FROM THE EDITOR

“Summer afternoon – to me, those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” – Henry James

With recent promises of a sublime summer hitting the headlines – “the hottest on record” and “120 days of sunshine” say the tabloids – we’ve thrown ourselves into the summer season here with gusto, and in this month’s pages you’ll find everything you need for a stylish and social summer extravaganza.

Start by planning your season with our essential guide to the key events from May until September – arrive in style at Henley Regatta, dress the part for Wimbledon, bring the best picnic to the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and rub shoulders with royalty at the Epsom Derby. For our go-to guide, see p. 12.

Elsewhere, our style pages are filled with suggestions for the chic man and woman – chaps, rock an orange and navy Rivieria-inspired style this summer (p. 31) and take inspiration from the linen suits and dapper, nonchalant styling of Hardy Amies – whose design director talks exclusively to us on p. 34. Girls, prepare for the sweltering temperatures by dressing all in white – a classic look, just perfect for this sunshiney season (p. 50). If you need to add a little colour to your collection, then this summer’s floral trend will provide plenty of seasonal styles to ensure you look the part at the polo (p. 40). In Canary Wharf, summer is here too. A whole seasonal programme of arts, events, fashion and food are lined up to delight and amuse – get the essentials on p. 21. In Cabot Square, Ibérica La Terraza is finally reopen, heralding the start of leisurely lunchtimes amidst the trickling water fountains and shady trees; Aimee Latimer gets seasonallyinspired on p. 112. Elsewhere, fashion events (p. 52), new openings (p. 54) and style essentials from local favourites ensure you have everything you need for summer, right on your doorstep (p. 38).

THE POLO SEASON 1 May – 30 September

There are several well-attended matches throughout the summer, which form part of the English season. Teams usually compete for a small trophy during the morning of the final day, followed by the real final in the afternoon. Choose from The Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club (20 May – 15 June), the Prince of Wales Trophy at RCBPC (7 June – 14 June), the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park (20 July), the Warwickshire Cup at Cirencester (18 – 22 June) and the Cartier International Cup at Guards Polo Club (25 July). Also proving wildly popular with polo fans is the recent addition of Polo in the Park (6 – 8 June) in Hurlingham Park; the event has attracted spectators from miles around as a modern twist on the traditional game, making the matches fast, furious and terribly exciting.

Thousands of films are screened over 12 days (some tickets available to the public) and the festival highlights are focused on the official selection of 20 films competing to win. Guests also enjoy visits to the Cinéma de la Plage, with performances of film music and showings of Cannes classics, and noncompetition films on Macé beach. D festival-cannes.fr/en

RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 20 – 24 May

The Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship garden show, the Chelsea Flower Show, attracts worldclass and celebrity gardeners, famous and budding garden designers and sellers of every garden accessory imaginable. The show never fails to make headlines around the world, particularly as a favourite of the Royal Family and British A-List (last year, Prince Harry, even designed his own garden to celebrate the show’s centenary). Interestingly, the show is said to attract more FTSE 100 chief executives than any other social event. Highlights for 2014 include an evening of light opera by Opera Holland Park, Tom Prince’s ‘Mind’s Eye’ sight-loss garden, which will use textures, sounds, tastes and smells to stimulate the senses, and the Gucci ‘Flora’ garden – a whimsical composition of flowers, fruits and insects, by award-winning garden designer Sarah Eberle, that will reflect the famous Gucci motif. Today, the Circuit de Monaco, built on the picturesque streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine, is one of the most challenging Formula 1 tracks, with tight turns and changes in elevation. WIMBLEDON TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

ROYAL ASCOT 17 – 21 June

Perhaps one of the oldest traditions in the English season is Royal Ascot, which was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, but it was Edward VII who gave it a real sense of social occasion. Over 26 days of racing at Ascot, the five-day Royal Meeting each June is the most famous. One of the most popular dates is Ladies’ Day (also known as Gold Cup Day), which this year is Thursday 19 June – and this is when the fashion stakes get really high, particularly regarding hats and fascinators. The Royal Procession of four open carriages takes just under 10 minutes to cross the course to the Royal Enclosure, where members of the Royal Family attend at 2pm every day during the Royal Meeting.

EAT: Pre-order online one of the exclusive picnic hampers for two and collect at the Ground on the day. Choose from Jamie Oliver’s Fabulous Hampers or a Tamarind Indian Hamper for total ease. HANG OUT WITH: Sporting fans, corporate groups and friends (it’s a good option for a mixed group).

23 June – 6 July

One of the world’s favourite sporting highlights, Wimbledon is very much a ‘garden party tournament’ – think lush, green grass courts, strawberries and cream, a little bit of rain and a lot of Champagne. The improvements to the newly-roofed Centre Court mean that the whole experience is a little less interrupted by the English weather.

EAT: During Royal Ascot week, picnics are only allowed in the Silver Ring and Heath enclosures; informal picnics are permitted in the car park, which might be one of the most popular choices. Why not have a Top Notch Picnic Box (£99) from littlepicniccompany.co.uk delivered directly to the car park on race day?

D Bookings: wimbledon.org

GET THERE: Park by the common and enjoy a morning stroll in the open air, or walk through leafy Wimbledon Village to stretch your legs before watching the match. DECK YOURSELF OUT IN: Smart-casual in the members’ areas – blazers for men and dresses or skirts for women. Broderie anglaise skirts by Christopher Kane and Collette Dinnigan look pretty this summer, alongside the ever-stylish Paul Smith blue blazers for men. EAT: Bring a picnic hamper from home and stop at Bayley & Sage, a lovely local deli in Wimbledon Village, before heading to the court.

 HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA 2 – 6 July

Think of British summer time and think of Henley Royal Regatta: Champagne, summer dresses, Pimm’s, striped blazers and some serious competition on the water. The UK’s most famous river regatta started life as a carnival in 1839 and evolved into a rowing competition that has become a firm part of the summer social calendar. The most long-standing, and celebrated, race is the Grand Challenge Cup for Men’s Eights, awarded since the regatta’s first year and open to all established, amateur male crews. D Bookings: hrr.co.uk

DECK YOURSELF OUT IN: Formal dress only in the Stewards’ Enclosure (for members or by invitation only); there is no general dress code in the Regatta Enclosure. We love men in a not-so-subtle striped blazer from Kent & Curren and Paul Smith sunglasses. For ladies, opt for a coloUrful summer dress from Sandro paired with elegant, neutral accessories. EAT: Feast on a selection of treats including the finest charcuterie, cheeses, salads, scotch eggs, olives, baguettes, salted caramel brownies and strawberries and cream from Spook Hampers (spookcooking.com) which delivers anywhere you want. As it isn’t an enclosed site, the week is very laidback and most socialising is done in the beer tents and yacht clubs. FEATURE Brigitte Bardot in Spoleto, June 1961

Viva ITALIA

As a new exhibition opens celebrating the golden age of Italian cinema, we look back at an era that epitomised a world of glamour, decadence and the inimitable Euro chic WORDS: JACK WATKINS

MAY 2014 CW 23

ou’d need to be a major league film junkie to be able to reel off the names of many successful Italian actors and directors today, but in the 1950s and 1960s, Rome was a genuine rival to Hollywood. The Via Veneto was the city’s equivalent of the Sunset Strip. Celebrity culture walked hand-in-hand with quality commercial cinema. Not only was the place chock full of home-grown talent, but they were joined by many one-time stars with a washed-up reputation in California, who had decided to see if they could get lucky, one more time, in Europe. And, as Hollywood realised that audiences were developing a taste for glamour European-style, more international-themed films became the rage – as did costume epics of the sword and sandal variety – often shot in Italy and featuring such big names as Audrey Hepburn, Charlton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor and Kirk Douglas, and native ‘exotics’ like Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida. It effectively transformed the streets of the Eternal City into an open-air film set. If there is one film synonymous with this golden period it is La Dolce Vita, directed by the enigmatic Federico Fellini and released in 1960. Even if you have never seen the film – the title literally means ‘sweet life’ – you will surely be familiar with stills and scenes from

it, most of them featuring the voluptuous blonde Anita Ekberg, playing a Hollywood starlet, and catching the eye with her wild dancing and her nocturnal wade into the Trevi Fountain. In fact, the real star of La Dolce Vita is that archetype of the suave Italian man-about-town Marcello Mastroianni. He plays a gossip columnist with unrealised aspirations to be a serious writer, undermined by his hollow pursuit of the high life. He becomes obsessed with Ekberg from the moment he sees her arrival at the local airport, and they embark on a tour of all the high-profile Roman tourist spots, from St Peter’s to the Caracalla Baths. Mastroianni is undergoing a ‘meaning of life’ crisis, however, and after an orgiastic scene in a ruined villa, the film ends with a morning-after-the-night-before beach scene of poignant ambiguity. La Dolce Vita was like an early glimpse of the jet-set lifestyle as the ’60s kicked off, and it certainly evokes an epoch in Italian cinema history, even down to the characterisation of Ekberg’s husband in the film, an alcoholic Hollywood actor on the way down (played by ex-Tarzan Lex Barker, who was married to Ekberg in real life). It’s also the film that gave us the now alltoo-common word paparazzi, derived from a character in the film named Paparazzo, a photographer buzzing

round the streets on his little Vespa, eager to grab an off-guard shot of a young starlet, or prowling round the society haunts to catch a sneak shot of brawling, drunk or disorderly celebrities. The Estorick Collection’s new exhibition focuses on the rich pickings to be had by photographers operating on the scene in Rome at that time. On one side are the kosher snaps of stars at work on the film sets of international productions such as Ben Hur (1959) and Cleopatra (1963), and on the prestige domestic films of talents like Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni and Pier Paolo Pasolini. Then there are the more disreputable, intrusive offerings of the real paparazzi – Ekberg angrily confronting freelance photographers with a bow and arrow in 1961, or Italian leading man Franco Nero aiming a swipe at the paparazzo Rino Barillari at the Trevi Fountain in 1965 (below). The photographer of the real dolce vita, however, whose work features in the show, was Marcello Geppetti. Along with the likes of Barillari, he would have served as one of the models for the character of Paparazzo in the Fellini film. He died in 1998 but left an archive of more than a million images, and it is from these that most of the photos on display are drawn. Geppetti didn’t start out as a camera-toting vulture, however; his early reputation was built on the high

technical quality of his images and his eye for capturing the dramatic moment. But after making a name for himself with some harrowing images of a fire at the Hotel Ambasciatori on the Via Veneto, he soon joined the opportunists on their scooters, in hot pursuit of snaps of the stars. He got pictures of Sophia Loren in the car with her movie-producer husband Carlo Ponti and the great Italian neo-realist director Vittorio De Sica, and one of two immaculately-attired Hollywood greats, Cary Grant and Rock Hudson. There was one of Brigitte Bardot at the height of her press adulation, surrounded by snappers, and later in the decade, one of Raquel Welch dancing on a table, watched by Marcello Mastroianni. One of Geppetti’s most famous shots was of Richard Burton kissing Elizabeth Taylor while they were holidaying in Ischia. This caused a sensation at the time, as the pair were still married to other partners. The photograph has been listed as being among the 30 most famous images in history. Presented alongside Geppetti’s work in the Estorick exhibition is that of Arturo Zavattini, who actually was a cinematographer and assistant director on many films, including for Vittorio De Sica. His father was screenwriter Cesare Zavattini, one of the early theorists of Italian neo-realist cinema, who worked with De Sica on such classics as Bicycle Thieves and Umberto D. As such, Arturo was well-placed to gain the consent of the likes of Fellini to take pictures of the cast and crew during the making of La Dolce Vita, the very film that reflected back on these new notions of celebrity, and the emptiness behind the glamorous facades. Included is a particularly fine portrait shot of Mastroianni pausing for a reflective puff on a cigarette. It’s easy to draw parallels with the present-day obsession with celebrity from some of these images. The manner in which Geppetti’s, and those of other paparazzi, were obtained certainly changed the face of photojournalism forever, breaking down notions of privacy. The sleazy pursuit of easy lira may have lain at the heart of it, but it’s easy to feel nostalgia for these scenes from Hollywood-on-the-Tiber. At the heart of it was a still-thriving commercial industry making intelligent, mass-market films for grown-ups, with truly charismatic stars – a far cry from the infantilised, gimmick-obsessed movie world of today.

