Pick up your rackets and don the whites – tennis season is just around the corner. To get into the swing of things before Wimbledon kicks off in the coming weeks, head down to Will to Win Tennis Centre at Chiswick House and Gardens for a free session for adults and juniors. It’s due to be a fantastic way to get outside and enjoy some family time in the (hopefully) glorious weather and the day will give prospective Andy Murrays the opportunity to meet the coaches, join in on some games and win some prizes, all while having plenty of fun.
Chiswick Tennis Club is all about helping people, and this is evident from the workshop it’s hosting this month entitled Learn to Run with Ease. Running is a great way to keep fit, but doing it wrong can lead to injuries and put people out of exercising for a while – but this workshop should help prevent that. It’s led by Malcolm Balk, a level-four athletics coach and author of Master the Art of Running as well as Elizabeth Dodgson, who is qualified to teach the Alexander technique of running. After the workshop, runners should find that they can run more easily, more freely and without being prone to injury.
Pay a visit to The Forester Ealing this month if you like your beers, ales and ciders from around the country, because we’re fairly certain that you won’t be disappointed. Over the four days of this beer festival there is plenty going on, so it’s more than likely that you’ll find something to entertain you. It kicks off on 19 May, and on 20th there’s a barbecue to get your teeth into from midday. On the Saturday (21 May) there’s a hog roast from noon and live music from 4pm until midnight, with the event finishing off with a carvery from 12pm on 22 May. If there really is too much of a good thing (we doubt there is), then this is probably it.

21 May CHANGING PERCEPTIONS
26-28 May RARE READS
Katherine Ryan will be showcasing her latest material at Eventim Apollo this month, where audiences will be subjected to her wit, one-liners and razor sharp observations. Having made an impact on television shows like QI, Have I Got News For You and Live at the Apollo (to name a few), she has earned herself a loving and devoted fan base that stretches across generations, and her intelligent humour will leave any audience wanting more. The tour, entitled Kathbum, begins with a barage of hilarious abuse against celebrities, so the fun starts from the off.
This evening at Open Ealing will see Orchard Café become home to six witty readings performed by some of the acting world’s most revered members, including Joan Blackham, whose television credits include Dr Who, New Tricks and Raised by Wolves. American actor Keith Warren will also be there, with Peter Saracen and between the three of them, they’ll perform pieces called Twist and Turn, Gardening Leave and Roger’s Thesaurus among others. An intimate night with talented people, what could be better?
The London International Antiquarian Book Fair arrives at Olympia this month, with exhibitors from all around the world taking part. About 180 leading UK and international dealers ( from Sweden, the USA and Italy, to list a few) will be presenting rare manuscripts and ancient books, while live events take place elsewhere in the venue. The event is organised by a collaboration between the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers.

This month offers the last chance to see Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the National Theatre, so take the opportunity to see a fantastic, historical and moving performance before it vacates the stage. Set in Chicago in 1927, August Wilson’s play depicts the mother of the Blues, Ma Rainey, fighting her record producers for control of her music and she is determined to have Black Bottom recorded her way. Levee, the band’s trumpet player, has plans to push the band into the Jazz Age but he puts them all in danger by doing so. TWIST AND SHOUT
Paperback Writer and Rain are two Beatles tracks that had accompanying promotional videos made, which in turn set the ball rolling for music videos becoming a huge part of the industry. These promotional films were made in Chiswick House and Gardens exactly 50 years ago on 20 May. Until the four famous faces produced these videos, clips of artists recording their songs were always filmed in studios, but the cutting-edge Beatles films used the picturesque grounds of Chiswick House to create something remarkable. Why not head down and mark the occasion by visiting some of the spots where they recorded and pretend that you’re the fifth Beatle?

A planning committee at the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham unanimously approved the Friends of Brook Green’s application in 2015, and the project will be built next to the playground and tennis courts on the southern side of Brook Green. It’ll be clad with natural stone and there will be a café with accessible toilets. What’s more, there is planned outside seating for visitors to enjoy a coffee overlooking the tranquillity of Brook Green. The pavilion is another part of the green space’s regeneration, which is an on-going process. friendsofbrookgreen.org

Creative and Cultural Skills Apprentice of the Year at a ceremony dedicated to celebrating apprentices working in the creative and cultural industries who have shown exceptional commitment and ambition to learn new skills. When asked how she was nominated, Sherice told the Journal: “The executive director of the Lyric has been working with me for six months and I can only assume she was impressed with what she saw and put me forward. The college I attend, Lewisham and Southwark College, also put me forward for the award.”

