite colours, it may be ones to match your interior décor, and the free-hand illustration is then digitally coloured and printed on heavyweight paper at a specialist printing house in Essex that has state-of-the art presses that enhance the vibrancy of the image. The work is then delivered in a presentation box. Family photos, portraits, weddings, engagements, any memorable event can be captured in one of Love and Colour’s ‘pop-art’ style works. “It’s simply creating a work of art out of something you already love,” says Daniel. f you’re familiar with MB&F, you’ll know that the brand’s creations seldom sit within one product category. While they do indeed tell the time, MB&F watches display the hours, minutes and seconds of the day in such inventive and intricate ways that to categorise them merely as timepieces would be to do a disservice to the company’s founder, Max Büsser. He doesn’t create watches; he conceives machines. Büsser’s latest, the Horological Machine N°8 (HM8, pictured below right), is inspired by a Can-Am race car. It inverts a Girard-Perregaux base movement so that a battle-axe-shaped winding rotor faces upward, positioned between two ‘roll bars’ so that it is visible through anti-reflective sapphirecrystal glass. Dual optical prisms vertically display bi-directional jumping hours and trailing minutes. As you can see, it’s not your typical piece of wrist wear. Then again, there’s rarely anything conventional about Büsser’s works of art, watch-wise or other. Having previously worked with high-end clockmaker L’Epée 1839 to co-create a table clock, and with music box specialist Reuge to launch a mechanical mini-space-ship, Büsser
recently branched even further away from traditional watchmaking. His latest partnership with Caran d’Ache, the coveted pen and crayon maker, is the Astrograph – a fountain pen designed to resemble a space rocket. Available in high-gloss rhodium, sandblasted matt rhodium or anthracite ruthenium, an ‘entry door’ to the rocket, concealed in the ring of the pen, activates the lowering of three stabiliser legs, on which the Astrograph can stand. Comprising 99 components, the pen comes with a miniature magnetic astronaut figurine and a presentation box in the form of a launch pad. What to get the man who already has everything this Christmas? Max Büsser has just provided the answer. Horological Machine N°8, £66,900; Astrograph pen, £19,995 (mbandf.com)
Joyeux Anniversaire All year the watch world has been waiting to discover just how Patek Philippe would honour the 40th anniversary of its most famous timepiece, the iconic Nautilus. The answer arrived in October in the shape of the platinum, time-only 5711/1P (44mm, £82,310), and the enormous (49.25mm) white gold chronograph 5976/1G (left, £69,960). Both watches arrive with blue dials bearing anniversary inscriptions, and feature baguette-cut diamond hour markers. (patek.com)

Have you always been interested in watches? My interest in watches started thanks to my father, when he offered me my first automatic watch for my 20th birthday. Then my interest increased when I had the chance to work for Zenith and Jaeger-LeCoultre in Switzerland.
What gave you the idea of launching a Kickstarter campaign to start the brand? It would have been impossible to get €200,000 from a bank to start my new watch brand, so the Kickstarter campaign sort of imposed itself. We were so surprised to see it raise more than €192,000 in a month!
Reaching For The Moon Your closest Glashütte Original boutique is now just a two-hour Eurostar journey away. October saw the German watchmaker open a new flagship store on Paris’s Rue de la Paix. It now operates 21 boutiques across the world, though, sadly, one still remains to be seen in London. To mark the occasion, the brand bolstered its Senator Excellence line with the launch of the Panorama Date (steel, £7,100; red gold, £14,100) and the Panorama Date Moon Phase (steel, £7,900; red gold £14,900). Both models are equipped with Glashütte’s Calibre 36, which provides a 100-hour power reserve from a single spring barrel. This impressive feat – power reserves of more than 48 hours
typically require more than one spring barrel – was achieved by compacting the case in which the movement’s silicon balance spring sits. The Panorama Date mounts two concentric display discs on the same level, eradicating the need for a bar in its date window; once properly set, the Panorama Date Moon Phase needs correcting just once every 122 years. Glashütte Original was founded in 1994, following the privatisation of Germany’s Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, a collection of watch, clock and instrument companies that had been nationalised in 1951. And as for the ‘25’ presented in all Glashütte date windows? A purely aesthetic pleasure. (glashuette-original.com)
What did you feel you had to add to the watch industry? When I was wearing my vintage old chronograph from the 50s, all my friends were asking me where they could find the same watch, but the price was too expensive. So I looked at the watch market between €150 and €200, but I did not find anything I really liked, so I decided to produce a beautiful product with high watchmaking details for affordable prices.
What’s next for the brand? I received a lot of requests for a ladies’ watch, so I am currently working on a ladies’ collection and a 36mm diameter declination of the chronograph collection. (williaml1985.com)

Fit Like a Glove Karl Lagerfeld has his fingers on the pulse at Chanel, especially with his latest watch model. The black-andwhite J12 XS collection emulates the creative director’s famous monochrome aesthetic, and includes a limited edition range of fingerless lambskin gloves – onto which the watch can be strapped – that references Karl’s own style signature. One of the most impressive pieces is the large watch cuff, which fuses high-tech black ceramic, steel and diamonds. The most notable thing about the J12 XS, however, is its size. The model has been whittled down to 19mm – dainty, but full of attitude. From £3,775 (chanel.com)
Be Boodles Boodles invites us all to be more like the jeweller with its latest collection, launching just in time for Christmas. Available from 1 December, its new ‘icon collection’ for 2017 sees Boodles’ signature letter ‘B’ woven into a delicate lace openwork motif, which has then been set into feminine jewellery pieces, including a bracelet, pendant, earrings and two rings. Each piece is set in 18-karat rose gold and platinum, featuring diamond pavé and round brilliant-cut diamonds. From £6,850 (boodles.com) 72
Connect Four Boucheron has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to mixing metals in fine jewellery, as illustrated by the Quatre collection. The bold yet strikingly simple four-stacked ring design has become a Boucheron signature and, since its launch in 2004, has been reinterpreted around four iconic motifs: the Double Godron, Ligne Diamants, Grosgrain and Clou de Paris. This year, the jeweller has deconstructed Quatre into the Grosgrain and Clou de Paris motifs, which can now be worn alone or together, with the former’s ribbed, vertical lines referencing Frederic Boucheron’s family of drapers, dating back to 1893. (vancleefarpels.com)
Strictly Come Dancing The sizzling Spanish flamenco was the inspiration for Annoushka Ducas’ latest collection. The undulating folds of a fan – a traditional prop used by dancers to send coded messages to their suitors – have been captured in smoothly carved pink mother-of-pearl, as well as referencing the soft, feminine ruffles of their dresses. The fan motif gives Flamenco a distinctly Art Deco feel, as the mother-of-pearl has been cleverly offset with black rhodium and baguette diamonds for true vintage glamour. The limited edition range was recently extended to include pale green jade pieces. (annoushka.com)