La Dolce Vita was like an early glimpse of the jet-set lifestyle as the 60s kicked off, and it certainly evokes an epoch in Italian cinema history

Guide To Grooming

As summer gears up, one question many men nervously tackle is: “What should you wear to a summer wedding? Gant may have the answer, and has showcased some infallible outfit combinations by shooting its menswear Spring / Summer 2014 campaign in the midst of a summer wedding. Groomsmen and guests are kitted out with cotton, double-breasted blazers and fitted club blazers in a palette ranging from navy to white. The collection mixes a dapper look with practical ease of wear: the trousers are semi-tailored in stretch-cotton and the shirts are breathable to carry you comfortably through any overly-long ceremonies. For nonwedding-goers, collegiate creams and navy are punctuated with bursts of yellow, red and indigo to cover all the summer fashion bases. Accessories are also central to the collection, such as textured pocket squares that instantly smarten blazers worn with open shirts and a selection of leather weekend bags that will carry seamlessly into autumn. Made-To-Measure The expense, and point, of having a bespoke suit made is swiftly diminished when you wear it with an ill-fitting shirt. Fortunately, Emmett London has launched a made-to-measure service for its famous shirts across its four London stores, including the one in Canary Wharf. The process, from the first appointment to the finished product, typically takes five weeks and clients wanting a bespoke shirt will need to attend two fittings in London. The fact that Emmett London never makes more than 25 of any shirt means it is on a constant search for new colours, patterns and fabrics. This gives the bespoke customers in particular a huge range of aesthetic choice on top of the shirts’ structural offerings, including a variety of 60 collar shapes, 13 types of cuff and endless buttons to pick from. Tinker, Tailor, Stylist’s eye Mehmet Ali, design director of Savile Row’s Hardy Amies, discusses assuming the helm of an established brand and making it your own Words: Aimee Latimer

Interview | STYLE Hardy Amies S/S14 Collection

f you are vain enough, as I hope you are, to read this book, surely you can be vain enough to want to make yourself less fat,” said Hardy Amies, a man of many words – not all of them gentle – when writing what is, quite literally, the book on style. This was his advice for burley men reading his 1964 style guide ABC of Men’s Fashion, found under ‘F’ for ‘Fat Man’. For the more self-forgiving types who flip forward to ‘S’ for ‘Stout Man’, they are met with the curt: “See ‘Fat Man’, p.106”. When Hardy Amies arrived on Savile Row in the ’40s he was an opinionated designer who helped launch the notion of ready-to-wear clothing for men and became courtier to HM Queen Elizabeth II from her coronation to his retirement. The way he encouraged men to dress to suit their body type and lifestyle struck a chord with a generation trying to break away from the homogenous drudgery of post-war Britain and helped to establish his eponymous brand in style history. With ABC of Men’s Fashion, a style guide that mixes practical style tips with caustic wit in an A – Z format, he honed in on the fact that a well-fitting suit can change the way a man feels. Now at the reins of this weighty legacy is Mehmet Ali, who has served as design director at Hardy Amies for the last three years. Surprisingly young, he’s as articulate as his brand’s founder, minus the acidity. So much so, that he calmly overlooks the flow of men crashing into the lounge we’re talking in, excusing themselves over their shoulders, their pardons captured on the dictaphone. 14 Savile Row, Hardy Amies HQ, is a working

house. It feels partly like a home with its tall ceilings and comfy chairs. However, the reception looks into a room of tailors cutting great sheaths of fabric, men routinely drop by for fittings and Ali’s office is slotted somewhere out the back. “This is everything. It’s a bespoke house and it’s also our design headquarters. It’s where we operate as a business and we now have a showroom just down the road which showcases all of the collections. We’re due to open a retail flagship store in London very soon. It’s exciting.” This environment centres Ali in the midst of his craftsmen, seeing them work and observing the needs of his customers day-to-day. “I think when it comes to the process of developing and changing the fits, or whenever we want to try something new, I am indebted to the knowledge of the people around me. We’re lucky to have some fantastically talented tailors and seamstresses and people who work on bespoke items in the house, so we’ve always had the rapport when developing something for ready-towear and the ease to go down and talk to them.” He pulls forward the lapels of the navy flannel jacket he’s wearing – his typical uniform: “For example, this jacket. We’re now developing it with a soft shoulder, no lining and no shoulder pad. Designing this was as much a conversation with some of the tailors in the house as it was a thought process of how to make it fit beautifully and retain its quality and longevity as a garment. Some of the techniques our tailors use are very time-consuming and expensive, but through that conversation we developed techniques and ideas that can be mass-

produced in a way. And that’s where we got the idea to do parts of our range which are a little more unconstructed and a little more contemporary, because we would be able to achieve them through using some of the techniques bespoke tailors use, but modernising the way we use them.” Ali always had an interest in fashion. After completing a degree in politics and philosophy, he began to spend an increasing amount of time at his tailors: “I just loved the atmosphere of the place and started spending a lot of weekends there. Whether it entailed getting clothes made or adjusted there, whatever it became, I would see jackets and coats being made by hand and pieces put together. And just seeing the craft – the antiquated ability to put these pieces together – I found that really interesting. So that’s when I went away and did the menswear part of my, I suppose, education.” This education was formalised with a MA in Fashion Design and a spell as a menswear designer at Reiss, “doing a bit of everything”. It is this practical education of watching the design process from start to finish that has seemingly fuelled Ali’s two-pronged approach to design: “Shirting, small accessories, bags: that offering needs to be seen in a broad, overarching way, but also in the minute detail. For example, looking for the simple piece that could be missing – an interesting new thing that we haven’t done before. It Both Hardy Amies S/S14 might be a new knitted tie or a new take on the blouson, or it might be putting a colour across a range that really lifts it and feels really relevant for the season.” As suggested, when Hardy Amies’ showcased its Spring / Summer 2014 collection at London Collections: Men (LC:M) the cohesive collection was piqued with eccentricities. It featured a mixture of fabrics, patterns, lapels, soft greys,

bolts of tangerine, double-breasted suits worn on top of knitted jumpers and open blazers with scrunched pocket squares and sunglasses. The line will now present its Spring / Summer 2015 at LC:M this June. Ali may be driving his team to evolve the way they think about making clothes in order to meet the demands of the future, but his vision is still honouring the brand’s past: “The Spring / Summer 2014 collection was really an opportunity to partake in some storytelling and it was one of the first seasons we really delved into the Hardy Amies history books. We found this existing relationship between Amies and the designer Saul Bass, a cinematic, graphic artist I’ve always been a fan of. He did some of the campaigns, such as a Hardy’s aftershave campaign in the 60’s, and he did a lot of work for Stanley Kubrick and lot of other great directors of the day. Some of the artwork he did for films were screen-printed and the colour combinations that came out of those works inspired some of the colour combinations that we used from that presentation.” Looking back, Ali recalls growing up with a copy of ABC of Men’s Fashion long before he arrived at the brand. Speaking about the book, he says: “It actually felt like that was one of the most important things he has left us – especially here at the house. Not really about how relevant the comments are – some are still quite relevant, some less so – but it’s an insight into his character: it’s witty, it’s tongue-incheek and quite harsh in places. More than anything, it lent itself to be brought back to life again in the same way the house has been. He was a pioneer of ready-to-wear menswear.” So, does Ali have any rules that challenge the like of Hardy Amies’ ‘P’ for ‘Pressing’?: (“Everybody knows that trousers have to be kept well-pressed and nearly everyone knows how to do it. If you haven’t been in the services then get a wife and train her.”) “One of my rules is to do with ease and effortless style and that sometimes comes from not trying too hard,” Ali explains. “So it’s not matching things up too much, not caring too much about how things are perfectly put in place. I think there’s a British eccentricity to being a little bit more dishevelled or carefree with style. It’s not so much a rule, but it puts you in good stead.”

Orlebar Brown

Top 5 from oRlebar brown

Summer’s fast-approaching and where better to kit yourself out for days lounging by the poolside than Jubilee Place’s resident swimwear specialist, Orlebar Brown. We talk to founder, Adam Brown, about beach style, bedroom business and Bond

B

ack in March 2007, in a bedroom in East London, one Adam Brown, inspired by a recent holiday and the less-than-inspiring male swimwear on view, launched a revolutionary line of trunks designed not as “a swim short, but more the short you swim in”. Seven years on, Orlebar Brown remains at the top of its game, adding a string of female and non-swim collections to its range. So what’s the secret to OB’s success? Well, for Brown it’s down to the company’s fundamental raison d’être: “many others have historically included swim as part of their collection, but we were the first to really focus a lifestyle collection ‘around’ a swim/poolside story. We keep the tailored swim shorts at the centre of our story, and it has given us a unique angle.” “We are not just another baggy shapeless pair of shorts. Our swim shorts are based on a 17-piece pattern of a man’s pair of trousers, they have side fasteners to adjust, a zip fly, front and back pockets and a tailored fit. This enables our product to be truly versatile and take you from sun lounger to sun-downer. Considered, tailored, colourful; these are our brand values and define everything we do.” Orlebar Brown’s unique design, both practical and aesthetic, is clearly vital to its success but it would seem that Brown’s early career as a photographer has also quite visibly infiltrated into the brand, from its products to its campaigns. While Brown – whose name, and that of a former business partner, act as the basis for the brand –

remains modest about his photographic abilities, he admits that he has “always had clear ideas on composition, colour, scale and message. “I suppose the part of the OB journey I have really enjoyed is creating a narrative around a product. We have definitely used photography on both product and through marketing to facilitate this.” But, as with any great creative, photography is just one aspect of the brand’s style. Since 2009, OB has been famed for its range of distinctive collaborations, named OB Editions, and has this year teamed up with tattoo artist to the stars, Saira Hunjan, and late Japanese designer, Yuko Hagiwara. Brown admits: “We spend a lot of time researching artists and potential partners for our OB Editions as I think this is such an integral way to bring the brand to life. It gives the product a story and the customer an understanding of who we are and what we like outside of great colours. Art, photography, illustration and graphics all play a vital part of this narrative.” Going on to reveal that OB is bang on-trend this summer with its jungle-inspired range, Brown explains how “flora, fauna, exotic animals and birds of paradise in vibrant colours all take centre stage. Moving from photography to illustration just slightly this season sees the launch of designs with the fabulously eccentric Greek artist Konstantin Kakanis.” See the results for yourself in Orlebar Brown’s Jubilee Place store.

legant, simple, chic: think of French style and these are just a few of the words that spring to mind. Think of your typical French fashion designer, however, and a Moroccan-born law graduate may not be the image that immediately springs to mind; yet Evelyne Chétrite, founder of internationally-acclaimed fashion line Sandro, isn’t your ordinary designer. Having launched the brand in 1984 – shortly after marrying her husband, Didier Chétrite, at the age of 19 – Chétrite was determined to meet the demand for a clothing line that filled the gap between high-street and

high-end French fashion. Over the past two decades, Sandro has done exactly that, becoming a front runner in the industry and laying claim to a wealth of admirers, from Pippa Middleton to Alexa Chung. Now a global representative and revolutionary of French fashion, Chétrite certainly has come a long way; no surprise, perhaps, when you consider her creative eye and effortless flair are somewhat au naturel. Sandro was established on family foundations and fashion, it seems, runs in her blood. During the company’s early years, Chétrite was joined by her younger sister, Judith, who later went on to launch the Parisian fashion line Maje. These days, Chétrite’s eldest son, Ilan, works alongside her in the company and was responsible for creating the brand’s menswear range in 2008. Yet, despite its growth, Sandro’s ethos has remained the same, appealing to astute and pragmatic buyers who are looking for quality above all else. For Chétrite: “Sandro is all about making women feel confident and beautiful. Our brand brings a modern twist to feminine outfits with a high sense of detail.” Last month, Sandro became the newest arrival to Canary Wharf’s shopping scene, promising its “collections will bring a new Parisian touch to the British working girl’s wardrobe” and “a new way to express their femininity with all the refinement they need.” Jubilee Place’s latest opening marks Sandro’s fourteenth London outlet. Joining the likes of Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Harrods, it bolsters the brand’s already 406-store-strong empire. With a commitment to feminine French tailoring and simple yet flattering lines, Sandro makes a welcome arrival to Canary Wharf and provides the perfect enticement to revamp your summer wardrobe. No Smoke without Flowers “There always has to be a story behind it,” explains Tessa Packard. Indeed, no one could doubt the conceptual element behind the jewellery designer’s latest collection, No Smoke without Flowers, which was inspired by the 19th century opium dens of the Chinese Qing dynasty. It follows on from Packard’s debut 2013 collection, Mexicana, which draws upon her love of architecture and the LatinAmerican country’s ancient temples. The new selection of floral pieces pays tribute to the female courtesans, or ‘flowers’, who worked in the opium dens while being courted by the male clientele. The collection also features strong, geometric pieces with brightly coloured gemstones and one of our personal favourites is the Madam Pistil ring set with square-cut amethysts, garnets and black sapphires.

