elcome to the height of summer and a magazine bursting with inspiration, ideas and escapism. And what better way to escape than Roald Dahl’s tale of the friendship between a gentle giant and little girl? Especially when the little girl is a charming rising star from Knutsford, who lets us into some secrets about Hollywood and Mr Spielberg (p.42). Remaining star struck, Lancashire’s Sir Ian McKellen also chats to us about playing Holmes and his preoccupation with Shakespeare (p.38), and we take a closer look at the world of celebrity wine (p.24) – asking, is it worth all the hype? Let us tempt you with party ideas and wedding plans, too – whether it’s a fabulous summer party or the wedding of the season, the experts are on hand to offer the very latest trends and advice on creating the perfect day (from p.48). Inspired by what we’ve learned, we’re trying to persuade our respective other halves to do it all over again – we’re not hopeful! We’ve a host of travel destinations to add to your lust list (p.108), four-wheels put through their paces (p.104) and some advice from been-there-done-that mums who offer advice on working with teachers (p.123) and balancing work with life (p.124). Last, but by no means least, are our packed Homes & Interiors pages, with everything from inspiring people (p.145) and inspiring gardens (p.156), to gorgeous places and products to help make your home your own. We’re also proud to be partnering with the Northern Design Awards to celebrate all the expertise in the north, but you can find out more on page 173. So sit back, relax, enjoy.

My life in CHESHIRE Daniel Davidson, owner of Love and Colour

H “Cheshire is a place of innovation where creative thinking is celebrated”

ave you ever spent countless hours squinting through hundreds of thumbnail photos on your computer, reminiscing about birthdays, anniversaries and holidays and wishing you’d done something more with these beautiful records of family life? Well you certainly wouldn’t be the only one. In fact, it was during one such nostalgic interlude that Daniel Davidson was struck by inspiration – to celebrate each of these wonderful images, and to do it in the most vibrant and colourful way possible. He began turning photographs into incredible specialist pieces of art, taking into account the emotions of each captured moment, and soon launched the project as a fully-fledged business: Love and Colour. “Despite Love and Colour being a very young creative company, it has had something of a growth spurt,” explains Daniel. “As family and friends viewed my work and asked if I could create a portrait for them, it dawned on me that I was not alone, and that we had become expert at capturing these moments, but perhaps neglectful at celebrating them. The name Love and Colour seemed to encapsulate everything: the love for those close to us, and the colour of our lives.” Having studied graphic arts at Blackburn College, Daniel subsequently landed a recording contract with Virgin Records, creating artwork for the music he was making and, eventually, for other artists too. This was followed by a period creating designs for We Admire, a London-based t-shirt company, as well as working with published authors. Nevertheless, it was the realisation that, after many years working to design briefs and time constraints, Love and Colour now offered Daniel the chance to be liberated from both of these things. “I love the whole process of working with a client’s treasured image and collaborating with them,” Daniel explains. “There’s a key stage when a client commissions Love and Colour to create an artwork; it’s called the colour consultation. The client digitally receives three complete colour options, then chooses which one works best considering the surrounding décor. Without exception, there’s an air of excitement and anticipation as they imagine the artwork hanging in their chosen space.” Having grown up in Blackburn, Lancashire, Daniel has always been close to Cheshire and, with many friends based there, he visits as often as he can. “I love Cheshire’s rich history and beautiful countryside,” he says. “However it doesn’t feel like a place that is weighed down by its history; for me it’s a place of innovation where creative and independent thinking is celebrated. My favourite place to eat is Luke’s Eating House & Gin Rickey’s – delicious, simple food in a relaxed atmosphere washed down with a tasty cocktail. For shopping, Becnicks Wonder Emporium always promises something unique, be it furniture, clothing, taxidermy – yes that’s right, taxidermy. It’s a fantastic place to pick up something unusual.” (loveandcolour.co.uk) 15

SILVER APPLE Congratulations to Cheshire’s Gardens of Distinction, who won three silver medals in the back-to-back show gardens this year at RHS Tatton Flower Show. The Adlington Hall garden won Silver Gilt and the Fryer’s Roses and National Trust’s Biddulph Grange gardens won silver. An Eye for Combermere was also awarded silver. Designed by head gardener, Phil Tatler, it was influenced by the walled Victorian gardens at the Abbey and their unique fruit tree maze. The focal point was a golden apple, designed and made by Peter Beckett, symbolically representing ‘The Apple of My Eye’. Knowing the exacting standards of the RHS these are amazing achievements. BRITAIN’S BEST The young chef team at Hilton Deansgate has been crowned as Britain’s Best Brigade for 2016, edging out seven other UK regions in Essential Cuisine’s nationwide search for the best. After initial judging each team was tasked with creating a video to capture what went on behind the kitchen walls and the Hilton’s focused on the Junior Chef Programme – a hotel scheme that allows youngsters who show promise in the kitchen to develop their culinary skills under the hotel’s top chefs. With masterclasses, day trips, food shows and 6am harbour-side starts alongside sumptuous dishes, the Hilton Deansgate team triumphed in the public vote and can now be known as Britain’s best. SPOTLIGHT ON... ROSSO, Manchester W ords : K E V I N E V A N S

osso is situated in a 118 year-old Grade II-listed building at the top of King Street. Famously owned by Rio Ferdinand, it has been open for seven years – no mean feat on the Manchester restaurant scene, which has seen much more “credible” chefs come and go. So why has it lasted the test of time? We arrived on a Thursday night, and I was expecting it to be relatively quiet. I was wrong: the place was packed and bustling with people waiting in the bar area for tables. We were met at reception quickly and efficiently, and whisked to our table ready for a glass of wine. The menu has recently changed, so I was keen to see what new seasonal dishes had been added. After an expert explanation of the menu and speciality dishes from our waiter, Andre, who was also well informed to on accompanying wines, we ordered. I opted for the pan roasted breast of pigeon in a prune and treacle jus, served on a bed of polenta gnocchi (£15) – this was amazing: so rich yet delicate at the same time, and the flavours were balanced perfectly. I was a little weary of the treacle as I thought it was a little gimmicky, but it worked beautifully. And the glass of Chianti (£5) complemented it perfectly. My colleague opted for the Gamberoni (£15) – plump and juicy king prawns poached in garlic, lime and sweet chilli butter, served with garlic crostone. The prawns were cooked to perfection and the sauce was a delicious, buttery load of goodness. Andre paired this with a glass of Pinot Grigio, Ardesia (£4.50) which cut through the richness. For main, I opted for the roasted monkfish wrapped in pancetta, served with vermouth and

grape beurre blanc, garnished with buttered curly kale (£26). This was a plate of joy. The meatiness of the monkfish and the saltiness of the pancetta were married perfectly with the rich sauce. I even managed to eat the kale, which is not a favourite of mine! This was matched with a Sauvignon Blanc, Ardesia (£4.50), which was crisp and full of gooseberry notes that worked well with the dish. My colleague opted for the pan-roasted duck breast and confit duck leg, served with sweet potato puree, wildflower honey jus and blackberries (£26). I must admit I had food envy when this came out! The duck was crisp, juicy and full of flavor and the jus was delicate, the blackberries bringing a much needed acidity to the dish. This was definitely the highlight of the night, perfectly paired with a Barolo, Flori (£8). We then had a much-needed rest to deliberate over dessert. I went for some cheese – a plate of Gorgonzola, Occeli and Capra, the latter two of which I had never tried. They were deliciously salty, the Occeli, an 18-month aged cheese similar in taste to a parmesan, and the Capra a delicious creamy goat’s cheese coated in an ash rind. This was paired with a glass of Alteatico red dessert wine (£6). My colleague opted for the Ricotta toffee cheesecake – a beautiful light cheesecake with a rich buttery toffee sauce and a Vino Santo (£8). We really felt quite indulged for a Thursday night and I can understand why this place is still so popular. A true measure of good service in a restaurant is when it is at its busiest, and Rosso passed this test with flying colours. rom Jude Law to Ben Stiller, the drinks industry has long attracted the attention of A-list stars keen to express support for their favourite tipple – in return for a hefty fee and a dose of well-placed exposure, of course. brands – Cîroc Vodka, for example, recently unveiled a limited-edition ‘Blue Steel’ product to mark the launch of the film Zoolander 2. Proof perhaps, that while sex can sell almost any brand, nothing excites corporate executives like the allure of celebrity endorsement. However, over the past decade we 

have witnessed a fundamental shift in how celebrities engage with drink brands, particularly in the wine industry. While A-listers still lend their names to a wide variety of products, an increasing number of celebrities are investing directly into winemaking, eager to oversee all aspects of production from blending to marketing. Over the last few years, a plethora of new celebrities has purchased wine estates and vineyards, with wine fast becoming the celebrity pet project of choice. The godfather of this burgeoning movement is – very appropriately – Francis Ford Coppola, who bought the Inglenook estate in Napa Valley, California, in 1975. Today, Inglenook’s wines are considered among California’s finest. Eighteen years later, actor Sam Neill invested in a vineyard in New Zealand, with the aim of producing a world-class Pinot Noir. Both critics and consumers agree that he has succeeded – his brand, Two Paddocks, is now held in high esteem worldwide. In recent years, Coppola and Neill have been joined by a growing firmament of Hollywood A-Listers with wine aspirations, including Drew Barrymore, Jay Z and most famously, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Jay Z made headlines when he purchased the iconic brand Armand de Brignac from Champagne house Cattier. Previously heavily

associated with the kitsch, metallic bottles of Armand de Brignac – Jay Z used them in several rap videos – he decided to go that extra mile and take full control of a brand he helped to make famous in 2014. The amount Jay Z paid for the brand was a closely guarded secret; however, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s purchase of the Coteaux Varois estate in Provence in 2008 was widely reported as costing the celebrity duo a ‘mere’ US$55m (£35m). Keen on producing their own Provençal rosé, they teamed up with the renowned winemaker Marc Perrin, owner of Château de Beaucastel in Châteauneufdu-Pape, for help with the production of their Miraval rosé. Yet, opting to keep their part in the branding relatively discreet, the only evidence of their involvement in the wine is a simple “Mis en bouteille par Jolie-Pitt & Perrin” etched in white on the back of the bottle. Of course, the media widely reported their connection with the brand, which has been phenomenally successful and is arguably partly responsible for the global resurgence in rosé sales. On release, the Château Miraval Rosé, priced at £18.95 a bottle, sold more than 6,000 bottles in the UK alone, all within five hours of the wine being advertised. But would the brand have sold in record time without the involvement of Hollywood’s favourite couple? It’s dubious. Sports personalities have also been displaying a keen interest in wine production in recent years, although a smaller number have made the lasting commitment of investing in a vineyard. Instead, fruitful collaborations with wine producers to make limited-edition brands have proved immensely popular; in 2010, golfing legend Jack Nicklaus announced a partnership with Terlato wines in the US, to create a range of Napa Valley wines. He joins an increasingly populous club of sportsmen who have branched out into wine, including fellow

golfers Sir Nick Faldo and Ernie Els – whose wine Ernie Els Signature is part of the Terlato brand portfolio. In addition, cricketers Sir Ian Botham and Bob Willis are avowed wine lovers; they make an Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, in conjunction with legendary Aussie winemaker Geoff Merrill. Then there’s Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the world’s most prolific wine collectors and connoisseurs. Indeed, the former Manchester United manager told Decanter magazine that he once said to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich that his London club’s wines were “paintstripper.” Amassing an impressive collection of rare vintages over the decades, Ferguson auctioned most of his collection in 2014; however, he is said to be looking to invest in a French

vineyard, so watch this space – his own range of Bordeaux wines could be hitting the UK market sooner than we think. While the success stories outweigh the failures, it’s equally true that celebrity endorsement isn’t always enough to make a brand famous. Just ask the diminutive rapper Lil Jon, whose inaugural Californian wine range flopped, badly. Leading Italian designer Roberto Cavalli also took a misstep in 2008, when he released his Cavalli Collection Tuscan wines, which were both a critical and financial disaster. In fact, the projects that have really worked are those that keep some measure of distance between celebrity owner and the brand’s marketing/ labelling, suggesting that perhaps the “Sir Alex Ferguson Merlot” isn’t such a stellar idea after all.

