EDITOR’S LETTER
From the

“What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.” – Phyllis Diller
A
nyone who’s ever seen the inside of a tequila shot glass knows what I mean by ‘the fear’. That sick, pit-of-your-stomach feeling where you gingerly scan the recesses of your mind for anything that you said or did the night before that will make the morning after even harder. But oh, how much worse that feeling is when the night in question was the office Christmas party – are you in for a ‘stern word’, an all-out verbal colonic or are you simply going to be escorted out of the building when you try to go back? Was it you who broke the photocopier, who stole the office trophy cabinet, who suggested the game of rounders in the boss’s office?! Oh God, the flashbacks. In 2005, a survey said that a whopping 90 per cent of managers had received a complaint of harassment the morning after the work Christmas party. That’s a lot of apology emails. To help you navigate this difficult time of year, we have compiled the main people to stay clear of at the office Christmas bash (page 82), while journalist Mike Peake looks into the dangers of getting too casual with Twitter and Facebook – warning: now is not the time to hashtag your impending sickie (page 79). Of course, Christmas is not just about parties, drinking and general shame, it’s also about giving wonderful, thoughtful gifts to your loved and tolerated ones. Our gift guides (page 34) have been cleverly designed to help you do this to please all the people in your life – guaranteed*, with suggestions for everyone from your neighbour to your other half. And if it all starts to get too much, just remember the wise words of author Garrison Keillor who noted that ‘a lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.’ So eat, drink and be merry and worry about it all in January…

Towards the end of each year three magical things happen in London: the lights in Oxford Street go up, the luxury department stores stage their windows and Claridge’s puts up a very special Christmas tree. Following its tradition of inviting a designer to decorate the tree, this year Dolce & Gabbana were the ones picking the baubles. With the theme of an enchanted forest, the tree is dressed with hundreds of glass spheres hand-painted with sketches of the capital’s landmarks, which are strung above a woodland scene of foxes and deer gathered around a fire. claridges.co.uk

hat’s so interesting? Olga Chernysheva is a resolutely contemporary artist whose work connects the reality of life in modern Moscow with art movements that, while they originated in Russia, went on to dominate Western art. More than simple documentary, her work brings an artistic rigour to the process of understanding a country and people who continue to go through great transition. Chernysheva depicts the remnants of collectivism, once central to
first saw her achieve prominence in the 1990s for her exploration of the ironies and idiosyncrasies to emerge in the aftermath of the collapse of the USSR. A sharp eye for the sociological value of daily life in Russia sees her capturing both the general and specific in her photographs of daily life. In her latest London exhibition her photographs—always taken from behind— depict the variety of winter hat styles she has seen on strangers in Moscow. The different shapes and colours capture the eye and trigger thoughts about individuality and mass culture, highlighting difference in spite of the
“In work that moves between photography, drawing, video and project, Chernysheva provides a unique view of post-Soviet Russia” the Russian experience, and the tensions between that legacy and the new ideologies of individualism and consumerism that permeate Russian life now. In work that moves between photography, drawing, video and project, Chernysheva provides a unique view of post-Soviet Russia, a function of her interest in the everyday street life of her home city of Moscow and the way that she embraces the older artistic tradition of nineteenth-century Russian Realism. Growing up surrounded by the Party’s Socialist Realism, her work now is rejection and response to that impersonal, aggrandising propaganda and its tendency towards conformity and repetition, and often features images that show a society moving further towards consumer-driven individuality. As she says, “I care about closeness. I use visual images of everyday life, as if they were internal voices”. Chernysheva initially studied cinematography at the prestigious Russian State University of Cinematography, Moscow before completing her studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, and her cinematic training is evident in the style that

Inspired by the sense that the phenomena that surround us have created the images that she sees, the timing of this latest London show couldn’t be more important. With recent maneuverings of Putin and Gorbachev’s warnings of the return of the Cold War Chernysheva’s work and understanding of the Russian people and its leadership is now more essential than ever before.
FIND THE WORK Olga Cherneysheva’s latest work will be on show at PACE London from 26th November – 17th January. As well as her exhibition at PACE gallery her work is currently on show at M HKA—Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, an exhibition in which Chernysheva responds to and displays work alongside pieces from the museum’s permanent collection

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Nothing says timeless elegance quite like a Piaget watch. The luxury brand has been creating the finest jewellery watches for the most celebrated women – including Jackie Kennedy and Sophia Loren – since the 1960s and it is a legacy upheld to this day. This year the house is reinventing its iconic Limelight collection once again with a collection of jewellery timepieces inspired by the shape of diamond solitaires. The oval-shaped case of each piece imitates the outline of the classic solitaire diamond, set with one carat of fine diamonds, while the emerald version mirrors the traditional rectangular cut from the house’s fine jewellery collections. Adding the elegant and feminine black satin strap makes this the perfect evening accessory, whether dressed up or pared down. piaget.com

True chromance
Renowned designer Zaha Hadid recently collaborated with jewellery house Azid and Walid Mouzannar on a unique design; this Petal Cuff was hand-crafted using 18-karat white gold and is set with 1,048 white diamonds.
There’s no doubting Solange AzaguryPartridge’s passion for colour and her latest collection, Chromance, is a true testament to this love affair. The kaleidoscopic line includes the Chlorophyll necklace in an intense emerald green and the Spectrum earrings which can be transformed into a necklace for a miraculous day to evening metamorphosis. solange.co.uk
“Our collaboration takes full advantage of Alia’s expertise and Dori’s knowledge to explore the beauty of natural forms and the unique properties of its materials. Alia’s work celebrates materiality and composition in the rich history and traditions of Lebanon’s jewellers...” – Zaha Hadid
Best Shot In a move towards bringing a more contemporary edge to the heritage brand, William & Son has collaborated with award-winning jewellery designer Sarah Ho on a range of cocktail rings. Each of the four pieces (£4,800) draws upon Ho’s signature style as well as her own unique take on the William & Son’s shotgun engraving, creating a perfect blend of the old and the new. Commenting on the collaboration, head of jewellery at William & Son Clémence Mérat said: “Our stories and history are so similar yet so different; working together came very naturally.” With their modern design, they’re the perfect night-time accessory. williamandson.com

La Vie Bohème
Marco Bicego has become well-known for his natural approach to designing jewellery, hand-making each of his pieces in 18-karat gold. The designer has chosen to return to his roots and pay homage to nature in a new collection called Lunaria, inspired by the beautiful Lunaria Annua flower. Comprising necklaces, rings, bracelets and cuffs, each piece features irregular, disc-shaped pods to represent the flower’s seedpods and have been handcrafted using the signature Bullino technique: a special tool gives all of the brand’s pieces their unique fine brushed texture. Prices start from £1,000. Lunaria collection, exclusive to Harvey Nichols; harveynichols.com
Proving that it’s moved on so much from the days when it was known chiefly as a luxury pen brand, Montblanc has released its latest jewellery collection, Bohème. The understated and refined jewellery collection remains very much in keeping with the brand aesthetic and features classic silver and gold pieces that have been created for a sophisticated, discerning woman, including a beautiful gold bangle in pink gold with diamond pavé and a pair of simple silver hoop earrings with white sparkling lacquer. Q&A with… Like a charm In time for Christmas, Harry Winston has launched three new diamond charms, each of which pays tribute to a signature motif of the jewellery house. The Fifth Avenue Vault charm takes inspiration from Harry Winston’s iconic flagship store by featuring a vault door which reveals a hidden surface; this can be engraved with a personal message. Similarly, the Diamond Gates Heart charm reinterprets the New York flagship with round brilliant and baguette-cut diamonds while the Diamond Cluster Heart charm captures the timeless beauty of this enduring design with rows of exquisite brilliant and pear-shaped diamonds. harrywinston.com
Vogue jewellery editor Carol Woolton Carol Woolton’s new book, Floral Jewels, explores how the flower has been a source of inspiration for the world’s leading fine jewellery designers throughout the ages Q: Which jewellery house do you think has captured the flower most accurately? A: Flowers are subject to trends like anything else and I believe there are certain designers who have captured their period. Tiffany’s enamel orchid, for instance, encapsulated the era of the Golden Age in New York and the wealthy industrialists who were vying to have the most exotic hot house. Dior has created a whole collection of flowers for a new generation; they’re bold, exotic, poisonous, lacquered and vibrant. Q: You mention how environmental concerns have resulted in the current trend for wildflowers; could you elaborate on this? A: I think we’re all much more aware of the simplicity of nature and the need to protect it. Meadow flowers like buttercups and primroses, for example, will resonate with people as they realise how important it is that we maintain natural beauty. René Lalique was one of the first to create a fashion for looking at humbler flowers in a way that had never happened before.
Masters of modern jewellery 2014 This year, the ground-breaking jewellery exhibition of 1961, which was curated by Graham Hughes, the art director of Goldsmiths Hall, and credited for kickstarting a wave of jewellery-making talent, has been revived by the Beetles+Huxley Gallery in Mayfair. Taking up Hughes’ mantle, jewellery expert Joanna Hardy curated the show, which opened a month ago and presents jewellery from the Art Deco period to the present day. Alongside beautiful vintage pieces from the 1920s, 30s and 50s by the likes of René Boivin and Louis Boucheron will be contemporary designs by emerging jewellery designers, including Central Saint Martins’ graduate Noor Fares and Monique Daniels. Q: What was the biggest revelation you found when going through the jewellery archives? A: It’s extraordinary when you get to see how scraps of drawings transform into these beautiful three-dimensional objects. The Cartier archive is astonishing; I was privileged enough to see some of the original botanical books that its designers worked from in the 19th century. Q: If you had to base a collection around a flower, which one would you choose? A: I love the hydrangea because it maintains its structure. Most flowers lose their petals and fall apart as they wilt, whereas the hydrangea, even when it’s dying, is still rather beautiful. Q: You have said in the past that often people don’t realise the importance of jewellery; do you think this is changing? A: I think the jewellery industry has completely changed in the last 15 years. Fashion brands which now incorporate jewellery into collections have propelled people towards becoming more adventurous and, in turn, designers too. The industry is more daring, adventurous and fun. Flights of fancy Olivia Sharpe looks
at the coloured diamonds that have caught our imagination this year and yesteryear, and highlights how demand has reached new heights

