EDITOR’S LETTER

From the

editor

“A woman is like a tea bag – you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water” – Eleanor Roosevelt

“W

omen take over the Senate!” read the headlines following the last senatorial election in the US, where a whopping 20 per cent of the seats went to women. As Sheryl Sandberg drily noted, 20 per cent is not a takeover; 20 per cent is a problem. When I started this issue, I had no idea what it would become. A (to my mind) fairly simple concept, centred around the idea of empowering and celebrating working women, safe in the (misguided) knowledge that the hard work has mostly been done, rapidly turned into an empassioned mission to try to help even the playing field. I met some of London’s most successful women – CEOs, lawyers, entrepreneurs, athletes – hoping to gather a cheat sheet of advice (page 63). But nothing was that simple, easily summed up; every conversation I had led to another, something bigger. The sense of urgency was enormous, and the passion and conviction held by some of the women I have met this month is nothing short of extraordinary: women who have campaigned for equality, women who have set up networks in banks and corporations still relatively new to all these XX chromsomes flying around and even one woman taking on the £150-billion-a-year trafficking industry. I discovered that more than 40 years after the machinists walked out in Dagenham, a woman can still expect to earn 23 per cent less than her male counterpart (page 58). That despite outperforming men at every level in school and university, we can expect the law on equal pay to be effectively ignored, and that if we do reach the upper echelons of career success, the price can be overwhelmingly high: it might be lonely at the top, but it’s a hell of a lot lonelier being a woman there. This week, Emma Watson gave a brilliant speech on gender equality for the UN (#heforshe), asking why feminism is still confused with ‘man-hating’ – surely the most tiresome of all idiotic assumptions – calling for men to work with us to help achieve equality, for everyone’s sake. Good for her. As Watson said to a standing ovation: ‘If not now, when?’

Couture culture This month we have been captivated by the exquisite work of French-German photographer Cathleen Naundorf. She met fashion photographer Horst in the early 90s and he became both a mentor and a friend, inspiring her to move into fashion photography; in 1997 she began to shoot Paris runway shows backstage for Condé Nast and from 2005 to 2011, she worked on a series called Un Rêve de Mode, with six couture houses, including Chanel, Lacroix, Dior and Valentino. She was given access to gowns from their archives for her elaborate, theatrical shoots and the results can be seen in her new book: Haute Couture: The Polaroids of Cathleen Naundorf or through London’s Hamilton Gallery. Tough Love J.M. Weston is launching a new Country Gents collection, from October, with shoes that fall into the top bracket of the luxury market. Inspired, in part, by the equestrian lifestyle, the collection is an homage to detail. Take The Derby shoe, with its floral golf tip, the exposed stitching both flaunts the skill of the shoemaker, while also reinforcing the assembled pieces. Importantly, all the shoes are built to be strong and durable, with thoughtful design overriding the use of heavy material. For example, the double leather sole on the Square-toe Oxford shoe or the Ankle Boot’s tough, extra grip created by the Ridgeway sole. Subtle but strong – how gentlemanly. Aspinal of London’s Tech series of gadget-friendly bags have been a huge hit with women, but now it’s the guys’ turn. The newly launched men’s Tech bags have gadget-sized internal pockets with cable paths and an optional Tech Charger Pack. It uses smart battery technology to recognise how much power a device needs without overheating it – great for keeping powered-up on the go. Swing also comes with a special key to remove its spikes so you can enter the clubhouse without removing your shoes. D Swing, £1,980, Berluti, berluti.com

 The sound of better music Bang & Olufsen has introduced three new special editions of BeoPlay H6 headphones in the colours Graphite Blush, Bronzed Hazel and Blue Stone. The metallic against the soft lambskin looks fantastic and its bulkiness makes the kind of statement that puts anyone off from talking to you on public transport. With B&O you know you’re in for premium sound and the H6 is particularly clear, playing music as it was recorded with no sound-distorting bells and whistles. Its inline remote means you can control a device directly from the cord without fumbling in your bag, and at a light 230g it’s travel-friendly too. Brera Singlebreasted Wool Suit, £905, Gucci, matchesfashion.com

Work Subtle detailing on a shirt, like the fine white dots on this slightly sheer Kilgour one [right], will help soften a wall of black and make it more wearable. The wash of black on the A/W 14 runways hopefully means that black suits, with their high-impact silhouettes, will herald a resurgence in the office. And remember, a simple but sophisticated suit, like the single-breasted Brera by Gucci, will draw attention to the man, not the outfit.

Evening If you’re going out at night and a little concerned about being mistaken for a bouncer, add a bit of colour – particularly white, which is a clean and classic pairing for black. Sunny disposition It may feel optimistic to pick a moisturiser with an SPF when looking outside at the howling gales of British autumn, but it’s important. This soap is called the Ultimate Man Body Scrub Soap. What a name – doesn’t it just make you want to chop wood, down pints and shave? And, what a soap. It’s formulated with bran and oatmeal, which gives it that slight coarseness that buffs away dead skin even on tough areas like heels, waking up your skin – and you – in the morning.

Depending on how hirsute you are, your hair is different to your skin, so should you ever use a 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash? The answer is yes – if the product’s good. Cade Shower Gel from L’Occitane excels at both, leaving hair strong and shiny while cleansing all over – ideal if you’re in a hurry. Plus, if you also skip the cologne, it leaves a dry, woody scent too.

COS is the busy women’s fashion Holy Grail: classic, functional pieces that favour timeless style over passing trends. With its Autumn/Winter 2014 collection available in its Canary Wharf Jubilee Place store now, discover your new season’s wardrobe essentials It’s been almost a year since COS opened in Canary Wharf as one of the new stores in the Jubilee Place mall extension, situated a minute’s walk from the entrance to the Canary Wharf Jubilee line station. Immediately, the store struck a chord with the professional women working in and visiting Canary Wharf who crave fashion that is effortlessly stylish, but also functional to complement their busy lifestyles. As the name suggests (COS stands for ‘Collection of Style’) the brand favours timeless style over the newest fads. Considered design, block colours and unfussy silhouettes define its collections. Visit its Jubilee Place store to see the

new COS Autumn/Winter 2014 collection, which sports a utilitarian quality. Staple pieces in everyday colours, such as utility green and black, layer together to create a cohesive uniform of panelled skirts, blouses and slim fit trousers perfect for work – and for bar afterwards. Simple, updated details on classic pieces like a silk panel or a Peter Pan collar on a white shirt encourage touches of personal style, while still working as part of a cohesive uniform for outfits you can slip on, look great in and then forget about all day. Alongside these investment pieces there’s also fun, on-trend pieces to help keep the short days/long nights bearable: liven up the 9-5 with the burgundy fluid shirt dress over leather leggings; post-work, add some 60s-inspired over-the-knee boots. Women, fashion,

POWER

From Thatcher’s iconic skirt suits to Yves Saint Laurent’s bold ‘Le Smoking’ jacket, fashion and power have long been inextricably linked. Now, the Design Museum explores this link in its latest exhibit WORDS: melissa emerson

ho can forget the image of a groomed Thatcher going into Parliament. Never shy of her gleaming pearls and perfectly coiffed hair, Thatcher’s signature feminine but powerful style – skirt and jacket suits, complete with oversized bows and sharp, boxy handbags – was an armour against the sea of suits that she went on to lead. In 2012, the jade green outfit that the first female British Prime Minister wore as she was elected leader of the Conservative party in 1975, sold for £25,000 at Christie’s, a considerable amount for a piece that was not designer, couture, or even particularly glamorous. Although certainly not the first woman to use her image to influence public opinion, Thatcher’s steely determination to manage her persona, starting with what she wore, is something that she is still remembered for

today. Her pearls, a gift from her husband, remained a part of her look despite being advised to ‘lose them’ and in fact became iconic, synonymous with the Iron Lady. Recent years have seen a new wave of female firsts, from Christine Lagarde’s appointment as the first female managing director of the IMF, to the first female head of a major car company, General Motors’ Mary Barra. This month, as we celebrate women in power, the Design Museum do the same with its new exhibition, Women Fashion Power. While often dismissed as frivolous, this year’s updated figures suggest the direct value of the fashion industry to the UK economy is £26 billion, showing a phenomenal £5 billion increase in the last five years alone. This exhibition sets out to demonstrate that when it comes to women, fashion and power are not – and have in fact never been – mutually exclusive.

“It feels that this is absolutely the right time to be addressing such a topic” says Donna Loveday, the Design Museum’s Head of Curatorial, who co-curated the exhibition with fashion expert and commentator Colin McDowell. “The exhibition will celebrate women who are leaders in their field, and provide a platform for those women to express their views about fashion.” Naturally, as women have gained power, attitudes to fashion choices have been proportionally affected; think of the practical land girls of the 1940’s with their utilitarian trench coats, or the liberated women of the 1960s in their super-short Mary Quant skirts. As Loveday notes: “more professional women are now engaging with contemporary fashion and no longer feel the need to follow strict rules and conventions.” Today’s fashions are a far cry from historical ones, that have seen women squeezed into everything from restrictive corsets to toe-pinching heels. Obviously clothes are a vital component of the working woman’s wardrobe, but Loveday wanted to look beyond the surface and use the exhibition as an opportunity to explore how women of power and influence use fashion to define their place in the world. Individuality is key; women can embrace their own style and femininity while commanding respect. The exhibition covers the last 150 years of style, leading the viewer through an interactive visual timeline.

Focussing on modern tastemakers, the museum has collected more than 20 outfits from some of the most iconic women in fashion today – model Naomi Campbell, architect Dame Zaha Hadid, Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo – exploring the ideas and style philosophies of each woman. One of the youngest participants, mechanical engineer and senior projects director at Argent LLP, Morwenna Wilson, is a prime example of the current generation continuing to break through the glass ceilings of the past. Alongside these outfits sits that iconic jade suit, secured on loan from its recent buyer. Another highlight is the original ‘Le Smoking’ suit designed by the late, great Yves Saint Laurent. “During the course of the twentieth century, women have gradually taken complete control over how they

dress,” says Loveday. “Prior to this, they had never had the freedom from rules and convention that they now enjoy. The twentieth century has seen a transformation in the status of many women in society and fashion has reflected those changing ideas and trends.” With the exhibition’s holistic approach to fashion, Loveday was keen to secure several participants who affect what we wear: featuring everyone from designers like Roksanda Ilincic and Charlotte Olympia, to iconic figures in the media, such as Hearst UK’s chief executive Anna Jones, and pioneering retailers including Joan Burstein and Natalie Massenet. Joan Burstein founded the South Molton Street favourite Browns in 1970, and has always been known for her sartorial courage and confidence. Her talent for spotting trends helped to launch many young designers’ careers as she is personally responsible for introducing several now-seminal brands into the UK market, including Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan and Missoni. Her risk-taking has paid off and she is still the current owner, influencing women’s choices and introducing them to new ones through what Browns offers. Net-a-Porter’s Natalie Massenet is also featured within the exhibition; credited with transforming internet shopping, her brand has single-handedly revolutionised the way women shop, allowing them access to luxury clothing and high fashion, previously denied to all but a few. Massenet is determined to continue her pioneering work in fashion, now sitting at the helm of the British Fashion Council.

