show and Naomi Campbell is a fan of juicing. The diet tips of the runway elite range from the dull (steamed vegetables are the side dish du jour) to the downright absurd (baby food, anyone?) and yet there are few who would bypass a chance to know their secrets.

With more than 30 years experience in the modelling industry and a figure many would happily succumb to a lifetime of Ella’s Kitchen pouches for, it stands to reason that modelling heavyweight Elle Macpherson would follow a similar regime to her colleagues. Dubbed ‘The Body’ after gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue no less than five times during the 1980s, the now 52-year-old still outshines most on the modelling platform.

So it’s refreshing to hear that her guilty pleasures – for which she firmly denies any shame – include dark chocolate, whipped

“I believe true luxury is comfort and style. My aim was to design the perfect T-shirt bra – which I could never find – and I think that we have achieved it,” Macpherson tells me. “The collection centres around the body; there are contemporary sports-inspired pieces made using microfibre and Air Tech fabric in a selection of bold yet wearable colours. I would say that the bodysuit is the signature piece that will become a staple in every woman’s wardrobe.”

She describes her own style as “classic with a twist”, focusing on ease and comfort. “Dressing has to be effortless for me and I tend to have a bit of a uniform to make it easy,” she says. “Feeling good, strong and positive is important to me.” These are the elements that Macpherson drew on

Unearthing the problem and balancing her pH levels was, she tells me, a revelation – “I’ll never drink coffee on an empty stomach again” – and now, her mantra is relatively simple: “Drink lots of water and nourish your body properly. Her beauty regime seems to follow a similar beat. “My best advice is to always think of beauty from the inside out – an alkaline and pH-neutral body is a healthier body,” she says.“I also cannot stress the importance of a good night’s

I always think it looks its best in the sunshine – it doesn’t rain as much as people think!” she jokes.

I imagine quiet moments are hard to come by for Macpherson, who seems to be busier than ever creating a name for herself in the notoriously competitive retail industry. She’s not the first model to go from billboard to boardroom and, with a stream of social media-savvy models capturing a new generation, it’s unlikely she’ll be the last.

What makes Macpherson stand out from the crowd is her determination to be more than just a face of a brand. While she cites “great teams, co-dreamers and cooperation” as key to her various businesses’ successes, she’s quick to assure me that her association with her various projects extends further than a shared name.

I used to walk past all the wisteria in Notting Hill on my way to work and that’s how I started Oriental Garden with the Wisteria necklace. I wanted to replicate how the plant grows and falls. My other favourite flowers are lily of the valley and dahlias.

My mother-in-law is Italian so when we visit Italy, we go and look at open-house gardens together. I think it’s such a lovely thing to see when you travel. I always go when I’m in Hong Kong, and in New York I visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

The seven-piece collection includes the Question Mark necklace with nine ivy leaves in white gold and diamonds, which twines round the neck. It has also been depicted in a double-finger ring.

Even Tessa Packard will admit that she may have been in a slightly odd mood when designing her latest collection, which includes ceramic pigs suspended off earrings and swinging bats handcarved in buffalo bone. ome would call Cristóbal Balenciaga the most important couture designer of the 20th century. He mentored Hubert de

Givenchy and Oscar de la Renta. Christian Dior described him as “the master of us all” and Coco Chanel said he was “a couturier in the truest sense of the word… The others are simply fashion designers.” Eighty years since he opened his first Parisian store on 10 Avenue George V in Paris, Balenciaga is worn by every style maven, from Kate Moss and Sienna Miller to Nicole Kidman and Lady Gaga. One Instagram post from Kim Kardashian West at the Balenciaga S/S17 show in Paris last October racked up a staggering 1.6m ‘likes’.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that a retrospective of Balenciaga’s couture has been in the works at the Victoria and Albert Museum for years. Thanks to Cecil Beaton’s exhibition at the museum in 1972, the year Balenciaga died, the V&A houses the largest collection of the designer in the UK and this year marks not only the 80th anniversary of the 10 Avenue George V store, but it’s the centenary of the opening of Balenciaga’s first ever fashion house in San Sebastián, Spain. “The way he shaped fashion is iconic; it was Balenciaga who shaped the body rather than restricting

it and moved away from the hourglass silhouette that was dominant at Dior, into a more avantgarde, modernist look,” says Cassie DaviesStrodder, who curated the V&A’s upcoming Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion exhibition. “We’ve been wanting to do this exhibition for so long. As well as the two anniversaries, the brand really feels like it’s having a moment. The name is back on everyone’s lips, so it seems a good time to be looking back at where it all began.”

Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion will run from May 2017 until February 2018 and will focus on the latter part of Balenciaga’s 50-year career in the 1950s and 1960s. “This was the point where he really departed from other designers and distilled what his ideas were about – the body and fashion and design,” says Davies-Strodder. “His early work is also fabulous but our collection at the museum focused on that period anyway and, when we looked more closely at it, we could see that the kinds of shapes, materials and cutting he was using is what is so strongly seen in his legacy today.”

I also think he’s a ‘designer’s designer’, like Alexander McQueen, who is revered by people in the industry because they see the integrity of his vision and how bold he was.” As such, you can expect to see pieces from André Courrèges, Emanuel Ungaro, J.W. Anderson, Phoebe Philo for Céline, Molly Goddard, Simone Rocha, Erdem, Balenciaga’s own former and current creative directors, Nicolas Ghesquière and Demna Gvasalia, plus many more.

“Balenciaga’s work was so true to modernity and femininity, innovative and inviting,” Rocha tells us.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Balenciaga dressed the rich, famous and fashion elite. Greta Garbo, Ava Gardner, Gloria Guinness and Mona von Bismarck were regular clients, and Davies-Strodder and her team researched archives and collections around the world to put the exhibition together. “We sourced pieces from France, Spain, Switzerland, everywhere,” she says. “We were really keen to tap collections that hadn’t been seen before. We have lots of pieces from Ava Gardner, who lived around the corner from the V&A in her later life and shopped at Balenciaga in Paris and at his sister label, Eisa in Spain.”

She goes on, “She bought fairly austere Balenciaga pieces and added a touch of Hollywood glamour. We’ve got a lace coat that she added ostrich feathers to, and a cape and dress she had added a floral trim to. She looked at her couture clothes as her ‘babies’ and she would ask for her wardrobe to be opened every morning, to ‘let her babies breathe’.”

We define ourselves as a chic and Parisian spirit mixed with London’s rock ’n’ roll attitude. French people have a timeless way of dressing: the silhouette is elegant, sometimes intellectual, and it seems effortless, as though they haven’t thought it through. English people are more daring – associating colours no one else would think of – and their silhouettes are more provocative. The mix between the two is crucial – it’s one of our competitive advantages.

This season, more than ever, we shared personal inspirations and details we like, inspired by our journeys across India and Japan. Of course, all this is combined with The Kooples’ DNA, our tailoring expertise and our rock ’n’ roll spirit, but we wanted to share a new story. The collection is an invitation to a bohemian journey. We wanted it to have this free spirit and gypsy aesthetic inspired by colours, smells and flowers, but still embracing a tailored and couture approach. The explosion of vintage prints unearthed during our travels and developed in our studio define the collection.

RICHARD ROME AT CANARY WHARF Until 2 June Lobby, One Canada Square, Cabot Square and Westferry Circus FREE, open daily Richard Rome is one of a number of British sculptors working in cast, welded and forged metals who came to the fore in the 1970s, in a radical move to embrace industrial materials and methodology, championed by Anthony Caro and inspired by the American sculptor, David Smith, the vanguard of sculpture of this kind.

This is the largest exhibition of Rome’s work to be seen in London to date, with sculptures displayed in the lobby of One Canada Square, as well as outdoors at Westferry Circus and Cabot Square. From small studies to monumental pieces, the exhibition covers 40 years of sustained creativity in iron, steel and bronze, revealing Rome as an artist of originality and thoughtful endeavour.

Largely abstract, his sculpture also makes reference to the human form, albeit often subliminal.

Rome combined his personal creativity with teaching, from which he retired in 2008. He was appointed Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art in 2009. He has participated in many group exhibitions internationally and travels regularly to America where he has attended workshops and undertaken residencies. richardrome.co.uk

Korean artist Ah Ra Yang lives and works in Seoul and London. She graduated in 2016 with an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, where she focused on an exploration of time, measured and experienced. Her current work juxtaposes medical apparatus such as orthopaedic leg braces with botanical specimens, creating disturbing but compelling objects. ahrayang.com
