es. We began this issue by working out what... well actually, just by working out. Lucky enough to have the co-operation of Canary Wharf’s fitness gurus to call upon, the team compared ballet, cardio, juice cleanses and personal training in a quest to feel and look good in January. Our assistant editor could even be found swimming in the Thames on a Thursday evening in November. Find out how she got on, on page 58. Purely in the name of research of course, we then enlisted the advice of British male supermodel David Gandy, who told us he opts for five gym sessions a week to keep in shape for campaigns, and has a rather dedicated twice-daily skincare regime. It shows. Read our interview – and see the photoshoot – on page 20. We’ve also delved deep into science (and make-up bags) to come up with the definitive A-Z of beauty ingredients and what you need them for. Knowing your ‘R’ (retinol) from your ‘W’ (wild phytoplankton) will save you time and money (p.48). With good intentions for the year ahead, on page 92 fashion designer Alice Temperley MBE tells us how she’s helping women in war-torn regions of the world to gain access to education and skills workshops as an ambassador for Women for Women International. Hard work and perseverance are the qualities she credits for her own success, but, she also highlights the importance of ‘staying true to yourself’. And the message that came out of this issue, is a simple one. If a routine is fun, continue. If not, try something else. For all of the things we want to change in 2016, there are as many that should stay the same. Don’t rush your resolutions.

GANDY From grooming (twice a day) to gym-going (five times a week) it takes a lot to be the world’s most famous male supermodel. Here, David Gandy tells gabrielle lane why a commitment to fitness and nutrition comes naturally, and is shaping his business ventures
A
meeting with David Gandy? David Gandy’s mobile number? Pictures of David Gandy to illustrate the feature? Cite a Q&A with a certain British model as the inspiration for this month’s cover and become the most popular person in the office, so I learn. But – whisper it – when planning our January issue, the men in our team were interested too. Gandy, with his piercing blue eyes and chiselled physique has become something of a gym-spiration, credited with giving a more masculine image to men’s fashion: he likes cars, dates a pop star and happens to be a rather savvy businessman to boot, investing in everything from high-end shoe brand David Preston to a nutritional masterstroke that is the new proteinrich, fat- and sugar-free ice-cream brand Wheyhey. He’s also partnered with M&S for a range of loungewear and basics under its Autograph tag, and it was I who had the pain-staking task of choosing the most appropriate campaign images for the magazine. In the name of duty... Gandy agrees to this interview on the basis of his passion for health and fitness. While he admits that he “knows many models who have never seen the inside of a gym”, that’s not him. (In case you hadn’t noticed.) “Normally, I train three to four times a week, and my training changes so that I’m always shocking the body and the muscles. It always consists of weights and super sets, and sometimes circuits. I’ll go from two weeks of heavier weights and lower reps, to weeks of medium weights and super sets and then when I’m travelling and away for work I do a lot of body weight exercise,” he explains. “If I’m in training for a certain project or shoot then I will be training at least five times a week and my diet will be a little stricter, increasing my calorie and protein intake to help build muscle and get leaner.” Keeping up? In person, Gandy is more slender than you’d
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
think, but still strong. “It’s about finding out what works for you and your body type, and the body type you want to achieve. I’ve realised over the years that very heavy weights and low reps make me bulky and aren’t very effective,” he says. I ask him if the modelling industry puts the same amount of pressure on men to stay in shape, as it allegedly does on women. “There’s never been any pressure on me. The only pressure I have, I put on myself. I trained and played a lot of sport before modelling and I always want to be in shape and healthy. It’s part of my life.” To that end, he eats healthily too. Dinner chez Gandy is likely to consist of chicken, turkey or fish: He avoids processed meats, white carbohydrates, saturated fat and sugar. “The modelling world, I think, isn’t dissimilar to sport. Like sportsmen and women, our bodies are a tool that have to be in the best shape possible. Like sportsmen who train and watch their diet, that is their dedication and that’s the same for a model who wants to do well.” After 15 years in the industry, it’s fair to say Gandy is ‘doing well’. In its first Christmas, the David Gandy for Autograph line shifted around 250,000 units from a 22-piece collection. At the launch of the swimwear shorts from the same range, one pair sold every minute – and new styles will be added this year. He tells me he wants the line to “compete with the best” in terms of quality and design. But while he’s worked with leading photographers and stylists during his career, they’ve not had too much of an influence on him. “I’ve never followed trends and I take inspiration from lots of areas. It’s good to be individual and having the confidence to wear what’s right for your body type is really important.” His latest project ties back to his interest in health and nutrition. Having met Brunel University graduates Greg Duggan and Damien Kennedy at V Festival in 2013, Gandy became a backer of their all-natural ice-cream brand, which in the last two

years has sold more than 2.5 million tubs. “There’s a real lack of dietary education,” he says. “The importance of protein is high but many people believe that you only eat protein, or whey protein, when you are trying to build muscle. People are consuming far too much sugar and salt in their diet and think that healthy eating means being boring with only salads and vegetables on the menu, but that’s not the case. Protein slows the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, which helps with maintaining a stable blood sugar level that’s essential for weight management. “Wheyhey ice-cream is a whey protein product that’s ideal whether you’re training, trying to build up muscle mass or simply wanting to get trim and
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
stay in shape. The most brilliant thing though is that it’s still an ice-cream – and let’s face it, who doesn’t really like ice-cream?” Having whizzed through the David Gandy diet and exercise regime, our talk turns to skincare. His verdict? “Really good men’s grooming brand’s are few and far between.” But he still opts for a threestep routine twice a day – [yep, us neither]. “Cleansing the face and using a scrub when you can, or combining the two, then applying a good serum and moisturiser: That’s it – that’s all I think men need to do. But men have thicker skin than women’s, so women’s products will not always be as effective. Good men’s grooming lines are SK-II or Dr Lancer.” While his routine might sound intense, Gandy
feature
Houndstooth gown, £49.50 Houndstooth long pant, £27.50
insists it’s the opposite. Exercise helps keep him sane when travelling for work. “It’s shown that you’re less stressed if you train,” he points out. “Apart from that, my passion is cars. I love driving and I race cars too – it will always be escapism for me.” At the moment, he’s having a Porsche 365 fully restored to its former glory, something that he describes as “wonderful”. Although, his other luxuries are decidedly more simple. “A luxury to me is having time to take the dog
for a walk along the River Thames and catch up with friends and family,” he adds. Gandy, it seems, is fairly content with his lot. With his lifestyle already geared towards health and fitness, and various new ventures taking shape, resolutions for 2016 are yet to be made. “I always think there are areas of my life I can improve on, but I try and improve these things throughout the year, not just in January,” he quips. I’ll see you at the gym, David.

Clear as Crystal It was the Ancient Greeks who believed that crystals have spiritual healing properties. While the Canary Wharf team is slightly dubious as to the restorative power of stones, we can at least admit that Noor Fares’ new jewellery line, Krystallos, has renewed our faith in the power of fine jewellery to lift our spirits. The name of the capsule collection is taken from the Greek word meaning ‘ice’ and comprises an array of precious stones – from white and rose quartz to amethysts and lapis lazuli – that have been set into geometric pendants, earrings and rings. Art for Art’s Sake Jaquet Droz’s The Charming Bird has won the 2015 Mechanical Exception prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. The watch’s pièce de résistance, a miniaturised bird ensconced in a 47mm-diameter case, plays no part in telling the time and will only sing once activated. Instead, the piece pays homage to the micro-mechanical mastery of the company’s namesake – who built mechanical birds in the 18th century. Monkey Business 2016 is the year of the monkey in Chinese astrology and jewellers have paid tribute to the animal with witty, inventive and playful designs. Known for her whimsical pieces, Lydia Courteille has created the Mono ring, which features a monkey’s head carved in 18-karat yellow gold and ornately decorated with green tsavorites, orange sapphires, amethysts and diamonds. Meanwhile, Spanish brand Carrera y Carrera has designed a number of new earrings, our favourite of which presents two monkeys dangling mischievously on either earring while holding a bunch of pink opals. carreraycarrera.com; lydiacourteille.com
Perpetual Innovation “I call perpetual calendars boomerang watches,” says Maximilian Büsser, founder of MB&F. “Boomerang watches because they come back for repair so often.” The trouble with perpetual calendar watches – those that automatically account for months of varying lengths and leap years – is that mechanisms jam and dates jump when they shouldn’t. MB&F’s solution is the Legacy Machine Perpetual, which, instead of using a conventional spaceconsuming big-lever system to flick through dates, uses a series of superimposed disks. MB&F’s system eradicates the need to skip over redundant days, meaning there is no possibility of the date jumping incorrectly. extreme watchmaking More than manufacturing high-performance timepieces, Richard Mille creates uncompromising status symbols for the 21st century WORDS: Richard Brown
T
here has, in the past two decades, been a trend for big-name watchmakers to abandon their posts at big-name watch companies and set up specialist ateliers of their own. The result has been a new type of haute horology – ultra-modern timepieces produced in super-limited numbers that are characterised, typically, by their renegade design, novel mechanics and preposterous price tags. Of the cluster of watchmakers that have come to define this realm – MB&F, Christophe Claret, Hysek, HYT and Urwerk (although there are others) – only one has successfully seeped into the collective consciousness of the watch-wearing public: Richard Mille. Thanks to partnerships with Felipe Massa and Rafael Nadal, and then with Yohan Blake and Bubba Watson, and through strategic sponsorship of teams like Lotus F1 and Manchester City Football Club, Richard Mille has ensured that its watches – or at the very least its logo – occupy a place in the public RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur

psyche that’s far more prominent than any of its avant-garde stable mates. De Bethune, Hautlence and Roger Dubuis all make fantastic watches. All remain unknown to the man on the street. Richard Mille, the man, established his eponymous company in 2001. Never having trained as a watchmaker himself, Mille had spent more than two decades in the commercial divisions of various watch and clock companies before having the entrepreneurial vision to create what was effectively his very own watch segment. Considering the current crop of calibres used in sports watches to be archaic and uninteresting, the Frenchman employed his old friend Fabrice Deschanel, general director of Renaud & Papi (movement makers to Audemars Piguet), to find a way of modernising the way watches are made. Mille’s aim, which became his slogan, was to manufacture ‘racing machines for the wrist’. Fourteen years after Richard Mille debuted his first watch – the skeletonised RM 001 borrowed subtle touches from watches Mille had worked on at previous employer Mauboussin, and established the now immediately recognisable tonneau-shaped case – the brand is now selling some 3,000 watches a year. Its loftiest creation, the RM 056 Felipe Massa Limited Edition Sapphire Tourbillon, will set you back a princely £1,560,000. Entry-level prices – for the RM 023, RM 029, RM 010 and RM 016 – start around £60,000. Even sales at this price point suggest an annual turnover of almost a quarterof-a-billion quid. Not bad for a man who refused to do any market research, or study his competition, prior to launch. RM 26-02 Evil Eye Tourbillon

Mille, now 64, is as cool a cucumber as you’ll find in the watch industry – bespectacled, funny and full of bonhomie. Even so, the success his company has enjoyed must have taken even him by surprise? “Only at the very beginning,” Mille answers, implying success is something you quickly get used to. “I literally went from showing the first pieces to prospective buyers and hoping for their interest, to having to produce a larger number within only a few weeks. It has been a non-stop, high-speed ride ever since.” So, what’s Richard Mille the brand all about? In a word: performance. Performance under duress; performance when the wearer of the watch is pushing it to its limit. Most sports watch ambassadors will remove their watch before they compete. Not Richard Mille’s. Bubba Watson wears his while driving golf balls over 310 yards; Nadal’s is subjected to serves of almost 120 mph. Such forces would affect even the most basic of mechanical movements; the ones inside Bubba’s and Nadal’s are tourbillons. Bubba’s, the RM 38-01, contains a mechanical G-force sensor that’s able to record the force of a golfer’s swing – a world first, unsurprisingly – while Nadal’s, the RM 27-01, is officially the planet’s lightest tourbillon wristwatch, weighing just 19 grams, including the strap. “For anyone looking for a no-compromise timepiece that is at the cutting edge of 21st century haute horlogerie, our watches perfectly fit the bill,” says Mille. He insists, too, that the profession of his chosen partners helps, rather than hinders, innovation at the company. “The collaborations are beneficial for everyone concerned. I am not talking only about money here; much more interesting for me is what we learn about watchmaking as we face new challenges with different disciplines. These experiences on track and field cannot be given a value, as the knowledge we gain working with each personality flows through the entire collection.”

In trouble-shooting problems like the violent accelerations and vibrations experienced during a F1 grand prix, Richard Mille gives us things like baseplates made out of high-density carbon nanofibres. Once the preserve of the aeronautic and space industries, carbon nanofibre is created under 740 bars and a temperature of 2,000°C, making it highly resistant to shocks and thermal influences. When Felipe Massa crashed at 170mph during qualification for the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009, his RM 006 proved completely unaffected
69, RM 031 or RM 27-02, were developed for only a handful of limited-series watches.” It’s not difficult, nowadays, to find a watch that will set you back the price of a two-bedroom house in suburbia. Richard Mille’s pieces, though, will more regularly afford you an apartment in Fulham. When your creations command some of the highest prices in the industry, discourse has a tendency to centre on money rather mechanical mastery. By remaining uncompromising in its commitment to pushing boundaries, both in the
“Watches can be fun, enjoyable, precious and even make you smile – but in the end, timepieces are, for me, serious objects that I spend my life researching and developing” – largely, it’s thought, because of the cutting-edge composition of the materials inside. Massa and fellow F1 driver Romain Grosjean, along with nine-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb, wear a Richard Mille every time they race. Though his creations may model things as farout as dragon’s eyes (the RM26-02), magnolia plants (the RM 19-02) and diamond-encrusted spiders (the RM 19-01), Mille insists his watches are “anti-bling”. “There are no gimmicks to be found in my watches; everything I do – absolutely everything – has a clear reason behind it. Great attention is paid to every single detail, even to such small items as specially-made screws, each of which takes 20 separate operations to create.” In the case of the examples above, this means that the five handcrafted petals of the magnolia flower open and close automatically to beautiful effect; that the ‘Evil Eye’ motif is actually a type of enamelling that requires applying several layers of oxides onto gold at temperatures of 900°C; and that the skeletonised baseplate of the RM 19-01 is machined into the shape of a spider’s web from 18K white gold before being decorated with hundreds of black sapphires. “If you are just looking for a big chunk of gold to wear, or a watch whose only interesting feature is that it has a magnesium and aluminum ring inside it, then I’m not your man. We have presented several new movements over the past five years; an unheard-of amount for a small company like ours. It’s even more crazy when you realise that some of these new, highly complex movements, like that for the RM 19-02 Fleur, RM
movements it makes and the materials it uses, Richard Mille will at least be able to reassure its clients they are getting what they pay for. Richard Mille, 90 Mount Street, W1K, richardmille.com

‘L
ayering’. Not just the buzzword for dressing to suit the transition between seasons, it now applies to jewellery too. Since Alessandro Michele joined Gucci as creative director in January 2015, fashion directors have been praising the ‘more-is-more’ style of his A/W 15 look – a brooch here, a pair of spangly earrings there. The effect is one of glamour and fun, and of playfulness over power. In fact, it would seem too ‘try-hard’ to attempt the look with anything other than fake diamonds: this is not the time for family heirlooms or insurance policies. How do you avoid looking like you’ve attempted a child-like raid of the jewellery box? You go to Cadenzza and opt for pieces that have been curated from the collections of emerging designers, across a mix of styles and price points. You choose pieces that are individually sleek and interesting, like FREE the knotted Archer cuff by GIFT Giles & Brother, inspired Receive a free gift by Japanese armour; when you make a skinny beaded bracelets purchase in store and by Caroline Néron, and quote ‘Canary Wharf’ slinky, gem-studded bands magazine. from Swarovski Crystallized. T&Cs apply* And you wear them all at once, without apology – throwing a ring and simple studs on too, if you dare. Then, team with a sharp suit. The simple fact is that festive dressing makes us feel good, and there’s no reason to stop in January. the new season with paul smith The first pieces of the pre-spring season have begun to hit the rails at Paul Smith, with elegantly tailored coats, a quilted blazer and jumpers made from luxurious cashmere and merino wool making the perfect transitional looks. A highlight investment piece is the wool and cashmere Epsom overcoat in khaki – a shade that made a big appearance on the S/S16 catwalks. Crafted in Italy, it features a smart peak lapel and is relaxed through the body in its fit. Elsewhere, palm tree, venus fly trap and ant motifs take inspiration from nature and – as ever – an array of pocket squares and socks are on offer in just about every colour and pattern. In its first celebrity collaboration, Superdry has teamed up with British Golden Globe-winning actor and musician Idris Elba for the Idris Elba + Superdry premium collection. Elba was involved in the entire process from early concepts to completion and features in the campaign, shot by renowned photographer Rankin. the green light Numerous shades of green made an appearance on the S/S16 catwalks and military green – as seen at Oliver Spencer – was a popular choice. Still a lighter option than black, tailoring worked well in the shade and Savile Row’s Gieves & Hawkes and Tommy Hilfiger set the bar high. Just stay away from the season’s animal prints so the end result isn’t too George of the Jungle.

