EDITOR’S LETTER

From the

editor

“Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.”

EDITOR’S PICKS

– Wallace Stegner

S

eptember always has a feeling of a new start: the Back to School vibe remains as potent as ever, despite the many years that have passed since those days. Suitcases and holiday things are packed away, cupboards are cleared, their contents sifted into one of two camps – useful or not – while diaries fill up with the plans and obligations that summer tacitly avoids. It’s a feeling compounded by the change in season, the dying days of summer that gently give way to more familiar English weather and the resulting change in wardrobe, as dictated by A/W’s Fashion Weeks some months back. This issue, we have focused on this fresh start – the trends that will see you through the wintery nights to the festive season ahead (page 31), the beauty looks borrowed from the catwalks of Burberry, Gucci and Chanel (page 50) and the jewellery that will either delight you all season or buy you enough brownie points to see you through any trouble you might get yourself into before Christmas (page 55). In the spirit of new beginnings, it is appropriate that this month the Canary Wharf Group has decided to rebrand after more than two decades of empire building, bringing together the many elements of the group into one overarching symbol of luxury – I met the group’s powerhouse chief administrative officer, Camille Waxer, to discuss what the future holds for CWG (page 67). Meanwhile, Aspinal of London has decided to polish up its Cabot Square store, in line with the ever-discerning clientele (page 29) and the capital’s first-ever fully alfresco dining experience launches 100 feet over Wood Wharf this month (page 104). New beginnings all round it seems.

A BRITISH CLASSIC With its unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern design, Crockett & Jones has earned a place in many a modern wardrobe. This month, Canary Wharf’s Cabot Place welcomes the British heritage brand to its sartorial ranks

T

o make a Crockett & Jones shoe is not easy: the brand still employ a slightly refined version of the original technique they used when the company was founded in 1879 in Northampton, England’s most famous shoemaking town. The fifth generation business is family managed and specialises in Goodyear-welted footwear; labour-intensive, this process requires a highly skilled workforce to complete a series of 200 separate operations across an eight-week period just to make each pair. The resulting product is fantastically durable and comfortable shoes available in a number of men’s styles, including loafers, oxfords and boots, and in materials such as suede, velvet and classic leather. Crockett & Jones also make women’s low-heeled shoes and boots. Feminine but formal, little details demand attention, such as the bright blue laces featured on the pair of two-tone brogues or the pretty embroidery sported on the slippers. “We are delighted to announce the opening of our new shop in Cabot Place, Canary Wharf, which will stock the full collection of Crockett & Jones men’s and ladies shoes and accessories,” says Managing director Jonathon Jones. “The retail activity at Canary Wharf will no doubt continue to expand steadily during the next decade, as the number of people working there, and the number of visitors, continues to increase. We think the future prospects are very bright.”

The brooding campaign is shot by none other than the protégé to legendary photographer Mario Testino, Eddie Wrey. It is set in the 15th century Eilean Donan castle in the foothills of the Scottish Highlands and accompanied with a short film featuring the alternative blues music of British band Palace. To mark its 150th birthday, John Lewis is launching its new – very British – menswear line, John Lewis & Co to retail alongside the existing collections. Now, with John Lewis at the helm, you already know you’re getting quality tailoring, but the heritage brand has excelled itself with this latest collection: the detailing (suede trims, cutaway collars and so on) and inspiration (classic and vintage, but with a streamlined, modern fit) tick all the boxes. Fortunately, for you (and her) the British brand is now launching its first menswear collection. It’s high quality and interesting without being fussy. work A polo-neck is a good alternative to a tieless shirt: smart enough for some offices, but comfortable too. Keep it slim-fitting to avoid adding bulk to your jacket and opt for a neutral colour that’s preferably a shade lighter or darker than your suit. When it comes to shoes, trainers and suits are always a point of contention: if you do go for it, keep the trouser legs slim-cut and wear trainers that have never seen the inside of a gym.

off-duty Polo-necks are versatile and can be worn smartly or casually. When off-duty, a comfy, thick-knitted version will suit most coat styles, including heavy shearling, smart pea coats and biker jackets. Just pair with boots and some worn jeans and you’re done.

It takes a certain man to pull off an electric-purple Tom Ford blazer. If that man isn’t you, opt for a stand-out suit in a shade braver than the typical grey and black work jacket. What

women want In the last few years, Michael Kors has gone from WASP must-have to the brand that everyone wants a piece of. So what went right? WORDS: Stephen Doig

FEATURE

I

t comes as no surprise that a man of Michael Kors’ fashion standing would design his mother’s wedding dress. She was in the process of having a dressmaker create one for her upcoming nuptials to her second husband when the fashion force saw the gown and was promptly appalled. He stripped back the design, simplified it, cut the bows off, gave it a more streamlined, clean aesthetic. Mrs Kors walked down the aisle suitably re-imagined in her son’s image. He was five at the time. Precocious? Probably, but it’s an indicator of the level of passion that Kors feels towards making women feel and look the best they possibly can. “I’ve always been very inspired by the women I grew up around,” he says. “From the style of my mother, which was very classic, to my grandmother’s flamboyance, I was fascinated by how they dressed.” Kors grew up around women of a particular style tribe: Long Island residents in the 1960s and 70s; women who adhered to a WASPish mode of attire centred on the very best classic pieces: elegant cashmere, well-tailored trousers and polite pearls. And it’s an aesthetic that Kors has mined time and time again in his career as a fashion designer, bringing the vision of the classic, all-American, sports-centric girl to the masses via his exacting interpretations of her season after season. And at a time in his career when others would rest on their stylish laurels and reap the rewards of their work, his customer base is expanding at a rapid rate, with a line of cult accessories that have introduced him to a whole new audience. At the end of 2013-2014’s financial year in April, the Wall Street Journal published a business report on the rapid expansion of the Kors

label due to the company’s democratic, ultra-covetable accessories: “In a difficult retail environment, Kors’s sales have outpaced competitors by growing more than 20 per cent in each quarter… Michael Kors’s stock has more than quadrupled, and the company’s market value of $16.7 billion is now higher than either Ralph Lauren or Tiffany & Co.” Clearly, the Michael Kors formula is working. It was a style identity inspired by his mother’s sensibility (she had worked as a model) and growing up in the WASP world of 1960s Long Island. He arrived in the fashion world in the early Eighties, just as American sportswear was once again receiving notable attention globally. On starting his career in 1981 at the launch of his label, he changed his name – his original moniker of ‘Karl’ was swaped for Michael because, the designer reasoned, there was only room for one Karl in fashion: Lagerfeld. But what exactly is American sportswear? The concept evolved in the 20th century, during the 1930s onwards, and became a key part of the New York fashion world. Paris and the rest of Europe might have dominated the rest of fashion, but the dynamic American woman needed something more at ease than the restricting corsets and pomp of haute couture. The movement’s ‘founder’ Claire McCardell proposed stylish simplicity for the modern woman; problem solving that could see her from the beach to the bar, in neat, cropped jumpsuits or sleek dresses with pockets – a revolutionary design detail at the time. By the time the 1970s came along, designers such as Geoffrey Beene and Bill Blass were creating luxurious but wearable, impeccably constructed but minimalistic

sportswear pieces for women; multi-functional day dresses that could be tucked, pinned and re-worked to form variants of the same piece (that was Beene) and classic, streamlined, clean, formal, devoid of frou-frou and frills (Blass). These designers formed the template of Kors’ approach to fashion, alongside that of his contemporaries in New York in the 1980s, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, both of whom focused on a sense of easy elegance and function for women. Kors’ signature style was one of classicism and refinement, with a dash of contemporary realism and cool – clean lines, unfettered detailing, elegant cashmere, sharp tailoring and a neutral palette of caramels, monochrome and dove greys. He looked to the WASP era for inspiration, to the fashion prototypes of Jacqueline Kennedy and her sister Lee Radziwill, alongside the modern-day New York social names who followed them, such as Caroline Kennedy and Kors’s 1990s muse Kim Hersov, a fashion editor at American Vogue who combined Californiangirl cool with New York polish. A stint as creative director of revered Paris fashion house Céline, from 1998 to 2003,

further served to bring Kors’ clean, crisp sensibility to a European audience, albeit through the filter of a Paris fashion house. And global fame came later, thanks to his appearance on reality TV show Project Runway. What perhaps marks Kors out amongst the other fashion powerhouses is his boyish enthusiasm for the subject at hand, enhancing and fine-tuning a woman’s natural elegance and power. This is an enthusiasm in evidence at his presentations and trunk shows, where he’ll happily talk through the pieces and engage the fashion editors in dialogue. “There are two kinds of designers; ones who are very happy locked in their office surrounded by their coterie. The last thing they need to

do is go to a trunk show, they’d go running for the hills. I not only enjoy it, I think, ‘how do you do designs that are applicable to real life, unless you live it?’” And that’s perhaps the crux of Kors’ approach – designs that work in real life, whether that’s on Michelle Obama, Emma Stone, Helen Mirren or on someone discovering the joyous pop of colour on a bright, affordable Michael Kors handbag. Bags of style Creative director Mariya Dykalo on Aspinal of London’s new-look store

Words: Elle Blakeman & Melissa Emerson

STYLE HER Into the Woods

Forests and fairy-tales wove their magic in the A/W14 shows, but it was Dolce and Gabbana who led the way, with female knights and Little Red Riding Hoods taking to the catwalk. Claudia Schiffer entered big bad wolf territory, to star in the accompanying woodland themed campaign. Shot by Domenico Dolce himself, the regality has a touch of the medieval, with darker brooding colours providing a backdrop to vivid red and purple. D dolcegabbana.com

 cape town Burberry Prorsum’s equestrianinspired blanket ponchos were one of the most talked about pieces at A/W14. The show saw models sporting personalised house check versions, and the monogramming service is going live from September. Woven in the UK from lambswool and cashmere, the rich autumnal palette of camel, berry and bottle green makes winter seem inviting. D Cashmere poncho, £895, monogram

There was a moment, back in 2007, when Mariya Dykalo, creative director of Aspinal of London, though that she’d made a huge mistake in opening their first stand-alone store in Canary Wharf. “There was a second, because of the economic crash, when we were thinking ‘Oh my God!’. But it was fine, because Aspinal is luxury but not crazily expensive, we actually did really well, and Canary Wharf is still one of our most successful stores.” After seven years at the heart of shopping here, not to mention an astronomical launch in the fashion world as editors and style icons get papped clutching their Marylebone totes and letterbox saddle bags, the brand has decided to refresh their store in Cabot Square, giving more prominence to the now iconic handbags. In terms of the next ‘It’ bag, the Marylebone is still firmly leading the way (any bag that gets snapped on the arms of both Princess Kate and Pippa Middleton is going to take a lot to usurp), however it’s now all about this season’s military green. “You have to get it so right with green,” says Dykalo. “This has a really cool, vintage feel to it, and it’s so easy to wear.” For men, it’s all about the new tech-savvy Mount Street bag – a chic, leather case that cleverly houses a charger pack for iPads and phones. ‘It’s so simple, I don’t know why no one else has done it before.’ The best ideas always are. aquascutum

Crockett & Jones

Few brands can boast creating something that truly changed the face of fashion like Aquascutum, with its invention of the raincoat in 1853. Now, more than 160 years later, it still retails the classic piece, alongside modern men’s and womenswear, and kidswear too.