For Four Stratstone Ferrari, Wilmslow Clients, guests and local VIPs gathered at the newly refurbished Stratstone Ferrari showroom in Wilmslow to celebrate the launch of the new GTC4Lusso. Celebrity chef Nigel Smith created a bespoke Italian Ferrari-inspired menu, complete with 488 Tortellini and Maranello Cheesecake, which mixologist Emdad Hussain complemented with some high octane cocktails. Stratstone Ferrari has undergone a multimillion pound refurbishment, modelled on the Ferrari factory in Maranello, and includes a spectacular open terrace. It is the only official dealership in the north west and holds one of the largest collection of Ferraris in the UK. The newest of which is the new fourseater, hailed as a major evolution of the sporting Grand Tourer concept by integrating rear-wheel steering with four-wheel drive for the first time. The GTC4Lusso’s name refers to its illustrious predecessors, including the 330GT – one of Enzo Ferrari’s favourites – and the 250GT Berlinetta Lusso, which combines elegance, luxury and performance. The number 4 alludes to the car’s four comfortable seats, allowing clients the pleasure of driving a Ferrari anywhere, any time, alone or in the company of three lucky passengers! “We are delighted to welcome customers to our new showroom, which is at the forefront of cutting-edge design and innovation. The romance edition Melissa Porter talks marriage: what are your thoughts on this age-old union? Dickensian or desired?

I

was raised to believe I would bevome relevant as an adult, only post marriage. This was the story I subconsciously chose to believe and that my actions and behaviours were filtered via. My parents places less emphasis on my career ambitions or freedom value and continued to steer me diligently toward their opinion of the winning goal: marriage. In my early twenties, I married a lovely chap. Partly to frustrate my parents as my father was not enamoured by my choice and partly as my beau needed help with his visa. It rightly ended in a divorce several years later, but interestingly highlighted that the marriage stories I had lived with all my life, were never mine. They belonged to my parents. Who, by the way, generally disliked each other. The irony. I was making choices based on other people’s fear-filled stories. Likely why I chose to rebel. So, part of my work as a coach is to affect change in behaviour by replacing out of date, limiting beliefs no longer serving us with ones that do. Here goes:

My old dinosaur love/marriage stories:

Self worth: I am only relevant when in a relationship and married. Being single means there’s something wrong with me Financial security: Despite the fact I was financially secure and earned more than my then husband, men are a form of security and are the providers. Emotional stability: My soul mate will complete me What a load of twaddle. I wonder if any of the above three beliefs resonate with you either now or in your past? So fast-forward 15 years and a tonne of introspection work and

do I live like this now? NO! I have replaced my parents’ stories with new ones that work to serve my needs and me.

New stories

I will meet my life partner when I’ve first, learned to love myself and secong, when the universe considers it time for me to form a permanent union. Until then I know I’m busy living. I no longer place the pressure of providing onto the man, as I respect and am proud that I earn my own money. I will meet an equal. Not necessarily equal is earnings, looks or skills but our values and goals will be aligned. We will be committed to communicate and listen to each other in order to understand with compassion. These are my new beliefs/stories I chose to live by when I think about marriage. And, yes, I believe one day I will marry again. It’s unlikely it to be contained in a legal format but will be centred around a loving group intent to celebrate the union of two unique and separate minds and souls. The making of

McKellen Sir Ian McKellen is one of Britain’s most respected and gifted thespians, a man whose résumé warrants a lifetime of conversation. Yet, his current and ongoing preoccupation remains the plays of William Shakespeare. James Lawrence meets a giant of his generation

elaxing in his comfortable Docklands home, I wonder if Sir Ian McKellen can sense my unease. I keep silently ruminating about how one can possibly broach new territory with an actor that has been cross-examined by journalists countless times. So he challenges me to pursue an original line of questioning, following my admittance of guilt. “Out of interest then, what’s your favourite brand of clothing, say underwear for example – are thongs your forte, Ian?” is my riposte. “I don’t think I want to answer that, James,” says McKellen with his trademark wry smile. Give it ten seconds though, and he decides to take the bait: “My favourite type of underwear ultimately depends on the man wearing them, I’ll say that much.” A typically genial response from a man who is as celebrated for his humility and ongoing charity work, as he is for his remarkable work on stage and screen. McKellen has literally done it all – Macbeth, King Lear, The Simpsons, Have I Got News for You, The X-Men trilogy and, of course, Lord of The Rings. The latter trilogy saw McKellen commemorate his much-lauded performance as Gandalf with a shoulder tattoo of the Elvish number nine, written using Tolkien’s artificial script of

Tengwar. In recent years, he has fought and won a battle with prostate cancer – first diagnosed in 2006 – and played a cameo role in Coronation Street. He also owns a share in an excellent pub in East London called The Grapes, a Grade II-listed building in Limehouse. Celebrated for his roles in a string of highly successful blockbusters, McKellen nonetheless came relatively late to film, a fact one tends to forget among the (deserved) hype surrounding the actor. Indeed, he didn’t really achieve superstar status until The Fellowship of The Ring came to cinemas in 2001. He also remains highly committed to theatre work, though passing over the directorship of the National Theatre, much to everyone’s surprise. Today, McKellen is not in the mood to talk at length about his multifaceted career, or the benefits of owning a local watering hole. Technology is on his mind, specifically a new iOS app he helped to create called ‘Heuristic Shakespeare - The Tempest’. Produced in collaboration with renowned director Richard Loncraine, the app offers users scrolling text of the full version of the play, supported by video footage of each member of the cast reading their lines – or in other words, a portable performance of The Tempest. It is the first in a series of 37 individual apps that will cover all of 

Shakespeare’s plays, from Macbeth to Romeo and Juliet. “Reading the script of any play is a problem, even for seasoned actors like me,” admits McKellen, when questioned about his interest in this latest piece of digital wizardry. “Shakespeare in particular continues to give actors headaches – approaching a Shakespeare play for the first time without any guidance is like trying to teach music to children by simply giving them a series of notes on a sheet. Just having the language isn’t enough, you need the tools to help you understand it. “So I decided to get involved as I want to inspire children – and teachers – to embrace Shakespeare in all its glory. I only wish this technology had been around when I was their age – I remember that Shakespeare bored most of my school friends to tears.” McKellen’s unquenchable passion for Shakespeare is quite remarkable, particularly as the actor has been required to immerse himself in these complex and demanding plays for many decades. Indeed, William Shakespeare has been McKellen’s constant companion since his childhood. “My sister took me to an amateur production of Twelfth Night at Wigan’s Little Theatre when I was eight years old; from then on I was hooked,” he says. “After that, I begged her continuously to take me to different

productions.” Despite such impressive devotion, I enquire as to whether McKellen has lost any passion for acting in a wider sense? “Not one bit,” comes the immediate reply. “I’m still learning, refining my craft and getting better. In fact, I still have plenty to learn, despite my age.” Born in Burnley, Lancashire, McKellen’s father was a civil engineer and lay preacher descent of Protestant, who died when he was 24. His mother sadly didn’t even witness McKellen’s journey beyond childhood, dying when the actor was just 12. Yet, of his childhood, McKellen paints a generally happy picture, albeit his teenage years were conversely fraught with his struggle to accept his homosexuality. “My time at Cambridge helped my selfconfidence enormously, but I don’t think I really started to feel truly comfortable until the first time I fell in love in the 1960s. After that, I started to relax and enjoy myself.” His longterm relationship with former boyfriend, director Sean Mathias, evolved into a professional collaboration long ago, and they continue to run The Grapes in partnership with Evgeny Lebedev. Conveniently for McKellen, The Grapes is situated within staggering distance of his very imposing five-storey Victorian townhouse. “The area has changed a great deal since the ’80s when I first moved in,” he observes. “It used to be far more industrial and ‘alive’ in a sense, although the past decade has seen a tremendous amount of development. But, living here means I can enjoy daily views of the river, something that’s impossible in the West End. More to the point, I could never afford a house in Zone 1, even if I wanted to live there.”

“In some ways acting is a wretched profession, James, underpaid on the whole and there simply isn’t enough work”

above: Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes © Giles Keyte; centre: Ian McKellen in X-Men: The Last Stand © 20th Century Fox

But if you want to get McKellen really energised, then simply mention his ongoing activism, a subject which seemingly arouses more excitement from the veteran actor than his distinguished career. He was a co-founder of Stonewall, is a current patron of Pride London, and among his many achievements told Michael Howard to “Fu*k off”, regarding the then environmental secretary’s support of Section 28. McKellen came out in 1988 during a BBC Radio interview with former Sunday Telegraph editor Sir Peregrine Worsthorne, although he has since admitted that he “regrets leaving it so late.” “The reactions to my coming out on radio were, as you’d expect, decidedly mixed,” says McKellen simply. “Some people were very supportive but there was also the abuse and death threats following the interview.” Among McKellen’s less enthusiastic fans was the former Bishop of Glasgow, who described him as: “The Son of the Devil”. I ask him if he has ever regretted his decision to come out? “Never, James – moreover I didn’t really get upset, because I knew I was right – the only antidote to prejudice is to simply be yourself, as prejudice grows out of ignorance,” he replies, candidly. Indeed, as friends of McKellen will testify, the actor is blessed with an extremely thick skin and robust constitution. He observes wryly that: “Actors spend their life being criticised by

directors, it’s a fact of life. I don’t take criticism personally.” But as a journalist and critic I’m curious if McKellen reads reviews and takes to heart the less favourable ones. To this he says: “Believe it or not, I have a reasonable amount of empathy with the press; in my younger years, I seriously considered a career as a journalist. And so when critics slate releases, I sometimes find myself agreeing with them; I’ve paid to see some terrible films, like everyone. “The only problem with journalists criticising films is that it’s too late to change anything, although if people criticise my work in a theatre production, for example, I will listen to their concerns.” Time passes all too quickly during our conversation, but I quickly snatch a final question before his publicist wraps things up – which other actor or actors does he particularly admire? “I admire anyone who makes it in this game,” he says. “In some ways acting is a wretched profession, James, underpaid on the whole and there simply isn’t enough work. It’s a tough life.” But if it’s so dreadful Ian, why do you continue to resist the allure of retirement? After all, McKellen turns 77 this year and has already organised the finer details of his own memorial service, to take place in a theatre, of course. So the remark can’t be allowed to slip by. “I’m just planning ahead but I have no desire to retire from acting,” he replies, with that trademark smile. “In fact, nothing would stop me from working, save for a serious medical issue. I love my craft too much. But look, even if I lose my legs, I can still do radio. So all would not be lost.” Heuristic Shakespeare – The Tempest app is available to purchase through the Apple app store for £4.49

Natalie Anglesey steals some time with the stars of this summer’s hit film, The BFG, not least the star of the show and Cheshire’s own Ruby Barnhill

43

I

t’s unlikely to have escaped your notice that The BFG is already one of the landmark films for children this year. And it’s not an animation! Directed and produced by Oscar-winning Steven Spielberg, its screenplay was written by Melissa Mathison, who also wrote ET, and is based on the best-selling children’s book of the same name by Roald Dahl. The film stars award-winning actor Mark Rylance as the lovable Big Friendly Giant and 12 year-old Ruby Barnhill, who was born in Knutsford and attends Lower Peover Primary School, in the central role of Sophie. Ruby, who lives in Cheshire with her parents, Paul and Sarah, her seven year old younger sister Darcy and Tom the cat, is a member of her local youth theatre. Her father, Paul, is an actor who has performed at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, with the RSC and in various television soaps. Ruby is delighted he has a cameo as a footman in the film. “Although all my friends kept telling me to read The BFG because I’d enjoy it,” Ruby

recollects, “I must admit it was only when I decided to audition for the role of Sophie that my dad suggested I’d better read the book – and I’m so glad I did.” In November 2014 Ruby, who was only ten at the time and a student of Lower Peover School, auditioned for the film. She had to learn six pages of dialogue in preparation and, after a lengthy search, on December 16, she was finally cast in the role of Sophie, the young orphan. “I feel incredibly lucky and I’m so happy,” was her excited response. Legendary film director Steven Spielberg said he’d “hit the jackpot” when he found Ruby. “I felt what I call the tingle factor. I felt it with Mark Rylance on the first day of filming Bridge of Spies, when I knew he’d be great as the BFG. I also felt it with Ruby after her very first audition when she asked clever questions and came up with ideas to develop her character. I feel Roald Dahl himself would have found Ruby every bit as marvellous as we do. We have discovered a wonderful Sophie in Ruby Barnhill.”