Coming Up Roses To celebrate the newly expanded Piaget boutique, this month sees Harrods’ Fine Jewellery Room play host to an exclusive preview of six neverbefore-seen white gold and diamond pieces from the jewellery house’s Rose Passion collection, launched in January. Cutting Edge Lydia Courteille’s whimsical and surreal creations never fail to charm and amuse us, as shown by the Parisian jeweller’s latest high jewellery collection, Animal Farm:

Taking inspiration from British novelist George Orwell’s classic novel, Courteille’s Animal Farm similarly plays on the political allegory of animals dreaming for equality and features a farmyard full of familiar faces set in rings, including a crown-wearing cow, a golden goat and a diamond-encrusted pig. The collection is made up of 12 rings, with matching earrings in the pipeline for later this spring

FOUR’S A CHARM This May, the Links of London store in Canary Wharf’s Jubilee Place will be launching new additions to its coveted collection of charms in time for the summer season. Set in 18-karat gold and diamond pavé, this is the first time the jewellery and watch brand has introduced its sought-after charms in these two luxury materials and customers will be able to choose from four new designs, including Pine cone, Disc, Turtle and Bird. Baselworld

2014

Each spring, Basel hosts the world’s largest watch and jewellery extravaganza, an event that sees 1,500 exhibitors showcase their wares to more than 150,000 international visitors. Here are the pieces which most caught our eye during the eight day bonanza WORDS: OLIVIA SHARPE & RICHARD BROWN

Basel stands were awash with colour this year as jewellery houses showed off their stunning collections of coloured diamonds and gemstones, proving how size is no longer the only thing that matters when it comes to stones. Graff demonstrated why it is famous for being the supplier of the largest and rarest Natural Yellow diamonds with a magnificent yellow and white diamond Fringe necklace. When it came to gemstones, brands experimented with various colour combinations. Like purple, Pantone’s ‘colour of the year 2014’, green pervaded the Halls of Baselworld. Chopard presented two new pairs of earrings as part of its Green Carpet Collection, the first composed of diamond briolettes and emeralds, and the second of amethysts and diamonds. At Sutra Jewels, the Texan company mesmerised visitors with its vivid display of Paraiba tourmalines. Finally, never one to do things by half measures, Stephen Webster presented his magnificent Magnipheasant collection featuring a rainbow of coloured gemstones, including citrines, amethysts, red garnets, blue topaz and peridots.

Sweet Sundae While the brightly coloured diamonds and gemstones on display certainly packed a punch, the politely pretty pastel pieces which made their debut at Basel were by no means outdone. Pascale Bruni’s reimagined signature Bon Ton collection in rose and milky quartz was well-received, as were Wendy Yue’s feminine and romantic candy coloured designs. This Madame Butterfly necklace is inspired by the 1898 short story turned opera and is a medley of purple sapphires, rhodolite garnets, pink sapphires, opals, tsavorites and brown diamonds.

Clockwise from top: Madame Butterfly necklace, POA, Wendy Yue; 18-karat rose gold earrings with pink opal and diamonds, $20,000, Sutra Jewels; Delicati rose-cut cushion amethyst and diamond pendant, £705, Marco Bicego; Bon Ton rings in pink gold, milky quartz, smoky quartz, pink quartz and white diamonds, from £2,000, Pascale Bruni

Show-Stopper It was Graff’s first year at Baselworld and the international jeweller certainly made it count. Arguably the most talked-about timepiece of the entire fair, the unveiling of the Hallucination watch not only caused an immediate Twitter sensation but broke the record of the most valuable watch ever created, priced at $55million. The masterpiece features a phantasmagoria of more than 100 carats of rare fancy coloured diamonds and for Chairman Laurence Graff, it has made his “diamond dream a reality”. For many of us without £33million as pocket change, however, owning it shall remain a fantasy.

The Rites of Spring

A Stitch in Time

Taking a leaf out of the fashion industry’s book, florals were once again a key trend at this year’s fair. Due mention must firstly be given to Chanel, which presented its latest line of Mademoiselle Privé timepieces. Inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s favourite flower, the Gold Camellia motif is engraved and polished by hand and features a matte black dial set with five brilliant-cut diamonds and five navette-cut yellow sapphires, while the new ‘Maki-e dial’ is the result of a partnership with Japan-based artists and employs the ancient skill of lacquering dating back to 794 AD. Continuing to look east, Wendy Yue’s much-anticipated new collection did not disappoint. The Tears of the Forbidden Fruit necklace presents a melancholy depiction of the Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil. Italian jeweller Roberto Coin similarly paid homage to nature with his Garden collection rings.

Spanish jeweller Carrera y Carrera’s latest collection, Seda Imperial, is based on an Eastern legend said to have occurred 46 centuries ago and tells the story of a Chinese princess named Liu-Tsu who was forced to marry a barbaric Khan. In revenge, she hid in her shawl the secret of Imperial Silk embroidery and threw it into the ocean. This compelling tale has been reimagined in a series of fine jewellery pieces. Emperatriz is inspired by the shawl’s floral patterns and features a variety of flowers, from the English rose to cherry blossom (reminiscent of China), to illustrate the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. In Sierpes (named after one of Seville’s most iconic streets), delicate lattices imitate the shawl’s silk fringing, while the translucency of the chalcedony (sourced from Brazil) and moonstones creates a crystal ball effect. Garzas, meaning heron, was another typical decorative element and one of the pieces presents two of the birds linked together in an embrace. Finally, Orquideas or ‘orchid’ – a symbol of status in the 19th century – is represented in ruby, yellow gold and diamond pieces.

Time to Shine 2014 marked an impressive year for women’s jewellery watches. There was a collective intake of breath at the Boucheron stand when it unveiled its pièce de résistance; the Cristal de Lune watch. Setting our aspirational sights to new heights, the threedimensional timepiece has been classified as ‘a masterpiece in 3D watch-making’. Chanel may be a relative stripling in comparison to some of Basel’s centuries-old watchmakers but it is by no means inferior; this year saw the release of its first high jewellery J12 Flying Tourbillon. The movement is the result of an exclusive collaboration between Chanel and Renaud & Papi and has been adapted from the Premiere Flying Tourbillon for a round J12 dial. Springtime was reflected in the dials of Dior’s new Plissé Soleil models (part of the Dior VIII Grand Bal collection), while Harry Winston and Bulgari dazzled viewers with their diamond-encrusted timepieces.

COLLECTION

Pearls of Wisdom Pearls in all shapes, sizes and lustres reigned supreme. After setting the bar extremely high last year with its 120th anniversary collection, all eyes were on Mikimoto to see whether the ruler of the pearl industry could live up to its high standards and it certainly did. The ethereal Sun & Clouds necklace got visitors talking with its seamless three-colour graduation (the yellow diamonds placed around each pearl reflect the glowing sun, while the white and grey pearls represent the darkening clouds as they move further away) but for us, the heavenly Angelic creation was the star. The chain of pearls and diamonds designed to adorn the body include a countless number of flawlessly round and lustrously large Akoya cultured pearls. Over in Hall 2, Rocks god Stephen Webster created a considerable amount of noise with his David Bowie-inspired Lady Stardust collection which celebrates the famous lightning bolt motif. The designer’s Lady Stardust ring brought a modern twist to the traditional mineral with the large South Sea pearl embedded within a geometric, v-shaped pattern set in white diamond pavé.

Carrera y Carrera wasn’t the only brand to delve into its the past for inspiration. For Garrard’s latest collection, Albemarle (named after the London flagship store’s location) the royal jeweller based it on the tiara of ‘the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’, commissioned in 1893 at Garrard by the ladies-in-waiting of Princes Victoria Mary of Teck. The tiara has since become one of the most familiar of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s, also appearing on English and Commonwealth banknotes and coinage. Its intricate ‘diamond and dot’ design can be noted throughout the collection, which has been split into two: Albemarle London (fine jewellery) and Albemarle Heritage (high jewellery). Garrard has also released new, one-of-kind high jewellery tiaras. The beautiful Fringe white diamond and white gold tiara can be adjusted by hand to form a necklace, while the Timeless tiara can be taken apart to form a pair of earrings.

Symphonic Seduction

From top: Hublot’s Cathedral Tourbillon Minute Repeater; Ulysee Nardin’s Imperial Blue

In complication terms, it’s the holy grail of watchmaking; the pièce de résistance in any watchmaker’s arsenal; proof that a brand has mastered the most complex of horological pursuits. All hail the revered minute repeater. Originally designed as a way of telling the time in the dark – examples chime the hours, quarter-hours and minutes of the day – minute repeaters are the most complicated of all watch complications, requiring between 200 and 300 hours, and decades of experience, to put a single one together (and that’s according to Patek Phillipe). As such, they’re impossible to mass produce and constitute the halo pieces in a brand’s portfolio. Which is why it’s worth shining a light on two beauties debuted at Basel. It may have launched watches with every sports star under the sun, but Hublot’s Cathedral Tourbillon Minute Repeater (£191,700 in titanium / £216,700 in ‘King gold’) is only the second watch from the brand to physically sound the minutes of the day. Housed in a 45mm case, the watch’s hand-winding calibre incorporates a tourbillon escapement and comprises 319 components. Equally hypnotic was Ulysee Nardin’s Imperial Blue. While you might not be the biggest fan of the brand’s brasher creations, it’s impossible not to be impressed by the intricacy and elegance of this minute repeater. With a flying tourbillon ‘floating’ on a transparent mainplate, the watch is a thing of jaw-dropping good looks, even before its silver hammers dance into action to produce an enchanting symphony. It costs £510,000. Revisit the first paragraph for as to why.