The latest brand to open up shop in Canary Wharf, Crockett & Jones originates from Northampton. Founded in 1879, this quintessentially British brand specialises in Goodyear-welted footwear. This labour-intensive type of shoe-making requires a highly skilled workforce who carry out more than 200 separate processes over an eight-week period per pair: these shoes will last.

C

alfred dunhill barbour  Over its 120-year heritage, Barbour has come a long way from supplying oilskins to dockers. Now the distinct range of country chic has become an outerwear staple. New lines, including Heritage, Sporting, International and Lifestyle, keep the brand evolving and reinforce a luxe edge to all collections. Though our favourite item will always be the signature quilted jacket: full marks for warmth and style.

erdem A young brand but a powerful one, Erdem has set the fashion sets’ hearts fluttering with its distinct florals that are steeped in modern romance. Established by Erdem Moralioglu in 2005, a student of the prestigious Royal College of Art, his collections can now be bought in more than 170 retailers around the world. Known for his vibrant prints layered with experimental textiles, Erdem is a great mix of elegant style meets bold design.

Holly Fulton

E

Bold graphics, 3D motifs and bright, scene-stealing colours are the backbone of Holly Fulton’s pieces. The London-based, Edinburgh-born designer set up her eponymous fashion label in 2009 and has been delighting fashion critics ever since. Expect to see her at this month’s London Fashion Week, with her clothes being modelled by none other than number one fan, Samantha Cameron.

F

The Dunhill brand is steeped in colour and history. Founded in 1983 by a tobacconist and inventor who was more interested in fast cars than peddling suits, it has evolved into a leading figure in luxury menswear. Nowadays, it retails a mix of elegant tailoring, wardrobe-anchoring basics and accessories (including great man bags that we can all get on board with).

D

G lulu guinness  The queen of quirk whose lips got everyone talking. Having sparked the idea of abstract, unusual bags as accessories – a trend that is huge this season – Guinness injects individuality and playfulness into all her work. A British design institution, she was awarded an OBE by the Queen in 2006 and the ICONOCLAST Award for Lifetime Achievement in The Independent Handbag Designer Awards in 2009.

FEATURE

hackett Hackett was born when Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings started selling second-hand, traditional British men’s clothing in Portobello Market in 1979. Fast forward 30 odd years, and its suits can be spotted hanging in the wardrobes of every dapper gent in London and beyond. With a bowler hat and crossed umbrellas on its crest, it doesn’t get much more British than this.

H

I J issa

Issa is all about the silhouette. Think dramatic draping, feminine twists and bold prints. The brand was propelled into global recognition when the Duchess of Cambridge chose an Issa dress to wear for her engagement announcement, in a shade that perfectly matched her ring. When photos of her were beamed around the world, the dress sold out in less than 24 hours and sparked a trend for ‘the little blue dress’.

 jaeger

Having converted a famous fan base as diverse as Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant and Dame Judi Dench, Jaeger’s appeal is world-class. Established in 1884, the brand is known for its use of natural fibres and was the first to introduce camel hair on the high street. Jaeger’s simple, sophisticated style is anchored by three signature colours – black, ivory and navy.

loake

christopher kane

Not afraid to make a statement, Kane’s designs add a splash of colour that we all need – digital prints and embellishments are favourites and his collections are always full of one-of-a-kind patterns. Kane has collaborated with everyone, from Versace and Manolo Blahnik to Topshop, a testament to the wide appeal of his bold designs.

L

Loake played an invaluable role in last century’s two World Wars by making boots for British soldiers. At its peak during WWII, it produced 2,500 pairs per week. Built on a history dating back to 1880, the brand’s fine gentlemen’s shoes are now more likely to be seen in the boardroom than the trenches, yet it continues to stay true to its heritage.

K

stella mccartney A Central Saint Martins graduate, McCartney has made a name for herself across the globe with her eco-friendly luxury fashion. Women love her flattering designs, which often use optical illusions and black panels to create slimming silhouettes. In fact, her cut-out ‘Saskia’ dress was the most popular choice on the red carpet in of 2012.

o q p net-a-porter

n

Natalie Massenet revolutionised online shopping in 2000, when she brought our favourite brands to our fingertips with Net-A-Porter. A dangerously convenient one-stop-shop for the best designs around, it’s all too easy to add just one more thing to the basket. And, of course you’ll need the matching shoes…

mary quant 

Mary Quant helped define the look of the 1960s in London by being instrumental in the Mod movement, which helped bring out the playful rebel in a generation. The inventor of the miniskirt and promoter of skimpy hotpants, she may not have used a lot of fabric, but she did create an extensive legacy which has had a lasting impact on British culture.

orlebar brown

Although it was back in 2006, we are still trying to compose ourselves after the sight of Daniel Craig emerging from the sea in Casino Royale wearing those skin-tight, blue swim shorts. The quest for pool-side style has never been so prevalent, and Orlebar Brown is the champion of luxe swim shorts. Its variety of styles and lengths go as short and tight as you dare.

thomas pink 

dom reilly 

r

A 15-year career on the road working for Formula 1 allowed Dom Reilly to appreciate the importance of quality travel accessories. His leather cases, bags and wallets are lightweight, masculine and strikingly simple – the type of luggage that demands an upgrade. Staying true to his racing roots, Dom Reilley is also the official supplier of the Williams F1 Team.

Mr Pink was an 18th-century tailor in London who designed the iconic hunting coat. Although the coat was scarlet, it was always referred to as pink in his honour. Nowadays, the brand is also known for its two-fold, comfortable cotton shirts, which come in an array of colours to break up the office monotony of stiff white collars and limp ties.

S

paul smith

In business for more than 40 years, Paul Smith’s clothes are weaved into popular culture. He took suits and tailoring from the businessman and made them part of the fabric of rock bands and game-changers. Paul Smith continues to be the designer and chairman of his growing fashion empire, which spans 14 collections including a womenswear division.

A lover of glamour for all occasions, Monica Vinader’s must-have pieces are so covetable they are now the best-selling jewellery at Harrods. With its gold-plated friendship bracelets, sparkling drop earrings and gemstone rings, the jewellery delights during the day and carries through into night.

Yunus and Eliza

Sculptors Yunus Ascott and Eliza Higginbottom describe their own brand of dramatic jewellery as ‘sculpture to be worn’. Their eccentric pieces and bespoke requests mean you’re more likely to see their creations on the cover of magazines than on the street.

The X Factor

The late, great Alexander McQueen once said: “British fashion is self-confident and fearless. It refuses to bow to commerce, thus generating a constant flow of new ideas whilst drawing on British heritage.” The country’s fashion may not bow to commerce, but it does create it. According to statistics published by the British Fashion Council, the British fashion industry is now worth £26 billion.

vivienne westwood

The grand dame of punk rock, Vivienne Westwood is a fashion institution. Breaking down the walls of conservatism, she brought colourful chaos, rebellion and wild style to the forefront of the 1970s. Still causing waves in fashion, she also donates her time to political causes such as civil rights and nuclear disarmament.

ZOË JORDAN

In 2012, Zoë Jordan was shortlisted for the British Fashion Council Vogue Designer Fashion Fund award. Although the accolade went to Jonathan Saunders, she nonetheless has gone from strength to strength with her desirable collections which jump in aesthetic between superfeminine and urban tomboy. A favourite of London It girls Sienna Miller and sisters Poppy and Cara Delevingne.

Burberry Prorsum

SHEARLING Coats are always the biggest draw of the A/W14 shows, and this season didn’t disappoint. Shearling couldn’t resist making a comeback and showed its versatility in a mix of classic and more creative styles. Burberry, of course, led the way with heritage pieces in rich tans and beiges, while a cape casually slung over one shoulder was the ultimate in laid-back luxe. Moving away from the traditional was 3.1 Phillip Lim, who combined rich block colours, from cerise to chocolate brown, to form plush patchwork pieces, while stand-out stand-alones included a lilac wash jacket. At Altuzarra things stayed neutral, and its off-white, oversized jackets with leather detail were a less warm and fuzzy side of the trend.

NORMCORE It’s no longer enough to stand out in the crowd; you have to do it while simultaneously blending in. Contradictory? Confusing? Welcome to the world of fashion. This the logic of the Normcore trend, which is rapidly moving beyond buzzword status; the A/W14 shows were big on this paredback approach, which advocates a neutral palette, often head-to-toe in one colour and minimal fuss, allowing the shapes and cut of the clothing to take centre stage – think androgynous suiting, polo-necks and a wilful lack of embellishment. Simple, chic polo-necks featured at Guy Laroche and in the relaxed dresses at No.21, while Jil Sander, always one for masterful minimalism, was in fashion heaven with simple two-piece suits.

SIXTIES If there was ever an era that fashion couldn’t resist revisiting, it’s the Swinging Sixties. The decade gave us some of our greatest icons, from Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, to Jane Birkin, whose namesake Hermès’ Birkin bag remains fashion legend. Unsurprisingly, all with their penchant for dramatic luxury, it was Valentino, Louis Vuitton and Gucci who drew on this theme the most. Gucci’s knee-high boots in python and black patent toughened up soft ice-cream shades, while supremely soft leather and embellishment added a touch of 21st-century glamour. A-line mini dresses featured heavily across the shows; Dsquared² championed the silhouette, but it was Valentino who reigned supreme with the addition of geometric prints and polka dots.

BRIGHTS Is it just us or does Spring/Summer seem to have come a little early this year? Refusing to stick to winter’s usual dark colour palette, this season, designers left a dazzling trail of colour all the way from New York to Paris. Chanel’s supermarket shoppers took to the aisles in brightly coloured coats of yellow, green and orange, all sporting a visible lining of geometric shapes, while Roksanda Ilincic and Peter Pilotto followed suit with bold technicolour shapes, mother-of-pearl embellishment and heavy, ribbed knits – be warned, this trend is not for the faint of heart.

skin Summer’s dewy, bronzed skin has been usurped by mannequin-like matte faces. Although slightly intimidating at first, this airbrushed, shine-free look is actually quite easy to pull off with the correct products. Steer clear of anything labeled ‘glowing’, ‘silky’ or ‘luminous’ and opt for something matte. We love Dolce & Gabbana’s version; use after a primer (This Works’ In Transit Camera Close-up – is a favourite) and apply with a brush for a picture perfect look.