spring meets wolford Move – the core theme of the S/S 16 collection from Wolford – largely refers to its new, more flexible cotton-contour lingerie line. The fine cotton fabric has a shaping effect, creating a flattering, closely fitted silhouette. Other pieces in the collection, which is the first by Wolford’s new creative director Grit Seymour, fall under the theme Shine – cue the glimmering opaque Stardust tights – and Layer, which features white mesh-like Netsation bodies and lingerie. THE FITNESS CEO:
Rhian Stephenson of Psycle London Rhian Stephenson is the woman at the helm of Psycle, the disco on a bike that is changing the way Londoners view fitness What is your background? I’m originally from Canada where I was a competitive swimmer. Sport has always been in my blood and I qualified as a nutritionist and worked in clinic for eight years. Then, I got into brand consultancy as I wanted to reach and help more people achieve their goals. How did you first become involved with Psycle? I was approached by one of the founders who had lived in the States for eight months and saw a craze emerging within the boutique fitness industry for pay-as-you-go luxury lifestyle brands, such as bootcamps and spinning. He saw a gap in the market here, and he put together a team four years ago.
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
Why is Psycle so popular? Our instructors are charismatic, they have a background in dance or sport and they bring a special energy, together with unique playlists curated by our DJs. Psycle offers a full body workout including a cardio burn, strength and core training. As you ride as a team, the class-based workout is a way to feel part of something bigger. You always leave on a high. How do you train your instructors? We have a range of instructors from ex-athletes to professional dancers and we really look for passion, because you can teach fitness knowledge. We train everyone in-house in our own method – it takes three months and that includes the Psycle blueprint – physiology and weights. What can we expect from Psycle in the year ahead? We have retreats, boot camps and a
clothing line planned. The boot camps are either a mixture of spinning and strength workouts or a mix of spinning and yoga. They go from half days to full weeks, and then you can add on nutrition. We don’t focus on weight loss; it’s all about being strong and feeling good. We’re also collaborating with designer Lisa King, on a Psyclespecific clothing line. We always try and work with people who are in line with our brand ethos. Who would be the ultimate Psycle celebrity ambassador? The celebrity ambassador would be Ellie Goulding – she’s all about being strong and feeling powerful. She works out and she works hard and she’s authentic. Psycle is for someone that wants to have it all: you have a great lifestyle and you take care of yourself. Psycle, Crossrail Place 020 3229 0017; psyclelondon.com

A tale of two
exercise regimes
Faced with too-tight jeans and lifeless skin, January is a time to commit to a new regime. From lean muscle gains and pumping iron to trying the latest trendy classes and unusual workouts, we’ve rounded up the best ways to exercise, even for the gym-phobes among us Words: Charlotte Phillips & Gabrielle Lane
on-trend class workouts I promised myself this time would be different. Not another gym I dreaded on biannual visits and not another extortionately expensive personal trainer whom I came to despise. I had the lofty aim of actually enjoying exercise, and that required some outside-the-box thinking. If I hate something, I’ll throw in the towel. To commit, my regime had to be varied and, crucially, trendy. I’m a sucker for fads – and healthy, lifestyle-orientated workout classes with a stylish clientele are on trend. I start with a barre class at Virgin Active Canary Riverside, sceptical that slow ballet-inspired movements could burn fat. I naïvely imagined myself too physically fit for barre, but the contolled, tight motions drive my dormant muscles to shakeinducing limits, and the full-body workout has an advantage over gym classes or trainers who focus on one body part at a time. The class requires enough concentration that I don’t clock-watch. Leg extensions, arm raises and pliés are agonising, but the girls in the class tell me practice makes perfect (thrice weekly is optimal). “People can actually see results the next day, especially around the bottom and stomach,” says lean former ballet dancer and the instructor, Yvette Hales. The participants range in age but all have shapely, inspirational bodies. I learn that I prefer a fun, familiar group dynamic to one-on-one sessions, a notion further reinforced at spin class at Canary Wharf’s trendy Psycle: the energy is contagious. Next, my comfort zone is sanitised and cushy, so the idea of open-water swimming in the River
Thames doesn’t thrill me. I have no qualms regarding the 30-foot depth, which coach and former British triathlete, Rick Kiddle says is the main issue for newbies, but that it’s dark and the water is 12°C; I’m cheered only by Kiddle explaining that calorific expenditure increases in cold water. I try to avoid the edges (‘bacteria-ridden’, says Kiddle) or opening my mouth, but find it’s magical to be immersed in nature, surrounded by the majestic London skyline at night. I come to learn that initial resentment towards my 6.20am alarm clock dissipates when I begin exercising. It is possible to still socialise (my main fear) and exercise energises rather than exhausts me. Another lesson? Paying in advance for a class is great incentive to get there and you never regret a workout. Looking to detox, I try a three-day CPRESS juice cleanse, consisting of salads and juices (cold-pressed to preserve maximum nutrients and enzymes). The salads are delicious with courgette and sweet potato falafel, but even on the final juicing-only day, I’m surprisingly not hungry. I feel healthier and lighter; more revelatory was the joy in not planning my next meal, which, usually occupies a great deal of my time. Six weeks later, my hair is a permanently sweaty disaster, but I’ve lost four pounds and my skin looks rejuvenated from increased blood flow. I feel empowered and fit and I have a list of new classes to try: I conquered a juice cleanse and the Royal Docks. There’s no stopping me now. personal training in the gym The attrition rate for gym memberships throughout February is high. It’s common knowledge that attendance slumps by around 50 per cent as New Year’s resolutions fade: that’s a lot of good intentions and Sweaty Betty leggings gone awry. For some, the answer may be to swap treadmills for a dip in the Thames, but I’m unconvinced and ‘pull rank’ when the team are dividing up weird and wonderful classes. Instead, I enlist not one but three personal trainers to keep me on track. Extravagant? It doesn’t cost as much as you think. With a bit of research, I sign up to Limehouse Marina Elite, a gym that allows clients to alternate between sessions with different specialists – be it workouts focusing on functional movement and posture correction with female fitness guru Courtney Durando, weight circuits with semipro footballer Keron Joseph, or timed power and cardio drills with Mickey Helliet in its fullscale boxing ring – often used by professional sportsmen, far more skilled than I am. The gym is both smart and friendly. The changing rooms have a little steam room area, GHD straighteners, good towels and piped bird song – which matters to me much more than it should. And, it’s worth noting that this also isn’t the kind of place where you need to wear a vest, unless you really, really want to. Membership starts with a detailed fitness assessment and, after various measurements of body composition and strength using high-tech probes, scales and ultrasound jelly, Durando and I agree informally on my problem: Barbie legs. The combination of a relatively sedentary job and a fondness for wearing heels has left me inflexible, with very tight hamstrings, meaning that the typical gym peacocking (that I’ve seen through windows) could not only be difficult, but dangerous. I’m swiftly prescribed a series of dynamic lunges from wall to wall of the yoga studio, along with various moves that involve slowly pivoting while supported by TRX ropes hanging from the ceiling, with the aim of loosening up. “Going to the gym,” explains Durando, “is about movements for life.” As we age, it’s even more important to protect our joints and range of motion – the bikini body fix is a welcome by-product. As it relies upon core stability, TRX suspension gives a full-body workout and, because concentration is needed to balance and activate specific muscle groups, I find it clears my mind
in the way that running around a (very small) park used to, before the laps became repetitive and I ended up taking all my twenty-something emotional baggage along with me. Limehouse Marina Elite also has some great cardio equipment including an experiential spinning suite with video loops of real terrain, but for me, the bonus of working out with a trainer is having someone to guide your form through the squats, curls and thrusts that will give you a strong, lean body. Using props such as exercise balls and resistance bands to stay in position as you complete repeated leg raises and rowing mimes is a fairly simple and un-sweaty activity, but Durando explains that it creates muscle memories that help you to keep doing the moves in the right way in future and drive your performance from the right areas; if you’re not getting the results you want from the gym, you might be doing your exercises wrong. By the time I’ve mastered the perfect breathing and techniques, sometimes with the aid of a mirror, or just some physical prodding, I feel like I’ve been put through a gym finishing school. If you’re working at a desk all day, chances are that you also need the corrective exercises to combat aches and pains that come from rounded shoulders and a slouched back. The eventual aim is that motions such as squats can be turned into deadlifts and other forms of weight-training: women don’t have the hormone levels to end up bulky, and training in this way in fact helps to contour the body and burn fat quickly. Another trainer tells me the Holy Grail of fitness is not being able to run 10km, but being able to do two full pull-ups, which lengthens the torso, tones the arms and build strength simultaneously. We try it with the help of a slingshot-type band looped around the overhead bars, that gives me a leg-up. Weirdly it feels more intuitive and fun than relentless cardio; it’s also something I’d never be brave enough to try on my own. Is it possible to overtrain? Yes. The team tell me that city types are notorious for exorcising stressful days with gruelling workouts. With a coach, it’s easier to optimize your routine, save time and exercise without causing injury. In weeks, I’m standing taller, reaching further and enjoying the camaraderie too. Who are you calling ‘Barbie legs’? Limehouse Marina Elite, limehousemarinaelite.com