A
t this year’s Baselworld, Graff unveiled the Hallucination watch. An overnight sensation, its defining feature was not, as one would expect, its complicated Swiss movement nor its astronomical $55 million price tag, but its phantasmagoria of more than 110 carats of exceptionally rare fancy coloured diamonds. The house’s chairman Laurence Graff OBE spent more than two years “scouring the world” in order to procure the stones. For him, the piece represented “the miracle of coloured diamonds” while for us, it revealed that these precious jewels are clearly having a moment. Graff is not the only jeweller to be making headlines. Harry Winston broke records this year for its acquisition of the ‘Winston Blue’. Purchased at Christie’s Geneva auction for approximately $24 million, the 13.22-carat, flawless, Fancy Vivid blue diamond is considered to be the largest of its kind. This managed to trump Laurence Graff’s earlier purchase of a 100.09 carat Fancy Vivid yellow cushion modified brilliant diamond for $16.3 million, a world record for this jewel. And yet, the ‘king of diamonds’ still holds the title of having paid the highest price of any gem or jewel when he bought the ‘Graff Pink’ at Sotheby’s Geneva auction for a phenomenal $46.2 million in 2010. Sales figures show how the value of fancy coloured diamonds has risen dramatically over the past few decades and their demand is now unprecedented, as highlighted by the increased offering of pink, yellow and blue diamonds and the swelling body of consumers willing to pay the hefty prices. Head of jewellery at Christie’s London Keith Penton comments: “Across the board we have seen an increased appetite in the first half of the year for fancy coloured diamonds of the most vivid hues”. This consequently triggered the launch of The Fancy Colour Diamond Foundation at the end of this year, a new research body that monitors the economic value and ethics of the fancy colour diamond industry for both consumers and traders. It also includes a price trend index to measure the incremental value of fancy colour diamonds. . While coloured diamonds have always been sought after, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the market really began to open up, says Laurence Graff. “In the 1980s and in the past five to 10 years, the growth has accelerated as more people have
become aware of their extreme rarity,” he explains. “Increased demand has been coupled with a scarcity of exceptional examples coming onto the market.” The influential businessman – who has bought and sold the most famous diamonds in the world and was awarded an OBE for his services to the jewellery industry in 2013 – has played an instrumental part in stimulating this growth. In 1970, Graff released its now iconic ‘Hair & Jewel’ campaign featuring a model wearing a million dollars’ worth of diamond jewels in her hair. The ostentatious image proved ground-breaking and in turn, illustrated how the jeweller was one step ahead of the game when it came to predicting the current trend for coloured diamonds. In the 1980s, when the very first pink diamonds were discovered at the Argyle Mine in Western Australia, Graff purchased the entire tender and set them into a flower brooch which was then sold to the Sultan of Brunei just hours after it was made. The following decade, the house secured a supply of exquisite yellow diamonds – these have since become its signature stone. So why now has the demand for coloured diamonds reached an all-time high? For Laurence Graff, the answer lies in rarity, an argument that is widely shared by the rest of the industry. “In my experience, quality and rarity are the two factors that most influence collectors,” says Keith Penton. “Compared to other categories, jewellery has the added advantage of being a highly portable asset. In the last few seasons records have continually been broken as competition reaches new heights for the most exceptional items.” According to David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby’s international jewellery division in Europe and the Middle East, the last decade has witnessed large incremental gains in the coloured diamond market due to small supply and increasing demand, and the last three to four years have seen very strong growth for big diamonds of the highest quality, in particular. He notes that globalisation in the last ten years has transformed the market, with collectors from 70 countries bidding in Sotheby’s jewellery auctions worldwide in 2013 and a total of 30 countries represented in the Geneva May 2014 sale. Roughly a third of the auction house’s buyers come from North America, Europe and Asia, with “new buyers making up 24 per cent of the total in 2013, with strong new participation from Asia”. While red diamonds are the rarest in the coloured diamond family, pink diamonds are also reputably scarce. The only significant known source is the Argyle Diamond

collection
Mine, which is owned by Rio Tinto and produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. Due to their rarity (they are the only coloured diamonds whereby the colour is not the result of an impurity but of extreme pressure beneath the earth’s surface), investors are urgently stocking up their supplies before resources are depleted. Calleija is the only Argyle pink diamond atelier in the UK and one of the jeweller’s latest treasures is an unusual but no doubt exquisite Argyle Tender 1.13-carat FIPP heartshaped pink diamond. At this year’s Basel, experts noted how, despite traditional shapes including round brilliants and emerald cuts remaining popular, judging by some of the jewels on display at the trade show, there had clearly been a surge in demand for fancy shapes (Baselworld Daily News, 31 March 2014). The fascination with coloured diamonds has trickled down into the rest of the industry, with jewellers constantly interpreting these stones in new and exciting ways. Along with Calleija, another brand to have fallen for the heart shape is Parisian jeweller Messika; for the first time this year, it introduced a heart-shaped 7-carat pink diamond, fashioned into an exquisite ring. British jeweller David Morris is similarly well-known for using pink diamonds to great effect and in tribute to this, Jeremy Morris created a curated collection of pink diamond haute couture jewellery for the 2014 Biennale des Antiquaires. Although pink diamonds have a wide market, Boodles director and head gemstone buyer Jody Wainwright notes that yellow diamonds remain the most popular when it comes to engagement rings. Celebrities have played their part in this trend, with the likes of Heidi Klum and Adele having famously sported yellow diamond engagement rings. Graff is famous for being the supplier of the largest and rarest Natural yellow diamonds and it demonstrated this at Baselworld 2014 when it unveiled a spectacular yellow and white diamond Fringe necklace. Having taken inspiration from childhood memories of her father Andre (a well-known figure in the diamond trade) playing with precious gems, Valerie Messika has reimagined her Move bangle – originally designed in white diamonds – with three sliding yellow diamonds representing the ‘love of yesterday, today and tomorrow’. The limited edition set of 10 will be available exclusively at Harrods from December. With the industry currently saturated with coloured diamonds, buyers are being drawn to unconventional hues. Hall 3 at Basel was awash with different coloured jewels, from a 2.02 carat green oval at A.A. Rachminov Diamonds to an array of fancy brown diamonds at
Aditya Gems. Oranges, too, proved very popular and Boodles’ Jody Wainwright confides that he was recently on the hunt for a 3-carat vivid orange but has only discovered two stones. However, the diamond expert advocates that fine pinks and blues still make for the best investments, not to mention reds which “are at the top of the tree.” As part of its 2013 Blue Book collection, Tiffany & Co presented a rare brilliant Fancy Vivid green diamond ring. While trends in terms of shape and colour will no doubt evolve, there is one thing which experts are certain will remain constant; the high demand for top quality fancy coloured diamonds. With Christie’s having achieved $154 million for its Geneva auction on 14 May – the highest total ever achieved for a jewellery sale – Keith Penton believes that there “seems to be no slowing down in demand for the best of the best as we commence the second half of the season”. Bird song Being able to call on 276 years of watchmaking history, it’s perhaps no surprise that today Jaquet Droz makes some of the most beautiful timepieces in the world. Its Bird Repeater Open Work is a case in point. On its dial, the remarkable minute repeater features two blue tits feeding their fledglings. As the watch chimes the time, the birds spread their wings, a waterfall tumbles and an egg is hatched. More works of art than mere wristwatches, only eight of the 508-component-comprising creations will be made. Bird Repeater Open Work, from a selection, jaquet-droz.com
ONE TO WATCH This month Sandy Madhvani, Showroom Manager at David M Robinson in Canary Wharf, selects his watch of the moment:
“This year heralded the launch of three new Cellini models – gorgeous dress watches that prove Rolex is as adept at producing pieces for the boardroom as it is for the deep blue sea. The Cellini Dual Time features an elegant sun and moon day/night indicator and will show the time in two separate time zones.” Cellini Dual Time, £12,900, Rolex, available at David M Robinson, Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf
Parmigiani Fleurier has unveiled a red gold version of its Bugatti Super Sport. The watch will feature the Calibre Parmigiani 372, a movement designed along two planes, which has a power reserve of 10 days. Manufacturing every component of its watches itself, Parmigiani only employs external companies for rubies, sapphire crystals and leather straps, which it gets from Hermès. Only 30 of the red gold Bugatti Super Sports will be made. Prepare to part with £185,000 before tax if you want one. parmigiani.ch
Taste for titanium Richard Mille timepieces may have become status symbols for the super-rich, but behind the glamour is a brand dedicated to producing some of the planet’s most high-tech wrist watches. The brand’s most recent invention, the athleticlooking RM 33-01 Automatic, sports Mille’s new skeletonised RMXP3 caliber, which comprises an off-centre platinum micro rotor. The tripartite case, with a diameter of 45.70mm and a thickness of 9.20mm, is mounted on a rubber strap secured with a folding clasp in grade 5 titanium. Water-resistant to 30 meters, the watch will be available from next year in titanium, red gold or white gold. RM 33-01 Automatic, from a selection, richardmille.com

Vice president of men’s product and design at Banana Republic, Michael Anderson explains which pieces all men can rely on What items should all men own? A slim, navy blazer, a great soft-wash tee and a cool pair of sneakers. They go with any kind of pant, whether a dressy trouser, chino or denim. What would you like to see more men wearing? I see a lot of guys in clothes that are a size too big for them, so I continue to encourage guys to at least try a slimmer fit or a size down.

Sir Plus makes clothes out of ‘cabbage’ – a term tailors use to describe the leftover fabric after an order. With it, Sir Plus (get it now?) – makes everything from waistcoats to boxer shorts with Savile Row-quality material, but at a more accessible price. Launching new pieces all the time, this winter our eye’s on The Eastwood dressing gown – silk-soft and with a lining in a Hugh Hefner loungewear shade of claret. Light Line Elton John has put his overwhelming need to accessorise to good use by partnering with Mr Porter to design a capsule travel collection. Calling on five designer friends for assistance, including Tom Dixon for the candle pictured, all proceeds of the limited-edition accessories will be donated to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. mrporter.com
Tell us your big style ‘don’t’. Simply not caring! Put some effort or thoughtful consideration into what you wear and how you put things together. The trick, however, is to make it look effortless. What’s your hero piece from Banana Republic’s winter collection? One must-have for me is the luxe cable button-front sweater. The yarn is incredible, with a mix of greys twisted together, giving a beautiful surface texture. The third piece is our Heritage grey flannel, drawstring slim-fit pant – soft and easy. What trends should we look out for in the spring? The influence of athletic silhouettes and sportswear will continue to define key trends in menswear. The lines are more blurred now than ever and I’m loving the way it carries a mix of sport in both casual and formal. At Banana Republic, for instance, we took the poplin fabric from our soft-wash shirt fabric and made a totally unconstructed blazer, that is extremely light: a true shirt jacket. Banana Republic, Jubilee Place

Red DevilS
Pulling off something bold is all about confidence: no one wants to be the awkward man in the velvet blazer looking like he’s waiting for the rest of his 80s cover band to park. To wear red you need a whiter-than-white, no-frills evening shirt, a bow tie, slim-line black trousers and a jacket in a dusty red or dark burgundy. Overall, there’s something undeniably suave about wearing red – it suggests you’re just stopping off before joining a much more raucous party…

Flower lapel pin, £49.95, Atelier Scotch, oscarmilo.com
Double Bluffing Double-breasted jackets can be considered a little outdated by young men, which is a real shame because the cut’s a classic, grown-up alternative to a regular suit when an event isn’t black tie but you want to make a noticeable effort. If you’re buying for formal wear, opt for six buttons over two or four, and you need it slim on the waist – otherwise if you’re broad you’ll look like a Honda. As a final flourish, one of Atelier Scotch’s flower lapels are just on the right side of dandy.