Nails are often one of the easiest ways to replicate a catwalk beauty trend, and this hot orange shade was a key one this season. JEWELLERY

Jewels, gems, pearls and diamonds; essential components of any jewellery collection WORDS: OLIVIA SHARPE

LEADING LADIES For her A/W14 accessories collection, British fashion designer Jenny Packham was influenced by 1970s socialite Bianca Jagger who was known in her day for being an avid follower of the New York party scene. The designer commented that she admires “women who style themselves with integrity and wit – Bianca was the queen of mindful dressing…” Oversized cuffs, headturning necklaces and dramatic rings in rich tones of cyan and royal blue, contrasted with lighter shades of topaz and aquamarine, make up the Bianca collection, while statement necklaces featuring jewelled tones, multicoloured headbands and silk champagne organza belts complete the accompanying Solaris collection. Café Society At Paris Couture Week, Chanel unveiled its latest haute joaillerie collection, Café Society. A departure from previous collections based around signature house symbols such as the lion, the camellia and the star, the new 81-piece line instead embraces the avant garde and creative world of Paris’ ‘Café Society’ during the 20th century and combines cutting-edge, geometric shapes, diverse colours using an array of precious gemstones and contrasting materials including white gold, rock crystal, onyx and black spinel. Sadly, you will have to wait a little longer to get your hands on the new collection as it doesn’t become available in UK stores until next May. D chanel.com

Great Mysteries Cutting Edge  Each piece from the Archi Dior collection, shown at this year’s Paris Couture Week, has been attributed to an iconic line or haute couture gown. Designer Victoire de Castellane has used the concept of architectural design to transform fabric into precious stones and high fashion into high jewellery:

‘I wanted to create each piece just like the dresses Christian Dior designed with an architect’s eye, as if the jewels were sculpted, flounced, pleated, belted or draped fabrics… These are pieces of jewellery which take to the catwalk as if they were ballgowns’ – Victoire de Castellane

Jacques Arpels, founder of historic French jewellery maison Van Cleef & Arpels, was once quoted as saying: “Our aim is to offer excellence in all that we do”. And for more than a century, this is exactly what it has done. One of the most recognised names in haute joaillerie, Van Cleef & Arpels has continuously succeeded in effortlessly fusing elegance, sophistication and beauty since it was first established in 1906. Now art historian and journalist Bérénice Geoffroy-Schneiter has charted the history of the jeweller and its most famous pieces, revealing the mystery behind its patented gem-setting technique, Serti Mystérieux (mystery setting) in her new book, available from September. I Olivia Sharpe meets Jade Jagger in her new London showroom for a sneak preview of her latest jewellery collection, Neverending, launching in September

n the weeks leading up to the opening of her New Bond Street store, I meet Jade Jagger to preview her new limited edition jewellery collection, Neverending, in collaboration with online luxury marketplace 1stdibs. Unsurprisingly, there have been numerous articles written about the daughter of Rolling Stones’ frontman Mick Jagger and his first wife Bianca, some of which have been less than flattering, portraying her as a bit of a diva (to put it mildly). Entering the showroom, I immediately spot Jade; her striking features inherited from both parents are hard to miss. Heavily pregnant (she gave birth to a baby boy just a month after our interview) and being a warm day in May, most women in Jade’s shoes would not have welcomed a day being grilled by press but this doesn’t seem to faze her. Appearing effortlessly stylish in a loosefitting top covering her baby bump, jeans and ballet pumps, she briefly shakes my hand before going back to setting up her jewellery stand. When we eventually sit down to chat, Jade jokes how she is taking a seat on her throne and the air is instantly lightened. The jewellery designer’s latest collection is one of several but signals her first partnership with 1stdibs. com. Despite being founded in Paris, the online retailer has always considered New York home, having relocated there two years after it was established. It was the perfect fit for Jade who is not shy in telling me that she finds it impossible to move away from her childhood “halcyon days” in 1970s New York, when she would hang out in The Factory with her mother’s close friend Andy Warhol. “I can’t get away from my heritage. My work always seems to end up being a throwback to the 70s and this has very much become part of my intrinsic style.” Studying the 30-piece collection of statement ruby, sapphire and chrysophrase rings, earrings, pendants and

a kind of magical quality. My ideas don’t necessarily come from a research perspective. They evolve.” Having worked in jewellery for 20 years, Jade considers herself a jewellery designer first and foremost but acknowledges that her design background plays a significant part: “All the things I do share a lot of qualities: the use of colour, graphics and a sense of modernity throughout. It applies across the board.” While the collection is edgy and contemporary in many ways, it also possesses a sense of timelessness. After setting up Jade Inc., in 2000 the designer was snapped up by Asprey & Garrard where she worked as creative director for seven years. She is credited with creating some of the house’s most iconic collections, including Wings which remains a bestseller. Jade has been noted for her slightly rock ’n’ roll style, incorporating motifs such as disco balls, skulls and arrows. However, over the years, this has evolved and the latest collection is a reflection of her maturity as a fine jewellery designer. The whole process of designing Neverending has taken years and Jade is still adding new pieces, hence the name. Fortunately, being a mother of three has meant she has mastered the art of patience. “Having children and working in business makes you understand how

bracelets, it’s easy to trace this influence. Jade’s craftsmen are based in Jaipur and the pieces possess a bohemian feel (characteristic of 70s jewellery); the majority of the stones, locally and ethically sourced, are set in 18-karat yellow gold and embellished with traditional Indian enamel work and diamonds, mirroring the artistry of the maharajas. Jade is also inspired by art and architecture. She developed a love of drawing when her father was gifted one of the first Macintosh computers by Steve Jobs and this love was then nurtured by Warhol. In the late 1980s, after studying painting in Florence, she worked as an artist and held several successful exhibitions before setting up her own jewellery line, Jade Inc. She comments: “I’m probably more art-based from my design and artistic backgrounds. I started out making my own paint from pigments such as lapis lazuli and these techniques slowly developed into my jewellery.” She is also the founder of interior design company, Jade Jagger for yoo, and this again makes her an ideal collaborator with 1stdibs, a brand which specialises in antique furniture and fine art, among other things. Each piece within the Neverending collection features strong, graphic lines and geometric design elements. Saying that, Jade deems it impossible to define exactly where her inspiration comes from: “I do believe it has

“The whole process of designing the Neverending collection has taken years and Jade is still adding new pieces” good things come to those who wait,” she says, smiling. While Neverending highlights Jade’s own evolution as a designer, it is still very much in keeping with her signature style. Each piece has a natural confidence and charisma, qualities which I believe to be indicative of the designer herself. Jade has always loved working with semi-precious stones and the first piece she created for Neverending was the emerald ring. “I often start with rings because I can’t help myself,” she remarks, excitedly. Later this year, Jade plans to release a Flower collection, as well as continuing to work on her newlylaunched Ibiza range. The gold-plated line of jewellery is part of the designer’s more affordable range and demonstrates her love of the Mediterranean island where she has spent many happy years and currently has a home. Leaving the interview, I can’t help but think it must never be a dull moment when you’re in the presence of Jade Jagger. Hart

of the matter

With 40 stores stretching the length of the country, Fraser Hart has been busy carving out a niche in the luxury watch and jewellery sector. Roger Baker talks brands, business and burgeoning times with company CEO Noel Coyle

I

t’s fair to say that Noel Coyle has had a varied career. The man who now sits at the helm of Fraser Hart (and the Anthony Nicholas Group which owns it) has at various points worked in oil exploration, television and video production and FMCGs, before arriving in the watch and jewellery industry more than 20 years ago. CEO of Fraser Hart for the last seven years, Coyle has overseen a dramatic expansion, opening 10 stores across the country during a time when the economy was struggling with recession. Coyle splits his time between London and his home town of Dublin.

You acquired Fraser Hart in 2007. What made it such an attractive acquisition? It gave us an entry into the UK market and into a different level of business, the higher-end watch and jewellery sector. We saw a gap in the market, an opportunity to build on the strong base that Fraser Hart already had to create a unique retail environment with the best brands and the highest customer service standards, a level the larger multiple retailers could not reach. What distinguishes Fraser Hart from other watch and jewellery retailers? Essentially it’s about the service. We aim to be at the heart of every celebration. People in our industry

are generally buying presents for life milestones or celebrations – significant events in people’s lives. Everything we do comes back to this. We make sure we have the best product selection and provide store environments and a level of service that really comes through to our customers. You managed to expand during a recession. How? We were able to trade reasonably well through the recession. The high-end watch sector stayed particularly resilient. I think it’s facing more challenges now, in the last six months, which is kind of contrary to what you would possibly think. We continued to open stores and stick to our model because the opportunity was there. We didn’t open as many stores as we would have foreseen back in 2007 but everything else fitted in in the way we expected it to. We still opened 10 stores during that period, which is very reasonable for a business of our size. What accounts for the dip the industry has witnessed over the last six months? Central London seems to have been affected by a reduction in Chinese spending. I think the consistency in higher-end watch brand purchases has not been as strong in the last six months. The economy is on the up and sometimes that results in people looking over

collection

what they’re spending on, particularly when it comes to luxury spends. People start considering other areas of high spend that they have deferred for many years. This may cause a temporary blip in spending patterns but overall the luxury watch sector continues to be strong. What will be the next biggest changes to the industry? The strongest five or six brands will continue getting stronger. There will be more consolidation. Some brands are moving towards mono-brand stores which, as a multi-brand retailer, causes us challenges. We also need to prepare and adapt for continued changes in multichannel retailing. What percentage of your business is watch related? About 40 per cent of our business now is watches. We have a very strong diamond and bridal offer in addition to jewellery from leading international brands and our own exclusive lines. Which watch brand do you sell most of? Quantity-wise, Michael Kors. It’s been a phenomenon. In terms of luxury watches our biggest selling brand is Rolex. How do luxury brands successfully engage with social media? Brands need to learn not to be afraid of it, and not look at it as some kind of downmarket or volume market trend. We use social media to engage with our customers, to listen to their feedback and communicate product launches, events and developments. Our presence on social media sites is an integral part of our multi-channel business. What percentage of your watches do you sell online? It’s less than ten per cent; but that’s the same case for everybody. The online average for the watch and jewellery industry is around seven or eight per cent. Fashion sells a lot more online but that’s understandable because it’s a different product.

