It’s a new year, and we’re launching it with a new look. Many of you may be contemplating the same as we move into 2017 and everybody’s least favourite month. Want to shake up your hairstyle? Find inspiration on page 18, where Scarlett Russell speaks to pioneering hairdresser Sam McKnight about working in fashion through the ’90s and partying with Kate Moss. Planning a revamp of your wardrobe and make-up bag? On page 56 we see the new collection for men from COS and on page 38 the latest launch from Karen Millen, while on page 62 I highlight the beauty heroes that you should not be without. Perhaps unsurprisingly, reports say that the most common resolution for 2017 will be to lose weight, but I say let’s invest in our general health and wellbeing instead. Do this with our A-Z on page 72, which gives you the lowdown on everything from acai to zucchini. Matthew Carter falls in love with the McLaren 570GT on page 84 and we invite you to be inspired by far-flung shores on page 89, with a five-page Maldives special. Enjoy.

Curling corporate challenge Take part in Canary Wharf’s corporate challenge on ice: a curling championship, part of Ice Rink Canary Wharf, Luminocity and supported by the English Curling Association. Sixteen teams of four will battle it out for the trophy and a £500 bar tab to be used at the on-site rink bar. Curling is one of the few sports where all ages, genders and abilities can play together and against each other, with two teams sending stones down the ice, attempting to get closer to the centre of the target or ‘house’, than their opponents. A team scores one point for each stone, which is closer to the centre of the house than any of the opposition’s stones. You don’t even need to be able to skate. food & Drink

review A Cut Above When it comes to dining out, my food envy is more corporeal than Shakespeare’s figurative description of jealousy in Othello as a ‘green-eyed monster’ that mocks the ‘meat it feeds on.’ Try as I might, I just can’t help casting covetous glances at my companion’s food. At Gaucho Canary Wharf, however, the green-eyed monster, for once, was held at arm’s length. Perhaps the 450g of meat I was feeding on – prime cuts of Argentinian steak, to be more specific – had something to do with that. Let’s start at the beginning. The ambience in Gaucho was excellent, with a gregarious crowd and chilled music (electro swing, according to my betterinformed friend) contributing to a relaxed atmosphere. The bar is a perfect post-desk pit stop, while the dining area is where you can enjoy a full-blown steak feast – and we were here for the latter.

Lights, camera, eat Don’t skate? Don’t worry. You should still pop down to Ice Rink Canary Wharf this month to check out the LUMINOCITY bar in partnership with 7Up Free. Wine, Champagne and seasonal cocktails await – we love the blueberry and gingerbread Mojito. Meanwhile, London’s finest street foods are dishing up the goods. Start with Pulled’s slow-cooked meats: free-range British beef, pork and chicken, before moving over to Waffle On for dessert. Belgian waffles are served with toppings including chocolate sauce, boozy Morello cherries and – our favourite – toffee banana and ice cream. Don’t mind if we do. Until 25 February, luminocitybar.co.uk

Food envy is all but dispelled as WILLIAM MONROE enjoys the delights of Gaucho Canary Wharf’s finest steak

We were treated to warm bread alongside a meat board showcasing the restaurant’s finest cuts while we perused the menu. White wine selected by our attentive waitress worked well with our starters – I chose chorizo sausage with a delicious blend of chickpeas, red onion, lime and coriander, and my friend ordered the Seafood Sampler consisting of crayfish, tuna ceviche and scallop tiraditos (the insidious monster briefly threatened to rear its ugly head at this point). We both gave our starters top marks. Gaucho is famous for its steaks, and, despite some other tantalising offerings on the menu, we weren’t to be denied. My friend went for the ancho rib-eye, while I opted to tackle the Tasting Plate, formed of three of Gaucho’s most popular cuts – chorizo, vacío and entraña fina. Words can’t really do it justice, so I will simply say this: it was the best steak I’ve ever had. The garlic garnish was

delightful and the main course wine pairing of Malbec from Bodega Colomé, the highest vineyard in the world at more than 3,000 metres above sea level, was eminently drinkable. There was just about room for dessert, and a glass of pudding wine with hints of elderflower combined well with my Banana Mess featuring coconut cream, dulce de leche and honeycomb. The atmosphere was lively, the food and wine were excellent and the service was superb – we left feeling well-fed and warmed on a bitterly cold evening. Gaucho Canary Wharf, Westferry Circus

P

rincess Diana’s slickedback ’90s hairdo, Tilda Swinton channelling David Bowie for Vogue in 2003 and Cate Blanchett’s soft waves when accepting her Oscar in 2014 – all courtesy of one man. Four months before this issue prints, hair stylist to the stars Sam McKnight has a 25-minute window for an interview with me before his diary fills up with Fashion Weeks, editorial shoots and final approval over his upcoming exhibition at Somerset House. And you thought supermodels had a full schedule. “Oh, it’s always busy,” he laughs. “But I’m an opportunist. I’ve grabbed every opportunity that has come my way and ran with it. I think that’s what has shaped my career.” The career in question is one that has spanned 40 years and includes no less than 190 Vogue covers, Madonna’s Bedtime Stories’ album cover and lifelong working relationships-turnedfriendships with Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Karl Lagerfeld and the late Princess of Wales. He first met Princess Diana on a shoot in 1990. “She said, ‘What would you do if I gave you free rein [with my hair]?’” recalls McKnight. “I said, ‘Cut it short.’ She said, ‘Can you do it now?’” From then on, he took charge of Princess Diana’s hair up until her death in 1997. Gone were the perms and in was a stylish crop that cemented her transformation from girly princess to a powerful leader and certified fashion icon.

