With summer upon us, our July/August edition focuses on outdoor activities and fun for everyone. We spotlight local events (p.6), talk to jazz singer Emma Smith about her upcoming performance at Fulham Palace (p.7), and take a look at some of the best places for al fresco eating and drinking (p.16). Sport is also on the menu: William Monroe interviews a local tennis coach (p.8) and finds out about Fulham’s first cricket club in more than 100 years (p.9).

O
ctober sees the arrival of autumn, of new seasons and new fashions, and style is our focus this month – from period drama Victoria returning to our screens (p.40) and the seventies revival in jewellery (p.48), to the ceremonial elegance of the new Rolls-Royce Dawn(p.72) and the fluid lines of handmade furniture (p.136). Style is all around us. In all aspects of our lives. We each have our own unique version, and that is what makes the world a wonderful place. Of course, as autumn envelopes us, the breed of style most on our minds is that of the latest fashion must-haves, so naturally we have some pages to inspire you: from the stories of icons captured in coffee table tomes on page 36, to the top catwalk looks on page 53 (we are huge fans of the velvet dinner jacket, gentlemen take note) and the latest Lacroix (darling!) foray into interiors on page 140. This month we also have a couple of exclusive interviews for you. The first being cheeky chef Gino D’Acampo, as he launches another restaurant, charming his guests along the way (p.32). This sits alongside one of our most famous exports, Take That, who talk to Natalie Anglesey about their new show, fatherhood and planning a world premiere in Manchester – where else? – on page 28. Never forget, be stylish, be you...

My life in
CHESHIRE ROWETTA, SINGER and SONGWRITER
How would you describe yourself? I am a mother first, even though my children are now in their 30s, and that is my proudest achievement. Then I am a singer/songwriter. I’d like to think I’m a good person, too. Where is home? And work? Manchester, and it always will be. Whatever happens, I would like to always have a base here, and I miss it when I am on tour. How did you become involved with the Northwest Football Awards? I am passionate about football. I love United, and I was on BBC Red Wednesday once. It’s so amazing to be associated with Laura (even though she’s City!) and the awards, as they celebrate what football can do. This wasn’t always the case: I grew up in the ’70s when Liverpool was the team to support, and it wasn’t until Eric Cantona came to United that my son and I started going regularly and I became a little bit obsessed – with the team, Giggs, Sir Alex. It got to the stage that I’d have the commentary on in my ear-piece! My son ended up as a Crewe supporter, but I am United all the way. I love the game, love seeing players play well together, and I love that all around the world, people know of United. I’m so proud, and I’m so happy we have Mourinho now. He is the one. What did you want to be when you were younger? I wanted to be a lawyer in crown court. I used to play football with the boys, too, and I was a bit like Gary Lineker – I’d stand near the net and kick it in. I don’t know where the musical side came from. It wasn’t anything that was really nurtured when I was younger, but then I started winning talent competitions and my school built musicals around me then. That sound of the crowd when I sang my first gig was like scoring a goal.
“Don’t give up on what makes you happy. Live and love.” Name a few of your favourite places. One of my favourite places in the world is Lake Garda, and I try to go a few times a year to shut off and recharge. I have also just discovered Valencia, which is so beautiful and has a beach, which I’d discounted it for in favour of Barcelona for so long. I love Barcelona, too; I have spent a lot of birthdays there and I am friends with the owners of Manchester Bar there. What/who inspires you? Tony Wilson. When I was younger and starting out with the Happy Mondays, he really gave me confidence and said the right things to me when I needed to hear them. I still have his photo in my room and he still inspires me.
top to bottom: ROwETTA; LAKE GARDA; Sir Alex Ferguson Statue In Old Trafford © JEAFISH PING/ SHUTTERSTOCK; tony wilson © eVERETT COLLECTION/ SHUTTERSTOCK; old trafford © MRMICHAELANGELO/ SHUTTERSTOCK.
Tell us a secret or a fun fact about yourself? I’m a pretty open book, but people sometimes don’t know that I am Jewish, or are surprised that my dad was a high profile Nigerian politician who was shot in 1992. Sometimes people don’t believe that I have two children in their 30s and brought them up myself. What’s been your biggest life lesson? Live in hope. Don’t give up on what makes you happy. Live and love. Northwest Football Awards, The Point, Emirates Old Trafford, 13 November 2017 (@Rowetta; northwestfootballawards.com) 19

NOTEBOOK Our guide to what’s on across Cheshire, the north west and beyond WORDS: JAN CLARKE
Going The Extra Mile Inspirational employees from the aptly named Pixel Inspiration took part in the London to Paris Cycle Challenge. The five employees joined a group who travelled a staggering 320 miles in support of Manchester charity, Prevent Breast Cancer, but two of the employees, Barry Bugg and Natalie Wood, went the extra mile. In fact, they went an impressive 240 extra miles by setting off from Manchester, three days earlier. Pixel Inspiration have a long-standing partnership with Prevent Breast Cancer and the company recently created a poignant video to demonstrate the charity’s key message, ‘prediction, prevention and protection’. The group raised an impressive £23,000 for the Wythenshawebased charity, which is the UK’s only charity entirely dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer. Barry and Natalie’s extra miles contributed an incredible £14,000 towards the total. (preventbreastcancer.org.uk/donate)
winning streak Chester-based firm Hartey Wealth Management has been awarded the title of ‘Best Financial Planning Firm, England’ at the 2017 Wealth & Money Management Awards, and ‘Best Family-Owned Wealth Management Firm’ at the 2017 UK Enterprise Awards. What’s more, managing director Tristan Hartey has also been announced as winner of the ‘Young Entrepreneur Award 2017’ at the UK Enterprise Awards. This trio of awards evaluate the firm’s performance, commitment and innovation over the past 12 months and are only given to the most dedicated firms and individuals. (harteywm.co.uk)
Air Mission Simon Williams, partner and head of corporate and commercial at Jolliffe & Co. Solicitors, has been appointed to the board of trustees for the North West Air Ambulance Charity. His role is to oversee the strategy and growth of the service. Established in 1999, this is a vital service which needs £8 million a year to survive and relies almost entirely on the donations from the general public. The North West Air Ambulance Charity covers 5,500 square miles across Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria and carries out over 2,000 missions a year. (nwaa.net)
fine folk Northern singersongwriter Kate Rusby is celebrating an incredible 25 years on the road. In a career that has seen her recognised as one of the finest interpreters of traditional folk song, Kate enjoys unprecedented appeal as one of our most emotive original folk songwriters. Already a Mercury Prize winner and recipient of Best Live Act, Best Album and Best Original Song at the BBC 2 Folk Awards, Kate’s latest album Life in a Paper Boat, is attracting great praise. Design Hotels Three of the best design led hotels from across the world, where innovative design and style meet luxury service, creating a unique and exciting place to stay
Designed by former Bond girl Anouska Hempel, who is now known for her glamorous interior designs, this hotel is full of decadence and exoticism. Located in Kensington, the black Victorian exterior is understated and hints at secrecy. It hides a five-star ‘couture’ hotel oozing with theatrical excess and warm hospitality. The design style is a fusion of eastern and western styles, and Anouska’s skill lies in her ability to create mood and magic with her interior designs. Opened in 1978, this hotel offers inspirational design, sophistication and impeccable service. The restaurant and bar is a well-known hang-out for movie stars, actors and designers, and the uniquely appointed rooms offer effortless style for those seeking elegant travel. top tip
The eclectic mix of the Kings Road offers shopping and inspiration. Be sure to check out Vivienne Westwood’s original store and The Chelsea Antiques Market. (blakeshotels.com)
Straf Hotel, Milan Vincenzo De Cotiis has created a hotel which also works as a grand-scale art installation. His interior design vision means this hotel is worlds apart from standard hotel design, and the finished look is not at all what you would expect of a 19th-century palazzo, with unusual materials and oxidised brass, scratched mirrors and split slate to give hints of industrial design. Close to Milan’s Duomo, it offers a personal, attentive yet informal service. The restaurant and meeting rooms often host fashion shows and art exhibitions, while the 64 guest rooms reflect two distinct philosophies of hi-tech minimalism and a warm intimate ambiance. top tip
This hotel is in the perfect spot for those visiting Milan’s famous La Scala opera house. (straf.it)
The Armani Hotel, Dubai
Armani is one of the most recognised names when it comes to designer style. The global fashion icon chose Dubai, one of the world’s most exciting cities, to create a hotel which embodies every element of the Armani design philosophy. The brand’s passion for world class service and elegance comes together inside this stunning building. Located in the heart of downtown Dubai, with its vibrant retail and entertainment offering, all 160 guestrooms and suites have unrivalled views over the sparkling waters of the Arabian Gulf. A team of Armani ambassadors delivers exacting personal service and each guest has a lifestyle manager on hand around the clock to ensure guests get the most out of their stay. top tip

One For the Calm: If, like me, your idea of calm is music, let me introduce you to Jonsi – the lead singer of Sigur Rós. The soundtrack to We bought a Zoo is, in my opinion his most calming and, at times, heart-warming. So after the kids have jumped out, and then rushed back for the forgotten PE kit, put said album on and enjoy the drive home, to work or to the nearest coffee shop. PS: The film is built for Sundays with the kids.