A Pilot of Epic Proportions In 2012, Zenith went big; the newly launched Montre D’Aéronef Type 20 came with a preposterous 57.5mm case. Two years later, the company has gone even bigger. Flying in the face of the pragmatic, the Pilot Type 20 Grand Feu measures a monstrous 60mm. Too big for mortal wrists? Then again, this is a watch dedicated to the fantastic rather than the practical. The timepiece’s white-gold crown, bezel and lugs are adorned with an ornate, hand-engraved, garland pattern, while its beautiful white dial is made from Grand Feu enamel. Arabic numerals, blued-hands, a power-reserve indicator and subsidiary seconds register complete proceedings. Ten of the giant pieces will be made. Expect each to cost £108,400. COLLECTION

Defying Gravity Invented by Breguet, who patented it in 1801, the tourbillon aims to improve a watch’s reliability by countering the effects of gravity. It does so by placing a watch’s escapement and balance wheel (it’s most important timekeeping elements) inside a rotating cage, therefore negating the effects of gravity when a timepiece is left in a fixed position, such as on your bedside table. It is one of the most prized, and difficult to master, components in mechanical watchmaking – commanding a suitably-high price point to boot. So which tourbillons stole the show at Basel? Harry Winston’s Histoire de Tourbillon 5 (POA) was one example. Having been brought into the fold of the Swatch Group less than a year ago, you’d forgive the brand for taking the time to settle themselves under the new boss. Not so. HW has spent the last 10 months perfecting the latest creation in its Historie de Tourbillon line, which, this year, for the first time, laid bare the exceptional mechanism behind its movement. Presenting different levels of components inside an 18-karat red gold case, the piece was a threedimensional tribute to its namesake.

Elsewhere, Bulgari gave the world the thinnest tourbillon it had ever seen, a feat it achieved, in part, by using ball bearings, rather than jewels, for many of the Octo Finissimo’s (£18,000) moving parts. With a mind-blowing movement that’s just 1.95 mm thick, the watch’s case measures a mere 5mm. The prize for Baselworld’s best looking tourbillon, however, surely had to go to the platinum version of Breguet’s Classique Tourbillon Extra-Thin Automatic (£108,000). Classic in name; not in nature. Inside, you’ll find a silicon balance spring and an escapement made of anti-magnetic steel. The movement itself is only 3mm in height, making this the world’s thinnest automatic tourbillon.

From top: Breguet’s Classique Tourbillon Extra-Thin Automatic; Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo

A Welcome Return Omega went old school this year with the De Ville Trésor, a sleek and silky reinvention of a 1949 classic. Boasting a silvery opaline dial with a ‘clous de Paris’ pattern – that’s honeycomb to you and I – the Trésor revisits a line that was distinguished by its thin and classic gold cases. In homage, the 2014 models are smooth, slender pieces that sit 40mm in size. They are available in rose or white gold for £8,730 and £9,490 respectively. Most notable of all, however, is the fact that the pieces are powered by Omega’s newest manual-winding movement, the red-gold-balance-bridge-sporting Master CoAxial calibre 8511. Who said beauty’s only skin deep? D omegawatches.com

Stopwatch Show-Stoppers While they’re seldom used to time race cars, horses or space shuttles anymore (examples were sent up with Apollo 13), chronographs still provide a sense of interaction and fun between wearer and watch – whether you’re using one to boil an egg or simply passing the time in a queue. Notable examples launched this year included Breilting’s new Chronomat Airbornes (£6,760) and Patek Philippe’s Annual Calendar Chronograph 5960/1A (£36,920). The four varieties of the vintageinspired Breitlings mark the 30th anniversary of the masculine aviation collection and come with either a 41mm or 44mm diameter. The stainless steel 5960/1A Patek – complete with red accents on its dial – was a seductive exception to the brand’s usual rule of only producing men’s watches in platinum or gold. Expect them to become collectors items almost immediately. For all-out handsomeness, Glashütte Original’s Senator Chronograph Panorama Date has to be one of the prettiest watches of the last few years. The timepiece is powered by the company’s new Calibre 37-01, the first to be conceived and built specifically as a chronograph movement. Among the exquisite mechanical features on view, thanks to a sapphire crystal case back, are the rotor and chronograph bridges mounted on Glashütte’s three-quarter plate; Glashütte’s stripe finish on the automatic bridge; blued-screws and a central skeletonised 21-karat gold rotor complete with double-G logo. Exquisite.

Rolex Refined While this year heralded the return of the famous blue and red ‘Pepsi’ bezel on the GMT-Master II, it also marked the launch of three new Cellini models – gorgeous dress watches that prove Rolex is as adept at producing pieces for the boardroom as it is for the deep blue sea. All three models feature a self-winding movement, a 39mm case and are available only with a shiny black or brown alligator leather strap. The Cellini Date (£11,900) boasts a date function via a hand on a small sub dial, while the Cellini Dual Time (£12,900) features an elegant sun and moon day/night indicator and will show the time in two time zones. Most handsome of all, was the collection’s most understated member, the Cellini Time (£10,150); a pared-back lesson in good taste. D rolex.com

Wonders from the Women’s World Depicting the daily dance between the sun and the moon, Breguet’s Reine de Naples Jour/ Nuit 8999 Haute Joaillerie (below) shone, sparkled and stunned. As did Patek’s fine-looking, diamond-sporting Calatrava Haute Joaillerie Ref. 4895R. However, with each priced not in the tens but hundreds of thousands of pounds, neither fell within the realm of what you’d call ‘reality’ watches. Zenith and Hermès provided the most exciting women’s watches from a price point you might actually be able to afford. At £5,600, Zenith’s Star Open Steel caters for ladies who appreciate mechanical watchmaking – the piece is powered by the brand’s industry-leading El Primero movement – but for whom ‘ladies’ and ‘watches’ doesn’t automatically marry up to mean sparkling dials and bejewelled bezels – the model is the first Open Star to feature no diamonds at all, and all the better for it. Hermès’ updated Cape Cod collection (from £2,300) now comes with a redesigned dial and interchangeable straps. While they may possess a quartz movement, the cases of the new Tonneau and Nantucket models incorporate a special silver alloy that preserves the way the metal glows. They are available non-set or gem-set with 52 diamonds and come with a choice of 14 colours of strap – for its name alone, you’d have to choose the ‘raspberry mysore goat’, surely?

Good Things Come in Threes Jauqet Droz impressed both in terms of technical novelty – its mesmerising Signing Machine is a mechanical, manually-wound cam-device that will duplicate its owner’s signature – and for sheer artistic beauty; it debuted three products dedicated to the art of paillonné enamelling – the process by which azure and gold are married under flame. The dials of each of the three pieces – the 39mm Petite Heure Minute, a 50mm pocket watch and the recently added 43mm Grande Seconde – is decorated with minuscule, floral-inspired gold foil (or paillons) baked onto its enamel. Harrods’ History Lesson

Tudor’s UK Launch Tudor lovers rejoice! No longer will you have to catch a plane to procure one of the company’s timepieces. Having been unavailable in the UK since its relaunch in 2009, the Rolex-owned marque will be available in Blighty from September. Set up by Rolex-founder Hans Wilsdorf in 1946, the premise of the brand was to offer Rolex quality at more modest prices. To that end, Tudor watches still retain the signature looks of their more celebrated siblings, if not the same movements inside (most are powered by calibres produced by ETA – the firm that makes movements for the Swatch Group). Laser Light BMW has made history by becoming the first manufacturer to introduce laser light technology in a production vehicle. The innovative new lighting technology promises to double the illumination strength of traditional lighting, ensuring a high-beam range of up to 600 metres. The laser light will also increase energy efficiency by 30 per cent compared with even the most power-saving conventional LEDs; and, being a tenth of their size, the lasers save on weight and space inside the headlamps. By emitting a bright, white light perceived as being similar to daylight, the lasers can provide better visibility and enhanced road safety when driving in the dark. The BMW i8, which will be released this autumn, will be the first production vehicle to incorporate the optional laser light feature, with plans to equip further models in the future. D bmw.co.uk

ime to ’fess up. I wasn’t expecting too much from this drive… The usual recipe behind an Audi ‘S’ car is to take the standard offering and ruin the ride by lowering the suspension and increasing the size of the wheels and tyres. Then it’s time to breathe on the engine to make it faster, but more highly-strung, before turning to the body and bedecking it with go-faster spoilers that shout ‘Look at me, I’m speeding’. And when you then take into consideration that this Audi S3 is based on the worthy-but-dull A3 saloon and, well, I’d already written my less-than-impressed report in my head. Big mistake. This is the most usable, most fun Audi ‘S’ car I’ve driven. It’s indecently fast but sober-looking, grips tenaciously and – a real surprise this – it rides well. Best of all is its size: the S3 is the epitome of wieldy. The trouble with cars today is that they keep getting bigger, but our country lanes resolutely remain the same size. It’s no longer a case of hustling a performance car down an interesting back road, but squeezing it through while hoping you won’t meet anything coming the other way. The S3, on the other hand, is so gloriously compact that you are almost wearing it: the car simply wraps itself round you, meaning it can be placed on the road with confidence and accuracy.

And that’s despite the saloon being slightly bigger and more practical than the S3 hatchback – the extra length is in the wheelbase, which translates directly into extra legroom in the rear, while the separate boot is actually larger than the hatchback’s. There might be only a 2.0-litre engine under the bonnet, but it’s turbo-charged and breathed upon to deliver 300 hp. That’s considerably more than a Porsche Boxster, for example. Even better is the torque, the engine’s pulling power. It boasts a prodigious 380Nm, which is available over most, the engine’s rev range. In practice, that means the engine is unbelievably flexible with formidable and near-instant overtaking punch available on demand. Makes a great noise, too. This progress is made all the more impressive by the (optional) S-tronic gearbox, a six-speed dual clutch automatic that snaps through gear changes in milliseconds, masking any potential turbo lag. If you fancy a bit of DIY, there are steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, but in reality the ‘box is so good that after a while you just let the car sort things out by itself. Thanks to standard launch control, the result is a 0-60 mph time of fewer than 4.9 seconds and a (governed) top speed of 155 mph. This is supercar territory, yet it’s dead easy to drive rapidly and well. The Audi has another trick up its sleeve, though. The S3 has quattro four-wheel drive as standard, so while the car might not be quite as involving in the dry as a rear-drive BMW M135i, say, its traction and levels of grip in tricky weather conditions mean the Audi is by far the more sure-footed. And that brings us to the ride comfort. Past experience has led me to expect that the S3 would be the dentist’s best friend, thanks to the tooth-rattling ride. Wrong. So wrong. To be fair, the omens weren’t good. The S3’s suspension has been lowered by 25mm so it’s firm, and it rides on 19-inch alloy wheels (don’t bother to go to 20-inchers). But the key ingredient is Audi’s magnetic ride, which uses adaptive damping that automatically stiffens the harder you go… but which means that softer springing can be used to give a more compliant ride. All the same,

Review | MOTORING

keep the setting in either Comfort or Auto, rather than Sport if you don’t want any more fillings. So far, then, this has all the ingredients for a pretty fine machine: prodigious usable power, a compliant ride and superb grip and traction. The brakes are exceptional, too, though the steering is a little anaesthetised for keen drivers… but that’s as much a by-product of the standard four-wheel drive system as anything else. Inside you benefit from Audi’s legendary build quality and, for once, it is not terminally black: choose the Parade Red design package and as well as black nappa leather seats with contrasting red stitching, the upper shoulder sections and door trim inserts are covered in red velvet: it looks rather better than it sounds! But whether you should choose red as an exterior colour is another matter. The test car was finished in a bold Misano Red shade that accentuated the subtle body enhancements – rear lip spoiler, angular sills and redesigned rear bumper – perfectly.

At the same time, though, bright red shouts too much. Driving a car with this performance potential means a less obvious colour would be a more sensible option. Downsides? Well, as usual with an Audi, there’s plenty of opportunity to inflate the price by ticking too many boxes on the options list. ‘My’ car was listed at almost £35,000, but by the time such goodies as a reversing camera, drive assistance package, panoramic glass sunroof and ‘Super Sports’ seats had been added, the bill had gone up to nearly £44,000. That’s a hefty price for a ‘humble’ 2.0-litre, four-door saloon, but it remains a compelling proposition. The combination of Porsche-like performance and serious cross-country ability, thanks to its four-wheel drive chassis and compact dimensions allied to handsome but far from flamboyant looks, add up to a car that deserves serious attention. The Audi S3 saloon is a real Q-car, a wolf in sheep’s clothing… and an object lesson in why it’s never a good idea to make pre-judgements.

