There’s cool American music playing, a stage set up for live performances, blue vinyl booths with Formica-topped tables, and, to my brother’s delight – despite him being 24 years old – a video game machine. The disco ball in the entrance sets the tone: The Breakfast Club is a place for a good time. The menu is North American in style – one popular option is fried chicken with waffles. We start with a sharing plate of buffalo wings, which come alongside a moreish blue cheese dip, and, because we can, avocado and poached eggs on toast. As well as being a novelty to order at supper, it’s a tasty dish, with a generous portion of simply seasoned crushed avocado.

could you think of anything better this summer? You won’t even have to travel far to experience the delights of an outdoor terrace and al fresco dining, just head to Cabot Square and get your fix at Ibérica La Terezza. Ibérica’s outdoor terrace will bring Spain to you with its exceptional choice of seasonal drinks and sensational dishes. In typical Spanish fashion, the chefs at Ibérica have mastered the art of cooking meats and its inhouse Josper adds the final touch to a charming menu. The Josper is an enclosed charcoal fired grill that is used to cook meat and fish to perfection. The enclosed door ensures that none of the natural moisture or flavour escapes from the food that’s cooked in it. So sit back, relax, enjoy the sunshine on your face and the delicious aroma of freshly cooked Spanish dishes and let the stress simply melt away. anary Wharf attracts superlatives, and no more so than with its architecture. The iconic skyline, huddled about One
Canada Square’s steaming pyramid, is perhaps the most widely recognised symbol of modern London. The area’s elevation from busy port to global business hub has its beginnings in the time of the Empire, and a narrative already inscribed on the future. It’s a story best told through its architecture, and five developments in particular.
The West India Docks At the beginning of the 19th century, the West India Docks development was the largest and most expensive building project in the world. It transformed the Isle of Dogs from a quiet stretch of reclaimed marsh into a thriving commercial hub serving the import trade from the West Indies.

The catalyst for its creation was the crime and inefficiency that plagued the riverside wharves in the Thames’ congested upper reaches. Merchant Robert Milligan led a consortium of businessmen who shared a single Trumpian vision: a high wall encircling London’s first commercial wet dock, where their cargos of rum, bananas, sugar and coffee could be unloaded quickly and safely. The first phase of the docks’ construction,

bet you own something from COS. That fabulous
white shirt, that streamlined bikini, those geometric drop earrings: COS really is the brand for every woman. Functional, well-cut pieces with a clean silhouette never go out of style, and that’s what gives COS its edge.
Karin Gustafsson
The label’s Swedish creative director, Karin Gustafsson, is seriously ‘on-brand’. Blonde, and often pictured in understated yet impeccable neutrals, she has been with COS since its inception in 2006 and studied at the Royal College of Art. “Since the beginning, COS has always stood for offering high-end design and high quality at an affordable price. The words ‘timeless, modern, tactile and functional’ have always been applied to everything we do. We want to offer our customers the best product possible, but we also try to engage them within our shopping environments – from the music we play in-store, to our packaging and window displays, to our lounge areas and even the COS magazine,” Gustafsson says. The brand has grown: It has presence in Singapore, Romania and Canada, to name but a few, and this year celebrates its tenth anniversary. During that time, fashion and design has changed, Gustafsson states. “The fashion world is in a constant state of flux. As new technologies arise, the diverse range of new fabrications and techniques mean we can continue to innovate.” The current COS collection for S/S17 is focused on matching two-pieces, updated to make them more

through the manipulation of functional shapes and form to create surprising and irregular compositions”. She continues, “The design team and I often take trips to galleries and exhibits in London, and I always find it so inspiring. For the S/S17 collection, our inspirations include James Turrell’s Within Without installation, photographer Matthias Heiderich’s body of work, and German sculptor and photographer Thomas Demand’s Model Studies.” As for her favourite designers and artists, the list is long. “Agnes Martin – her use of colour, texture, material and pattern, and the timeless tactility of her work, resonates so highly with COS. “We admired Studio Swine and approached them to be interviewed by Hans-Ulrich Obrist in our A/W16 magazine,” she tells me. The husband and wife duo create furniture and sculptures in a range of materials so beautiful they are art unto themselves. She explains, “It was a natural progression to work with them on this year’s Salone del Mobile (the Milan Furniture Fair) to create the multisensory installation New Spring.” Inspired by the Sakura Festival in Japan, the installation includes a six-metre-high tree-like sculpture. Tubes, or ‘branches’, give off bubbles, which burst and dissolve into mist when touched by skin but linger when touched by a textured fabric. High-tech and futuristic, it is beautiful. Then there’s COS’ collaboration with HAY, which we at Canary Wharf are long-standing fans of. It began, says Gustafsson, “with us using HAY furniture within our stores and studio, and grew organically to selling HAY items within three of our stores and online across Europe”. The COS x HAY collection now features hand-selected pieces for the COS customer.