“I always tried to change things with her – go shorter, wavier or slicker,” he comments. “She had started to modernise her clothes and I thought her hair should reflect that. We had slicked it back a few times in private and the first time she wore it out in public I knew it would cause a stir.” Having grown up on a council estate in Ayrshire, Scotland, McKnight swept hair at a local salon before heading to London and Molton Brown in the 1970s, where starlets including Bianca Jagger would have their hair cut. It led to McKnight styling on shoots and entering the fashion world at a pivotal time. “The industry was bubbling by then,” he says. “The ’60s kicked it all off, of course, but then we came out of the three-day week and London started being cool again. By the ’80s, The Face, i-D and London Fashion Week had started and things had become exciting.” He started shooting regularly for Vogue. During a stint living in New York, along with make-up artists Mary Greenwell and Val Garland, and photographers Steven Klein, Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Meisel and Herb Ritts, McKnight became implicit in the supermodeldefining decade of the ’90s. “Suddenly, Cindy [Crawford], Linda [Evangelista], Claudia [Schiffer] had more power and money than Hollywood actresses. It was crazy. I walked into a shop with Claudia and a girl actually fainted.” McKnight first met Kate Moss when she was 16 and having

test shots taken by Klein. “We all thought, ‘you’ll never make it’, and then Steven took these Polaroids of her and we were like, ‘wow, OK, she really is different.’ I’ve worked with her ever since. Kate takes it further than anyone else; that’s why she’s so brilliant. She wants to make every shoot the best she’s ever done and she keeps us all on our toes. She has incredibly good taste – and the dirtiest sense of humour.” In 1994, Madonna asked McKnight to style her hair for the cover of her next album, Bedtime Stories. “She was lovely,” he says. “Patrick [Demarchelier] and I spent a day with her in a studio in Miami. She invited me to her birthday party that night, but I had a job for Vogue in New York in the morning so I apologised and explained I couldn’t go. Hello! Who turns down a party invite from Madonna?” Having celebrated his 60th birthday last year (a lavish affair at Tramp in Mayfair with 600 guests, including Stella McCartney, Mario Testino and Moss on the DJ decks), McKnight now celebrates his career with a retrospective at Somerset House, Hair, and an accompanying coffee photobook. It’s been in the works for almost three years. “It’s daunting,” he admits. “And quite emotional going through my entire archive. But it’s great. The exhibition is more than just pictures on a wall. We’re having wigs, clothes, books, other people’s voices.

It’s exciting. I couldn’t pick a favourite aspect, but seeing everything together will be very special.” With such a phenomenal career under his belt, is there anything he would have done differently? “Maybe I would have learned to keep my mouth shut a bit more when I was a teenager, kept my opinions to myself sometimes – I could be very outspoken.” A self-professed serial partier, he admits to regretting a “few late nights. But then I guess that’s part and parcel of the job!” And considering he worked through the 1990s – a decadent decade fuelled by supermodels, grunge and Brit Pop – does McKnight feel that the glory days of culture, celebrity and fashion have been deflated by social media? “It was certainly much more elitist and guarded back then,”

he says. “There was a mystery and a glamour to that world. Now, Instagram shows everyone working on the inside and it has become a little fake. We didn’t know what people were having for breakfast, put it that way.” But one thing that won’t change is the cultural impact a hairstyle can have. Whether it be Princess Di’s crop, Victoria Beckham’s bob or Gigi Hadid’s beachy waves, looks from catwalks and covers sweep their way to high street salons and Pinterest boards to become global obsessions. “British people have the most interesting relationship with hair,” says McKnight. “We aren’t afraid to not wash our hair for a week, bleach it blonde or make it pink. People look to Brits to be inspired and I love that.” Hair by Sam McKnight is on at Somerset House until 12 March. The book is published by Rizzoli, £35, rizzoliusa.com

M’ama Mia

Heart’s Desire

Pomellato’s M’ama Non M’ama collection first launched in 2009 with nine rings in nine colours (representing different emotions). Each delicate, round-shaped piece featuring petit cabochon stones was designed to be stacked, assembled and reassembled in whatever arrangement the wearer saw fit. Now, five new gemstones have been added to the line of rings, earrings and pendants, including amethyst, peridot, London blue topaz, moonstone and garnet, with a pavé of white diamonds. For the first time, the collection introduces bangles in five coloured stone variations. From £1,120 for rings, £1,280 for bangles, pomellato.com

Last month, Graff Diamonds unveiled the world’s largest D Flawless heart-shaped diamond. Weighing 118.78 carats, the Graff Venus (so-dubbed by the jeweller) was cut from a 357-carat rough diamond discovered in 2015 at the Letšeng mine in Lesotho. The process took highly skilled, experienced craftsmen 18 months to develop the perfect heart shape. Graff has cut and polished more than half of the world’s top 20 largest diamonds in the last century, making the British jewellery house well-placed to take on the challenge. graffdiamonds.com

True Colours Jewellery designer Ece Sirin explores the science behind colour in her latest collection of talismanic pieces for her brand Bee Goddess. The kaleidoscopic range of drop earrings, necklaces and stacking rings sees striking graphic shapes set with intense pavé-coloured rubies, sapphires, emeralds and diamonds. In ancient cultures, each colour is believed to have a different energy and healing power that affects our bodies, from red – the colour of power, passion and prosperity – to blue, the colour of eternity, truth and spirituality. Soul Colours collection, £375-£6,470, available at Harrods, harrods.com

Below the Surface Gemfields – one of the world’s leading suppliers of gemstones – has sourced rubies from its mine in Mozambique for a new five-piece, contemporary jewellery collection created by Jensen. The minimalist, concave silver designs take inspiration from the jeweller’s iconic Möbius shape, first seen in the 1960s. Twenty per cent of profits will go towards the Niassa Carnivore project1, which works to conserve lions and other large carnivores in the area. From £350, exclusive to amazon.co.uk/georgjensen