Developing in the Right Direction Melissa Porter identifies some of the latest behavioural trends sweeping our picturesque planet. We are now...
1. Listening to understand. Record numbers of people are taking the opportunity to shut up and listen so that they are better able to understand the needs of others. Why? They genuinely are seeking to connect to each other though the progressive movement of improved communications. Active listening is an epidemic spreading through governments and political establishments, filtering through to households around the world and reducing the number of divorces and legal disputes slide to an all-time low. 2. Understanding that everyone is dealing with some battle we don’t know about and choosing not to take the actions, words and behaviour of others personally. People have been spotted all around the country displaying compassion towards what history has chronicled as ‘angry’ types. This compassion-filled movement is inspiring ‘angry’ types to seek therapeutic help for further behavioural intervention techniques. The effect is affecting the GDP (now measured by happiness levels) in 72 per cent of countries worldwide.
3. Choosing to take responsibility for our actions and feelings vs blaming, shaming and judging others. The effect is to observe a surge in increasingly fulfilled humans who are making better relationship choices, better food and work choices and are generally more passionate and optimistic about life’s possibilities.
4. Beginning to understand that a thought is a set of stories and beliefs and is something that can be changed as desired. There’s a surge in faith and love-fuelled thoughts that are encouraging more passion-fuelled choices and having a positive effect on our environment. Archaic survival-based thoughts are soon to gain a place in the British Museum next to the long-extinct Dodo.
5. Teaching kids how to think vs what to think. This is encouraging a trend of passionate and creative humans who are able to think outside the box and advance evolution, technology and human life.
6. Perceiving adversity and problems as gifts that are designed to enhance our emotional wellbeing, through the consideration of alternative perspectives, and the acceptance that what is here, now, is perfect for our journey.
7. Recognising gratitude and appreciation as being the most effective techniques to achieve fulfilment in one’s self and life. Regardless of the judgement and assumptions we attach to a situation, millions of humans are engaging in the practice of gratitude to achieve peace in any given moment.
8. Considering kindness a powerful way of being and no longer regarding it as a weakness. Melissa is a professional, certified transformational life coach (melissaportercoach.com)

forget As the new musical The Band rehearses in Manchester, prior to its world premiere, Natalie Anglesey talks exclusively to Take That
“W
e’ve been talking about the idea for a musical for about eight years now and just waited for the right time to come along,” Gary Barlow explains. We’re sitting in The Lowry Hotel with fellow Take That members, Howard Donald and Mark Owen, discussing their eagerly awaited new musical, The Band. Written by playwright Tim Firth, it features the music of the multi-award-winning group. The Band will enjoy its world premiere in Manchester where Take That was first formed. Although there are four members of the original line-up down as co-producers, Robbie Williams was absent as he’s currently on a European Tour. “Rob will be joining for us for some of The Band’s first nights but we’ve been keeping him updated with rehearsal footage wherever he’s on tour. Unfortunately we’re all so busy it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get us all in the same room at the same time,” Gary smiles. Looking fit and healthy, the friends are obviously enjoying this new venture. With a chuckle Mark reminds me: “We’ve been preparing this catalogue of music for many
years – so hopefully we’ve got the right songs in the right places. But I don’t want to give away too many spoiler alerts!” Howard adds: “We’ve co-produced our own songs and shows before, but this is our first musical. So we’ve chosen songs from 1992 through to the 111 album." He reassures me that my favourite, Never Forget, is included because, as he says: “ it’s just a fantastic song.” If you were fortunate to see the musical, The Girls, you’ll be aware it was based on the story of The Calendar Girls written by Tim Firth, with music by Gary, who are both from Frodsham. “Tim is first and foremost a lovely man and a good friend. He’s not only a brilliant playwright, he has an eye for writing and directing comedy. He’s been coming to our concerts since 1991 and because so much of our life and heart and love is involved in this musical, I knew I could trust him writing the story.”
“Even after that ten-year break, [our fans] were the ones we listened to when they wanted us back” Mark chips in. “But we wanted it to be more than just a story about the band because most of our loyal followers know that story – we also wanted it to be about the fans. Even after that ten-year break, they were the ones we listened to when they wanted us back.”

Gary had been a judge on the X Factor so I wondered if that’s where he got the idea of open auditions. “We had the music, the plot, and a good storyline, then I had the idea of holding open auditions on television under the title Let it Shine. I was a bit worried that we may get people who just wanted to be famous. But we were so fortunate – we could not have found a better group than the one we have. They are so good, so talented and they are totally committed to the work ethic. Theatre is hard work with eight shows a week – you have to be committed to do that and they are. I can’t praise them too highly.“ During the television series, both Mark and Howard were off stage encouraging and supporting each team auditioning. Mark, who comes from Oldham, points out: “It was a nice thing for us to do. We were young like them when we started. Rob was only 16 and I was 18 so we tried to cheer them on." Howard, from Droylsden, agrees: “We just wanted to be there for them because it reminded us of the time we started when we were hard-working and appreciative and so are The Band. We really feel responsible for them.” Take That are all fathers and their new stars seem to have brought out the daddy in them, as Gary points out: “You’re right we do feel protective towards them. It’s like when we‘re on

tour, the team we work with becomes like family and that’s the same with this talented group.” The Band is played by young stars AJ Bentley, who studied dance, and Nick Carsberg, who was a classic car restorer. Curtis T Johns had been a song-writer for the past eight years for Matt Cardle and Ray Quinn, as well as owning and running a rugby club in his native Leeds. Yazdan Qafouri is from Iran but was raised in the north east while Sario Solomon made his professional debut at the age of 11 in Oliver! at London’s Theatre Royal. Together, they are collectively known as Five to Five, and won the BBC’s Let It Shine audition against stiff opposition. As we say goodbye before Take That head off to take part in Pride, I wondered what they’d like audiences to take away at the end of the show. Gary sums up. “We’d like them to come out saying, ‘What a great night. We’ve laughed and we’ve cried and we’ve enjoyed ourselves.’ That’s what we’ve always wanted to do in Take That – to make our audiences feel happy! The world premiere had to be here because this is where Take That started. This is Manchester’s musical." As the song says 'Never forget where you’ve come here from!' The advance box-office is already well over the £10 million mark so if you’re a fan don’t leave it too late before you book! buon
appetito At the launch of his new restaurant in Liverpool, Gino D’Acampo takes five with Louisa Castle
K
nown as the charismatic television chef, there is quite a buzz of excitement in the office when the exclusive interview offer with Signore D'Acampo comes through, his trails whilst filming Gino's Italian Escape: Hidden Italy fresh in our minds. When I arrive he is just finishing filming and taking shots with the kids for his bambino menu, looking as if he is in his element and enjoying life, gelato in hand. Before he settles with me, he dashes off to check with the team how launch day is coming along and I watch as diners realise that the man himself is in the house and selfie requests abound. He is happy to oblige. I am welcomed with a cheeky grin and a double cheek kiss and the interview begins. Gino compliments me on the cover of the latest issue, which in turn compliments the colours of the restaurant, so we are off to a good start. My first question has to be about Gino D'Acampo My Restaurants, which are in partnership with the team at Individual Restaurants. The first was in Manchester three years ago , with a second in London Euston, followed by Leeds, Harrogate and now Liverpool and with two more launches this year. "It's all about experiencing proper Italian dining, how we do it in Italy, not a poor copy. It should be relaxed and colourful... slightly loud and it should embrace the family. For me, it's about sharing and living life and that's what we
are doing with the restaurants. We want people to spend four or five hours here and enjoy it. "Here, it is a big site so we have the Prosecco bar, grocery store, mezzanine, terrace and bullion room downstairs. I don't know if you know but this used to be an old bank and the bullion room or games room is actually in the vault where they used to keep things locked away. It's a fabulous space."
“I am grateful to everyone and everything that has happened in my life. Even the tough times Gino's passion is evident as I rush to scribble down and capture his language and sentiments. "We change the menu seasonally and I go to Italy to see where we get the salami or mozzarella. It is important for me to know the whole story from the olives in front of us to the glasses and plates. [I can say that the former, from Tavoliere in Puglia are deliciously sweet for green olives, if a little inelegant to eat as I am trying to retain some sense of cool while interviewing.]" It is at this point that the interview turns from less of an interview and into more of a conversation over Saturday lunch. Gino is open and charming, with a sparkle of mischievousness
33
but not when we are talking about food: that is all business, albeit very passionate and animated business. His love of food comes from his grandfather. Gino would work in his grandfather's restaurant in Italy from about the age of nine and that, as they say, was that, coming to England in his late teens. "London was the international capital of food then so it made sense for me to build my career here. Now, Manchester is very much the cosmopolitan foodie scene, but then it was London. Plus, I fell in love with a beautiful woman, Jessica, my wife. "It is a very happy place for me. I love the British humour and work ethic. If you want
34

something enough and you want to work hard you will achieve it. The people are amazing too. "My proudest moment in business has to be opening my first restaurant [In his personal life it is becoming a father]. It was a magical experience. I have arrived at a point where I can pay all my bills and look after my family so I am being self-indulgent, I know, in wanting to go from five restaurants to seven, then nine. I have a responsibility too, to the employees and team who have been with me for such a long time. "I am grateful to everyone and everything that has happened in my life. Even the tough times. They have made me stronger and the person I am today. I am wiser and better for it."
“Retirement would kill me. Plus, I think my wife wouldn’t know what to do with me!” I raise the idea of taking things easier and relaxing. It doesn't go down well. "I am 41! Retirement would kill me. Plus, I think my wife wouldn't know what to do with me!" So I rephrase the question. Gino laughs. "I love holidays. I should be on holiday right now. I love fishing and being on the boat with
my family and my guitar. Music is important to me and I choose the playlists for the restaurants, taking you from breakfast through to late evening. My own playlist? Well at the moment I love John Mayer, Noel Gallagher and a bit of AC/DC, the Beatles – obviously. And who can resist a bit of Rod Stewart?! "I am a big fan of the old Italian style, the Vespas and styling of the ’60s and ’70s and old movies. I am really sorry but my favourite has to be The Godfather; classics like that, you can't beat them." And what of cooking at home? "I love eating simple food. It doesn't matter what type, it could be Chinese or it could be Italian. I don't want to waste too much time either. It should always be about the ingredients and they should be the star of the show." With that, our star of the show has a full afternoon ahead of him and a very busy restaurant. The futurist of fashion, French visionary Pierre Cardin inspired a new silhouette for the female figure. Synonymous with the 1950s and 1960s retro look of those decades, Cardin played with form to create unusual geometric shapes: cocktail dresses with conical breasts and ‘bubbled’ hems. This guide to Cardin’s entire oeuvre goes to show that his quest for new creative expression is far from over.

Elsa Schiaparelli’s rebellious ideas for haute couture were born during the hard inter-war years, taking form from the avant-garde Surrealist scene. Conspiring with artisans, painters, sculptors and writers, the demure Italian figure worked with the likes of illustrator Marcel Vertès and flamboyant painters René Magritte and Salvador Dalí. Together, as Elsa decreed, they made fashion sense “the trend of history and precede it”.