The award is a celebration of young apprentice’s achievements and it means a lot to Sherice. “It’s made me realise that when you work hard, you’re recognised for it and people take the time to say ‘well done, great job’. It makes you feel appreciated and that what you do really

counts,” she said. Discussing the Lyric’s input in the process, Sherice sings the theatre’s praises.
Parkrun enthusiasts in west London will be pleased to hear that Hammersmith and Fulham Council will not be charging for the event that takes place every Saturday in Wormwood Scrubs. Councils across the UK have been debating whether to charge runners for their use of the parks, with critics of the runners saying that they wear out the grass and take up space on the paths, but runners and sporting communities have argued that it’s unfair to charge people to exercise in public spaces. Whatever other councils decide, Shepherd’s Bush park runners can leave their wallets at home.
“I’ve had a great experience as an apprentice – the Lyric has really supported me and I feel confident and that there’s nothing I can’t achieve,” she told us. Sherice dreams of being an executive of a theatre, but for the next few years she’s busy focusing on development and mastering as many different skills as she can. We asked her what it is that she likes about working at the Lyric, and she said: “I like the work it does with young people. I also like the fact that they have a lot of facilities that aren’t about acting and that you can come here and be yourself in a safe environment.” She finished by telling us that she would recommend taking the apprenticeship at the Lyric: “Life is about the experiences you have,” she says. Congratulations Sherice!

The Journal speaks to local whisky producer Compass Box as it launches its new limited-edition product this month
What did you want to create with this new addition to the range?
so they are whiskies that are perfectly suited to summer months.
What is your favourite whisky/food pairing?
Circus is really about enjoying a discovery – this rare old parcel of cask-aged blended Scotch whisky.
Whisky and cheese is one of the greatest food and drink pairings in the world, and not many people realise it. We’ve been trying to spread the word for years.
Small producers of spirits are creating some really great products at the moment – do you have a particular favourite from another distiller?
Can you tell us a little bit more about the idea of pairing whisky with cheese? Why isn’t it widely recognised?
I think it’s just because people have been told that wine and cheese is what you do. Actually, matching some wines with cheese can be very tricky. You can get some unattractive combinations sometimes. Whisky is much more accommodating and versatile with cheese than wine is.
Is there a sense of community with small-batch producers?
Tell us a bit about the new whisky – its name, character, comparisons and possible pairing suggestions
We are about to release a limited edition whisky called The Circus, which takes its name from an old Charlie Chaplin film. The whisky itself is sourced primarily from some very old cask-aged blended scotch. Finding old parcels of whisky like this is very rare, and we are only bottling a small amount, so when it’s gone, it’s gone. Kind of like the circus: ephemeral.
How long does it take you to launch a new product, starting from inspiration to bottling?
Every project has its own life cycle, but often they can take a year or more to come to fruition.
10
Certainly. When we go to spirits or whisky shows, we really feel a camaraderie with other small producers. Personally, I like to help other small companies, so we will share all sorts of information – distributors, information about foreign markets, which banks are more helpful to small companies than others, that kind of thing.
We really feel a camaraderie with other small producers

No 197 Chiswick Fire Station
Foxlow Chiswick
This building isn’t a stranger to housing a food and beverage business; it was home to Chiswick’s All Bar One before No 197 opened its doors. The new occupier of this former fire station offers plenty for everyone, and does it in style. The interior is simplistic but cool and allows you to focus on what really matters: the food. Pan-fried gnocchi, garlic-oozing chicken Kiev and sticky beef tacos are on the menu, and those with a sweet tooth are given plenty of choice too; a whole roast pineapple (which looks like a piece of modern art) and blueberry ricotta pancakes will give any sugar fiends their desired fix.
This restaurant knows its way around a steak (and most other dishes, for that matter), but it makes this list because it’s attached to the former Sanderson wallpaper factory (and flanked by the very grand Post Office), which goes by the name of Voysey House after its architect, Charles Voysey. In the grand building, with its industrial windows and faint whiff of a New York City-style apartment block, diners can eat the likes of ricotta dumplings with sprouting broccoli and courgettes while sipping on a Smokestack Mary cocktail in a site of local history.