...with ALIDA BOER, Founder of Maria’s Bag What inspired you to create maria’s bag? After helping a local community in Guatemala build a school, I received a very beautiful piece of huipil [a traditional garment worn by indigenous women from Central America] as a thank you gift. When I was traveling for Miss World, I wore this same beautiful huipil to represent my country, Guatemala. Everyone loved it, so that inspired me to create the brand. I began helping the artisans by paying them fairly for their beautiful creations and devising a business model that could empower the women from every social class. in your opinion, what is it that makes the brand so unique? Maria’s Bag is more than a luxury handbag company. Our bags are manufactured in Guatemala, each textile is created by an artist over the course of about six months, so each piece is very unique. All of our leather and hardware are imported from Italy. We have over 500 women weaving for us at home while they are spending time with their children, and they are paid fairly for each of these couture pieces. That being said, each bag can’t be reproduced, it also represents different
regions and different stories behind the weavers. Moreover, we’ve helped build a school for the children of some of the artisans so they can have a proper education. A good education not only changes the child’s life, but it influences their parents, friends and the next generation. do you often meet the women who create the bags? I am very involved with the artisans. I go to their communities every now and then, and I know almost everyone by name. They often come to our headquarters in Guatemala, and I’m always in touch with them, especially now that we are creating a new collection. Working together means they have an idea how the collection will come out and be creative with their weaving. I’ve seen these women grow so much, becoming more confident, happier, and I’ve seen a great improvement in their lives. what would you like the brand to achieve in the future? I would love the brand to reflect the culture of Guatemala and preserve the different art techniques of weaving. Of course, I would also want Maria’s Bag to be a global brand, well recognised all over the world. (mariasbag.co.uk)

For designer Annie Haak, jewellery isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about support and meaning. Gemma Knight sits down with this fascinating lady to talk inspiration, creativity and Balinese taxi drivers

hen it comes to hearing a brand’s story, interviews can sometimes get a little monotonous. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with having followed your passion, but there are only so many times you can ask the question and hear variations of ‘I’ve just always really loved hats!’ before you start to despair. But if there is one story which flatly refuses to be tarred with this particularly tedious brush, it’s that of designer Annie Haak and her eponymous jewellery brand. Her story is a colourful, emotional rollercoaster of a tale, and it makes the brand and everything it stands for all the more poignant and profound. Born in Chichester, West Sussex, her story does certainly start like many others – she came from a “very loving and large family” and always enjoyed design and creativity, using art supplies and a treasured box of water colour paints – given to her by her parents – to indulge her artistic streak throughout her childhood. She went to school at a convent in Littlehampton, achieving her best grades in sport and (surprise, surprise) art, before leaving to spend a year in Switzerland with her twin sister, Victoria. “I feel my poor Ma and Pa were just exhausted with us both!” She laughs when we meet – a picture of class, with her short blonde hair swept back on itself and her casual ensemble complemented with one of her many scarves (she is a self-confessed scarf-a-holic). “Although I was so homesick the first term, the year in Switzerland was wonderful – I met so many different nationalities and learnt an awful lot about design and craft.”
“Bali always gets my creative juices running, especially when I go to the street markets and see all the cotton and cord suppliers”

When she returned to the UK, Annie did various administrative jobs until eventually, having met her now-husband Jonathan, settling down as “a very happy farmer’s wife” and having her three children – who, years later, would be the inspiration behind the three hearts above the Annie Haak logo, a symbol she says she will never change. It was in the late ‘90s that her penchant for design returned to the fore when, having created an army of personalised water-colour paintings as Christmas gifts for her large family, Annie decided to see whether people would be interested in buying her work. She set about creating a website, and began selling personalised, detailed paintings for children. “I did my first craft fair and never looked

back,” she tells me. “I could see that people were willing to pay for my artwork and it was such a thrill. I started designing wrapping paper and cards, too, and then added some sterling silver bracelets which I’d designed. They took off immediately – I just couldn’t believe it.” But the story doesn’t end there. Almost ten years later, Annie’s husband found himself in Bali – visiting their daughter, who was unwell – and immediately fell in love with the country and its people. “I then went over to see Bali for myself,” explains Annie. “It was a sad time, as my dear mum and dad had passed away in 2006 within two months of each other, so the following February I went to Bali for a pick me up. It helped so much – I was overwhelmed with the happy faces and the kindness. My husband was working over there by this time, so for a year we had a strange life of me going over and seeing him, then coming back to the UK to look after my small internet business.”
Then, during one of her stints at home in early 2008, Annie’s phone rang. “It was the sort of phone call no one ever wants to get,” she says. “It was a Balinese man who was trying to tell me that my husband was in hospital – within three hours I was on a plane, with my son and daughter (who, luckily, were both in Bali at the time) under instruction to search all the local hospitals looking for their dad. I never again want to travel as I did that day, as I truly didn’t know if I was going to find my husband dead or alive.” Fortunately, her husband made a full recovery, though she arrived to find him in a critical ward, where he stayed for two weeks. Spending hours by his hospital bedside each day, Annie knew she needed to keep busy so, as she’d done all her life, turned to pen and paper. “I felt so alone over there and concerned with how my husband was, and of course I missed having my dear parents with me, so I started to draw a whole collection of charms, including what’s now the brand’s signature charm, ‘My Guardian Angel’. And then the most extraordinary thing happened. Due to getting a local taxi to and from the hospital every day, I got to know the driver, Gusti, and asked if he knew anyone who made up silver. Lo and behold, ten minutes later we were outside his nephew’s house and were being shown into his tiny workroom. I liked his nephew Kadek instantly, and he spoke good English, which helped, so I showed him the ‘My Guardian Angel’ design and he started making it up for me. It took around four weeks until I had the final version, and I just loved it – it gave me so much strength and faith that everything was going to be ok.” In 2010, she officially founded Annie Haak Designs, which has, over the past six years, become one of the UK’s fastest growing jewellery manufactures and retailers, expanding from that