We are Very Much Amused Blackpool’s Jenna Coleman and partner Tom Hughes, from Chester, talk love stories and accents with Natalie Anglesey at the wrap party for Victoria
I
TV’s glorious evocation of the life of legendary British monarch, Victoria, has captured 7.7 million television viewers across this country and almost as many in America. As a nation we love period dramas and this is a compelling look at the private lives of prominent figures we’ve only read about in our history books. “Victoria and Albert were the Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton of their day – only the jewels were bigger,” laughs screen-writer and co-producer, Daisy Goodwin. “We’ve already seen Victoria ascend to the throne at 18, fall madly in love with Prince Albert and marry him when they were only 19. But they had very different temperaments. Albert wanted to protect her, while feisty Victoria was trying to be wife, mother and queen. In this new season we witness their tempestuous marriage and the births of three of their nine children who formed a European dynasty. In spite of it being an arranged marriage, they were both in love and faithful during their 24 years together and enjoyed a healthy, sexual relationship – as their nine children proved!" The stars are two young actors who were already making a mark long before they were cast as Victoria and Albert. It’s been a meteoric career rise for both Blackpool’s Jenna Coleman,
40
who plays Victoria and, similarly, for Chester’s Tom Hughes, who portrays the stoic Prince Albert. A couple in real life – although they guard their privacy closely – on screen they enact one of the greatest love stories of all time. Supported by family and friends at the launch, Jenna confessed she knew little about the Victorian era before she was asked to play the role. “When I was learning my lines I found it useful to read bits of Victoria’s diaries – although I tried to keep to the time span we were filming. One of the things I love about her is how open and impulsive she is. But she also had this will of iron, which she needed to survive as queen. I have great admiration for her both as a woman and a monarch.” To play Albert, 32-year-old Tom not only grew a moustache but had to come to grips with a believable German accent. “I had an excellent voice coach and I used to go to sleep listening to tapes of the accent! They really were quite different as a couple, as Albert’s passion was for logic and science and he wanted to contribute to an era on the brink of the Industrial Revolution.” Indeed his doting aunt confirmed to me later that some Germans told her they thought Tom really was German! Jenna’s interest in acting developed when she was head girl at Blackpool’s Arnold School.

Her grandmother had named her after Jenna Wade, the character played by Priscilla Presley in the 80's hit American television series Dallas. Jenna was a member of In Yer Space theatre company and performed at the Edinburgh Festival, winning an award for her performance. It was to be the first of many. While auditioning for drama schools in 2005, Jenna was chosen to play Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale and followed that with the BBC drama series Waterloo Road. She appeared in BBC Four’s television adaptation of John Braine’s Room at the Top, and in Julian Fellowes' Titanic. They both appeared in Stephen Poliakoff's drama series Dancing on the Edge.
42
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature
In 2011, Jenna made her feature film debut in Captain America: The First Avenger and the following year won the role of Clara, companion of the eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith. She continued in the role after his regeneration into the twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi – until she left to play Victoria. Like Jenna, Tom was passionate about acting while still at Upton-by-Chester High School and was a member of Cheshire Youth Theatre, as well as Jigsaw Music Theatre Company. He went on to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2008, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in acting.
“One of the things I love about her is how open and impulsive she is” – Jenna Coleman Success came quickly, as the following year Tom featured in the BBC series Casualty 1909, and ITV's Trinity. A musician, he appeared in the Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll as Dury's bandmate Chaz Jankel. Tom had been a guitarist in the indie band Quaintways, but left in 2011 when he was named one of BAFTA’s Brits to Watch. As his acting career took off, Tom starred as Bruce Pearson in comedy-drama Cemetery Junction, written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. In the same year he appeared in Sweet Nothings at the Young Vic, and was nominated for a BIFA Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He played pupil barrister Nick Slade in BBC’s Silk, and appeared in the BBC thriller Page Eight, alongside Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. A variety of roles followed, including the leading role of Joe Lambe, in the BBC Cold War drama, The Game. Tom grinned at the suggestion that costume drama was glamorous. “We’ve a great team who look after as wonderfully, but we film on location – so the lavish sets of Buckingham Palace are created in a huge aircraft-hanger on
a disused runway in Yorkshire! We’ve had to rehearse lots of dancing, fencing and riding. I discovered horses don’t particularly like me – although eventually I found a couple who just about tolerated me!” Jenna, who was wearing the highest black Jimmy Choos I’ve ever seen, adds: “I had to learn to ride side-saddle, but got used to it, although I had a rather frisky show pony. The costumes are so beautiful I didn’t mind wearing corsets for seven months on set as it helps with posture – but I did have to wear a variety of bumps to signify each pregnancy. Filming with so many children on set was often quite hilarious as, in between takes, their parents hid behind pillars holding bags of crisps to keep them happy!” With such busy schedules I wondered if they found time to return to Blackpool and Chester? “We live in London because it’s an exciting city but, with today’s technology, staying in touch with our families isn’t difficult at all,” Tom smiled. “We do try to get home when we can but today we have our families and cast members here because we’re about to enjoy our wrap party at the end of filming.” The rest of us will just have to wait for the end of this season of Victoria – but I can promise you, it will definitely be worth the wait! Victoria, Series 2, ITV, Sunday 9pm. Plus, watch out for a 2017 Christmas special.

ith its elliptical design, warm 18ct rose gold and delicate diamond pavé detail, the new Surround collection from David M Robinson is as versatile as it is elegant. Amongst the collection are two sets of stunning earrings – one a satisfyingly substantial set of rose gold orbs covered entirely with tiny diamonds, the other a more slender double ellipse design, the outer oval covered with the same pavé diamonds, the inner oval contrastingly uncluttered. The collection also features a stunning ring with
similarly contrasting double ovals – but the real masterpiece is the Surround Link Bracelet, which encompasses interlocking diamond-encrusted and naked rose gold orbs for a simple, charming and utterly opulent aesthetic. Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Only Watch, Audemars Piguet Audemars Piguet’s Only Watch piece is the first black ceramic perpetual calendar from the brand to feature a ceramic caseback, as well as a black oscillating weight, visible through a sapphire display back. A striking ‘skylight’ blue dial contrasts with an attention-grabbing orange-tinted moon. Estimate: £65,000-£98,000
Reference 5208T-010, Patek Philippe Launched in 2011, Patek Philippe’s Reference 5208 brings together three of the most intricate complications in watchmaking: a minute repeater, a perpetual calendar and a monopusher chronograph. The 5208T-010, created specially for Only Watch 2017, is the first titanium version of this timepiece. Estimate: £735,000-£890,000

Only Watch 2017 The biggest names in watchmaking unite to raise millions for muscular dystrophy
I
n an auction like no other, every two years a collection of the world’s leading watch marques create one-off timepieces destined for Only Watch, a charitable initiative supported by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, that raises money for research into muscular dystrophy. Since its first edition in 2005, Only Watch has raised more than £23 million, thanks, in no small part, to Patek Philippe’s Ref. 5016, which became the most expensive wristwatch ever sold when it achieved £5.7 million at Only Watch 2015. (It has since been bested by the same brand’s Ref. 1518, which sold in November 2016 for £8.4 million.) After an around-the-world tour, the 49 one-off models will be auctioned at Christie’s, Geneva, on 11 November. Expect the following lots to whip the gathered horophiles into a frenzy.
Laureato 2017 Special Edition, GirardPerregaux
Launched in the 1970s, cult sports watch Laureato was revived in 2016 in a limited run before becoming a permanent collection in 2017. For Only Watch, GirardPerregaux has issued a bronze-cased version. Estimate: £12,000-£15,000
Big Bang Unico Sapphire Usain Bolt, Hublot Hublot’s Big Bang Unico Sapphire Usain Bolt is a transparent timepiece created with sapphire, one of the most difficult materials to machine. A counter at 9 o’clock bears the silhouette of Bolt performing his trademark victory sign. The 45mm piece will be auctioned alongside a second yellow-gold strap, as well as the chance to meet the fastest man on Earth. Estimate: £40,000-£65,000 47

Night Fever Embrace the high glamour and carefree elegance of the Studio 54 era Words: mhairi graham

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Collection
T
his season, fashion designers continue to mine the 1970s for inspiration – looking to the hedonistic, hazy time of disco, in all its glitzy exuberance and bohemian splendour. High glamour prevails, as sequins, silver frills and dramatic flared silhouettes populate AW17 collections from the likes of Saint Laurent, Balmain and Dolce & Gabbana. A piece of statement jewellery is a versatile, modern way to effortlessly embrace the decadence of disco this season, be it by slipping on a swishing set of chandelier earrings, or updating eveningwear with a swinging pendant necklace or showpiece cuff. These sparkling power pieces create instant allure, whether paired with cashmere or a cocktail dress. Step forward Jessica McCormack’s new collection, which takes its cue from the fabled glamour of the Studio 54 era. Coined Trip the Light Fantastic, wing-shaped ear climbers and lustrous fringes evoke a 1970s aesthetic – all crafted in polished yellow gold with glittering white diamonds. “I wanted the collection to be high-glamour but with a subtle sensibility,” says McCormack. “Pieces that could easily work with your everyday wardrobe and which moved in harmony with the body, like they are dancing.” Make like Elizabeth Taylor and decorate your décolletage with weighty sautoirs and neckclinching chokers, with options ranging from Chaumet’s dramatic new high jewellery collection to Messika’s multi-fringed showstopper, which offers all the sparkle of a disco ball. Pippa Small’s Turquoise Mountain diffusion line glimmers with oversized gold cuffs, tasselled necklaces and cascading earrings that would be right at home on the dancefloor at Studio 54. “I grew up during that era and remember the glamour surrounding the fashions of the time,” says Small. “People like Paloma Picasso and Lauren Hutton, who were so timeless in their style. I love the bold statement that this sort of jewellery creates.” Earrings are big this season, figuratively and literally, dropping and dangling from every
nook and crook. Amrapali offers seductive, 1970s-inspired swirls while diamonds go disco at Diane Kordas, dotted on hoops and geometric designs. Continue the ear trend with Suzanne Kalan’s elegant drop designs, strung with shimmering chains. Seventies stalwarts like Bulgari continue to hold court, sparking Saturday night fever with spectacular new Serpenti Seduttori jewels, set with vibrant pink tourmalines. Van Cleef & Arpels’ Alhambra collection, a hallmark of the 1970s, remains hugely popular and is available in a spectrum of shimmering hues. Embrace bangles in abundance, stacked up the arm, or add punch with a single statement cuff. And what would a reference to the 1970s be without highlighting the era’s greatest enduring jewellery icon – the seminal Cartier Love Bracelet, created by designer and Studio 54 regular Aldo Cipullo in 1969? Nearly 50 years on, it remains a gleaming symbol of romance and timeless style. See you on the dancefloor.