“I first read The BFG aloud to my own children although I’d no idea at the time of making a movie about it. I read it simply to gain popularity with my family” - Steven Spielberg

44

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

At her audition Ruby admitted: “Steven came in and I was literally shaking. I was like ‘Oh my goodness’. But after the first five minutes, I just felt really, really comfortable straight away. Steven is such a wonderful director and I feel honoured to work with him. Sophie gets to go on this wonderful adventure and I’m so excited that I get to play her.” What was the best advice she received from the Oscar-winning film-director, famous for ET, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the Indiana Jones series? Ruby doesn’t hesitate. “The best advice from Steven was concentration. I was so excited about filming all the time, but he told me to just calm down and concentrate on my character and what was happening in the scene before the

camera started filming.” Mark Rylance, who recently made a big impression as Cromwell in Wolf Hall, opposite Damien Lewis’s Henry VIII, couldn’t resist adding: “That advice works for me, too. Ruby demonstrated every day what I always try to show – and that’s the joy of acting!” The BFG is the first Disney-branded film directed by Spielberg, although he’s previously produced several films for the studio. “I first read The BFG aloud to my own children, although I’d no idea at the time of making a movie about it. I read it simply to gain popularity with my family. The book has enchanted families and their children for more than three decades, and we are honoured that the Roald Dahl estate has entrusted us with this classic story.” Luke Kelly, Roald Dahl’s grandson and managing director of the Roald Dahl Literary Estate, remarked: “The character of Sophie is 

one of the most endearing young heroes in Roald Dahl’s stories. She is as brave as she is curious, and has an innate sense of wonder. Many congratulations to Ruby on landing the role. We hope that making The BFG proved an utterly magical adventure for her.” In the story, an orphan human girl befriends a benevolent giant, the BFG, who has amusing problems with vocabulary. They unite along with the Queen, played by Downton Abbey’s Penelope Wilton, against the terrible giants who are kidnapping children. Published in 1982, and now available in 39 languages, it’s said to have been one of Dahl’s own favourites. In early drafts,

Sophie was actually a boy called Jody. Following the birth of his grand-daughter, Dahl changed Jody into Sophie, who became one of the most resourceful heroines in all his children’s books. An excited Ruby and her family were present at The BFG premieres at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and the London premiere – in the same year as Dahl’s own centennial. Also at Ruby and her family’s request, a special red-carpet premiere event was attended by Ruby and several co-stars, giant included, and held at The Curzon cinema, Knutsford to raise money for the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust. The BFG is Ruby’s first feature film role. She shared her birthday with her family and Steven’s family and swam in his pool in Santa Monica. “I think of Steven as just a lovely, kind person.” Ruby’s now been acting for two years and will appear in the forthcoming BBC BAFTA award-winning children’s drama Four O’Clock Club. In The BFG film, much is talked about of Sophie’s dream. No doubt Ruby’s dream is that Spielberg will take up the rumoured three picture option on her contract so they can make more movie magic together! The BFG is at cinemas now.

 The Food When it comes to ‘once in a lifetime’ celebrations, couples are re-writing the rule book; shunning predictable expectations of a traditional wedding day in favour of creating unexpected, memorable moments. From exciting food combinations to a little live theatre with presentation, it’s all in the detail. Horseradish, one of Cheshire’s outside catering gems has seen a significant rise in the demand for alternative banqueting in addition to the typical sit-down meal. Max Gnoyke, consultant chef at Horseradish Catering, explains the shift in trends: “For a

long time, caterers have dictated their menus. The tables have turned, and the expectation from clients is to work together to deliver their vision, crafting delicious dishes accompanied by memorable service and presentation. With us, no idea from a bride or groom is ever ruled out. We’ve loved working with some fantastically creative people to collaboratively deliver a really indulgent catering experience for guests, from buffet-style wedding breakfasts and crêpe stations, to Bloody Mary bars, hog roasts and seaside-style fish and chips.” The devil really is in the details when it comes to super stylised conceptual execution, which is why Horseradish also offers event stylist services. Angus Wilson, head of catering for Horseradish, explains: “Clients are no longer choosing us solely based on the food that we produce, but the presentation and theatre too. Whether it’s a wedding, an intimate dinner in somebody’s home or entertaining two hundred guests in a garden setting, every occasion should be unforgettable.” (01244 306 660; horseradish-hospitality.com)

“The expectation from clients is to work together to deliver their vision”  THE DRESS For many a bride, it’s all about the dress. Esteemed bridal designer Stephanie Allin gives her advice on choosing the perfect gown for your big day. “When you start looking for your wedding dress, try to limit the number you try on, as there’s so much choice and it’s easy to become confused. Social media bombards us with options and can actually make it harder to make a decision – what should be a wonderful experience can actually become quite stressful. “Do use social media to help narrow down your selection, but then of course the only way to choose your dress is to try some on. Do remember, though, that models have often been airbrushed – the reality only comes to life when you see yourself in the dress!

50

It’s always a good idea to use your fittings to try out different hair and make-up – and remember to take your shoes. Also, don’t involve the whole bridal party in your choice – too many opinions can be hard to handle! If you’re dressing for someone else’s wedding, remember the day can be long, so wear comfortable shoes and never upstage the bride by wearing anything that remotely resembles a wedding gown or anything too revealing. Animal print, plain white or neon is also a big NO – remember, it’s not your day! If you are able to find out your bride’s colour scheme, try to stay far away from it. Think classic rather than showgirl.” (stephanieallin.net)

 The Venue “When it comes to finding the perfect venue for an event, you’re certainly spoilt for choice in Cheshire and Manchester,” says Kate Park of Kate Park Events. “With new venues coming up every year, there’s always enough choice to make clients’ visions a reality. Plus, it’s what we do every day of the year, so we may be able to come up with something you’ve not heard of or know about yet. “Picking the perfect venue all depends on the number of guests, locality and style you want. Whether it’s a lavish affair for 400 guests, or a small intimate dinner for 20, the venue is the starting point, but it’s what you create with décor and entertainment that counts! “We thrive on creating an event that is outside the box. A Plan B (that’s as exciting as Plan A!) must always be in place at a venue with beautiful gardens, to avoid disappointment on the day. “The new trend for wedding venues can vary from the urban Victoria Warehouse, to city centre venues like the newly refurbished Lowry Hotel. The latest boutique venue in the city centre is King Street Townhouse, which can host intimate dinners and larger events. Marquees are still a favourite at home, and can be erected to incorporate garden features and build mezzanine levels to create a wow factor! “When it comes to a summer party, if you don’t want to host it at your home, then there are many venues with terrace areas, so come rain or shine the weather can’t ruin the party!

James Billington, of CitiBlooms, dresses venues and hotels for a living. We ask what the latest trends in floral design are. “It all depends on what our clients want and how far a theme can be developed, but in many venues we embrace the whole experience with flowers to enhance the building or marquee. For us, venues are a canvas to work from, softening areas with harsh lines or introducing unique colours to bring the venue to life. “If we are working with a venue which has character or history, we will

“Every bride is different and some surprise us with weird and wonderful ideas” bring elements of that into the proposal with traditional flowers, but done to suit the clients tastes. Every bride is different, and some surprise us with weird and wonderful ideas. “Floral canopies which drape across the room and over the guest tables are really trending at the moment. This is certainly a wow factor in any venue. Whatever the theme, the very best part is seeing the client and the family react with true emotion. It is something I will always enjoy.” (0161 905 2052; 07718456054; kateparkevents.co.uk)

 Tailoring Often playing second fiddle to the wedding dress, it would be remiss of us not to mention the importance of a well-fitting suit. We ask the experts at Savile Row tailors, Gieves & Hawkes, for their advice. “Your wedding is not a time to be too experimental with your style. Invest in new shoes (but be sure to wear them a few times to break them in and rough the soles), underpinnings and accessories so that you feel fresh and ready to be the centre of attention. “An oft-washed, slightly greying white shirt is an absolute no-no. But ensure you have worn and washed it at least once in advance of the big day, and consider having a back-up duplicate in case of unnoticed shaving cuts, spillages or excessive perspiration. “Finally, be wary of wedding trends. download, or even spreadsheets you create, are you ever fully prepared for your big day? Kimberley Avery, events and conference supervisor at The Mere Resort and Spa, shares some tips from her career. “I’ve been involved in events of some shape or form all my working life and, believe me, I’ve seen it all. But the very best piece of advice I can offer the happy couple on their big day is to enjoy it! It seems a silly thing to say, but it’s so easy to do. There’s been months, if not years, of planning; every detail has been checked and doublechecked, now is the time to savour every moment. It will be over before you know it. “We’ve catered for all types and denominations of wedding, and even had brides and grooms arriving by helicopter – but the best part is when the happy couple hands everything over to us the day before and can go and relax. “Staying organised is important too – I think that would be the second most important piece of advice I could give. Keep to the deadlines all the way through and, even though you may be panicking as the event gets closer, if you’ve done your planning and kept to those deadlines, everything will be utterly amazing. Enjoy the day and remember every part of it.” (The Mere Resort & Spa, 01565 830155; themereresort.co.uk)

A night to

REMEMBER

Weddings are full of tradition. Liz Taylor discusses the current trends which can help you make the most of these timeless customs

O

ver the last 21 years at the helm of TLC I have been lucky enough to have been involved in some of the most amazing events, weddings and celebrations. I have dined with HRH The Prince of Wales, attended the Queen’s Garden Party (thank you Philip Treacy!) and been to Robbie and Ayda’s private Thanksgiving dinner (fourteen around the table and the only one who couldn’t sing) to name just a few fond memories. But, behind every successful event there is a team of passionate, creative people. There needs to be a driving force to inspire and motivate suppliers to bring the theatre and drama of our weddings and parties to life. However, I am realistic enough to know that I am only ever as good as my last event, so pushing back the boundaries of what is possible and largely impossible, and looking for what is about to become the next big thing, is my mantra. I live by the belief that entertainment is key! One thing that never truly alters but does vary with the current trends, is tradition! And wedding days are filled with these. Gone is the one band DJ with traffic light installations. When it comes to how you entertain the guests, the options are ridiculously endless. We are awash with highly talented musicians and vocalists, products of classical training but with an edge of their own. Combining talents to