Berry good This winter, the Association of Berry Growers is running a campaign to encourage us to add more berries to our diets, highlighting the value of recipes such as layered berry breakfast pots, berry pancakes and goats’ cheese and raspberry truffles. RESTAURANT REVIEW
For Goodness Saké Ippudo focuses on ramen, bringing Japan’s “soul food” to Crossrail Place and doing magical things with gyoza and miso WORDS: CHARLOTTE PHILLIPS
I
t’s Wednesday night at 7pm and Ippudo in Crossrail Place is so heaving that we have to wait for a table and eventually opt for a shared one. The restaurant is lively and low-key, with an open kitchen and bar seating available. Décor is interesting and thematic: picture low wooden tables and walls covered in traditional white and red ramen spoons. We started with cocktails (the saké and ginbased Samurai had a real kick) and edamame, which retrospectively we didn’t need as the meal proved to be so filling. The service was strong, and the waiter explained that certain dishes on the menu were only available in Canary Wharf (Ippudo has another London branch in Central Saint Giles) such as the utterly excellent takidofu: a rich, spicy pork-bone based soup mixed with miso paste and topped with thin crispy noodles and deliciously soft tofu. Despite that, our favourite starter was the chicken and vegetable gyoza, which we ordered seared rather than deep-fried, kidding ourselves they were healthy – unlikely, but they achieved perfectly balanced crispy edges and a succulent texture. Ramen, seen as soul food in Japan, is Ippudo’s pièce de résistance, and absolutely every table had opted for it. We chose the shiromaru hakata classic ramen, a pork-based dish, and the aka vegetarian ramen, which came with tofu and an abundance of
interesting vegetables like mushrooms and seaweed, and an optional poached egg on top. Both were utterly delicious; fragrant and substantial. The (thin, slightly al dente) noodle-to-soup ratio was perfect and the pieces of pork loin in the shiromaru were perfectly tender. While that dish was richer, the
“Certain dishes on the menu are only available in Canary Wharf” vegetable one was incredibly full of flavour. Despite being full (we couldn’t even take advantage of telling the waiter “Kaedama, please,” a fabulous system which would have brought extra noodles for any remaining soup), we persevered on to a final course, intrigued by the unusual offering of caramelised sweet potato served with fried banana and vanilla ice cream. We were surprised to find the sweet potato was served cold, but the accompanying banana topped with bitter dark chocolate was excellent, though a small portion; almost a garnish. Crossrail Place is special in offering global cuisine: you can visit India, Mexico, and, with Ippudo, Japan. Ippudo provides a relaxed environment, delicious food and an authentic taste of the other side of the world. Ippudo, Crossrail Place, ippudo.co.uk

MYTH or MIRACLE? To supplement or not to supplement? That is the question. Popping vitamins is hugely popular among those looking to take their health into their own hands. But is it doing more harm than good? WORDS: charlotte phillips
T
hanks to the internet, we’re all ‘doctors’. We Google our symptoms, identify a deficiency and prescribe a remedying concoction, including vitamins (like vitamin A, B and C), minerals (such as selenium and calcium), and supplements (think fish oil and evening primrose oil). We’re often incorrect, but thanks to excellent marketing and the desire to ‘fix’ ourselves, supplementing our diets with nonprescribed vitamins; in pill, liquid or cream-based form, has become a ‘thing’, with the logic that supplements counter an unhealthy lifestyle, or improve a healthy eating regime: if a small amount of, say, vitamin C is good, then more is better. Successful due to a growing awareness of health science and easierthan-ever access to vitamins
s l u x u ryl o n d o n . c o . u k s
from across the world, the global nutrition and supplements market is worth $104 billion, according to a report in the Nutrition Business Journal. Self-prescription is only set to grow, yet there remains a great deal of confusion about what is needed when. According to the NHS, we need 13 vitamins to maintain health – vitamins A, C, D, E, K and eight B vitamins; most of which are naturally present in foods, and yet many of us are taking supplements we can’t even pronounce, like bee pollen, ginseng and baobab. “Food today isn’t the same quality as it was years ago,” says Francesca Liparoti, nutritional therapist at the Wellness Centre at Reebok Sports Club in Canary Wharf. “It’s been really depleted of nutrients, through transportation, storage and soil quality.” Working life, too, is problematic. “Constant stress uses up B vitamins and magnesium,” she says. Liparoti herself takes (and
CANARY WHARF | 73
would recommend) “a good quality multivitamin, fish oil, a probiotic, magnesium – women need more – and vitamin D”. Liparoti tells me she hasn’t had a cold in years, but would supplement vitamin C if she felt one coming on. However, she adds: “supplements should add to a healthy diet, not replace it, and Mandy Saven, head of food, beverage and hospitality at Stylus, agrees “one needs a realistic view on what these products can and can’t do. healthy people over-supplement. A supplement can provide 100 per cent of your recommended daily allowance (RDA) of that particular vitamin. However, attaining RDA of, for example, vitamin A, which supports healthy vision and immunity, only requires half a carrot. Surplus water-soluble vitamins leave the body in urine, making them a waste of money but not harmful, but fat-soluble vitamins, like A and D, build up in the body. Downsides of too much vitamin A include bone problems and headaches, while too much vitamin D can cause kidney stones. Taking too much iron, zinc and selenium – all good in certain doses – can

also be harmful, but Liparoti says it is quite hard to reach toxic levels. While Liparoti recommends supplements, she says self-purchasing them can be dangerous. “Quality really matters,” she says, and it’s always worth seeking reputable advice. “Not only will some poorly made supplements just pass through the digestive system, but some have fillers, bindings and colourings in them – all rubbish ingredients which have to go through the liver.” As a general rule, the top quality supplements cost more, but are worth it. An additional downside to supplementing is taking a concoction of vitamins which don’t work well together. Over-supplementing zinc can cause copper deficiencies, which, somewhat pointlessly, means one would subsequently supplement copper. Equally, some vitamins require others to work effectively. “People supplement calcium for healthy bones, but without vitamin D and K and magnesium, that calcium will reach a high level in the bloodstream, and won’t reach the bones properly,” says Liparoti.
surface and aren’t absorbed. While creams using hydrolysed collagen composed of smaller molecules are worth attempting, Dr Russo says they still can’t really “penetrate deep into the skin’s tissue”. Oral collagen-enhancing supplements “do not have medically proven benefits”, he says, but many of Dr Russo’s patients have found the Skinade liquid (available at his clinic) to work well. “It can go directly into the bloodstream, which feeds the skin,” he says, adding that oral supplements help with balancing deficiencies in vitamin C or D. One effective way to use vitamins and minerals to stimulate collagen production, says Dr Russo, is injecting them through a treatment called mesotherapy, where they can really penetrate. Use of lasers and rollers are also considered helpful. The world of vitamins and supplements is still evolving, and Saven of Stylus says she is “eagerly watching to see how the field of nutrigenomics will impact the supplement landscape”, as well as new emerging brands: “We’re seeing a lot of plant-based
“People supplement calcium for healthy bones, but without vitamin D and K and magnesium, that calcium will reach a high level in the bloodstream, and won’t reach the bones properly” “It can do more damage than good.” Another reason people supplement, health concerns aside, is to perfect skin appearance. Collagen, the protein which makes skin look smooth and firm, is produced “through a chemical reaction requiring vitamin C and six or seven amino acids”, says Dr Luca Russo, founder of Canary Wharf’s Rejuvenation Clinic & Medispa. Collagen production naturally declines in our midtwenties, so certain creams and oral supplements claim to stimulate collage production on a cellular level, using ingredients like peptides, vitamin C, green tea extract and vitamin E. However, many creams simply sit on the skin’s
vitamin brands come to the fore, and a renewed interest in spices such as turmeric,” she adds. Generally, health-conscious consumers should start with focusing on healthy, nutrient-rich foods. Before buying magnesium, try eating more nuts and avocados, and before splashing out on chromium, opt for broccoli. If you’re still deficient in some areas or feeling rundown, supplements can absolutely help. Vitamin D in particular seems largely advisable – but do consult your doctor, opt for top quality, and don’t prescribe a concoction yourself. Welcome to miami Miami’s energy buzzes against a backdrop of Art Deco architecture and enviable coastline by day, but by night, an unexpected oasis of calm awaits within the walls of Asian-inspired hotel The Setai worDS: melissa emerson