Keep it in the Family Aston Martin and Zagato have announced the debut of the Vanquish Zagato Volante, followed by confirmation that, not only will the Vanquish Zagato Speedster enter production, but will be joined by a Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake. This ‘family’ of four Vanquish Zagato models will yield a total of 325 cars. The first member of the family, the Vanquish Zagato Coupe, entered production in late 2016. Next to enter production was the Vanquish Zagato Volante. Once again strictly limited to 99 cars (all of which have been sold), production has commenced and deliveries will be completed in 2018. Of the two remaining models, the Vanquish Zagato Speedster is the rarest, with a production run of just 28 cars. As you would expect from one of the most collectible and covetable Aston Martins ever, all 28 Vanquish Zagato Speedsters have been sold, with deliveries also scheduled for 2018. Completing the quartet, the Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake will enter production in 2018, with a total build run of 99 cars. With all four cars based upon the Vanquish S, each Zagato enjoys the combination of 600PS naturally-aspirated V12 mated to the smooth, slick-shifting Touchtronic III transmission. Together with adaptive damping, the Vanquish Zagato family promises exceptional driving pleasure that is every bit as stimulating as it looks! (astonmartin.com)
Why We Love Noble M600 #1 Where it is made - Good old blighty, one of a handful of super cars that is! #2 The speed - 0-120mph in an astonishing 8.9 seconds with a race setting of 650bhp #3 The price - To beat this car we reckon you will need to get a Veyron, which is £1,000,000. This makes the £200,000 price tag seem pretty well worth it! #4 The drama - I personally have a soft spot as this was the first track car I was introduced to...what an experience, what noise, speed and handling!
The Decider The 2017 FIA World Rally Championship is proving to be the most exciting and fiercely-fought in years, and this autumn’s Wales Rally GB (26-29 October) will now be pivotal in determining the winner. With just three rounds remaining on the WRC calendar – Spain, GB and Australia – Sébastien Ogier holds a slender 17-point advantage over arch-rival Thierry Neuville, with 90 points still to be won. But while Ogier and Neuville are locked in a two-way title tussle, neither is discounting the chances of Ogier’s fast-finishing team-mate, Ott Tänak. With two wins from his last four starts, the Estonian hot-shoe is closing the gap on the pair of pacesetters. Whatever the outcome in Spain, this year’s Dayinsure Wales Rally GB will be the most important and thrilling for many years. (walesrallygb.com) 71

pistons at
dawn Chris Hall cringes as he approaches oncoming traffic in the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, but that doesn’t put him off, in the slightest. Could this be the best Rolls ever?
73
Rolls-Royce Dawn Engine: 6.6 litre Power: 563 BHP 0-60mph: 4.8 seconds Top Speed: 190 MPH Overall length: 5.3m
G
etting acquainted with a Rolls-Royce is a ceremonial experience. It’s a cross between touring a show home in an upmarket development – “here, sir, is the transmission lever; through the alcove on your right you have the wing mirrors and just behind you is the sun terrace” – and being introduced to a minor royal. I almost feel I should offer a deferential nod when the Spirit of Ecstasy rises from the prow. I certainly should be wearing something smarter than a hoodie and trainers. Comparisons to architecture are never far from a Rolls-Royce. For years they were described as “stately homes on wheels” (addressing the handling as much as the size) and, cliché notwithstanding, when one pitches up on my driveway I do feel like I should have got planning permission first. The Dawn, though, is more urban boutique hotel than country pile. Mine (for now, at least) is Savile Row sharp, in midnight blue with fiery orange leather and Canadel rosewood trim. It’s Ozwald Boateng in automotive form. It is big, yes, and for the asking price of £268,130 with options you could just about get on the property ladder in a London postcode, but it’s not too big. It’s barely longer and no wider than a Bentley Continental GT that recently sat in the same spot, but it dwarfs it for presence, from the colonnade of the grille to the cavernous wheel arches. Inside, the controls are almost apologetic, as if to say what a frightful shame it is that there have to be levers, buttons and screens in such a nice place as this. The seat is, by an immeasurable distance, the most comfortable thing I’ve sat on
74
in years, let alone in a car. The doors, though, are my favourite thing about this car – not just for their welldocumented suicidal tendencies, but for their sheer bulk. I’m pretty sure the designer’s previous work was in a bank vault. Once you’re strapped in, you can’t reach to close them, so there’s a little button that softly draws them into place. Do both at once and it’s as if the car is firmly, reassuringly, clasping its hands together and saying, “ready when you are”. I did, of course, drive the Dawn, as well as just look at it. Leaving south London wasn’t as hair-raising as I’d feared; the ride is – naturally – superbly comfortable and cares not a whiff for potholes or speed bumps. The steering ratio, especially if you’re used to anything vaguely sporty, is surprisingly high and, coupled with the width and – I keep coming back to this word – presence, of the car, leads me to adopt a different driving style: more chauffeurly, more sedate; smoothly wafting my way around. It helped that we left on time and had no urgent need to arrive, but I defy anyone to feel stressed out, by traffic or anything else, in this car. That’s not to say the Dawn has no sense of urgency. With 563 horsepower coming from the 6.6 litre V12, it can summon plenty of speed and, on the rare occasion that I pulled briskly away from the lights, there was a rich exhaust noise to discover. On the motorway it’s unruffled cruising at high speed – you’d be worried if it wasn’t – but you do start to feel every ounce of the car’s weight when you’re braking or changing lanes. I wouldn’t hesitate to cross continents in the Dawn (if someone else stumped up for the petrol) but
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Motoring
I’d take A-roads all the way. It just feels more at home between 30mph and 60mph, not because it’s a car for pootling old folks, but because it doesn’t need to rush. There is even a sport mode, but you’re not here for hooning about. Laudably, Rolls is eager to position its “smaller” models – Ghost, Wraith, Dawn – as “drivers’ cars”, and this was undoubtedly that (although I’d love to recline in the back seats, one arm on the Riva-yacht-esque decking with the roof down). But for me, driving a Rolls-Royce should be about the experience, not 0-60 times. My destination was the peerlessly lovely Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa in West Sussex, and this meant we took our fair share of B-roads and even single-track routes. The Dawn wasn’t fazed, but I came out in a sweat every time we met oncoming traffic. A word to those who make sat-nav systems for luxury cars – you need to install an option that keeps you on Rolls-Royce-sized roads. Bailiffscourt is a fascinating place. To the uncurious it would appear simply to be another very nice English country hotel, good to cosy up in over the winter and perfect for G&T among the peacocks in the summer. And it is all those things – with a top-rate spa attached, to boot. But why it interests me is its history: it’s not early medieval, as it looks, but dates from the 1920s, when the evidently single-minded Lord Moyne, of Guinness brewing fame, decided that what Climping beach needed was a 13th-century manor house hotel. The fact that it didn’t have one was a
perfectly surmountable obstacle. The periodcorrect materials were sourced, from stonemasonry to reclaimed oak panelling, and expert architects set to work creating something that balanced authenticity with modern needs (such as underfloor and wall-chambered heating). The result is a trompe l’oeil – a glorious, well-judged piece of work that cossets you in the best of British luxury, without compromise. I think you can see where I’m going with this. The Dawn is everything the Rolls-Royce name has ever stood for – luxurious, prestigious, refined, and steeped in history that has the potential to really weigh it down. But it’s a modern car to drive, and with the wealth of customisation options – in truth, there is no such thing as a non-bespoke Rolls-Royce – you can make it as edgy (or as old-school) as you like. An outstanding car that really has no equal anywhere. (rolls-roycemotorcars.com)

What came first, the hotel or the Michelinstar restaurant? Traditionally, the former precedes the latter – but not in the case of Akelarre, the first five-star hotel in San Sebastián, that adjoins the ten-year-old, three-star eatery of the same name. The hilltop hotel boasts a wellness centre as well as the chance to sleep off the inevitable post-meal food coma. From £379 per night (akelarre.net)

Weekend away Llangoed Hall, Brecon WORDs: louisa Castle
C
lough Williams Ellis, architect and visionary, has a special place in my heart. I married my husband at Ellis’ most famous Italianesque creation, Portmeirion, so when we were invited to visit another of his designs we jumped at the chance. Llangoed Hall has been a hotel since 1990, lovingly and sympathetically restored in true Edwardian style by Sir Bernard Ashley, husband of renowned textile designer Laura Ashley. The building is set in 17 acres of parkland, with the Wye Valley rolling hills as a backdrop and, despite the grandness of its tree-lined driveway, there is a warmth in the ivy-clad stone. This warmth is something that the current owner (since 2012) is committed to continuing. The team prides itself on offering an ‘at home’ experience, with no reception desk, spacious lounge areas and family photos adorning the walls. The hotel is also home to an exquisite fine art collection, including James McNeil Whistler, which you stumble upon over pre-dinner drinks or a stroll up the grand staircase to your room. Our room was a spacious, charming master suite, complete with a spacious sitting, dining and sleeping area, not to mention roll-top bath and views across the parkland. We were here to escape and unwind, with good food and the great outdoors on our minds. The restaurant, headed up by Nick Brodie, is one of the only ones in a Welsh hotel to be listed in the Waitrose Good Food Guide’s ‘Top
78
50 UK Restaurants 2017’, with two seasonal eight-course tasting menus on offer, ‘prestige’ and ‘vegetarian’, accompanied by the essential wine flight. Intrigued by the vegetarian offer, I persuaded my meat-eating husband to join me. With parsnip hash, pheasant egg, mushroom fricasee, soft polenta, and Bath soft cheese with salt-baked pear on the menu, it was a delightful journey to take our taste buds on, each course teasing all of our senses. There were, however, two stand-out plates: the potato gnocchi, squash and garden greens, and the Hafod Eccles cake. The former was so simple, light and indulgent and the latter – well, as a Yorkshire girl who made everyone have fruit cake and cheese at her wedding, it was always going to be a hit. Just as the whole vegetarian dining extravaganza was for a cynical husband. The restaurant team was charming and knowledgeable and answered our questions with politeness. One thing of note: there is no dress code in the restaurant, beyond the expected smart casual. Sometimes culinary offerings of this type come with a stuffy environment, but not so here. We dined with obvious foodies and happy amateurs, regulars and those celebrating a special occasion, and all were at home. As a destination hotel, Llangoed offers a whole host of opportunities to explore, from getting lost in the bookstores of Hay-on-Wye to the rugged beauty of the Brecon Beacons, so you’ll never be short of things to do. GETTING THERE
Take note: the Eurostar is a gem. Not only does it take you direct to central Paris without any airport faff, but you can take two large pieces of luggage (with no liquid restrictions) and enjoy proper comfort, with plenty of legroom, WiFi and on-board entertainment. Add to this you can add the Manchester Piccadilly leg to your booking, a quick check-in (30 minutes before departure), a speedy journey time and that under-fours travel free, and you see the appeal. One-way standard class fares (Manchester Piccadilly - St Pancras International – Gare du Nord) from £99 (based on a return journey) (eurostar.com)