Zenith’s reinvents showstopper

watch news words: Richard brown

best of the rest Aquatimer Chronograph Edition ‘Sharks’, £9,650, IWC, David M Robinson, Jubilee Place

Freelancer Chronograph, £2,295, Raymond Weil, raymond-weil.com

UK a beacon of light for ailing Swiss watch industry Last year may have been something of an annus horribilis for the Swiss watch industry at large – exports were down 11 per cent in the first ten months, with some companies down by more than 20 per cent – but 2016 saw Britain’s luxury watch sector soar. The latest available data from retail analysts GfK points towards a strong end of year, with premium watch sales in October up by 53.5 per cent, compared with October 2015. And despite Rolex, LVMH and Richemont Group hiking their prices – a response to the falling pound – sales of watches worth more than £1,000 increased by 25.1 per cent in Datograph Perpetual the 12 months to October 2016. Tourbillon, POA, gfk.com A. Lange & Söhne,

For some, watches simply serve as status signifiers – hence Rolex’s years-long waiting lists. Mostly, though, we purchase watches because of the way they look. We’re primates, after all, and our caveman brains are programmed to feel certain urges towards pretty things – in the case of Zenith’s latest looker, that’s lust. Like so many of last year’s most handsome timepieces – see Girard-Perregaux’s Laureato and Piaget’s Polo S – the Heritage Cronometro TIPO CP-2 is a reinvention of a historic forebear. The original TIPO CP-2 is a design classic from the 1960s. Produced in a 2,500-unit run for the Italian armed forces, the watch was supplied through Rome-based distributor A. Cairelli, whose name appeared on the dial. Today, these ‘A. Cairelli’ timepieces have crossed into iconic status territory and achieve suitably lofty prices at auction. Journalists were given a glimpse of the modern TIPO CP-2 at Baselworld 2016, but it’s only now that the watch is finally available in the UK – though you’d better hope your local dealer got their order in quick, as only 1,000 of these handsome timepieces will be rolling off the production line. The TIPO CP-2 is powered by Zenith’s legendary El Primero movement – famed for being the first chronograph movement capable of measuring time intervals to the nearest tenth of a second. Like its predecessor, the Heritage Cronometro TIPO CP-2 is 43mm in diameter, features two highly legible counters, and comes with a solid, stainless-steel caseback – something that’s sure to please purists, but irk anyone hoping to view the watch’s beating heart inside. £6,200, zenith-watches.com

hen does a watch become an icon? After shifting a particular number of units? Once it has celebrated a certain birthday? Perhaps as it begins to achieve six-figure sums at auction? Whichever way you cut it, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms has acquired legendary status. The watch may not be what the Royal Oak is to Audemars Piguet, or what the Nautilus is to Patek Philippe – indeed, the Fifty Fathoms still gets outsold by dressier sister collection, the Villeret – but the diver’s watch has, almost by proxy, become Blancpain’s most emblematic timepiece. Commissioned by the French Navy in 1953, the Fifty Fathoms beat both the Rolex Submariner and the Omega Seamaster to become the world’s first bona fide, modern-day dive watch. More than six decades later, the timepiece continues to set the tone for almost all underwater tool watches. In 2014, following years of ocean conservation commitments, Blancpain reorganised its underwater initiatives under the Blancpain Ocean Commitment. Since then, the brand has cofinanced ten major scientific expeditions, helping to add three million sq km to the total area of marine habitats protected across the world. In October 2016, at the Royal Institute of Great Britain, Blancpain unveiled the Bathyscaphe Flyback Chronograph Ocean Commitment II. It is the second

Post-press conference, Blancpain vice president, Alain Delamuraz – a man who has served the brand since 2001 – kindly spoke to Canary Wharf. Five or six years ago, during B a s e lw o r l d , t h e C EO o f T i s s o t came to me and said, ‘I’ve just met a guy who you need to m e e t ’ . I said, ‘No I can’t, I’m too busy’. He said, ‘No, trust me, you must meet this guy, the world of diving is the domain of Blancpain.’ The guy’s name was Laurent Ballesta. He showed me two pictures and immediately I knew I was in trouble – they were beyond beautiful. I knew then I had to talk to Mr Marc Hayek [president and CEO of Blancpain, Breguet and Jaquet Droz], it became my moral mission to show him these two images. When I did, he decided to meet Laurent immediately. They spent hours together looking at hundreds of his pictures. He knew straight away that we must work together. Laurent was honoured to become a Friend of the Brand. Marc Hayek is an experienced diver and also very passionate about what he does so this was natural for them. Laurent’s work was published in Edition Fifty Fathoms that year [2012]. We are a real manufacture; we never buy movements from other w at c h c o m pa n i e s . We sell half of our products to other brands when we exchange movements. In our manufacture you have the raw material arriving and we produce the tools that we need to make the pieces. From A-Z, we do everything in-house.