56

form string quartets of gorgeous ladies playing pop classics, contemporary barber shop trios, violin masters to operatic unknowns – I have seen it all. Shift up a gear for the reception, with a continental style party band that can command the tempo of the party, and fill the dance floor. More expensive – of course. But they are an act that will take you from your heels to your flip flops throughout a whole night, and send Twitter into overdrive! Hip New York or European DJ acts that deliver a high energy show, complete with dancers, and drawing inspiration from the genres of music making the headlines today! Remixes of old favourites, R&B to the clubs of Ibiza. The sound is in da House! Tradition manifests itself in old favourites too. The magician, illusionist, caricaturist, mimic – whatever floats your boat and adds to the sense of fun. Bespoke three-dimensional photo

booths, Big Brother-style videography and, of course, Tom Cruise inspired cocktail barmen throwing flames into the air! Want to join me? Don’t forget the children. They expect their own area and keeping them occupied makes for a better day for all. Kids’ entertainers providing graffiti walls on which younger guests can paint unique pieces of art. Casino tables for trying your luck, or losing your shirt! Sweet carts, craft corners, silent disco… Choose carefully and you may forget they are even there. Wedding couples are focusing on entertainment and allocating significant pots of their budget into getting the best entertainment. We often combine the wedding breakfast and evening reception into one amazing party, and if guests are invited later, meticulous timing and careful planning seamlessly immerse them in the party. I travel the world securing first-class talent and spend many hours auditioning and finding UK based bands and artists who need a break. And I never, ever book anyone to perform at any event without seeing them first. Potential disaster!

I love the early mornings and late nights. Only ever wear flat shoes. Treat every event as my first. I rely on my instincts and, when I am nervous, I know it’s going to be a great night, as it means I am totally ‘on the ball’. (tlc-ltd.co.uk)

or bride Sara-Lou it all began in Portugal on a romantic break away. “It was a Friday night and we both got dressed up to go to a boutique restaurant the hotel we were staying at recommended. After dinner, Scott held my hand across the table and I could feel him pushing something into it. I looked down and there was this beautiful engagement ring. I put it on immediately and was ecstatic. The first thing I did was ring my mother to tell her. Scott then turned to me and said ‘Is that a yes then? Is it a yes?’ “We wanted to get married straight away, so we only had six months between setting the date and getting married. We didn’t have time to mess about over things! I had an idea of what I wanted with vintage pinks, ivory and champagne colours leading the way, and we just went with it. “I had six bridesmaids in total so I wanted something they felt comfortable in. The twist and wrap style dresses for the older ones so they could wear it as suited and the two little ones had ivory dresses and a sash in the same material as

the twist and wrap dresses, stitched around the waist. The boys were in full morning suits. I like the traditional look. “The day was just wonderful. It was basically my perfect day, even down to the horse and carriage. Stepping out of the hotel to a huge crowd around us was possibly the highlight, then we rode as man and wife to Chester Cathedral for photographs. (chestergrosvenor.com) 

eorgina Irlam is an event planner at Colshaw Hall who is always on the lookout for new trends and inspiration. “I wanted our wedding to be a twist on the traditional that appealed to all generations of my large family and all our friends. Our theme was English Country Garden which was reflected across everything from the invitations to food and decor. “We recreated a cottage garden that was suspended from the roof of the marquee. Not only did it look amazing, but the smell of the flowers was incredible too. It was also the perfect theme for my favourite colours which are lime and purple – you can see this colour palette make an appearance all the way through!” Georgina met Elliot at work (Elliot heads up Colshaw Hall Fitness) two and a half years ago and knew straight away he was the one. “We really clicked on our first date and we’ve been together nearly every day since. He is my best friend and a real gentleman. He was so nervous when he asked my dad for my hand in marriage, but after his blessing it was all systems go. “Colshaw Hall is my family home so it was the obvious choice for us, not only because we had lived there

for 14 years but also because my brother, James and sister, Lucy were married here too. Besides, being an event planner, I wanted to demonstrate my skills and put on an event to remember. “It’s exclusive use, so you get 300 acres to yourself, the Hall itself is a Grade II-listed manor house, so it’s perfect for photos, and you can stay after your wedding. It’s also in the stunning Cheshire countryside – what more could you ask for? “I did have to stop being the event planner, though and concentrate on being the bride. We

“It was a moment of complete happiness, excitement and joy and I’ll never forget it” have a great team, which really helped to pull the wedding together – everyone had different ideas to contribute. Our suppliers know me really well too; they can almost second guess me, which made it a lot easier. “I knew that I was in safe hands so was relaxed, happy and enjoyed every moment. It’s really difficult to choose just one favourite moment, but perhaps when we were called in to dine. We walked in to The Greatest Day by Take That and the reception we got was unbelievable. “Normally the bride and groom walk in and their entrance is accompanied by clapping, and people take their seats. But our friends

and family continued to cheer and clap and then got out of their seats to dance until the end of the song. Our toastmaster, Ian, said he’d never witnessed this at a wedding before. It was a moment of complete happiness, excitement and joy and I’ll never forget it. “I’m often asked what advice I would give brides-to-be. My answer is always, ‘Enjoy your day and don’t let anything spoil it’. You can’t control the weather so if it rains (I got torrential rain!) then smile and make the most of it. Everyone is there for you. “Also, the better you plan, the more chance your vision will become a reality. Trust the advice of the wedding professionals too – they’ve done it before so can tell you what works and what doesn’t. A Whole Lot of Attitude Recent years have seen a fusion of techniques adopted by street artists, driven by collectors’ desire for mixed styles. One street artist helping to blur these lines is self-taught Pegasus, who produces uber-collectable works that say something as well as being aesthetically delightful, with a strong A-list following from the likes of Johnny Depp, Lindsay Lohan and Simon Cowell. Combining more than ten colour layers in a single piece before embellishing his work with diamond dust, glitter, resin and colourful acrylics to bring a piece to life, his latest collection of works, ‘Gods and Monsters’, is about to embark on a global tour, coming to Cheshire’s very own Attitude Gallery in December. #3 A rare letter from Charles Dickens to Wilkie Collins In 1860, Charles Dickens famously burnt hundreds of letters from his family and friends – destroying a valuable capsule of British history. Thankfully, most of his addressees carefully preserved their correspondence with him, allowing us some insight into the author’s fascinating mind. This letter written by Dickens in December 1857 is addressed to Wilkie Collins and invites him to a get-together with William Russell Howard and John Thadeus Delane; curiously insisting that it will be “very quiet and no party”. The Great Race

Pure Imagination

Straight from the Versace SS16 catwalk comes an iconic new style – V-Race, a chronograph with the attitude and energy of Versace today, matching the contemporary design with the tradition of watchmaking. The watch has an IP yellow gold case with an interchangeable top ring, the crown embossed with the Medusa. It comes with either an IP yellow gold bracelet, or straps to match the urban jungle prints that defined the Spring/Summer 16 show. The Swiss-made movement displays the chronograph hours and minutes in the same counter at 6 o’clock on the dial, with the big date indicator at 12 o’clock. Available in Versace Boutiques in IP yellow gold, all-black, all-blue, all-bronze and bi-colour, £1,460

‘If you can imagine it, we can make it’ – this is the ethos of luxury watch brand George Bamford, renowned for their watches’ uncompromising style and quality. Established ten years ago, it is based around the personalisation of various iconic sports watches from some of the major brands in the watch world, including Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Tag Heuer – and now, the brand has launched four exclusive styles for the Selfridges Manchester Exchange Square store, each beautifully crafted with the greatest of care to ensure you find a watch you love. Prices from £17,500, 1, Exchange Square Central, High St, Manchester M3 1BD (selfridges.com)

Heart of Gold The incredible new Cuore Ferragamo is the perfect gift to mark an anniversary or special occasion, with a stunning dial decorated with a gold IP, steel or red enamel heart, which “beats” once a second as its two halves separate and then reunite. The secret is an innovative quartz movement, designed and manufactured exclusively for Salvatore Ferragamo. Pressing the crown starts the function, while the time is set with a button at 2 o’clock using a special heart-shaped tool. The watch is available with a bi-colour bracelet or a crocodile print calfskin strap in yellow, black, red, purple, pink and grey. Available at Salvatore Ferragamo boutiques, from authorised retailers or at ferragamotimepieces.com, £1,890

ONE TO WATCH “Tudor’s Heritage Black Bay family has grown with the arrival of the new Heritage Black Bay Bronze, a 43mm divers’ watch fitted with a mechanical movement that was developed and produced in-house.” -Lee Chadwick, showroom manager at David M Robinson, Manchester Heritage Black Bay, £2,730, Tudor. Available at David M Robinson in Manchester (davidmrobinson.co.uk) 79

What does your

watch say about you, Sir? Although the brand of watch a gentleman wears says a great deal about his character, personal taste remains the most important deciding factor. The specialists at David M Robinson share their expertise

TAG Heuer

Raymond Weil

Cartier

Spending much of their lives in pursuit of the next adrenaline high, TAG Heuer wearers brim with enthusiasm and enjoy testing life’s limits, adhering to TAG’s slogan: ‘Don’t Crack Under Pressure’. Often motor racing and extreme / winter sports fanatics, fans of the brand past and present include ‘King of Cool’ Steve McQueen, who wore a TAG Heuer Monaco Chronograph, and Cara Delevingne.

Founded in 1976 and positioned as the music-lover of the Swiss watchmakers, Raymond Weil creates striking, sturdy and stylish timepieces that are wellrespected in the industry. As such, its customers are refined, practical, upstanding members of society who like to be independent and are loyal one-brand men (and women). Alongside their Raymond Weil, their record collection is their most prized possession.

Anyone with more than one watch to their name may well be in possession of a classic Cartier timepiece, as popular with men as with women. This is due to the brand’s stellar track record in creating iconic designs that look as fantastic in the office as at an evening event. Ostentatious gimmicks are not part of Cartier’s repertoire; appreciate its refinement, elegance and quality.

Rolex

4 5 6

The man who wears a Rolex is safe in the knowledge that it will serve him brilliantly for many decades to come. Often high achievers who make sound, low-risk investments, Rolex owners have traditional tastes, but expect their timepiece of choice to look as good with their sharp suit as it does with their off-duty swimwear.

Patek Philippe

OMEGA

Gentlemen who sport a Patek Philippe – which produces some of the most complicated watches in the world – have a tendency to be true horology enthusiasts and consummate professionals. Typically connoisseurs, whether of old-world wine and classic cars or modern art and leather goods, they bring sparkling conversation to a dinner party, while maintaining an air of sophistication at all times.

Two names: Buzz Aldrin and James Bond. The former wore an Omega Speedmaster during the first lunar landings in 1969 and this model remains the choice of the fictional British spy, immortalised on screen. Omega buyers, like the watches, are understated, practical, somewhat of a style icon and often more complex than they first seem.

“Have you ever wondered what your choice of watch might say about you?”

7

8

Panerai

IWC Schaffhausen

The original supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Navy, Panerai then developed its watches to meet the requirements of WWII commando frogmen. Today’s Panerai wearers are creative, fashion-conscious, modernist fans, captivated by the watches’ robust construction and incredibly cool dial typeface. You may find your wife wants to borrow it; women are increasingly drawn to these masculine, oversized models.