It is a truth universally acknowledged that, to the Parisians, luxury is much more than just a standard to be sought – it’s a lifestyle and, as Gemma Knight discovers, one that sits at the beating heart of this most cosmopolitan and decadent of cities
WHERE TO STAY
La Réserve Hotel & Spa If, like me, your idea of a perfect bolthole is one which feels like your very own 1960s Parisian penthouse (think Brigitte Bardot in La Parisienne), then La Réserve – which, in a city filled with some of the world’s most chic ‘palace status’ hotels, still manages to shine – is ideal. The ratio of rooms and suites (40) to members of staff (150) alone tells you something about the level of personally tailored service on offer here, with every detail geared towards creating the sense that you are weekending at the chateau of an aristocratic acquaintance, rather than checking in to a hotel. It’s no coincidence, then, that the grand stone building – nestled close to the Champs Elysées and overlooking the Rue du Faubourg St-Honoré – was originally built for the Duc de Morny, Napoleon III’s half-brother, and later owned by fashion designer Pierre Cardin, before finally being acquired by multi-millionaire Michel Reybier, who re-did the interiors from scratch in a sumptuous blend of Louis XV decadence and exotic Chinoiserie. Rooms have all those little touches – propersized toiletries, everything from lighting to room service controlled with an iPad and a fully complimentary in-room bar – still boasted by surprisingly few top hotels, and done well by even fewer. Discretion is valued above all else, and applied across the board with deft expertise by amiable staff, while there’s also a candlelit spa with a tranquil pool, a leather-bound book-filled library (complete with honesty bar) and two restaurants, one of which boasts two Michelin stars. 42 Avenue Gabriel (lareserve-paris.com)

WHERE TO GO
clockwise from above: le bristol lobby; little red door interior; little red door entrance
I am a firm believer that, whether it’s your first visit or your fifteenth, the best way to get the most out of a short city break is to walk – as far and for as long as your legs will carry you. Avoid any other method of transport – particularly the underground variety – as much as you can, and pound those pavements, soaking in every sound, sight and smell on offer. Paris is fabulously walkable, so my advice is to head down towards the Seine from La Réserve, then walk west along the north bank until you reach Pont de Bir-Hakeim, then cross to the south bank and walk east until you hit Pont Notre-Dame. This will take you on a giant loop and through a whole host of delightfully varied areas.
For the true cutting-edge cocktail connoisseur, only the jewel in the city’s mixology crown will do WHERE TO EAT
114 Faubourg, Le Bristol When evening rolls around, reward your day-long excursion with dinner at the Michelinstar 114 Faubourg, one of two fabulous restaurants at the renowned Le Bristol hotel. Just a stone’s throw from La Réserve, this smart, distinguished eatery offers imaginative brasseriestyle cooking from head chef Eric Frechon, with a warm, sophisticated ambience and foie gras ravioli, hand-chopped beef tartar and the spectacular two-person Irish Angus rib steak among the highlights of its menu. Peppered with soothing purples and golds, the space is
peaceful and inviting, and – be warned – extremely hard to leave, after a large steak and several glasses of soporific red wine. 114 rue du Faubourg SaintHonoré (lebristolparis.com)
WHERE TO DRINK Little Red Door
Although Paris is certainly not short of wonderful watering holes – a special mention here to the eye-wateringly expensive but deliciously decadent Hemingway Bar at Le Ritz – for the true cuttingedge cocktail connoisseur, only the jewel in the city’s mixology crown will do. Down a narrow street in the 10th arrondissement is a small red door and, beyond it, a cosy den of chemical iniquity, with a concept menu (inspired, at the moment, by architectural design movements) and some of what might be the nicest and happiest bartenders in the world (who, incidentally, all had to take exhaustive architecture courses before the menu was launched). The glorious thing about this place is that, while most bars are one or the other, Little Red Door is both a relaxed, friendly place to go for a quiet drink, and a highly-regarded experience destination. How it manages so effortlessly and harmoniously to be both, I don’t care to know – it might break the spell. 60 rue Charlot (lrdparis.com)

T
atler magazine awarded The Oitavos five-star hotel in Cascais (the north of Portugal) on the Lisbon coast, the accolade of ‘the place to be seen’. I swear Roger Federer was sporting lion-embroidered Gucci slippers as I stepped into their chic steel lift. The elegant hotel front desk brigade refused to confirm or deny my inquisition. Situated 20 minutes from the hip scene of Lisbon, ten minutes from the cool crowd in Cascais and just a two-hour 50-minute direct flight from Manchester via Tap airlines, The Oitavos is perched on the

of Quinta de Marinha – 168 acres of glorious Sintra Cascias National park which had me reminisce about the Hamptons infamous sand dunes and waving grasses. The iconic hotel building resembles a pulsating fluid steel flowing river of space, punctuated with angular windows that nod towards its use. The building is architecturally hot (as is Portugal in spring time – which is always good to know when Cheshire was simultaneously raining) designed by Portugese architect Jose Amaral Anahory with a floors tickled by utilitarian full-length voiles in notes of baby blue and crisp whites. All inspired by the hotel’s sea views, I’m guessing. Crisp white organic linen tops the tables, and rooms are dressed in simple and contemporary furniture pieces with fine art sprinkled decadently around. Resplendent of something from Elle Decoration, I observe my vista and imagine this is how a photoshoot in the Hollywood Hills might appear.

The hotel services are bountiful and state-of-theart. Their 18-hole golf course is ranked in the top 100 links courses around the world. From the course, it’s possible to witness both views of the Atlantic Ocean and also the Sintra mountains, which makes for a unique experience in nature. The course was designed by the renowned Arthur Hills and is a par-71 course and, most famously, hosted the Portugese Open four times. The hotel gymnasium is a short walk or shuttle bus trip away at the Health and Racket Club, and facilities include state-of-the-art exercise studios, a semi Olympic pool, squash and tennis courts, gym and paddle courts. In addition, there are visually stunning cycle routes around the hotel. The Oitavos spa was one of my favourite experiences and perfect for anyone wanting to feel pampered. The therapists are world class and I can highly recommend the sea salt and essential oils scrub that left me feeling sparkling and silky smooth. The Oitavos offers 143 bedrooms and I enjoyed my stay in a superior double loft with a rate that included breakfast. The bedroom was expansive and with a generously sized balcony offering views over the golf course; it was breezy and bright. The design echoed that of the reception and communal areas with streamlined organic parts. The bath appeared to be an extension of the floor and was a seamless single piece. Spacious and surprisingly comfortable for something so ergonomically enhanced. The wardrobes and work space all echoed this same design, and my bed was so wide and luxurious that I was able to sprawl spread-eagle across the width of it and enjoy eight hours of peaceful uninterrupted sleep! Finally I come to the tastiest part of my magical stay and it’s to mention the variety of food options available, beginning with a breakfast menu that satisfied all my gluten,
dairy and wheat-free fantasies and which included lashings of Lisbon’s famous custard tart; pasteis de nata and was presented like a pretty picture. Ipsylon is the hotel’s main restaurant that sees their celebrity chef working with local fishermen to source fresh fish for his dishes. The menu is a visual feast and I’d highly recommend sampling it all as I’ve never experienced such sublime and unique flavour combinations. There’s also a hip sushi bar and a decedent chef’s table experience, both of which seemed popular and lively. For anyone who wants to sightsee, the surrounding area is ripe with picture-perfect castles and panoramic vistas and for fun I’d suggest you hire a Moke Buddy Tour. Ask for Nuno to show you around the area. You won’t regret this and I’m not going to spoil your surprise with any more details. Enjoy! (theoitavos.com)

An Arabian
Adventure Rebecca Underwood visits the capital of the United Arab Emirates looking for some winter sun and sumptuous surroundings
R
uled by HM, the Emir Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is a modern, prosperous city that offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the colourful tapestry of Arabian history and culture. Located at the head of a T-shaped island in the Persian Gulf, the largest of the emirates covers an area of only 375 square miles, but there is much to explore. Al Ain Oasis is a popular attraction and, as one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited settlements, it was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Featuring ruins of circular stone tombs, a number of wells, palaces and towers, the site provides a fascinating insight into desert life dating back to 2500 BC. To learn more, visit the Al Ain National Museum and admire the extensive collections of exhibits. For those yearning for a true Arabian adventure, consider a thrilling desert safari on board a robust four-wheel-drive vehicle. The Liwa Oasis, located on the edges of the Empty Quarter, is where you will find 300-metre-high sand dunes: ideal for a spot of what is known as ‘wadi bashing’ or ‘dune driving’. Highly skilled local drivers negotiate unexpected hazards in the harsh desert surroundings with ease, and for those seeking a high-octane adrenaline rush and a very bumpy ride, it is the ideal excursion. Wildlife lovers may
be fortunate to spot the odd resident, including Arabian Oryx, gazelles and hyenas. To get up-close and personal with feathered residents, visit the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital, located on Sweihan Road. The noble tradition of falconry in the Arab world dates back to 3500 BC, when it was practised in Iraq and it is known that the Bedouin used falcons as a means to hunt for meat. The Falcon Hospital, which was established in 1999, provides individual air conditioned rooms for more than two hundred Saqr and Peregrine Falcons.