FEATURE

Of course, fashion is also known for its causes and controversies; thanks to the media attention the industry now commands, fashion is a platform to speak out from, and successful women in the industry are taking to this world stage to promote issues they believe in. After launching the Green Carpet Challenge in 2009, participant Livia Firth has continually tried to raise the profile of sustainable fashion. Introducing a trademark standard for eco-clothing, her most recent success was Stella McCartney’s full Green Carpet collection and its launch was one of the most starstudded events of London Fashion Week in September. Meanwhile McCartney’s Meat-Free Mondays initiative, used her enviable profile to publicise the effects of meat consumption on global warming. And then there’s Vivienne Westwood, another participant who is not afraid to use her fashion status as leverage. Westwood often uses her catwalk shows to fight for her chosen causes, promoting slogans and political or environmental statements, and recently sent models down the runway wearing ‘Yes’ badges, in support of Scottish independence. “There is a new shift in dressing to express power and authority,” says Loveday. “The evolution of a new power dress code that moves away from avoiding mistakes, playing safe and following the rules.” Never mind not following the rules, women are

rewriting the rulebook altogether. As the glass ceiling continues to disintegrate, so too should the restrictions on women’s fashion choices. As Loveday says, it’s “a counterpoint to the idea that fashion restricts or enslaves women”. Sentiments the Iron Lady would surely approve of.

“The evolution of a new power dress code that moves away from avoiding mistakes, playing safe and following the rules”

A little Princess As part of Harrods’ own Biennale des Antiquaires – the legendary Parisian exhibition (now in its 27th year) will be recreated in the Fine Jewellery and Watch Rooms this month – London-based Swiss watchmaker Backes & Strauss has created a unique piece for the occasion in partnership with Gemfields. The timepiece honours both its heritage as the ‘Master of Diamonds’ as well as Gemfields’ legacy as the world’s leading ethical gemstone supplier. Christened the Harrods Princess, the watch has been set with exceptional Zambian emeralds and white diamonds. JEWELLERY

Jewels, gems, pearls and diamonds; essential components of any jewellery collection WORDS: OLIVIA SHARPE

Into the Groove

 On the Flip Side One seemingly unproductive afternoon when she was playing with some matchsticks, Cypriot designer Myriam Soseilos was suddenly struck with an idea of creating jewellery pieces which could move and adapt. From this, the Transformers collection (which won her the accolade of Designer of the Year 2013 at the Treasure jewellery show) was born. Comprising bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings, each piece has a simple, geometric design inspired by modern architecture. The aptly-named Rubik’s Cube ring features sides made up of different coloured precious gemstones which can be swivelled around to create a multi-faceted effect. The designer’s latest Naked Square collection explores the “grammar of shapes” and turns any preconceptions of classic diamond jewellery on their head by combining traditional materials with cutting-edge designs. D MyriamSOS, available at Wolf & Badger, wolfandbadger.com

Cutting Edge  To celebrate Antoni Gaudi’s birthday which took place earlier this year, fine jeweller D’Joya has created 25 pieces, 20 of which are on display and five are bespoke commissions, inspired by the pioneering artist and his most famous works:

“Antoni Gaudi was a visionary, a tour de force, a creative genius and an inspiration… The collection pays homage to this celebrated Catalan modernist, who transformed buildings in Barcelona into glittering works of art. His decorative approach to ceramics, ironwork and stained glass evolved into a distinctive aesthetic that still enthralls today”

Piaget is commemorating its 140th anniversary by creating a collection of 88 jewellery pieces and 37 watches based around its halcyon days in the 60s and 70s, regarded as a stellar period in the company’s creative history. Christened Extremely Piaget, the bold designs play with asymmetry and stylisation, and colour plays a prominent role. Noteworthy pieces include an oval jade dial timepiece set with diamonds and emeralds (modelled on the Piaget watch created in 1965 and owned by Jackie Kennedy) and a pink gold mesh necklace with turquoise beads and diamonds that pays tribute to Piaget’s ‘golden era’ of jewellery making. D Extremely Piaget collection, from a selection (piaget.com)

Two Birds, One Stone Arguably the most important event in the jewellery calendar, the Biennale des Antiquaires recently took place in Paris and once again, it did not disappoint. One of the most talked-about pieces on display there was this Bird Cage clock by Chanel, a beautiful interpretation of a miniature jewellery birdcage found in Coco Chanel’s 31 Rue Cambon apartment. Those of you who had the misfortune to miss the event will now be given an opportunity to see some of its finest pieces at Harrods; the department store will be hosting its own exclusive rendition this month. Nine of the official Biennale brands – including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chanel and Dior – will present a selection of their most show-stopping pieces. D harrods.com

On the up T

As Astley Clarke takes America by storm with the launch of several US stockists, Olivia Sharpe catches up with founder Bec Astley Clarke MBE to find out how it feels to be the next big British luxury export

his summer, both Cameron Diaz and her co-star Kate Upton were spotted wearing Astley Clarke jewellery. The fact that celebrities are wearing pieces by the jeweller is not astonishing in itself, with Poppy Delevingne and Alexa Chung having long been fans of the brand. However, in this particular instance, it is hardly a coincidence. In September, the British brand launched into 11 branches of luxury department store Neiman Marcus, spanning across Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles and Atlanta, as well as neimanmarcus. com. This marks the next chapter in Astley Clarke’s US expansion, having earlier this year entered into six Saks Fifth Avenue stores. Back in London, I meet founder and chairman Bec in the place where it all began, her west London boutique, just a few months before the launch. Her excitement about the prospect of being stocked in America is immediately

evident as she explains why Astley Clarke is the perfect fit for the US: “I think the brand is really resonating over there. I’ve been on three or four visits this year to San Francisco, New York, Dallas and Florida, doing whistle-stop tours. They’re going nuts over the Biography bracelets and have fallen in love with the lockets.” Looking at Bec, it’s not as though she needs high-profile supporters to promote her brand. With her casual and laidback style – she is dressed in a tank top and jeans, with the same locket as Diaz wore placed conspicuously around her neck and her signature Biography bracelets adorning her arm – and welcoming manner, she epitomises her brand. The concept of Astley Clarke was always very simple; to create fine

jewellery for professional women. The business launched in 2006 and its founder already had an impressive background in fashion, tech and marketing; with her new multi-brand e-tailer concept, she set out to prove the profitability of selling jewellery online, in the same way that sites such as Net-a-Porter and The Outnet have shown such demand in fashion. And she certainly seems to have done that. Astley Clarke’s sales are projected at 30 per cent growth year-on-year and sales figures are predicted to reach roughly £6.2 million this year. Bec was also made an MBE in the Queen’s 2013 Honours List for her services to the jewellery industry. While this is undoubtedly an incredible achievement, Bec ensures she stays grounded with the help of her three-year-old son, Thor: “After I told my son about the award, he said, ‘mummy, Peppa Pig gave Rebecca Rabbit an MBE yesterday’. I thought to myself, I’m not nearly as busy as Rebecca Rabbit is so if she gets one, then it must be good”, she says, smiling. Bec is delighted in the interest she has been getting from the likes of Diaz and Upton who, in her mind, represent what Astley Clarke is all about. “Cameron Diaz is bang on in terms of our target client. She is an intelligent, professional woman with independent means who is fashion forward but not too fashion-obsessed,” she explains. “She has a casual sense of style but can also do glam, so you can totally see her on the red carpet in a pair of our Fao blue topaz earrings or on the beach wearing all of the Biography bracelets.” For Bec, this “informal way of wearing precious jewellery” has proved a winning formula in America, not to mention the fact that they “love all things British”. The jewellery entrepreneur’s previous experience working for online companies such as iVillage.com and tesco.com has undeniably stood her in good stead. She felt that many luxury brands hadn’t realised the internet’s

full potential so she decided to redress this balance by launching Astley Clarke solely as an online retailer. Bec is a firm believer that the 21st century luxury consumer should be able to shop in any way they wish, whether in store or online, and with people’s lives becoming more and more fast-paced, she notes that it is the latter which is increasingly becoming the preferred option. “I love the web and am a great believer in it. We have 30,000 social media followers and we use the web to tell our story.” After the award-winning success of the UK and US websites, Bec realised it was time to start selling in brick-and-mortar stores too; Astley Clarke is currently stocked in Harrods, Liberty and Selfridges in the UK, along with its new US retailers. The founder acknowledges how the company started back to front in comparison to most other businesses which begin with high street retailers but this she believes is all part of its unique identity. “It’s very much a cool part of our overall strategy. We started off with all the mod cons and now we’re opening old fashioned retailers. I think that’s just the way our clients like to shop; they either like to come into the boutique, pop into Harrods or buy something quickly online. We give them the choice.” Bec has always been passionate about jewellery. One of her favourite childhood memories is delving into her grandmother’s jewellery boxes filled with semi-precious and precious stones. It was then that she discovered her love of coloured gemstones. When the brand opened its design studio in 2009, situated above the boutique, Bec hired Lorna Watson – who taught fine jewellery at Central Saint Martins for 15 years and is a member of Goldsmiths Hall – as creative director. Together, she, Bec and the rest of the design team work tirelessly to make sure each piece is meticulously made. “It’s fascinating to watch just what goes into making the pieces, beginning with a hand-drawn image done to scale and then evolving from there.” Bec’s team occasionally uses modern-day technology such as CAD design but will predominantly rely on traditional techniques because Lorna wishes for all the pieces to retain “a natural quality about them so each

collection

piece speaks for itself and doesn’t look over-treated”. The company recently released a film revealing the processes which went into creating the popular Fao collection, which is named after Bec’s grandmother. Indeed, so much of Astley Clarke relates back to the founder’s family heritage, and I’m not just referring to the name. It’s been well documented that Bec’s grandfather, Sir Cyril Astley Clarke’s genetic experiments with butterflies – which led him to discover the preventative treatment for rhesus haemolytic disease of newborn babies and whose extensive butterfly collection is currently housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum – has had a profound influence on Bec who has paid homage to the butterfly by making it an iconic symbol of her brand. She also hopes to pass down her love of jewellery to her two children and has already marked down some of her most treasured pieces to them. “I have a little D for my daughter Delilah and a little T for Thor. We used to make children’s Biography bracelets and so Delilah also has the little rainbow one. Even though he’s a boy Thor loves it as well. You know how little children love things in boxes; they find them so intriguing.” For A/W14, Astley Clarke has updated its Biography collection to include new colours, precious gemstones and charms. The team builds on each collection season after season and this has proven an excellent merchandising strategy, as clients are able to constantly update their collections. This season the key shade is violet berry, which incidentally happens to be the Pantone Colour of the Year. Bec comments: “Lorna and I have this ongoing joke that the industry must be following us!”