first charm to encompass bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings in sterling silver and gold. Many of Annie’s designs are intended to carry a special meaning, often including mantras or symbols that represent luck, love, protection strength and well-being – the idea being that each piece brings a sense of love or support to the wearer, the way the first design did for Annie. She now divides her time between homes in Guildford and Bali, working closely with the island’s skilled silversmiths to develop her new designs. “My life in Bali is so different from life in the UK, in every way,” she says. “I especially love going out there as I get to see my husband and our two street dogs, whom we love so much. It usually takes me three or four days to get over the jet lag [Bali is eight hours ahead of the UK] and to reacclimatise to the Balinese way of life – and to my husband! I usually spend one day doing nothing and getting over the flight, then I hit the ground running: I see both my silversmiths and any other suppliers, usually giving them a new piece I’ve designed while I’ve been in the UK. “I wake up really early every day, then I hop on my tiny motorbike and head out to get coffee – I just love that ride first thing in the morning. Then I look through all the emails which have come through overnight due to the time difference, and look at each and every order – sad I know, but I need to know what’s selling and love seeing the day’s orders. I always do sourcing first thing in the morning as it’s so much cooler, and I get all sorts of inspiration travelling around by bike or taxi. I don’t know why, but Bali always gets my creative juices running, especially when I go to the street markets and see all the cotton and cord suppliers – there are just endless areas to be in love with over there! It’s too hot to do anything in the afternoon, so I usually just have a swim or rest inside after

lunch, then my day starts again at about 4pm (in the air-con!) once the UK is up and running. Then I’ll stay in the office until eight or nine o’clock, stopping at some point for dinner, and end the day in front of a film with hubby.” In a world of often hard, vacant consumerism, it’s impossible not to be enchanted by the message of meaning and connection behind Annie’s designs. Support and affection are certainly things we could all do with a bit more of, and Annie is definite in her belief that jewellery should provide more than aesthetic value. “It is so important to me that there are meanings and sentiment within my designs,” she says. “Each piece is made and given with love, and this flows through to the lovely lady who receives it. I simply want people to feel very, very special when wearing my jewellery.” (anniehaakdesigns.co.uk)

What Lies Beneath
Cleansing the Soul Heeley Parfums have recently unveiled what we think might be the most perfect winter perfume we’ve ever come across. Eau Sacrée is a unisex scent, by turns mystical and warm, characterised by its rich wealth of olibanum (Somalia), frankincense and myrrh over woody amber tones. Throughout the history of the world, incense has always been considered as possessing sacred qualities, with many religions and civilisations having used it for its evocative power, aiming to free the mind from earthly matters and lift the spirit to a higher state of being. As a renaissance of this universal sacrament, this scent has been created as sacred water for ‘cleansing the soul’ and moving to a higher ground. £125 (50ml), available at Harvey Nichols & Selfridges (harveynichols.com; selfridges.com) 92
Complexions can vary with changing seasons and climates, but your skin’s undertones are a more constant indicator of its colour. Guerlain was guided by 44 women of different ages and skin tones to settle on the shades for its new Lingerie de Peau foundation, which has six degrees of intensity – from porcelain to ebony – and three undertones (cool, neutral and warm). Its ‘micro-mesh’ texture entwines correcting pigments with natural silk and linen fibres for seamless and undeniably radiant coverage. £38.50 (houseoffraser.co.uk)

Fashion photographer Sarah Moon has teamed up with NARS for a limited edition collection launched on 1 November. The looks – inspired by classic cinema and Moon’s trademark ethereal, dreamy images – include bold red lips and smoky greys and purples for eyes. The Give In Take Dual-Intensity Eye and Cheek Palette, exclusive to Space NK, is an ideal all-in-one gift. From £13 (narscosmetics.co.uk)
This month I treated myself to a fragrance consultation at the Christian Dior counter in Selfridges Exchange Square.
An All-Day Glow Once in the consultation area, the experience begins – cocooned from the bustle of the rest of the beauty floor, Champagne in hand and in the very capable hands of Samuel Cooper. La Collection Privée has been created by Dior’s perfumer creator, François Demachy, to celebrate the essence of Dior, with the twelve scents ranging from feminine floral to heady woodiness. I was here to see which was for me. Chatting through my perfume habits and preferences, Samuel took me through the process with warmth and ease. It was then time to start smelling. Am I floral? Unique? Sophisticated? After three recommendations from my expert, as well as a spray of the pure ingredient, at last only one was left – my scent. It’s the perfect way to choose a new scent and, for anyone still looking for an amazing Christmas gift, definitely something any man or woman would love to receive. And, as if the Dior gift wrapping wasn’t already exquisite, there is personalised ribbon and an engraver will be in store from 21-24 December to make it extra special. La Collection Privée £200 (125ml), £290 (220ml), £405 (450ml) Christian Dior, Selfridges Exchange Square (dior.com)
Constructed like a fragrance (with top, mid and base notes), Suqqu’s Extra Rich Cream Foundation is designed to evolve throughout the day for longer-lasting wear. ‘Reflexion Oil’ sits at the surface to give an initial dewy glow, then later breaks down to reveal a milky ‘Glow Liquid’ of pearl pigments that boost shine and keep skin looking velvety by controlling natural oil levels. Finally, natural extracts such as cherry tree leaf and Japanese kelp extract help to hydrate. £65 (selfridges.com)
Hydrating Heroes The latest products to join Liz Earle’s skincare range are the Superskin Dry Oil For Body and Treatment Oil For Body – a hydrating duo made with a powerful combination of plant oils. Cranberry seed is rich in omega three, six and nine, while British borage helps skin retain good levels of moisture. Rosehip oil, with its high levels of essential fatty acids, similarly boosts moisture retention and keeps skin smooth. The Dry Oil comes in spray-on form and dries quickly (so you can dress straight away), but for a more indulgent ritual, take some time out to massage the rich Treatment Oil into your skin. £35 each (uk.lizearle.com) 93