A touch of cloth You don’t need a big wardrobe to create a lot of looks – just a variety of ties, cardigans and maybe a waistcoat or two. Take accessorising inspiration from Canali, which sent its models down the A/W 14 runway with scarfs tucked into print suits to add a wintry, regal air. When trying this at home, remember velvet, cashmere and silk scarfs will look expensive, whereas woolly, tartan and bright ones will look just plain awful. erasing grace
Game face Rituals… has launched Urban Samurai, a collection of 22 skin and body products. It’s inspired by the ritualistic grooming of Japanese warriors before combat, to create an appearance of power and control. Intended to give modern men the same confidence, its gently foaming bamboo and cedar wood shower gel is refreshing and a dose of TLC all bundled into one – ideal for prepping for the battle of the boardroom when you’re feeling off your game. Samurai Shower Gel, £8.50, Rituals…, Jubilee Place
A ruddy face is a sure sign you fell face first into a bottle of red wine and barely fought your way out. Dry Erase is a moisturiser that specifically reduces redness and irritation. The science behind the formula means it mimics your skin’s natural lipids to trap moisture and reboot the top layer of skin, making you look fresher. If you have the motor function, apply it when you get in before bed to give the formula plenty of time to work. Dry erase ultra-calming face cream, £35, Jack Black, mankind.co.uk
Eyes tired, shut You valiantly tried to keep up with the interns, had your first Jäger Bomb in five years and now your tired, sore eyes are a mirror of the regret you feel inside. Fortunately, this matte Eye Serum deflates next-morning puffiness and reduces dark circles all while fighting ageing over time. Tip: the skin around your eyes is very thin, so apply creams there by blotting or with soft strokes – not clawing motions – if you don’t want to look creased before your years. Anti-fatigue eye serum, £29, ClarinsMen, Boots, Canada Place
Lip Service Dehydration is a huge factor in hangovers, therefore a dry mouth and lips like cracked leather will only make you feel worse. Lip balm is the simplest way to make you look and feel better. This one from Kiehl’s has no-shine, meaning you can apply it throughout the day with nobody the wiser. Lip balm, £9, Kiehl’s, Jubilee Place
roughhousing Because they’re coarser than a regular face wash, scrubs should typically only be used once or twice a week. The rough texture buffs away grime and dead surface cells, waking up the skin underneath. And, considering late nights make you a sponge for impurities, it’s worth getting one if you’re not the type to spend your evenings indoors watching Newsnight with a mug of Ovaltine. This version from Baxter of California is excellent and has a pleasing mix of walnut-shell powder and chamomile. Facial scrub, £17, Baxter of California, nivenandjoshua.com
spray fan A touch of scent can be the final hurdle to making you feel human again. Creed’s new Aventus fragrance has uplifting fruit tones with a finishing punch of leather. Sophisticated but with a touch of playfulness, it’s the choice of a man who’s put together – and the man you’ll hopefully be once again by 2pm when the worst has worn off. Spray directly to the chest from a distance of about six inches (fragrance can stain clothes, so always stick to skin) and use sparingly – spritz too much and your colleagues will know you’ve got something to hide. Christian Bale in American Psycho (2000)
FEATURE
Hello sunshine From the sociopathic Patrick Bateman to the only slightly less troubled Batman, Christian Bale is not a man to shy away from a challenge. This month, as his new film Exodus: Gods and Kings opens in cinemas, we meet the man himself to discuss his fierce reputation, turning 40 and why his new role is his “most barbaric” yet WORDS: Camilla Davies
I
f there’s anyone who can take on the defiant, challenging role of Moses as he rallies 600,000 slaves to rise up against the Egyptian Pharoah Rhamses it’s Christian Bale. His worth ethic alone is biblical: after his breakthrough role as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, he’s become notorious over his 30-year career for absolute investment in his projects. Whether it’s his excessive 28kg weight loss for The Machinist, the viral expletive-ridden putdown directed at a film crew member who interrupted his scene, or his reinvigoration of the Batman franchise – the actor is nothing if not intense. First appearing in TV adverts at just nine years old, Welsh-born, English-identifying Christian Bale’s meteoric rise to film star status occurred just five years later, when Steven Spielberg selected him from 4,000 hopefuls to front Empire of the Sun. A decade on from Bale’s early teen fame, the actor was cast as the now iconic sociopathic serial killer/ banker Patrick Bateman in cult phenomenon American Psycho. His dark portrayal of our consumerist world caused
ripples through the industry at the start of the millennium, and the actor has since gained a fierce reputation for utterly inhabiting his roles. The Fighter earned Bale a Best Actor Academy award in 2010, followed by an Oscar
“As a man you are meant to be ambitious, I am meant to be pursuing my career all the time” nomination for Best Actor for last year’s American Hustle. Bale might be a major-league Hollywood player, but he pointedly avoids the fuss and spectacle that comes hand in hand with his profession. Which begs the question; if Spielberg hadn’t hired a young Bale to star in Empire of the Sun, just where would he be now? “I dream where I would be and sometimes I think I would be Marc Márquez winning the MotoGP,” the self-confessed petrol-head laughs. “I did very badly in
CANARY WHARF | 49
school, I had no potential for college, I had been done for shoplifting, and that was even with the hope of a film career,” he says. “So without having acting, I don’t know what the hell I would have gotten up to, other than doing a nine-to-five job.” Initially fame-shy, Bale shirked the industry after his teenage breakthrough and it was Kenneth Branagh who teased him back into acting with 1989’s Henry V. “I would have probably been in sales,” he says when asked about his Plan B, although it is somehow hard to imagine him cold-calling clients with that unmistakable ‘Batman’ voice. As it is, Bale takes his profession very seriously. He’s memorably transformed his body for a plethora of roles, becoming almost skeletal to play insomniac Trevor Reznik in The Machinist, before determinedly hitting the gym to play muscular Bruce Wayne/Batman. 2013’s American Hustle even saw Bale establish a barrel like
“I do believe in the idea of you can push it as far as you can go. I mean, why not?” belly to become Seventies con-artist Irving Rosenfeld. With each physical transformation, health professionals fretted over his changing shape, but Bale is a man who gives everything for his art. “First off, I don’t even know if it’s art,” Bale starts. “Secondly, not everything, but I do believe in the idea of you can push it as far as you can go. I mean, why not? The only thing that I’m in control of is that, because I can’t control the movie as far as if it’s going to be any good or not. “I can’t control which takes the editor and director pick. I’ve got no say-so over anything in terms of that stuff. All I can do is go, ‘Hey, here I am,’ and the small amount of control I have is over the character I’m playing. I just like really pushing it. To me that’s worthwhile and fun.” As far as Bale is concerned, ‘worthwhile’ takes precedence. He reserves his ‘pushing it’ for showreel performances rather than going out and partying with the rest of the Hollywood elite. And aside from the drama with his mother and sister occasionally resurfacing – there was an incident at The Dorchester hotel in 2008 that has resulted in him no longer speaking to his family – Bale retains a low- key life. A married father of two, for the most part he’s avoided the ill-fated child star aura that surrounds the likes of Macaulay Culkin and Drew Barrymore. “I recognised really quickly that I didn’t like [fame],” Bale explains. “I didn’t want to be known at all, I didn’t From top: Christian Bale in Batman Begins (2005); in Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014); The Machinist (2004)
FEATURE
want to be doing press and stuff like that and seeing the effect it had upon my family. And yeah, I did have responsibilities that I wouldn’t wish upon my children, my nieces, anybody at all. That just comes with the territory when you are suddenly earning money, and what do you do when you are loyal? You’ve got to help people out, and then it becomes a point where you’ve got to keep doing that and it becomes the norm. Suddenly you’re lost.” The fame game might seem like fun from the outside, but when his friends were at school, Bale was earning his daily bread. “At 13, that’s it; you are working full-time to provide for others and obviously that’s troubling. I would look at anyone else in that situation and say that’s very troubling. You shouldn’t be there. But for me it was always recognising that I loved doing the actual work. And as long as I stuck with that, then it was going to come good.” It’s certainly done that. Bale’s latest role in Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings will see him portray Moses, guiding the slaves on a passage from plagueridden Egypt, although he insists he was hardly expecting the call from the Gladiator director: “I said: ‘Me as Moses?!’” he laughs, yet apparently Scott saw the actor as the epitome of Moses. “I don’t know that that’s a compliment, because I think Moses was slightly schizophrenic, and was one of the most barbaric individuals that I’ve ever read about in my life,” says Bale. “Now we don’t broach all of that in the film and I respect completely that he is the major prophet in Judaism, and a major prophet in Islam and Christianity, and the story is one which is just beyond resonant in human history. But the man was an absolute contradiction. I mean, he did phenomenal things – and it’s a story of revolution…” It’s not every actor who can assume the role of Batman, Moses and a born-again Christian preacher [I’m Not There] over the space of just a few years, but despite attending his fair share of awards ceremonies, he is ever the pragmatist. “Let me talk about myself in terms of having expectations about ambition. As a man you are meant to be ambitious, and just looking at my career, I am meant to be pursuing that all the time. Well, I have done that a lot and I can go, well I have got a daughter, I have got a newborn son, and for me right now, being a powerful man is being able to say I am doing nothing but spending time with my family.” Closing the conversation with the steely mantra of “It’s being able to choose what you choose to do, not what you feel other people expect you to do,” it appears that for the foreseeable future, we can expect the unexpected from Christian Bale. Exodus: Gods and Kings is in cinemas from 26 December From top: Christian Bale in American Hustle (2013); in American Psycho (2000); in American Hustle (2013)