As Christmas draws closer, Astley Clarke will be releasing new diamond pieces too which Bec predicts will be extremely popular, pointing out a beautiful starburst eternity ring featuring interlocking stars. Although Astley Clarke’s philosophy has always centred on women buying jewellery for themselves, this doesn’t mean to say that they don’t have a huge male client base. As such they offer the service of personal shoppers at the boutique to help advise men on gifts for girlfriends and wives and can also visit them at their offices during lunch hours if they’re too busy to visit the store. Despite growing up in Islington, Bec has always gravitated towards west London and this is why she not only chose to have her studio based here but also her home. Saying that, with Bec constantly travelling to and from America, I cannot help but wonder whether a move might be on the horizon. While she jokes how she absolutely cannot discuss that as her husband has categorically said they’re not moving, I hope that, for once, the man gets his way.

“The Astley Clarke woman is intelligent, professional and independent, with casual style”

the World’s Most Famous Watch: up for auction 

To Rolex What AMG is to Mercedes-Benz  Conceived by Kamal Choraria, the man who devised the system by which vintage Rolexes are classified, Pro Hunter has been modifying the world’s most recognisable watches for more than a decade. The company adds antireflective ‘diamond-like-carbon’ coating to brand new Rolexes, changing the colours of date discs, dials and pearls. The Phantom collection is the latest addition to the Pro Hunter portfolio; a super matte black finish is applied to Daytonas, Deepseas and Submariner Dates. Customers can choose to add black carbon casing, bezels and lumes, and from a bracelet and military Nato strap. Pro Hunter only modifies 100 examples of each Rolex model. Manage to secure one and you’ll join a list of owners that includes Bill Clinton, Orlando Bloom and the Crown Prince of Greece. ONE TO WATCH This month Sandy Madhvani, Showroom Manager at David M Robinson in Canary Wharf, selects his watch of the moment:

“A robust 41mm steel case with a refined finish, a coloured, anodised aluminium crown tube and well-made interchangeable bracelets make Tudor’s Heritage Black Bay perhaps the best watch in its price bracket”

It’s considered the Holy Grail of watchmaking and remains one of the most complex devices ever crafted by the human hand. Now, nearly nine decades after New York banking supremo Henry Graves commissioned Patek Philippe to create the world’s most complicated timepiece, which was eight years in the making, the Henry Graves Supercomplication is going up for auction. The watch boasts a staggering 24 functions, including a perpetual calendar, a two-faced moon phase, sunset and sunrise indicators, a chart of the New York sky and a minute repeater that chimes the tolls of Big Ben. When the watch was last sold, it fetched more than £6.4 million. It’s due for auction at Sotheby’s in Geneva this November. Estimates are around £10 million.

Flying Colours  Following the Victory and the Codebreaker – the former incorporating original oak from HMS Victory and the latter pine from Bletchley Park – Bremont’s next limited edition timepiece was always going to have to be something special to live up to expectations. And we’re pleased to report that the brand hasn’t disappointed us. Launched at an appropriately lofty bash at the Science Museum, the Wright Flyer makes use of fabric from the first ever powered aircraft of the same name. Just as significantly, the watch uses Bremont’s first ever unique movement, part-developed and designed in Britain. Now, how are the English brothers going to follow that? D bremont.com

EY is launching a unique start-up challenge, which will be hosted at Canary Wharf’s accelerator tech space Level39. It will put six start-ups to the task of finding business-savvy solutions to the implications of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) summit – for example, handling data capture and erasure. Small Change The small business model may not be the cornerstone of Canary Wharf’s success, but selfemployment in the UK now makes up 15 per cent of the total workforce – its highest level since records began almost 40 years ago. This equates to 4.6 million people, according to a report by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), with the most common jobs including taxi-driving and construction. It’s good news for those who want flexibility and to be their own boss, but there’s a flip side: on average, according to the ONS, those who are self-employed have faced a 22 per cent fall in real pay since 2008. The question ‘Can we have it all?’ has both encouraged and disillusioned workers for years. What is ‘it all’, should you have it, and if you don’t then who does? Stewart D. Friedman’s Leading The Life You Want takes on the ‘misguided metaphor’ of the ‘work/life balance’. A professor at the Wharton School of Business, he argues that people need to integrate their job with the rest of their lives, rather than see it as competing for their time. He suggests that if you integrate the two successfully, it will boost your personal

and professional accomplishments – plus he shares the skills for doing so. More career strategy than self-help book, it may just pacify the morning commute. hat could you do in 14 years? Travel the world? Renovate a house? Hell, it only took them four years to film the entire The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This may seem like a hypothetical question, but it is one that your male colleague may be asking himself one day, following a report by the Chartered Management Institution (CMI), which found that a female manager would have to work an extra 14 years over her lifetime to earn the same as her male counterpart.

they see fewer role models or they feel they have other choices they can make.” These issues compound until those at the top of the pyramid lose out the most. The pay gap is at its greatest for female managers aged over 45, and as a senior level pay cheque is bumped up considerably by bonuses, it’s worth noting that a male director’s average bonus is £53,010, while for women it’s £41,956. At this point the culture shift between entry and top level jobs is at its most apparent: whereas at entry level, 70 per cent of managers are women, this completely flips over higher up

“A male director’s average bonus is £53,010, while for women it’s £41,956”

Anne Francke, CEO at CMI – the only chartered body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership – is challenging this discrepancy: “What we advocate at CMI is that companies measure the percentage of women at every level and monitor what they’re paid versus men. This is information every company has, and companies who do this openly don’t tend to have pay gaps.” Typically, the shape women’s pay follows can be represented by a pyramid. At entrylevel jobs, women populate the workforce and the pay gap is at its smallest at six per cent. However, the presence of women and equality between pay cheques tapers out as you move up into the senior ranks. “As these women progress they drop out, and motherhood actually is not the culprit. A lot of these women are leaving these positions because they feel uncomfortable as they rise up the ladder and they look to the culture. They feel it doesn’t speak to them or

the ladder, where 70 per cent of senior management roles are occupied by men. “Although it’s great that we’ve made the progress we have with women on boards, we have not made similar progress with women in executive positions and it is the executives who are running the day-to-day operations of a company, deciding things like salaries and bonuses, and who are managing the talent pipeline. That’s where we need to see more women – and more men – stepping up to be role models for women.” The onus is on women themselves, too: “Women should keep a catalogue of their achievements, express them in numerical terms, e.g. ‘I brought on Y number of new clients’, and in any negotiation that involves yourself or your prospects, have it to hand. “Yes, there are challenges that women face in the workplace, but if you take the responsibility, as a woman, for your own career progress you’ll fare a lot better in breaking through those challenges.”

speaking up… …Karen Jones, Founder and CEO of Citywealth discusses why, for women, sponsorship beats mentoring every time

H

elping women to achieve their true potential within the work place is a subject particularly close to my heart, as I have myself experienced numerous obstacles to set up my own company Citywealth – a publishing and events company that connects UHNW individuals and their wealth managers. I also run the Women in Wealth Supper Club – a femaleonly networking event that runs four times a year, where senior women in wealth management meet in informal surroundings and listen to inspirational speakers. However, as Dr Alexandra Beauregard, professor in Employment Relations at the LSE pointed out to the distinguished guests during the first Citywealth Power Women Lunch last January, a distinction needs to be made between a mentor and a sponsor. Though 59.79 per cent of organisations within the wealth sector run mentoring programmes for women – as revealed by the first ever Survey on Gender and Diversity within the Wealth Sector – mentors simply advise, while sponsors act.

“Sponsors will often be picked for their business achievements” Sponsors will often be picked for their business achievements and deliver by making employees under their charge visible to leaders within the company and to top people outside. Sponsors connect people to career opportunities and provide cover when they encounter internal trouble. When it comes to opening doors, sponsors don’t stop with one promotion, they see through to the threshold of power. Successful sponsorship programmes will usually have a performance timeline very much like annual HR initiatives or departmental goals. As Sheryl Sandberg said in her best-selling book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead: “The more

women help one another, the more we help ourselves. Acting like a coalition truly does produce results.” Wary of any ‘us and them’ mentality, Sandberg notes that “any coalition of support must also include men, many of whom care about gender inequality as much as women do.” Mounting evidence suggests that mentoring programmes help women by stopping them feeling isolated in business, but fail to help women get promoted. This is because mentors are often picked for their caring and people skills rather than business successes. This means women may be coached by the wrong type of person if career development is the key driver. I would recommend that it’s time to re-evaluate mentoring programmes and turn them into sponsorship programmes. This is one of the messages I’ll be delivering at my next Power Women Summit taking place 22 – 23 January 2015. It will include leading advice from professors at the LSE and dynamic key note speakers. The debate is open to help this topic forward.

WHO RUNS THE

WORLD From trail-blazing political analysts to empire-building entrepreneurs, meet ten women who are proving that it’s no longer a man’s world WORDS: Elle Blakeman

CANARY WHARF | 63

THE GAME CHANGER Monique Villa, CEO of the Thomson Reuters Foundation; founder of TrustLaw and Trust Women “If we want men to share power with women they have to have good reasons for that,” says Monique Villa. “There are plenty of good reasons and there are plenty of men who are aware of these: it’s a very good business decision to have women in your management team because very often they bring something that others don’t.” The head of Reuters news agency when Thomson acquired the company, Villa was asked to preside over the new Thomson Reuters Foundation, giving a new direction to the charity that had previously been focused on training journalists and issuing small humanitarian grants. “It was a blank page which I love. I was not too impressed with our impact of the grants, so very quickly I decided that we would stop doing those and instead try to create services that could help people in a bigger way. “Now we have one very big flagship programme, TrustLaw, which is something I created four years ago to spread the practice of pro bono worldwide, pairing up lawyers with NGOs and social enterprise. “I was advised not to go immediately global but to start with a few countries, but I’ve always been totally global, so I said ‘No, we’ll go everywhere and we’ll see’”. Villa’s instinct proved correct and, in just four years, TrustLaw now has more than 2,000 members, operating in 170 countries, and has helped NGOs receive more

than $35 million worth of legal advice. While doing this, Villa came across recurring themes about women’s rights that stirred her into further action. “We started to cover women’s rights issues the day I read a statistic that said worldwide, women spend 90 per cent of their salary on their family. So we need to help women get jobs, because then you start to really tackle the root of poverty, because the children will be better educated, better fed etc. Very quickly, I was invited to all these women’s conferences which were all very interesting, but often more of a talk show than a call for action. So I decided to create our conference – Trust Women – that we launched in December 2012, and which has quickly become huge, because it’s one place where you really take action, and big action.”