IWC was founded by an American in 1868 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland and its diverse portfolio is testimony to these international roots. Aesthetes adore the elegant Portofino family, explorers gravitate towards the Aquatimer, and the sizeable, purist Portugieser is for those who believe bigger is better. The IWC wearer inevitably enjoys travel; jet-setting Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper has been seen sporting an IWC.

ummer may have escaped London this year, but across the Channel its spirit hasn’t been lost. This August, French jeweller Chaumet refreshes three classic collections – Liens, Hortensia and Joséphine – with wearable pieces to help women breeze through the summer months looking effortlessly chic. In Liens, the sea’s vivid hues have been represented in lapis lazuli, turquoise and mother-of-pearl, set within miniature versions of the house’s iconic X motif, while the Hortensia Aube Rosée collection is for the more feminine among you. Empress Joséphine’s passion for flowers has been brought to life in this delicate range featuring pink sapphires, opals and rose gold. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Amsterdam Sauer’s first Diamonds International Award win, honouring the Constellation ring. To celebrate its jubilee, the original gold cylinder design has been transformed into a collection of rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. “We are all looking at space,” explains creative director Stephanie Wenk. “There are new revolutions in astrophysics, discoveries of stars, a reshaping of the universe. In a way, this excitement is a lot like the space race times in the 1960s when the Constellation ring was created. This collection makes women shine even brighter.” (amsterdamsauer.com)

We are besotted with Annie’s most famous range, the My Guardian Angel collection, which includes such beautiful pieces as the Sama My Guardian Angel Silver Charm Bracelet (£225), a 5-strand sterling silver hand-beaded bracelet, with a lucky ‘Four-Heart Clover’ and ‘Open Heart’ charm. A perfect gift for a treasured friend. (anniehaakdesigns.co.uk) 84

A Walk on the Wild Side With whizzing off into the countryside on a Friday night for a weekend of simple pleasures still the perfect antidote to a week’s work in the city, you must always be sure to look the part. With preparation for grouse season well under way, high-end equipment and country clothing company Farlows has launched its AW16 Fieldwood Collection, a range of what the brand’s shooting manager Will Hogan describes as “traditional garb in keeping with British etiquette, but combined with cutting-edge technical performance and protection from the elements”. A Thing Of Beauty It’s always nice to give back, and that’s why McArthurGlen employees have been giving up their free time to transform a courtyard garden at the well-known Ellesmere Port Hospital. Since the end of last year, once a month a group from the designer outlet arrives at the hospital to spruce up the garden as a pleasant environment for patients to enjoy – complete with potted plants, park benches and a multi-coloured mosaic – and, so far, patients and visiting relatives alike have been overjoyed with the results.

Beauty news REVIEW OF THE MONTH

Maison Caulières at Sense Spa, Rosewood London Words: Gemma Knight

It’s the beauty brand which the Queen likes to stock up on every couple of months – and, if Maison Caulières is good enough for Her Majesty, it’s certainly good enough for me. The family-owned French brand is renowned for its exquisite body care products imbued with extra-virgin oils, and has now partnered with the Rosewood London to bring its super high-end products to the hotel’s in-house Sense Spa. Of the five treatments on offer, I opt for ‘Comme Une Terre Fertile’, the signature massage, which promises ‘unique sensations of a poetic journey throughout the seasons’ – and it doesn’t disappoint. The brand’s expert therapists have created a whole catalogue of new patented massage techniques (each masseuse studies their own thick manual to learn them all), and they really are incredible, working the oils – each inspired by a season – deep into my muscles from head to toe after a fabulous full body scrub has removed all the outward city grime. The oils smell wonderful and are filled with natural, simple goodness which leaves my skin smooth and soft, while my muscles and senses alike feel supple and liberated for days afterwards. This is certainly no ordinary massage. Comme Une Terre Fertile (90 minutes), £185 (sensespalondon.com; maisoncaulieres.com)

Skincare Spa The Lowry Hotel has a new spa, and it’s the first QMS Skin Spa in the UK. Founded by Dr Erich Schulte, a former trauma surgeon who sees the future of skincare in the development of technologies to transport the ingredients deep into the epidermal layer, the spa and medicosmetic products offer powerful, intelligent skincare formulations based on hard science. It’s a pretty impressive space too: somewhat space age, and the perfect place for a Pure Oxygen Facial, allowing us to leave looking firmer, smoother and radiant! It’s got our vote. salon of the year Congratulations to Sensoria Beauty for their prestigious Salon of the Year Award from figure treatment company, BioSlimming UK. Sensoria Beauty at The Wild Board Hotel (sensoriabeauty.co.uk)

Top Marks The Good Spa Guide – widely considered the spa-lovers’ bible – has recognised our very own Mere Golf Resort & Spa once again, awarding it a ‘5 Bubbles’ rating for the third year running, thanks to its state-of-the-art facilities, luxury treatments and dedication to customer service. The guide’s ‘spa spies’ concluded that ‘The spa at The Mere is a lovely, traditional spa space with some fine finishing touches. Many spas now miss out on things like the post-treatment sorbet and candles and flowers throughout, so it’s great that The Mere has these. Overall, it’s a wonderful spa space’. Well, congrats all round then. (themereresort.co.uk)

Top Tip for the Summer Season “Keep your skin hydrated with skin sprays like rose water by Mario Bardescu or MAC fix, and for an oily skin use a setting spray on top of your make-up to make it last through the humid evenings. I work and live in LA where this tip is year round due to the climate!” Etienne Ortega is a celebrity make-up artist. He will be at the Lowry Hotel, Manchester to share his secrets on 5 September at 7pm, and will also be hosting a series of lessons at the Pout Patrol Manchester academy, (poutpatrol.co.uk) 99

Codename hyper Total has joined forces with Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing to unveil their ground-breaking hypercar, codenamed AM-RB 001, at Aston Martin’s HQ in Gaydon, England. The car is the result of a unique Innovation Partnership between the British brand and eminent F1 team, combining the vision and skills to create a road car the like of which has never been seen before. Built around a lightweight carbon fibre structure, the AM-RB 001 boasts radical aerodynamics for unprecedented levels of downforce in a road-legal car. Thanks to the genius of the design, much of this downforce is generated through underfloor aerodynamics, leaving the designer free to craft a pure yet breathtaking dramatic form. The AM-RB 001 is a bespoke machine from the tyres up. More details of the AM-RB 001‘s technical specification will be revealed in due course, but its heart is a new, mid-mounted, high-revving, naturally aspirated V12 engine with the potency to achieve a 1:1 power-toweight ratio; 1 bhp per kilo of weight. Total volume will be between 99 and 150 road cars inclusive of all remaining prototypes and 25 track-only versions, with first deliveries commencing in 2018. (astonmartin.com)

You’re late for work and you can’t find your keys. We’ve all been there. But TrackR has created a device that is as big as a 10 pence coin that might just make a difference to your morning routine. Already the creators of the world’s largest Crowd GPS network, the owners of the tiny TrackR bravo are also often heroes of the day, able to recover stolen valuables. How does the Crowd GPS work? If your item went missing with the TrackR bravo device attached, all TrackR enabled phones who have the app installed would begin to search for it. If another user came nearby the lost item, that user’s phone would anonymously ping the TrackR server to update the item’s owner with new GPS coordinates of when and where it was last. Pretty cool hey! £22.72 (thetrackr.com)

This XK140 was privately entered into the race and driven by Roger Walshaw and Peter Bolton in 1956, but it was erroneously disqualified while running in 11th place with 206 laps. “The opportunity to restore the only Jaguar XK 140 to race in the 24hs of Le Mans 60 years ago was compelling,” said Peter. “In 1956 this private entry car astounded the crowds and it is a privilege to take this car back to Le Mans and drive it in what will probably be my last competitive race on a circuit I love and where I won in 2010 in the Jaguar D-Type OKV1.” 103

TOP of the range Maserati drives into the muddy world of the SUV but can’t leave behind its status as a performance brand, says Matthew Carter

I

t has a long and glorious motor racing history, a back catalogue crammed with wonderful sports cars and performance saloons and a name – Maserati – that simply sounds fast. So imagine the dilemma facing the company when it realised that the car everyone wants these days is an SUV, a large four-wheel drive vehicle that the Americans call a truck. How would such a thing fit into the Maserati canon? The answer turned out to be fairly simple. With a little help from friends at Ferrari they’ve produced Levante, a car they’re calling The Maserati of SUVs. In other words, performance remains at the fore. In truth, modern SUVs are a long way from what we Europeans might consider trucks. The Porsche Cayenne was arguably the first sporting SUV but now the choice is huge. Joining established machines like the Range Rover Sport, Audi Q7 and BMW X5, are newcomers such as the compact Jaguar F-Pace and Porsche Macan and the large and luxurious Bentley Bentayga. Even Rolls-Royce is getting in on the SUV act, with Project Cullinan scheduled for release in 2018. Faced with those market trends, Maserati simply had to produce an SUV – it is expected that Levante, named after an easterly wind that blows through the Mediterranean, will account for half the company’s annual sales, making it the most significant Maserati for many a year. When it arrives in the UK later this year, with prices starting at more than £54k, Levante will compete with the Porsche Cayenne as well as the SUV/coupé crossovers from BMW (X6) and Mercedes (GLE Coupé).

104

So here we are driving Levante, carefully, down a gravel-strewn hill in the middle of the Italian countryside rather than blasting it around a race track. The intelligent four-wheel drive system’s hill descent control is working its magic, and progress is slow but sure-footed – just as it should be off-road. Even though Maserati and Jeep are both part of the same company, Maserati has not turned to its American sibling for help with the four-wheel drive package. Rather, Levante uses much of the hardware developed for the Ghibli saloon, but comes as standard with an intelligent all-wheel drive system and height-adjustable air suspension – both vital elements if the car’s SUV credentials are going to be accepted. Air suspension automatically lowers the normal ride height by 35mm at speed for better aerodynamic efficiency, and raises it by as much as 40mm when off-road. Our loose surface course includes climbs and descents, muds, rocks and ruts with the occasional water splash thrown in for good measure. Levante copes admirably. In truth, it’s not the most demanding off-road course in the world, but this isn’t meant to be a sump-cracking, chassis-wrecking test of the car. Of course, in the real world, the latest Maserati will spend most of its life on road surfaces with only the occasional foray off the beaten track. So how does it work on road? The good news is that it drives like a Maserati should. Under normal road conditions the 4x4 system sends all of the drive to 

the back wheels, making the car handle like a Maserati saloon. If conditions change, however, it takes only 150 milliseconds for the drive to be split in any ratio up to 50:50, front to rear. With standard air suspension, the ride is extremely comfortable in Normal mode and suitably taut in Sport mode. It looks the part, too. Maserati has decided its SUV should be more coupé than square rigger, so it has a high-waisted side profile, powerful rear haunches and a sloping roof line. It also has frameless doors just like a sports car. The upright front, however, is a reminder that this is not a sports car – the large, toothy grille dominates. It is a car that looks better in the flesh than in pictures: Levante has real presence. It’s pretty good inside, as well. The boot is large and the interior roomy: this is a genuinely practical Maserati that’s both sporting and luxurious at the same time. Quality leather dominates the interior and there’s even the option of a Zegna silk headlining. A raft of advanced driver systems is available, including Hill Descent Control, Lane Departure Warning, Surround View Cameras and Forward Collision Warning, while the dashboard is dominated by an 8.4-inch colour touch screen that operates the latest Fiat Group infotainment system, which now incorporates Apple CarPlay. So that only leaves performance to talk about and this is where the Ferrari connection can be revealed. The top model is the Levante S, powered by a Ferrari-built twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, developing a heady 430hp. This potent power pack turns 0-62mph dash takes 5.2 seconds, as the Levante into a snarling beast smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic with an urge totally in line works its way seamlessly through Maserati with the Maserati image. the gears. On Garda