Have you seen Bush Hall’s interior? It’s gorgeous, and while the restaurant isn’t under the chandeliers and ornate cornicing, we felt it shouldn’t be left out. If you do want to dine in the actual hall, you’ll have to book an enormous function, but if you’re looking for something a bit more low key, head to Bush Hall Dining Rooms for a chargrilled tuna fillet, lamb rump with smoked aubergine or pork belly with seared scallops, white bean sauce and chorizo oil. Emily Adams pulls on her gaming headset and steps into the world of virtual reality as she watches The Call Up
the call up
“I
t’s like I died and went to gamer heaven,” says Reap3r_2000, just one of the elite gamers chosen and invited to take part in a rather mysterious trial using state-of-the-art virtual reality technology. For those of you unfamiliar with this relatively new concept, virtual reality allows gamers to become part of the game by wearing hi-tech gaming gear, including a rather ominous-looking headset. The Call Up, written and directed by Charles Barker, discovers what happens when gaming reaches a whole new level and just like Call of Duty, Rainbow Siege and Halo, this is one for the gamers. A simple “let’s go” and we’re straight into the film. No messing about and no long drawn out introduction, much like a video game, which is refreshing to see. However, as the film progresses it misses key information: why exactly are these people here, who has invited them and who are they? Some form of character development is needed, rather
14
than fleeting glimpses into their lives as if in attempt to bulk out the storyline. The characters are a standard bunch of misfits thrown together into an uncomfortable situation and forced to get to know each other, work together and even fight together. Among this unlikely group, there are the usual characters: a love interest, the arrogant leader, the hysterical one and the outcast, but that’s all we’re shown at first. After a brief introduction, and some lastminute nerves, they all put on their motion capture suits and digital helmets. At first, it’s a thrilling and mind-bending experience. Pulling down the visor of their masks instantly takes them into the scene of a video game, in this case a war zone. But although the initial excitement of sampling modern warfare is exhilarating, the novelty wears off and soon they realise that this is actually real. Faced with enemy combatants, they realise they’re not playing any more, and they must fight for their lives. For some
of them, it’s a struggle to even hold a real gun (it’s certainly not the same as holding a gaming controller) but as the game gets tougher, killing seems to come as naturally as waving hello. We watch as they work their way through the levels of the game in a desperate attempt to escape, with disastrous consequences along the way. And, as you might expect from any video game, reaching the final level of the game isn’t quite as rewarding as they might have hoped – there’s always a twist. When it comes to films, we seem to be obsessed with old-fashioned period dramas or overly futuristic sci-fi thrillers, but The Call Up is right on time – virtual reality might soon be in everyone’s living rooms. This modernday action film tackles a very of-the-moment topic. The question is: if you can kill in a game, can you kill in reality? In cinemas from 20 May and available on DVD and digital from 23 May