than our existing operation. It was a new market that we didn’t operate in, with a new set of product challenges. It was a risk but there have been huge rewards. What’s the biggest mistake you’ve ever made? I’ve made plenty. The thing is to identify [mistakes] and correct them; find new opportunities. Business moves so fast, meaning that you have to make decisions quickly. If you don’t, you get left behind. Which watch brand would you never stock? We have to look at what our product offering is and what fits into our portfolio. We can’t stock every brand. It’s about concentrating on the ones with the best representation in each particular segment. The thing you are most scared of is… Our biggest challenge is to maintain our niche and our relevance in the retail market in the face of continued consolidation and multi -channel developments. It’s also our biggest opportunity as we have, and will continue to develop, a fantastic team of people throughout every area of the business, driving Fraser Hart to ever higher standards. Which watch do you wear? At the moment a Rolex Daytona, but whatever collection I look at, I find a watch I want to wear. Where will Fraser Hart be in five years’ time? We will have grown by hopefully another 15 stores. We should be operating within the top 75 to 100 locations in the UK. We will be truly multi-channel, still providing outstanding service to our customers in every area. D Fraser Hart, New Change Passage, One New Change, 020 7236 4560 fraserhart.co.uk

What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken in business? Acquiring Fraser Hart, but it was also the highlight of my career. When we acquired the business it was bigger

BUSINESS Overwhelming Evidence The Deloitte 2014 Global Human Capital Trends Study has shone a concerning spotlight on a business trend nicknamed the ‘overwhelmed employee’. Employees who fall under this damp umbrella feel both overworked and endlessly distracted, with research revealing that people check their mobiles up to 150 times a day. They also believe the majority of companies don’t help them manage information flow, yet they simultaneously independently waste as much as 41 per cent of their time on things that provide little personal satisfaction and consequently don’t get work done. It may be time for less talk, more action. Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, is already leading the efficiency train with his ‘two pizza’ rule: to keep company meetings quick and concise, they need to be small enough so that you could feed all in attendance with just two pizzas. hen Camille Waxer first stepped foot in Canary Wharf some 24 years ago, it was little more than a building site. One of the first people to see anyone in a suit here, she was assured that this building site would one day be the epicentre of London’s financial market. “When I started, it was a construction site, but I was told that one day there would be more than 100,000 people working here. Now, to actually still be here and have over 100,000 people working here, plus 100,000 visitors at

backdrop of the real thing outside. At the core of this is the Canary Wharf Group, led by the charismatic Sir George Iacobescu, who has strategically been building five separate brands – Contractors, Management, Shopping, Arts + Events, Canary Wharf Ltd – to create and run the empire that is E14. This month, as all of the long-thought out plans begin to click into place, the group has launched a rebrand, bringing together these five strands into one umbrella brand – with a logo incorporating the area’s star attraction, One Canada Square

the weekend, it’s quite a thrill,” says Waxer, whose targeted strategies played a title role in this transformation. Waxer knew that to elevate Canary Wharf as a destination over other financial districts, it needed to offer something more. Her solution was to add a lifestyle element, with a strong retail presence and crowd-drawing public arts and events that celebrate a work/life balance. There’s a real buzz about Canary Wharf at the moment – the first retail phase of the Crossrail roof is just months away (with the station promising to link us to the City in just seven minutes and Heathrow in 39 when it launches in 2018), there are a host of new stores about to open, and new residential offerings with a level of luxury to put an Hermès Birkin to shame are about to go on the market – and nowhere is this more clear than on Floor 30 of One Canada Square, where a huge scale model of the estate dominates the boardroom, against a

and it’s two neighbouring towers. “It always came back to the tower and the two tall buildings that flank it. Every single design that we saw all had the towers in one of their designs, without us even asking for it,” says Waxer. “Whenever you talk to people about Canary Wharf, they always talk about the tower; even though there’s been others, they still think of Canary Wharf as this tower.” So how do you set about finding a logo that covers everything from luxury shopping and art to construction? ‘We wanted it to just be about the company – the luxury and the integrity of the Canary Wharf Group; we needed something that would really represent quality, which was probably the hardest part, because often branding companies will present a number of ideas that are very on trend and that wasn’t what we wanted. We’ve been here for 25 years and we’re going to be here at least… well we don’t have an end date in mind!’

How to Lose A Job in Ten Words A recent survey of hiring managers conducted by CareerBuilder has found the best and worst terms to put on your CV. Results-driven language topped the best poll, with ‘achieved’ coming in first as what 52 per cent of employers wanted to see, followed by ‘improved’ at 48 per cent. The best list also included monetary terms such as ‘revenue’ (23 per cent) and ‘under budget’ (16 per cent). Topping the worst was boastful yet vague terms with ‘best of breed’ (38 per cent) followed by ‘go-getter’ (27 per cent) annoying people the most. Claiming statistical proof that their theories have boosted revenues in a number of companies, The Innovator’s Method argues that management principles have to evolve with the changing world, while promoting experimentation over hardline decisions. Rich Kids Of Instagram

FEATURE

“T

o my son, I leave the pleasure of earning a living, which he had not done in 35 years.” An unnamed Londoner wrote this in his will, as recorded in The Book of Lists. You can only imagine the tense looks passed around the table when that was read out at that particular will reading. Today, the act of leaving your children money, or rather not doing so, has never been so topical. Gone are the days when the question of grand inheritance was an issue only for aristocrats and old dynasties who passed their wealth down from eldest to eldest, protecting the standing of the family. Now, people from even the poorest backgrounds can build businesses or become famous, compiling fortunes beyond their wildest imagination in years rather than generations. All without being born into wealth, and not being sure if their children should be either. Meanwhile, children of the celebrity-wealth camp have the modern dilemma of being caught by the paparazzi when burning their way through their parents’ money. Or they’re happy to do it themselves: just visit Rich Kids of Instagram to see how much. The blog is where self-titled ‘rich kids’ can upload photos of themselves, ranging from the merely boastful (a few bags of Chanel hanging from a manicured finger) to the downright vulgar ($132,000 bar bill anyone?). While a guilty pleasure for some, it can serve as an active warning sign for others – after all, who wants to be the parent of the kid with a diamond dollar-sign tongue piercing? While not necessarily representative of all wealthy offspring, these teens are happily reinforcing the stereotype of the yacht-commandeering, shopping-bagtoting roster of rich kids who spend lots and earn little. So is it any wonder that parents who, having grown their assets through hard graft and toil (and can still remember the horrors of public transport and non-filtered water) are worried about the effect of not needing to work? And is it ever OK, or even necessary, to cut off the kids?

Firstly, it’s worth remembering – particularly if you’re reading this pressed against a stranger on the Tube while heading to a cramped flat on the wrong side of Zone 2 – that being born into money isn’t always easy. A study by Arizona State University found that the children of the wealthy have increased incidences of drug abuse, criminal behaviour and eating disorders. The majority of which is underpinned by anxiety and depression: two factors that are twice as common in the children of parents who earn more than £100,000 a year. Suniya Luthar, a psychologist at Arizona State University, said speaking to the Daily Mail UK: “The children of affluent parents expect to excel at school and in extracurricular activities, and also in their social lives. They feel a relentless sense of pressure.” Also, just because there’s money in the family it doesn’t ensure that the children can bank on getting a slice of the inheritance – meaning they certainly can’t forget to leave anyone off the Christmas card list. When Leona Helmsley, a real estate developer and hotel magnate nicknamed ‘The Queen of Mean’ for her shrewish disposition and fits of rage at employees, died in 2007, her will sent her family and the media into chaos. With a fortune estimated between $5 billion and $8 billion, Helmsley left the bulk of her fortune to animal charities. $12 million went to her dog while two of her grandchildren got precisely nothing (the other two got a minor – well, compared to the dog – $5 million each). She explained it was for: “reasons which are known to them”. Ouch. However, such bitterness is rarely the reason for cutting off children. More than ever, parents are saying that they intend to do so to prevent their children growing up spoilt, work-shy and dependent on the bank of mum and dad. Sting raised a few eyebrows when he revealed he wouldn’t be leaving his six children his £180 million fortune because a trust fund would be an “albatross round their necks”. And besides: “I told them there won’t be much money left because we are spending it!” Each to their own, Tantric lessons don’t come cheap; however, it does seem somewhat of a paradox to raise your

children one way – first-class travel, private school, staff – only to tear it from them overnight. This suggests it could be the parent who is uncomfortable with the grandeur of their lifestyle. If the best part of being wealthy is the security, then are you really protecting them by removing the life they know? Zoe Sive, a partner working in law firm Kingsley Napley, is experienced in managing the difficult process of inheritance: “Many social scientists claim that family wealth dissipates in, on average, three generations. This is because while money is passed down, the wherewithal to create and to keep wealth is not. The children do not have their parents’ zeal, while the grandchildren, beguiled by comfort and aesthetics, grow lax.” However, although it is easier to pass down the expectations of a lifestyle rather than the means to maintain it, Sive acknowledges: “On the other hand, I have also encountered some families where the children see themselves as being the steward of the property for the next generation, rather than the owners, and therefore feel an intense responsibility to preserve and grow the family’s wealth.” Sive has first-hand witnessed the strain on families of dividing up the assets, from the millionaires through to the billionaires. “My personal experience is that there has been an increase [of leaving the entire fortune to the children] amongst those with a few million pounds (albeit that a small percentage may be left to charity) and a decrease amongst the multi-millionaires and billionaires. Those parents who do not leave their assets to the family can be divided into two camps: those who leave their funds to philanthropic causes and those who spend their wealth during their lifetime.” Enter the charitable colossuses of the likes of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet who have both publically stated that they’ll leave the bulk of their fortune to good causes. Buffet, having told The New York Times “I don’t believe in dynastic wealth”, always wanted his children to grow up with values. They took the bus to school and grew up in the same old house he’d bought back in 1958, which meant they never saw their immediate environment actively change as the money grew. With a net worth estimated by Forbes at $62 billion, in December 2010, Buffett signed the GatesBuffett Giving Pledge along with Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. Under which they all promised to donate a minimum of half their wealth. Although Buffett and Gates have been applauded for their generous philanthropy throughout their lives, and not just on the brink of death, Sive identifies three main intentions behind those who leave great wealth to charity.