oo often, fashion can become a lacklustre and serious affair, which is why we need dandy designers such as Simon Carter to spruce things up. The AW16 collection is inspired by the idea of town versus country: bumpkins can flaunt their favourite root vegetables, mushrooms, insects and fauna on their shirts, while city boys will peacock in historic hat and quirky robot prints. And for the most extraordinary evenings, only a paisley printed velvet dinner jacket (with matching lining, of course) will do. (simoncarter.net)

Bentley’s first four-wheel drive is designed for well-heeled adventurous types – Jeremy Taylor takes one for a picnic in the Cotswolds…
L
ike the arrival of a British summer, Bentley’s first SUV is something to be celebrated. The styling is as tasteful as a wasp on a sandwich but make no mistake – the new Bentayga has a serious sting in its tail. Ignore the £160,200 starting price, the outrageous list of options and the prestige of the Bentley badge. The Bentayga is a sell-out for the next 12 months, at least; primarily because it’s an SUV that thinks it’s a sports car. While Land Rover and Mercedes have been building top end sports utility vehicles for decades, nothing else on the market can match this 600bhp, 12-cylinder 4x4 for a rapid turn of speed. Despite tipping the scales at 2.5 tons, the twin turbocharged 6.0-litre engine will power occupants to 60mph in just 4.1 seconds. That’s faster than a Porsche 911 and equal to the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante – and you can fit a dog in the boot. Bentley sold 11,000 cars in 2015 but Bentayga will boot that much higher at the 70-year-old Crewe factory. Global demand means the initial production run of 3,500 vehicles has already been revised to 5,500. Forget that sports utility vehicles were originally designed to be unsexy family taxis. Ever since SUVs became the fastest growing sector of the car market, manufacturers have been burning the midnight oil in the rush to launch a rash of new models.
Maserati, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and even Rolls-Royce are in the queue, but Bentley has stolen a march on all of them with the Bentayga. Named after a mountain in the Canary Islands, Bentayga is offered with a list of mouth-watering SUV options for the wellheeled that could easily treble the price. There are bespoke packages for fishermen, dog lovers and shooting enthusiasts – or what about a Breitling Tourbillon dashboard clock? Crafted from solid gold and mother-of-pearl, it adds £110,000 to the bill.
“I love repeating pattern; even in everyday situations I’m drawn to tiles or nature” I’ve joined Bentley for a tour of the Cotswolds to celebrate another ‘must have’ extra. The Linley Hamper Set was designed by the Queen’s nephew, Viscount Linley, and features handcrafted compartments that slot neatly into the Bentayga boot. The set includes bone china, a cooling compartment for champagne, plus a cashmere picnic rug. Even the bottle stoppers are monogramed with the ‘Flying B’ Bentley logo, while the champagne flute bases are shaped like a Bentley five-spoke wheel. Altogether it will set you back £21,000 – around the same price as a