“It’s a very good business decision to have women in your management team” Big action indeed – the first conference set out to tackle the almost overwhelmingly huge issue of slavery and trafficking, one that despite being a $150 billion industry has gone largely uncovered in mainstream media. “It’s very, very big business, so if you want to tackle this monstrous crime, you have to find financial ways to do it. In the first conference, we created this working group of all the biggest banks in the US to convince them to look at the credit card data of their clients and discover when there is a pattern of trafficking. “We also worked with the biggest NGOs in the US to establish the red flags that could show a pattern of human trafficking, which the banks then agreed to incorporate into their software. It worked, and now it is a big arm against human trafficking. That was just one action, we had many more and on many different issues so the conference has become a real movement now. “Next month sees the third conference, which will bring together 600 delegates from banks, corporations and law firms all over the world, all working together to put the rule of law behind women’s rights globally. “I have many big ambitions. The more we can shed light on what’s happening, the more it will be a call for action. Information is key.’ Spoken like a true journalist. The advocate Pavani Reddy, managing partner, Zaiwalla & Co Solicitors LLP “Taboos and stereotypes are breaking down. People don’t seem to hold those outdated views that a woman’s place is only in the home. Families encourage women to have a work/life balance – the best of both worlds.” Breaking through barriers is nothing new to Pavani Reddy. As the managing partner of Zaiwalla & Co Solicitors LLP, she is the first Asian woman to achieve this senior role in an Indian law firm in London. Known in the industry as an expert in arbitration, her CV also boasts a client list featuring the President of India and the Dalai Lama to name but a few.

“Mentors and role models are critical in helping women to manage their career” Reddy credits her admirable achievements, in part, to the support she received both from her parents and her boss Sarosh Zaiwalla, the senior partner at Zaiwalla & Co Solicitors: “He has always encouraged me and given me the opportunities to prove myself in the legal field.” It established her belief that mentorship is key for progression: “Many women at the outset of their career lack clarity of direction and purpose, which results in less ambition and expectation. Mentors and role models are often critical in helping women to manage their career.” Well, that and a dose of tenacity: “My drive to establish a career in the legal field was so intense that the negativity or low moments that came my way only strengthened my resolve to succeed.”

The ANALYST Tina Fordham, MD, chief political analyst, Citi Research “The advice I really give to people is what Churchill said: Never surrender. If you think everyone is against you, you will stop doing it. You have to tune out your detractors, focus on your supporters and just keep going.” Named as one of the ‘Top 100 Most Influential Women in Finance’ and one of the ‘Top 19 Economists on Wall Street’, Fordham has played a key role in investment research, pioneering a political science-based approach to the field. “The thing that I value about my role is the opportunity to help people understand and make decisions in a complex environment. I don’t think my advice for young women [wanting to follow this path] is different from young men really because it’s a tough industry: it’s very competitive, the hours are long, you can’t have it all and you definitely can’t have it all at once. I think if you want to do something, then you do have to ‘lean in’, put your hand up and not wait for somebody to give you the opportunity. “It may be that there are more obstacles for women than men; there probably are, but if I stop to think about them, I would not be in this position. Basically, I think that kind of wilful denial is pretty useful. I’m sure I have my detractors. I just ignore them.”

The GLOBE TROTTER Monica Vinader, Founder and CEO of Monica Vinader “I think you’ve either got it or you haven’t,” says Monica Vinader, speaking of the entrepreneurial trait that has taken her business from a concept at her family dinner table to the best-selling jewellery brand at Harrods. “My parents had their own business and I was very involved from an early age, so I knew what it was to grow a business. My mother always worked really hard while I

amount of conviction? “Absolutely, I was convinced we were on the right track and I was confident in our abilities. I think confidence is one of the great things in business – you need it to succeed. I don’t think I notice a difference between the confidence of men and women in my office – they are all very ambitious, which is great. I

“For me, the best encouragement is to see good role models around you – the more successful women at the top to look up to, the better” was growing up, so I think I always saw that work ethic. “Being an entrepreneur is not easy, and setting up your own business is, of course, not without risk. I knew I needed a good partner and managed to convince my sister to join me, as we have very complementary skill sets. I would definitely advise anyone wanting to set up on their own to find a good partner they can trust and work closely with.” Monica set up her eponymous business in 2008, against a backdrop of global recession: “We kept trying to get funding, but our meetings with potential investors just came to an end and we had to take a loan against the family house. In a way it was great as it motivated us and gave us the chance to have a really great Christmas – because the markets had crashed, there was a real appetite for beautiful but affordable jewellery.” Still, betting on the family home must have taken a fair

think self-assurance is critical to get by in a working environment, whether you are male or female. However, I would certainly like to see a culture grow that values self-assured, confident women. There are still lots of stereotypes of ambitious working women out there! “For me, the best encouragement is to see good role models around you – the more successful women at the top to look up to, the better. Seeing how others have managed to succeed in a particular industry is very empowering. I’m always conscious of being a good role model for my daughter, as my mother was for me. “There are an increasing number of women in high-profile positions, be it in finance or fashion, which is encouraging to see. I hope it gives young women the inspiration and confidence to push themselves forward in business and realise that if this is what they want, they can go for it.”

THE beauty queen Bobbi Brown, founder and Chief Creative Officer of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics “I really believe that all women are beautiful without make-up,” says Bobbi Brown, who launched her own cosmetics line in 1991, after becoming frustrated with the lack of natural-looking lipsticks while working as a make-up artist. Today, her name is synonymous with effortless New York-style glamour and her products are now sold in more than 1,730 stores in 68 countries. “Confidence is the most important ingredient in looking and feeling pretty. But confidence doesn’t always come naturally or easily; I believe that with the right tools and knowledge, make-up can help women look and feel like their most confident selves.” A strong supporter of women, Brown has underlined this message of self-confidence and empowerment not only through her products, but also through her philanthropic work (which is vast) and her campaigns, including the recent Pretty Powerful campaign. “In 2010, I started a campaign that celebrates the beauty of real women from a variety of backgrounds – my friends, neighbours, co-workers, amazing women I’d met on the street – through their inspiring stories, photos and videos. I wanted to show women that there isn’t just one definition of beauty. The campaign is about being comfortable in your own skin, knowing what’s important to you and doing what makes you happy.”

“I wanted to show women that there isn’t just one definition of beauty” As her brand is focused on enhancing, rather than changing, the way women look, does Brown feel there is anything to the ‘war paint’ concept – using a swipe of scarlet lipstick or a strong black eyeliner to steel yourself for a tough day ahead? “I believe that make-up is a way for a woman to look and feel like herself, only prettier and more confident,” says Brown. “Rather than trying to change or distort a woman’s features, I use make-up to enhance the features that make her unique. Bobbi Brown make-up isn’t about rules, it’s about options, and this is something that I think all women appreciate.” “When you feel good about yourself, there’s no limit to what you can do – and that’s pretty powerful. My goal when I first started this company was to make women feel better about themselves – and I plan on doing that for as long as I can.”

The serial entrepreneur Inge Theron, founder of Face Gym “The harder you work the luckier you get,” says Inge Theron, the FT’s glamorous ‘Spa Junkie’ and founder of Face Gym. “I think you’ve got to dream: you have to visualise and have the confidence to follow your dream – not that it’s always easy of course.” Theron’s dreams have led her to some fairly incredible places, and she has gone from working in radio, film and TV, to celebrity journalism and later PR, which led to inventing a ‘Hollywood’ board game, naturally, rather cleverly in the recession of 2008, when staying in became the new going out; this last venture left her with enough resources to go and follow her ultimate dream of travelling round spas and retreats for a year. “I decided to take a year off after Hollywood Domino, as I was wondering what to do next. I felt burnt out and a bit lost so I decided to travel – I went to China, India, Germany… I went to Thailand several times, I fasted for 30 days, I didn’t speak for 10 days, it was all about gaining new experiences. “I was offered the chance to come back to PR but I was done; I enjoyed it but I didn’t want to go back. I remember talking to my mum and she said: ‘What do you want to do?’, and I said: ‘I don’t know, I just want to spend the rest of my life in a spa!’ She said: ‘Well do that then’. “I thought: ‘Don’t be ridiculous! I can’t spend my life in a spa!’ but then I said to myself: ‘Well, why can’t I?’ “When I came back to London I met Gillian [Tett, an assistant editor at the Financial Times], and she asked

“You don’t just have to be confident, you have to be fearless: play big or go home” what I was up to; I told her that I was literally just a spa junkie at the moment and wasn’t sure what to do and she suggested writing a column for the FT.’ Now firmly back in London, Theron is still writing her cult-status Spa Junkie column and has set up the new Face Gym at Selfridges, helping women to delay or even give up Botox, by training facial muscles to stay in place for longer. So, as someone who has managed to squeeze several careers into a working lifetime, what advice would Theron give to future entrepreneurs? “You have to work out where you want to be and then work backwards so you can get there. I visualise, and it’s really helped things to happen for me. “You don’t just have to be confident, you have to be fearless: play big or go home. At each point in my career I’ve had no experience, I’d never been a writer or TV before I worked in them – I just throw myself in and kind of have to swim back!”

The banker Susan Allen, chief executive, Customer Solutions Group, Corporate Banking Division, RBS “Being good enough is not good enough,” says Susan Allen. “When I joined RBS 25 years ago, I thought I joined a meritocracy. It took me about five or six years to realise that as well as delivering, you need to stand out and put yourself forward. You need to volunteer and profile the things that you are doing – building awareness of your capabilities. “The gender gap didn’t really occur to me when I joined the bank – there were lots of women around when I started, but as I started to climb the ladder I began to ask myself ‘Where have all the women gone?’.” It was this realisation that led Allen to get involved with the launch of the Focused Women’s Network in 2007, to support RBS in actively attracting, and developing talented female staff, and which today has more than 12,000 members. “We do need to look at why more women are not getting to the top. Confidence is an issue, women need to be willing to put themselves forward. “Women also need to take responsibility for their own careers; we can’t expect our bosses to be psychic. So many of the women I coach are not good at expressing what they want, they think that if they work hard their boss will know they are ambitious, but they won’t. It’s your responsibility to have those conversations. “RBS is hugely supportive of women in the workplace, but it’s not altruistic, we want to support women because it’s better for the business. There are plenty of studies that show the more balanced your team is, you get more balanced decisions, as you get a better debate and a better challenge.”