Immerse deeper into local culture and wander around the Al Jahili fort, located in the Al Ain area. Built in 1891 to defend the mountain passes and palm groves, it really is a special spot. Take a leisurely stroll around the west wing of the fort, which is now used to house a permanent exhibition of photographs taken by the late Sir Wilfred Patrick Thesiger. The highly respected explorer and author embarked on the most arduous journey imaginable in 1945, crossing the 650,000 square kilometre Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter), the largest desert in the world, on foot and by camel.
Canal Hotel is directly opposite the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and provides the highest standards of comfort and service. This ultra stylish, Venetian-inspired property is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and features a gorgeous private beach and an impressive outdoor pool covering 1,600 square metres. Plump sun loungers ensure that occupants may dine in-situ and the hotel’s Al Fresco restaurant offers a wide range of lunch boxes which are promptly delivered by bicycle. Other dining venues include Giornotte, which presents Italian cuisine served with aplomb. Club level guests are welcome to access the complimentary Club Lounge, which provides concierge and butler services and presents an excellent breakfast buffet extravaganza, midday snacks, a sumptuous afternoon tea, and hors d’oeuvres, cordials and desserts, served with panache.
“If you are a dedicated water babe, opt for a twobedroom villa with your very own plunge pool” Mingle with the locals and visit one of Abu Dhabi’s most spectacular landmarks, the opulent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which features 80 towering domes, sparkling 24-karat gold chandeliers, more than a thousand columns, and the world’s largest hand-woven carpet. The structure’s shimmering gold and white hues are flooded with sunshine during the day and floodlit at night by an impressive system of lighting that reflects the phases of the moon; and the reflective pools add to the overall beauty. For those seeking their own luxurious residence and a true home-from-home living experience, the Marriott Executive Apartments, located right in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s downtown area, feature fully serviced apartments with one, two or three bedrooms and provide the highest standards of comfort and service. We relaxed in a stylishly furnished two-bedroom apartment measuring 132 square metres, with enormous windows flooding the area with light. The spacious lounge with plump sofas and a huge flat screen television provided the perfect retreat after a busy day exploring the city and we took advantage of the fully equipped kitchen with every appliance including an oven, hob, refrigerator, dish washer and washer/dryer. For guests with a preference for dining out, the adjacent Marriott Hotel Downtown offers a number of bustling venues including the very popular Kuzbara, which features an open kitchen and presents a first-class international

Gary’s story began when he opened Sticky Walnut in Hoole, Chester in 2011, famously having to choose between installing his ‘must-have’ Rational Combi Oven or buying new tables and chairs. He went for the oven and has never looked back. Six years later his fourth restaurant opened its doors in September. loves
What is your favourite Ingredient? I don’t have a specific favourite. It varies depending on the time of year, as I’m very influenced by the seasons. I also love to forage for ingredients whenever I can, which again is dependent on the seasons. Elderflowers can be foraged from around May to July and my current favourite ingredient would have to be pickled elderflowers. What is your favourite food? Working in this industry means you get the opportunity to experience many different dishes, ingredients and styles of food. Trying new flavours comes with the job but, I’m a Manchester boy at heart. I was born and raised in Audenshaw and when it comes to my favourite, for me it would have to be a good pie served with peas and of course, gravy. What is your favourite piece of kitchen kit? We have some amazing state-of-the-art equipment in the kitchen here at The French. We have machines which are at the forefront of the industry, including hi-tech cabinets to store herbs to keep them ‘just picked’ fresh. But my favourite is the sugar lamp. This has a ceramic heating element above a hollow metal box and it heats sugar to a consistent temperature making it pliable enough to work with. What is your desert island recipe? It would have to be something with lamb. The north west produces some exceptional quality lamb and I enjoy the saddle. I would say my recipe would be a barbequed saddle of lamb accompanied with peas, lettuce and ramson capers, which are native to the UK. (the-french.co.uk)
Mexican Wave As the end of summer approaches, you may want to imagine yourself back on a beach in sunnier climes. If so, then pour a glass of Mezcal Amores - Mexico’s finest mezcal (made from the agave plant, like tequila but with fewer restrictions). Mezcal Amores is smokier than tequila, it’s a smooth spirit which can be enjoyed on its own or in a range of amazing cocktails. Amores is made from agave which has absorbed solar energy for six to 30 years before being cut and made into mezcal, which means it is definitely sunshine in a glass. (teaandtequilatrading.com)

SPOTLIGHT ON... The Vicarage W ords : jan clarke
Freehouse and Rooms
I
recently visited The Vicarage, a charming Grade II-listed, 17th century pub, located just outside Holmes Chapel. I can sum up my visit in just two words – the lamb. It. Was. Truly. Delicious. I know, that’s more than two words, but forget the two words, this lamb needs talking about. The Vicarage is full of country comfort combined with quirky touches: the unique wallpaper in reception is a real talking point and has guests smiling as soon as they come through the door. My companion and I stayed in a bright en-suite room, dined in the restaurant and enjoyed a cooked breakfast the following morning. We were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to our room. Then, before we’d finished unpacking, another member of staff appeared with fresh milk, and we took tea in our room, served in pretty, vintage china cups. We’d booked an evening meal in the restaurant and, when we entered, it was already busy. It had a cosy atmosphere, created by the warm décor and huge traditional fireplace, which was filled with candles. The candlelight was the perfect backdrop for evening dining and would make an ideal spot from which to enjoy a meal on a winter’s evening. Staff were relaxed and knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble. First, we were presented with the Drinks Dictionary, a whimsical little book and the “complete and compiled reference book of tipples, libations, poisons and tots”. We did consider the ‘Betsy Flanagan’, the
Great for... Sunday Lunches and those wanting great food in a relaxed pub atmosphere.
Vicarage’s homage to rebellion and debauchery in liquid form but, in the end, opted for two Lavender Hunters; a mix of Hunters gin, Cheshire lavender and Fever Tree tonic. While enjoying our aperitifs, we studied the menu. I eventually decided on the asparagus salad to start, a beautiful light dish of charred asparagus with fresh salad
“The quality of this local product and the care and attention given to its cooking was a joy” and foraged leaves, served with a perfectly runny poached hen’s egg. My companion chose the duck press: a tasty combination of soft confit duck leg, spiced apples, brioche crisp and an intense, sweet red wine syrup. It was clear that, for the chef, the devil was most definitely in the detail. After ordering wine, we moved on to the main course. It’s time to talk about

the lamb. It was a beautifully succulent lamp rump, perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. The quality of this local product and the care and attention given to its cooking was a joy. It was served with a fricassee of jersey royal potatoes, vibrant broad beans, stem broccoli with smokey pancetta, green mint and a redcurrent jus. It was a great mix of classic flavours and innovative plating and I loved it. My dining companion ordered the cod fillet served with a sweet potato dauphinoise, again a classic dish with innovative flair. It also came with buttered kale, confit chorizo and a tomato, garlic and herb salsa. We rounded off our meal with a refreshing lemon posset with steeped berries and a home made cinnamon biscuit and a good selection of cheeses, including Cheshire’s own Burt’s Blue. The Vicarage is a food-led destination: the menu changes depending on the season and is driven by the gardeners, suppliers, famers and foragers of Cheshire. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this traditional Cheshire pub which so obviously cares about the beautiful food it serves. (thevicaragecheshire.com)

The Spirit of
Christmas Penelope Warde discusses the future of events and importance of the personal touch
M
eetings and events have become as essential as marketing and human resources, as organisations increasingly understand the power of face-to-face experiences. While we continue to grapple with uncertain political outcomes, Christmas party season waits for no one. And the same can be said for the events industry. There is continued growth and evolution, and clients are requiring customisation and creativity in all aspects. It's all about return on investment. Liz Taylor, of event organiser Taylor Lynn Corporation agrees, "The perception of an unstable economic future, rather than the evidence of it, has meant companies are looking at more focused forms of recognition and entertaining rather than big parties. This is
probably why we have seen more requests this year for the less formal restaurants and bars as venues, rather than large hotels. "Clients are choosing smaller events and more personal ways to entertain their staff. A dinner with some unique entertainment – and a bonus in their pay packet – is seen as preferable to a huge event. It also allows companies to choose unusual venues that will offer a little festive ‘wow’ factor and leave enough in the budget for a free bar!" In the future, the world of events is sure to look very different from today. New technology and travel substitutes will directly compete with face-to-face meetings, but there is no comparable replacement for the value of face-to-face time and shared social experience. No matter what industry you work in, we are all in the people business. Regardless of how tech-savvy you may be, face-to-face meetings are still the most effective way to capture the attention of participants, engage them in conversation and drive productive collaboration. nurture personal relationships with our clients and co-workers, we won't build trust or understanding – both of which are critical to successful partnerships. Enter the Christmas party. Hotly discussed, sometimes avoided, but always remembered. So, what should we be looking at this year? First look for your perfect venue. Are you going bespoke, out for dinner or joining in with some others, adding a spot of networking to the evening? "In choosing a venue for your festive celebrations, some of my favourites work for both small businesses entertaining their teams, and larger companies bringing multiple departments together for one great night out,” Liz Taylor continues. "The view from Cloud 23 with the twinkling lights of Manchester’s skyline is a gorgeous backdrop at Christmas, perfect for post-dinner drinks for a small group, or a larger festive afternoon tea moving into a stylish cocktail party.
“Unusual venues are also a great way to encourage people to join in the fun” "Another hot-spot this year is likely to be Mahiki, as Gary Neville brings this London-based favourite with celebrities and royalty to Manchester. "Unusual venues are also a great way to encourage people to join in the fun. Take Altrincham market – a hub of fresh, informal food and a great lively vibe – or the new Fish Market in the Northern Quarter. And, with so many great football stadiums, a unique experience is a ‘party on the pitch’ in a marquee event. The question is, would they let me? "It is important to remember that Christmas is still Christmas, too. However we dress parties – traditional red, green and gold, or ice-inspired silver and blue – it needs to reflect all the hallmarks of the festive season. You only have to look at a Christmas radio playlist to see that: only at Christmas would Bing Crosby and Noddy Holder blend with current artists so perfectly! So serve the traditional eggnog in a gorgeous cocktail, or mulled wine in a divine jelly dessert. Keep the essence of Christmas, but present it with imagination." (tlc-ltd.co.uk)

Review the Market Will McBride discusses why it might be an ideal time to compare your current mortgage deal to today’s mortgage rates
A
recent study by the Citizens Advice Bureau found that 53 per cent of customers who roll over onto a Standard Variable Rate (SVR) don’t remortgage for 10 years. Furthermore, a quarter of people that did remortgage said that they found the process difficult and that they did not have enough time to do more shopping around. It would appear from these findings that mortgage customers may have seen a reduction in their monthly repayments at the end of their fixed rate deal and decided to remain with their current lender. They may also be
perturbed by the perceived complexity of changing lenders. Just as you did when you took out your first mortgage, it’s important to reevaluate your finances every now and then, and consider all your options in order to know you’ve got a mortgage that is right for you at that moment in time. A couple of things that you need to bear in mind, though if you are considering a switch. You will need to check with your current lender to find out if there are any early repayment charges to switch to a new deal. Also a SVR might well be the right option if you are considering moving house in the short term. However if you have been on your SVR for a number of years and are not looking to move you may well benefit from having a lower loan-tovalue due to repayments you have made or if your house has increased in value. The lower the LTV the lower the rates on offer from lenders. With mortgage rates currently at all-time lows, now might well be the time to think about considering a fixed rate deal; this will provide you with certainty of outgoings for the period of the fix, which helps with household budgeting. This is where we can help at Hartey Wealth Management as our independent mortgage consultant can help guide you through the process.
If you would like to discuss your current mortgage and feel that now is the time to compare your options please feel free to contact us on 0808 168 5866 or info@ harteywm.co.uk and we will be pleased to assist.