I suspect the Bentley’s ‘in-yerface’ styling won’t appeal much to the conservative folk of the Cotswolds – that oversized, cheese-grater grille is more ostentatious than a rap star’s wardrobe. here’s a reason the brand’s guests are referred to as ‘Aman junkies’. For once you visit an Aman hotel, the best of the world’s other top hideaways can often feel lacking. F
or a thoroughly unusual New Year’s Eve, why not head to London and step back in time? The perfect balance of quaint and kitsch (it’s no surprise that Americans are among the most frequent guests), the year-old Zetter Townhouse in London’s chic Marylebone (just north of Oxford Street) is an ideal base from which to access some of the city’s best restaurants, bars and shops. More importantly, however, it is a treasure trove – a feast for the eyes and senses – decadent and eccentric in equal measure, piqued with a good dose of dry humour. Step from the chilly pavement through the Townhouse’s large, Georgian front door, and feel yourself at once enveloped in the warm, scarlet surrounds of Seymour’s Parlour, the hotel’s cocktail lounge. There is no reception desk, per se; only a small counter opposite the entrance, from which you will be led to the rooms above. These are beautiful but, better still, they’re also fascinating. The design – common to all the rooms, though each is unique in its detail – combines a sumptuous façade of antique and vintage with underlying hints of the ultra-contemporary. Think mahogany fireplaces, brass table lamps, wind-up gramophones and gilded mirrors; old Ordnance survey maps as bathroom wallpaper, rich, heavy drapes and velvet sofas. As evening sets in, it’s time to head back down for an aperitif in the lounge, a dark and intimate enclave that’s irresistibly presented as
104
the residence of the notorious (but fictional) Wicked Uncle Seymour. It’s a delightful place to while away an hour or two over cocktails in strikingly gorgeous glassware, complemented, if you get peckish, by a menu of plush nibbles – courgette crisps, pistachios, pork crackling, gordal olives – and small plates, such as soup, scotch eggs and toasties. Seymour’s Parlour also has larger platters on offer but – since it’s New Year’s Eve, and you are in London after all – I’d suggest strolling to Bond Street station and heading four stops south on the Jubilee Line to Southwark, where acclaimed restaurant (and well-kept-secret) The Laughing Gravy flanks the very edge of the exclusion zone for the famous firework display at The London Eye. Book early, then head for a delightful pre-firework feast, with the New Year menu (four courses for £65) offering such modern seasonal delights as duck croquettes, caramelised celeriac and white truffle puree with damson chutney, roast cod with langoustine Scotch broth and fig and damson Bakewell tart with mulled wine ice cream, all created by head chef Michael Facey. Then it’s time to wrap up warm, stroll outside and watch the fireworks (7.30pm-12.15am, £10 per ticket), then jump back on the all-night tube to be sped back to your warm, soft Townhouse bed – dreaming of the Parlour’s sumptuous potted eggs, avocado and salmon spreads come morning. appy New Year! My paws are doing the foxtrot over the fields of Frodsham, the crunching of the leaves replaced by the squelching of the mud. No makeover books for me this New Year, I just need to tone down my wining and dining and embrace the weather in Cheshire. Parking in the small car park above Frodsham, we made our way along winding lanes, through muddy fields where Aston and I jumped, ran and slid through the mud up to Frodsham Hill Wood, which stretches for 26 acres through to the war memorial on the summit of Frodsham Hill. Built with sandstone in 1921, this is a fitting tribute to honour those from Frodsham who gave their lives in two world wars. Magnificent views of the Mersey Estuary and the Cheshire Plain are laid out before us and, as it was such a clear day, we were able to see the mountains of North Wales. A very pawtastic walk to explore. A long sleep was definitely earned after our walk, but my little brother Aston still had so much energy. The scribbles on the wall meant he had found the crayons, so I guided him to the table, where he sat down to colour as I warmed his feet and took my cat nap. A purrfect time for us to relax together; there is nothing like having your best buddy beside you, even if you are dozing a little. Colouring helps to unlock your imagination, giving you the freedom to learn and create your own masterpiece. Aston is too young to realise how much he is improving his motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination, while learning how to make choices and encourage his creativity. To him this is just a fun thing to do but, for the older child, it is a perfect way to relax after the rigours of the school day. The choices each child will have to make, such as which colour to choose and where to put it, become more complicated as the child gets older which, in turn, helps them to develop problemsolving skills and decision making. After my nap, I too put paw to paper, designing you your very own Mr Hendrix colouring picture. All you have to do is go to the link below and download it for free – so get colouring! Until next time, enjoy creating your masterpiece. Love & Licks

Barking
for Charity The Cheshire Magazine is proud to be working with Variety, the children's charity, throughout 2017, so what better way to start than by speaking to Nick Shattock, 2017 chief barker and Natasha Land, young ambassador?
W
e have worked with the Variety team here in the north west for a while now and are always amazed when we hear stories of their work and the difference it makes to children and young people. We believe that in today's world this generosity, selflessness and extraordinary work should be celebrated. This year we will be working ever more closely with Nick, Lyn, Judi and the team to share these stories, raise some awareness (and cash – we'll keep you posted on our plans!) and set up a new Variety Cheshire committee to support the charity into the future. What appeals to us, beyond the remarkable people, is that Variety is not a single-illness or cause charity. They believe that all children should have an equal opportunity to reach their potential, regardless of their circumstances, helping any child whether suffering from chronic illness, sickness,
disability or economic disadvantage. The charity was founded in 1927 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia USA after a baby was left at the door of a variety house on Christmas Eve. A note pinned to the baby girl's dress read: "Please take care of my baby. Her name is Catherine. I can no longer take care of her. I have always heard of the generosity of people in show business and I pray to God that you will look after her. Signed, A Heartbroken Mother." "She was right, and after christening her Catherine Variety, the charity was formed," continues Nick Shattock, chief barker. "The first meeting was in a show tent and carnival or circus terminology has been used ever since. Hence I am the chief barker rather than chairman" [the chief barker was the man with the advertising hoards drumming up business outside theatres]. "The UK Tent was founded in 1947 with a dinner at The Savoy attended by film moguls, agents and celebrities all eager to freely donate

their time and talent to help raise funds for children. Indeed, The Duke of Edinburgh was a founding inspiration and is a life president. Since then more than £270million has been raised by Variety in the UK.
“What attracted me to Variety was the opportunity to really make a direct and immediate impact to disadvantaged children’s lives” "What attracted me to Variety was the opportunity to really make a direct and immediate impact to disadvantaged children’s lives, while lightening the burden on their carers. I first got involved when I received an invitation to the Annual Dinner. The appeal video put into context how lucky most of us are and what a life-changing difference Variety can make. The table immediately and instinctively clubbed together to buy a Sunshine Coach, the emotional pull of the appeal video was so strong." Nick got more involved in Variety through his property links and became co-chair of the Variety ‘Props’ Awards Lunch, which raised over £400,000 in 2016 alone. Nick joined the Variety barkers, or Crew, eight years ago and six years ago became a Trustee. In 2017, Nick takes up the mantle of chief barker. In 2015 Variety donated 69 wheelchairs, 59