We’re not talking about covering the ceramic with a blue finish; we actually added blue pigment into the ceramic to cause a chemical reaction. The collection is limited to 250 pieces. For each timepiece sold, 1,000 will be donated to scientific expeditions. For the first months of the year, 2015 was quite strong. After that, demand flattened a bit; the second half was not good, as it was affected by the [terrorist] attacks of 13 November. Comparatively, 2016 was the opposite: the beginning of the year was not very strong because of the effect of the attacks. However, the end of the year saw growth. That is compensating for the disappointing start of the year, but not entirely. At the end, 2016 will be below 2015, but still we will be eight times above 2001! Consequently, we can’t complain about the situation. Overall, our growth is strong in C h i n a – by double digits. Hong

Kong is likewise recovering. Thanks to China and Hong Kong, the second half of 2016 will show recovery measured against the first part. B l a n c pa i n e n t e r e d t h e C h i n e s e m a r k e t v e r y e a r ly o n . Too early, as we were among the first to establish ourselves there. I n g a s t r o n o m y, y o u h a v e t h e traditional style of cooking, and then you have the molecular approach, where you destroy a n d r e c o n s t r u c t. Some of the traditional chefs say ‘This is a catastrophe, we must react.’ I say, ‘You should study what the new chefs are doing; don’t do the same, but watch the way they are cooking the egg.’ It’s the same with the connected watch or the Apple Watch. It’s great, it’s new. It means that watches are moving forward. Electronic products live and die. The first TVs, the first quartz watches, you can’t use these anymore. The art of watchmaking will never die. As long as you have a brain and two hands and a heart you will be able to repair and redo a mechanical watch. Our product is a type of art – more expensive [than other watches], less accurate, but it will always remain an art form.

With femininity always at the heart of the brand, tailoring is key – we love the relaxed black pyjama suit. dresses are a staple, whether lace-trimmed, strappy or embroidered: the python print silk dress takes you from work to play in no time. The colour palette is safari – think warm rust and dandelion tones – while the Atelier collection is inspired by British flora, with hand-painted blooms appearing on dresses and jumpsuits. For work wear, the staple white shirt has been reworked and upgraded in cotton and silk. Accessories complete the look. Karen Millen, Jubilee Place

f you’re a fan of embellished sweaters, pattern trousers and slightly unusual accessories (heart-shaped sunglasses, anyone?), chances are you’ve heard of designer Markus Lupfer. Since his final university collection was snapped up by London boutique Koh Samui, he’s gone from strength to strength, with a cult collection of fans including Rihanna, Beyoncé and Cara Delevingne hooked on his sequinned, quirky sweatshirts. “I knew I wanted to work in fashion when I was about 16. My dream was to see my designs realised on the catwalk,” Lupfer says. Today, the aesthetic he creates is edgy, fashion-forward and ironic. Essentially, it’s very east London and it’s no surprise to learn he resides there, “in a beautiful Victorian house”, Lupfer says. “In terms of style, less is more and I like mixing traditional with a few modern pieces, but keeping it quite minimal. The look is cool and contemporary, and a relaxing atmosphere is really important to me.” London is a source of creative stimulation as well as home. “I find a lot of inspiration just walking around the streets of London. From street art to what people are wearing, there is always so much to see here.” Who, where and what else influences his ideas? “Many of the people I surround myself with are very inspiring to me. I also enjoy going to exhibitions and watching offbeat films,” Lupfer says. Another non-suprise: Lupfer is busy. “Work usually begins

around 8.30am, and most days I start with the business side of things,” he explains. “After that I work on developments and designs for the new collection, from choosing colours, developing our fabrics, fittings, and so on. There is never a dull moment in our office as we are all constantly working on creating new and exciting developments and techniques. I usually leave the office around 8pm.” Naturally, then, his top three luxury items are “time, time and time”. But when he’s short on the precious commodity and still needs to switch off, he’s learned how. “My favourite way to relax is going for long walks along the canal in London. I love stopping by for a coffee at Towpath Cafe and relaxing with a good book. I am an avid reader – one of my favourite books is Franz Kafka’s The Trial.” There’s also fitness: “I got into rock climbing recently, which I love. I also swim, go to the gym and cycle to work.” In rare pockets of downtime, Lupfer loves to travel. Fittingly, for a man whose designs are colourful and patterned, he enjoys the brightness and vibrancy of far-flung countries and cultures. “I was in Myanmar over Christmas last year and loved it,” Lupfer says. “The culture, stunning nature, incredible landscape and extremely friendly locals made for the perfect holiday.” Lupfer is refreshingly humble – “I’ve made plenty [of mistakes]” – and surprisingly astute and wise: “from each mistake you

learn and evolve, so in the end they often end up helping you move forward.” One can’t imagine the great Karl Lagerfeld uttering such a sentence. With food and fashion being the perfect marriage, Lupfer is something of an all-rounder: the man knows his way around a kitchen. “I cook for my friends and family. For my last meal I would have everyone over… [for] fresh seafood pasta with loads of white wine.” Not a weight-loss diet, but doesn’t it sound good? And if one’s choice of fantasy dinner party guests is indicative of anything, make of Lupfer’s eclectic assortment what you will: “David Bowie, Ghandi and Albert Einstein.” His design ethos is accessible, a contrast to today’s world of haute couture, which ignores the majority of everyday people. “The pieces are beautifully designed to last. I want the Markus woman to feel confident, individual and stylish. If my clothes can put a smile on someone’s face, it is an added bonus,” Lupfer says. He goes on, “My aim in designing clothes is to make beautiful garments that make the woman wearing them feel good. The A/W16 womenswear collection was designed for the 24-hour woman. She’s quirky, sophisticated and glides through her work day seamlessly into the night.” And he practises what he preaches. “My approach to fashion is very much in this mentality, and I look for clothes that are easy to wear, well-made and I just like wearing every day of my life.” His most beloved item of clothing, he says, is