Can you really change your body in just three months? Newly launched Canary Wharf gym No.1 Fitness is certain that you can Words: Elle Blakeman
T
his is not my first rodeo. I’ve been whipped into a sweat by more trainers than you’ve had hot dinners. Unfortunately, hot dinners – and the accompanying wine – are exactly my problem and despite an expensive gym membership and the finest work-out wardrobe that NASA science can design (seriously – the new Nike x Pedro Lourenço Collection is a feat of engineering), I remain a stubborn 10lbs over my ideal weight. Harry at No.1 comes with high credentials – several high-profile models and singers come here (sorry but I’ve been sworn to secrecy), plus half of the City and even Gok Wan. Last year, when Men’s Health set out to look for the UK’s Champion Trainer, No.1 Fitness’ Ben Camara, beat over 700 other hopefuls to win best transformation in 12 weeks. The before and after picture hangs proudly in the gym and if it wasn’t verified to within an inch of its life I would swear it was Photoshopped. To begin with a set of rules – mine: I don’t run; I won’t stop drinking (blame the job or the Irish relatives but it’s best to be upfront); I will get frustrated. Incredibly, Harry accepts these pretty easily and I can confirm that in three months I was not made to run once. In fact, there’s no cardio at all – it’s all free weights and body weight exercises – I don’t even need to feel bad about it as Harry tells me that running is one of the least effective calorie burners on the market. Obviously he’d prefer I didn’t drink, but it’s not a deal breaker – I just have to accept that the results won’t be as quick as they could be – so we agree that I will try to cut it down, and go at least three nights a week without touching a glass, which is the best I can offer. The first session flies by in a whirl of introducing me to the weights section of the gym (an area I thought was XY chromosomes only) and showing me how to do a proper lunge. The difference that discovering weights makes to my figure is nothing short of miraculous. Halfway through the third week I buy training gloves due to all the weights after I realise that my hands are starting to look like they belong in prison. Strangely this pleases me. The best thing about this training is that it stops the conversation in my head. You know the one: “I really
should go to the gym. I will. I will go to the gym. But, I’m tired and also it’s dark. I’ll go tomorrow…” Having a trainer reduces this conversation to “I’m going to the gym.” All around the room are posters or people, mostly of men, who have completely reshaped their bodies in a matter of weeks – skinny arms, beer guts, generally out of shape people turned into Greek Adonis’ with ten packs and serious arms. There is one of a girl (women being less inclined to be photographed in gym wear), who goes from slim but not particularly toned to the most perfect arm-to-back ratio. I would enter rooms backwards if I looked like that. And on that note, this experience revealed my back to be nowhere near the fighting shape I imagined. Harry suggests that we take photos every week to track progress and stay motivated and by God does it work. After the first set I was so horrified I vowed to do whatever I’m told in this gym. The worst were the ones of my back which I thought I had no problem with (I had assumed it looked something like Gisele’s on the Chanel No.5 ad – I don’t know why, just had no reason not to), but now I can see that this out of sight body part has betrayed me, that it has, in fact, been snacking behind me, presumably on sausage rolls and other Iceland party food. It’s not a good look. And we live in a backless dress age. Backs matter! Week after week, I expect this Gisele image to appear – it doesn’t quite – but Harry’s right, these pictures do inspire me to keep on it. They also do show that I’m getting somewhere even when I feel like I’m not. The next six weeks are a roll call of stretches, squats, lunges, weights and more lunges. If there’s a way to move holding a 9kg ball that I haven’t tried I’d like to hear it. Short of eating it, there is nothing more I can do, we are war buddies that cling to each other when things get tough. Harry has me hopping, jumping, pushing a ‘prowler’ (don’t ask) up and down a gym hall. Nothing is the same and the pattern is such that I can’t guess it – which is good, as then I might think about it. I just get on with it as Harry stands next to me, either distracting me with general chat or encouragingly telling me that I’ve “got this”. Under Harry’s careful tutelage, I am wonderwoman! It’s amazing how your attitude changes once you silence that negative voice in your head. I go from someone who would laugh if

you told me to do a press up to someone who can handle a set of ten almost without swearing. By the start of week seven I begin to notice some real changes – I have the start of a line on my stomach – an ab! I’ve read about these! This is what the members of 5ive had before they came back ten years later as an amusingly named foursome. Over the next week it gets more defined and I have to stop myself lifting my T-shirt and showing people. On several occasions I can’t and it leads to some pretty awkward moments in the staff kitchen. However I still have that annoying ‘wine belt’ which isn’t budging. Probably because my weekly wine consumption hasn’t changed. In fact, while I feel fitter and stronger, I had hoped to be supermodel hot by now. That’s how this works right? Harry asks if I’ve been sticking to the guidelines created by his nutritionist? (Who is excellent by the way). Er… Right – well there’s your answer. My eating is a little better, but I still cave at the sight of a Pret BLT at least once a week. Plus the odd Starbucks muffin, and, well you see where this is going. Harry recommends a food delivery service – Fitness Fresh Food – not only will this take away any danger of slipping into Pret or inhaling 13 canapés at a work event – but it will actually help repair and rebuild my body after all of the exercise I am putting it through. I often forget food actually serves a purpose rather than to just taste nice and give you something to do. That the right food can totally change how you feel, how you sleep, train, everything. I do some research and decide that FFF is definitely the way to go – unlike any of the others I read about, it is the only one that really focuses on training rather than weight loss. Of course they have a celeb following – Spencer and Binky from Made in Chelsea (that swung it for me – have you seen the body on that girl?!) – but they also supply several world-class professional athletes. My first delivery comes and it’s huge – I was expecting half a bowl of bircher muesli and some nuts to get me through to lunch but a huge portion of eggs, salmon and chicken arrives. Forgot starving, I’m eating loads.

I worry that it’s too much (if I put on weight after all this there will be hell to pay), but Harry assures me that it’s fine – that you can eat a lot and tone up, as long as it’s the right food of course. Jared at FFF is brilliant and stays in touch throughout to check I’m enjoying the food (which I really am) and monitoring the macros and nutrients and all that other stuff I don’t really have room in my head for but I’m so glad someone else does. Week eight is a revelation – my arms and muscles are defined and my stomach is consistently toned now – the kind of toned I used to have to suck my breath in till near exhaustion for. The food and exercise combined is
“Week eight is a revelation – my arms and muscles are defined and my stomach is consistently toned” working wonders and once I start to see real changes in my body, things become much easier to stick to. The last couple of weeks fly by – and (whisper it) I’m actually starting to enjoy myself. I get some nice gym wear and start to feel better about pretty much everything in life – it’s amazing how everything starts falling into place. I’m sleeping better and have better concentration – I can see why No.1 has targeted the banking communities – with gyms in Tower Hill, the City and now Canary Wharf, Harry is homing in on the people who need him the most. By week ten I have lost 9lbs and a full dress size. But more importantly I have gained muscle and definition in places that I had completely given up on – my arms, thighs and core. Best of all I can finally wear a backless dress again. Thank God for that. Six-week transformation packages start from £605. No 1 Fitness is a bespoke, results driven Personal Training service, run by award-winning Ben Camara (Men’s Health Trainer of the Year) and Harry Thomas. Getting Carded A bad business card is a lingering, limp handshake in the business world. Teresa Pereira, VP of brand and communications at online printing and design company MOO, tells Canary Wharf how to make your cards work for you. Do: Consider the texture of your cards. If you want a luxurious feel, invest and opt for a thicker weight. Think about how you dress to impress and apply that feeling to your cards. Do: When it comes to design, less is more. Tell people only what you need to tell them and then stop. When you have eight lines of text on your card, it looks cluttered. Keep it modern and classic and you will instantly look professional. Do: Add interest by playing with the shape of your cards – square business cards, or our MiniCards can help you to literally stand out in a pack of cards. Don’t: Compromise a good design by settling for poor-quality print and paper: you wouldn’t invest in a Jaguar and then have cloth seats. Do your research and ask for recommendations before you commit.

One To Read With Christmas being a good time to catch up on the books you never made time for, pick up Drive by Daniel H. Pink. It caused a stir when it first came out in 2009 by arguing that it’s people’s need to be in charge of their own lives that drives them to strive for success, rather than just making money. Binning
the ‘carrot and stick’ method as outdated, Pink argues that in the modern world there is an intrinsic need to learn and create, and do good for others. If you can feel your eyebrows rising, bear in mind that Pink draws on decades of scientific research, and he also pinpoints which big corporations are instigating new methods of incentivising to raise revenue. Eye-opening to say the least, Drive has become a respected work in modern business. Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, £7.99, by Daniel H. n August of this year, a nurse from the north west of England was suspended by her employers when they discovered that she’d been fired from her previous job. The reason she’d been let go several years earlier was because of “inappropriate and derogatory” comments she’d made about her bosses on Facebook (and which she had, naturally, failed to mention when applying for the new position). In short, those ancient Facebook postings had derailed her career not once, but twice, because the nurse felt compelled to resign amidst the second furore. When she next applies for a job, the issue will probably arise again. And again – following her round like an unfortunate smell for the rest of her life. It’s not a problem that would have arisen 20 or even 10 years ago, but today our ‘personal brand’ – that disconcertingly nebulous entity which exists for each of us online – is something that career-minded people have to consider every time they post something online. Careful management of your online brand is as vital to your future success as a killer CV and talking to the right people at the water cooler. Jasmine Sandler (jasminesandler.com) is a personal online branding consultant and helps people to create the right impression online. She claims that when handled correctly, personal branding can work wonders for your reputation and, ultimately, your career. “All content related to your personal brand online is important,” she says, “whether that’s a comment, a blog post or anything else. “Status updates can build or destroy your reputation. It is critical for anyone looking to deliver trust and credibility to continually monitor and manage their personal brand.” Dan Schawbel, another personal branding expert (millennialbranding.com) agrees: “What you post online is a reflection of you: it holds your reputation and is your permanent record.” Dan’s not over-egging it – permanent is the operative word, and it’s something that Mary Beard, the noted TV historian, was motivated by when she generously decided to befriend – and ultimately give a job reference to – a young man who was internationally vilified when he trolled her on Twitter. “He’s going to find it very hard to get a job,” she said, “because as soon as you Google his name it all comes up.” The obvious, then, is to avoid inflammatory comments on Twitter; to not post snapshots to Facebook of boozy nights out. The old adage ‘if you wouldn’t shout it out or show it to a room full of strangers don’t post it’ still rings true. But knowing exactly where to draw the line is often the problem. Is a CEO posting pictures of last night’s dinner

