For mains, we are led by our waitress who encourages us to opt for three dishes between the two of us. It’s my theory that when trying a new restaurant, choosing a familiar dish is a good indication of quality: it means you can compare and contrast. With that in mind, we pick a crowd-pleaser, the Thai green curry, and fans of the dish will be pleased to know Sri Nam’s was one of the best

Our prawn Pad Thai comes in a vast portion, which we aren’t unhappy about, and our Neau Phad Prig Thai Orn – beef with fresh Thai herbs and peppercorns – is cooked and seasoned perfectly. Nothing washes down Thai food better than cocktails, and we need something sweet to take the edge off all the spice. The Coco Cooler is a refreshing concoction of vodka, Malibu,

If that figure is correct (Tesla has only officially released a 0-60 time of 2.8 seconds), that’s faster than LaFerrari and a Bugatti Chiron. Here in the UK, it’s difficult to really put those numbers to the test. But there’s so much more to a Tesla car than just the impressive 0-60 times. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure an electric car was really going to be for me. A self-confessed petrolhead, I’ve sat at the side of the road in Dubai just listening to the roar of supercars. I’ve deliberately followed an Audi R8 V10 down the motorway for miles just to listen to its engine. I’ve raced a Caterham kit car at circuits around the country and loved every minute of

It’s impossible to go in-depth into the amazing technology that makes the Model S the safest – and smartest – car in its class. But I simply must touch upon the autopilot function. Continually improving and evolving, this system is incredible. Already the car can steer for you on motorways, and maintain speed relative to the car in front. It can even change lanes. I can’t wait to see how this technology will make our roads safer in the future. I discovered very quickly that driving this particular electric car was nothing like I had expected. I urge you, if you get the chance, to take a Tesla for a spin and see for yourself. There’s no way words can really describe the powerful, yet luxuriously comfortable feeling of being behind the wheel. Don’t stay at your desk this lunchtime. The cars I collect have a message of timeless beauty.” While none of the cars featured in this fantasy showroom are mundane, many were indeed massproduced and, as such, owned by the masses. But their prevalence doesn’t take away from their remarkability. The book’s author, the Pulitzer Prize–winning automotive columnist for The Wall Street Journal, Dan Neil, cites the VW Beetle, the Fiat Nuova 500, the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Citroën DS19 as avatars of their time, when you look at their cultural as well as their industrial impact. “They are cars that endow the built world,” he writes. Neil declares the latter the most beautiful car of all time – all 1.5 million of them – and quotes French critic Roland Barthes when he declares such iconic vehicles as the “creation of an era… consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population”. Through the boom periods of the 20th century – the ’20s, the ’50s, and then the ’80s – a new class of superrich called for a new brand of supercar, a change in demand from the likes of Rolls-Royce Phantoms to architecturally masterful Ferraris. The wave of eponymous automobiles that flourished were on the whole created by men (there are very few female car designers, even today) who had the passion and ego to create something better, faster and more beautiful than their predecessors. Miller, Duesenberg, Doble, Horch and Tucker were as representative of their era’s tastes and optimism as the great artists of the day. “I couldn’t find the sports car of my dreams,” remarked Ferdinand Porsche, “so I built it myself”. While it wasn’t the fastest, most beautiful, or critically innovative vehicle of its time, the consensus of its hierarchy is consensual for a deeper reason. “It represents a mordant love,” writes Neil, “a fated nostalgia for a time when cars were purer, more elemental, more creations of master artisans than of bookkeepers.” The Impossible Collection of Cars, £650, by Dan Neil, is available at ASSOULINE Boutiques worldwide and through assouline.com

Flower Power This year, Chanel has followed its first ever in-house movement with a calibre designed specifically for women. We speak to Nicolas Beau, CEO of the house’s watchmaking division, to find out more W O R D S / L a u r a M c Cr e dd i e - D o a k

fashion was for flounce and excess, she flouted

this in favour of masculine lines, minimal decoration and a muted colour palette. Since her passing, her eponymous house has carried on the tradition of going against current trends and expectations. It certainly did that with aplomb when it launched its Monsieur de Chanel timepiece last year. The watch itself, with its jumping hour marker at six and enlarged retrograde minute track, would have been newsworthy enough, but when the press discovered it housed Chanel’s first ever in-house movement, the Calibre 1, everyone was talking about it. At this year’s Baselworld, Chanel unveiled the follow-up. Admittedly, the name, Calibre 2, doesn’t really sound like much to get excited about, but don’t be deceived, for this is another incredible feat of watchmaking – a skeleton movement in the shape of a camellia, one of the house’s most famous symbols. While the name also suggests that Calibre 2 will be very similar to its parent watch, it is significantly different. “We took a completely different approach here,” states Nicolas Beau, CEO of the Chanel watch division. “Calibre 1 was all about style and complexity, while Calibre 2 was much more about beauty and the idea of making a skeleton.” While Calibre 1 was designed to highlight the