TRAVEL
W
e ensured our arrival in Miami was as subtle as possible by pulling up to The Setai hotel in a convertible Ford Mustang. Being in the sunshine state, what other colour could it be than bright yellow? Although Miami is a vibrant and energetic city, we had chosen the Asian-inspired hotel for its zen reputation – making it a welcome retreat after lively days out on the beach and evenings spent drinking and dining during our three-night stay. With the car swiftly whisked away by the hotel’s hyper-attentive attendants, we entered the highceilinged lobby under a door with a faint smudge above it – not a design fault, the hotel is far too slick for that – but a blessing by Buddhist monks, who, having originally blessed the hotel in 2005, recently returned to the hotel to honour its 10th anniversary in January 2015. After taking a moment to enjoy a lemongrass tea and appreciate the authentic ancient stone table
holding a vast bouquet of 1,000 roses – the most romantic welcome decoration I’ve ever seen – we ventured up to explore our Art Deco studio suite. As opposed to the Ocean suites which sit in the more modern 40-storey glass tower, the Art Deco versions are located in what was originally the Dempsey Vanderbilt Hotel – a classic 1930s building set a little further back. Art Deco architecture is still very visible in Miami and it not being an ideal city for parking, we later hired bikes and took a ride along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue to see the pretty pastel facades in all their glory. The suite itself was largely decorated in dark wood and light fabrics, with everything including the bed and lamps positioned just so, to maximise the feng shui. The rooms are perfectly comfortable, starting at around 580sq ft with a lounge area and his and hers sinks, but those staying longer should opt for the larger split-level spaces. A dip in the deep black granite tub with Acqua di Parma bath goodies to hand is highly recommended before dinner, and

as it was our first night we took advantage of the hotel’s chauffeured car service – available to guests within a reasonable radius and hours – and set off to explore. Dropped off by Lincoln Road Mall – a pedestrianised hub of shops, restaurants and a weekly farmers’ market worth taking a look at during the day – we then took a private elevator up to the penthouse level of a car park. Juvia’s rooftop terrace, with a lush and green vertical garden on one side and the city lights on the other, was as unexpected as it was striking. We toasted our first proper Miami view with a Juvia Lemonade – gin, blueberry preserves and fresh lemon sour – and a champagne-topped Bubbling Bonito. Floor-toceiling glass covers the restaurant interior, so don’t fret about missing the view if you can’t sit outside. The menu is largely Japanese in substance – fish lovers rejoice – with French and Peruvian twists thanks to the varied cultural backgrounds and training of its three talented chefs, Nobu alumni among them. Memorable dishes, all as precisely plated as they were cooked, were hamachi espuma made with Japanese yellowtail and a tongue-tingling spicy yuzu kosho espuma sauce, Alaskan king crab leg and salmon nashi with truffle oil. The tapas-style sharing dishes and understated glamour make the restaurant a great place to socialise.
“The tapas-style sharing dishes and understated glamour make it a great place to socialise” After breakfasting in the water-filled courtyard of The Setai the next morning – prepare to practice some restraint when you see the buffet with everything acceptable to eat for breakfast on display – it was time to explore the three infinity pools, each at a different temperature and with direct access to a private beach area, and the spa by Parisian spa brand THÉMAÉ. If you make it up early enough, a complimentary 60-minute beach yoga session takes place at 8:30am Friday-Sunday, or alternatively spend an hour as I did, enjoying some lighter stretching with the spa’s signature Ancient Balinese massage. Designed to relieve areas of tension and calm the mind – cue sleep-inducing music – it will have you floating serenely down to the pool afterwards. Here, once your day bed is prepped with as many towels as you’d usually go through in a week, water and a cooling spray are provided and

you can kick back and enjoy the glorious Miami sun, with table service of course. Before it was back to the courtyard for an al fresco dinner at The Setai Grill, the bar became an impromptu stop-off for a spot of Japanese whisky tasting – easily competition for the carefully curated cocktails. Dinner is designed to be taken as three or four courses, with wine pairings optional, so a tomato salad with marinated local hearts of palm and avocado seemed like the way to ease into the meatier mains. Next, take your pick of Wagyu beef with skirt steak, strip loin and petite filet mignon varieties sitting alongside other New York dry-aged cuts for a main and bring in an oriental twist with sides of wasabi spinach, Asian mushrooms and sauces such as the citrus-based ponzu with added truffle. Do reserve room for the miraculously crafted and delicate yuzu citrus curd tart – it’s almost hard to believe the delicate sugar glass-topped creation came from the same kitchen as the robust grills. Our final morning was spent at Nikki Beach, and Miami can boast the original beach club. It was founded in 1998 and the reputation of its Sunday brunch extravaganza precedes it. Thanks to resident DJs, costumed performers, overflowing food and mojito pitchers, it’s become the biggest day of the week on South Beach. Unfortunately we’d be out of town for the party – clearly poor scheduling on our part – but we nonetheless witnessed the club’s tendency to impress guests. To help us decipher the menu, an enormous board of fish of the day – including a mammoth live lobster – was paraded out. Those who dare, myself not included, are more than welcome to snap a selfie with the critter. Some much needed post-feast lounging followed in raised canopy beds among the palm trees and with the club pitched right on the sand, you’ll feel like sticking around. A sentiment we held about Miami as a whole. With architectural gems, fine dining and luxury beachfront hotels with impeccable service like The Setai, you’re never quite ready to move on, but the yellow Mustang and the ocean road to the Florida Keys awaits. Chalet Shar Pei, Val d’Isère, France
Haus Alpina, Klosters, Switzerland This luxurious penthouse apartment in the Swiss village of Klosters is all about elegant interiors, double-height ceilings and The White Company home comforts. No wonder, considering it is the winter holiday retreat of the brand’s founder Chrissie Rucker MBE and her husband Nick Wheeler (founder of Charles Tyrwhitt). The crisp sheets and down pillows, super-soft towels, scented candles and bath products available to guests showcase this chalet as a family home, as well as a business, and Rucker and Wheeler have poured care and love into their Alpine bolthole, designed with the help of award-winning interiors guru, Nicky Dobree. There are two living rooms in the apartment complete with open fireplaces, as well as five ensuite bedrooms and an impressive master bedroom with roll-top bath. The chalet has a formal dining area for 12 as well as a snug Swiss Stübli where breakfast is served in front of a crackling fire. It benefits from the services of a private chef and housekeeper, as well as a private driver in resort. It may be tucked away ten minutes from the resort centre (above the slightly incongruous but convenient sights of a supermarket) but it offers privacy and relaxation. Klosters shares a ski area with Davos, with the two combined offering 320km of pistes. Although the resort is perhaps best known for its après-ski and affinity with the Royal Family, this place has phenomenal off-piste possibilities, much of it liftaccessed. For less experiend skiers Haus Alpina can set you up with experienced guides offering one-to-one tuition, who can help you find the best powder runs, and back at the chalet there is a treatment room where reflexology and massages can be arranged. Seven nights in Haus Alpina costs from £20,000, based on ten people sharing, including dedicated staff for six days, champagne on arrival, breakfast, tea, canapés and dinner plus daily housekeeping. Flights and transfers excluded. A six-day adult ski pass in Klosters-Davos costs CHF299 (approximately £194). haus-alpina-klosters.com
Us Brits have a long-standing love affair with Val d’Isère, and one that shows no signs of abating. Whether it’s the vast 300km Espace Killy ski area shared with Tignes, the reliable snow, lift service for off-piste routes, renowned restaurants or thriving nightlife, something about this resort keeps pulling us back. The brand new Chalet Shar Pei, from Scott Dunn, offers the perfect base from which to explore the resort, sitting just steps away from the Bellevarde chairlift. It has four en-suite bedrooms, an indoor swimming pool and hammam. The traditionalists will love its wood cladding and exposed brickwork, while its large top-floor terrace with views of the mountains is a social spot for catching the afternoon sun. Two of the chalet bedrooms are big enough for cots, making Shar Pei ideal for groups of friends or families, who have the choice of Scott Dunn’s private nannies or Explorer kids club. The chalet comes with a team of staff including private chef, host and in-resort driver who will ferry guests around Val d’Isère in a smart 4x4. Yet, the biggest selling point for this chalet is the world-class skiing right on its doorstep: Bellevarde is home to two of Val d’Isère’s famous downhill courses, including the Face that was used for the 1992 Winter Olympics and the 2009 World Championships. Scott Dunn offers seven nights at Chalet Shar Pei from £1,525pp based on full occupancy including return British Airways flights from the UK, luxury coach transfers, private chef, host and Scott Dunn in-resort driver service. A six-day adult ski pass in Val d’Isère costs €260 (approximately £183). scottdunn.com