BMW’s new 4-series convertible gets the ‘M’ treatment

O

nce upon a time, BMWs were usually odd… numerically, that is. The range started with the 1-series, then jumped to the 3, which was followed by the 5. Top of the range was the 7 with the only interloper being the 6-series coupé. Today, BMW has got even by creating the 2- and 4-series ranges as homes for the coupé and convertible versions of the 1- and 3-series respectively. The latest to join the fray is the performanceoriented M4 convertible, due to arrive in showrooms in September. Sticking with a folding metal hard-top rather than a rag-top for its convertible, the M4 convertible is powered by a 3.0-litre, twin turbocharged straight six-cylinder engine that develops a healthy 431 hp… enough for a 4.6 secs time for the 0-62 mph dash, though the top speed is, as ever, governed to 155 mph.

That folding roof takes just 20 seconds to lower or raise and, though it steals 150 litres of boot space when tucked away (370 litres reduces to 220 litres), it’s still roomier than the old M3 convertible. Looks apart, the biggest difference between M3 and M4 convertibles is that the newer car is considerably lighter, thanks to extensive use of aluminium on the bonnet, front wings and many chassis components, while the prop shaft is carbon-fibre reinforced plastic and is 40 per cent lighter than the steel shaft used previously. In addition to Adaptive M suspension and 19-inch alloy wheels, standard equipment will include the BMW Professional media package, upgraded Bluetooth and USB, front and rear park distance control, folding door mirrors and heated front seats. On the road prices will start at £60,730.

CANARY WHARF’S FIRST RESIDENTIAL TOWER

Canary Wharf Group (CWG) has approved plans for the first residential building on the Canary Wharf Estate. Called Newfoundland, the development is expected to start construction this summer and is scheduled for completion in 2018. The application will now be referred to the Mayor of London for final approval and is subject to completion of legal agreements. The Newfoundland site will consist of 566 suites and one to three-bedroom apartments as well as featuring a health club spa and retail space. In addition to the main site, CWG will be providing approximately 280 affordable off-site housing units at Lovegrove Walk, Barchester Street and Burdett Road. The development reflects CWG’s diverse portfolio; both in the types of building it is constructing and geographically, as it moves beyond Canary Wharf and into the City, with joint ventures at 20 Fenchurch Street and the Shell Centre.

NEWS Canary Wharf Crossrail receives a RoSPA GOLD Award Canary Wharf Contractors Limited, the team behind the Crossrail station at Canary Wharf, has been awarded a gold award for Occupational Health and Safety by RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Protection of Accidents). A representative from the team will attend the 2014 RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards presentation ceremony to receive the accolade at a gala evening at ExCeL London on 17 June. In 2015, three years before the new Crossrail line begins operating, a new four-storey retail and leisure destination above the station will open and will be home to an Everyman cinema, Sports Bar & Grill and Mexican restaurant Poncho 8 plus many more. A landscaped garden will sit on top of the building together with a semi-open plan balcony for waterside dining.

Passover Comes to Canary Wharf To celebrate the Jewish festival of Pesach, Canary Wharf Group hosted a buffet lunch on Thursday 17 April. In its third consecutive year of celebration at Canary Wharf, the happy occasion took place on the gallery level of East Wintergarden, where traditional food and matzah were served to community groups from the surrounding area. Around 40 people attended the lunch, alongside employees who work around the estate, to join together to eat, drink and revel in the celebration of this historic festival. Lunch was followed by Mincha prayers. Passover, also known as Pesach, began this year on Monday 14 April and ran until Tuesday 22 April. It celebrates the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, as they were led to safety across the Red Sea by Moses. Accordingly, the occasion is a time to remember this momentous triumph. The occasion was enjoyed by all and was a testament to Canary Wharf Group’s continued engagement with the Jewish community, as well as those of many different faiths.

Canary Wharf Group Participates in Earth Hour 2014 This March, Canary Wharf Group plc joined millions across the globe in marking Earth Hour by switching off all non-essential lights around the estate for an hour. Many businesses at Canary Wharf also participated including KPMG, Clifford Chance and Morgan Stanley. The hour-long, annual blackout (this year from 8:30pm and 9:30pm on 29 March) aimed to raise awareness of climate change and to encourage energy conservation amongst all those that take part across the world. Each year, Canary Wharf Group participates in Earth Hour and the event is an important part of its ongoing commitment to the environment and corporate responsibility. The Group has indeed demonstrated a steadfast commitment to improving its sustainability performance in recent years. According to the Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines, the Group achieved a GRI level B+ standard, aligned with the EPRA Best Practices Recommendations on Sustainability Reporting, an accolade which recognises the focused efforts of the corporation to tackle climate change in a pragmatic and focused way.

business digest Microsoft Cloud: The next big thing, or full of hot air? More than 100 CEOs and MDs from London’s SME scene attended The Modern Office event at the Emirates Stadium in January. The debut event by Cloud partners Cloudamour and Program Framework showcased the way Microsoft Cloud software could transform companies. Mitchell Feldman, CEO of Cloudamour, spoke to Canary Wharf about how Cloud software is set to change big businesses:

Benefits: “With Cloud, big companies can basically rent ‘super-computer’ power without the need to invest in hardware: one of this year’s business megatrends is ‘big data’ and data analytics.”

Competitive advantages:

“Mobility is the simple answer. Businesses of all sizes are no longer restricted by their location to perform their day-to-day jobs because they’ll now have secure access to corporate information from any device.”

Problem-solving: “No longer do businesses need to take responsibility for critical matters such as backups or security. These services are delivered to the business as standard with most Cloud providers, meaning businesses can focus on their core business and never fall foul of assuming a third party is managing their solution.”

Candy Crusher JP Morgan, Credit Suisse and Bank of America Merrill Lynch were the lead underwriters for British game developer King’s debut on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares in King, a company famous for creating 2013’s most popular app Candy Crush Saga, were priced at $22.50 before the float. The shares quickly slumped by 15.6 per cent on the first day of trading, sparking fears that King could be a one-hit wonder. Candy Crush Saga, one of the 180 games produced by King, was accountable for three-quarters of the company’s revenue in the last three months of 2013. D king.com

EMERGING ECONOMIES:

THE MINT SERIES In a four-part series, we examine the rise of the MINT nations, their booming economies and what’s to come in 2014. Third up: N is for NIGERIA WORDS: josephine o’donoghue

I

f you have even the most general interest in world economics, you’ll probably recognise the term BRIC, coined by economist Jim O’Neill 13 years ago to describe the collective nations of Brazil, Russia, India and China as emerging economic players of the ‘noughties’. Updated for 2014, O’Neill’s most recent term is ‘MINT’ – predicting that Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey, will top the tables as the next rising stars of economic development and growth. In a nutshell, these four nations are predicted to experience economic booms based on their fast-growing populations and large, young workforces who are keen to be educated and work. The BRIC nations and other countries who have led the economic markets for the last decade (India and China, for example) could soon suffer economically with both ageing and shrinking population, creating slower growth rates overall.

In comparison, Nigeria, for example, is predicted to have more people than the USA by 2050 – which would make it one of the world’s most useful populations. In terms of growth (according to Nigeria National Bureau of Statistics estimates), Nigeria’s GDP increased 7.67 per cent year-on-year in the last quarter of 2013, which is higher than the revised figure of 6.81 and 6.99 per cent recorded in the third quarter and the corresponding period of 2012, respectively; an increase that has been building for around a decade. Broadly speaking, if O’Neill’s principle is correct, these four MINT nations could experience the same double-digit growth rates seen in China in the midnoughties if their current economic status, population demographic, geography and resources are wellmanaged. And that could change the face of economic development in Africa forever.

O

ut of the four MINT nations, Jim O’Neill suggests that Nigeria is the most exciting prospect for economic growth. “The place is complete madness, of course, and one can’t be 100 per cent sure,” he says, “but after India, it’s the best in the world in terms of useful population. If you get those young people in productive jobs, that place will arguably be the most exciting country in the world in the next 30 years. “Linked to that, there are so many creative entrepreneurs there and, interestingly, so many educated Nigerians returning from the US because they smell this opportunity to be the next big thing.” Certainly, education is one of the biggest driving factors behind Nigeria’s potential economic surge. Population and demographics alone are not enough to ensure successful growth – for the young working population to be productive, they need to be educated; this much is true for all of the MINT nations. As O’Neill mentions, Nigeria is experiencing a recent influx of ‘home-comers’ – those who have travelled overseas for higher education but recognise the potential of their home cities. “The continent is poised for unprecedented growth and, all over the world, young African professionals are heeding the call of the motherland and returning to lend their expertise,” writes Chibundu Onuzo for The Guardian. “From founding start-ups to working in established

companies; from oil and gas to film distribution; from government appointments to niche privatesector roles, the African marketplace is thronging with Africans who have lived and trained abroad.” In addition, Nigeria’s higher education is – slowly – catching up with the West. Whilst poor secondary school education is recognised as one of the biggest stumbling blocks between Nigeria and economic success, there have been some improvements in education around the larger cities, which for those young people is finally coming to fruition. “I attended a reading in Lagos where the audience was comprised If you want an idea chiefly of Nigerian students and of what Nigeria can offer the graduates,” recalls Onuzo. world’s more fearless investors, “Their questions showed great raise a glass to South African erudition; their contributions supermarket chain Shoprite. Last were abreast of contemporary year, its seven Nigerian branches discourse and the breadth of sold more Moët & Chandon literary knowledge on display champagne than its 600 South put my own paltry store to African stores combined. shame.” In addition, according Source: The Guardian to data from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, the number of Nigerian students at overseas institutions of education grew 71 per cent between 2007 and 2010. Of course, alongside the large, young population that Nigeria has to offer, the nation has also been ‘blessed’ with land rich in natural resources. “Nigeria is naturally blessed by God with abundant arable land – no snow, no extreme heat, no hurricanes, no tsunamis, and no earthquakes – and sundry mineral resources like gold, gas, oil, copper, salt, tin and bitumen among others,” says Tim Akano, CEO of IT company New Horizons. “I always say that there are no more than two countries in the world that are more naturally endowed

than Nigeria. With high-end technology we could feed the whole of Africa and the Middle East. We have all it takes to become as prosperous as America, if not more.” Dr Robin Sanders, former US Ambassador to Nigeria, makes a similar observation, when considering foreign interest in investment: “It is a realisation that subSaharan Africa is the place to be, and is the next frontier for a high return on investment, for just about any sector as a business where you want to have growth.
“Even on the agriculture side, I always tell people that there are only two areas of the world where you have the most arable land left, one is sub-Saharan Africa and one is Latin America.
The other thing is where do we have the most water resources? They are in Latin America and Africa. So those are the growth areas together with population.
“You are going to have your future consumers here in terms of resources, whether they are land or water resources, extractive industry resources, or the most deposits of proven commodity reserves. Nigeria is very important to all those things.” Interestingly, the reality may be further ahead than the already good statistics published to date. Melissa Verreynne, an economist at NKC Independent Economists, has raised the point that preliminary estimates show that actual levels of private consumption in Nigeria are larger than the current estimate of its GDP. Consequently, new GDP figures could roughly sit between $340 billion and $420 billion for 2012 – up 25-54 per cent from the current estimate of $272 billion. Certainly, there are a host of positive indicators that Nigeria’s disposable wealth is quickly picking up, especially with the emergence of big-name international brands scrambling to establish themselves in the capital Abuja and the major economic hub of Lagos. In 2013, for example, Nigeria