components within the timepiece, the intention was completely the opposite the second time round. It was, as Beau states, “all about pure aesthetics”. The intricate, three-level floral pattern of Calibre 2 has been crafted to conceal the watch’s mechanics, with the wheels hidden within bridges that make up the camellia design. Calibre 2 makes its debut in the Première watch – the case shape of which was originally modelled on the Place Vendôme – which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. It is quintessentially Chanel – feminine (the case has been set with diamonds) without being overtly girly, and unlike anything else. This isn’t the first time the camellia has featured in the Première – it was previously used to hide a flying tourbillon, created for the house by renowned watch manufacturer Renaud & Papi. “We wanted to create something mechanical, but with the technical element hidden,” explains Beau. “After a few discussions, Renaud & Papi understood we were not trying to impress with teeth and wheels, but with beauty. Creativity is king here; we do whatever we think is right and the technicians need to adapt.”

It is this need to future-proof Chanel’s watchmaking arm that has led to setting up an in-house department, which is responsible for Calibres 1 and 2 and now in the midst of working on Calibre 3. “If it were 1980, I would probably not have invested in movements and continued to work with experts,” says Beau. “However, in this world where we are surrounded by big groups, you can’t really depend on anyone because they could be bought tomorrow. It has been a massive investment, but if you don’t control your production, you open yourself up to issues in the future.” The man safeguarding Chanel’s future in the watch industry is none other than Romain Gauthier – the legendary watchmaker and protégé of Philippe Dufour – as well as eight other people who work exclusively for the house on movement conception and construction. “When I started, I thought it would be hard to

convince great watchmakers to work at Chanel,” says Beau. “But I found mavericks who wanted to be part of a story, not a big machine.” It was these mavericks who embraced what Beau describes as a “crazy” challenge simply to prove that it could be done. It almost sounds ridiculous when Beau refers to the Calibre 2 as “basic” and a starting point from which Chanel can develop other time-only movements. “We could call it the 2.1 or something,” he says, in what is perhaps a nod to the classic quilted 2.55 handbag. Whatever does come next, whether that be the Calibre 3 or the hinted-at entirely new women’s watch that will apparently be Chanel’s “vision of the next 30 years of feminine watch design”, you can be sure it will be unexpected. As the house’s founder once said: “In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” Chanel’s Première Camélia Skeleton watch, from a selection, chanel.com

director, to thank. A love of fashion runs in her blood: her father worked in textiles and her sister is the founder of fashion brand Sandro, often uttered in the same breath as Maje. “I founded Maje in 1998, at a time when minimalism was trendy. Lots of plain black, navy, grey and white, and clean lines, were almost everywhere. I wanted to be different, to show that you can play with fashion, mix and match different colours, wear prints and still be beautiful and stylish,” Milgrom says. This is key: Maje is classy, but its colour palette isn’t primarily neutral, like, say, COS. “My first collection did not have any black pieces, it was all about colour, pattern, prints: it was very ‘positive’. In the end, I wanted all types of women to be able to find something that made them feel beautiful, feminine and strong while still fashionable, without spending too much,” Milgrom affirms. Maje’s current S/S17 collection includes a denim capsule range, making work and weekend dressing that much easier with functional, stylish separates. Milgrom’s top pick? “The kimono jacket, a perfect transitional piece that you can wear with a warm sweater in the winter or with a tee in the summer.

But maybe what is unique about French fashion is that it makes people all around the world dream about a certain idea of chicness and style,” Milgrom remarks, hitting the nail on the head. Like all fashion brands, Maje is adapting to the digital world. “We’re all questioning the rules that were established a long time ago by the fashion system – look at the See Now/Buy Now phenomenon,” Milgrom says. “Some brands are only available online, with no retail presence

Much as her inspiration comes from all over, her favourite designers are equally varied. “I’m a fan of Azzedine Alaïa; he’s a body sculptor. I like Miuccia Prada’s approach to fashion, and I love vintage Yves Saint Laurent.” As for art, “I like artists such as Franz West, who inspired me very much for the S/S17 collection, in his way of mixing colours. I like the purity of Charlotte Perriand, Antoine Serra and many others.” To wrap up, I ask Milgrom which silhouettes she thinks Maje does best. “I think of our cocktail dresses with an underlined waist,” she responds. It’s good news for my wardrobe, bad news for my bank balance, because I’ve had my eye on exactly that, in a gorgeous blush pink, for six weeks now. And, really, who am I to defy Judith Milgrom? London Grace, an award-winning salon concept that combines a nail bar, independent coffee shop and cocktail bar is coming to Canary Wharf this month and we couldn’t be more excited. “When considering our fourth London Grace location, Canary Wharf was an obvious choice. Our social beauty concept appeals to the time-sensitive shopper, who values much needed ‘me time’ in the midst of their busy lifestyle,” says founder Kirsten Hazell. “London Grace is fast becoming the go-to nail care destination in the city and we believe the discerning Canary Wharf shopper will appreciate our unique offering, whether they’re looking for a pre-work manicure and latte, or bringing a group of friends together for a catch up over nails and cocktails.”