“Women also need to take responsibility for their own career” THE experimenter Katriona Methven, director of scientific and technical-regulatory affairs, L’Oréal UK & Ireland “I think having strong female role models is important. I’ve found working at L’Oréal, being surrounded by so many senior women has been very inspiring. 64 per cent of employees at L’Oréal UK are female and in the global research and innovation team 70 per cent are women, so I think the company is certainly doing something right to ensure women feel confident and successful in their careers.” “In science, women of all ages are challenged by a very male stereotype and lack of female role models, particularly in areas such as physics, maths and engineering. We certainly need to work at identifying and celebrating leading women in science, particularly for young girls to aspire to. “I have also seen the challenges young women face at the early stage of their research careers where permanent jobs are hard to come by and – for those with children – flexible support for

childcare is hard to find.” Eight years ago, noting the different challenges that faced women in science, L’Oréal UK established a local version of the L’Oréal UNESCO For Women In Science awards. The objective was to try to address these issues,

“We certainly need to work on identifying and celebrating our leading women in science” awarding four early career researchers with grants of £15,000 which they could spend on anything that would help their career, be it equipment or childcare. So what advice would she have for encouraging the next generation of women in science? “Seek out role models and people who can inspire you, and persevere. Don’t give up at the first hurdle. Keep your mission in mind and learn from your experiences. Finally, experiment. My children will both receive chemistry sets for Christmas this year!”

THE ATHLETE Victoria Pendleton CBE, Olympic cycling gold medallist “I think so many women are scared of giant challenges, because they’re scared of failing in some way. We hate failing for some reason. There’s nothing wrong with just giving something a try and giving something your best shot, because you never know it might just work out.” The double Olympic gold medallist has just returned from a trip to Ghana with Galaxy and (RED) to help promote access to HIV testing, treatment and counselling for pregnant women. “Having the opportunity to meet women who work within and around this charity was very inspirational. “By the very nature of it there is a lot of women involved – with the campaigning, with the support, with everything – so it is very female-focussed, and that is important to me; I’m all for powerful, successful women.” Of course, Pendleton is no stranger to this brand of female: being one of the only women to train with the all-male elite Great Britain Cycling Team, going on to win nine World Champion titles, two Olympic Gold medals and one Silver one: “I was in very much a male team during my training. I was the only female sprinting, so

for me I was looking at my male counterparts and they were all very successful – multiple world champions, all of them – but they were always very supportive and shared advice and input which encouraged me.” So how do you cope with being a woman in a world as male-dominated as sport? “It’s definitely better than it used to be in terms of opportunity, but I still think there’s more to be done. But it’s a cultural change, not something that will happen overnight. “It is changing slowly and surely; in my lifetime within the sport I’ve brought up the equality issue because there used to be a different number of events available for men and women, which seemed a bit like ‘Hang on a minute! I’ve trained just as much and I’ve only got one opportunity and he’s got three!’ “I think the success of the women at the Olympics definitely opened people’s eyes to what could be achieved. And women should really aspire to jobs within sport, not just as athletes but as coaches, marketers, managers, everything involved with sport. There needs to be more women involved at every level.” D (Galaxy)RED chocolate is on sale now, with 5p from each pack going to The Global Fund to help ensure that more mothers can give birth to babies born without HIV. “The success of the women at the Olympics definitely opened people’s eyes” THE style guru Sarah Hogan, stylist and founder of Sarah Hogan Styling & Wardrobe Management “Dressing well makes the most enormous difference to your confidence,” says Sarah Hogan, who runs her own styling business and dresses everyone from CEOs to famous actors to full-time mums. “We have been donning armour since the Dark Ages; my job is to help women arm themselves for whatever battle they are going into, whether it’s the boardroom or meeting the mother-in-law, it’s about feeling good. “I started my own business when I realised that a lot of ‘stylists’ were actually only helping women to buy more stuff, which was leading to more clutter, and therefore chaos, which inevitably left women feeling like they had ‘nothing to wear’ – despite having an overstuffed wardrobe of clothes.

“I wanted to help explore and develop women’s style, editing and cleansing their closets and really getting to the bottom of buying habits and the emotional relationship with how they look. I also recommend that all my clients take a make-up lesson and see my hair team and nutritionist – I wanted to start a full service that really helps women feel like the best version of themselves. “I love the annual review time – my clients are always told that they are ‘more memorable’, ‘have really come into their own’, or are ‘more punctual and organised in the mornings’. It’s great to hear how much more confident people are once they have got their style together.” So how should we dress for the office?

“I think it’s important to retain your femininity in the workplace and let it make you stand out; we shouldn’t try to emulate men. When you see a woman assertively embracing her femininity, especially in a male environment, it is a very powerful thing.” D sarahhoganstylist.com

in women

More and more high-net worth woman are turning angel investor and backing the next generation of businesswomen. Jennifer Hill speaks to them and the entrepreneurs they have financed

D

uring the property boom of the early noughties, former West-End client services director Nicola Norris found an outlet for her entrepreneurial spark by renovating derelict properties on her home turf of Merseyside and Lancashire. When she later fell pregnant with her daughter, Marla (now three), it gave her the impetus to start her latest business venture, Bibee, a maternity clothing company for the professional mum-to-be. “I worked throughout my pregnancy in a senior clientfacing role, and nine months is a lot of days to dress smartly when none of your clothes fit,” she says. “I decided that I needed to design a flattering and luxurious maternity dress with interchangeable dress fronts. If I could attach a black cowl-neck front one day and then change it to a patterned V-neck the next, I wouldn’t feel I was wearing the same dress every day.” The design is patent protected and also functions as a dress for breast-feeding mothers. The company launched last February and Norris, 37,

“Women are just as successful as men these days and have so much to bring as investors” and her husband, a 35-year-old project manager, have sunk all of their savings into the business and, alongside a little help from family, have invested £130,000.

They have recently moved from their two-bed flat in Kentish Town, north London, to a 3,000 square foot house in Chislehurst, south-east London, to accommodate the growing business, which Norris regards as her second child. Bibee has just closed its seed round, raising a similar sum from seven female angels in Gabriel Investors, a female angel network in the North East of England, which initially travelled to London to meet with Norris. The funds will be used to help develop Bibee’s online presence, bibeedresses.co.uk, and expand its product range into tunics and, from next spring, trousers. For the businesswoman, it has been a long process and a steep learning curve. “I was nearly always pitching to men,” she said. “Some men got it, many didn’t understand the problem I was solving and others looked horrified when I mentioned the word ‘breast’. “I realised after six months of pitching that if I was going to get funded with smart money – people who understood the product and could really help me grow the business – I needed to find women investors.”

Catalyst for growth A growing band of women are getting involved in angel investing. “Rightly so,” said Norris. “Women are just as successful as men these days and have so much to bring as investors.” When Anna Sofat, founder and managing director of Bloomsbury-based Addidi, a wealth adviser for highearning women, established Addidi Angels in 2009, trying to recruit members was “like climbing mount Everest”. “It was a totally new concept for women and required a level of time which many found difficult to commit,” says Sofat. She managed to recruit 17 female angels, herself included, in the first 18 months. Numbers have grown steadily over the past five years, with the network now boasting some 35 women investors. She believes the launch of female-focused business initiatives have acted as a catalyst for growth. The £12.5 million government-backed Aspire Fund, for example, was launched in 2008 to invest in businesses led by

FEATURE

women. The fund makes equity investments of between £100,000 and £1 million on a co-investment basis with private investors and has invested £4.7 million to date. “Today there are also a number of small groups which are women focused – such as Gabriel Investors in Newcastle and Angel Academy in London – which have helped raised awareness of angel investing and are making it more accessible,” added Sofat.

“Success and failure are synonymous; for every success story there will be several that didn’t make” Delhi-born Sofat has personally backed nine businesses to date – some of them, though not all, female owned and run. Her first investment, in April 2010, was in specialist lingerie business Bluebella, founded by Oxford graduate Emily Bendell, 33, in 2006. “I took a university summer job in an Ann Summers store and spotted a gap in the market for luxury, provocative lingerie that was still affordable and accessible,” said Bendell. “I realised woman had evolved and wanted beautiful, elegant, sensuous lingerie whatever their budget.” Bluebell, based in Chiswick, west London, now boasts a multi-million pound turnover and has grown threefold in the last two years. It has attracted three rounds of investment over the past four-anda-half years, all of them involving female investors. “I was very keen to have some female investment,” said Bendell, who lives in Bethnal Green, east London. “Bluebella is all about empowering women, plus I knew women would more instinctively understand my brand and what I was trying to achieve. “When I first went out to angel networks back in 2009 I thought: where are all the women? I had to create my own event in order to meet them. Since then, things have improved but women are still massively underrepresented in the angel community.”

Investing back Subsequent investments for Sofat include Curar, a femalerun business converting human medical technology for animals, and Loco2, a part female-owned business selling railway tickets across Europe. However, not all investments have been successful. Cupcakemum, a spa for mothers and children, received an injection of £100,000 from Addidi in 2010, but went into liquidation in 2011. “Success and failure are synonymous; for every success story there will be several that didn’t make it. The risks are high so some failure is a must,” said Sofat, who launched Addidi Talent, a female mentoring and non-executive director talent service for small business, in March. Despite failures, she believes enterprising women have much to gain from backing the next generation. “Angel investing allows me to connect with something real – meeting entrepreneurs and hearing their stories – and has taught me about different businesses and sectors; I’ve grown as a person,” she said. “There’s also a real good feel factor. I’m using my money to make a financial return, but also doing some good – investing back into our business community.” Far left: Anna Sofat from Addidi Wealth. Left: Emily Bendall. Over 5,000 people attended over the course of the weekend and over 100 signed up for public art tours. Canary Wharf boasts one of the UK’s largest public art collections, including free year-round visual art exhibitions by leading artists. The Hackney Carriages Disney Breakfast Success It was another successful year for The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers and their annual Magical Taxi Tour which is one of London’s most unique charity campaigns. On the 12 September 2014 Canary Wharf Group hosted the 21st Hackney Carriages Disney Breakfast at East Wintergarden for both children and helpers prior to their grand voyage. Later, accompanied by a military band in full swing, over 100 licensed London taxis took over 250 children, suffering from a range of chronic debilitating illnesses and life limiting conditions, and their families on a trip of a lifetime to Disneyland Resort Paris. The initiative is intended to give them a break from their world of treatment and therapy. Since 1994, 2,000 taxis have taken almost 4,000 children to Disneyland.