Firstly, wanting to contribute to society; secondly, desiring a legacy in their name and thirdly, as a responsible way to keep the cushion of money away kids. The other camp – those who intend and do spend their money in their lifetime – don’t necessarily do it flippantly: early retirement, increased living costs, having to pay for their parents’ or their own geriatric care or simply wanting to catch a few cruises in the twilight years all chips away at the nest egg. But for the parent who, pushed to the limit by the One Direction posters scuffing their Farrow & Ball-painted walls, cuts their children out the will, there’s always the worry that the kids will just fight back. But will they win? Yes and no. In England and Wales children can make a claim under the 1975 Inheritance and Family Provision Act if they don’t feel reasonable provision has been made for them. Claims by adult, self-sufficient children are very unlikely to succeed, but there have been cases when an individual has been found to be unreasonable or misled. Being left less, or indeed more, than expected is also difficult. Sive says: “I had a case where the family was completely unaware of the extent of the patriarch’s wealth (he was a billionaire) until after his death. They had not been given the time during his lifetime to absorb this information and the effect it would have on their lives and relationships, and so they struggled to deal with it and the way it was divided following his death.” Nigella Lawson too has publicly spoken about not leaving any of her earnings to her kids: “I am determined that my children should have no financial security. It ruins people not having to earn money.” Indeed, but even if her two children are very successful by average standards, are they ever likely to earn a similar figure to her estimated £15 million fortune? Of course, disinheriting the children (or threatening to) isn’t the only way to teach them the value of hard work. Fifteen-year-old Brooklyn Beckham, son of David and Victoria who have an estimated combined fortune of £165 million, has been spotted working in a west London café for £2.68 an hour. Both from relatively humble beginnings, the Beckhams seem sincerely committed to teaching their four children good values Maybe the most logical solution to leaving inheritance comes from no other than an old hellraiser, Kiss guitarist Gene Simmons (worth an estimated $300 million – at the moment): “In terms of an inheritance and stuff, they’re going to be taken care of, but they will never be rich off my money,” he told CNBC. “Because every year they should be forced to get out of bed, and go out and work and make their own way.”

NEWS Volunteers from Canary Wharf Group have ‘Best Day Ever’ A team of ten volunteers from Canary Wharf Group swapped their desks for the great outdoors and joined forces with Café Forever to run a Community Fun Day at St John’s Park at the Isle of Dogs on Friday 6 June. The Fun Day offered a number of free activities, including face painting, bouncy castles and group games. Alongside these, bicycle safety checks and tagging was provided by staff from Pit Stop Cycles and The Met Police. Café Forever is a charity run by the London City Mission – a group that organise a number of programmes and activities alongside the running of a park café during the summer months. These projects successfully reach hundreds of local people and connect them to the long term work going on throughout the year at Café Forever. The Community Fun Day marks a continuation of the generous work of Canary Wharf Group volunteers, who recently took on the task of repainting the playground equipment in the park over a two year period.

Canary Wharf Group unveils its new brand Canary Wharf Group unveiled its new brand and vision, which focused on retail and residential developments both on and out of the Estate. Canary Wharf Group announced the new brand mark for the company in the same week that planning permission was received for Wood Wharf. The expansion of Canary Wharf’s retail element is another key part of the Group’s rebrand, with the new Crossrail station set to feature 115,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space. With the continuing expansion of office, retail and leisure environments, the commencement of its first residential tower, Newfoundland, and the advent of Crossrail, Canary Wharf Group’s Chairman and CEO Sir George Iacobescu commented that the rebrand: “Marks a new era for Canary Wharf Group, symbolising the Group’s evolution as a diversified developer”. The new brand mark is being rolled out across the Estate, sign-posting this evolving story.

Eid Celebrations at Canary Wharf More than 300 people from across Tower Hamlets gathered together to celebrate at the Canary Wharf Group community Eid celebrations this July. The guests were treated to an array of entertainment including dance, music and a magician, before enjoying a sit down gala dinner as they joined in commemorating the Islamic festival. Prominent guests included Rushanara Ali MP, Baroness Pola Uddin and Howard Dawber, along with representatives from local Muslim and non-Muslim groups. As well as entertainment, guests had the opportunity to learn about the significance and practises of Ramadan and Eid. Zakir Khan, head of community affairs at the Canary Wharf Group, who organised and hosted the event said: “We put this event on to bring our communities together for an evening of fun, entertainment and most importantly to encourage community cohesion.”

Luxury goes

wild

Unique wildlife encounters and luxurious bush camps placing guests at the heart of the action have made Zambia one of the world’s hottest safari destinations

“A

WORDS: LAUREN JARVIS

fter tomorrow’s bush walk, you’ll have a toe fiddle,” says my guide Brian, breaking into a smile. Bemused, I wonder what bizarre local custom I might be in for, as he’s already been trying to tempt me with the delights of barbecued mice. “They taste of fur and bone, very crunchy!” I take a rain check on the rodent action, but the following afternoon, the secret of the mysterious digit doodling is revealed. I’m led to the lounge where my feet are gently de-booted and submerged into a soothing lemon bath, given a slow scrub of salt, olive oil and herbs, and enveloped in peppermint and lavender massage lotion. Welcome to toe fiddling, Zambian style. Brian is one of the guides working for Norman Carr safaris in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. And his unusual description of a foot massage is no surprise, as pampering treats have only recently arrived in Luangwa, courtesy of the wildly luxurious lodge, Chinzombo. Stretching lazily along the bank of the

Luangwa River, Chinzombo is the sixth stylish addition to the Norman Carr portfolio in the region, which includes Nsolo, Luwi, Kapani, Kakuli and Mchenga. Imagined by South African architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens – the husband-and-wife team behind the Robison Crusoe-inspired North Island in the Seychelles – the lodge offers high levels of quality, comfort and personal service, while maintaining a harmonious balance with its natural environment. Its six spacious villas and open-air dining room, bar and lounge, combine elements of the coolest beach club (white private pool decks, chill-out tunes and hammocks), urban chic (high-tech eco-cooling systems, copper and recycled steel) and an authentic bush experience (dark woods, canvas, wild elephants outside your bathroom), offering a sophisticated oasis on the doorstep of one of the world’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries. If Shoreditch House went on safari, it would look a lot like Chinzombo. But while good looks are enough for some, Chinzombo’s rich heritage, coupled with the genuine

warmth of the company’s staff and extensive knowledge of its guides, ensures that every guest’s experience is as much about substance as style. Norman Carr established South Luangwa’s first bush camp, Nsefu, in 1950, placing visitors at the heart of the wildlife action in this very special part of southern Africa. Previously a ranger, Norman introduced the walking safari to Zambia, leading groups to shoot Luangwa’s large numbers of game, including four of the big five – elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards – with cameras, rather than guns. In one of Africa’s earliest examples of responsible tourism, he formed partnerships with local tribespeople, encouraging them to dedicate land to conservation, with the promise that they would reap the rewards. Over 60 years later, while Norman is no longer with us, the company continues to give back to that community, funding a school, health projects, scholarships and training for local guides. Scooping a host of accolades, including the 2014 Safari Awards’ Best Guiding Team and Best Walking Safaris in Africa (Chinzombo also stole Best New Safari Camp in Africa), Norman Carr’s experienced crew is entirely Zambian and wholly world-class. Which is reassuring, as in Africa, without the right guide, not only may you miss some exceptional wildlife, you could end up being the game instead of viewing it. I try not to dwell on this thought, as I pull on my boots at 6am, ready for a day in the bush after spending the night at Nsolo, a more rustic – but equally as unique – camp in a remote region of South Luangwa. Four large

thatched chalets on raised wooden decks offer low-key luxury, with private verandahs and open-sky bathrooms overlooking the hippos wallowing in the Luwi River. I head out into the cool morning air for a sunrise breakfast of fruit, eggs, porridge and coffee around the campfire, as giraffes wander down to the river to drink. Like all our bush meals, half the pleasure is in the food: light tarts, roulades and salads for brunch; rich lemon and chocolate cakes for afternoon tea; delicious pastas, risottos and grills for dinner. The other half is in the location: overlooking a river while elephants swim to shore; watching baby baboons playing from the deck; dining in a torch-lit riverbed under a dazzling star-spangled sky. Throw in morning tea breaks in the shade of ancient baobab trees, and sundowners next to waterholes where buffaloes take a dip, and you’ll never want to eat al desko, or drink at Davy’s again. After breakfast, we set off for Luwi. Eight kilometres from Nsolo, this romantic camp nestles under giant mahogany trees, close to a lagoon which harbours a swampy soup of hippos, crocodiles and Nile cabbage. Like its neighbour, the camp is dismantled before the rains and rebuilt at the start of the dry season. Its four

thatched bamboo chalets are simple but comfy, with large bedrooms, soft beds and open-air bathrooms that truly connect guests with nature. Who needs rubber ducks, when there are bush babies climbing trees above your shower? Land Rovers are used for game drives, customised for optimum viewing with tiered seats and open sides, plus blankets for early-morning chills. But today, we’re following in the steps of Africa’s past trophy hunters, tracking lions… on foot. Moving quietly in single file, with Brian in the lead and an armed scout behind, we cross winding, sandy river beds, past zebras, wildebeest and impala. Emerald green blankets of love birds take flight as we scrunch through the bush, while lilacbreasted rollers flash iridescent turquoise and violet feathers through the mopane groves. As the heat rises, we pause for tea and cautious bathroom breaks behind tamarind trees, acutely aware as we walk over leopard, wild dog and hyena tracks and scattered, crunched bone, that in this land, we’re no longer at the top of the food chain. Walking through the tall elephant grass, our senses are heightened, as we listen out for every sound, hoping it may lead us to the pride that was heard calling near

Instead, wandering this timeless landscape soothes the soul. Palma, Mallorca [City Break]

The capital of Mallorca and the Balearic Islands is filled with Catalan charm WORDS: Elle Blakeman

TRAVEL travel

O

nce the seat of the island’s monarchy and aristocracy, Palma’s beautiful cobbled streets and wide tree-lined avenues are often overlooked for the hedonist delights of the neighbouring Ibiza. However there is much to find here and visitors who take the time to explore, rather than simply head off to beach resorts or yachts, will be handsomely rewarded, as local festivals, traditional architecture and delicious food conspire for an enchanting holiday. If you’re looking for Catalan charm, the Cathedral, known locally as the La Seu, a stunning Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral overlooking the Parc de la Mar and the Mediterranen Sea is the ideal place to start. Standing at 44 metres tall and 121 metres long, this beautiful and towering building is the ideal place to soak in the Catholic roots of the island, while the maze of houses below in the old town display the traditional architecture of this ancient city. Take a wonder down the tree-lined, flower-filled Paseo de Born in downtown Palma, a beautiful avenue that leads into a wealth of luxury shopping – think Loewe, Tous and Louis Vuitton to name but a few. Head down the side streets to uncover tiny tapas bars serving delicious ham croquettes and olives from the nearby groves alongside local wine that will have you decide to quit your life and move here. Meanwhile, those in search of luxury will not be disappointed, Palma plays host to some of the most discerning guests in the world: Abramovich, Cavalli, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are all often spotted on these fair shores. For serious glamour, head to Puerto Portals, the most prestigious nautical complex of the island, attached to the town of Portal Nous. This stunning marina houses a wealth of luxury shopping, where you can buy anything from a set of pearls to a superyacht, in addition to some of the best bars and restaurants in Palma. If you’re there in the morning, stop by Wellies Bar for a coffee on the pavement terrace. Later, head to Flanigan for an elegant lunch of Jamón ibérico and fresh seafood (the best in town) and watch the world and its celebrities go by.