For the owner of a truly pampered pooch, we thoroughly recommend getting your hands on some K9 Organics shampoo – not only because it recently won a Janey Loves Platinum Award, but also because the entire range contains only natural ingredients, 98 per cent of which are certified organic, and is completely chemical-free and hand-blended in Cheshire. This month I’m excited to be heading to the Family Pet Show at Event City with Anji and my little brother Aston – a must-attend event for all pet lovers. Divided into three key areas – Watch, Play and Learn – this wonderful event includes dog agility displays, a mini-farm with micro pigs, goats and sheep, plus plenty of facts and advice on your favourite pets, so that you can learn about everything from man’s best friend to the critters that Safari Phil brings along (I won’t spoil the surprise, but you won’t want to miss them). You humans can even get hands-on and have a go with pet obedience, grooming and basic agility, as well as meeting rescued reptiles at one of Crocodile Joe’s shows while he teaches you all about reptile welfare.
“It looks like fun, but most of all I’ll be looking forward to meeting James Bowen” I know Aston is looking forward to checking out the Play zone – he’s no doubt heard about Harry the Kidzbus, the full-size red double decker in the middle of all the ball pools, soft play cushions and swings, although personally I think he’ll be too distracted by all those amazing reptiles. Hey, maybe they’ll let me play in the ball pool instead? It looks like fun. But most of all I’ll be looking forward to meeting James Bowen and having a good chat to his street cat Bob – they’re pretty famous after all those books and the film about them which came out last year, and we furry celebs must stick together, after all. For some scary times on Hallowe’en, Anji and Aston are going to venture out to the enchantment of Chester Zoo, where an evil sorcerer has cast a spell over all the nocturnal animals to steal their special powers. Dogs aren’t allowed, so I’d like you to go along and help them – you’ll need to break the spell with the help of a wise old owl who’ll direct you through a forest filled with musicians, aerialists and acrobats, until you find the special spell-breaking potion. Until next time – when black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, may luck be with you this Hallowe’en! Love and Licks

Enjoy the
Challenge We all grow through being challenged: our perceptions, our abilities, our knowledge and understanding. Joanne Keville says it is fundamental to a good education – whatever your age
W
hile a school curriculum is prescriptive by its very nature, we don’t believe it should limit pupils’ potential. Every child is an individual, they learn differently, are interested in different things, but all can excel, given the right levels of support and challenge. Stepping out of your comfort zone is a scary prospect for many young people. Where a school or a club can make the difference is if the culture is one that embraces ‘having a go’. Schools that normalise it, that emphasise the learning opportunities in failure create confident lifelong learners who embrace challenge. And by using young people’s natural sense of community and optimism to develop a peer group which values support and nurture, schools can create an environment where cheering replaces jeering and where pupils understand the powerful impact of having a go even if they have not mastered the skill, yet. From Reception to Sixth Form it is vital that school is a warm, supportive environment, for pupils to grow and develop with confidence. As teachers, we have the chance to model a kinder, more inclusive ‘real world’ – one that our students can emulate when they leave us as adults. The Learning Challenge Curriculum, adopted by our Lower School, is an outstanding example of challenge done well. It is a way for pupils to engage with a topic and take their learning as far as they want to – it stretches every pupil as the
learning is led by the pupils themselves and everyone can excel in their own way. At Senior School the focus on nurturing and challenging each individual pupil continues. Academic support and extension work starts early, alongside well-attended extra-curricular sports, music and academic clubs. As well as A-level grades, universities are now looking for evidence to help them select candidates who will thrive at their institutions and develop into leaders in their field. It is with this in mind that we have developed our new Sixth Form Curriculum – The Queen’s School Baccalaureate, designed to support and challenge our pupils to become genuinely independent thinkers and learners. Alongside A-levels, pupils spend time on two MOOCs (massive open online courses), tailored to their specific areas of interest, and an Extended Project Qualification, enabling students to learn research and presentation skills while developing their depth of knowledge in an area of interest. This runs alongside an enrichment strand which includes slots for volunteering, team-building, physical activity and critical thinking in addition to the clubs and competitions which are, these days, considered the norm for any personal statement – Duke of Edinburgh, Combined Cadet Force, Model United Nations and similar. You only get one chance at giving your child the best start. Finding a school which enables its pupils to ‘enjoy the challenge’ is, in my view, fundamental to that. Joanne Keville is deputy head (curriculum) at The Queen's School, Chester (thequeensschool.co.uk)

Lady Barn House School pupil Harry Youell turned the tables on the big boss Mark Turner when he became headmaster for the day. Nine year old Harry, whose parents won the prize at the Cheadle independent school’s glamorous PTA Ball, at Mere Golf Club Resort and spa, definitely made the most of his day in charge. Harry declared the day a non-uniform day, added five extra and very precious minutes onto play time and all the children were served hot chocolate at lunch time. He thoroughly enjoyed handing out merit certificates to the teachers in assembly, as they duly lined up to have gold stickers pressed onto their lapels by Harry. “The children thought they deserved them and I agreed,” he graciously announced. Harry took to his role as Head with ease, but has his future sights set on becoming a sports journalist, and Mr Turner is looking forward to taking back the reins at the start of next term. Sport of Kings Kings in Chester recently unveiled plans for a new addition to the school – a new £4.5 million state-of-the-art sports centre. King’s has long since been recognised as producing outstanding sportsmen and women, and even some Olympians. The new sports centre will house a multipurpose studio for classes such as pilates, yoga, gymnastics, aerobics and a fully equipped fitness gym suite. Students, parents and visitors will be able to enjoy refreshments in the new deli café and watch matches from the outdoor viewing terrace. This fantastic project will provide easily accessible sports facilities with plenty of parking, and is sure to be appealing to community sports clubs and businesses. Kings School aims to complete the build by autumn 2018. (kingschester.co.uk)

Home & Garden News The very latest news, advice and trends from the world of interior design
Organic Chaos If you’ve ever visited Rick Owens’ concrete-clad London flagship, you’ll agree that the avant-garde designer’s furniture collection isn’t likely to be particularly mainstream. Publisher Rizzoli has released the first book to document his interior designs and give an insight into his creative vision. Rick Owens: Furniture, written by Owens himself, is an ode to his wife, muse and business partner Michèle Lamy, who he affectionately refers to as ‘hun’ throughout. While Owens conceives the stark, almost prehistoric pieces (made primarily from plywood, concrete, marble, leather, fur and antlers), Lamy is the one who helps make them into a desirable reality. £50, published by Rizzoli New York (rizzoliusa.com)

Nothing says cosy evenings in like the gentle flicker of candlelight, particularly when its accompanied by warm, soothing scents of Wild Fig, Winter Berries and Spiced Orange – dare we say we’re already feeling rather festive? Words of wisdom
“When you’re building a room, you’re building character, and character is the strength and wisdom of a home.” – Rose Tarlow, interior designer (rosetarlow.com)
A New Perspective A new independent estate agency, Rickitt Partnership, recently launched with a stunning high street location in the heart of Chester city centre. Headed up by Tim and Emma Rickitt, the agency offers a return to core values of professionalism, passion and integrity, all underpinned by a wealth of experience and in-depth local and industry knowledge. The agency launched with just short of 20 properties on its books – ranging from contemporary city apartments to Victorian townhouses and unique country properties – and, having already secured two sales since opening their doors, it seems that exciting times are ahead. “Emma and I wanted to create a quality agency that places proactive service at its heart,” explains Tim, who previously owned the successful Rickitt Grant agency before selling to Savills. “In short, we are committed to leading a great estate agency rather than focusing on volume and chasing market share.” (rickittpartnership.co.uk)
Winter Is Coming As the nights draw in, thoughts of curling up on the sofa by the fire abound – sinking into over-size feather-filled cushions, wrapped in the softest of throws, candles burning and a favourite book on your lap. And for all your AW17 hibernation must-haves, we highly recommend a trip to Neptune’s Wilmslow showroom, where you’ll find everything necessary to create your own cosy nest, plus – with the return of Neptune’s popular flower workshops – a whole host of gorgeous autumn designs for the table and winter wreaths for the door. The value of experience when selling your home W OR D S : C r i s pi n H a r r i s MR I CS
W
e’ve all been there – at home when potential purchasers view your property, getting involved in conversations about local schools, council services and good pubs. But is it better to put your trust in a knowledgeable local agent and are they really worth their weight in gold? We say yes! A good local agent is just that – local, and knows everything about your property, the local area and the local amenities. Choosing the right agent means you’ll be able to sit back, relax and count on them to steer the sale of your property to a successful conclusion. Does your agent have experienced staff? Does the director get involved at every stage or is your property sale being managed by a junior agent? Do they genuinely know all about the local area and have experience of using the services and schools? Are they savvy enough to record accurate feedback, and turn any criticism of your property into a positive and work on a solution? A good, local agent will do all of these things to aid the sale of your property.
Apples And Pears Local Warrington-based staircase business AbbottWade has scooped the prestigious honour of ‘the Best Small Business in the North West’ at the National Family Business Awards – and accepted the award at a glamorous ceremony held at London’s world-famous Wembley Stadium. Established in 1996 by close friends Craig Abbott and Mike Wade, the company has always taken pride in employing local tradesmen, treating their customers with respect, and working hard to build a solid reputation in the industry. Judging by this latest accolade, we’d say they’ve well and truly succeeded on all counts. (abbottwade.co.uk)