Headway East exhibit at the Canary Wharf Community Window Canary Wharf Group recently displayed the stunning artwork of the charity Headway East London in its Community Window. The fantastic organisation supports people suffering from brain damage by establishing a welcoming community, where members are valued and encouraged to fulfil their potential. The Headway Art Studio was founded in order to generate communication through collaborative projects. The vibrant art pieces produced are a vivid expression of creativity of the brain injury survivors who are able to explore and discover their artistic skills. Thanks to the exhibition, the Headway Art Studio attracted attention from the Financial Ombudsman organisation which, having been inspired by the colourful and uplifting display, commissioned the charity to produce a new piece for their new offices in Canary Wharf. They are incredibly thankful to the artists for “brightening up” their reception area.

LIVING

Want to completely escape from the world, without turning to Cast Away-style escapism? Then head to Maia, where private yoga, world-class food and, most importantly, the best bath of your life awaits WORDS: ELLE BLAKEMAN

T

here is privacy and there is privacy; Maia offers the latter. Thirty huge villas, spread across 12 hectares, each with their own outdoor spa, dining area and infinity pool overlooking the sea take ‘getting away from it all’ to a new level. You can quite easily avoid the sight of anyone but your butler should you wish. Maia is a place governed by nature: lush hibiscus and lemongrass plants, rustling wildlife and white-sand beaches leading onto the warm Indian Ocean below. There are many effects of this, one of which is that you will be woken up by sunlight and birdsong, rather than an iPhone or your neighbour’s Land Rover. Another is that at night, the villas and their surrounding areas are as dark as God intended it to be at that time, which has a powerful effect on the body and quickly gets you back to a normal circadian rhythm, the one you would have had before being busy became a competitive sport. For my first morning, I booked myself into a yoga class at 8am, and when my wake-up call roused me from the deep, virtually comatose sleep that only comes with total isolation from the world, all I could think is “What the hell possessed me to book a morning yoga class at 8am?!”. However, this mood rapidly dissipated when I saw the studio: a handful of mats laid in the outdoor spa,

surrounded by plants with leaves bigger than me and a waterfall that looked like it was put there specifically for our class (having spent years trying to ‘get’ yoga, I can confirm that little reduces you to a Zen-like state faster than an upward dog next to a waterfall). After this, I floated blissfully to breakfast on the beach, unable to decide which was better – the sea view, the platters of fruit, pastries and charcuterie, or the fact that I didn’t have to go near any form of public transport for the foreseeable future – the closest thing being the golf buggies at our beck and call all day – heaven. The rest of the day melted away as I pottered around in my huge private villa (no one does mere ‘rooms’ here) – jumping in and out of the pool, eating most of the welcome coconut cake left by my lovely butler Samantha and having as many baths in the outdoor bath sunk into the second infinity pool (really) as I could justify. I actually think I hit bath nirvana – everything else will be downhill from here. I had an Omorovicza facial in the afternoon which was so relaxing it knocked me out for the rest of the day and it was all I could do to half-heartedly flick through a newspaper on the daybed and have another bath. At night, finally bored of bathing and my own company, I joined my party – all of whom had been similarly enjoying the lack of contact with other people. Everyone

was exceedingly relaxed, surprised by how quickly they adapted to ‘holiday mode’. The restaurant has a nice mix of couples, friends and family, and we quickly realised that Maia, while perfect for honeymooners, is not a honeymoon destination. This is a key distinction: the former is full of smug couples, toned from months of personal training and carb avoidance, talking endlessly about how the best man’s speech could have been worse; a place that all sane people should avoid like the plague. The latter, however, is one that affords you the privacy to feel like the only people in the world when you want, and the opportunity to rejoin the real world, or rather a very tranquil, enjoyable version of the real world, when you choose. Food-wise, while you can order pretty much anything you can think of here, the main menu is very influenced by the local Creole culture and you will find delicious local dishes, such as spiced fish curries, alongside gourmet Indian, Thai and French cuisine. The atmosphere is wonderfully soporific and hours disappear in a flash as we dined slowly, taking in the view of both the pool, lit by tiki torches and the beach next to us, chatting about our days which were all mostly spent in some form of water. There is a nice amount to do here without feeling bored or overwhelmed – during the day you can

accompany the chefs to the local food market in Victoria – well worth seeing if you have the time – where locals sell lines of red snapper and home-made packs of spices picked fresh from the trees. If you can muster the energy to leave your infinity pool, Maia can arrange a hike in the nearby Mare aux Cochons deep in the Morne Seychelles National Park – uphill enough to make you feel like you’ve earned the view, yet not so hard that it can’t be done in an old pair of trainers (a pleasing mix) – you will trek past cinnamon trees and rocks with climbing vanilla pods, past waterfalls and huge trees laden with the amusingly shaped Coco de Mer (Google it if you’re unfamiliar), while at the top is a stunning view over the Indian Ocean where you might be lucky enough to spot some turtles. Best of all, when you get back to your villa, you’ve earned another infinity-pool bath. D As of November 2014, Ocean Panoramic Villas at MAIA will start from £1,955 on a BEYOND All-inclusive basis, per villa, per night based on two sharing. This includes all daily meals, soft drinks and Premium alcoholic beverages, welcome Champagne on arrival, a dedicated butler service, Wi-Fi, unlimited scuba diving, laundry, yoga or qi gong and non-motorised sports (snorkelling, kayaking, canoeing) maia.com.sc; +248 4 390 000.

Marrakech [City Break]

From the busy, dusty souks and open-air restaurants to the perfectly manicured gardens of the Jardin de Majorelle, Marrakech is the ideal short-haul escape WORDS: Elle Blakeman

TRAVEL travel

A

city of snake-charmers and souks might not seem like the most obvious destination for glamour and high fashion, but such is the nature of Marrakech and its power to surprise. Once you discover the sheer variety of things to do in the city, it becomes clear why it held such an enduring appeal to the late Yves Saint Laurent, and continues to do so for today’s travellers. The riotous explosion of colour and style that awaits at the Djemaa el Fna, Marrakech’s famous open-air market, is sure to have appealed to the couturier. It is perhaps one of the most enjoyable places to be lost in, as every turn reveals a different hidden treasure, from exquisite rug stalls to explosively loud food sellers. If you are feeling brave, haggle with sellers to take home your own handmade piece of Marrakech, or stop off at a food stall for an authentic taste of a Moroccan tagine. However, Marrakech isn’t entirely about bargaining: boutiques such as Atelier Moro offer the highest quality in craftsmanship without the hectic ambience of the market. If the heady excitement of the noise and heat at the Djemaa el Fna begins to take its toll, retreat to quieter ground, or should we say grounds, within the Jardin de Majorelle. The gardens are a haven of tranquillity, full of cacti plants and places to hide away for a moment of calm. They were bought and restored by Saint Laurent as a labour of love back in 1980, in order to prevent them from being turned into a hotel complex. When he passed away, his ashes were scattered in its rose garden. If you are feeling more intrepid explorer than fashionista, make the most of Marrakech’s location at the foot of the Atlas Mountains and take a guided hike up in to the foothills to explore beautiful waterfalls and vast landscapes. If you don’t fancy the hike, have a camel ride instead. Whilst it may be tempting to spend the evenings relaxing with some fine dining at spots such as Dar Moha – the former home of fashion designer Pierre Balmain – be sure to take one last trip to Djemaa el Fna at night, when the main square becomes a vast open-air food market and street sellers give way to night-time entertainers and belly dancers. Watching the city change shape at night, its enchanting allure is clear to see.

WHERE TO STAY There is an area of Morroco, La Palmeraie, around ten minutes outside of the medina where everything changes; the people begin to filter away, the buzz calms down and the sounds of haggling in the souks fade into the background. It is a place that attracts those seeking both respite and luxury, and rumours of celebrities (Brad and Angelina) and royalty owning property nearby are rife; it is here that you will find the Mosaic Palais Aziza Hotel & Spa – an oasis of calm tucked away behind huge gates. As you step inside, the dancing water feature, decorated daily with petals from the garden, combines with the huge, jewel-toned reception area, a perfectly staged view of the pool and some very enthusiastic air conditioning to create the best arrival I have ever had. With just 20 rooms (all huge) it’s more large guest house than hotel and visitors are made to feel that way, with helpful local staff who cannot do enough to make your stay better. The décor is spectacular, inkeeping with local tradition, all huge ceilings, mosaic tiles in rich shades of emerald and gold, while the garden is quite simply magnificent – manicured to perfection, it is the ideal setting for the pool which, due to the hotel’s boutique size, is never overcrowded. In fact, in four days we saw precisely 10 other guests, and that was mainly at breakfast – heaven for those looking for a real escape from the world. D Mosaic Palais Aziza Hotel & Spa, from €295 per room per night, based on two sharing on a B&B basis, including airport pick-up and taxes, mosaicpalaisaziza.com

sPARE AFTERNOON You could go shopping, buy some tagine pots and see some snakes, but it is hot and you can do that in the evening. Instead, book yourself into the hotel’s spa for a traditional Hammam & Body Treatment, where you will be scrubbed, bathed and cleansed until you are made new again.

A question of sport Stylish newcomer replaces the venerable Freelander

T

WORDS: matthew carter

hey’ve been busy up at Gaydon, where Jaguar and Land Rover are based. As Jaguar launches its most important car for decades, the XE, so Land Rover unveils the Discovery Sport, its replacement for the Freelander. Although a compact SUV, i.e. smaller than the existing Disco, Land Rover has managed to squeeze seven seats into the car… though as LR refers to it as 5+2 seating, it suggests that the rearmost set of seats will be best used by children only. Being a Land Rover, the four-wheel drive Discovery Sport will be an accomplished off-roader. It has long-travel suspension and a phalanx of electronic traction aims to

ensure it will wade through the thickest of mud. But, unlike Freelander, it has a new multi-link rear suspension to make sure it adds comfort and superior on-road handling to its armoury. Inside there’s a new eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system and standard tilt-and-slide row two seating to allow easy access to the rear seats. Due to go on sale next January, Discovery Sport will be powered by Land Rover’s existing 2.2-litre, 190hp turbo diesel and coupled to a nine-speed automatic or six-speed manual. Later in the year, a two-wheel drive version will also be offered as Land Rover accepts that not everyone will want to get its wheels dirty.