fun and quirky – or deeply unprofessional? Does it largely depend on the company and, to an extent, the individual? Jasmine Sandler thinks not. She says that nothing should get in the way of “continually supporting a professional image.” And that’s a philosophy, she says, which applies to everyone who wants a long and productive career – from the Managing Director to the intern.
use when they think of you?” The answer to controlling your personal brand, then, seems to be a clever blend of caution and proactivity. Don’t post anything you shouldn’t; do ensure that you have a strong online presence that makes you look good. ‘A young employee who boasted of his impending ‘sickie’ on Facebook… only to get a reply from his bosses saying he was fired’ Facebook and Twitter certainly have a lot to answer for. Stories of people being caught out by their updates are legion – such as the one about the young Australian employee who boasted of his impending ‘sickie’… only to get a reply from his bosses saying he was fired. A newspaper story this summer revealed how hundreds of British police staff had been investigated for Facebook misuse, whilst even more recently, the Swiss parliament was rocked by a scandal in which a parliamentary secretary was found to have posted naked ‘office selfies’ of herself on Twitter. To say that these shots will hover over her head forever is something of an understatement: great news if her ‘personal brand’ is based around a new career in adult entertainment, less so if she was hoping to forge ahead in politics. But even small mistakes made online can seem all too public, causing embarrassment for untold thousands – as evidenced by the mad rush from red-faced individuals earlier this year when Google announced that they now had the right to be removed from search results under a new EUbacked ‘right to be forgotten’ ruling. It’s a start, but it’s far from perfect. Better not to mess up in the first place. For the HR departments, of course, social media has become the ultimate filtering tool. Business website Investopedia claims that 30 per cent of employers use Facebook to screen candidates; add to that a quick search of your LinkedIn profile, your Twitter account and a general Google search for your name, and the investigative HR professional could have a pretty comprehensive picture of you – be that good or bad – in seconds. And the hirers do take notice: writing in The Guardian, Jaleh Bisharat, senior VP at oDesk, says she uses Facebook to hone in on which candidates to interview, explaining how personal branding online helps to create a telling snapshot of who someone is. “Think of the shortcuts your mind uses with people you don’t know well,” she says. “The hacker. The brilliant scientist. What mental shortcut should people
your brand becomes instantly recognisable; Jasmine Sandler suggests making sure that your name, photo and work profile follow you everywhere online. “When done right, this sends positive signals to major search engines,” she says – so if someone’s looking for a senior programmer on LinkedIn, by consistently anchoring your name and photo to that job title you’ll be more visible to the right kind of people. Finally, just when you think you’ve got your personal branding down to a tee, don’t let your guard down by sending off ill thought-out emails from a work computer. According to former HR executive Cynthia Shapiro, companies even monitor employees’ emails because it “provides a window into an employee’s attitude.” Oops. You were only kidding about that lousy bonus, weren’t you? The virtual voodoo doll of your boss which you email to your workmates is just for fun, right? Here’s hoping your bosses can take a joke…
Your brand and you: top tips 1. Don’t post anything that has even the remotest chance of coming back to haunt you. Remember the acronym FACS: Flesh, Alcohol, Controversial and Swearing are all out. 2. Consider having a ‘public’ Facebook profile on which you present a clean and professional image, and a separate – rigidly private – one to share with true friends. 3. Make LinkedIn work for you with a good picture, full work history and lots of endorsements. Endorse other people and they’ll usually do the same for you.

It’s beginning to look a O h sure, the office Christmas party might sound like a social enough event, a nice little reward for all those late nights, endless meetings and putting up with weird John all year, but don’t be fooled – this ‘party’ is actually a minefield of potential issues, dramas and all-out career suicide.
In 2005, a survey conducted by Peninsula Legal Services found that almost 90 per cent of employers had received a complaint of harassment following an office party – that’s a hell of a lot of awkward Monday mornings. If you’d like to get through the festive season with your job and dignity intact, then take note of the main people to avoid…
The office flirt You know the type: at work it’s all double entendres and “While you’re down there love” every time you drop your pen, but add some alcohol and Beyoncé to the mix and it’s a different ball game. Just remember – you think you’re being subtle – you’re not, and yes everyone knows what you’re up to. Words: Elle Blakeman; Illustrations: Amy Welch

lot like a disciplinary
HR You think you’re being friendly but five drinks in and swearing about “that cow in sales” will not help advance your career. Neither will telling her your reason for stealing pens every time someone upsets you.
The internS Those wide-eye grads so ready to learn – these upstarts will either be intent on telling you their five-, ten- and 15-year plan, including house, babies and of course dedication to the firm, or will try and prove their salt by going drink for drink with the 18-stone rugby player from Accounts – keep your distance.
The Boss Think of the boss like Cinderella – possessing an immovable curfew with disastrous consequences post-midnight. If you stick to talking to the Boss pre-9pm, you’re far less likely to think he’s going to love that story involving handcuffs, Amsterdam and some questionable life decisions…
The drunk girl It is a truth universally acknowledged that you cannot have an office party without a drunk girl crying in the corner. Whether it’s her ruined new dress or a fight with her boyfriend, you can bet your bottom dollar that this chick will alternate between telling you how connected she feels to you while spilling her drink all over you in the process, and wild, borderline dangerous dancing while shouting “this song is SO about me”. Avoid.
The Accountants Just generally.

A Season of Bangla Drama Once again, Canary Wharf Group was a proud sponsor of A Season of Bangla Drama. This month-long extravaganza celebrated the rich culture and heritage of the Bangla community in Tower Hamlets. Organised by Tower Hamlets Council and, for the second year partnered with the Queen Mary University Drama department, events were shown at the University’s campus as well as in several local venues. The programme explored a wide variety of topics and issues and included a Bangla adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. It also provided local up-andcoming Bangla writers, directors and performers with a chance to exhibit their talents. In describing the festival, Ali Campbell the co-curator and Reader in Applied Performance at Queen Mary University’s Drama Department, stated that he considered it to be: “An increasingly vital part of the cultural fabric of East London”.

Canary Wharf Community Champions
On Tuesday 11 November, a large crowd gathered in Canary Wharf to witness an event that remembered and commemorated the brave individuals who have risked their lives for our freedom in all conflicts since the First World War. Canary Wharf Group, HSBC, Barclays and The Afghanistan Trust came together with the Canary Wharf Multi Faith Chaplaincy to remember those involved in conflicts, past and present, in the year of the 100th anniversary of the First World War. More than 1,000 people attended a short ceremony to observe the twominute silence at 11am with readings from the Chaplains, Colour Sergeant Daz Fuller from the second battalion, and the Parachute Regiment, with a bugler playing The Last Post and Reveille.
On Thursday 30 October, Canary Wharf Group hosted its first ever Community Champions Awards. Held at Level39, Europe’s largest fintech accelerator space at Canary Wharf, this unique event recognised and celebrated the voluntary work of individuals from within the local community. Each person was presented with a framed certificate signed by Sir George Iacobescu CBE, Canary Wharf Group’s chairman and chief executive officer, along with £250 to donate to a community organisation of their choice. This award celebrated the fantastic achievements of ten local heroes, all of whom have their own unique and inspiring story. Zakir Khan, head of community affairs at Canary Wharf Group said: “As a company we very rightly regularly celebrate the achievements of young people but realise there are long-standing and committed members of our community who are often overlooked. The Community Champions ceremony provided an opportunity to highlight and acknowledge the contribution of these individuals Derek Spicer is presented his award by Zakir Khan, head of community affairs at Canary Wharf Group. and show our appreciation.”

The capital’s newest classic car show is opening its doors at ExCel London this January, and with it the opportunity to admire, adore and own one of history’s finest motors
ondon is home to a thriving network of classic car dealerships and enthusiasts. The trend for investing in classic cars is on the rise, with old motors seeing a renaissance of late with buyers appreciating their rising worth and timeless style. Celebrating the cars’ revival, the team behind the hugely successful Top Gear Live is celebrating the country’s passion for motors by hosting the new London Classic Car Show at ExCel London on 8 – 11 January 2015. The centrepiece of the event will be The Grand Avenue, a motorised catwalk that will transform the show from a static exhibition into a moving experience. Operating at regular intervals throughout the four days, The Grand Avenue will feature 40 cars which have been handpicked to illustrate the story of the classic car. The 40 chosen range from a 1904 Lagonda Tricar to the ex-James Hunt McLaren M23 via a dramatic Lancia Stratos. Also lined up are the Maserati 250F that Stirling Moss used to win the 1956 Monaco GP, the ex-Elio de Angelis Lotus and a Jaguar C-type, originally owned by five times World F1 Champion Juan Manuel Fangio. The Grand Avenue will also give visitors the chance to enjoy the rare sight of a 1920 Jaguar SS1 in action alongside a 1924 Bugatti, while other significant cars include a 1948 Land Rover, one of the first ever made, and a pre-production Range Rover from the 1970s. Visitors can also expect to see and hear such mouth-
watering machinery as a Gullwing Mercedes (pictured), a 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa and a Lamborghini Muira S from the 1960s. For those who can’t wait, a preview night takes place on 8 January that will see the official opening of The Grand Avenue and the launch of Top Gear presenter James May’s own contribution, Cars that Changed the World. The latter being a debate-inducing exhibition of twelve cars May has humorously grouped into the categories ‘The Hall of Obviousness’ and ‘The Corridors of Bloody Mindedness’. A thirteenth, secret car will be unveiled on the night as the winning motor which – in his opinion – has made the greatest historic impact. Another celebrity face will be TV star and applauded chef James Martin, who will not only be overseeing the pop-up Classic Car Café as it serves up good, honest food to the crowds, but who will also be hosting an exhibit of his very own. A man whose passion for cooking is only rivalled for his love of vehicles, Martin will be displaying his private collection of classics, which includes old Minis, a Ford Mustang and a pair of Ferraris – a 275GTB and a Testarossa to be precise. If you’re not already a car enthusiast prepare to develop a new obsession at this unique, unmissable event. Goodwood: powered by BMW Fancy a spin around Lord March’s grand Sussex estate? Grab a BMW and head over to Goodwood WORDS: Matthew Carter
M
ercedes has Brooklands, Porsche has Silverstone... and now a third German manufacturer, BMW, can boast an allegiance with a UK racetrack for its driving experience programme. Ultimate Driving at Goodwood, based at Lord March’s estate in Sussex, will give punters unique access to the famous Goodwood circuit, home of the annual Revival meeting, and a whole lot more besides. There are four key elements to the new BMW and Goodwood collaboration: Adventure, Performance, Academy and Ultimate. Adventure and Performance are the two of most interest to enthusiasts. Adventure uses BMW X3 and X5 4x4 models over a specially built 32-mile off-road course using the forests, hillsides and chalk pits of the 12,000-acre Goodwood estate. Performance is based at the circuit and uses a range of M cars, including M3, M4 and M5 plus the Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo. The package comes complete with expert tuition from experienced instructors, so that your
first few ragged attempts will be transformed into fast, flowing laps by the end of the day. Rather like Mercedes with its Driving Academy at Brooklands, BMW hasn’t forgotten the next generation of drivers. The BMW Academy gives under-17s the chance to drive a MiniCooper around the circuit, while over-17s can master high-speed driving and car control at the track. Ultimate, meanwhile, allows customers to put together their own package, combining their preferred elements from Adventure, Performance and Academy. Lord March said: “Ultimate Driving at Goodwood creates a fusion of skills and expertise that will provide a truly exceptional new experience. With expert tuition at the Motor Circuit to help improve driving skills in some fabulous cars, and a challenging off-road course encompassing areas of the Estate that few have seen before, this will be a more hands-on activity than anything done before.” For times and booking information please visit goodwood.com

