M Change is afoot in the fashion world; while questions are being raised as to the practicality of the fashion calendar, brands

such as Burberry have adopted a ‘see now, buy now’ approach, enabling customers to buy designs straight from the catwalk.

Another marked change is the rise to dominance of mid-market brands, where the likes of Whistles and Maje are thriving. Scarlett Russell explores fashion’s ‘sweet spot’ on page 18. One woman set upon making a change is Phoebe Gormley – Savile Row’s first women’s tailor. We talk to her about building a business in a man’s world on page 38. Richard Brown reports

atch Land is in a state of flux; after many of the industry’s power players derided the smartwatch, TAG

Heuer has announced it shifted 50,000 of its Connected watches last year, helping increase revenue by ten per cent. Elsewhere, Audemars Piguet announced turnover of almost £720m in 2016; while Richard Mille has just unveiled another watch that reaches the million-pound mark. And yet, overall, for the past 18 months Swiss watch exports have been in steady decline, with brands forced to buy back £1billion of unsold stock in the first ten months of last year. So, what can we glean from the wares of the 30 brands that exhibited at the first major watch show of 2017? For some, it was all about consolidation, for others, it was a case of: ‘Crisis? What crisis?’.

On favourite hobbs pieces… “My favourite pieces are from our new premium occasionwear collection ‘By Invitation’. The original artwork for the prints was hand-painted by a studio located near Lake Como in Italy. The cherry blossom print makes me think of spring and trees bursting into bloom after a long winter.”

On best advice… “Product-wise, always use the best possible fabrics you can afford. You can see it and feel it, and it makes such a difference when you wear it. There is no substitute for good quality.”

On grooming… “I have a very busy life so I need to be extremely organised. I book regular hair appointments one year in advance and a manicure every three weeks. I don’t have the time to pamper myself too much but I do treat myself to a spa day once a year.” ph oto gr aphy / © hobbs by invitation s/s 17

IS IT WORTH CHECKING YOUR SCALP? Top salon owner Sean Hanna talks about his new Hair & Scalp MOT. It’s a funny thing; you would think that we’d feel quite comfortable discussing our scalp issues with our hairdresser but quite often this isn’t true. The health of your scalp is just as important as the health of your hair so the salon should be the perfect place to discuss your scalp in detail. I think we can sometimes be embarrassed to talk about our oily scalp or dandruff, which is one of the reasons I have developed our Hair & Scalp MOT. It’s a simple but effective 5 step consultation which focuses on the health of your hair and scalp.

HAIR SCALP MOT Book your complementary 5 step hair and scalp MOT today! Download your voucher to recieve a FREE treatment worth £15 to replenish and boost the condition of your hair. Discover more at seanhanna.com

seanhannasalons

Jubilee Place 020 7513 2660

IT ALL STARTS WITH THE SCALP There are a number of scalp conditions that your stylist will be able to identify such as dandruff, eczema, oiliness and inflammation. All of these are quite common and a professional hairdresser is trained to deal with them. In most cases they will be able to recommend products and/or treatments to help resolve any issues you are experiencing.

DOES YOUR CUTICLE LOOK CUTE IN THIS? We will look at the porosity of your hair by examining the outer layer of the hair (the cuticle). Whenever the cuticle becomes damaged, it develops small holes in the surface. Even if we add moisture, your hair is unable to retain it, which can leave it feeling dry and may lead to split ends. The hair can also lose its shine, as the surface is damaged and uneven. So how can we analyse the hair properly? If needed, we have specialised cameras, which allow us to see the hair in close detail and assess if there is any damage. Previously, we would use a moisturising shampoo or conditioner to conceal any dry ends but nowadays we can use advanced treatments that actually repair the damage.

A BIT OF A STRETCH! We will also examine the elasticity of your hair. This is determined by the strength of the inside of the hair (the cortex). If our hair loses its elasticity it will stretch and snap off which mostly happens during brushing or styling. We have a number of treatments that will leave the hair feeling much more healthy and less likely to snap.

HAIR TODAY- GONE TOMORROW! Out of all the concerns that we have with our hair, hair loss can be the most stressful. We all lose a certain amount of hair each

day but excessive hair loss can cause our hair to feel thinner and weaker. We may experience excessive hair loss for a whole variety of reasons. In many instances, we can dramatically slow down or even halt hair loss. Your stylist will be able to discuss this with you during your consultation.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE Finally, we will ask you a few questions to help your stylist understand how you currently maintain your hair. We will be able to give you advice on how to develop and improve your hair care routine. It’s a simple but focused consultation, which will hopefully set you up with healthy hair for 2017. Our Hair & Scalp MOT is available as a free service during February and March 2017 when having any cut or colour service in any of our seanhanna salons. You can also download your voucher for a FREE LUXURY CODITIONING TREATMENT worth £15. Just go to www.seanhanna.com.

PROPERTY NEWS SALES LEE O’NEILL Head of sales at Knight Frank Wapping comments on the trends in the residential sales market We’re now firmly in 2017, so I am determined not to mention trigger phrases like ‘2016’s Stamp Duty Land Tax increase’ and the ‘EU referendum’.

I did set out to not mention the election of Donald Trump too, but it seems he loves a headline as much as I love an exchanged contract. January brought several new instructions, and with that we have seen a refreshing amount of new enquiries and agreed a healthy number of sales. This is a good sign; we finished 2016 in a very good position and we’re hopeful that it was a result of hard work and the good advice we had given, not the slice of luck that many agents feel they are due. With new instructions, good offers and agreed sales, I feel confident we have a really good gauge on the market and can continue through 2017 confidently. Towards the end of January, I heard a new phrase that is the heir apparent to last year’s SDLT raise and EU Referendum: ‘The triggering of Article 50.’ I heard whispers that some people were waiting until this triggering was well under way before stepping back into the market, but why? Let us recap. There has not been a credit crunch-esque crash to the housing market. Sure, we have seen adjustments made but there are buyers wanting to buy, they’re making good offers, and sellers are agreeing PHOTOGRAPHY / © adam carter 2016

to sell. A good and knowledgeable agent will advise you the world is changing, whether it’s the EU, Donald Trump’s presidency or currency exchange rates, the list goes on; but what remains is that this is the city of London, and ‘bricks and mortar’ have always been and will remain a sound investment and, more importantly, provide a great home at the same time. So choose your time to enter the market, but do it with a good, experienced agent who has the best tools to aid your property requirements.

The wider UK economy is also likely to be affected by the triggering of Article 50 to commence the UK’s exit from Europe. At the time of writing, a draft Brexit bill is

making its way through parliament following a Supreme Court ruling that an Act of Parliament is required before the government can trigger Article 50. The bill is expected to be approved before the end of March and is therefore unlikely to delay the process of triggering Article 50, but what the full Brexit package will look like still remains unclear. This year has also seen Donald Trump taking on the role as president of the United States and the signing of a number of controversial executive orders, but it will

take time to see how the global economy responds to his presidency. The rest of this year therefore looks set to be another rollercoaster ride, but that’s not to say that the lettings market should be viewed negatively. Last year, it was widely expected that a vote for Brexit or a vote for Donald Trump would be a vote for economic doom and gloom, but what people failed to consider was that for all those who voted for Brexit and Donald Trump, the result was obviously not a negative one and therefore consumer confidence helped the economy grow.