A N E W D I S C O B E AT It might look to have gone soft, but the new Land Rover Discovery is tougher than ever, reckons Matthew Carter

MOTORING

I

am sitting in a new Land Rover Discovery at the Land Rover Experience centre at Eastnor

Castle, not too far from the Welsh border. It’s where Land Rover does a good deal of its off-road testing and where paying punters can come along to see just what a modern Land Rover will do. We are here for the launch of the latest Discovery, the Mk 5. There’ll be a good slug of on-road driving, plus ample opportunity to put the Disco up to its bonnet in muddy water later. But first there’s an identification issue. The car park area is crammed with Land Rovers and Range Rovers of all descriptions, but my colleague and I, with years, nay decades, of experience between us, are confused. “So that’s another new Discovery over there?” “No, that’s a Discovery Sport, er, I think. Or is it an Evoque? Actually, no, I’m sure it’s a Range Rover Sport…” As demand for SUVs has exploded in recent years, so Land Rover has vastly increased its product offering. But the rush of new models has clearly exhausted the design team’s creativity as they are all clones of one another. From the front and in profile, the new Discovery looks identical to the Disco Sport and head on, like any of the three Range Rovers on the market. The only spark of styling individuality comes at the rear. Every generation of Disco has had an offset rear plate, and the new one is no different. In the early days, it was because the spare wheel was hung on

Cruising Like Clooney George Clooney’s annual motorcycle tour may have a Spanish flavour this year. Jeremy Taylor saddles up in Andalusia…

H

ollywood superstar George Clooney is acting royalty. With a string of blockbuster films to his name, fame and

recognition follow the celebrity everywhere – which is why, once a year, he dons a leather jacket to escape the melee on a motorbike. Clooney, 56, still has a wild side, teaming up with close friends for his epic summer adventure on two wheels. Despite marrying barrister Amal Alamuddin in 2014, the screen heartthrob never misses the annual trip. Riding with him is long-time friend, Rande Gerber. The pair run a tequila business called Casamigos and share neighbouring holiday homes in Mexico. In the past they have taken their Harley-Davidsons across America, toured the Dolomites and explored Corsica. Gerber, who is married to former supermodel Cindy Crawford and runs a bar and restaurant empire, explained: “Sometimes we ride for 15 hours a day. We never know where we are going – we just get up and go on the highway. “Our aim is to look for the road less travelled. George is pretty old school, so we just pack a map and don’t switch on the satellite navigation. There’s always somewhere to stay when we get tired.” Clooney and Amal may have given birth to twins last month, but Gerber says that won’t prevent his friend getting on a bike again. “It’s cast in stone. We’ve discussed him being a dad and nothing stops the ride!”

Top of the ‘must-visit’ list this summer is Spain. Gerber and Clooney have been poring over maps and talking to friends about the best routes. “We thought we should check out Andalusia because of the mountain roads and passes. George likes to sit in a bar and ask the locals about the best places to go.” To help the celebrity duo find their way, I’ve packed off to Spain with my friend Ian Smith – happily playing George Clooney to my Rande Gerber. He’s in IT and I’m not a Hollywood A-lister, but we do know how to ride a motorbike. Clooney and his mates have enough money to fly their motorbikes anywhere on the planet – but what

We’re heading for the Andalusian bullfighting capital of Ronda. Sitting above a deep river ravine and surrounded by lush river valleys, it’s one of the most remarkable cities in the whole of Spain. The narrow cobbled streets aren’t well-suited to a heavyweight Harley, however, so we park up just outside of town. Hotel La Fuente is small but tastefully furnished and located on a quiet hillside. A former yacht racer and DJ, he started Beach Boat Rentals after he wrote off a million-dollar yacht – something to do with a hurricane. A good choice for showing me around, then. Squinting into the sun and shouting over blaring ’80s music, Anthony’s passion for these parts is infectious. He points out Star Island, Monument Island and then Fisher Island – home of the most expensive zip code in the USA – and just as I’m whipping my head back around to check out another Italianate mansion owned by a ridiculously rich pop star, downtown Miami’s iconic skyline rises into view and takes my breath away. Once a land of tattoos, backwards caps and skateboards, and a long-time playground for 24-hour party people, Miami is now, thanks to Art Basel, also a meeting place for the art world’s most stylish big spenders. Its sudden glamorous rise has led to new design hotels cropping up faster than you can toast a Pop-Tart. Mid-Beach is the boom-boom area.