In the days running up to Melissa Porter’s trip to Lefay Spa Resort, overlooking Lake Garda, it was awarded World’s Best Spa 2016. She immerses herself in the energy of whatever makes a place worthy of such a prestigious accolade

I

’m given two arrival airport options, and I choose Milan Bergamo – direct from Manchester in just over two hours. To collect me from the airport is a private transfer that weaves us along the elegant curvy coastline toward Gargnano in around an hour and a half. My friend chooses to fly into Verona airport and hires a cheeky convertible to navigate the same coastline from the opposite direction. Her trip coincides with Friday Italian rush hour traffic and takes the same time as if I were to travel from Manchester to Alderley Edge... on foot. Lefay is a family passion. Owned and run by the Leali family who, after selling their airline to Lufthansa, identified an opportunity to create a 3,800 square meter eco-spa with a resort, perched amidst the crevices of a mountain, overlooking grandiose Garda and a precious space the locals had requested not be turned into real estate. Fast forward to 8 August 2008, and Lefay Spa Resort was born, encompassing the values of wellness, luxury and sustainability. One of Leali’s core values is people: 60 per cent of their team is from the region. It is “...fundamental to our sustainable way,” according to managing director, Mr Alcide Leali. Continuing with the

110

sustainable nuance, I notice how the extraordinary resort architecture is sympathetic to the original scape. Lefay’s local architect has artfully nestled all the spa’s suites into the available undulations of the mountain, affording each one uninterrupted lake views. The state-of-the-art outdoor pools and exterior relaxation areas are all blended within the original olive and lemon landscape. Somehow, respecting what was, serves to create a seamless, simple transformation into a modern day, luxurious oasis. I’m curious about what Lefay considers ‘luxury’, as I believe it is an overused, subjective word that can often lead to disappointment. The word luxury and the word caravan used conjunctively confuse me. I seek clarification and hear new luxury defined as: silence, nature and space. Music to the ears of a freedomseeking introvert. Let my new heavenly Italian experience begin. On arrival at Lefay, the first thing I notice is that the resort appears to be sitting on top of the lake, when in fact it takes a short drive up a hillside to reach our destination. Their geographical rationale is smart. If the spa were to sit directly on the lake, because of the noise,

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel

it wouldn’t be considered a luxury wellness destination. I hop out of the car and peep over a stone wall to spot miles and miles of blue lake stretching from left to right as far as the eye can see. I’ve arrived in paradise and feel content. I turn my head away, momentarily, from the lake and see I’m surrounded by their 11 hectares of gardens including woodlands, terraces with olive groves and the Mediterranean hillsides resplendent with wild horticulture. Lefay’s landscape features a 2km running track and fitness trail with five stations inspired by Chinese traditions for meditation and rebalancing exercises. The smells swirling from the local plants and flowers are intoxicating and induce a sense of wellbeing. The interiors of Lefay are designed by Mrs Leali, who has incorporated exquisite materials and pieces sourced from the local area. I particularly notice the delightful flooring crafted from local olive trees. She’s successfully breathed the energy of new luxury into her space with the effect that each area feels comfortable. Not intimidating, which you might expect from a ‘world’s best’ anything. Feeling ravenous, I decide to eat and choose to first sample La Grande Limonaia, the gastronomically fancier of their two restaurant options. It’s worth pre-booking to secure a window seat that offers views over the surrounding mountains and lake; I almost forget to converse with my dinner partner as am mesmerised. The smell from the internal lemon trees combined with the flavours of local Italian

fare makes this experience is something I shall remember forever. Low calorie delicious dishes are available from their Lefay Spa light menu. This restaurant is also the breakfast location and what a delight. Freshly squeezed juices, no sugar added tortes and fluffy egg white omelettes to support a well-earned day of relaxation. Trattoria La Vigna is my lunchtime favourite, serving the most delicious and healthy buffet created through respecting the following five 

principals: Mediterranean diet, seasonality, Italian character, ethics and local suppliers. Breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed donning bathrobe and slippers. I highly recommend this leisurely experience – particularly as a bathrobe offers the flexibility of an adjustable belt. Central to Lefay Resort is the eco-spa, which is like none I’ve experienced before. It combines classical Chinese medicine with a twist of Western influence. The spa brochure reads like a bible and their infamous aqua-lifting

“Trattoria La Vigna is my lunchtime favourite, serving the most delicious and healthy buffet” experience with acupuncture is a must. I’m booked onto their Discovery programme: a three-day holistic experience featuring a whole catalogue of relaxing treatments, combined with mental programmes to create a 360-degree wellbeing experience that is unique to Lefay. I leave feeling as if I’ve been suspended in heaven and once again reconnected to my core. All at 600m above sea level. Price for the two-night discovery programme is 720 Euros with all meals and herbal teas during the day. Rooms at Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda start from 290 Euros per night and include breakfast, transfers to Gargnano, access to the pools and saunas and use of mountain bikes. (lefayresorts.com)

Weekend away …Anassa, Cyprus WORDS: GEMMA KNIGHT

W

idely thought of as the Queen of the Mediterranean – the resort which needs no introduction – I was surprised not to have known Anassa by reputation before setting foot on its dreamy, immaculate grounds. Sometimes, of course, it’s nice to travel sans expectations – although in this case, they’d have been exceeded anyway. Anassa re-opened in March after a three-year, multi-million-Euro refurbishment; and it shows. A pre-arranged transfer speeds us from Paphos airport through 45 minutes of rolling Cypriot countryside and up a long, snaking driveway, then deposits us at the resort’s entrance – all whitewashed walls piqued by neat glass, creeping bougainvillea, plush banquettes and a welcome blast of air con (though if you aren’t comfortable with temperatures of 35°C and higher, steer clear of Cyprus in July). As if a switch has been flicked, I am relaxed – magic. The resort, which lines the edge of west Cyprus’ rugged Akamas peninsula, reflects the style of a quaint Cypriot village (complete with cobbled paths, village square and Byzantine chapel), and the refined 166 low‐rise rooms, suites and residences continue this theme, with billowing silk, soft linen and chic, minimalist décor in nautical blues and taupes, all designed by esteemed Parisian Joelle Pleot. The resort is close to the small town of Latchi – well worth an explore, particularly for the boat trips departing from its marina for the utterly

114

blissful Blue Lagoon – but the resort is sprawling, private and more than sufficiently equipped that you need never set foot outside it, should you be seeking full relaxation mode. To fill the time between all that arduous swimming and sunbathing (be it at the resort’s beautiful private beach or its gorgeous infinity pool – complete with swim-up bar, which I cannot recommend highly enough), there is a dazzling selection of on-site facilities and activities, including everything from watersports and a kids’ club, to boutique shopping and fine-dining. Personally, however, I could happily spend a week drifting hazily back and forth between Thalassa, one of the best resort spas I’ve ever encountered; the terrace of the glorious Armonia bar; and Pelagos, the casual al fresco tavern beside the pool (the other two restaurants – Basiliko and Helios, both gourmet – are spectacular, but the view and Cypriot specialties at Pelagos blow them both away). And although Anassa already passes the luxury test with flying colours, there is one thing which puts it genuinely into a league of its own – its wonderful, friendly, attentive staff. From the moment we arrived until the moment our return transfer started its engine, everyone from concierge to bellboys, maids to bartenders, were jovial, kind and beyond-the-call-of-duty helpful. It’s the little things which make somewhere like Anassa shine, and shine it does. Rooms from €178 per person, per night. Suites from €840 per suite, per night (anassa.com)

Outdoor Learning Macclesfield MP, David Rutley joined Beech Hall School as it celebrated the official opening of its brand new outdoor learning centre, “Forest School”. Each week, the pupils will take a class outside where they will be taught in a fun new way to help them get closer to nature. They will take part in many creative activities designed to encourage them to express their imaginations, such as building fairy huts using what they find and, as was the case during the official opening ceremony, making camp fires to toast marshmallows and cook food on a barbeque. Withington Girls’ School’s debut performance at the Alderley Edge Music Festival hit the right note with judges in two classes awarding the WGS choristers a coveted first prize. In the Festival’s 100th celebratory concert, Withington’s Voccine Choral Group, made up of girls from Year 7 upwards, and the Middle School Choir, comprising girls from Years 7 to 9, took to the stage to compete against other local schools – and, after impressing the adjudicators with their ‘good vocal technique’ and energy, they were overjoyed to score a spectacular 89-point Distinction award to take away the Rowell Cup. Individual prizes were also achieved by other WGS girls – including Juniors – across various entry classes. (wgs.org)

Ice-Cream Dream As part of a Business Enterprise project, Year 5 from The Queen’s Lower School in Chester were challenged to demonstrate how they could turn £5 into a profit in just a month. One group of business savvy girls went straight to the top, pitching an idea for an exciting new sorbet to the Mecca of iced treats, The Ice Cream Farm. The Queen’s girls managed to get a meeting with the creative team behind the mouth-watering flavours at Cheshire Farm Ice Cream. Spending just £4.41 of their allocated £5, their idea for ‘Tropical Ginger Ninja’ sorbet, which consists of a tasty blend of mango, banana and ginger, was an instant hit with the team, who immediately put it into production. The tropical sorbet has already gone on sale in The Ice Cream Farm’s parlour and retails at £2.25 for a single scoop or £3.50 for a double. In addition to this, all of the profits that are raised in the process will be split between the RSPCA and the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, as decided by the Queen’s School pupils. Enquiring Minds Education these days is about so much more than teachers delivering content-rich lessons and pupils writing down facts and figures to be revised later in the year. Richard Griffiths, deputy head (academic) at The King’s School in Macclesfield discusses

S

chools are essential to shaping a child’s future success in higher education and the work place. It might be hard for those involved in delivering education to admit, but none of us really knows what type of jobs the pupils of today will be doing tomorrow. What is clear is that we need to be creating young people with the attributes and characteristics that will allow them to continue to learn new skills and to adapt throughout their working lives. Children are bundles of potential and a good education should nurture the mind, foster individuality and develop personality. A variety of teaching methods and a broad-based curriculum should spark the learner’s interest and make learning fun as well as meaningful. Importantly, education should promote self-esteem and nurture aspirations for the future. Children should experience being part of a community that promotes respect, allowing them to work together and develop effective communications skills. At both primary and secondary levels, rather than just trying to get our young people to be able to pass exams, we should be aiming to create pupils who have enquiring minds, that are able to ask the right questions and then show resilience, and work collaboratively, to find the solutions to a problem.