Premiership performer
T
It might not be the most powerful Bentley Continental GT on offer, but the V8 S is easily the best, says Matthew Carter
here are so many compelling sides to this Bentley that it’s difficult to know where to start. Do I talk about the noise, the glorious deep bass growl it spits out of the twin figure-of-eight oval exhaust pipes whenever the accelerator is used with a modicum of enthusiasm? Perhaps I should focus on the neck-snapping acceleration. This is a big, heavy car yet it will hurl itself to 60mph from rest in a smidge over four seconds… there are out-and-out sports cars than can’t do that. Then there’s the remarkable amount of grip. The Continental GT has four-wheel drive and, once again despite its bulk, it can be hurled around with surprising confidence. And, of course, when it’s not behaving like a hooligan, there’s the incredible comfort, refinement and sheer presence of the car. Even though the basic shape has been around for more than a decade (the first generation was launched in 2003) and has become a familiar sight in Premiership cities, it has still gathered a crowd whenever it was parked up.
But in many ways the most impressive thing about this Bentley is the way it performs not just against the clock but also at the pumps. Accelerate hard and the instant readout will still show a wallet-punishing four-pointsomething mpg, but my average fuel consumption finished in the mid-20s. And I wasn’t treating my time with the car as an economy run. OK, so if you can afford the £139k asked for the car – actually ‘mine’ cost almost £180,000, coming as it did with an eye-watering £41,000 of extras – you probably won’t be too concerned about its thirst for fuel. But this is about more than just saving a few pennies at the pumps. This reflects the way the industry is responding to environmental concerns and, while the Bentley’s CO2 emissions of 246 g/kms won’t get you a free pass into Boris’ London, it’s hugely better than was achieved even a couple of years ago. It’s down to Volkswagen, owners of Bentley since 1998. The 4.0-litre V8 engine was developed by Audi and therefore bristles with advanced technology designed not just to make the car go as fast as possible, but also as efficient as possible.
motoring
In performance mode, for example, it’s a full fat V8 with a suitable heavy-metal thunder soundtrack (actually the Sports Exhaust is a £1,860 option, but if you have an ounce of high-octane fuel in your blood, that’s money well-spent). But when cruising, the clever stuff starts to kick in. The engine incorporates what Bentley calls variable displacement. That’s to say that when you don’t need all eight cylinders pumping away, four of them are shut down, turning it into a 2.0-litre four cylinder. Not that you’d notice from behind the wheel. As soon as you reach cruising speed, the engine quietly cuts half its cylinders. But as soon as you touch the throttle again, those dormant four cylinders unobtrusively spring back into life. If you didn’t know it was happening, you’d be none the wiser… until, that is, it came to filling up. Bentley reckons that each tank can provide a range of as much as 500 miles, meaning the Continental GT really does live up to its billing… it is possibly the perfect continental grand tourer around. It is also easily the best of the three regular Conti Coupés offered by Bentley. At the top of the range is the W12, powered by a gargantuan twin turbo 6-litre developing 567hp and providing creamy-smooth performance along with the thirst of a dipsomaniac. At the bottom of the range is the ‘ordinary’ V8, which develops a perfectly adequate 500hp. But the V8 S, with 521hp, offers the best of everything. Don’t just take my word for it. Talk to a Bentley high-up off the record and he (or she) will agree that few need the W12 when the V8 S is this good. To match its greater power, the S has a more sporting chassis set-up than the V8. It’s been lowered by 10mm, has stiffer springs and revised damping for a more responsive drive. Its electronic systems have been optimised for more sporting performance and the steering recalibrated to give better feedback. There’s also a raft of body add-ons – a front splitter, rear diffuser and extended side sills – that add an air of menace without being too vulgar. Just about. The result is as close to a sports car as Bentley gets, not quite as involving as a Porsche 911, say, but not half bad. As we have seen, of those 40 grand of extras – the
equivalent of a VW Golf R and a VW Up for goodness sake – some are worth the money, but some are of more dubious value. And some, frankly, should be standard anyway: if Nissan can provide a rear-facing camera as standard on a £17k Juke, then Bentley really ought to be able to do the same on a £139k V8 S, especially as visibility out of the coupé isn’t brilliant when reversing. As it is, they want another £910 so you can see where you’re going. I also question whether it’s worth paying £480 to have the door mirror caps painted in a contrasting colour to the body – in this case ‘Beluga Gloss’ (black to you and me) over the £3,300 optional ‘Ice’ (that’s white) body colour. But the biggest option on the test car was the £6,325 worth of Mulliner Driving Specification which adds little to the driving experience but gives you dramatic 21in wheels, drilled alloy pedals and, something of an acquired taste, a diamond quilted perforatedleather interior. And talking of taste, among the available body colours is a startling Monaco Yellow. Oh to hell with it: if you’ve got the cash, flaunt it.

Ever since the word quinoa was graffitied in a skate park, it was clear that food trends are a seriously hot topic. Here, we look at the top trends that made their mark this year WORDS: melissa emerson
at your convenience The newly released Great British Public Toilet Map’s research indicates an alarming lack of public loos in the UK, and we think one of this year’s most bizarre trends might give a clue as to why: a number of former water closets are being cleaned up and transformed into places fit to eat your dinner off, literally. WC in Clapham is a wine and charcuterie bar housed in a 100-yearold former public lavatory below Clapham Common tube station. Take a seat between the old urinal partitions to dine on high-brow fare from oysters to wild boar salami, or visit The Convenience in Hackney with its rotating chef residencies. off-putting restaurant names Slabs, the Marylebone restaurant that sounded more like a mortuary than somewhere you’d go on a date, closed this year after a fairly short-lived existence. You might assume its lack of shelf life was due to its brave (or foolish) choice of name, but other restaurants with equally unappetising names actually have a somewhat cult following, including as Flesh and Buns, Bone Daddies, Dirty Bones, and Meat and Shake – clearly this was the year we all learned not to judge a book by its cover. fleshandbuns.com; dirty-bones.com; meatandshake.com

tv dinners As a nation of Netflix addicts, we can’t get enough of Walter White and Piper Chapman (from Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black respectively if you’ve been hiding in a cave somewhere). Shows about drugs, crime and prison don’t automatically scream fine dining or have the appeal of Nigella, but these two cult shows now have accompanying cookbooks, because you always need to know how to serve up Blue Meth Crunch or Piper’s Burrata Sandwich for your dinner guests. Recipes in Orange is the New Black’s tome are appetisingly photographed on prison trays while Baking Bad by Walter Wheat’s ideas are inspired by the most iconic and gruesome moments season-by-season.

the Hybrid
The Frankenstein of desserts, the trademarked Cronut (a croissant-doughnut hybrid) has spawned many copycat versions since the original was born in New York. Having now made it big this side of the ocean, its alter egos range from Cocomaya’s CocoDough’s to Aubaine’s gooey Nutella Crobaines. The humble donut’s status has officially gone from greasy to gourmet – Cocomaya’s Superfood flavour is almost worthy of afternoon tea-status with its pink berry-topped icing. cocomaya.co.uk; aubaine.co.uk

Raising the steaks Gaucho Canary Wharf are already the go-to on the steak front. But what happens when you try and build on a classic formula? WORDS: ELLE BLAKEMAN
T
hey say you can count the number of true friends you have on one hand – not those who pad out the Christmas card list, but the ones who would be there for you if you got arrested. For something really embarrassing like streaking or punching Bono or something. Well, there is an exception to this rule and it happens to be when you have an invite for Gaucho. ‘True friends’ climbed out of every crevice of London – relatives pulled rank, even an ex attempted to wheedle his way in. Ha. Because Gaucho is Gaucho. The name alone is enough to induce a Pavlovian salivation in any red-blooded carnivore. My lucky guest had been starving himself for two days to make proper use of the invite – he maintains it was more than worth it. Moments after we are sat down we are presented with what looks like half an Argentinian cow – three perfectly cut pieces of raw steak and invited to note the marbling on the Rib Eye, the tender flesh of the Fillet, the tempting butter and garlic marinade on a lean cut of Lomo. This month, Gaucho’s executive chef Brett Duarte wants people to ‘try something new’ – a delicious Confit
Belly of Pork for example or a lovely braised rabbit with notes of peach and apricot. Well, I tried, but when push came to steak, my friend was not budging from the fillet he had been picturing for days. In the interests of front-line journalism, I ordered the Pork. However, we were both keen to try a mixture of starters – the new sea bream tiraditos were fabulous – light, coconut and chilli spiced slivers of ceviche that went perfectly with a chilled glass of Sauvignon, an ideal start to the evening. However we also ordered the classic pan-fried scallops, which with smoked pancetta and watercress purée just won out over the newcomer – although this might be because I can’t think of a single meal that pancetta doesn’t improve. The main event lived up to expectations and then some, my friend says that he wished he’d made it three days and he would have ordered another steak – served with thick, indulgent, triple-cooked chips (what? It’s Christmas) and a citrusy Endive salad – the memory alone will keep him full for days. As for the pork, it was crispy, tender and absolutely delicious, served with a spiced pumpkin purée and autumnal buttered cabbage, yet I still craved the cow. If you come here all the time then by all mean do branch out, but if it’s a rare treat for God’s sake get the steak. I made up for this at dessert by ordering a slice of the Dulche de Leche Cheesecake – a Gaucho classic that has made a most welcome return to the menu after disappearing for a while presumably in some stage of salted caramel rebellion. See, you just can’t mess with a winning formula. Gaucho, 29 Westferry Circus, London E14, gauchorestaurants.co.uk, 020 7987 9494