“a Saint Laurent jacket”. As for what’s coming – Lupfer doesn’t rest on his laurels. I ask what collaboration or partnership he would most like to see. “A sportswear brand would be cool – maybe Adidas for the German connection.” We say – watch this space. Lupfer leaves us with words of wisdom, sharing the best advice he’s ever been given: “Trust yourself and always follow your instincts.” It’s certainly working for him. markuslupfer.com

the mascara For years now I have been on the hunt for a mascara that offers length, volume and – more importantly – staying power. Only too often have I caught myself in the mirror in the mid-afternoon resembling something close to the Joker, with smudgy black debris settling unattractively under my eyes. Recently, I found the answer to my prayers: the Smokey Eye Mascara from Bobbi Brown. The kohlpigmented formula delivers high drama and builds up volume lash by lash, thus avoiding clumping. As the name suggests, it’s also perfect for creating a flawless smokey eye. £23, Bobbi Brown, Cabot Place

the bronzer January is as good a time as any to invest in a new bronzer. My pallid cheeks are screaming out for some colour and it’s MAC to the rescue with its Mineralized Skinfinish. The velvety soft powder not only adds a natural shade of bronze but the pearlised pigments highlight cheek bones and add radiance. This year it’s all about getting the glow. £24, MAC, Jubilee Place

the FOUNDATION For so many of us, finding the right foundation can be like the quest for the Holy Grail. But look no further: the award-winning Original SPF 15 Foundation from Bare Minerals delivers complexion perfection. ritically acclaimed and internationally appreciated Shake Shack has made its way to Canary Wharf just in time for the brand new year. What started in 2004 as a modern day ‘roadside’ burger stand in New York City’s Madison Square Park transformed into a place that is continously raved about and that people travel far to try. The brand has had global success with branches in the likes of Istanbul, Dubai, Tokyo, Moscow and, of course, London. Shack Shake is renowned for its 100 per cent Angus beef burgers and flat-top Vienna beef dogs, spun-fresh frozen

custard and crinkle cut fries. And the Canary Wharf branch, in The Park Pavilion, will have all the favourites for you to experience. The signature ShackBurger®, SmokeShack® and Shack-cago Dog® will feature on the menu, with beef prized for its delicate texture and great taste, as well as the coveted ShackBurger. Randy Garutti, Shake Shack CEO said: “Since we opened our first London Shack in Covent Garden three years ago, we’ve been amazed at the response, and we’re looking forward to bringing Shake Shack closer to more London neighbourhoods with Canary Wharf.”

best seller “Our green juice category has been a big hit, I think people love the idea that they can get a juice which gives them such a big veggie hit quickly. People also respond really well to our functional food that has a tangible benefit.” Shane Kavanagh, CEO, Crussh

what is the core crussh philosiphy ?

what’s new for crussh this january?

The idea of being ‘healthier, tastier, easier’. It is really simple, but it’s also hugely ambitious. I love that we can make a small difference to the health of our customers, and that the food and drinks we sell can improve their lives in some small way.

This month is the biggest launch of new products we have ever had at Crussh. We are launching 35 new products in total, from new cold-pressed juices and Kombucha drinks to organic raw protein shakes and a whole new range of ‘Super Salad Boxes’.

why do you think crussh works so well in canary wharf? Crussh has been a part of Canary Wharf for over 18 years, and we have really grown up here. A lot of the clientele are health conscious, aware of their wellbeing and they are looking for innovation and new products all the time. Crussh has really led the way and continued to change over the time we have been here.

what are the plans for crussh in 2017? What do customers have to look forward to? We have a really big year planned. We have refitted our One Canada Square store. It’s all been redesigned to make life easier for our customers to use and understand and we are really pleased with the results. There is plenty to look forward to.

food to go Crussh launched an online ordering system via its website last September in order to cut down on queuing times. You are able to order your lunch from your desk or home, pop down and pick it up, in either the Jubilee Place or One Canada Square stores, without dealing with the lunchtime rush. Kavanagh said: “The online ordering section has been so good that it prompted us to redevelop and relaunch the whole website. A new app is also coming out early this year to make ordering with us much easier.

drink up

Crussh began life as a juice and smoothie bar, and its commitment to freshly made raw juice underpins everything it does. It also leads the way when it comes to new products like smart coffee and nut milks.

Cart er is hooked

hink McLaren road cars and you probably believe they are absurdly fast, are produced in tiny numbers and have reassuringly robust price tags. And that’s certainly true in the case of the hybrid McLaren P1: the 903hp V8-plus-electric supercar has a basic price of £866,000, though to buy one today will cost much more. All 375 examples have been sold and they now go for closer to £2m on the open market. It’s also true of the threeseater McLaren F1 of the 1990s, reckoned by many experts as the best car ever made. Rowan Atkinson sold his last year for £8m, and that was after it had been comprehensively crashed twice during his tenure. But it’s most definitely not the case when you consider the McLaren 570GT, the latest sports car to be produced by the Wokingbased company. Rest assured,

it is absurdly fast – top speed 204mph – but while it will always be relatively exclusive, McLaren will be making them in thousands rather than hundreds. And alongside the P1, it’s a positive bargain at ‘only’ £154,000. It is also a car that will be showered with praise simply because it is unbelievably good. No, make that bloody brilliant. McLaren reckons it will have built close to 3,000 cars in 2016, the vast majority of which are its entry-level ‘Sports Series’ range, comprising the 540C, 570S and this, the 570GT, the newest addition to the range. All three are powered by a mid-mounted McLaren-designed twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8, developing 570PS – hence the nomenclature (and, yes, the 540 produces 540PS). According to the company, the cars are the most usable and attainable models ever to wear a McLaren badge. The company has even established a PCP

c a m g i b e th CANARY WHARF | 85

scheme, which means you can have a 540C for less than £950 a month once you’ve put down a £35,000 deposit. But that doesn’t mean they’ve been dumbed down: they remain stunning to look at and jawdropping to drive. The 570GT is one of those cars that is so damn quick it forces you to recalibrate your brain every time you floor the throttle. Yet it is so easy to drive, so docile in traffic and so practical, it’s as easy to live with as a Ford Fiesta. Well, almost. Best of all, the Sports Series looks almost identical to the more expensive and more sophisticated 670S from the Super Series and even to the P1 from McLaren’s Ultimate Series, so that your average schoolboy with his nose pressed to the side window will assume that’s what it is. Does wonders for your self-confidence. The 570S and 570GT are broadly similar yet, in many ways, poles apart. They are powered by the same engine, have the same seven-speed automatic gearbox and have the same performance potential. They have the same carbon-fibre chassis – the body is fashioned from aluminium – and the same suspension layout. Crucially, though, the settings are significantly different. The S is a sharper, more focused and slightly more manic drive whereas the GT has softer springs, more forgiving steering and carries extra weight because of its more lavish equipment list. The ride is smoother due to more comfort-focused tyres, the