Chalet Jejalp, Morzine, France One of the most popular French resorts, Morzine is relatively new to the luxury chalet market but Consensio is changing all that with its new sixbedroom Chalet Jejalp. The chocolate-box style cabin sleeps ten adults in five en-suite bedrooms, and four children in a gloriously snug bunkroom. It has been built around a central atrium housing a show-stopping double-height glass wine tower rising from the ground floor through the centre of the chalet with separate sections for red wine, white wine, rosé and champagne, creating a real focal point for guests. There is a main sitting room, with open fireplace, as well as a large cinema room, a wellstocked bar with pool table, open-plan kitchen and dining area with large terrace and a sauna, sunken Jacuzzi and gym. Morzine is conveniently situated, only an hour and a half’s drive from Geneva, and just on the Portes du Soleil circuit with 650km of pistes that appeal mainly to intermediate, ‘cruisy’ skiers and families. Chalet Jejalp is situated just out of town, but with a private 4x4 chauffeur on hand this is a luxury rather than inconvenience. Consensio Chalets offers Chalet Jejalp from £19,170 per week, based on ten adults and four children sharing six rooms on a fully inclusive basis. This price includes use of all the chalet facilities, all meals and an in-resort chauffeur. A six-day adult ski pass in Morzine costs €243 (approximately £171), consensiochalets.co.uk

Pine Lodge Dolomites, Selva Gardena, Italy

With the dramatic Dolomites as a backdrop, and sitting within the famous 1,220km Sella Ronda ski area, Pine Lodge Dolomites is a rarity in Italy, and was completed in summer 2014. The chalet’s owners make a formidable team: Susanna Scott is a British interior designer and her Italian husband Georg Planker is a successful hotelier. Styled with four en-suite bedrooms, the property has its own media room, sauna, outdoor hot tub and brand new 3m x 7m indoor infinity pool – and, love it or loathe it – its own PlayStation 4 console. Its walls are adorned with artworks by local artists Aron and Gehard Demetz, who have a close personal connection with the owners. On the staff front, guests have access to a personal chef, butler and housekeeper, as well as ‘adventure concierge’ Andrea Planker, a qualified ski and mountain bike instructor who can arrange and escort guests on a whole range of activities, from skiing to tobogganing to quad biking by moonlight. Selva is one of the main – and best – bases to explore the Sella Ronda, a relaxing and extraordinarily extensive circuit of pistes that put France’s famous Three Valleys to shame, and the area is known for its familyfriendly attitude, with a range of great value restaurants. Seven nights from €15,000 (approximately £10,583) based on maximum of eight sharing (with a reduction for parties of less than eight guests), including daily buffet breakfast, daily afternoon tea, four-course evening meals, and the services of the adventure concierge. Adventures in Luxury Gone are the days when Abu Dhabi was just a stopover city for those en route to the East. Today, the capital of the UAE is a must-see destination in its own right, offering the perfect mix of luxury, culture and adventure
Luxury Living
Steeped in Tradition
Abu Dhabi is home to some of the most luxurious and ground-breaking hotels in the world. None are more recognisable than Emirates Palace, a national landmark stretching a whole kilometre from wing to wing, and the third most expensive hotel ever built. Next door, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers offers fabulous views from its café-restaurant, Observation Deck at 300, the highest viewing gallery in the city. There are views of a different kind from the ultra-modern Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, where restaurants and rooms look out at the super-yachts of Yas Marina, and onto the tarmac of Yas Marina Circuit, where the final race of the F1 season plays out each November. For something slower paced, consider Zaya Nurai Island, a 32-villa private island retreat minutes from Saadiyat Island. Or Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara, a five-star sanctuary plucked from the pages of One Thousand and One Nights. Built to resemble an Arabian fortress, it offers sweeping desert views and a raft of excursions from sunrise camel treks and 4x4 dune-bashing to falconry displays and campfire barbecues.
Among the luxury lies a rich cultural heritage that celebrates the past and strides towards the future. Traditional dhow cruises through the city’s natural mangroves teach visitors about the emirate’s pearldiving history. The ‘Oasis City’ of Al Ain, just 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi city, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest cities in Arabia. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – fourth in TripAdvisor’s list of the world’s top 25 landmarks – may be modern in construction but is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular religious buildings in the world, capable of holding more than 40,000 worshippers. As to the future, construction of the eagerly anticipated Louvre Abu Dhabi is well underway, with the Jean Nouveldesigned museum set to establish Abu Dhabi as the cultural hub of the Middle East. That is such a reward in itself and will certainly make an impact on me and the life I lead.” Temperley will assist in the organisation’s mission to give women who are suffering extreme economic hardship, particularly in war or postwar environments, the tools to build a more

Although she has faced a different set of challenges in her own journey, business advice is one thing Temperley has plenty of. “Hard work, dedication and perseverance are key, as is staying true to yourself but knowing when and how to evolve with the times.” As well as four ready-to-wear collections a year, Temperley London also launches two collections a year under its Temperley Bridal branch and has in more recent times seen a move into the lifestyle arena with luxe kaftans and scented candles. And it doesn’t seem to be stopping there. The designer is tight-lipped, but, “There are lots of exciting things in the pipeline,” Temperley promises us. She goes on: “Watch this space.” As for right now, the Temperley London spring/ summer 15 show revealed white appliquéd dresses, fitting for the Bohemian style the brand has come to be known for. Championing craftsmanship and artisan techniques, inspiration this season was drawn from 18th century Spitalfield silks and Indian chintzes among other things. The resurrection of heritage techniques and fabrics is clearly something Temperley values, counting among the unique personal pieces she owns a
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
“collection of vintage silk dressing gowns and 1920s embroidered shawls: they are timeless.” The attention her collections garner each season is, admirably, not taken for granted. “Spreading the word and teaching people about their lives is what I aim to do as an ambassador of Women for Women International. I believe I’m very fortunate to have a voice and if I can make a small difference by creating awareness on issues that I’m very passionate about then that’s all I can wish for.” Since 1993, Women for Women International has helped over 400,000 women and linked more than 340,000 women survivors of war with sponsors globally. Anyone can join its sponsorship programme by contributing £22 a month, plus a one-off fee of £25. In Temperley’s parting words, “everyone can make a difference.” Surely, a new year’s resolution for us all. womenforwomen.org.uk; temperleylondon.com

VISUAL ARTS Take a break to explore and enjoy Canary Wharf’s temporary exhibitions and permanent art collection around the estate
Nathaniel Rackowe: The Luminous City
11 January – 12 February Lobby, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf Open daily / FREE To coincide with Winter Lights @ Canary Wharf, the first sculpture exhibition of the year in the Lobby of One Canada Square is The Luminous City, showing large-scale installations by British artist Nathaniel Rackowe. Nathaniel’s practice is a continued investigation into the interplay of light and structure in the built environment. Examining the visual experience of moving through an urban landscape, he seeks to capture the transcendental moments the city provides, using industrial materials such as fluorescent tubing, breeze blocks and bitumen. His architectural forms, uncompromisingly minimal, have the raw beauty of shafts of streetlight falling on wet pavements. The exhibition is curated by House of the Nobleman, a London-based

Jessica Marsh
Design, Jubilee Walk Jessica’s jewellery collection explores the possibility of visualising the sense of touch. The central elements represent an individual fleeting moment of a hand’s touch, highlighting the tiny detailed skin texture that tells us where our body ends and the outer world begins. Cast in bronze, the skin, usually moving and flexible, has become something permanent and rigid. The outer silverwork is a scaled-up detail of a section of this intricate skin, and acts both as support of the centrepiece as well as visual and textural contrast. jessicarosemarsh.com

Winter Lights Festival @ Canary Wharf 11-22 January Throughout Canary Wharf Daily 4-9pm / free
The sculptures, structures and installations on display are the creations of some of the most innovative artists and designers around today, presenting work in a diversity of different forms of light technology. Together the artists represent four continents, showcasing projects that are interactive, performance or visual spectacles to be admired from close up or afar. Many pieces explore how we communicate in the modern world. Julius Popp’s bit.fall taps into live news feeds creating a digital typography waterfall and Bitone’s Totem responds to the presence of mobile phone signals around it. Other installations such as Jen Lewin’s The Pool encourages viewers
to physically touch and engage with it and create visual and audio reactions. Best seen after 4pm, all the installations and light effects come alive throughout the evening until 9pm, so join us and experience a wealth of inventive and spectacular creativity illuminating Canary Wharf. Appealing to art lovers, lighting enthusiasts, families and the young and old, there is something for everyone as soon as dusk falls and all for free. Due to their nature light installations do use energy. Canary Wharf is committed to a ‘green policy’ of reducing energy usage and recycling as much as is possible. Therefore, all the installations are made as energy-efficient as possible, using mains power instead of generators and using LED lighting. Transportation of artworks and equipment is combined to reduce the number of journeys, using electric vehicles around the estate, and local contractors are used as much as possible. We also encourage visitors to use public transport to visit the event.