A final, and key point to mention, is power and infrastructure. Like Mexico, this is an all-important turning point, which could determine economic success or failure. “Here is an amazing statistic,” says O’Neill to the BBC: “About 170 million people in Nigeria share about the same amount of power that is used by about overtook the Republic of Ireland to become the biggest 1.5 million people in the UK. Almost every business has market for Guinness (if you can believe it), and names to generate its own power. Probably not as far as Nigeria, with its “It’s caught on with investors,” says Charles Robertson, huge population and wealth of natural resources, global chief economist at Renaissance Capital. “They that’s for sure. “Can you imagine, can you believe, recognise that there’s a resemblance to what we saw in that this country has been growing at seven per cent Asia [in the 1980s] and those who missed the incredible with no power, with zero power? Community BUILDING POWER In a world full of tech icons, Jimmy Wales stands alone. One-part geek, one-part business mogul, the Wikipedia founder talks about his history of entrepreneurship, his love of cheap phones and the value of enriching the mind WORDS: JACK PHILIPS

J

immy Wales, co-founder and self-confessed “Constitutional Monarch” of Wikipedia is a hard man to pin down. If he is not in his office on a conference call, chairing meetings on the future of global communications or hosting brainstorming sessions with young entrepreneurs, he is on a plane to meet potential investors to expand his increasingly growing Wiki empire. Between 2010 and 2013, he racked up an admirable number of passport stamps, visiting 30 different countries in 18 months. Having founded Wikipedia, the world’s fifth mostvisited website, he has become a global icon for digital start-ups and aspiring entrepreneurs. Since it was

founded in 2001, Wikipedia has grown to become “the largest and most extensive online encyclopaedia on the internet” (says Wikipedia) and is for many the go-to source of information available anywhere at the tap of a button. From entries on the 1966 World Cup England squad to articles on ‘Phantom Rings’, ‘Socialist Hair’ and ‘Post-Ejaculatory Guilt Syndrome’ – it can all be investigated through Wikipedia. The name has even become a verb in itself – believe me, Wikipedia it. Having built one of the world’s most well-known websites, the question of net worth is always on the table, but Wales is well-rehearsed in deflecting questions about his income. The New York Times remarked on the

fact that, surprisingly, “Jimmy Wales is not an internet billionaire”, something Jimmy openly laughs about and cares little for. When asked by a journalist from another publication how much money he did, in fact, have, he replied: “I have seven dollars in my pocket for lunch.” Even if he did have the wealth associated with, say, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg or Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, he explains he wouldn’t have the time or the inclination to spend it. “I own a Huawei IDEOS smartphone,” he told a crowd earlier this year. “I believe you can pick them up for under $50 – they have sold hundreds of thousands of these in Kenya. Really smart phones for a really low price.” So there are no fast cars in his garage, no private yachts tethered to Monaco docks, no hot-air balloon expeditions in his diary. Nor does he sleep on a mattress in Silicon Valley, eat cold pizza and give press conferences in hooded sweatshirts, as some of his tech contemporaries have been known to do. To know Jimmy Wales you have to know Wikipedia. Built on his no-for-profit idea of “a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge” Wikipedia has, to date, over 300 million articles, in 285 languages and more than 532 million visitors to the site every month. He has since founded the for-profit Wikia, a web hosting service that derives most of its income from advertising, from which he draws a wage. For Jimmy, his work is about “community”, “free-flowing information” and the democratisation of technology”. This is what drives the man and is something that is inherent in every aspect of his life. As a young boy he was educated in part by his mother, who ran a two-room schoolhouse in Huntsville, Alabama, giving Jimmy ample opportunity for reading and intendant study. “That impacted on my later work and the way I think about things today,” he says. “Also, my uncle owned a computer store, so I learned to program reasonably early on. We had a TRS-80 from RadioShack at home. We got a Commodore later on.” His father, too, was an entrepreneur – owning his own grocery shop. “In our family, it was ‘normal’ to do your own thing,” he says. Indeed, one of Jimmy’s first businesses was an online food-ordering service in downtown Chicago. Unfortunately it didn’t work. His interest in technology grew and in 1996 he created his own search-engine tool called Bomis. “The main difference was that users could make web rings, connecting sites that had similar topics. So the connection to my later work is that we allowed people

to categorise websites on their own, under any kind of topic.” Similar to Yahoo, it sowed the seed for the encyclopaedic tool for which he would later go on to become world-famous. Time magazine named him in its list of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2006 due to the popularity of Wikipedia. Its reach has skyrocketed since, and made headlines across the globe for a variety of reasons. The site was banned in China in 2006 for containing anti-government material, which goes against much of Jimmy’s thirst for open information. It has also been the butt of the odd joke too – having been ‘punked’ several times by prankster users. “There was a great parody article called 'European Toilet Paper Holder' he says. “It’s still online in somebody’s blog. It’s quite funny, right down to parodying our style and pictures.” 2014 has been an important year for Jimmy. He attended the Digital Life Design conference in Munich earlier this year to unveil his strategic stake in a new project 'The People’s Operator' (TPO), a mobile communications company that donates ten per cent of the user’s bill to charitable foundations, plus a proportion of the company’s profits, and hopes to raise “$1 billion” for good causes. “Wouldn’t that be amazing,” he says, hoping to capitalise initially on the UK and US markets. He sees that mobile technology impacts on everybody, through communication, education, politics and leisure and believes that investment in companies such as TPO represents more than just a mobile network. “It’s not just about 'oh, I can look up a restaurant on my phone', but 'who can I communicate with? Who is tracking me? Who is watching me?' These issues impact on everybody.” Recently launched in the UK, TPO is up-and-running and is soon to be available in the US, but Jimmy sees a change happening in African markets too – indicated by both his choice of phone and no doubt a top-up of air miles from flying to the region. “As the developing world comes to the market more and more, they will be seeing the world through a mobile device,” he says. “African farmers are text messaging across town to find out the best prices for crops.” In 2009, internet usage in Nigeria was available to just 16 per cent of the population, but that number is

expected to be around the 40 per cent mark by 2016 – proof for Jimmy that “the next two years are going to be very interesting indeed. It’s a force for potentially giving massive sums of money to good causes, it works and I can see how to scale it.” The DLD (Digital Life Design network) for Jimmy is a “family reunion of sorts”, something of a tech institution where he meets up with friends and business acquaintances – not surprising since he has made his name on building communities. “It's been very busy,” he told me as his assistant handed him a bottle of water. Between quick sips and an animated shuffle of the feet it was clear that he was wired with excitement. “I chose to tell the press here because DLD has become industryrenowned for its focus on the future and a great place to discuss new ideas.” Jimmy spends most of his time between the UK and the US and applauds the entrepreneurial spirit this side of the Atlantic – he is, of course, a resident of the UK and married to Tony Blair’s former diary secretary Kate Garvey. His home and office are in London and there are many potential projects dotted around the capital too. He champions the bright sparks that have elevated sites like the Old Street Roundabout, dubbed Silicon Roundabout, for pioneering the UK tech startup scene. “It’s great that the UK government is taking an interest in its young tech industry.” In December 2012, David Cameron announced that the Government would put £50 million towards a project to regenerate Old Street Roundabout through the creation of a large indoor “civic space” dedicated to startups, while foreign investment is trickling in too. But Jimmy has become worried that the UK is dabbling in information censorship. “Just when you think ‘This is great – the government really knows what it is doing,’” he explains, “you open the paper and see the latest bone-headed idea.” Never being one to overpoliticise what he says, Jimmy refrains from Bono-esque stances on world affairs but manages to bridge a social agenda with a cheeky charisma. “I come from the free software movement, which has always been political,” he explains. “It comes from openness and freedom, from making rational decisions and from the deeper geek culture – the culture of Star Trek.” Beam me up, Jimmy.

UK retailing is all upside-down. Last Christmas went very well at highdiscount stores, yet other shops did better because they held off on discounting. The big food stores did poorly, regardless of pricing, and convenience shops did better because consumers didn’t want to drive far. The future is all about multi-channels. Talk about an interesting sector to invest in WORDS: ANDY ROSENBAUM

C

ertainly, Christmas was brighter than expected, and for retailers like Next, this accounted for nearly a third of the year’s sales. Next CEO Lord Wolfson says that the company’s policy of never discounting before Boxing Day had made the difference, that “Performance was significantly ahead of expectations” and that the company paid a £75 million special dividend to shareholders to distribute surplus cash. “Next’s range pushed the right buttons with consumers last Christmas,” insists Neil Saunders, an analyst at retail researcher Conlumino. What does make it interesting is that retailing is increasingly becoming a matter of fulfilling customer expectations, rather than delivering value. Cutting prices, by itself, ain’t gonna cut it no more. “Today, consumers are buying fewer goods, but shopping more often to help them manage their budgets effectively,” explains Keith Richardson, managing director of the

retail sector team at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking. What’s more, they want what they want when they want it. Says Roger Lee, CEO of TAL Apparel Limited: “Retailers in general are going after the same customer wallet pool. Many will struggle because consumers are getting savvier with the products they will buy. They research a lot more, comparing product prices and features as information on the internet becomes more accessible from multiple devices. Retailers that do not innovate or give consumers what they are looking for will fail to win the sale, even if they offer a cheapervalue proposition.” All retailers are trying to find the ideal combination of bricks, clicks and logistics – consumers will even pick up goods from lockers in Tube stations. So the online services have to be present, but they are not everything. Consumers also want to be able to pop out and find what they need at a nearby store. The small convenience shops are becoming popular again

it, N Brown makes clothes for the old and the fat, two fast-growing demographics to which, of course, we do not belong... (actually I shop there quite often, being a fat old geezer). One might accuse this retailer of having a cynical view of the world, but it is working: shares in the company have more than doubled in value over the past two years and analysts say that they are still undervalued. The group has handled the traditional and online ordering mix well, as 45 per cent of its sales came from mobile phones. Clearly, this is one to watch. Yet another niche player that seems to be getting it right is chocolatier Thorntons. Its shares rose three per cent to 147.5p in January as it unveiled sales up 6.9 per cent, largely as a result of stronger sales through supermarkets. Twelve months ago they were changing hands at just 42p. Analysts at Charles Stanley have given the stock a ‘buy’ rating, with the THT Thorntons share price target set at 200p. The company has been gradually closing its less valuable stores on the high streets and shifting to supermarket and online sales which bring in more value. Another niche player that seems to have got the mix right is Primark, the discount fashion chain. Primark does not sell online, so analysts are a bit mystified by its defiant high-street strategy. The proof was in the Christmas pudding, however, and Primark’s was sweet with a 12 per cent leap in sales in the 16 weeks to 4 January. Once again, apparently, getting the customer expectations right was key. Analysts say that Primark got the stock right, as last Christmas novelty offerings were a very big trend. In tructh, the very cheap clothing sold at Primark isn’t worth selling online. Rather, the Primark model is about multi-purchase, about filling up the shopping basket. Selling one dress for £7 doesn’t make money. You have to pile up a bunch. This is why, analysts say, Primark doesn’t need to sell online. Primark is a subsidiary of Associated British Foods, and the parent company has issues with commodity sugar sales that have affected the share price, however. All the same, it’s worth watching as Primark pulls it up. OK, so we know it’s complicated. There are clearly a lot of factors at work in determining UK retail success, far more than there were in the past. Still, pick a winner, and you could make a lot of money on the stock.

“Consumer confidence data and economic data are running ahead of reality. So it doesn’t actually feel any better if you are a customer”

as a result. Sainsbury’s, which is suffering at its big hypermarkets, now says that its convenience stores outnumber its large supermarkets. With all this uproar in the trade, there isn’t much optimism about taking advantage of the improving UK economy. “The UK’s retail leaders believe it is going to take some time for the better numbers we are hearing from the Office of National Statistics to translate into a significant rise in consumer confidence and an overall improvement in the picture for retail,” say analysts at the Kurt Salmon retail consultancy in a report. “It will continue to be challenging. We are seeing green shoots and we think we’re all feeling more confident than we were, but the consumer is still very worried about the cost of living and rising prices, and any growth in the economy will still have to work its way through. Consumer confidence data and economic data are running ahead of reality. So it doesn’t actually feel any better if you are a customer.” So what to look for as an investor? Specific retailers, in specific niches, seem to be particularly able to profit from the current brouhaha. Next is clearly one. Another is catalogue retailer N Brown. As the FT puts

Let’s go to Monaco

H

ome to fast cars, a stunning coastline and the eternally-beautiful Grace Kelly, Monaco may be the world’s second smallest country, but it is the definition of glamour on a big scale. Sunbathing and soirées inundate the social calendars of Monegasques, but no event is more prominent in the minds of locals and tourists than the annual Monaco Grand Prix. Taking place between 22 – 25 May, this year will mark the 85th anniversary of the legendary race.