Pric e: £154,000

cabin quieter thanks to greater sound deadening and the whole ambience more refined, more relaxed. It’s even easier to get into and out of: the McLaren signature dihedral doors open with a more upward arc. As its name suggests, this is a genuine Grand Tourer, a proper old-school GT car. It also has the considerable benefit of a more practical approach. The biggest visual difference between the two can be found at the rear of the car, where the standard panoramic glass roof of the GT blends into a side-opening rear glass hatch, which gives access to a load area behind the two seats. This, McLaren claims, offers 220 litres of space to augment the 150 litres of stowage space up front. Depending on whether the car is left-hand or right-hand drive, the hatch opens on the kerbside. OK, so you’re not going to fit many flat-packed wardrobes in there, but it does give sufficient space for some squashy weekend bags. Thanks to all that glass the cabin is wonderfully airy, while the driving position is damn near perfect (marred only by the awkward seat adjustment controls). The cockpit is also impressive, with intuitive touchscreen displays and logical controls for the ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ settings for engine and chassis. The workmanship in there, a blend of premium leather and high-tech carbon, is exemplary too. But despite all this refinement, there’s no disputing that this McLaren is a seriously fast, fine-

handling sports car. Despite the more comfort-friendly Pirelli tyres, specially created for the car, grip remains remarkably strong. And while the steering ratio has been reduced to make the 570GT slightly less twitchy when tracking along a motorway, for example, it remains beautifully responsive. As for that engine, well, it’s a match for anything the opposition can produce. It revs freely and cleanly, and has a suitably exciting sound track to match the performance. They might be selling this is as a refined GT, but as the figures show it’s a real performance car, too. In the time it takes a reasonably rapid performance saloon to reach 60mph – 6.6 seconds – the McLaren will already have hit the ton. Not only is it quick, the 570GT suffers no turbo lag as the power just builds and builds. At £154,000 the GT is a good £10k more than the 570S but does have a more extensive equipment package with the panoramic roof, an eight-speaker ‘Audio Plus’ sound system and, of course, that rear hatch all as standard. However, that price tag puts it slightly ahead of some pretty impressive opposition, including the Audi R8, Porsche 911 Turbo S and even the Bentley Continental GT. Nor does it have the advantage of fourwheel-drive… but in terms of sheer kerb appeal, the 570GT is in another class altogether. Rarer, more exotic, and as mentioned earlier, absolutely bloody brilliant.

© Baros Maldives Mention the Maldives to most people and it conjures up images of postcard-worthy beaches, turquoise waters and starry-eyed honeymooners. But there is much more to this fascinating country than paradise shores and five-star resorts. Comprising 1,190 coral islands, the Maldives is home to a spectacular array of marine life and boasts one of the world’s highest literacy rates – a staggering 99 per cent. Locals have strong beliefs in supernatural forces and in 2013 a coconut was detained by police after being found ‘acting suspiciously’ during the presidential elections. In spite of this, it is difficult to talk about the Maldives without slipping into a hyperbolic description of its looks; it is a place of such striking natural beauty that it really does take your breath away. There are serious issues at play too, with scientists predicting that the entire country will be under water by the end of the century thanks to rising sea levels. A swathe of new environmentally friendly resorts is at the forefront of trying to prevent this, the ones mentioned over the page included. But what sets these places apart? Read on to find out.

pa r a d i s e r e g a i n e d Our first stop is Baros, which sits just a hop, skip and a jump away from Malé airport. You can trust me when I say that there’s nothing like a 25-minute cruise in a speedboat across crystal-clear azure waters to clear out the cobwebs after a ten-hour flight; island after island of pictureperfect palm tree-lined shores, separated by the most beautiful blue waters you will find anywhere on Earth. Baros is one of the founding fathers of luxury tourism here, being one of the country’s first five-star resorts to open back in 1973, and we quickly learn from conversations with our fellow guests that it has a devoted clientele who return year on year. And once we catch a glimpse of our overwater villa, we can see why: it’s a slice of heaven on stilts. Inside, there is a focus on the use of natural materials that blend with the surrounding environment including natural stones and coconut thatch, meaning that the wonder of the outdoors never seems far away, which is completely spoiling after days of going from bed to Tube to desk with scarce doses of fresh air. Both bath and bed afford views of your decking and the ocean, and the thrill of waking up to that view never gets old. Plus, with

s l u x u ry l o n d o n .c o.u k s

our own private pool and direct access to the sea, the temptation is there to never leave the room. But you must, for treasures await. Mostly in the form of the hotel’s spectacular house reef, which is abundant with marine life including turtles, blacktip reef sharks, vibrant purple and turquoise parrotfish, and mighty titan triggerfish. Make the most of this and book in a snorkelling trip with the resident marine biologist, who knows the reef like the back of her hand and will be able to highlight all the best spots. Perhaps because it is such an old-timer, Baros cultivates a personal, family atmosphere, with staff who will know your name and room number by heart. It isn’t family friendly, however, and won’t accommodate children younger than eight. This means that the adults get all the fun, with an endless stream of ridiculously romantic experiences on offer: one particular highlight was a three-course breakfast on the Piano Deck, perched out in the middle of the Indian Ocean. And for dinner, do not miss The Lighthouse restaurant, which offers fine dining – and the best tuna steak I’ve ever had. Rates start from $675 (approx. £464) per night in a Deluxe Villa on a B&B basis, baros.com