STAY Just a short taxi ride away from Palma (and happily right on the beach) is the new ME Mallorca Hotel, the latest in the luxury brand’s portfolio. If you’ve been to the ME rooftop in London, you’ll know what to expect (and if you haven’t, go immediately): think chic daybeds, beautiful people and a cocktail menu to die for. The ME Mallorca is a little more relaxed than its London counterpart, more than helped by the large pool, beach adjacent position and virtually psychic staff who appear whenever you need them. Rooms are spacious and open-plan, all facing the sea just a few feet away and during the day the sounds from the neighbouring Nikki Beach add a chilled Ibiza-style ambiance, without the drama. At night, order dinner at the outdoor restaurant and take in the beautiful coastal views – heaven. D Rooms, from £140 per night. Avenida Notario Alemany, no 1, Calvià Beach Resort, memallorca@melia.com

SPARE AFTERNOON Put on your most glamorous Heidi Klein outfit and step over the threshold to Nikki Beach, helpfully located right, next, door. Lunchtime is best (unless you are in the Champagne-spraying crowd, in which case head here after dark), you can rent a huge daybed, which are tended to regularly by handsome waiters who live in fear of guests wanting for anything. Go hungry as the food is superb – fresh salads, juicy tiger prawns and perfectly cooked beef fillet (all fabulously large portions thanks to Nikki Beach’s American roots, but what the hell, you’re on holiday), but the real star of the menu is the sushi, served dramatically on a ‘dragon boat’. Afterwards head back to your daybed, glass of Rioja in hand and enjoy the enviable pace of life here. D nikkibeach.com. This month’s parties include: Oktoberfest, 6 September, Argentinean Beach BBQ, 13 September, Jet Set Saturday 20 September and the Annual Season Closing Red Party 27 September.

Hidden Talents Brilliant fuel economy, no road tax and free entry into the Congestion Zone, Porsche’s new Cayenne S E-Hyrbid has a lot going for it WORDS: MATTHEW CARTER

P

orsche calls it the new-generation Cayenne, but you’ll need to be an expert to spot the differences between this and the wildly successful second-generation model introduced in 2010 (there are some visual differences between the current and new models, notably at the front where there is a revised nose, new bonnet and front wings. It still helps to have old and new side-by-side, though). Unless you look under the bonnet, that is. The highlight of the new range is the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid with a 95hp electric motor to supplement a 333hp supercharged 3.0-litre petrol V6. With a combined power of well over 400hp, it has a top speed of more than 150mph and a sub 6 sec time for the 0-62 sprint. But those aren’t the really impressive figures. Thanks to the hybrid technology, the car has a combined fuel economy figure of 83mpg. Better still, it produces just 79g/km of CO2, meaning you’ll pay no road tax and you’ll be allowed into the Congestion Charge zone for free. How does a Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) differ from an ordinary hybrid like the Toyota Prius? Simply that they

have far bigger batteries and electric motors, allowing them to travel much further on battery power alone. As the name implies, the battery can be recharged by being plugged into the mains, but it can also be recharged by the petrol engine on a long run. Interestingly, Porsche has decided to price the E-Hybrid identically to the revised V8-powered and slightly quicker Cayenne S Diesel – you pays your money… D On sale from October, the latest Cayenne range

CIRCUIT TRAINING A near empty race track, a rapid Peugeot and a driving coach riding pillion to offer advice… Matthew Carter laps it up

S

ee that BRAKE board?” asks the man in the passenger seat. I nod and he immediately says: “Ignore it. You can brake much later than that…” We are at Brands Hatch in Kent, pounding round the swooping Indy circuit in the most powerful production Peugeot ever produced – the RCZ R coupé. But rather than ignore the board I ignore him and brake hard where it’s been suggested it might be sensible

I brake in a straight line, turn sharply into the corner and gradually squeeze the throttle (too much and we’ll understeer straight off) before burying it into the carpet once the car is straight again. “Much better,” comes the laconic comment from the appropriately named Colin Tester to my left. Colin is a car preparation expert and race driver, but today he’s a driving coach on hand to help me get the most out of the hottest Peugeot to leave the stable.

“Essentially, the R version gives the RCZ some balls and lifts the Pug to a point where, on paper at least, it’s a genuine rival for the Audi TTS and the VW Golf R” to do so. I was wrong. Impetus lost, we crawl round the next corner – the Druids Hairpin. It might not be the fastest corner in motor racing, but it can certainly be tackled with rather more gusto that I am managing. Next time around I swallow a brave pill and whistle past the BRAKE board, stamping the middle pedal yards later than before.

The striking RCZ coupé has been around for a couple of years now, but the ‘R’ version is new. There’s more power and less weight, bigger wheels, lowered suspension, a clever chassis and a tougher look with a fixed rear spoiler… plus some exceptionally powerful brakes, too. Essentially, it gives the RCZ some balls and lifts the Pug to a point where, on paper at least, it’s a genuine

motoring

rival for the Audi TTS and the VW Golf R. So why Brands Hatch and why a track test for what’s essentially a road car? Simply that MotorSport Vision, the company run by former F1 driver Jonathan Palmer which owns Brands and a number of other circuits in the UK, uses the RCZ R for track days and driver tuition. And if it’s good enough for the next Lewis Hamilton, it’s good enough for me. So what this review won’t do is tell you how good the ride is (Brands is too smooth) or how easy it is to live with day-to-day. But it will give an indication of how it goes. And the answer to that is, pretty damn well. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the R is its engine. A top speed that has been limited to 155mph, a sub 6 sec time for the 0-62mph sprint and a healthy 270hp would suggest a fairly substantial lump under the bonnet: certainly a 2-litre, if not something bigger. In fact, it is powered by a lightweight unit displacing a mere 1.6 litres. Granted it has a turbocharger to help produce that prodigious power output, but this is a fine example of a modern engine, created to deliver ample power at the same time as producing low emissions and good economy. On the track it is eager to rev and rev hard. If there is any turbo lag – that pause between hitting the accelerator and the message getting through to the engine – it is not evident on the track. The manual six-speed gearbox – no fancy semi automatic with flappy paddles here – is a joy to use, snicking in and out of gear with the minimum of effort. The steering is excellent, positive and full of feeling, while the way the car puts its power down is an object lesson in how to make a front-wheel car handle. It’s down to a clever Torsen differential, those bigger wheels and tyres and bespoke suspension settings. The grippy sports seats help, too. Attacking the bends at Brands, especially the awesome Paddock Hill where the road drops away dramatically halfway through the corner, the Pug feels composed, pokey and a lot of fun. And as alluded to earlier, the brakes are remarkable.

The discs ‘float’ on pins which not only reduce weight but also aid cooling: never did they lose feel or start to fade, despite the pounding they were getting. After a dozen or so hard laps, it’s back to the pits to let everything cool down, giving time to have a closer look at the car. In a world of lookalike three-door hot hatches, the RCZ is refreshingly different, with its ‘double bubble’ roof and dramatically extended wheel arches. In ‘R’ guise it is well-equipped, too, with leather/ alcantara trim, sat nav and 19-inch alloys all as standard. But where it really excels is in the driving experience provided by the trick chassis and that remarkable engine… little wonder the R costs £5.5k more than the 200hp GT model. Worth every penny, though. D An hour-long session at Brands Hatch with expert tuition and in one of the RCZ Rs (save wear on your tyres and engine – you know it makes sense) is available from £250. Head msvtrackdays.com for all the information.

the rivals Audi TTS Similar power to the Pug, but with quattro fourwheel drive and a premium feel. But then it does cost £36K… and that’s before you start ticking the options. New model due soon. Hardly exclusive.

Nissan 370Z Getting a bit long in the tooth now, the 370Z is a performance bargain with rear-wheel drive, ample power and masses of kit. The interior is a bit plasticky and the Nissan badge could be a hindrance.

The

big hitter

W

atford, as even its most zealous fan would admit, is not known for its glamour. So I am apprehensive when I get the call to go and meet Paul McGinley, one of golf’s superstars, at a hotel there. As the taxi pulls into The Grove, however, I realise I’m not at any normal M25-straddling lodge. This is a 300-acre plot with a 7,000-yard championship golf course designed by one of the greatest course-designers, Kyle Phillips. It’s a world-class golfers’ resort, drawing the biggest and best players into its orbit. One of whom is McGinley, a man who at so many points in his life might never have picked up his golf clubs professionally. “Yes, my background is more business than golf,” he says. “I worked for the European Commission for six months and an investment company in Dublin for another six.” He also has a diploma in marketing and an international business degree. The assumption that people at the top of the game are child prodigies still lingers in most areas of achievement, and I’m surprised to find he wasn’t born immediately beating a path towards the irons. “Not at all, quite the opposite, in fact. I used to play Gaelic football professionally until I broke my knee cap.” I want to ask something about the outfits, who doesn’t. Are the garish colours and checks of golf a deliberate statement against counter-culture or should we stop trying to read irony into everything? But just as I start, his phone goes off. “No Dad, I didn’t watch the game, it’s not shown on English TV.” An impish smile breaks out across his face. I work out that it’s not golf they are talking about but Gaelic football. “Listen, I got an interview; got to go,”

his Northern Irish accent lilts beautifully. “OK, so I was at a US university doing an international business degree on a golf scholarship, thinking I’d kill two birds with one stone; either my golf wouldn’t improve and I’d have qualifications, or it would and I’d go somewhere.” Good logic, although I can’t shrug off the fact that the European Ryder Cup captain is talking as if he once might not have been good enough to go pro. Seizing on this, I wonder what Paul would have told himself if he could revisit his 22-year-old self at this crucial stage of his golfing career. “I’d tell myself to have a bit more clarity and stubbornness. I’ve learned that whether it is in sport or business, you have to focus. It’s like climbing a tree; many of us climb a little and then get distracted by branches and tangents. “I’d also tell myself, you are not perfect but you’ve got your own DNA, you’ve got to fulfil your potential, your capacity; don’t go trying to be something you’re not.” This is interesting territory; why would this advice have been useful to the young McGinley? “I guess too many times I assumed there were recipe books for success and pushed myself into the moulds of others. “Bottom line is, I’m five foot seven so I’m never going to be a power-hitter. Spend energy on your strengths, not trying to be a textbook player.” 2002 was McGinley’s first Ryder Cup and he’s come a long way since. I undiplomatically suggest he’s coming to the end of his career. There is a hard edge to McGinley but it’s buttered with charm. When he’s giving his speeches he’s not there suffering, waiting to clamber into the golf buggy, he’s there to learn. He’s just returned from an awards ceremony for entrepreneurs, which clearly was a fun challenge for the golfer. “It was in Morocco, and I thought we would be dealing with young guys with big dreams. Instead, the average turnover of the 52 entrants was £700 million.” Is McGinley comfortable with this side of the industry? “Often in M&A (mergers and acquisitions)