Gold Plated It’s more than likely you’ve been served dinner at an upmarket restaurant on J.L Coquet’s hemisphere crockery: a white porcelain collection that has a circular engraved pattern reminiscent of the rings on a tree trunk. The French heritage brand has now enlisted Achille Salvagni to put his own spin on its dinnerware, which he does by adding golden craters and what looks like a night sky sprinkled with stardust. interview
Life in
Design David Tragen, contemporary furniture designer and maker, Manchester
1. Something fabulously creative you made as a child. I had a lot of fun making a vase in pottery class at school. I decorated the surface with different shapes and textures and finished it with an array of coloured glazes. Having the freedom to express myself using texture and colour was exciting, something that I’ve returned to in the last couple of years.
2. Your proudest moment in your career to date. Having my favourite piece, Sidewinder, in a top Mayfair gallery amongst the works of leading
contemporary artists added to my confidence. This contributed to me becoming bolder and more adventurous in my designs.
3. The people who inspired you to pursue your current profession. When I lived in Italy during my university years my good friend Patrizia, an antiques restorer, encouraged me to draw and opened my eyes to the possibility of a career as an artist. Things took off when I moved to Barcelona in 1995, where another friend, John, introduced me to the joys of woodworking. Barcelona is such a creative city and inevitably Gaudi’s eccentric and striking architecture was also a catalyst. During these early years when I was experimenting with upcycling and starting to develop my own style, Gaudi’s work laid out a template of ‘anything goes’. By this time I started to hone in on making furniture and Catalan designer Jaume Tresserra’s work stood out. I managed to interview him for my design course project, by which time I was hooked on the idea of being a designer-maker.
4. Your go-to song for while you’re working. John and Mary by Jaco Pastorius is a favourite track. It’s uplifting and inspiring and its many textures and tempos translate into patterns and forms when I’m playing around with ideas in a sketch pad. My day-to-day music when I’m physically making something would be a DJ mix on Mixcloud and something up-tempo with jazzy, Latin rhythms and beats.
“I get a real buzz from dreaming up an idea 136

5. The last book you read. I’ve been dipping in and out of The Designer’s Dictionary of Colour by Sean Adams quite a lot lately.
6. Your idea of a perfect day off.
right: beating wings table; below: corona
Not rushing around, and having my phone on airplane mode would be a pre-requisite for a chilled day off. My partner and I both love Newborough Sands in Anglesey and most of the day would be taken up with a trip there. Cycling through the forest to the beach and then walking to the lighthouse with a picnic for lunch looking across the sea to Snowdonia – ah, bliss! Then we’d head back to Manchester and have dinner in Chorlton with friends and then stroll home to catch the highlights of a Man City victory on Match of the Day.
I get a real buzz from dreaming up an idea and then bringing it to life in a physical form. When I’m in the process of creating something new and exciting I have an extra spring in my step.
7. Three items you always take along when you travel.
9. The signature dish you cook for friends.
Sketch pad and pencil case (they are joined at the hip so I class them as one), an eye mask to guarantee a good night’s sleep and, inevitably, my phone.
Kedgeree is a favourite of mine, with plenty of extra smoked paprika and garlic.
8. The best thing about working in a creative industry.
10. The best piece of advice you’ve ever been given, and your personal motto. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was a pivotal book for me in my early 20s. Pirsig stresses the importance of keeping one’s mind open when approaching new challenges and this allowed me to overcome some of my own preconceived ideas when changing my trajectory after university. As a result I often remind myself to “keep an open mind” in many aspects of life, as it allows for a fuller and more enriching experience. (0161 928 5647; davidtragen.co.uk)

LACROIX, DARLING Kari Colmans speaks to Sacha Walckhoff, creative director at Christian Lacroix, about kissing his idol, his burgeoning art collection and the house’s latest lifestyle line
V
ivacious, vibrant and always va-va-voom: since it was founded as a couture house in 1987, Christian Lacroix has celebrated a ‘more is more’ raison d’être. Today the house continues to flourish under the charismatic leadership of
creative director Sacha Walckhoff. Adding a lifestyle string to the Lacroix bow, Walckhoff has teamed up with the likes of Designers Guild, Vista Alegre, Savoir Beds and Kartell to create colourful home décor
140
lines. The S/S17 Maison collection is no exception – it spans porcelain tableware, upholstery fabrics, wallpapers, luxury stationery and accessories, all underpinned by the brand’s signature flamboyant flair.
Homes and Interiors
I have been with Christian Lacroix for almost 25 years now. I worked with Christian for 18 of those, followed by seven years and counting as creative director. I am like a cat; I have had many lives!
Christian didn’t give me any sage advice when he left the brand, as he is not a sage spirit at all. That said, I am convinced that bad taste and good taste are two faces of the same coin, which might be a result of all those years spent observing him.
My own personal style is quite different from Lacroix. It is more restrained and less colourful, but there is a bit of humour to it, a tongue-incheek attitude. My look has a cosmopolitan background and is rooted in French style and elegance. I am good at mixing all those things together without losing who I am. clockwise from far left: l’insolite arlequin cushion; SACHA WALCKHOFF ©NEIL BICKNELL; AU THÉÂTRE CE SOIR COLLECTION, ALL ©RICHARD POWERS;
I realised at a young age that I wanted to be a designer. As a child, I was drawing all the time, so it seemed quite natural for me to choose an artistic path. I saw the film Funny Face on TV at the age of eight or nine and I knew instantly that I wanted my life to look like that movie… It has been even better.
Growing up, Grace Jones was my idol. She kissed me on the lips during a show in Berlin and I didn’t wash her lipstick off until the next day. A friend of mine, Jules Kim, founder of jewellery brand Bijules, actually made a gold cannon bit from a print of her lips. I saw her on TV the other night; she is still just as gorgeous, smart and rebellious at 68.

INTERIORS INSPIRATION
The fashion industry has evolved a lot, and not always in the right direction. It’s not as appealing and exclusive as it used to be; the boundaries between luxury and mass production, between great style and poor taste are blurred. There is less respect for creation and everyone is copying everybody else. The industry is becoming a caricature of itself; however, the work of designers such as Simon Jacquemus, Raf Simons and Demna Gvasalia is thrilling and gives me hope for a better future.
Lately, home décor collections are promoting new trends, which are then followed by the fashion designers. For instance, our 2012 butterfly prints inspired Valentino, Givenchy and even The Kooples a few seasons later.
I’m so excited about next year’s Maison collection because that’s what I’m working on right now,
but I was crazy about SS17 a few months ago! It was inspired by lavish theatre décor and brought back childhood memories of visiting Paris with my mother. I was living in Switzerland at the time and everything in the city seemed so chic by comparison.
I buy a lot of out-of-print books and visit exhibitions and galleries for inspiration. I travel and keep my eyes wide open all the time. I must say that working on fashion and lifestyle lines at the same time is very illuminating. Sometimes a bad idea for a garment might give you a great idea for a lifestyle product and vice versa.
I’m really into collecting contemporary art. My favourite

works at the moment are a resin and crystal headpiece by Canadian artist David Altmejd and a transparent glass decanter by david/nicolas, an amazing design duo from Beirut. I’m also in love with a gorgeous patched banner by New York multimedia artist Brian Kenny, and last, but not least, a bronze sculpture by Belgian genius Johan Creten. Ask me next month though, and you’ll get a different answer.

Grand tour tomette cushion, £121
I’m in London frequently, especially when working with Tricia Guild at the Designers Guild headquarters. I love to shop at Dover Street Market, followed by Rellik for amazing vintage pieces, Mallett & Son for antiques and Alfies Antique Market for surprises. One of my favourite boutiques is Stephen Sprake on Church Street in Marylebone – he stocks the most beautiful furniture. I spend a lot of time people watching when I’m here, too. The street style is much more exciting to look at than in Paris.

INTERVIEW
Under One’s Wing Homewings is revolutionising interior design. Penelope Warde speaks to its founder Cornelia De Ruiter
H
iring an interior designer was once the reserve of ultra high-net-worth individuals. Not any more, thanks to Cornelia De Ruiter, founder of Homewings. Her online company couples customers with interior designers who help the client’s interior fantasies become a reality. Instead of lengthy in-home consultations, Homewings provides clients with design advice, a sketched floorplan, moodboards and essentially a curated shopping list for their budget. Homewings can also do the shopping for you, at no additional cost.
What inspired you to create Homewings? CDR: Interior design has always been my passion but what always bugged me was the way the industry was positioned at such a high-end level. Particularly because a well-designed home can often benefit those with a small space the most. It’s kind of easy if you have a high budget to create something amazing; creativity really shines through with more modest budgets.
How would you describe your design style? CDR: There are two elements to this – there’s your personal style, what you want for your own home, but that’s not necessarily the same as the style

you’re comfortable designing . Either you have a designer who is good at a signature style, like Kelly Hoppen, who does contemporary chic with a glam hotel feel, or you can work in a lot of different styles dependent on the client. I think I’m one of the latter.
What’s the easiest way to transform a living space? CDR: Soft furnishings. A new rug or cushions can completely transform a room. I do that in my own home about once or twice a year. Also, paint. It’s so easy. Adding a statement wall or painting an entire room is so easy to do and, if you decide after a month you don’t like it, you can re-paint it.
Have you had any backlash from traditional interior design companies? CDR: No, we’ve had no backlash. What we’re doing is we’re tapping in to that segment of the market that isn’t catered for. Let’s not pretend we’re offering the full end-to-end traditional interior design service. What we offer at this price point is the ability for people to shop great stuff for their home more conveniently. We don’t provide extensive hand-holding
between clients and contractors – that’s not what we do.
What are the design trends of this year? CDR: The Scandi/hygge trend has been very popular, and working with brass never seems to go out of fashion.
What’s your favourite architecture style? CDR: I’m a sucker for mid-century design, so any Bauhaus-type buildings.
Describe your average weekend? CDR: My husband and I work very hard, and we have two little boys. So a weekend usually consists of a relaxed Saturday breakfast and then a warm lunch of good pasta and a nice bottle of wine. I always need to make sure I have ‘me’ time. The boys and husband will go and play football, and then I do some DIY projects at home: finishing a painting or customising a piece of furniture. I’m quite often covered in paint. The bubble bath comes after, obviously. (homewings.co.uk)

HOME
The property was constructed in 1910 by the Knollys family, with Viscount Knollys acting as private secretary to King Edward VII and his sister, Charlotte, as private secretary to Princess Alexandra, who often visited the house in the early 20th century. More recently the house was owned by Gary Kurtz, the producer of the original Star Wars film from 1977, who is rumoured to have thrown several decadent Hollywood parties at the property – making the most of the large swimming pool and expansive grounds. The floodlights from the tennis court are thought to have been taken by Kurtz from Pinewood, where they would have lit a film set. The house itself is the epitome of Edwardian charm – with wood panelling and large feature fireplaces. With 20 acres of grounds, the home is perfect for horsey types or would-be keepers of a small holding. On the market for £3,500,000 (pednorchase.co.uk)