Sunshine Coaches and made 114 financial grants for specialist equipment. It also delivered 31,927 Variety Great Days Out for children across the charity. It is the specialist equipment that marks the charity out, filling a gap that the NHS cannot fill and making life-changing differences to children and their parents/carers. Natasha Land was a recipient of such a grant and is thrilled to become a young ambassador for the charity. Natasha's mum, Grace, explains: "Tasha has a rare form of dwarfism [Kneist Syndrome] and her powered wheel chair is such a saviour for her. It allows her to be independent, raises her self-esteem and allows her to be 14 and do what 14-year-olds should do. "When her old wheelchair, she'd had since she was seven, started breaking down I couldn't afford a new one and was heartbroken. I applied to over 14 grants. I didn't think I'd get one. But Variety came back and said yes. "Tasha's school Ashton-on-Mersey School also raised some money raffling a football shirt. And together we raised the money to buy a new SnapDragon chair with raise-up frame. And it's pink so she loves it even more! We are so grateful to Variety; without their help Tasha wouldn't be able to be Tasha." The Secret to
Healthy Teeth Kevin Dobbs, clinical director of The Dental Academy in Daresbury, shares his top tips on caring for your teeth and keeping them in great condition
H
aving opened his first practice in 1986, and recognised as a leading expert in dental implantology, Manchester-trained Kevin Dobbs is more than qualified to advise on how to keep teeth in the best of health. It can often be difficult to prioritise your dental health amid hectic, busy lives, but taking proper care of your teeth is well worth the effort – not only improving their health today, but potentially saving yourself a world of trouble in the future.
The three keys to healthy teeth
If you only do three things to improve and sustain the health of your teeth, let it be these: first of all, try to keep to as healthy a diet as possible; in particular aiming to avoid sweet and acidic drinks. Second, always clean your teeth twice a day – in the morning and evening – using a fluoride-based toothpaste, as this will have the greatest effect. And finally, make sure you visit your dentist regularly for check-ups so that he or she can spot any problems or issues early on.
person to person, but the old six-monthly interval works well for most people and it’s easy to remember! For hygienist visits, most patients should go at least twice a year, although if a patient has been diagnosed with gum disease, it’s likely that they’ll be advised to keep to a visit every three months.

It sounds simple, but all too often people ignore – and then get used to – clear signs of dental problems which, left unrecognised and untreated, can quickly worsen. Classic symptoms of problems include bleeding when brushing, sensitivity, and any unusual lumps or bumps that you notice in your mouth, so if you’re experiencing any, be sure to have them checked out as soon as possible.
The recommended interval between check-up appointments and hygienist visits varies from

he latest Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors’ (RICS) UK residential market review reports that buyer demand increased modestly for the second consecutive month, agreed sales increased and are expected to rise further in the near future and, in the lettings market, tenant demand picked up, with a significant proportion of agents reporting a rise. For residential lettings, demand continues to outpace supply and this is true across the UK, excluding only London. Expectation for rental growth in the rest of the country picked up with a considerable percentage of RICS respondents forecasting a rise in the coming months. Our Director of Residential Lettings, William Jordan, believes that the reduced demand in London is in part due to Brexit and businesses continuing to assess its impact. He goes on: “As for the North West, the promise of the northern powerhouse, HS2, the continued expansion of Media City and the ever-increasing rise in the premiership football clubs is ensuring bricks and mortar investment is as ‘safe as houses’”. However, the popularity of residential property investment has led to a rise in letting and managing agents in an industry that still remains largely unregulated. Despite this, agents in the UK hold in excess of £2.7bn of landlord and tenant money, as anyone can start a lettings business without qualifications – and hold a client’s money. Investors who may be interested in residential property need to do their research, not only into the best place to buy to achieve a good yield and capital growth, but also into who is going to look after their investment. Cheap may well improve the gross monthly yield, but planned preventative maintenance, advised, managed and instigated by a good letting and managing agent will protect that investment. So, look for an ARLA or RICS agent, as these selfgoverning bodies have codes of conduct for their members and also insist on client money protection. Unregulated agents have a higher propensity for failure, so choosing a regulated agent will ensure that your money is protected.

Walking on Water At the Monaco Yacht Show, David Taylor tours a multi award-winning superyacht to see the next step for luxury life on the ocean

nteriors are hard to get right at the best of times. Every piece of furniture, every fitting, has to work perfectly with the room, its surroundings and the people who live there. That’s without mentioning other factors such as outside light and changing seasons. Imagine, then, having to work through all of these considerations, but with the added problem of your house floating on the sea. This is the challenge that faces the interior designers of super yachts. At the Monaco Yacht Show, any designer worth their salt plies their potential customers with champagne and promises – yours will be the biggest, the fastest, there’ll be a helipad. It’s only when the yacht has been bought that owners begin to think about what to put in it. “There is a behaviour that is very unique to the boat world, and particularly to the superyacht world, where we will have a conversation with a customer, and they will really focus heavily on the base price of the yacht itself,” says Kiran Haslam, marketing director of Princess Yachts. “It might mean six or seven consultations, over a period of seven months to a year to reach an agreement. Then, all of a sudden they start selecting different specifications

for the interiors without questioning the price. They might very quickly accumulate four or five million pounds of options. The cost for the décor is never a discussion point – it’s what they want.” This is writ large when on the final night of the Yacht Show I step onto the Galactica Super Nova (GSN), built by Heesen Yachts and designed by Espen Øino’s Andrea Bonini. The 70-metre beauty won Finest New Superyacht at the show, and it’s easy to see why. The exterior is sleek, bold without being garish, and has unbelievably clean structural lines. This theme continues once I step aboard. It’s difficult to describe just how immaculately put together the living spaces are: the decks wouldn’t look out of place in a Mayfair mansion. Bonini takes me round the boat as we set off for Nice, amid a cacophony of horns signalling the end of the show. This is no ordinary superyacht (if there is such a thing): there’s a six-metre swim-jet infinity pool with a waterfall, glass-panelled bottom and spa jets; 92 square metres of entertaining space; a foredeck that can be transformed into a touch-and-go helipad or outdoor cinema; a sumptuous indoor living and dining area; a master bedroom as big as my flat; and a fully-fledged lift to access all three floors. All of this, and decorated to the highest standard. As Bonini walks past a small table, for instance, he explains that they developed technology enabling them to bend teak, so the table’s surface design remains consistent. The level of detail and dedication shown by
“Who wants their yacht to look like someone else’s? It’s got to be unique.” the designers, and by association, the owners, is second to none. This personal, unique touch is ever-more important when the money involved reaches new heights. Andrew Winch, of Winch Design, believes that yacht designers are at the height of their powers: “I was in Paris visiting about six different artisan studios, and I had the best day ever. There are some fantastic craftspeople. “We’ve made furniture for yachts that is totally unique. It might be a above: PHOENIX2, winch design ©Klaus Jordan right: kaelo far right: 56m Panthalassa, Y.CO