Fun, fun, fun (and it’s not a T-bird)
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
MOTORING
You don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy a sports car, writes Matthew Carter. You just need a Mazda MX-5…
S
o you’ve just spent almost £200k on a glorious Italian supercar. You’ve got head-turning looks to match the headsnapping acceleration. Life is good. Except that every time you go out in the thing, you attract the wrong kind of attention from just about everyone. The police will want to make sure you don’t stray one mile an hour over the limit, while you never want to leave it unattended in case a jealous low-life decides to key the paintwork. You’ve got a large hole in your bank account, the insurance premiums are absurd and it’s a pig to drive in traffic. And given visibility out is terrible, parking the thing is a nightmare. Here’s the thing: you don’t need to spend anything like that amount to have fun behind the wheel. You could, for instance, follow the principles of what’s called Bangernomics, where you buy an interesting old car for a few hundred quid and drive it into the ground. When it dies, you scrap it
and buy another old banger. If that approach seems a little extreme, then you could do far worse than shell out a mere £20k and buy a new Mazda MX-5. Granted performance isn’t quite in the supercar league, but it’s quick enough and doesn’t draw too much attention to itself. And parking is a doddle. What began life as a concept car – Mazda eXperimental project five – the MX-5 was an instant hit when the production version appeared in 1989. It was, pure and simple, an update on the traditional British sports cars, an MGB or Lotus Elan for the modern age. It was lightweight and nimble with a beautifully balanced rear-wheel drive chassis. The hood could be lowered quickly, it was easy to drive and promised fun by the bucket-load. Little wonder it became the fastest selling sports car in the world while today, with nearly a million sold worldwide, it is the world’s most successful twoseater to boot.
CANARY WHARF | 101
Subsequent generations continued the fun theme but gradually put on weight as extra safety equipment and more and more creature comforts were added. The last generation MX-5 might have thought it was still a youngster but the beer belly suggested otherwise. Thankfully for the latest, 4th generation MX-5, Mazda has gone back to basics. It is shorter, lower, wider and lighter than its immediate forebear. There’s extensive use of aluminium in the suspension components (backed up by plenty of high strength steel in the body for torsional rigidity and crash protection) and the front wings are also aluminium. Another weight-saving move is to provide a manual, rather than electrically operated, fabric hood. This is really not a problem as the hood can be lowered in under five seconds from the driver’s seat: just release the clip from the top of the windscreen and flip it back until it clicks into
s l u x u ry l o n d o n . c o . u k s
its home behind the seats. You can even go topless on the move. Mazda reckons it’s around 100kg lighter than its predecessor, but there’s no lack of equipment here: this is no back-to-basics Caterham or hair shirt Lotus.
“All are petrol-powered and naturally aspirated, no turbos here thank you very much” There are two engines on offer – a 1.5-litre that the purists reckon is closest to the first of the line, or the more powerful 2.0-litre version driven here – plus various trim levels. All are petrol-powered and naturally aspirated, no turbos here thank you very much. Alongside a 600+ hp V10 supercar, the 160 hp
MOTORING
of the little Mazda might seem insignificant. But it’s the way the MX-5 uses that power that counts. It’s an eager little thing, keen to rev and to make all the right noises from its raspy exhaust. You might not be going at warp-factor speeds, but with the wind in your hair and your bum sailing a few feet from the ground it feels quicker than it is. Best of all, you don’t need to spend all the time looking in the rear-view mirror to see if your exuberance has been spotted by a plain-clothed BMW.
“It even rides well for a sports car, firm but with an unexpected suppleness” It’s equally as engaging when it comes to cornering. This is a simple, mechanical car. There are some safety-based traction aids, but essentially this is a car where the driver has control over progress rather than nannying electronics. The six-speed manual gearshift has a switch-like short throw and snicks into gear with a delightful positivity. The steering is direct while the rear end can be steered using the throttle pedal, though the standard limited slip differential helps boost traction out of corners. Essentially, though, the MX-5 delivers old school rear-drive excitement in a world where front-orfour-wheel drive is the (dull) norm. It even rides well for a sports car, firm but supple. This is a car for long journeys as well as for
hooning around the lanes. What’s not to like? Well it is a small car and the cockpit is what you might call cosy – those broader than average will find themselves forever banging elbows on the doors and shins on the sills. The boot, too, is a touch bijou, but just about perfect for a couple of squashy overnight bags. Again, this is not a problem: the Mazda’s boot space is bigger than any mid-engined sports car you could mention, with the honourable exception of the Porsche Boxster. The Boxster reference is significant. Outright performance and image aside, the MX-5 matches it in so many respects, yet does so at a fraction of the price. And that really encapsulates what the MX-5 is all about. With no direct rivals at the moment – the Toyota GT86 has a similar fun factor but is a closed coupé rather than a soft-top – the Mazda has the budget end of the market to itself. For a little over £20k, the SE-L Nav gives you just about everything you need, including climate control, DAB radio, alloy wheels and satellite navigation via a dash-mounted tablet. You don’t need anything else. And you certainly don’t need to spend any more to blow the cobwebs away every time you go out for a drive.
VEHICLE SPECS Car: Mazda MX-5 2.0 SE-L Nav Price: £20,695 Engine: Front-mounted, 1,998cc, in-line ‘four’ Power: 160 hp Performance: 133mph max, 0-60mph in 7.3 secs Drive: Rear-wheel drive, six-speed manual transmission
For Mazda read Fiat So you like the idea of the MX-5, but find it hard (for what ever reason) to admit to owning a Mazda. Simple. Wait for the forthcoming Fiat 124 Spider. This is an MX-5 wearing Fiat clothes (the styling is a nod to the original 124 Spider of the 1960s) and powered by a Fiat turbo-charged 1.4-litre engine. Built in Japan on the same lines as the Mazda, the Fiat should reach our showroom in the second half of 2016.

A
s we move into 2016, it is a good time to take stock and see what the coming year could hold for the property market in Docklands. We are coming off the back of yet another strong year of growth in prices in the area, which coupled with the shortage of stock has made for a challenging market for both buyers and sellers. Transaction levels have remained high, but it has required both buyers and sellers to be flexible on pricing and move dates in order for chains to be completed. With interest rates looking to stay at their historically low levels for the foreseeable future, the owner occupier market looks like it will continue to perform well throughout 2016. Looking at 2016, the biggest hurdle that the property market faces is yet another change in the Stamp Duty regime which was announced in the Autumn Statement by the chancellor. With Docklands being a prime area for buy to let investors, what impact is an additional three per cent going to have on transaction levels? One thing is for sure: if you are looking to sell an ideal rental property you would be best advised to get it on the market as quickly as possible, enabling investors the opportunity to complete the purchase prior to the changes kicking in on 1 April 2016. While no doubt over time investors will simply get used to absorbing this additional tax, in the short term we may well see a reduction in investor transactions, meaning the first quarter could be extremely busy and important to anyone looking to buy or sell a second property.
FASHION FOR THE HOME Roberto Cavalli has made a name for himself in couture, but now, for the first time, the Italian fashion designer is bringing a stunning range of hand-made furniture to the UK. New luxury brand, Kings of Chelsea opened its London showroom late last year, and at that time debuted Cavalli’s luxurious furniture offering within the new 1,800 sqft store. Cavalli himself worked very closely with JC Passion, one of the finest Italian furniture manufacturers, to create a range that’s divided into two distinctive collections, Essential and Iconic. The Essential collection adopts a bold approach with primary colours and distinguishing prints, while the Iconic range is given a classical Cavalli touch by using gold, leather and bronze element, alongside a luxuriant oak wood wenge finish. kofc.co.uk