[Q&A]
Whatever
the weather
The Journal finds out what makes Sky News weather presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar tick, discusses her life in Chiswick and career in broadcasting
You grew up in Tunbridge Wells – when and why did you move to Chiswick?
A little more than five years ago, I was contacted by Sky News and asked to come and do a screen test to potentially become their new weather presenter. After the screen test, I stopped for a bite to eat in Chiswick and fell in love straight away; it reminded me of Tunbridge Wells with all the lovely places to eat, beautiful shops and the atmosphere made me feel at home.
What are the challenges of your job?
My job is busy and non-stop, with lots to do for each one of my half-hourly forecasts. During the short gaps between my on-air time, I have to record weather updates for the Sky News app, website and the Sky News catch-up service. I also do a global weather forecast for various other services and I keep Twitter updated a lot.
What’s it like working with Eamonn Holmes?
Getting up at 3.30am can be hard – but once I’m at work, I forget that I’m tired because working with the Sunrise breakfast team gives me a huge buzz and we all get on brilliantly. Eamonn is a wonderful person and has really supported me over the years. He makes me laugh a lot and can be quite mischievous, regularly playing pranks.
Tell us what you love about living in Chiswick
The shops! I especially love The Old Cinema. If I’m ever bored I go there to browse, but I’ve also purchased some items for my flat over the years. There are some really unique pieces in there, and I highly recommend having a peek if you’ve not been before. I love Chiswick House and Gardens and often like to walk around the grounds on a warm evening in the summer.
16
Do you have any local eating and drinking spots that you’re fond of?
Charlotte’s Bistro is one of my favourites, and so is High Road Brasserie because it offers a great French 75 cocktail. I also love Carvosso’s where I had my 30th birthday party last year.
Describe your average working day
My alarm goes off at 3.30am and I’m in work by 4.45am. The first thing I do is check through all the overnight weather data, having already looked at it before going to bed. It’s crucial to see what’s changed by the morning before I start piecing together my forecast. Sunrise airs at 6am, with my first live TV forecast at 6.27am and after that it’s a full-on shift of live TV, recording more weather forecasts, updating and interacting with viewers on social media and constantly keeping an eye on the weather to make sure I have the latest information for everyone. After we’re off air at 9am, the rest of my shift is spent finishing my recordings and other updates for online, before heading to the gym – where of course I swap my heels for trainers.
Working with the Sunrise breakfast team gives me a huge buzz Is there actually a microclimate in Chiswick?
No, there isn’t. However, temperatures in London are generally a degree higher than the rest of the UK. This is due to a number of factors, but mainly pollution and the high density of buildings radiating heat.
Nazaneen Ghaffar
What goes on behind the scenes – do you have a lot of researchers?
Our weather department is a very small team. At any one time we have two people on shift; the weather presenter and a weather producer. The presenters (me and Isobel Lang) share the breakfast shifts, and the weather producer is there to write and update forecasts for the newsreaders to read for the rest of the day. NEW LOOK, GREAT TASTE
Chiswick High Road’s The Crown and Anchor has got a new menu that’s ripe for sampling. It launched late last month and includes pub favourites delivered with Crown and Anchor finesse, like sausage and mash, sandwiches, pies and fish dishes that you’ll never want to stop eating. If you can beat us to a table (we doubt you’ll be able to), why not get involved with the Craft Beer Showcase that’s running until 26 June? Siren Soundwave IPA, Rooster’s Baby Faced Assassin and Brewdog Ace of Chinook are just three of the craft beers you can sample until next month. NEW MARKET
Last month saw a new artisanal market open in the grounds of Belmont Primary School, comprising stalls selling coffee, craft beer and fine produce. You can head down and pick up fresh fish from the English Channel, as well as prime cuts of meat from butchers and a slice of pizza or two from Pizza Maria Piaggio’s pizza van. Pies, cheeses, fruit and veg are also all available and, if you’ve got enough energy afterwards, try and find the board games and music for some family fun in a community atmosphere. mustard Brook Green is treated to lashings of dining sophistication at the new relaxed brasserie gracing Shepherd’s Bush Road, Tom Hagues discovers section. Served in one dish with potatoes and a ham and chive sauce, it’s a simple plate that works with the flavours of each ingredient. The meaty haddock stands up to the creamy sauce, while the potatoes add much-needed texture with large chunks of ham doing the same. The rib-eye steak is also a sensation for the palate; it comes charred in a way that only results from faultless seasoning. The simplicity continues with dessert; a rhubarb crumble with custard that tastes like it came out of a loving, homely kitchen and a blood orange and almond cake with soft cream cheese. Simplicity, as well as light and healthy plates of food, is what makes diners flock back to restaurants at the moment. Mustard has hit this culinary trend’s bullseye, but does so in a way that suggests it’ll be around – and loved – a long time after the trend has moved on.

awrence Hartley and Tim Healy, owners of Joe Allen in Covent Garden, knew what they wanted to achieve with Mustard, the first of their planned ‘collection’ of restaurants with the same name. The starters that arrive at my table are potted shrimps with toasted granary and a Devonshire crab salad with crunchy chicory and wholegrain mustard. Both dishes are light and perfect for the summer months, and I am struck by a happy feeling of guiltlessness as I savour each morsel – it’s inspiringly fresh. THE STREET The very latest from west London’s vocal locals
TAKING THE BISCUIT Does anyone know of any good biscuit making classes or bakery courses that I could enrol on with my children? I’m thinking of local bakeries ideally, but I’ll happily travel into central London if the right class was based there. I’m always looking for things we can do together and I think this would be a really nice way to let them explore something they haven’t done before – and perhaps discover a talent we didn’t know they had. I could have the next Mary Berry living in my house! The girls are seven and eight, so youngfriendly classes would be ideal. - Mrs Shan
going to the market could be such a family affair? - Ms O’Reilly
DIDN’T MEAN TO! I was at Chiswick Station during a weekday morning earlier in the month and I accidentally brushed a lady’s coffee and spilled some of it. The train was about to pull away so I had to cry out my apologies as I dashed for it, but I really do apologise and should we bump into each other again (perhaps less physically next time), I’ll make it up to you with a fresh coffee. - Mr Edmondson
south east isn’t exciting enough! Can anyone suggest somewhere to appease us both? - Mr Valjar
GOOD MORNING SUIT My friend’s wedding is in June. I need to find something appropriate to wear because, although I’m not part of the groom’s party, I have been tasked with making a speech during the wedding breakfast. Do you think I should just stick with normal guest style or try something more traditionally formal? It’s a fairly standard wedding with morning suits and the like, so if someone could point me in the direction of a shop in west London that could style me for the occasion, I’d really appreciate it. - Mr Shand