coffee table that’s not just a coffee table, but a complete planetarium. We do bespoke everything, down to the carpets, the sofas, the table linens, and the china. “Who wants their yacht to look like someone else’s? It’s got to be unique.” Haslam agrees: “Everyone is pushing more for a service-oriented interaction with the manufacturer. On a 40-metre boat, you may interact with the Princess design studio and you say, ‘My daughter’s favourite teddy bear is pink - I want that to match the carpet.’” “We’re getting customers that really know what they want, and it’s a lot to do with the digital age and how they interact with the world around them. They see a lot of things on Pinterest, lots of inspirational pictures, and say this is the look and feel that I want. You’re starting to get that high-end expectation; we’re seeing more demanding requests.” Although owners are submitting more elaborate requests, the purpose of these spaces seems to be changing,
with a generation of young millionaires bringing a new focus to the water. The ease of moving from dining table to jet ski is becoming ever-more important. Charlie Birkett, co-founder and CEO of yacht charter company Y.CO, sees this as a good challenge: “It shows we’re moving with the times. It challenges young and even established yacht designers to move away from the conventional approach. “A new tier of clients is looking at yachting in a completely different way. They are young, very active: they like water sports; they want to be on the water. They design their boats in a way where there’s more focus on having one-deck living space. “The general design of a superyacht nowadays has to accommodate the new age of thinking, which is having fun on the water rather than just sitting there in a penthouse: you’re more in a beach house.” A sumptuously decorated beach house that can go to any beach in the world. There are worse places to be.

Luxury
It’s All in the Detail
T
he definition of luxury is uniquely personal. A truly luxurious kitchen is not one that’s filled with the most expensive units, worktops and appliances but one that has everything you’ve ever wanted in it. At heart, luxury is all in the detail. A marble pastry slab for the home baker. A set of tall open shelves to file your cookery books and show off your favourite bowls. A walk-in or pull-out larder for your stores. One of a kind granite worktops. An island to cook at while your friends and family talk you through their day. Appliances that look like NASA built them. Or simply a special bed for the dog. Providing all of the elements you need to create your personal slice of luxury is the thinking behind Wren Kitchens’ new Infinity Collection. It comprises thousands of unit options, feature units, frontals, colours, details and accessories, all beautifully designed and manufactured to order so you can express your unique style and add value to your home. So where to start? According to Wren Kitchens’ senior vice president of design and development, Rob Lawrence, begin by spending some time considering who uses your kitchen and how. Then think style.
134
Homes and Interiors
“When you picture a luxury kitchen,” he says “is it something grand and traditional like our Country range, with elegant overmantles and cooks’ tables? Or a super contemporary handleless style with sleek banks of appliances, smooth units and coloured profiles like our Milano range? For something completely different, we’ve created a totally new range called Elements with dramatic modern finishes from Italian Concrete to Ocean Cypress.” “Choosing your Infinity style is just the start – next you have to choose all of the finishing touches that make your luxury kitchen unique. Have some fun and get creative with the details – combine ranges, contrast profiles, mix up handles, add feature units and play with our colours.” Plan ahead! Measure up your room and think about how to make the most of your space. With the vast number of unit sizes, Wren’s Infinity Collection helps you to make the most of every square metre in your kitchen. Check out Wren’s feature units – from pet beds to open shelves, curved ends to midway units – and select ones that enhance your lifestyle. With fifty kitchen colours to choose from, why stick to one? Worktops are the ultimate luxury finishing touch. Pay attention to materials and thicknesses, curves and edges – and mix them up. Luxury
laminate comes in dozens of colours and effects, and there’s timber, quartz and best of all – exotic natural granite. An island is a luxury kitchen must-have, providing a natural focal point. Nothing makes a statement quite like the Infinity Stealth or Mirage islands with their dramatic shapes. But every Infinity island will add an unmistakable touch of luxury to your kitchen because it will have been designed to suit you – and you alone. Now that’s luxury. Creating a Kitchen Garden It’s the definition of epicurean idyll, and is much easier than you might think – particularly with our handy beginner’s guide. Grab a trowel, and get planting
W
hether you’ve been inspired by the latest celebrity chef to take fork to soil, or have always had a wistful image of yourself as an extra on The Good Life, creating your very own vegetable garden is as good for the soul as for the wallet and planet. There is no joy quite like the joy of serving up the slightly gnarled carrots and off-kilter cauliflowers that you have tended from seedlings – and, even if you aren’t a keen gardener, a few key snippets of advice are all you need to set up your own thriving patch.
138
Homes and Interiors
Choose A Spot The one cardinal rule here is – as even the greenest of beginner gardeners will know – plants need sunlight. Therefore, you’ll want to choose the sunniest spot in your garden as the site of your vegetable patch, as it’ll mean the plants growing in it are sturdier and more disease-resistant. Sunlight will also make much of your produce sweeter – for example, carrots, tomatoes and chillies – though you’ll want to put up some netting to shield plants like salads and strawberries, as they prefer shade. Soil is also important, although most plants will thrive as long as your soil isn’t very shallow (less than the length of your spade’s blade) or filled with stones (these will make carrots kink), in which case you should build raised beds or use pots.
The Allotment Option If you haven’t space for a vegetable plot in your garden, then an allotment can be an appealing option – but beware, as it can also prove a huge disadvantage. Before you commit to a plot, make sure you’ve vetted it for all your various needs, as it’s always better to wait than struggle with somewhere that doesn’t work for you. First of all, be sure you have the necessary spare time to devote to an allotment, and that you can access it easily – somewhere within a very short drive of home is best, as prizing yourself out of the house at all in the winter months can be a chore, so the shorter your journey, the better. Next it’s a good idea to get a sense of the community and facilities at your chosen allotment before you put down roots, so to speak. For example, if you’re likely to be bringing little ones with you, check that it’s family friendly (some even have playgrounds attached), and ensure that your plot is near to a water supply (otherwise you’ll need a shed, gutter and water butts), out of the shade of any trees, and reasonably near to the perimeter, to make heavy drop-offs more convenient.