he intersect between architecture and fashion is not hard to spot. Shoes are nothing
if not mini monuments, and the way clothes move and flow with the body has been drawn and thought out, over and over again. So too with jewellery: shapes can be geometric, lines can be clean, and inspiration can come from buildings, pieces of art and design eras. For Swarovski’s S/S17 collection, entitled Urban Romance, creative director Nathalie Colin wanted to draw on the fact that beauty is often right on our doorsteps. While recent collections have been inspired by the depths of oceans and the vast infiniteness of galaxies, Colin wanted to focus on influences closer to home. As more than 50 per cent of the world’s population live and work in cities, she has examined urban spaces. “I was inspired by both the modern and romantic sides of two cities that I love: Paris where I live and work, and Los Angeles where I often travel for creative inspiration and photo shoots,” Colin says. As always with the most thought-provoking collections, juxtaposition is key. “The romantic side of Paris is expressed through fresh and floral colours and feminine designs,

The perfect day-to-dinner add-on, many are angular and multifaceted, much like the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, while other pieces have been influenced by the Pompidou slopes, twists and turns. As for Los Angeles, Colin describes it as “the source of inspiration for the fluid silhouettes, as well as the palm tree motifs. Every woman can express

Standout pieces include the triangular drop earrings – they’re seriously sharp – and the array of rings; some to be worn as midi and others taking up half your finger. The brand’s signature quatrefoil (or four petal flower) monogram that was first used on its steamer trunks in the 19th century has been refashioned onto necklaces, bracelets and earrings in vibrant new colourways for spring/summer. Malachite, lapis lazuli, turquoise and blush mother-of-pearl are some of the materials that have been used to bring the petals to life. eople often think they know Cartier. Some associate it with its iconic Love bangle, while, for others, it is synonymous with
horological icons such as the Santos or the Tank. Now, the lesser-known aspects of the French house and Louis Cartier, grandson of the founder, will be brought to the fore when the Design Museum opens its new exhibition, Cartier in Motion. The history of the French jeweller will be explored through objects, models and graphics, and the timeline will run from 1875 right through to the present day, charting the influences that helped shape the house into what it is today.

It has been divided into three themes – Paris, the avant-garde and the advent of the wristwatch – but will also consider Cartier’s post-war evolution, advancements in aviation and how this inspired Louis Cartier, and the importance of craftsmanship. “Cartier has an impressive track record of working with museums around the world,” explains Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum. “The house has a remarkable collection, and an intriguing history. But what fascinated me most was to see the way that it continues to make objects that people value at a time when the digital revolution has made so many of the things that we once used to measure our lives redundant.” The exhibition has been designed and curated by renowned British architect Lord Norman Foster. He has not only brought together notable Cartier creations and set them within the artistic, architectural and design contexts of their times, but has also directed a film comprising historical footage, which will form a key part of the display. “Norman Foster is fascinated by the connections between the pioneers of early flight and engineering – Alberto Santos-Dumont, Gustave Eiffel, and Louis Cartier,” says Sudjic.

that Santos-Dumont flew around the Eiffel Tower – will be taking centre stage. “Getting it into the building wasn’t easy,” says Sudjic, wryly. Slightly easier to install was the administrative archives, which contain a goldmine of fascinating information, from the original drawings of key creations to the account books and patents. These sources provide a rare insight into how this now-legendary name did things and lay bare the intimate relationships Louis Cartier had with incredibly influential people, such as the Rothschild family and the Russian tsars.

extraordinary artisans and they set out on their mission to change leather fashion for the better. Inspiration struck when Cahn came across the unique patina and supple texture of a worn baseball glove; luxurious and soft. After that lightbulb moment, his team started to use specific old-world techniques that had been passed down through generations, to create the very first glovetanned leather accessories. And the rest, as they say, is history. The brand still lives and breathes remarkable craftsmanship. To this day, the average Coach bag is made up of approximately 40 to 50 individual pieces of leather that are sewn together, and even the simplest of its bags requires more than 100 steps to assemble. It’s no wonder, then, that the brand

Pinin was a handsome 1980 concept designed by Pininfarina and, reputedly, Enzo Ferrari himself was impressed. But it remained a concept and no production Ferrari has ever had more than two doors. And that makes the car you see here, the Maserati Quattroporte, the next best thing. Once deadly rivals, Maserati and Ferrari are today both owned by Fiat. The factories are virtually within a stone’s throw of one another – Ferrari in Maranello, Maserati in Modena – and the petrol engines that power every Quattroporte are made by Ferrari: horsepower by Prancing Horse, if you will. The Maserati ‘Four Door’ is a rare kind of car. It’s a large and comfortable saloon with genuine sporting pretensions. Mark is a self-taught artist whose love of art started at a very early age, initially trying a variety of different mediums. Aged nine, he came into contact with pastels, which very quickly became his main artistic tool. Pastels can be very messy initially, but that’s what he likes about them: from the uncertainty and messiness, beautiful order can be created. “This piece, Visions of my Sleeping Travels, is a snapshot of a dream I once had, where all of the little blue worms you see were moving on the page...” Instagram: @visions_in_pastel

The new London Living Rent will help middle-income earners save for a deposit by offering below-market rents, based on a third of average local wages. Rents in the County House development are up to 30 per cent cheaper than local market rents and are based on one-third of median gross household income for Bromley.