Next up is Milaidhoo – Baros’ flashier, more extravagant sibling. A venture by the same owner, the hotel is being pitched as ‘more luxurious’ than its counterpart; a contrast that is apparent right down to the toiletries on offer in the rooms – Milaidhoo showcases glitzy Italian brand Acqua di Parma, while Baros offers the more rustic L’Occitane. The suites are vast and exquisitely designed. Again the focus is on bringing the outdoors in – the general manager proudly informs us that both the water and beach suites open 180 degrees of the way round – and the contemporary design has been richly inspired by the Sultan, with vibrant shades of turquoise and fuchsia found throughout. The private pool is larger than that found in the water villas at Baros, and finishing design touches are more in evidence, such as the propeller-shaped alarm clock and the swinging seat that prevails over our deck. There are thoughtful additions: a bottle of Champagne greeted us upon arrival and villa hosts are contactable via a mobile phone, meaning you can order lunch from the comfort of your sunbed. The overwater spa, again, is the height of luxury; our

couple’s suite opened up onto decking with a standalone bathtub and unobstructed ocean views, making it the most heavenly place imaginable to relax after a 90-minute spa treatment. When you start to feel restless and hungry for activity, opt for a private yoga lesson in the pavilion, or visit the marine centre for snorkelling or diving. The experience here offers something different, with a chance for guests to plant

their own coral tray using small fragments of coral, so you can play your part in helping to sustain and rebuild the reef. The trays are labelled and guests are given bi-yearly updates on its progress. Dining offerings are unique too; the signature restaurant – due to open this month – is set in a building resembling one of the Sultan’s boats and will be the only restaurant in a five-star hotel dedicated to serving Maldivian cuisine. Exclusive and intimate, the

restaurant will have an open kitchen and just eight tables. And you are not restricted to dining just in the restaurants. We enjoy a memorable evening feasting on a meat and seafood BBQ on the private beach of a villa; a meal that concluded with the best dessert of the trip – a beautifully made screw pine panna cotta. Rates start from $1,625 (approx. £1,308) per night in a Water Pool Villa on a half-board basis, based on two sharing, milaidhoo.com

Last stop: Six Senses Laamu, which promotes a sense of barefoot luxury in its purest form – upon stepping onto the boat we are invited to take off our shoes and confine them to a canvas bag for the duration of our stay. This ethos continues throughout, with a relaxed and informal atmosphere; what we call a ‘luxe backpacker’ vibe. The hotel has the largest overwater complex of anywhere in the Maldives and as such you will find yourself gazing into those azure waters over breakfast, lunch and dinner. The latter can be enjoyed at one of the hotel’s three restaurants – Japanese eatery Zen, Longitude and The Leaf restaurant, which offers a change of scene. Situated in the vegetable garden, the restaurant showcases the finest fresh produce grown on the island plus fish and seafood from the local seas. We were lucky enough to be staying in a beach villa, with our own pool and our own patch of private beach – rooms here pack serious wow factor. The décor evokes a sense of barefoot adventure in the style of Robinson Crusoe – with sinks crafted from leather suitcases and a stunning al fresco bathroom, meaning that you are indoors to sleep and to sleep only. There is much to explore and do at Six Senses Laamu, from the swimming pool and poolside Sip Sip bar – which

has a chilled, Ibiza beach club feel – the wine cellar where you can enjoy wine tastings with cheese and chocolate, and the outdoor cinema, which does screenings every other night, complete with drinks and popcorn. All of this sits alongside the usual snorkelling and diving. Six Senses is family friendly, with a kids’ club and special kids’ movie nights. On top of this, there is an ice cream parlour open daily with more than 40 different types of icecream. Needless to say, this is definitely not just for children. And if your holiday is designed more around purging than gorging, try the wellness screening, where a doctor will measure everything from your metabolic rate to your body’s pH levels, and devise a programme to follow during the course of your stay. There is a real environmental and sustainability focus here, with the notable absence of

plastic in the rooms – all water is in glass bottles – and restricted use of golf buggies. Instead, each guest is given the use of a bicycle during their stay, which has a plaque on it bearing their initials – a really nice personal touch. These sorts of details are where the Six Senses really excels; prior to our arrival we were invited to specify the scent we would like sprayed on our pillows nightly, and our GEM (villa host) was on hand to help with anything from booking spa treatments to waking us up at 3am in order to catch turtles hatching. It’s these once-in-a-lifetime experiences that make the Maldives so special, and with any luck, and a little more awareness, it will still be here for generations to enjoy in decades’ time. American-born artist Liliane Lijn has lived and worked in Britain for most of her career. Working across a range of media – kinetic sculpture, film, performance, collage – she investigates language, mythology, light and matter. The cone or ‘koan’ has been her focus since the 1960s, explored in differing scales and materials. Her work is in collections worldwide and has been shown internationally, with numerous public commissions. In 2005 Lijn was ACE NASA, Leonardo Network artist in residence at the Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California. This exhibition focuses on her sculpture, both static and kinetic, including work using the medium of light, specially chosen to coincide with Winter Lights at Canary Wharf.