gardens Unwanted Visitors Whatever your personal feelings about slugs and snails (yes, we’re sure they have lovely personalities, too), your kitchen garden is the last place they should be welcome. To avoid slimy pests, make sure you clear away weeds and leaves from your plot as soon as they accumulate, as this will limit mollusc hiding places, and avoid having directly adjacent long grass or flower borders, too. Instead, separate the beds in your plot with borders of paving, gravel or compacted soil, as this makes unwanted guests easier to spot (by you, and helpful passing birds). And then, of course, there are the dreaded weeds. The key here is to make sure you start with a plot that is completely weed-free, otherwise you’ll be fighting a losing battle forever afterwards. Pull them out by hand or use a chemical spray (the best contain systemic glyphosate, which kills right down to the roots then completely biodegrades), and beat tougher adversaries (such as those with deep or wiry roots) by burying a layer of card or newspaper beneath a 5cm-deep layer of compost.
Starter Projects First, create your own homemade soil-improver by piling leaves into chicken-wire pens or compost bags and letting them decompose for approximately one year. The result is leafmould, a fantastic substance which retains moisture, making it ideal for covering newly-sewn seeds to keep them hydrated. Next, start building your raised beds by screwing on-edge scaffold planks to short posts fixed in the soil. This helps to keep your beds tidy and organised, as well as lessening the amount of bending you’ll need to do, protecting them from pets and children, improving drainage and raising plants towards the light. Lastly, fill your raised beds with a mixture of 40 per cent topsoil (to provide anchorage and nutrients) and 60 per cent compost. Then you’re ready to plant!
140
Some Helpful Advice • Take heed of what your seed packets tell you, particularly when it comes to the time of year their contents should be planted. • Make your own compost (using lawn clippings, green prunings and kitchen peelings) to feed your plants. • You aren’t a farm, so don’t bother rotating your crops every year (if you must, do it every two).

A First Time for Everything Owning your very own Cheshire village home is more affordable than you could have possibly imagined. Carolyn Walsh, sales director at Lancet Homes, explains why
N
ew Year, New Home – a wonderful prospect for 2017, but buying your first home is often an incredibly exciting and emotional time. It’s a time in which we make possibly the most expensive purchase of our lives, so when it comes to putting your first foot on the ladder, Lancet Homes makes the process as stress-free and affordable as possible.
Access to affordability Amid the daydreaming about interiors, colour schemes and furniture, there’s the financial side of purchasing a home to contend with. At Lancet, we offer the Help To Buy scheme (on our Kempton* two-bedroom starter home, for example). This is a fantastic government-backed scheme which opens the door to home ownership, by allowing anyone who doesn’t already own their own property – or has sold their existing home – to apply . If they’re successful, they’ll be granted an equity loan from the government. They then contribute at least 5 per cent of the property price as a deposit; the government will then provide them with a loan
142
for up to 20 per cent, while the remaining 75 per cent must be mortgaged. It can bring your monthly payments down significantly, meaning that owning your own home may be more attainable than you think.
A Cheshire starter home Most first-time buyers rule out perceived expensive areas, but they’re often home to wonderful communities, and Cheshire – with its leafy green villages, its gastronomical highlights and access to major northern cities – is a wonderful place to start. Lancet Homes’ Mere’s Edge development in Helsby, for example, gives buyers a first home with a Cheshire postcode and, with two-bedroom Kempton and Sandown homes starting at just £128,000 using Help to Buy, is a viable option for all. There is also a range of other house types and plots at the Mere’s Edge development, including a bungalow, semidetached, mid-mews and detached properties boasting two-four bedrooms, each designed to the highest specification, creating a
beautiful balance of a starter home which you can move straight into, with the option of also working with the developer to add your own taste before completion.
A quintessential English village The locality of Helsby village exudes quintessential English rural charm, making it an ideal place to invest in property. Located in rural Cheshire, it’s nestled on the edges of the desirable market town of Frodsham, with a population of under 5,000 and an array of shops, restaurants and cafes, plus a well-connected train station, two primary schools and Helsby High School – which boasts some of the highest A-Level results in Cheshire. Just four of these homes will be available for sale, so register now by emailing info@ lancet-homes.co.uk or phone 0161 969 4919 for more information. *Two properties are available on the Government's Help to Buy scheme for £128,000 where customers must meet the eligibility criteria. The remaining two properties will be available for £160,000.

y The Bridle is an extremely impressive, beautifully presented five-bedroom country house nestled in approximately one acre of stunning grounds. Built by the current owners in 2006, the house is constructed of Leicestershire hand-made bricks with Derbyshire stone mullion windows, all surmounted by a Welsh slate roof. This impressive period style facade is only amplified by the splendour of the interior, with a large amount of ambassadorial-sized light rooms with features such as American walnut flooring, bespoke carved-oak staircase, solid oak doors, coved ceilings, open fireplaces with carved stone surrounds, air-conditioned
gymnasium, stone-tiled bespoke bathrooms with Aquavision TV to the master bathroom and a granite topped Poggenpohl kitchen. The specification really is second to none with a no-expense-spared mantra being evident throughout. However, it is the setting that really sets this house apart, being located on a very prestigious road with wonderful far reaching countryside views from the rear and being at
the end of the line of houses, backing onto countryside to one side and to the rear. A solid set of oak electric gates with brick walling to either side opens out into a stone set driveway that dissects the manicured lawns, leading to a large parking and turning area to the front of the house and garaging. The majority of the gardens lie to the rear, with an expansive terrace accessed off the drawing room, sitting room and kitchen breakfast room. Stone steps lead down to the level lawns which are bounded by mature specimen trees and hedging. Wonderful views of the countryside can be enjoyed from the rear of the house.