THE INSIDE COUNTS We’ve seen successful recommendations on this letters page before, so we thought we’d turn here for some help. We need an interior designer to redesign our entire house. We have a three-storey property in Shepherd’s Bush and all the Google searches we’ve made don’t tell us whether the designers listed are reliable or flexible. Has anyone had any great experiences? - Mr and Mrs de Farro

MARKET MAGIC I want to draw attention to the new market at Belmont Primary School – I recently went and was so impressed at the huge amount of different produce available, as well as a good atmosphere to wander around the stalls in. I particularly enjoyed the pizza from the van and my children had a nice time too. Who knew
SHORT BREAKS I’m looking to escape with my partner for a weekend but we’re arguing about where would be best. I think somewhere in the south east of England would be nice, but he thinks we should head much further north to the Lake District. My argument is that the whole weekend will be taken up by travelling if we go there, but he’s adamant that the

The view from SAVILLS With a lot of conversations surrounding the possibility of Britain’s exit from the EU, we felt it was important to provide you with some research concerning what we think this means for the residential market. The political battle lines have been drawn ahead of the EU referendum on 23 June and there is much speculation as to what this may mean for UK and European real estate. Generally, we believe that the medium-term implications of the referendum are relatively unimportant for real estate. The fundamental attractions of all three asset classes – commercial, residential and rural – have more to do with the assets themselves than whether they sit within or outside the EU. However, we do believe that short-term economic uncertainty could impact on transaction volumes across these three sectors. Ultimately, the impact of the EU referendum is dependent on what the outcome means for the UK economy, given that housing policy is essentially a
Television Centre set for residential sales launch
Residential sales at Television Centre, the former home of the BBC in London’s White City, will launch to the public this weekend. It’s “the most exciting moment yet” for the Joint Venture development between Stanhope, Mitsui Fudosan and AIMCo, says managing director Alistair Shaw. The AHMM-designed scheme is set to eventually deliver 950 new homes and apartments, new cafés and restaurants, an independent cinema, 400,000 square feet of premium office space and a new outpost of private members’ club Soho House, complete with a 47-room hotel. This first phase of residential units, launching on Saturday 23 April, will see 432 apartments hit the market, with prices ranging from £700,000 for a one-bed, up to £7million for a penthouse. Completion is due in 2018. Apartments come with the full suite of amenities that might be expected from a landmark London development, including a state-of-the-art fitness club, 24-hour concierge, residential lounge, private screening room and a “rooftop culinary experience”. Last year, Stanhope reported that pre-launch sales interest was remarkably
high, with 130 (80 per cent) of the first 164 off-plan apartments to be released being been spoken for just a couple of weeks after a marketing display went up to give prospective buyers the chance to chat to agents Savills or Strutt & Parker about what’s available. Stirling Prize-winning architectural practice AHMM has designed the new look Television Centre, retaining many of the features of the famous Grade II-listed “donut” building including the external “atomic dots” and a celebrated mural by John Piper. Landscape architecture firm Gillespies is behind newly designed outdoor spaces that connect Wood Lane with Hammersmith Park through the Helios courtyard and landscaped Television Centre forecourt. The whole area is in the midst of a major regeneration, with Television Centre playing the star role in an £8billion 10-year overhaul of the wider White City area, which should see the creation of 4,000 new homes, over two million square feet of office space and an estimated 20,000 new jobs.
domestic issue and mortgage regulations sit with the Bank of England. The UK housing market may be affected, however, by associated economic uncertainty; both from itself and, in the event of a vote to leave the EU, the two year window for the Government to negotiate terms of an exit. A vote to stay in the EU would hopefully result in restored demand, though the extent of a ‘relief rush’ would vary from sector to sector. In the event of a vote to leave, such uncertainty would be extended to the period during which the UK renegotiates its relationship with the EU and other major trading partners. Short-term risks in the residential sector are greatest in those markets where international buyers are most active and we believe the impact on the wider UK market remains largely dependant on domestic factors. Whatever the outcome, there will continue to be a market once the uncertainty clears, albeit potentially more focused on needs-based movers. In the event you require more information, do not hesitate to contact Christopher Bramwell. Savills, 020 8987 5555, cbramwell@savills.com, savills.co.uk