there are companies from different cultures trying to hit on the correct modus operandi, which can be difficult; in fact, it often requires Ban Ki-moon skills. I impart some of the experiences I’ve had leading the European Cup team, getting people from all over the place to gel.” But the golfer wants to get back to basics: “It is ultimately about having fire in your belly. That is where everything starts. If you don’t, life is tough. Once you have that energy, it’s about reflecting on how to use that energy wisely, getting yourself off autopilot.” As the world’s golfers turn their eyes to Gleneagles, we’ll soon see just how much fire McGinely has. Brazilian Brunch Next time you’re south of the river, head to Blackheath and get a table in CAU. Playing homage to Buenos Aires, the menu channels Argentinian cuisine – think steaks drizzled in the likes of chili, garlic and paprika, with a focus on big flavours. Now, a new brunch menu has been launched at CAU Blackheath, available every day between 10am – 1pm. A typical, wholesome fry up and homemade porridge is on offer, but ‘when in Argentina’ why not try the Latin eggs with grilled avocado and poached eggs dashed with chimichurri? Or, we recommend the spiced baked eggs: with tomato and jalapeño sauce, black beans and toasted sourdough soldiers? D caurestaurants.com

The machine carbonates liquid with a refillable CO2 cylinder, which you can customise to make your drink as bubbily as you should so wish. It’s available in four colours so you can match it to your counter top and there’s a range of 40 different flavoured sachets to create sodas with. It’s pretty entertaining, particularly if you use it to make an endless stream of G&Ts, plus it saves on lugging heavy bottles of sparkling water from the supermarket and on wasting plastic bottles. hen you board an airplane, it doesn’t matter whether you turn left or right – you know that the culinary delights that await you on your journey will be anything but Michelin-starred. Eating at altitude has always been a challenge, which is why this month’s Dinner in the Sky event here in Canary Wharf is eagerly awaited – after all, who doesn’t want to eat a steak 100 feet from the ground? As with any usual flight, guests arrive 45 minutes prior to take-off, they are then served a glass of chilled Champagne and taken through check-in. Of course instead of an Airbus A380, there’s a boardroom-style dining table with 22 seats ready to be raised into the sky – a sort of fine-dining meets Alton Towers. Guests are securely

fastened in (thankfully – you can only imagine what seems like a good idea after a few glasses of bubbly…) before the platform is raised 100 feet from the ground and you become part of the Canary Wharf skyline. Putting the ‘up’ into pop-up, this open-air restaurant will be welcoming five chefs from London’s best Michelinstarred haunts: breakfasts by Anna Hansen’s The Modern Pantry, to lunch and dinner menus from some of the capital’s best Michelin-starred chefs and restaurants – Benares’ Atul Kochhar, Club Gascon’s Pascal Aussignac, Angler’s Tony Fleming, L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon’s Xavier Boyer, and Alyn Williams from Alyn Williams at The Westbury. This star-studded, and frankly quite fearless, line-up will each recreate their signature menus and dining experiences whilst cooking in the air. On the sky-high platform, the food will be prepared and served in front of diners by each chef and their team, busying themselves in a tiny kitchen in the centre of the table. “At that height, you don’t want to be serving soup and as it’s an alfresco experience, micro herbs could be a big mistake!” says Atul Kocchar. Like Dans Le Noir and other experimental dining before them, the change in atmosphere can heighten your senses (no pun intended), and the food, while award-

DINING on the EDGE Five other gourmet experiences that will see your adrenaline pumping 1. DEADLY DELICACY

2. UNDER THE SEA

Based in the lively Ginza district of Japan’s capital Tokyo, Fugu Fukuji is a Michelin-starred restaurant with a difference. Fugu Fukuji serves the potentially deadly pufferfish. Known as Fugu in Japan, pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, a deadly toxin that is more than a thousands times more poisonous than cyanide. In fact, the poison in one pufferfish is enough to kill 30 people, and what’s worse is that there is no known antidote. A local delicacy that has killed 23 people in Japan since 2000, according to government figures.

The ITHAA Undersea Restaurant at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Resort needs to be seen to be believed. Rated “the most beautiful restaurant in the world” by the New York Daily News in 2014, ITHAA sits five metres below the crystal clear water, offering 180-degree panoramic views of the vibrant coral gardens surrounding it. ITHAA (meaning ‘mother of pearl’ in the Maldivian language of Dihevi) serves exciting contemporary European cuisine in a six-course set dinner menu. Expect indulgences such as caviar for dinner, while the four-course lunch menu offers lighter fare.

winning on the ground, can take on a whole new meaning when you are dangled over the city below. After all, it takes a brave person to look down, so your concentration is entirely held by both the chef and the food at all times. “Although you are so high in the air with limitless space around you, it is quite an intimate experience,” says Pascal Aussignac. “Because the roof is quite low you feel as though you are inside a magical floating chocolate box.” As intimate as the space may feel, it is still not without its challenges as a venue: “When my children were young, my wife fastened a small loop that attached baby cutlery to their wrist so they couldn’t lose it. I have to admit I thought about pitching this idea when asked to cook 100 feet in the air,” says Atul Kochhar. Indeed, in most places if you drop your fork on the floor it will be swiftly replaced with a clean one by an observant waiter. However, at 100 feet, dropping your cutlery isn’t an option. “Here at Benares we like to avoid the expected,” Kochhar explains. “We’re excited to be showcasing an Indian charcuterie dish for London in the Sky. It is a truly inspirational dish of smoked duck breast served with textures of chick pea, the flavours of which fully complement the exhilaration of dining at such a great height.” Cooking at such an altitude means that even the most simple of dishes becomes complicated, yet the chefs, with the eyes of the world’s most notoriously hard-to-impress

3. BLIND DATE Dans Le Noir have restaurants in Paris, St Petersburg, London and Barcelona. The concept is that they serve their guest in complete darkness. The group claim that through limiting the sense of sight, other senses are intensified. Diners have little knowledge of the entrées, appetisers, desserts and wine choices of their meal, which are primarily inspired by French cuisine. Diners are served by either blind or visually impaired waiting staff and a percentage of the profits of the restaurants fund research for visual disabilities.

“Although you are so high in the air with limitless space around you, it is quite an intimate experience,” – Pascal Aussignac city upon them, have chosen to up the stakes (sorry) with even more complex menus than they serve on the ground: think Aussignac’s duck fried in quinoa, panko, and egg topped with truffle cream and freshly grated truffle all placed on top of filo pastry – the man clearly likes to live on the edge (again, sorry). Alongside the opportunity to savour breakfast, lunch and dinner with Champagne, there will also be ‘canapé flights’ in the afternoon and evening, showcasing the dramatic night-time city backdrop. 4. GLACIAL GASTRONOMY The Ice Restaurant at Finland’s Snow Village in Lainio is magnificent. Re-opening for the 2014/2015 season on 10 December, the interior decoration is all naturally made of ice and snow, tastefully illuminated with colourful lights and candles. The temperature inside the ice restaurant is always between -2 and -5 Celsius degrees, so remember to wrap up warm.

5. MAGICAL GROTTO Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Hotel Ristorante Grotta Palazzese in Puglia is carved among a stunning scenery of rocks and caves that have wowed visitors since ancient times. For one of the world’s most unique dining experiences, guests can watch waves crash beneath them 74 feet above sea level.

Off The Grill West India Quay’s Manhattan Grill has been nominated for London Restaurant of the Year – we couldn’t wait for the results to try it out WORDS: Melissa emerson

F

or meat-lovers dining at Manhattan Grill, choice is kept primitively simple. Like any aspirational steak restaurant, the focus is clearly on exceptional cuts of meat, and quality over quantity. With just two main options for steak, we had high expectations. The real focus was on USDA prime Black Angus from Creekstone Farms in Kansas. Patience is a virtue, and the Angus Beefs are grain-fed for 150 days and wet-aged for 28 days, a laborious process that has evidently paid off, judging by the distinctive marbling effect and texture. Option B was Gold Label dry-aged Scottish Aberdeen Angus from Inverurie:

and if it’s all a bit overwhelming, seasonal specials are on offer alternatives such as king prawns and asparagus linguine and corn-fed chicken. However, this feels a little like going to Disneyland and avoiding Space Mountain. Now, a red meat virtually demands an excellent red wine, and the Manhattan Grill have expert sommeliers on hand to advise on the right match and keep the wine flowing. Uniquely (and happily, for someone who is constantly ordering bottles of wine by waving a finger over the menu and hoping for the best), the restaurant have invested in a fairly impressive piece of technology, allowing us to sample each of the wines on offer, from the smooth Chileans and

“Everything is cooked on the kitchen’s open and violently hot Montague Broiler” grass-fed, pure-bred and dry-aged for 28 days. Everything is cooked on the kitchen’s open and violently hot Montague Broiler (650 degrees Celsius is no laughing matter) – you quickly learn not too stand too close. Such fine ingredients need an equally good chef to do them justice, and we felt in safe hands with Damian Trejo on board. Originally from Mexico City, he has cooked for both Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama – no pressure then. Of course the steak isn’t compulsory,