118

At King’s, we changed our approach to learning two years ago and introduced a new curriculum. In our Infants and Juniors, our ‘Learning Challenge’ curriculum is designed to make learning as engaging as possible, promoting reasoning, problem-solving and independent enquiry. Humanities, arts, sciences and technical subjects are taught in a crosscurricular way through ‘enquiry questions’ such as: ‘What do you have to do to get your picture on a bank note?’ The new approach has led to children being more engaged in their own learning, with greater recall of the topics. In the Seniors, a new curriculum for 11-16 year olds has put a greater emphasis on developing the learning habits of reasoning, reflecting, questioning, collaborating and resilience. In each lesson, teachers not only deliver the course content, but actively develop these skills. Along with Critical Thinking lessons and a new Global Perspectives course in the Sixth Form, which sits alongside traditional A-levels, we are confident that our ‘education’ is helping to ensure that our pupils will move on from us as confident, ambitious individuals with a wide range of interests, who are able to contribute positively to society. OPEN LINES

Parent-teacher communication plays a big role in helping your child to have a successful time at school. Claire Halfpenny, accountant and mum of three, shares some of the things she has learned in her experience of public and private education

T

he best tip for success at school is no big secret. If you can work together with teachers as allies to get the best for your child, that is the perfect scenario. Sometimes, though, it can feel like there’s an invisible line that you shouldn’t cross. At home, you know all about your child: you help with the homework, you know how they live and play with siblings and friends. At school, however, there are things only their teacher knows about them: the help with school work, and their social development in the classroom and on the sports field. If this knowledge can be combinesd it gives you a fuller understanding of your child, benefiting them, you and the teachers. It will be no surprise that the first thing I am going to mention is communication. But it needs to work both ways, and in my experience sometimes this isn’t the case, for whatever reasons – not necessarily because of the teacher, but I shan’t get on my soapbox about that.

Teacher-parent miscommunication or misunderstandings are not as uncommon as you think. Especially when you are just starting out as a parent – along with everything else you have to learn! But, having stewed myself, the best thing is to approach it straight away. Ask for a meeting – some time together, not just catching them in a playground – and ask the questions. The more you know about the other side of the imaginary line, the more equipped you are to handle the situation. Really, all you want to know is how you can help them do the best for your child. My eldest did not enjoy school, and I took it personally. Had I chosen the right school? Was I doing the best I could do as a parent? And when I got the call to go in and meet with the teacher, I felt that they were passing judgement on me. At first anyway. But really we were sitting down to work out the best way to deal with the situation, together, confronting the issues, both sides of that line. A partnership approach – a united front, if you wish – relies on teachers listening to parents, and parents taking the time to understand where teachers are coming from. Not, as I admit I have done, defending before understanding. Ultimately your goal is to do the best for your child, and it is a scary thing, that responsibility for another human being and how they turn out. So if you can share that responsibility a little, a few hours a day, surely that’s a good thing?

MUM’S THE WORD

45-year-old Suzy Glaskie, mother of three, business founder and holistic health coach talks about being the best mum she can be

L

ike all working mums, I have to juggle various commitments (though I’m very fortunate to have my mum living nearby, always ready to pick up any of the kids if I’m working). One key to juggling without feeling overwhelmed is something I coach most of my female clients in: the art of saying “no”! I can’t do everything and I’m at peace with that. If I need to turn somebody or something down, then I do that politely but unapologetically. I’m not bothered about FOMO (‘fear of missing out’), maybe because I try to avoid Facebook as much as possible unless it’s for work. Equally, I don’t stress if I’m not able to put my daughter to bed every night. As long as I’m doing what I need to do for the family most of the time, then that’s fine with me. Being a perfectionist is a ticket to being burnt-out and unhappy. The kitchen can be a huge, time-sucking minefield so I’m a big fan of cooking once and eating twice, three times (or even four if I’m really pushing it). I’ve finally figured out a few really nice dishes that I can make with very little effort and that everyone will eat. If I’m able to fit in making a freshly prepared meal then that’s great. If not, we’re all fans of crispy baked potatoes, which my kids can cook themselves. I definitely don’t put

124

pressure on myself to produce a culinary masterpiece every evening. I’m a big believer in kids taking responsibility for their own mess. My kids know they’re expected to pitch in (with good grace!): whether it’s emptying bins, loading the dishwasher, hanging up the washing to dry, hoovering or clearing the table. Being a martyr to the family helps absolutely nobody and I think it’s one of the key reasons that so many women are suffering poor health, low energy and exhaustion. My sleep is sacrosanct these days: becoming a health coach really taught me the value of eight hours’ proper sleep. That means you’ll never ever find me cleaning the kitchen, cooking or catching up on admin at midnight. I know that I can only help people to thrive if I give them 100 per cent when coaching them and if I’m following my own advice…so looking after myself is a crucial part of my job. Suzy Glaskie, from Bowdon, is mum to Max, 18, Louis, 15, and Ariella, 10. Having founded and co-directed award-winning marketing communications consultancy Peppermint Soda, she retrained as a holistic health coach and launched Peppermint Wellness. She now supports individuals, groups and companies in regaining their health, finding their balance and reaching their goals. (peppermintwellness.co.uk)

Dainty florals, sugar almond pastels and cotton blouses are the name of the game at La Coqueta this season. The label’s SS16 girls collection is a mismatch of tea dresses, Peter Pan collars and lilac overcoats – ideal for the late summer months. For the boys, a nautical theme takes the lead, with red gingham shorts, white shirts and cobalt blue dungarees – catering for both a formal occasion and a day at the park. M Park Life If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise. Decorated in a sweet floral print, they are ideal for barbecues, birthday parties and lunches at the park – because everybody knows that entertaining small children is no picnic. Un

y paws have definitely been doing the rounds in Cheshire this summer, hitting the festival circuit hard and meeting you all. The summer festivities are still going strong, but we all need a bit of time to wind down and, with the evenings still light, I love nothing more than to take my car for a spin and wind down from the day playing my music. As the White Stripes put it, ‘Fall is here, hear the yell, back to school, ring the bell’. This month, exhausted parents pack their children off for the new school term, leaving BBQs and day trips filled with fun, a happy but distant memory, as we are faced with the hectic call of Monday mornings yet again. But all is not lost. With Aston and I spending our days jumping in leaf piles and searching for conkers, I really feel that September is one of the best months in Cheshire. The outdoor cinema weekend hits Tatton Park on 9 September, taking Top Gun, Dirty Dancing and Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory to the big screen under the stars. On the 16 September, it will be possible to see the penumbral lunar eclipse in the Cheshire sky, and let’s not forget Halloween will be with us in the bat of an eye. I am also delighted to announce that I will be taking part and supporting The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation’s Spooky Welly Walk this year – a 2-mile Halloween-themed family walk with 20 different trick or treat stations along the route. This year they are holding 2 events, one on 22 October at Sefton Park, Liverpool, and the other on 29 October at Sherdley Park, St Helens. You will find me somewhere along the trail of Sherdley Park telling spooky stories and doing paw signings. The charity was set up 26 years ago by renowned thoracic surgeon Professor Ray Donnelly, who was appalled by the dreadful outlook for lung cancer patients and their families. When BBC presenter Roy Castle was diagnosed with the disease, he approached Professor Donnelly and offered his help. In the last months of his life, he travelled across the UK by train to raise £1million to fund research to beat lung cancer, and this wonderful charity continues his legacy through funding research into the diagnosis of lung cancer early enough to allow a cure to be possible. Today, lung cancer may still be the biggest cancer killer, but tomorrow it doesn’t have to be, because we can beat it – together. Help today, help tomorrow, help forever. Love & Licks,

EU REFERENDUM: The calm begins to return after the storm W O R D S : Crispin H arris M R I C S , J a c kson - S tops & S ta f f

W

e were rather taken aback by the referendum result here in the Jackson-Stops & Staff Wilmslow office, as I’m sure many of you were. None of us believed that the country would vote to leave the European Union, but that is exactly what happened. The immediate negative reaction of the stock market and a plummet in the value of sterling made us feel a little anxious to say the least, and it’s fair to say that our phones were quieter than usual the day after, over the weekend and into Monday. Tuesday saw a different picture emerging, with confidence beginning to return to the stock market and a partial recovery of sterling, and our phones began to ring again, with the number of requests to view properties higher than immediately before the vote. Whilst it would be foolish to say that there will be no changes to the markets, positive or negative, many buyers we speak to know that the changes will be gradual – over a number of years - and there’s no need to put life on hold or postpone a house move. The national press tell us that now is a good time to buy a home, and that vendors may be more open to price negotiation than they were before the vote. The truth is that vendors are open to negotiation – to a point – but this process of negotiation can only begin with an offer. Buyers should have the confidence to make offers; however ultimately vendors have the power of veto, and no obligation to accept any offer that they are not happy with. A good agent will always encourage a buyer to make an offer if they are seriously interested. Even if in the first instance it is not acceptable it is a great way to open up the conversation, which may ultimately lead to the vendor and the buyer reaching an agreement that both parties are happy with. So yes, the press is right: it is a good time to make an offer on a property, but then again it always has been. One thing is for sure: if you don’t make the offer you will never find out what you could have secured the property for!

The DREAM Makers

At the helm of one of the north-west’s most respected luxury developers, David Graham is redefining the benchmark for high-end homes. He meets Gemma Knight to talk art, ideas and organic design

145

INSPIRATION

“I

love architecture and how structures are created and developed,” David Graham explains when we meet. “I spend a lot of time in Dubai and it still amazes me the scale and luxury they achieve.” Immediately, it’s obvious that this is not a man who sees limitation as a necessary component of luxury. It was more than 26 years ago that David established his company, David Graham Developments, largely as a response to what he felt were shortcomings in the market. “I knew the quality of the homes for sale were not what I believed represented value for money, or quality to the level I knew existed,” he says. “I still find it amusing when you see properties advertised with the words ‘high-end luxury’, when all they have done is added an en-suite bathroom or a kitchen with a breakfast bar. Unfortunately, ‘high-end’ has become a byword for entry level which is not a good jump off point for any home owners new to the housing market. I wanted to

146

create a company which focused on design, attention to detail and functionality without compromise, so that’s what I did.” Since then the company has redeveloped and built countless homes, with its main focus on major redevelopments and construction for clients wanting to create their own dream spaces – a task which can encompass anything from transforming a complete floor into a master bedroom suite with walk-in wardrobes and his-and-hers wet rooms, to constructing purpose-built showrooms for private car collections and everything in between. “My favourite subjects at school were always wood work, metal work, art and design, so looking back you could say I was driven to be creative with my hands,” David tells me. “The homes we build or renovate are often

Homes and Interiors

very challenging, especially when redeveloping the current structure, so we work very closely with structural engineers and architects to create the client’s wish-list, so to speak. We’re constantly asked: “Can we change this part of the home so we could incorporate this or that into the design?” – which, in most cases, we can – but it does mean that the building process is always very fluid right up to the very end. “We all understand the build program is a very personal journey for the client and it’s imperative that we capture their passion and reflect this throughout the process. We’ve started many a project only to have the client say “I’ve just seen this fabulous dressing room in a magazine or this wine cellar at a tasting event – can you make this part of our new home?” – which means bespoke developments can be incredibly organic and challenging.” The length of each project depends, of course, on many factors at the planning stage, with some clients approaching the company with a detailed, fixed idea of exactly what they want, and many others having only the bare bones of an idea which they’ve not yet explored further. It’s then that David’s design

team begins to present options for the spaces which need to represent functionality while also reflecting the client’s living style, passions, and achievements in life. Once all these elements have been incorporated, plans can be submitted and a program of construction take place, with most homes handed over within 8 to 14 months, depending on the scale of construction required. “Most of the clients we build for have plans already drawn up,” 

“I wanted to create a company which focused on design, attention to detail and functionality without compromise”

147

inspiration

confirms this reputation in spades. He remarks that it’s the team’s wealth of experience – allowing them to call on a wide range of methods and solutions to suit each individual project – which makes the company stand out in the industry and, considering the advantage this provides when it comes to guiding and advising ambitious clients in search of their dream home, I’m certain he’s right. “Our current combined workforce has more than 200 years of building experience at very high levels of construction, renovation and design,” he tells me. “And it’s this wealth of hands-on ability that’s really paramount. Every building program presents moments where this experience is invaluable, from

David says. “So we listen to their wish-list of what they’d like to achieve, and then we take those initial concepts and our designers look at all the potential options, so that we can eventually deliver a scheme that exceeds their expectations. We have always considered it important to guide clients and offer our expertise and first-hand experience, and that remains our focus to this day.” David’s company prides itself on being both trusted and respected, and even the briefest look at the customer feedback they’ve received

148

“Our current combined workforce has more than 200 years of building experience” on-site solutions, structural engineers’ valuations, design concepts upgraded, and good old common sense based on past experiences – it really helps each program to stay on time and – most importantly – on budget.” It’s also very important to David and his team that as much time is spent planning and designing the elements of the project which aren’t visible as the ones which are – believing that you can only get a truly flawless result if the property is

Homes and Interiors

finished to the most exacting of standards both inside and out. Nevertheless, the company certainly doesn’t underestimate the importance of visually striking builds with state-of-the-art features and excellent aesthetics, and it’s obvious that even after 26 years, they still approach every project with the same eager enthusiasm as ever. “The redevelopment we’re currently starting work on, for example, is extremely exciting,” says David. “It’s a home that was only constructed six years ago, but that’s now been given an extensive redesign scheme with a wealth of the most cutting edge design features and construction methods available.