Frozen Jukkasjärvi in Sweden may be home to almost as many dogs as villagers, but in winter, its Ice Hotel brings some 50,000 visitors. Rebuilt annually, this year is its 25th anniversary and promises inspiration from Eastern European folk art, and Baroque architecture – don’t worry about frostbite as it’s usual to spend just one night of your trip in an ice room before retreating to warmer accommodation. Glimpsing the Northern lights is a must, while dogsledding, horse tours and snowmobiling are the best way to enjoy the landscapes. icehotel.com

Cabin fever Hotel des Dromonts finally re-opens this month in the French alpine resort of Avoriaz and, in homage to its 1960s origin, the redesigned interiors are inspired by Pierre Cardin’s geometric motifs. etsetters flocking to the Alps for sunshine, Champagne air – so fresh it gives you a high – and après-ski shoulder-rubbing, are always seeking to upgrade on last season’s slopeside digs. And it’s not hard. From elegant palace hotels to flashy high-altitude havens with ski-in piazzas and sunken spas, new establishments eclipse last season’s like designer runway looks. But this year, the snow is shifting, and Moncler-clad ski bunnies are turning down haute-couture hotels in favour of more authentic, rustic-luxe mountain retreats. Traditional chalets designed with a quieter visitor in mind are taking more bookings than ever, according to Andy Stuart, owner of chalet company VIP SKI: “We’ve noticed a steep rise in demand for our more remote ‘off the radar’ chalets that sit at altitude on the piste – Chalet Poudreuse at 1,850m in Avoriaz, for example – and we think that it’s because as skiers become older, more experienced and more discerning, they seek tranquillity as much as they seek guaranteed snow.” Peacefulness is certainly what attracts in-the-know visitors to the hilltop hamlet of Commeire near Verbier. Here lies the Montagne Alternative, a collection of barns
perfectly petite ski resort of Les Gets in France. Just 50 minutes from Geneva, Les Gets feels a world away from the Champagne-swilling seasonaires, and is one of the least damaged resorts in the HauteSavoie. Unaffected by mass tourism, it sits at the base of the Alps like a child’s frosted snowglobe. Much of its charm can be attributed to a tight-knit community consisting mainly of four families and the surrounding area’s thriving farming business. Add to this stringent eco-regulations protecting the pine valleys enclosing the
“Peacefulness is certainly what attracts in-the-know visitors to the hilltop hamlet of Commeire” so lovingly restored, you’d never know they were part of a hotel. Haybarn exteriors blend with retro-styled interiors and floor-to-ceiling picture windows to heart-lifting effect, and in place of snow butlers and pseudo-Swiss design, the ethos behind the establishment is one of long-term sustainability. On top of stylish interiors featuring retro slingback chairs and Brazilian hand-knotted rugs, there’s yoga, Afghan walking and private dinners in the town’s original carnotzet (wine cellar) to enjoy. Eduardo Ramos, director of operations at the Montagne Alternative, explains: “What we offer goes way beyond shuttling guests to and from the slopes. People come here to connect with the essence of the mountain, far away from noise, crowds and technology. We give our guests space, nature and silence.” The trend for authentic rustic-luxe is also gaining pace in some of Europe’s hippest new ski hotels. Both The Chedi in Andermatt and the irrefutably cool Alpina Gstaad in Switzerland are tempering contemporary aesthetics with reclaimed wooden beams, log fires in guest rooms and side tables fashioned from antique walking sticks. However, for genuine Alpine authenticity, one has to look a little harder; dig a bit deeper into the avalanche of luxury hotel and chalet offerings. Enter, the
village (off-piste skiing is frowned upon should you accidentally behead a rare form of flora), and the net result is extra-long ski runs, and air so clean you can almost feel yourself getting younger with each day you stay. Situated on the Swiss-French border with access to Morzine and Avoriaz, there’s powder by the truckload at Le Chamossière and wide-open pistes perfect for beginners at Ranfolly, all of which is crowned by ravishing views of Mont Blanc. Non-skiers needn’t miss out either. They can pull on their fur-lined boots and crunch along 5km trails, weaving patterns in the Mont Chéry and Chavannes slopes – walking for hours without encountering another soul – then meet friends for lunch before riding a gondola back to ground level. In town, the bright lights of Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Chopard are absent. Streets are lined with traditional Savoyarde architecture and many of the homes are still heated the old-fashioned way: by wood burner. Back in the 1970s, a rally cry dictated that “the highest building in the village must be the church steeple”, and this motto still serves it well. Said church steeple is visible from most of Les Gets’ low-lying landmarks, including a number of charming family-run chalets. But from the yawning picture windows of Les Gets’ most luxurious chalet

Ferme de Moudon, you won’t be able to see it. Nor will you be able to see the resort’s ski gondolas gently drifting up and down the mountain, or the usual higgledypiggledy clutter of hardwood rooftops and jaunty fairy-lit bars. The view from Ferme de Moudon is one of pure, undiluted alpine privilege: a blanketed snowy valley steeply encased by forests of pine trees. From the chalet’s wraparound terrace, where sheepskin-covered wooden rockers beg to be reclined in, all you can hear is rushing water from the brook below – pure Narnia. Located at the end of a quiet lane, a mile outside town, with little in the way of signposting, this 18th-century farmhouse is large enough to sleep ten in glorious isolation. Combining locally sourced timber, stone and glass with 21st-century good looks, renowned British interior designer Nicky Dobree hit the nail on the head when she built it ten years ago with the help of Norwegian architect Henriette Salvesen. From the outside, it’s a traditional piece of alpine vernacular, but inside, gleaming surfaces collide with chunky ancient beams for a decadent rough-luxe feel. Dobree’s ability to blend modern clean lines with deep solidarity is what sets Ferme de Moudon apart from other ski chalets, and the benefits of having an interiors expert at the helm are plain for all to see: warmth, texture and personality in spades. Catering to guests’ every whim, there is a staff of five including a professional chef who is well-versed in the art of crisping the surface of a crème brûlée, and a housekeeping team who provide a better turndown service than most five-star hotels. Everything has been thought of, from heated boot racks to the basket of Twix by the back door should you need a sugar fix on a static chairlift. Even suntan lotion is provided. Alongside unparalleled local knowledge,

the team here bring dry wit and impeccable manners to the table, and possess all the contacts necessary to whisk you to the best snow, whether it be by 4x4 or helicopter. And it’s for this reason that we crown Ferme de Moudon this season’s best chalet in the Alps. Actress Emma Thompson was certainly impressed – you should see the gushing scrawl she left in the guestbook.

New York
There’s simply nowhere like New York, and there is definitely nowhere like New York at Christmas. From shows to shops, you’ll never want to leave
‘G
WORDS: ELLE BLAKEMAN
ive me such shows! Give me the streets of Manhattan!’ cried poet and essayist Walt Whitman in his enduring love letter to the Big Apple. Although a lot has changed in the 100 or so years since then, the spirit of New York City remains, still alive with possibility and inspiring some of the best literature, art, fashion, music and culture in the world.
One of the best things about New York is its layout – a logical, helpful format where streets and avenues cross in a numerical grid and allow you to both instantly work out where you are and, pleasingly, to sound like a local when hailing a cab: “55th & 5th please”, you’ll say, inwardly thrilled that this guy clearly thinks you are from here (N.B. He doesn’t. No New Yorker says please to a driver). If you’re here at Christmas then forget about ‘not being a tourist’ and do things that will make you happy
“Here you are Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Rachel in Friends, Don Draper in Mad Men” The famous skyline – the ‘first wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world’ according to F. Scott Fitzgerald – is an awe-inspiring sight that never fails to delight even the most cynical of travellers. New York is the stuff of films and television shows and, being here, it’s easy to feel that you have slipped into one yourself – here you are Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Rachel in Friends, Don Draper in Mad Men – you shop, eat and skip down streets, delighting at names of avenues that are as known to you as your hometown, absorbed via years of osmosis from both the big and small screen – Fifth, Broadway, Madison.
– take in some shopping on Fifth before wandering down for a skate outside the Rockefeller centre. For serious luxury brands, hit up SoHo where you will find all the usual suspects – incongruously in a super-cool, urban atmosphere – and stop by The Mercer Kitchen for a cocktail or two. Sunday Brunch is the closest thing to religion in Manhattan – take a stroll along the high line (an elevated freight rail line transformed into a beautiful public park) which was completed this autumn. Start at West 34th Street and follow it to the end where you will appear in the trendy Meatpacking District where you will find many a great Eggs Benedict and Bloody Mary to reward you.