Where To Stay HÔtel de Paris Monte-Carlo Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo is the place to stay in Monaco. The majestic five-star hotel commands Monte Carlo’s iconic square and is every inch the glamorous spectacle you would expect. The hotel’s suitably flawless spec could quite easily rival the Prince’s Palace and includes 182 rooms, 41 suites, three restaurants and access to the Thermes Marins MonteCarlo spa. Watch drivers zoom past as you sip cocktails from the terrace and, as the evening draws in, you’ll find yourself just a stone’s throw away from the excitement of Casino de Monte-Carlo. D hoteldeparismontecarlo.com

Where To Eat Elsa and Le Vistamar If you feel the need to venture away from Hotel de Paris’ array of Michelin-starred eateries – which you may find yourself at pains to do – both Elsa and Le Vistamar offer flawless haute-cuisine against the backdrop of breathtaking harbour views. Whilst the former offers contemporary cuisine of the French and Italian Riviera, the latter prides itself on fish cooked to perfection. For your aperitif, head to Casino de Monte-Carlo’s Bar Salle Blanche or, alternatively, dine at Hotel de Paris MonteCarlo’s Restaurant Le Grill. What to do The prince’s palace and more If watching all those sleek Ferraris hurtling around hairpin bends gets too much, take yourself off to view the dazzling coastline from the Prince’s Palace. Whilst there, be sure to check out this famous clifftop castle which is now home to Prince Albert II. Monaco’s magnificent Jardin Exotique is a must-see for those keen to see a collection of the world’s finest flora in one place. But anyone with a penchant for adrenaline mustn’t leave Monaco without a little flutter at Monte Carlo’s one and only Grand Casino.

Mendoza in late autumn

Vineyard at Mendel

T

he unique region and city of Mendoza could be described as a geographical and climatic oddity. Situated in western Argentina close to the Andes mountain range, it is essentially a desert that only receives around five days of rain per year. On top of that, rural areas often experience the Zonda wind, a dramatic change of pressure that can tear down trees and cause fires. Even so, Mendoza’s location and weather patterns work in its favour. In the summer, temperatures can reach 40°C (104°F), but a lack of humidity means the heat is much more enjoyable than other parts of the country. Mendoza’s outstanding natural landscape, which includes Aconcagua – the highest mountain in the Western hemisphere – is perfect for hiking, white-water rafting, skiing and just about any other adventure sport you can think of. But perhaps the most significant consequence of Mendoza’s distinctive environment and microclimate is wine. So when you couple this with Argentina’s legendary steak, it is no surprise that this captivating town and region has become one of South America’s most appealing destinations. Responsible for around two-thirds of national production, Mendoza is Argentina’s shining light when it comes to wine. Back in the 19th century, European oenologists came to Argentina bearing premium grape vines and a wealth of wine-making knowledge. The

due to the wide range of varieties available. The distinctive and aromatic Torrontés is great with seafood or spicy dishes, while Malbec should always be served with meat, especially a typical Argentinian barbecue known as ‘asado’.

VISITING MENDOZA Mendoza itself is a quaint and pleasant town featuring tree-lined streets, expansive greenery and some delightful squares. Both residents and tourists can take advantage of Parque General San Martín, a picturesque public space containing multiple sculptures, rose gardens and a regatta lake. “Mendoza is the sort of destination people visit for just a couple of days and end up never leaving” industry has not looked back since and today, Mendoza’s three main wine regions - Luján de Cuyo, Valle de Uco and Maipú – boast more than 1,500 different wineries. Notable varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Torrontés, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. However, the region’s bestseller is Malbec, which, despite having French roots, is now synonymous with Mendoza. Producing a deep, full-bodied red wine, this variety of grape thrives in Mendoza due to the clean air, intense sunlight, warm daytime temperatures and cool nights brought about by high-altitude vineyards. In terms of cuisine, Mendoza is much like the rest of the country, but benefits from fantastic wine pairings

Independencia are perhaps the biggest draw, but smaller public squares, like the pretty Plaza España, featuring intricate and detailed tiles, are well worth a visit. “Mendoza is the sort of destination people visit for just a couple of days and end up never leaving,” notes Amanda Barnes, editor of English language publication Wine Republic. “As well as the wonderful weather, the main point of visiting Mendoza is to enjoy the great wine and seeing its beautiful landscapes while taking things slowly.” Along with many other traits, it is this laid-back way of life, coupled with the social and outgoing nature of wine tourism, that makes Mendoza so appealing.

Therefore, if you’re looking for an enchanting holiday destination, where premium wine, sumptuous cuisine and world-class accommodation are in abundance, it is difficult to look beyond Mendoza.

MENDOZA ESSENTIALS WINERY – Achaval Ferrer Established initially as a hobby by five friends, Achaval Ferrer has blossomed into a charming estate that produces some sublime wines. In fact, its 2008 Finca Bella achieved 98 Robert Parker points, a quite remarkable feat in the wine industry. The tasting experience here is intimate and enjoyable, as wellinformed guides let guests sample a delectable range of red wines. But before leaving, be sure to sample some of the outstanding olive oil too.

TOUR – Trout & Wine Founded by Irish expat Charlie O’Malley, Trout & Wine’s Premium Wine Tour ensures tourists see and experience the best of what Mendoza has to offer. After being picked up from your hotel, an English-speaking guide will give a brief overview of the region and answer any questions. Before you know it, a couple of tasting sessions at Mendel and Renacer have taken place and it is soon time for lunch at the super-luxurious Club Tapiz. Following a final afternoon session at Luigi Bosca, you’ll inevitably make your way back to Mendoza with several bottles, or even cases, of Mendoza’s finest wines in tow.

VISIT – Park Hyatt Hotel Sitting opposite Plaza Independencia, the Park Hyatt Hotel hosts numerous prestigious events throughout the year for both wine and food aficionados. Its wine and tapas evening, which combines an ever-changing menu with local blends and varieties, should not be missed.

FOOD – Terrazas de los Andes Even though some buildings date back more than 100 years, Terrazas de los Andes has been transformed into a thoroughly modern winery that oozes style and grace. First impressions from the immaculate interior and charming garden are awesome, but somehow the winery’s superb food manages to surpass these initial perceptions. Fresh, local ingredients are used to create gourmet cuisine, which is wonderfully complemented by its Reserve and Single Vineyard wines.

STAY – Casa Antucura The winner of the Art & Culture category at the 2014 Best of Wine Tourism Awards, this boutique hotel and winery sits in stunning surroundings besides the Andes Mountains. In addition to this breathtaking landscape, Casa Antucura boasts an array of beautiful architecture and art, including the grand library’s truly magnificent ceiling artwork. The Art of VACATION After years of being associated with the European art crowd, Florence is going through a renaissance of its own, welcoming both the partying elite and culturevultures in a mix of history, high-fashion and some intriguing parties WORDS: AIMEE LATIMER Hotel Lungarno guest room

I

braced myself, on visiting Florence for the first time, for the crush of people typical of ‘tourist meccas’: fearing swarms of touring school kids sticky with gelato and the inevitable sparring to get a decent table. And actually (although I did visit in the spring rather than in the city’s peak time between June and August) I found a quietly confident place. The kind of city where – being the art and cultural hub of the Renaissance and consequently needing no bells and whistles to attract visitors – the chalkboard signs outside restaurants are in the native Italian and not English, tiny cafes have only a couple of tables huddled outside, and where you can walk through the streets, pause and look at the sculptures, without being jostled off your perch by someone brandishing a camera phone. As a city, Florence is a web of medieval streets and old buildings that rise up tall and thin, making the whole city compact and accessible on foot – a positive when you come face-to-face with Italy’s infamously unpedantic drivers. The city splits over the Arno River,

an expansive chunk of water that mirrors the ochre buildings that line the walled bank. Niche boutiques stand next to designer stores such as Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo – both brands having originated in Florence and both having quirky museums dedicated to them in the centre of the city. Be sure to visit the leather market, crammed with good-quality handbags and jackets with price tags that can be haggled down. For art, you’re spoilt too. Aside from the usual tourist sights, on top of Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery and da Vinci at the Uffizi Gallery, you can find exceptional exhibitions throughout smaller galleries with shorter lines, such as Palazzo Stozzi’s current exhibition on the works of Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. After, if you just want to wander around and take in the city, do so with gelato. Although avoid the stores where the gelato is piled in small mountains on the till – this gelato is full of preservatives to make it firm. Instead, head to Perché no! Familyowned since 1939, it makes its variety of classic and

London City Named Airport of the Year

Heathrow Slipstream Unveiled

London’s only city-based airport has picked up the accolade for the ‘Best Airport with under 10 million passengers per year’ at the 2014 Air Transport News Awards in Istanbul. Canary Wharf’s local airport was described by its CEO, Declan Collier, as having the best transport links and location in the UK, as well as being the country’s most punctual airport. He went on to celebrate the airport’s dedication to time-saving initiatives: “We offer a unique, time-based brand proposition – a 20-minute check-in and a 15-minute arrival – and we’re investing heavily in new technology to maintain that proposition.” Dubai International was crowned overall winner, while Doha International won in the ‘10-30 million passengers category.’

In anticipation of the opening of its new Terminal 2 in June this year, Heathrow Airport has just unveiled Slipstream, a major new sculpture. On 23 April, the ambitious, twisting and flowing aluminium form, designed to mimic the flight path of a Zivko Edge 540 stunt plane, took centre stage in the terminal’s Covered Court. Created by internationally-renowned British artist Richard Wilson RA and curated by Mark Davy, founder of public arts agency Futurecity, the 70-metrelong structure – which weighs 77 tonnes and is suspended 18 metres in the air between two passenger walkways – will be one of the longest permanent sculptures in Europe and is expected to greet up to 20 million visitors travelling through the terminal per year.

LATAM Announce Overhaul

Etihad’s Diamond First Class passengers can say farewell to restless hours spent on long-haul flights thanks to the launch of a new program to improve inflight sleep quality. Over the past two years, Etihad Airways has been working closely with a panel of sleep experts to create the ideal on-board sleeping environment and have now introduced a range of luxury sleep features. All-natural mattresses made from extracts of the Hevea tree will help regulate body temperature and 100 per cent cotton sheets and large down feather bedding will add a touch of home comfort, while a sleep-time beverage service will provide the perfect cocoa-based nightcap.

It isn’t just the forthcoming World Cup celebrations in Brazil that are putting South America in the spotlight, Latin American airlines LAN and TAM are strengthening their global presence with the introduction of their new cabin designs. The unified designs, which aim to simultaneously promote comfort and South America’s rich culture, mark one of the most physical examples of the two airlines’ union since they merged in 2012 to form LATAM Airlines Group. Two aircraft currently feature the new design and, from 2015, two new models will be introduced into its long-haul fleet, both benefiting from the new design in Economy and Premium Business classes.