For the first time, Pantone has chosen two shades – pale pink Rose Quartz and Serenity, a cool blue – for its annual Colour of the Year selection. An authority on colour science and colour standards for design industries, the Pantone Color Institute’s selection stems from research into colour influences. “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted colour trends throughout all other areas of design,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. This includes interiors, and these shades are ideal for evoking peace and tranquillity – introduce the shades at home with coloured kitchen items, statement chairs, rugs and upholstery. pantone.com

NEWS
LETTINGS CHRISTOPHER PAXTON,
“The new three per cent increase in Stamp Duty for buy to let properties and second homes, while good for first time buyers, could actually have quite a negative impact on buy to let investors and subsequently, the rental market. This may ultimately lead to a shortage of good quality properties or an increase in rent, which could make it much more difficult for tenants.” – Jamie Lester, Haus Properties, hausproperties.co.uk

head of lettings at Knight Frank Canary Wharf, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market
T
he private rental sector is continuing to grow in size, with around 5.4 million, or 20 per cent of households now being let out to private tenants. There has been a generational shift. More households are now living in rented accommodation for longer, and while housing affordability is certainly a factor here, rented accommodation is also becoming an established flexible form of tenure, an attribute welcomed especially among younger workers. This was confirmed in last year’s Tenant Survey, with 38 per cent of under-35s saying they didn’t want a mortgage or that renting suited their lifestyle, rising to 49 per cent for those aged under 25. The number of under-45s living in the sector has more than doubled, to nearly 3.1 million over the last decade, and those aged 25-34 now account for nearly 37 per cent of PRS households, up from 32 per cent in 2009, according to the English Housing Survey. In terms of supply, the private rental sector is largely made up of private landlords, many of whom have one or two properties. This direct investment in property was driven by the rise in the availability of buy-to-let mortgage loans in the late 1990s. New regulations on mortgage interest relief for buy-tolet investors from 2017 could lead to a modest slowing in growth in this market. However, this will likely be overshadowed by the rapid expansion of large-scale investment in the sector, with institutional investors such as pension and investment funds increasingly looking to purchase and hold purpose-built rental accommodation over the longer-term – bringing the UK in line with markets such as the US and Denmark where residential rented accommodation is a specific asset class. Knight Frank’s Investor Survey, one of the most comprehensive surveys of large-scale investors in the private rented sector, indicates that investment is set to treble over the next five years. Knight Frank estimates current investment to be around £15 billion, rising to £50 billion by the end of 2020. *This is an exert from Knight Frank LLP Tenant Survey 2015/2016, knightfrank.com/research/the-uk-tenant-survey-201516

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE:
JLL’s ANNUAL RESIDENTIAL FORECASTS Diana Alam, Head of Residential Development Sales, JLL
1. What external factors will influence the UK housing market in 2016? 2016 should provide a sounder base for British businesses, consumers, home owners, home buyers, renters and landlords following 2015, which was disrupted by the General Election. We expect UK house price growth of five per cent in 2016 with transaction volumes rising to 1.28 million. Looking further ahead, despite the EU referendum and the likelihood of further interest rate rises, 2017 should be another year of positive economic expansion and improved household finances and confidence. This backdrop should lead to greater UK housing market activity, reasonably strong house price growth and a continuation of development volume growth in 2017. Overseas economies and unrest pose some risk but fundamentally the UK economy is in a stronger and more stable
112 | CANARY WHARF
place than almost anywhere else in the world. Higher value London markets, which are being rocked by punitive levels of stamp duty, face an uneasy and vulnerable short-term outlook, but most regional mainstream housing markets are looking in good health. Positive economics and more secure household confidence and finances, alongside insufficient new housing delivery will place upward pressure on prices and will lead to more transactions. 2. How can home owners, home buyers, renters and landlords best prepare for the year ahead? The 2016 housing market will be a market of stability and continuity as the dust settles from the General Election in May and the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement announced on November 25. Repercussions from both have been felt across the UK housing market, but most
markedly in London with the prime market suffering at the hands of the increased rate of stamp duty affecting homes purchased above £1m, and buy to let investors and second home purchasers suffering a three per cent increase in SDLT. In spite of this, we are confident that the London market will be the strongest regional UK performer with Greater London expected to demonstrate house price growth of up to 5.5 per cent. In terms of advice for owners, home buyers, renter and landlords we believe it is a good time to speak to a financial advisor if you have a mortgage in place and are looking to find the best lender. Although we know interest rates only have one way to go, it’s worth taking advice to find out if you have the best product. It’s also a good time to speak to agents on their perspective on the market and the best areas and developments to invest in.

s we prepare to embark upon 2016, thoughts turn to announcements affecting the property industry which were made this year and which will come into effect over the course of 2016. The property market will no doubt see an adjustment in April when the Stamp Duty is set to change for buyers wishing to purchase a second home or investment property. The tiered structure in stamp duty for higher value properties has already resulted in a 25 per cent decrease in transaction numbers. We are used to seeing landlords putting their properties on the market with tenants in situ, but the majority will usually wait until tenants reach around the middle to end stage of their tenancy. As soon as George Osborne announced the intended changes to Stamp Duty, landlords realised that they may miss out on around 50 per cent of their target audience if they delay selling until after April 2016. One thing is certain – for the first quarter of next year many investors will want a speedy transaction to avoid the added cost and many landlords will place their properties on the market ahead of time in order to secure a buyer. These factors alone will fuel the market for a short while, but as with any adjustments the dust will eventually settle and the market will readjust. Over what time-frame though – no one knows.
016 could be a very interesting year for the housing market and there are several key changes that will particularly affect the capital. The way buy-to-let rental income is taxed is changing, as is the stamp duty on second homes and investment properties. These changes – coupled with the recent introduction of capital gains tax for overseas investors – are a clear attempt by the government to make investing in the UK housing market less appealing. The changes are also likely to have the biggest impact in London as the City’s property market benefits from substantial international, as well as domestic, investment. I understand the sentiment behind trying to make the domestic housing market more about providing homes for the general population and less of an investment vehicle for the rest of the world’s wealthy individuals. However, I do not feel the new reforms are particularly fair or that they are likely to solve the fundamental issues that are affecting the UK property market as a whole. The one issue that needs addressing above all others in the housing market is that of supply. There is just not enough property being built, so rather than taking the reactive stance of taxing investors wouldn’t it be better to see some proactivity? Would reforming the lengthy and bureaucratic planning laws not be a better solution? Can growth be further encouraged by providing governmentbacked loans for the development of new homes? Ultimately, if we discourage private investors from buying property in the UK, we will reduce the availability of stock for tenants in the private rental sector. This will in turn increase the prices for rental properties, making it even harder for first time buyers to save for the deposit required to gain a foot on the property ladder. I am confident we will be in for another strong year of growth in the London property market and I would like to wish everyone a prosperous 2016.

New Year, New Home
*Figures according to Rightmove
With house prices set to continue climbing over the next year – property prices are predicted to be another £17,000 higher by the end of 2016* – and the impending addition of extra stamp duty on buy-to-let properties, it may be worth starting your research early with these three desirable new developments
No.1 Palace Street Established residential developer Northacre’s latest development in the exclusive SW1 postcode gives residents the rare opportunity of neighbouring royalty. A total of 72 apartments will sit in the 10,000 sqft site in St James’s Park by Buckingham Palace and are set to be complete by early 2018. The buildings, surrounding a landscaped interior courtyard, offer a rich architectural heritage with historic styles – including 1880s Renaissance – meeting contemporary
additions under the guidance of architects Squire & Partners. All of the apartments offer a unique layout and most benefit from extraordinarily grand high ceilings, a dual aspect and original or restored period features. Amenities will include a full concierge service, extensive leisure facilities and underground parking.

Most have large and light-filled open plan living areas and residents benefit from exclusive access to luxury facilities within the complex, including a 20m swimming pool and spa facilities, private gym, cinema room and 24-hour concierge service. Greenwich Millennium Village Situated on the Greenwich Peninsula, close to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of maritime Greenwich, Greenwich Millennium Village is a development by Countryside and Taylor Wimpey in association with the Mayor of London. A range of one, two and three bedroom apartments is available and architects Jestico & Whiles were responsible for the buildings, some of which have statement colourful façades. Outdoor space has been made a priority for residents and is offered via personal terraces, winter gardens and balconies along with landscaped public spaces and a 50 acre ecology garden. Meanwhile, the high specification interiors feature oak flooring, stone worktops and top rated integrated appliances. North Greenwich station and Thames Clippers ferry services are easily accessible while the development’s proximity to London City airport is also notable for frequent flyers.