the old The Plaza Ernest Hemingway once advised F. Scott Fitzgerald to give his liver to Princeton and his heart to The Plaza. I’m happy to hand over both. The Plaza, a Fairmont Managed Hotel, is a New York institution and the backdrop to so many films that it should get a cut from Hollywood – The Way We Were, The Great Gatsby, Funny Girl, and of course, the classic Home Alone II: Lost In New-York – all have introduced us to a world of 24-carat gold-plated sinks and fixtures, of solid marble bathrooms and plump, white beds. A designated New York City Landmark since 1969, The Plaza is listed on the Register of Historic Places and is the only New York City hotel to be designated as a National Historic Landmark.
“Ernest Hemingway once advised F. Scott Fitzgerald to give his liver to Princeton and his heart to The Plaza” But all of that makes it sound dated and out-of-touch, yet the Plaza is actually anything but – the Palm Court now serves cocktails instead of Afternoon Tea and the Food Hall in the basement, inspired by similar European food courts, including Harrods, is positively buzzing with gormet titillation: delicious Cobb salads from Tartinery, seafood from Sabi Sushi and decadent Red Velvet cakes from Billy’s Bakery. Go for dinner at the Todd English Food Hall – where you will seduced with some of New York’s finest cuisine under chef English’s reign – home-made pasta, sushi from the ‘raw bar’, and the best flatbread pizza you will ever eat in your life (the fig and prosciutto has achieved cult status). The food market décor – all mosaic marble floors and elegant wood panelling – keeps the meal relaxed, and despite being in one of the world’s best hotels, the atmosphere is easy-going and friendly. Those looking for more glam than chilled can go to the famous Rose Club, which overlooks the marble lobby and on Wednesdays and Thursdays plays host to live jazz. But of course, the food, the beds, the gold sinks cannot compete with The Plaza’s best feature – Central Park. The famous spot is a stone’s throw away – literally – and simply cries out to guests to enjoy an early-morning or pre-dinner stroll, once the tourists have gone away – heaven. the new Park Hyatt New York The Park Hyatt is a brand well-versed in New York glamour, so for their new flagship, which opened this summer, the pressure was on to really pull out all the stops. Well they have. The location is like a roll call of New York destinations – in the heart of Midtown it is exactly opposite Carnegie Hall and the Russian Tea Room, with Central Park and Broadway just a short stroll away. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Christian de Portzamparc, the hotel is an endlessly elegant affair – with heavy mahogany walls and floors, huge beds, cream marble bathrooms and a drinks cabinet-cum-suitcase that looks like it’s been pinched from the set of Mad Men. There is a wayward remote in the bathroom that I can’t work out what it’s for – after much searching (and then just crashing buttons) I realise that there is a hidden TV in the bathroom mirror, which impresses me more than I can say. Waterfall taps, La Labo products – the attention to detail is flawless. The feel is decidedly masculine, but not alienating. Presided over by executive chef Sebastien Archambault, the restaurant offering here is nothing short of exquisite – New Yorkers being a notoriously
“Designed by Pritzker Prizewinning architect Christian de Portzamparc, the hotel is an endlessly elegant affair” tough crowd – and you can have a great Manhattan experience without ever leaving the building. Start with a cocktail in The Living Room bar overlooking Carnegie Hall before settling down for one of the city’s best steaks (and I don’t use that accolade lightly) at The Back Room at One57 – a dark, seductive space full of beautiful people where even the water is worth writing about. And when you realise that the play you booked starts in 15 mins, you can still get there (you’ll have to run, but you can make it). The real star turn is the top-floor pool by the stunning Spa Nalai, lit by a swathe of laterns and with views over Midtown – go early in the morning or late at night and revel in feeling like you own the city. SALES MARK BENNETT, senior
negotiator at Knight Frank Wapping, comments on the residential sales market
As Christmas approaches and the party season gets into full swing, now is the perfect time to reflect on how the London property market has performed throughout the year. We started with an unprecedented level of activity as domestic and international buyers clambered to buy London property. This led to many properties going to sealed bids and in some cases, achieving ten per cent over the asking price. The Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, then came under pressure to cool the market. In April, the introduction of stricter mortgage lending seems to have had the desired effect, as some people saw their budgets reduce once the new regulations took effect. It has been noted that the market has become more settled over the latter part of the year, but it would be unfair to suggest the market had dipped. The shortage of supply especially in the core market place (£450-1 million) has meant that well priced stock has continued to go straight under offer, especially in Wapping and the City fringes. The same can be said for the one to two million bracket. We have seen prime property transactions (two to five million) slowdown as buyers pause to see what if anything will happen regarding the possibility of the Mansion Tax. So what will 2015 bring to Wapping and the City Fringes? It is perhaps a little early to tell. The general consensus is that prices will remain quite static. This isn’t surprising if you consider property prices have increased on average by 40 per cent over the past four years, exceeding growth of 15 per cent in the UK mainstream market and a nine per cent fall in the price of the safe haven asset, gold. We have seen the demographic of buyers change sharply over the past 12 months as the traditional Central London buyers look further afield for what they consider to be better value properties within an emerging part of London. This will bolster prices as the investment continues to change the skyline.

NEWS LETTINGS GARY HALL, partner
and department head at Knight Frank Wapping, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market
EASTERN PROMISE Canning Town’s popularity as a location to buy property is soaring, driven by its proximity to the soon to open high-speed Crossrail, and because the area is undergoing a huge regeneration that will see 10,000 homes and a new town centre built over the next 15 years. One of Canning Town’s most talked about developments is Rathbone Market, the second phase of which, called Aurelia, has completely sold off-plan. The development contains a mixture of 650 one and two bedroom apartments and was built English Cities Fund (ECF), in partnership with Newham Council. If you’re looking to invest in London, it might be time to look east. aurelia-apartments.co.uk

Whilst rental values rose for the eighth successive month in October, recovering to levels last seen two years ago in the City and East, we are still only 3.1 per cent higher than we were at the end of 2013. Even though the speed of growth is slow, these are positive signs for investors, especially with new applicants registrations increasing by 15 per cent and tenancies agreed increasing by 24 per cent from July to October compared to the same period last year. Rental yields are also looking more encouraging with percentages increasing across London, with better percentages the further east you head. Central London is currently at 2.9 per cent, Wapping is 3.85 per cent and Canary Wharf leads the way with 4.2 per cent. Surprisingly the only part of London to outperform Canary Wharf is Wimbledon.
“The January rental market normally starts with a bang and competition for properties is high” As the January rental market normally starts with a bang and competition for properties is high from the moment we return to our offices, tenants should make the most of the quieter market in December and find their perfect apartment before London shuts for Christmas. There is a good opportunity to secure a property in 2014 and a possible discount on your rental, while your fellow tenants are off enjoying Christmas parties and buying their presents. For a landlord, there is nothing better than knowing they have a tenant lined up for January as they break for Christmas. This is my 11th Christmas with Knight Frank and I am delighted to still be dealing with many of the same clients year after year. If I can be of assistance in 2015, I would be delighted to hear from you. Merry Christmas from everyone at Knight Frank and we hope you all have a prosperous New Year.

STATE OF THE MARKET Starting 2015 on the right foot
The Rise of the private rental sector
JASON TAYLOR,
sales director at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market
ALASDAIR CARPENTER,
As 2014 draws to a close, thoughts naturally turn to what the market has in store next year. However, what of the year we leave behind? Industry insiders predicted that the sales market would slow down towards the end of the year and the lettings market would grow. We have certainly seen panic buying witnessed earlier in the year come to an end, but it is still the case that if a property is correctly priced it will receive plenty of attention. The lettings department has definitely seen good activity throughout the year, but the current volume of instructions is noticeably lower compared to year-on-year figures. One reason for this could be that landlords have been seduced by the buoyant sales market and are reluctant to commit to continue letting in 2015. On the whole, 2014 has been very good for both sides of the industry and we have seen record breaking figures reached in both departments, sometimes even in the same month. The East London area has not really followed any of the usual trends this year, other than seeing new developments appearing on every piece of land as it becomes available for redevelopment. This is a trend that we can expect to continue for quite some time yet, indeed over the next few years we are set to see 25,000 apartments being built in E14 alone. So, what can we expect from the year ahead? More properties coming onto the market for sale will see buyers having more choice, which in turn will bring prices down. However, with the premium prices commanded by new builds in the area, the resale prices will still look very attractive. Buyers looking to invest in East London will certainly see a return on their investment, not just from capital growth, but because rental properties in this area will very rarely see a void period as the demand for lettings here will always remain high. Everybody here at Franklyn James would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and both a joyous and prosperous New Year.
For several months the private rental sector has taken a back seat to the burgeoning residential sales market. The wind of change could, however, be blowing through the property market in the coming year. Over recent weeks we have witnessed the first signs of a slowdown in the sales market. Prices in most areas of the Capital have become more static and the change in sentiment from potential buyers is almost tangible. This is a marked change from recent months where the booming sales market seemed nothing short of relentless. Next year will see a general election and historically this tends to result in a quieter period for the housing market. The very top echelons of the market may be the most affected as uncertainty over the proposed mansion tax will likely deter prospective buyers. The pause in the sales market will likely be temporary, but it will no doubt add stimulus to the private rental market in the coming months – welcome news to landlords across the Capital who have had to endure a relatively stagnant market place for the last two years. The lending restrictions imposed by the MMR (Mortgage Market Review), which have enforced more rigorous affordability checks on borrowers, have also added to the recent slowdown. With increased mortgage regulation the London sales market has had more reliance on the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ and overseas investors. In the run up to the General Election it is understandable why many of those in either one of these categories would want to delay making a decision until after the results are known. After the sharp increases in house prices in recent years it would make sense that more households have ended up in the private rental sector. It is forecasted that by 2020 almost a quarter of households will rent, compared with a fifth in 2014. On a personal note I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

hile André Balazs sealed Chiltern Street’s fate as one of the most stylish spots to be seen out and about in the capital, Frogmore and Galliard Homes have made it an equally desirable spot to call home with the launch of their flagship luxury residential apartments. The Chilterns, situated at 74-76 Chiltern Street in Marylebone, is built on a site that was once the home of Viscount François-René de Chateaubriand, and offers some of the finest homes in the West End. Just off Marylebone High Street, overlooking the greenery of Paddington Street Gardens and fronting onto Chiltern Street, you’re just a stone’s throw from the high street and its vast choice of top boutiques, delis, bars and restaurants. Totalling 44 luxury residences, the six premium and penthouse spaces provide an abundance of inside and outside lateral living space as well as five-star services. The first of the two penthouses is priced at £25m; a spectacular 7,566sq ft four-bedroom duplex located on the top two floors of the building, it provides 5,047sq ft of internal living space and 2,519sq ft of private roof gardens, the largest in the West End. On the top floor of the duplex is a grand reception room over 1,000sq ft in size that spans the entire depth of the apartment building and has a raised 3.8m-high coffered ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows. Folding glass walls open onto three
beautiful private rooftop terraces. Priced at £12.575m, the second penthouse is a luxurious 3,962sq ft single-level three-bedroom residence providing 2,886sq ft of internal and 1,076 sq ft of external roof gardens. Sliding walls open to give access to a 12-seater dining room and there is also a spacious family kitchen and breakfast room with a separate utility room. Set within the architecturally stunning seven-storey glass and stone façade, other details include a striking stepped roofline, floor-to-ceiling windows with sun-shielding feature louvres and glass-fronted balconies. Lifestyle facilities are planned to include a signature restaurant with in-room chef and dining; private gymnasium and sauna; private cinema; 21 basement wine cellars with a wine tasting room; underground parking with valet; a lobby featuring photographs of the local area by David Bailey and a 24-hour hotel-style concierge service. Indeed, The Chilterns has earned its local nickname as the ‘One Hyde Park’ of W1. Stephen Conway, chief executive of Galliard Homes, said: “At The Chilterns we have combined luxury, technology, art and lifestyle amenities to achieve an outstanding level of quality. The Chilterns offering includes hospitality and leisure facilities, which when combined with exceptional homes creates the area’s very best address and a superb investment for the future.”

hen it comes to buying in London, undoubtedly one of the most iconic views that a property could have is of Tower Bridge. Discerning buyers are realising that Wapping is one of the best locations to purchase homes in the capital, for not only do its river-facing homes have stunning views, they also benefit from the amazing light that comes with facing south. Tower View, an exclusive development of just six apartments, is attracting strong interest from buyers searching for a truly special home. James Taylor, CEO of Private Property Group, one of the market leaders when it comes to marketing luxury developments,
explains its appeal: “Quite simply, these apartments have some of the best views in the world, the lateral apartments have a window system that completely opens up the reception rooms, creating some of the most beautiful living spaces I’ve seen in 20 years of working with developers.” Come for the view and stay for the beautifully appointed, modern apartments – Tower View is a luxury development that showcases London at its best.