Chelsea in Bloom

The darling buds of May are out once again this year and there is nowhere better to take in their heady, floral aromas than the Chelsea Flower Show. The Royal Horticultural Society’s annual five-day event, which takes 25 days to set up, is Britain’s most prestigious flower show, with the opening famously attended by the Royal Family each year. While RHS flower shows date back to the late Georgian era, the Chelsea Flower Show has been held in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital for close to a century – and 2014 will be no exception. Gates will be open to RHS members from Tuesday 20 May, before opening to the public from Thursday to Saturday. Highlights this year will include a twilight event of light opera by Opera Holland Park on the Friday evening, as well as memorial gardens to mark the centenary of the First World War. Good Taste

It's beginning to look a lot like summer in Canary Wharf. Soak up the sun with al fresco dining at the crowd-pleasing Ibérica La Terraza words: Aimee Latimer

A

t Ibérica La Terraza you can drink wine from a porrón. What is a porrón you may ask – removing your suit jacket with caution? It’s a squat bottle with a pointed spout that can be found in the white pavilion of the Ibérica La Terraza restaurant, which has reopened in Cabot Square for summer. And here, brave drinkers are invited to give pouring wine straight from porrón-to-mouth a go. In London’s competitive dining scene, where restaurants are always striving to do something a little different to make an impression, Ibérica La Terraza stands out – ironically so – for offering something ageold – a little Spanish café with wicker chairs, parasols and strings of lights wrapped round the trees. Ibérica La Terraza is special because to get there you simply step out of the office, but when there, you feel like you’ve stepped out of the city. Even on a drizzly day, like the one on which I visited, the trees encircle the space, the rain draws out the earthy smell of the leaves and the sounds of city life are muted by the fountain and tinkling of glasses chinking and people chattering. And in the sun it’s glorious. Back to the drinks. If you wish to avoid shame-facedly picking up the shards of a shattered porrón, try one of the cocktails, such as the house special, La Terraza Cocktail, made from gin, cranberries and tangy lime. Food is served from brunch to evening with a menu of light Spanish food. It includes salads tossed with melon and smoked salmon, Spanish omelette tapas and hearty bocodillos – sourdough baguettes filled with the likes of ham and peppers. Ensure you try the cured meat too –

the Iberica chain’s signature. It comes available by the platter, with optional cheese, and for something extraspecial there's the limited-edition Jamón Ibérico Juan Pedro Domeq, Bellota Ham from wild pigs and cured for at least 45 months in Jabugo. Next, order a selection of pinchos – little savoury bites often found in the bars of northern Spain. Served on a small squares of bread, their toppings vary from baby squid to snow crab and trout, and offers fun bursts of flavour. Pinchos are ideal for dipping into with a glass of chilled wine and a perfect snacking treat. Canary Wharf boasts a valiant al fresco offering, with many of its restaurants spilling outside with chairs and tables. However, Ibérica La Terraza is purely dedicated to al fresco dining and its reopening is a joyful indicator that we’re on the cusp of summer. D Ibérica La Terraza, Cabot Square

‘Sweet and sour’ honey and cheese pairs particularly well with nutty cheeses such as Gruyère, or goats cheeses.

Fruity fig chutney is best served with soft cheeses like Brie de Meaux. With onion chutney, try hard cheeses such as Cheddar.

The perfect partner for Parmesan. For variety, try vinegar blended with truffle oil for a pungent earthy taste.

EXPERT COMMENT SALES A CHANGE IN THE AIR

THE BUYER’S HEALTHY APPETITE

NICK MOORE, senior negotiator at Knight Frank in Islington, comments on the trends in the residential sales market

SOPHIE RODZIK, negotiator at Knight Frank in Islington, comments on the trends in the residential sales market

THE FIRST QUARTER of 2014 has, as we expected, seen the Islington market continue to perform extremely well. The low cost of borrowing and a lack of good quality stock, coupled with a surge in demand from new buyers as spring takes hold, has added to what was already a highly competitive market. Nowhere is this more evident than in the house market. The profile of your “typical” Islington buyer has changed enormously over the past few years. Once upon a time, Upper Street was a destination for locals but held very little interest to those from outside the immediate area, but all that has changed. With the extraordinary re-development of areas like King’s Cross and the City Road basin and the global recognition they have created, the market has now become much more international. In the same way, in years gone by, as an agent, it was fairly easy to predict where a buyer would come from as in many cases they lived all but a few streets away; not any more. We have also seen a steady influx of buyers from other parts of London too, in particular the more popular parts of West London. As prices have continued to climb across the capital, we have found ourselves dealing with more and more buyers who either can’t or aren’t prepared to pay the prices that are being asked in areas like Notting Hill or they’re taking advantage of the market in these areas, selling up and moving east. As a result, there is now competition at every price point and many of the properties that we have been instructed on recently are being snapped up before they even make it to the open market. It wasn’t so long ago that £1,000 per square foot represented the top end of the market locally, whereas now, it is commonplace to achieve £1,100 to £1,200 per square foot, or even more in some cases. With little prospect of the market changing, this trend is set to continue and as a result, I think we have some interesting times ahead.

THE PRESENT APPETITE for flats in Islington is nothing short of extraordinary, as is the lack of stock, which buyers are fighting over each property that comes to the market. We recently brought a stunning one bedroom flat to the market in a prime central Islington location, attracting 19 offers, in just two days, from investors and owner occupiers alike. The property sold for more than 10% over the original asking price. To say that our client was pleased is a massive understatement, and this is just one example, giving you an idea of demand in the current market. The demand has been replicated with every flat we’ve brought to the market in the last quarter, with most one to two bedroom properties having buyers before they even make it to the market. Knight Frank is heavily involved in the re-development of King’s Cross, which is having a huge impact on Islington prices. The regeneration has already begun, with completion expected in 2020. This will see almost 2000 new homes built, some of which are already complete. With purchases being made by both overseas and domestic buyers, we’ve seen a natural increase in interest in Islington property. Our involvement in the sales of other new developments, such as Folio on Micawber Street, has been incredibly successful, both off-plan and now that they’re complete, re-sales are selling to waiting buyers. As a general rule, buyers seem far more comfortable purchasing off-plan than ever before. Additionally Islington’s proximity to the City coupled with its competitive pricing, has resulted in widespread appeal to first time buyers, who are choosing Angel as the area of London to get on to the property ladder.

STATE OF THE MARKET The New vs. Old debate

Mortgage Review Implications

JASON TAYLOR, sales director at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

ALASDAIR CARPENTER, managing director of Lourdes Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

Future values of new builds have pushed up the prices for many resale residential homes within the area. Some developments have based their prices on values two or three years ahead, making the slightly older developments seem very attractive and good value for money. The new homes market has always been very successful in a rising market, with the majority of first phases selling overseas before being released in the UK. Many of the foreign purchasers have picked up on the fact that the UK has a highly-desirable market with values increasing year on year. Any market is prone to a recession, but London will always recover in a shorter period of time compared to other cities across the globe. Investors see the UK as a safe haven for their portfolios to grow over a ten year period and have the comfort factor of knowing their properties will have little or no void period as professional tenants always need accommodation to rent. The resale market has already seen the ripple effect as many newer developments are coming in with expensive price tags and the living areas seem to be getting smaller and smaller as land prices increase. The older the property, the more generous the living space generally is and that is a big advantage when buying a resale property as a home as opposed to an investment. This is because, many of the buyers will usually own their asset for between 3 – 5 years before moving on. As a buyer you always pay a premium for anything new, however, if in a good position, there is always a deal to be had and if a buyer is purchasing more than one unit they will almost certainly get a reduction of some sort. The choice for buyers might be limited on the resale market but bear in mind the most attractive stock for new builds will be sold before any UK buyers gets a chance to even have a look – unless you’re prepared to fly to Singapore!

Talk to any estate agent in the London region and the feedback will be consistent: the market is racing away at an unsustainable rate. Property is in such short supply that most properties are being sold for over the asking price and in many cases via informal tender, with buyers being asked to supply a sealed best and final offer. However, this month sees the introduction of the Mortgage Market Review and this measure is expected to prevent the creation of a property bubble that will, like all bubbles, eventually pop. The restrictions enforced by the Financial Conduct Authority will play a vital role in keeping a lid on what is fast becoming a volatile market place. The general premise is that stricter checks on affordability will be imposed on mortgage lending. The FCA will assume crucial importance to ensure multiples do not become too stretched and affordability is scrupulously checked. If these controls are rigorously applied this will most likely constrain price rises. The supply and demand issues fuelling the house buying frenzy will also be alleviated in the coming years as house builders are beginning to frantically satisfy demand by building as rapidly as they can. The question of when interest rates will rise is also now more of a concern than at any point in the last few years. For those considering selling, I can’t help but feel now is a great time to capitalise on the favourable market conditions.

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE Richard Pine-Coffin Director, Residential at JLL

Has JLL obtained any new developments or properties that have particularly caught your eye? Market activity has increased dramatically during the last 12 months supported by the revived confidence in the UK economy and a significant increase in demand from the home market. Developers are responding and the new opportunities are extremely exciting. Long forgotten and ‘mothballed’ sites are now coming alive and the effects of activity are clear in many regions. The regeneration of Battersea Power Station is arguably one of the most influential and anticipated schemes of this decade; the redevelopment of The Ram Brewery site in Wandsworth offers huge opportunities. There are so many other projects, to highlight them all is impossible in a few short paragraphs but note is worthy to Goodmans Fields, E1 and the changes Berkeley have undertaken to Leman Street, as with Canaletto to the City Road, EC1. Architecturally, future schemes to watch include Essential Living’s Helix, Baltimore Tower by Galliard, the long awaited Dollar Bay from Mount Anvil and two of the UK’s tallest

JLL 020 7337 4002 jll.co.uk/residential

residential buildings in Canary Wharf being in excess of 70 floors in height. Arguably Wood Wharf is one of the most significant projects undertaken in the Canary Wharf estate for years. Why is the London property market so resilient? Dating back to Roman times, London has been a catalyst for trade and commerce across the UK and further afield providing employment, wealth and opportunities to many. It is separated from a number of competitive cities through a number of advantages. Within the financial worlds we sit across the Meridian Line providing major trading time line advantages between the East and the West. The UK provides a stable and ethical environment to trade and reside with a long history of tolerance and acceptance. London is arguably one of the world’s most diverse and cultured cities providing significant prospects to its many residents. Do you invest in property? There are many ways to invest in property, whether through tangible assets such as ownership of a home, property or land, other considerations include shares, trusts and options. Do I invest personally? All my working life and more is invested in property.

PROPERTY

Spotlight on Canary Wharf As Canary Wharf becomes one of London’s most sought-after property zones – for investors and residents alike – Tony Usher, associate director of residential for JLL, explains why the market’s booming:

“P

rices are soaring around the Wharf. The secondhand market is as active now as it’s been since the credit crisis. At many developments, prices are 15 – 20 per cent higher than a year ago, which is staggering. It’s not just the sales market that’s motoring; the rentals market is flourishing too, which is encouraging news for both overseas and domestic investors. “The dynamics of the Canary Wharf housing market have changed quite a bit over the past few years. Importantly, it’s no longer Wharf workers only. We have seen many people move here from West London or South London, attracted by the bright, new build product on offer, as well as the lively leisure offerings and great connectivity. Canary Wharf itself has great shopping, restaurants, gyms and so on, but close by are Westfield Stratford and escape routes like London City Airport. People are happy to commute into the City and the West End from here, and it will get even easier once Crossrail arrives. As such, people love to buy and

rent here so we’re never short on demand, which adds to Canary Wharf’s appeal to investors. They are happy with returns and rarely see voids, which leads many to come back to buy more stock. Domestic investors are back in the market, too, and are taking advantage of the resurgence of Canary Wharf following several lacklustre years and with one eye on the boost from Crossrail.”

Canary Wharf’s Residential Market In Figures:  Demand has forced the average pricing in Canary Wharf up to around £750 per square foot, with some of the best units pushing towards £1,100 per sq ft.  Annual growth has accelerated to 14.4 per cent – higher than the 12.1 per cent Central London.  From 2011 – 2012 there were only 600 sales in Canary Wharf, but in 2013 alone more than 1,000 units were sold.  The biggest selling scheme last year was the Baltimore Tower by Galliard Homes. Designed by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and located close to South Quay DLR station, JLL sold more than 330 units within it.  Currently, a surge in residential development continues with more than 1,200 units currently under construction.