Argentinians to the impressive dark reds from the Baron Rothschild estate. This wine-preserving system means also means that wine choice isn’t restricted to bottles, so you can still order fine wines by the glass. We end with a desert that remains the only in living memory to have defeated me (just). Which just goes to show that American portion sizes have officially hit Canary Wharf. hat’s so interesting? We hear a lot about the rise of China as a cultural, as well as a financial power, and Jacky Tsai’s work is a brilliant synthesis of the traditions of Chinese art with a Western sensibility that shines a new light on ancient symbolism and technique. Tsai’s highly original East-West vision is a product of his own background. Born in Shanghai, he moved to London to study at prestigious art school Central St Martins College of Art and Design in 2006, and has lived in the capital ever since. His work is labour intensive and his pieces are predominantly one-offs. “Each piece takes a few months to make”, he explains, “I’m combining several different techniques to create my ‘fusion’ art”. The results are extraordinary. Tsai’s captivating, signature ‘floral skull’ is exquisitely lacquer-carved, a technique that both references an important artistic tradition, but importantly, also keeps alive a tradition on the edge of extinction. Carved lacquer-ware, also known as ‘TiHong’ which translates as ‘Carving the Red’, is one of China’s traditional crafts. The process was first invented during the Tang Dynasty, more than 1600 years ago and blossomed during the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The technique involves applying a natural lacquer onto a wooden surface, then carefully engraving delicate designs into the lacquer. The panel is coated with several dozen layers of lacquer, each of which must dry naturally to avoid cracks appearing in the future. Young people now are reluctant to learn the skills of

lacquer-carving, and many elders in the business have passed away. Nowadays, there are only about twenty trained craftsmen left in China who have this skill. Tsai is on a mission to preserve, reinvigorate and promote these unique traditions through his art. Another ancient skill he champions is the use of the techniques of Su Xiu embroidery on silk (originally from the city Suzhou near Shanghai) and Cloisonné, an ancient decorative technique using vitreous enamel and metal, used in China since the fourteenth century. Not content with straddling the East-West divide, Tsai also moves seamlessly between the worlds of art and fashion, working for labels including Alexander McQueen and Richemont brand Shanghai Tang on accessory ranges and developing his eponymous fashion label. SALES MARK BENNETT, senior negotiator at Knight Frank Wapping, comments on the trends in the residential sales market The Wapping and City market has performed very well year to date, with an annual growth rate of 9.2 per cent for Wapping and when combined with the City and Fringes, 16.1 per cent. This is a stark contrast to some Central London areas that have seen growth start to tail off recently. It is easy to see why buyers are still lining up to purchase City and river fronted properties, as all the sparkling new buildings take shape in the London skyline. The renewed economic growth, coupled with historically low interest rates has seen demand, not only from the domestic market but also international, as buyers wait to purchase in this highly competitive market. The Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney

“Stricter mortgage lending, which came into effect on April this year, has had some effect on cooling the market” has recently been trying to cool the marketplace. The general consensus from property professionals suggests the introduction of stricter mortgage lending, which came into effect in April this year, has had some effect on cooling the market. Despite this, an appetite from some buyers still remains in the core and sub two million brackets, with purchasers looking to take advantage of cheap mortgage money before any potential rate rise. However, both buyers’ and sellers’ expectations on growth are having to realign due to the lending caps now in place on people attempting to borrow more than 4.5 times their annual income. As people start to return from the summer break, making plans to be in their new home before Christmas, it is expected that quarter three and four will remain busy but the market place will inevitably stabilise as growth slows to a more sustainable rate.

Piece of Mind LuxDeco.com has exclusively launched the Helen Green London’s debut furniture collection. The interior design firm is known for creating an atmosphere of ‘liveable luxury’ and this collection’s British-made furniture was created to complement both classic and contemporary homes. Natalia Miyar, head of design, explained her inspiration behind the pieces’ subtle tones, natural materials and polished but simple finishes: “The root of my style is the contrast of materials – luxurious materials such as polished metal and marble against warm textured wood, linen or velvet.” D luxdeco.com

NEWS  Well connected This month a series of contemporary two and three bedroom apartments are set to launch within King’s Cross’ highly anticipated Plimsoll Building. Each of the 74 apartments in the Summer collection features light and open designs, making the very most of this building’s waterside aspect. Situated alongside Regent’s Canal, the Plimsoll Building is just a few minutes’ walk from the most connected transport hub in London, and the UK’s high-speed rail link to Europe. The neighbourhood itself offers an exciting mix of restaurants, bars, galleries, museums and concert venues, not to mention a unique new retail quarter with boutiques, stalls and cafes. Location aside, the Summer collection offers truly special properties to call home. D Prices for a two bedroom apartment start from £985,000. For more details contact Knight Frank on 020 7861 5499. knightfrank.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW? According to Halifax, UK house prices in July were up 10.2 per cent from a year earlier. The lender said this is the biggest annual change since September 2007 and makes the average home worth £186,332.

LETTINGS GARY HALL, partner and department head at Knight Frank Wapping, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market Three statistics in July underlined how the prime central London rentals market is cementing a recovery that began at the start of this year. First, rental values grew on an annual basis for the first time since May 2012. Values were 0.5 per cent higher than July 2013 and have grown 1.8 per cent since January. Second, prime central London rental yields rose for the first time since April 2011. The increase was only 0.01 per cent to 2.81 per cent but the significance is that it ended a 38-month period of decline. The third indicator is that the number of prime central London tenancies agreed in July by Knight Frank was the highest ever. The recovery began as signs of life returned to the UK economy and global companies began to expand and relocate more staff to London on larger accommodation budgets. As a result, the number of viewings has risen 25.6 per cent since July last year and the number of new prospective tenants rose 16.5 per cent over the same period. To some degree, a reversal of fortune has taken place between the sales and lettings markets. Growth is slowing in the sales market as both the general election and an interest rate rise approach. The overwhelming mood in the sales market is one of uncertainty, leading some buyers to become renters and some vendors to become landlords, particularly in the prime and super prime markets where growth in the sales market has slowed to a greater extent. As a result, rental value growth has been stronger in the higher price brackets and higher for houses than flats. Values for properties over £1,500 per week have risen 0.8 per cent in the last year and 2.2 per cent since the start of the year. By contrast, rental values for properties between £500 and £1,500 per week are 0.2 per cent down on last July and have risen 1.9 per cent since January. Given what is happening in the sales and lettings markets, rental yields should continue to climb steadily in the second half of the year.

someone who knows Local and industry insider Graham Lawes, Associate Director of Residential at JLL, has lived in Blackheath all of his life and has worked in the local property industry for 21 years What’s your favourite thing about living in Blackheath? I grew up close to the heath and have always loved the area. Blackheath has a great community spirit and many of my childhood friends still live here with their children. I used to love being taken to the fairs on the heath and it gives me great pleasure to return with my two small children.

Street. It was famous as a rallying place for Wat Tyler’s Peasants’ Revolt in 1381 and a road is named after him. Today, we think of Blackheath as the starting point for the London Marathon but it was also the first place where golf was played in England and the oldest rugby football club, Blackheath, started playing on the heath. Henry VIII first met Anne of Cleves on Blackheath and didn’t like her.

Why do you think Blackheath is so appealing to families? The open heath, the tree lined streets with lovely family homes and the proximity to central London, Canary Wharf and Kent. The schools are excellent and there is so much going on in the locality.

What properties do JLL currently have available in the area? At JLL we have some very interesting properties available including the letting of a Grade II Listed Georgian house facing the heath. We are agents for many of the new developments in the immediate area and we have some delightful Victorian family homes for sale.

How do you get to work? Most of the time I drive, as I need my car to visit clients. Blackheath is well served by public transport which links in with the newer DLR, Jubilee Line, river bus and even the cable car at the Peninsula. Where’s your favourite spot for coffee and dinner? Boulangerie Jade. Excellent coffee, quirky bone china cups and most importantly, it’s a wonderful patisserie. Blackheath Village is a foodie’s haven with so many restaurants. I am particularly fond of Everest Inn, the award winning Nepalese restaurant. It is always a treat eat there and I have been known to order a take-away. Can you tell us about the history of Blackheath? The Romans used the open heath as a road which later became Watling

Do you think Blackheath is a good place to invest in property? Yes, it is a great place to invest, but this has always been the case. It is a popular residential area with excellent family housing stock. This is partly due to the height above sea level which made it popular from the Georgian period onwards. Have you noticed any trends in the type of people living in the area? We have noticed how many older people are downsizing from their larger family homes. These homes are being purchased by young families, usually professionals with two incomes. The downsizers seem to remain in the area, often buying new build apartments. D jll.co.uk/residential

STATE OF THE MARKET Lettings impact market

Rate Speculation Soars

JASON TAYLOR, sales director at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

ALASDAIR CARPENTER, managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

the usual trend of the sales market slowing down over the summer months does not seem to be apparent this year in East London. Whilst the sales market is still active, the lettings market has even shifted up a gear, with many lets being agreed within days of the properties being marketed. Many tenants are asking to have fixed term contracts agreed for a minimum of two or three years. Commitments such as these from tenants and landlords demonstrate that many people are very comfortable with the market in terms of stability and confidence. Antaeus Schulz, lettings executive and valuer at Franklyn James, comments on the lettings market: “In the last two months, we at Franklyn James have seen huge growth. This has been brought about by single professionals and sharers in areas that are popular and in demand, like Wapping, Limehouse and Canary Wharf, which have outperformed all prime London locations. With more than 100,000 people employed in the Canary Wharf district, our registered applicant database is ever growing, as the need to find the ideal property in the perfect location close to work is ever more pressing. “2015 may see the lettings market grow even stronger with many new build apartments being constructed in E14 and E16, plus Canary Wharf is set to double in size over the next ten years, creating thousands of new employment opportunities in and around the area.

The Bank of England has sharply increased its growth forecast for the UK economy in 2014 but the timing of the inevitable increase in interest rates is still unclear. Just today the Bank of England has announced it will only start increasing its record low base rate gradually when it believes wages and productivity have started to demonstrate significant increases. With recent data pointing towards fairly weak rises in pay, it makes economic sense to avoid putting extra pressure on mortgage holders through raising rates. However, as mortgage lending increases month on month and prices have increased sharply in recent times the Bank will likely be in a dilemma as to when they can introduce the first increase without upsetting the apple cart of wider economic recovery and fiscal prosperity. Affordability tests introduced by lenders following the Mortgage Market Review have gone some way to slightly cool the rampant sales market. Interestingly the one area of the market that is still incredibly bullish is buy to let investment. The Council of Mortgage Lenders have reported a staggering 23 per cent year on year increase in the number of landlords mortgaging. Many landlords are mortgaging their existing portfolios in order to re-invest and acquire further investment properties. Buy-to-let properties have always offered investors more certainty than the stock market and considerably higher yields than can be returned on cash held in most bank accounts. It is probably no coincidence that this area is thriving when buy to let does not fall within the remit of the Mortgage Market Review. As the housing market begins to show the first signs of cooling it is possibly a case of good timing that the Bank of England has chosen not to act hastily and raise the base rate. It is inevitable the rate will increase but the question of when still remains uncertain.

Of what we’ve seen in an enticing glimpse of the now completed two-bedroom show apartments located in Cambridge House, we can’t help but be impressed and relieved that One Tower Bridge is living up to all the hype, not to mention its sought after location. Internationally-renowned architectural firm, Squire and Partners, is responsible for the carefully considered design of One Tower Bridge, which complements the existing skyline while optimising the phenomenal views across the River Thames. Furthermore, this world-class design is carried through to the interior of each apartment by acclaimed designers, Casa Forma and Honky.