Size matters Mercedes has looked to the top of its range to shape the latest C-class, and the result is impressive, says Matthew Carter

I

t was time for a double-take. I’d just handed back the latest Mercedes S-class limo and replaced it with a C-class saloon. Or so I’d thought. As I settled behind the smart piano-black interior and gripped the chunky three-spoke steering wheel, I realised my mistake: I’d got into another S-class. Except I hadn’t. This really was a new C-class… it’s just that it looked and felt like a 7/8ths scale model of its big sister. And that tells you how much effort M-B has put into its new junior executive, and how high the stakes are getting. Globally the C-class is Merc’s bestseller, so when it came to developing a new one they pulled out all the stops. It needed to because, frankly, the old C-class wasn’t the best in class by a long way. In fact, if you wanted a compact sports saloon you bought a BMW 3-series – it was the default option and was streets ahead of not just the C-class but also the Audi A4. It’s a lot more complicated today. For a start there’s a new kid in town ready to rattle the establishment cage. No one has driven the advanced new Jaguar XE yet, so we can’t be absolutely certain that it will match or (preferably) better the establishment. But if the recent

F-type is anything to go by, it will. Germany is right to be worried about Coventry’s latest. BMW can still afford to ignore the Audi A4, though. Well-made, good-looking in a sober sort of way and reasonably high-tech, the Audi falls down by being just plain dull to drive. But the men from Munich have a fight on their hands with the new C. This is a clean sheet design, with totally new architecture under the sculpted and swooping body. Making extensive use of aluminium, the new car is longer and wider than the old model, yet around 100kg lighter than before, making it much more efficient. And nowhere is that better displayed than under the bonnet. The vast majority of C-class models will be sold as company cars, and that means – for the time being at any rate – they are likely to be diesels. The test car was a C250 diesel, which in the good old days would have signified a six-cylinder engine displacing 2.5-litres. Today it’s lost two cylinders and has shrunk to 2.1-litres but grown a couple of turbochargers… and pumps out a healthy 200+ hp as a result. The top speed is more than 150mph and a 6.6 second time to 62mph from rest. The performance is

“This is a clean sheet design, with totally new architecture under the sculpted and swooping body”

MOTORING

delivered through a standard and wonderfully smooth seven-speed automatic, a transmission that perfectly complements the engine. More relevant to the modern world, perhaps, are the impressive 113 g/km of CO2 emissions and the combined 65mpg figures. So it’s quick and efficient, which is as it should be, though the engine will be a little too gruff for some. Mind you, this unwelcome noise from the engine might simply be accentuated by the overall sense of refinement from the rest of the car. In that respect, had Merc engineers been developing a car for two or three classes up, they couldn’t have done a better job. And the interior is a Best in Class job: top-quality materials are used throughout, and even though the seats are covered in synthetic leather you’d have to be an expert – or a cow – to tell it apart from the real thing. The use of proper metal rather than silver-painted plastic for the air vents and switchgear adds a touch of class, though the touchscreen tablet display used for the sat nav, the sound system and so on looks a little too much like an afterthought. Legroom is a little tight in the rear, to be honest, though whether that’s a problem depends entirely on how often you take an adult or two in the back. Unusually for a Mercedes, the C-class is reasonably well-equipped. As well as the standard automatic transmission, the C 250 AMG LINE version comes with sat nav, rear parking camera, climate control and a DAB radio as standard, plus a few AMG branded styling and cosmetic extras rather than extra performance kit. This sense of class is repeated on the outside. The swooping lines, abundant use of chrome, LED lights front and rear and trapezoidal exhaust pipes have all been borrowed from the top-of-the range limo… though that’s something that’s likely to please C-class owners rather more than S-class ones. So far, then, BMW has a real fight on its hands. The new Merc is good-looking, performs well and oozes class: it’s a huge step up from its predecessor. There’s just one

elephant left in the room – can it match the Bimmer for driving pleasure? On paper it can, in practice not quite. It’s a rear-wheel drive, which is a good starting point, while its front suspension uses a sophisticated system also used, you’ve guessed it, in the S-class. Available on the options list, meanwhile, is an air suspension system, yours for an extra £895. Replacing the standard steel springs, the Airmatic system is designed to boost sporting handling by keeping body roll to a minimum at the same time as providing a magic carpet ride. It works, up to a point. The new C-class is especially comfortable on long motorway runs, but it doesn’t want to handle twisty B-roads with quite the same gusto as a 3-series would, despite the fancy electronics that allow the driver to fiddle with the suspension settings. Maybe it doesn’t matter. The C-class might not be the ultimate driver’s car, but it more than makes up for a BMW’s sense of involvement by being distinctive, well-equipped, beautifully made and having a simply stunning interior. But the real battle is to come. And if the XE can combine the Merc’s classiness with the Bimmer’s driver involvement, then Jaguar will move to the top of the class. Watch this space.

Often thought of as a ‘man’s drink’, today almost a third of whisky drinkers are women. Here, Mike Peake raises a toast to ladies who order the hard stuff

A

woman walks into a bar and orders a whisky. No, it’s not the start of a groanworthy sexist joke, it’s the start of a new trend that has steadily been gathering momentum for more than 18 months, fuelled by bloggers, celebrity ambassadors and changing tastes that are giving ever more women the confidence to ask for a shot of ‘the hard stuff’. Women in the UK – who now account for one third of the spirit’s buyers – are shaking off whisky’s longstanding ‘macho’ connotations and giving it a makeover as a sophisticated drink for the discerning social tippler. Asda reports that 35 per cent of women are choosing whisky over any other alcoholic beverage, while London wine and spirit experience Vinopolis has noticed a 25 per cent rise in the number of females who want to learn more and understand how to appreciate its finer points. “Whisky has had a ‘dusty’ traditional image, being seen as a ‘male’ drink,” explains Melanie Reeve, Vinopolis’ spirits and wine expert. “Over the generations, women have been conditioned by the message: ‘You can’t/shouldn’t/won’t like whisky.” But those barriers are being trampled down: “A shift in attitudes is evident,” adds Reeve, “with examples of women achieving senior roles as master blenders and

Johnnie Walker appointed Christina Hendricks as Brand Ambassador, tying in with the popularity of TV shows such as Mad Men.” While that particular show can’t single-handedly claim responsibility for whisky’s sudden popularity with women, its depiction of powerful females confidently slugging down hard liquor has certainly played its part. Even Lady Gaga has done her bit, thanking Jameson, the Irish whiskey, for helping with her songwriting. Whisky for women is in. It’s not that anyone was actually telling ladies to steer clear of a glass of scotch or a tumbler of bourbon, but the drink’s enduringly masculine image was perhaps a little overwhelming – and not really befitting the female social drinker unless she liked to visit bars where ZZ Top Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, moviestorecollection.com

still featured on the jukebox. “Whisky is definitely perceived as a ‘statement’ drink,” says Reeve, “and for some women, social convention once meant that they felt self-conscious ordering scotch in a bar.” But walk into a pub in any cool city today and a woman with a whisky in her hand should barely raise an eyebrow. And she won’t necessarily be hiding her whisky in an exotic cocktail, either: a recent survey into adult drinking habits found that 52 per cent of women who choose whisky take it neat. Reeve argues that this could be explained, in part, by women being “better listeners” than men and thus better placed to benefit from the educational efforts of whisky writers and bloggers. Industry leader Cara Laing, head of brands marketing at 66-year-old family firm Douglas Laing & Co, thinks there could be something else, too. “My father reckons us girls have a far better nose for appreciating whisky,” she says. “Our early love of perfumes gives us a bit of a head start, I think.” “Ladies are becoming more adventurous with whisky,” agrees Ernest Reid, head bartender at Canary Wharf’s Boisdale. “For introductory drams I often recommend a Speyside-style whisky, as they tend to be smoother and lighter but I always give them a little taste of a big and Christina Hendricks at Diageo Reserve World Class Johnnie Walker Blue Label Game Changer Event 2012

peaty Islay malt, which tend to have a Marmite effect, just in case.” London-based Alwynne Gwilt, better known by her blogging nom-de-plume Miss Whisky, is doing as much to change the spirit’s image as anyone, having fallen in love with it during a tasting in Soho in 2011. Her website misswhisky.com features interviews with more than 30 influential whisky women aficionados, including bartenders, business owners, writers and master blenders, each united by their passion not just for whisky, but their belief that the spirit is patently not just for men: “I love

“You don’t need to swirl your glass as you would when tasting wine. All the aromas are already being released” helping people learn more and seeing them enjoy themselves and becoming more confident in their knowledge,” she says. So how best to appreciate a glass of whisky? Just like the lion’s share of men, many women really don’t know where to begin, but Reeve at Vinopolis suggests that your starting point should be an ‘open mind’. “You don’t need to swirl your glass as you would when tasting wine,” she says. “All the aromas are already being released. Gently ‘hover’ over the sample, and think about what aromas you can detect.” Some examples, she says, could be orchard or tropical fruits (apple, pineapple), vanilla, pepper, caramel, toffee, or smoke, to name but a few. “Next, take a sip and roll it round your mouth,” she says, “then try adding a few drops of water, and use your nose again.” The aromas will change and, depending on the whisky, the water will often create notes of hay, grass or citrus, or perhaps peat, too. As for what makes a world-class whisky, personal preference, of course, is everything, although the very best adhere to a couple of golden rules: “Great whiskies are along similar principles to great wines,” says Reeve. “They are complex, with a memorable, lingering finish.” It’s got to be worth a shot, if you’ll pardon the pun. If nothing else, Cara Laing reckons your head (and hips) may thank you for it in the morning: “If you stick with whisky and soda with a slice of lemon, which is popular with Japanese women, I’ll almost guarantee no hangover,” she says, adding that she’s also heard from ‘a reliable source’ that whisky is the “least calorific alcoholic drink” that there is. D www.vinopolis.co.uk

Dalmore Trinitas  Only three bottles of this 64-year-old, £100,000 single malt were ever released, making it about as hard to find as the Ark of the Covenant. The lucky few who have tasted it talk of notes of sweet raisins, rich Colombian coffee, crushed walnuts and bitter orange. Befriend a billionaire and keep your fingers crossed.

 Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix In January 2010, snow at the Glenfiddich distillery caused the partial collapse of the warehouse roof, exposing some of the maturing oak casks to the night sky. The resultant whisky was found to be delightful – and a limited-edition scotch was born. Keep an eye on auctions for the last few bottles.