My team and I all share a passion for perfection, and with each new contract we are awarded, I believe the homes we deliver become more bespoke, creative and ever more of a testament to the company’s ethos.” (01244 470 501; davidgrahamdevelopments.co.uk)

T

he bathroom – when it’s not filled with foamy little ones or stray socks – should be a sanctuary of self-indulgence; an oasis of calm to which you can retreat with a candle and a glass of wine for a good long soak. While you are within this inner sanctum, you are forced to detach from the outside world and its many demands for a short but necessary period of reflection and relaxation. To this end, every element of your bathroom must be simple, beautiful and soothing – from the furnishings to the colours and even the floors. And if you need a little inspiration, fear not, as we bring you our top five expert tips for creating your very own bathroom haven.

151

RECREATE THE LOOK

1. The Focal Point Contrary to popular belief, the sink or wash basin – and not the statement bathtub – often ends up being the defining design feature of a bathroom. Make sure yours is the epitome of porcelain chic by setting it into a marble countertop or a piece of vintage furniture (free-standing basins are so 1995), and that the mirror above is well lit around the edges to show you at your best and draw attention to the design.

TOP

5 BATHROOM TIPS

2. Grooming If, like many women, you tend to do the majority of your grooming in the bathroom, it’s crucial that your dressing table or basin area is well lit (ideally from multiple angles, and with a dimmer switch to accommodate the natural light on offer at different times of day). And don’t forget to create plenty of storage for make-up, perfume bottles, creams and accessories so as to keep everything organised and easily accessible.

152

Homes and Interiors

3. Let There Be Light There are so many clever things you can do with lighting to make a bathroom more practical. For example, you could install a motion sensor operated light which comes on when you enter and goes off when you leave, or a combination of separately activated low and brighter lights – both useful tips if you use the toilet in the middle of the night and don’t enjoy fumbling for the light switch then being blinded.

5. Fabulous Floors

4. Colour And Texture When it comes to materials and hues, you want to keep it clean, sleek and simple. Many opt for the everpopular cream or white and black monochrome look, which really does work exceptionally well, particularly with black-and-white marble positioned beside glass and mirror to make the space feel light and spacious. Avoid fabric if at all possible, and opt for classic Venetian or Roman blinds at the windows.

Obviously the days of bathroom carpet are – thank heavens – long, long gone, but what best to replace it with? A bathroom needs to be practical (easy to clean and, of course, waterproof) but also stylish, so hardwood floors and marble are an excellent option. In our opinion, though, nothing beats the warmth and style of neat, minimalist tiles to give your bathroom a hint of colour – with underfloor heating, of course.

GARDENS

Water Ways Water adds extra tranquility and interest to a garden, as well as encouraging wildlife and providing the chance to introduce some new foliage, suggests Janine Murray-Smith

W

ith soothing sounds and distinctive plants, water features such as ponds, pools and water gardens are varied, beautiful additions to the garden. They provide focal points, hidden gems and a sense of peace and calm. Think of weeping willows bending down á la Wind in the Willows and the award winning Temple Gardens at Cholmondeley, not to mention creating your very own Monet moment. The beauty of it is, you can go as large or small as you want. If you have a small space, make a big impact with a compact water feature or create your own tabletop water garden using a decorative bowl and miniature water lily – a perfect centrepiece for outdoor dining. When choosing plants for ponds or water features, my advice is always to go for native water plants to attract wildlife. There’s nothing wrong with throwing in the

156

odd exotic at all and it does depend on what look you are going for but to me, native will always be my heroes. Also, despite being eager to get the look straight away, be careful not to fully plant up your pond, as plants will colonise naturally and you don’t want overcrowding. It’s important to choose the right plants for the depth of water and growth rate. Some plants and marginals (for planting around the water feature) can take over and strangle other varieties and pond life, but water lilies can live in depths from only 10cm. When choosing plants, take into consideration the foliage and flowering times to make your feature last as long as possible. Also, aim for bold clumps with strong contrasts that look effective from a distance. Another benefit has to be the wildlife a water feature can attract: birds, insects and frogs – all natural predators of slugs and snails.

GARDENS

SIMPLE GUIDE TO PLANTING Marginals Ornamental plants, whose role is to soften the harsh outlines and provide valuable shade. For shallow water and mud you can’t beat iris for colour and attention. Iris ensata (Japanese water iris), sibirica (Siberian flag) and versicolor offer blues and whites. Flowering in summer they are quite versatile, coping with most aspects (their least favourite is north) and full sun, partial shade. Menyanthes trifoliata (bog bean) covers pond edges well. It’s best planted in baskets at a depth of about 25cm to contain, and provides dainty white flowers. Marsh marigold (caltha palustris) is a great plant for bog gardens. The simple heart-shaped leaves clump well and produce beautiful bright yellow flowers in summer.

Marsh marigold (Caltha palustris)

Submerged plants Providing oxygen during the day and cover for aquatic life.

water violet (Hottonia Palustris)

Water violet (hottonia palustris) is an aquatic perennial with leaves like pine; it produces stems of primula like flowers for spring. Common water crowfoot (ranunculus aquatilis) can be annuals, biennials, evergreen or herbaceous perenials spreading by runners. It is short-lived with submerged leaves but the delicate white flowers provide dashes of interest throughout summer.

Waterlilies I could write a whole separate article on these sought-after water plants. The main thing is to choose ones appropriate to your pond size and depth. They offer iconic, elegant shapes and colours with lush foliage, and are an excellent choice for that tabletop pond, formal garden or informal space. When choosing your waterlily look for a healthy crown and make certain there is no damage to buds or leaves and also check the nursery display tanks are not weed-infested as you could take them with you! Deep water Nymphaea (waterlilies) are free-floating, heart-shaped and take time to establish. The best reference is rhs.org.uk

Cippyn MACCLESFIELD ROAD, ALDERLEY EDGE

This magnificent modern sevenbedroom family house with a superb leisure suite is nestled in a quiet elevated position, within walking distance of Alderley Edge. The house was built by the current owners in 2002, constructed of mellow red brick elevations with stone detailing, surmounted by a tiled roof. The house was built with a no-expensespared mantra which is evident throughout, with such details as stone flooring, bespoke kitchen and bathrooms, an abundance of oak, and living flame gas fires to the main reception rooms. The house has been cleverly designed to offer flexible accommodation ideal for modern family living, with a huge drawing room to the first floor. Each room has been beautifully decorated, with an integral leisure suite that is second to none. However, it is Cippyn’s location that sets it apart, being elevated, having south-facing rear gardens which screen the house

162

from view, being a short walk from central Alderley Edge, yet not on a main road – a truly rare location. A private tarmacadam entrance drive passes the houses fronting Macclesfield Road and leads to an impressive electric gate with CCTV, which opens onto a parking and turning area to the front of the house, with a drive leading down to further parking to the front of the

four-car garage. The house has a raised position, looking down over its extensive gardens, which consist of manicured areas of lawn, encompassed by mature specimen trees and shrubs. The rear gardens are south facing and an extensive decked area wraps around the rear elevation, accessed from the kitchen/breakfast room and the sitting room. On the market at a guide price of £3.3 million through Jackson-Stops & Staff, 8 Water Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 5AA (01625 540340; jackson-stops.co.uk)

or those looking for overseas property with a difference, it would be difficult to beat the credentials of the new IS Molas Golf Resort. An innovative lifestyle resort nestled in the lush greenery of Italian island Sardinia, this prestigious residential development was designed by lauded starchitect Massimilano Fuksas and champion golfer Gary Player and is as luxurious as it is striking. The resort itself features a new 18-hole golf course, 5 star hotel, private beach club, spa, updated sports facilities and a selection of luxury restaurants and boutiques – and, what’s more, you’ll be owning your very own enormous piece of art. The first phase of fifteen homes, due to be completed in October 2016, will comprise four villa types designed by Fuksas: villa Palas, villa Luxi, villa Nea and villa Arenada. Intended to be ‘inhabited sculptures’, each property is designed with the surrounding environment in mind, respecting Sardinia’s indigenous nature and capturing the spirit of the ancient Nuragic civilization, whilst incorporating contemporary luxury features which cater to modern living. Fuksas has designed each villa in compliance with the rules of bio architecture, with a focus on natural materials, while the landscaped gardens only use vegetation native to the region, such as myrtle, mastic, heather, arbutus trees and cork oaks. Designed to be completely immersed in their natural surroundings, every villa is uniquely positioned to capture the best possible vistas, which include breath-taking Sardinian sea, golf and mountain views. incorporate comprehensive design by Doriana Fuksas. “IS Molas is an experimental project,” Fuksas explains. “And this experiment involves working with the elements, in particular dealing with the shaping of structures by the wind and natural erosion. The resort draws inspiration from archaeological remains, recalling the Nuragic civilization. At the resort, people can return to living inside inhabited sculptures; these are the new forms of design and allow a sense of freedom; they surpass the box, the cage or the enclosure.” The resort currently boasts a 27-hole golf course which is among the most technically challenging in the Mediterranean, with Gary Player’s design team commissioned to create an additional 18-hole golf experience that will challenge all skill levels and also fit with the serene setting, overlooking the sea. The properties will be sold through

the Italian division of Sotheby’s International Realty – a particularly appropriate partnership considering the development’s artistic credentials. “IS Molas is a work of architectural art, completed by the availability of a 5-star concierge service at your disposal in your own home,” explains Clemente Pignatti Morano, managing partner of Italy Sotheby’s. “We’re excited to be part of such a unique project which presents residents with a truly exceptional living experience. The villas demonstrate the ultimate marriage of contemporary architecture, nature and design, which allows residents to fully immerse themselves in a unique living environment offered by outstanding sculpture.” The first fifteen homes are due to be completed in October 2016, and are available at a price range of €2.15M to €4.6M through Italy Sotheby’s International Realty (+39 02 87078300; sothebysrealty.com; ismolasresort.com)

FIRE STARTER Apparently a fire place can add to a property’s value and, depending on your fuel, can even save money on the bills. We like the sound of that, but, have to be honest, when we visited the team at North West Fireplaces it was more about the visual appeal! From natural to gas to completely false and from contemporary to stoves there’s more to offer on the fireplace front than we thought. And we haven’t even started on the surrounds. Steph and the team offer a completely bespoke service with the necessary friendly advice for novices like us too. Now, we just need to make some decisions... (nwfireplaces.com)