The Garden of Floating Words conjures a peaceful note in Jubilee Park, giving the impression that a cluster of glowing neon words are floating in the foliage. and r ew gro ococ k head of s ale s at Kn ight Frank C a nary Wharf, commen ts on t he trends in t he residen tial s ales marke t It is with pleasure that we can turn our backs on what has proven to be an extremely difficult 2016. The sales market has suffered a tumultuous year with the EU referendum, the election of Donald Trump and the ongoing punishing stamp duty measures, which have been levied against buyers. What all of these actions have meant is that the sales market has stuttered throughout 2016, and just when it appeared to look as if we had turned a corner, the next economic or political agenda would come along and interfere. However, as with all volatile markets there have been opportunities. A weaker pound has meant that overseas buyers have returned to the market and are able to absorb the additional stamp duty payments with their currency transfers. With the market rather flatlining for the second half of the year, in conjunction with all-time low interest rates, it has allowed first-time buyers to return to the market and actually take their time when viewing properties rather than feeling rushed into decisions. Agents are once again having to perform an invaluable role rather than simply opening doors. While 2017 will undoubtedly have its hurdles to overcome, it is a time when experience really does matter. Choosing an agent based solely on fee becomes a very dangerous exercise; when trading conditions become tough, experience comes to the fore. Choose an agent who has worked through ups and downs previously, who has the experience to ensure a sale moves quickly from offer acceptance to exchange rather than putting the file in the bottom drawer once a sale has been agreed. Find an agent who can ensure that your property receives maximum exposure locally and internationally, and that you have the very best chance of selling. Most of all, choose an agent who has the perseverance to make sure every property is kept fresh and engaged with, even though selling times are slightly longer. Next year promises to be a good one.

LETTIN GS C hri stophe r Pa x to n h e a d o f l ett i n g s at K ni g h t Fr a n k C an a ry Wh a r f, c o m m e nts o n t h e t r e n d s i n t h e r e s i d e n ti a l l etti n g s m a r k et I must admit, I had never looked forward to having some time off over Christmas more, after dealing with the hardest, but most exciting, markets in my 12-year career. The stuttering of the sales market meant many vendors sat back with the ‘wait and see’ attitude. Also, with the release of four large new-build developments, we have seen stock levels increase dramatically to a level I have never experienced before, pushing us very much into a tenant's market. Rental values have had no choice but to decrease, which in my eyes was bound to happen at some point, as we have experienced fantastic growth over the past few years. Rates had to become more realistic, which I think they now are. I am finding that the owners of the new development properties are being hit the hardest, compared to second generation’s stock, as they experience tough market conditions and a sensitive time of year. My advice to these landlords is that with the competition that’s out there, you need to consider an 18-month plan. Also, don’t overprice your property. Listen to comparable information and present your property to the highest standard. With this, you’ll find a tenant instead of holding out for a potentially unrealistic price, and during the next 18 months, the development will settle and pricing will increase. The main aim is to ensure you have rent being paid and little void period. Not forgetting the tenants, my advice is that you need to look at realistically priced stock with realistic agents. It’s not all doom and gloom out there, deals are being done and in a higher volume than previous years, it’s just that we have to manage expectations and needs. Look to rent your property through an experienced agent with great local experience, as well as an international draw, to ensure you get the very best results.

insider knowledge:

predictions for the year ahead diana alam, head of residential development sales, jll

Vibe, Dalston E8 by Telford Homes

S

ince the decision to leave the EU at the end of June, the Canary Wharf and City sales and lettings markets have demonstrated robust demand and a good supply of properties coming to market, which has ensured continued stability in the face of ongoing political and economic uncertainty, reports JLL. “The perhaps unexpectedly serene post-Brexit result waters led to a steady stream of applicant registrations and agreed sales, which stayed strong even as we approached the end of last year,” says Diana Alam, head of new development sales at JLL. “While property values aren’t increasing significantly at the moment, they are remaining stable, and this combined with the high level of homes on the market really makes the area an attractive proposition both for buyers looking for a wide choice at a fair price, as well as those keen to secure a good long-term investment. “The majority of our local applicants are owner-occupiers who live or work in Canary Wharf and the surrounding areas, with local and overseas investors making up around 20 per cent of our sales agreed over the past three months,” Alam adds. “The final weeks of the year are traditionally quite strong, with prospective buyers and sellers trying to conclude transactions ahead of the festive slowdown. That is the time

130 | CANARY WHARF

of year when agents and solicitors need to work cohesively to ensure that completion dates are met.” “In the rental market, the high levels of activity experienced during the summer continued throughout October and into November, but the flow of applicants has subsided somewhat since the start of November,” comments Neil Short, head of city residential at JLL. “With applicant registrations slowing, we have seen examples of landlords undercutting one another in order to get their properties let quickly. This underlines the importance of landlords being competitive on pricing and presentation of their properties in order to secure new tenants moving in the right side of Christmas and to minimise void periods. “From JLL’s City office, we are currently dealing with completions at Fuse Building and Zest House, Vibe, in Dalston. The development offers tenants an exciting opportunity to rent within the newest development in an area being dubbed the ‘new Shoreditch’. Vibe boasts a number of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, together with a 24-hour concierge service and on-site gym,” Short concludes. 2016 was an unexpected year for the residential market, but as we head into 2017 we expect more opportunities to arise as the market adjusts to the current climate with purchasers and developers alike taking advantage of this.

Decadence Defined

Crafted to showcase complexity and depth, Rare Cask is drawn from the broadest spectrum of casks, 16 different types, ever identified by the Master Whisky Maker. Far less than 1% of those casks maturing at the distillery have been identified as fitting to bestow the Rare Cask name. With rarity at its core, this is a whisky crafted from casks so rare they will never again be used in any Macallan whisky. Combining Spanish and American sherry seasoned oak casks, a high proportion of them first fill, gives rise to an exquisite whisky with a splendidly rich hue, and an unmistakable woody whisky. This is a single malt which captures a true decadence; its creation goes beyond any other Macallan whisky and its rarity is absolute. It is a single malt of such diversity and intricacy it challenges the very conventions of whisky creation.