Dalmore King Alexander III  Bourbon barrels from Kentucky and aged sherry casks ensure that every Dalmore whisky is rich in flavour. The pick of the Dalmore bunch is arguably King Alexander III, which has come into contact with barrels that have previously held Bordeaux wine, madeira, bourbon, sherry and port. Pay around £120 a bottle.

f you’re more familiar with Chinese food from a takeaway carton, yes you with the fortune cookies in your desk, it’s time to brush up on the cuisine and sample the real deal. Canary Wharf has a wide variety of international cuisines on offer, but Royal China has the prime Thames-side spot, next to the Canary Wharf pier. If you’re lucky, there might still be a few warm nights to take advantage of the large outdoor patio. Arriving early evening, we were sadly out of time for the freshly steamed or fried dim-sum, served until 5pm; it is one of the restaurant’s signature experiences and it keeps the place busy for express business lunching (note to self – book for lunch next time!). However, we didn’t feel out of place in the evening; the buzzing atmosphere and occasionally boisterous group are the sign of a good time. Fabric tablecloths and napkins, the

with new Asian bubble pearl cocktails, made with fresh lychee, coconut, passion fruit, or our choice in an attempt to cling onto summer, strawberry. The jelly-like bubbles added an interesting texture, and a splash of something stronger can be added on request. With each Royal China branch offering its chef’s choice of signature dishes, we opted for lemon chicken. It was a fresh and zesty contrast to the richer sautéed prawns in honey and black bean sauce. We proudly declined the knife and fork which were offered to us, preferring to show off our convincing (we think) chopstick skills. Portion sizes were more than generous; we might have survived on the steamed rice and noodles with beansprouts alone, so don’t be afraid of going hungry. A dessert quickly materialised, in the form of a fresh rainbow of pineapple, dragon fruit and grapes, perfectly sliced. I’m sure I said I didn’t have room… D 30 Westferry Circus, Canary Wharf, London E14 royalchinagroup.co.uk

Reward a year of hard work by throwing the ultimate work Christmas Party. Whether you want an elegant dinner, canapés at the bar or a big celebration, let Canary Wharf’s diverse selection of restaurants look after you and your team

Traditional Tastes Boisdale of Canary Wharf is famous for its roasts, so who better to trust to cook the perfect Christmas dinner? A night at Boisdale means whisky, cigars and live music: namely the fantastic Frank & Dean’s Christmas Party, which from 4 – 21 December sees two crooners belting the tunes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin accompanied by the Pete Lawrence Orchestra. You can book for parties of 13 to 22, and there are four menus to choose from priced £42 to £75. Little extras are optional to make the night more special, such as a cheese course for a £9 supplement per person or a course of mini haggis with a noggin of Scotch Whisky for £8. D Boisdale of Canary Wharf, Cabot Place, 020 7715 5818

Something Different If by December you start to feel a little saturated with mince pies and potatoes, shake things up at Ibérica Canary Wharf with vibrant Spanish cooking, seafood and salty slices of Iberico ham. Ibérica’s Christmas set menu offers regional Spanish dishes including the likes of octopus a la gallega, ensaladilla rusa with tuna, and crispy confit of Segovian

suckling pig. The restaurant itself is intimate. Its sheltered mezzanine floor is a wonderful space for entertaining and captures the buzzing atmosphere of the main restaurant floor below. The Christmas menu is £45 per person and available for groups of eight or more. D Ibérica Canary Wharf, Cabot Square, 020 7636 8650

Room with a view If you’ve chosen Canary Wharf for your location, why not make the most of the scenery? At its spot on the fourth floor of Canada Place, Plateau’s floor-to-ceiling windows look out at One Canada Square tower and views of Canada Square Park, which is transformed each winter into a fairy-light lit, outdoor ice rink. Up to 50 seated guests can be accommodated in the more informal Bar & Grill, where a three course menu starts at £32. Alternatively, there’s space for 40 guests in the restaurant

with a price of £45 per person. The staggered menus cater for all budgets, group sizes and tastes, and in this thread head sommelier Thomasz Kusznerukcan can suggest wines best suited for your party. From French wine to French food, current head chef Alan Pickett adds a contemporary twist to classical French cuisine; try pumpkin velouté or tarte tartin to shake up typical British Christmas fare. D Plateau Restaurant, Bar & Grill, Canada Place, 020 7715 7100

O n e f o r a k ne e s up For an event that’s a little more informal, enjoy drinks and canapés at Rocket Restaurant & Bar. Or, for a real blow out, a 100 can sit for dinner, where they will be treated to their own private bar, a rooftop terrace, and DJ and dance floor. You can even hire casino tables with professional croupiers, themed ice luges for after dinner vodka shots and photo booths – if you dare – to capture the night’s antics.

Tailored To You If you want an event finely tailored to suit your company, Tom’s Kitchen, Canary Wharf offers a fully customisable experience. The restaurant has a range of spaces available for private or semi-private hire, with the option of seating as little as six to standing as many as 100. At £55 per person, the Christmas menu includes half a bottle of house wine. However, wine and festive canapé packages are also available, the latter including winter drinks such as

Big Bash

mulled wine and mint chocolate martinis. Here, enjoy a classic Christmas menu with Tom Aiken’s – Michelin-starred chef and Tom’s Kitchen’s founder – touch. Highlights include turkey flavoured with sage and onion stuffing served with roast potatoes crisped in duck fat, and steaming Christmas pudding with a dollop of brandy cream.

The exhibition covers all major areas of Bridget McCrum’s work, from an early carving at age 16 to bronze and carved stone sculptures made in 2014, her 80th year. In sculptures that convey her innate feeling for the natural world, her favoured subject matter is animals and birds, whose forms she may merge with those of ancient artefacts such as tools and ceremonial weapons – the curve of a wing may evoke the shape of an axe or knife. She also brings drawing into her sculpture, especially in carved pieces where she creates

surface textures that throw the form into greater relief or indicate a soft area of downy feathers. She has a painter’s sensibility for patinating bronze, demonstrated here through the range of rich colour and tonal variation she achieves across the surface of both small and large pieces. Contemporary art expert and panelist for Canary Wharf’s upcoming STRARTA art fair, Mark Westall has been on the art scene for almost 20 years. Each month, he introduces us to an artist that he is tipping to be the next big thing…

hat’s so interesting? Science/art collaborations often seem a bit cold. Galleries are increasingly full of digitally created models, manipulations of data, 3D-printed creations, and this is as it should be. The intersection of science and art is nowadays recognised as a fertile, mutually beneficial territory, but it can be a little dry. And then you meet the scratch ’n’ sniff lunar landscapes of Sue Corke. Corke’s work wears its scientific credentials lightly, a mix of contemporary and traditional techniques bringing to life complex concepts of ownership and experience raised by our potential colonisation of space with humanity, warmth and dark humour. Just take those scratch ’n’ sniff prints. Working with long-term collaborator Hagen Betzwieser, Corke highlights the impossibility of a sensory experience of space with her scratch ’n’ sniff prints of the moon, impregnated with an olfactory ink developed by an industrial partner, to replicate the actual scent of the lunar surface.

A formally trained artist – Corke is a graduate of the prestigious Falmouth School of Art – her interest in traditional techniques has seen her go to extraordinary lengths to master a method, even completing a formal

apprenticeship in etching and lithography at Edinburgh Printmakers. This mastery gives her a creative freedom to explore inventive new uses for these rare skills. Recent print works include a series of very large etchings of the moon. Inspired by the early work of Scottish astronomers James Nasmyth and James Carpenter, the prints portray in stunning graphic detail the surface of the moon in different phases. In contrast, Frigoris and Tranquilitatis are a silk-screened explosion of pop colour, based on early US Geographic Survey studies of the topography of our own moon prior to the first landings. Corke is now coming to the end of a five-year residency at The Firestation a unique and highly acclaimed programme for emerging artists. Previous artists include Turner-Prize winner Martin Creed. During the residency she has produced work that has been exhibited internationally. Highlights from the last two years include Kosmica at Mexico’s Laboratorio, Arte Alameda, Microwave Hong Kong and Arte Liste Basel. Sue Corke is currently working towards her next solo show with Berloni in February 2015, while her collaboration with Hagen Betzwieser will also form a major focus.

Affordable Art Fair

battersea

H

Tabithah Rahman takes a closer look at one of London’s more accessible art fairs, taking place in Battersea this month and promising to offer excellent value for money

eralded as ‘the friendliest of them all’, the Affordable Art Fair has become a global phenomenon since it first launched on a somewhat smaller scale in London back in 1999. It has expanded beyond our fair capital into 14 other cities across the world, from Hong Kong and Hamburg to Singapore and Stockholm. Its aim? To make art more accessible and affordable. It’s worth clarifying the parameters of ‘affordable’ in this instance; visitors to the fair can expect to pay as little as £50 and no more than £5,000 for artworks. With a clear vision to unite novices and experts alike, art lover and founder of the fair Will Ramsay has brought together a selection of galleries that specialise in selling affordable art in a bid to open up the market and make art accessible to all. His belief in the importance of affordable art has resulted in him having made various other contributions to the field, including founding the contemporary art-hub PULSE and the ART HK fair in Asia, not to mention also being a shareholder in Art India, renowned for being the

sub-continent’s first international art fair. Ramsay understands that not everyone is – or needs to be – a specialist in order to appreciate art, so experts will be on hand to provide a better understanding of the contemporary artworks on display, ranging from ceramics, paintings and sculptures to printmaking and photography. A total of 110 galleries will be participating this year, including the Northcote Gallery, Bell Fine Art, the Russell Gallery and Print Club London. Ramsay has also travelled the globe to find a number of international exhibitors, such as Able Fine Art (New York) and Envie d’Art (France). Those of you who are looking to learn more will be able to take part in the various workshops, demonstrations and talks taking place throughout the three-day event. Just 15 years on and four continents later, the Affordable Art Fair is currently enjoying great success, providing a place where master and apprentice can unite in their appreciation of art from around the world.

 SALES ANDREW GROOCOCK,

partner and department head at Knight Frank Canary Wharf, comments on the trends in the residential sales market Following an extremely busy first six months of 2014, where we agreed more deals than in any of our preceding 20 years in Docklands, we were faced with our usual quietest month of the year in August. All indicators suggest that from September and moving forward into Autumn we should see a return to the high levels of activity that we experienced at the start of the year. The core values of the market remain the same in Canary Wharf. Vendors need to be realistic in terms of marketing price in order to make sure their property sees plenty of activity, whilst ensuring that they choose the best placed agent in the market to ensure they

“An extremely busy first six months of 2014, where we agreed more deals than in any of our preceding 20 years in Docklands” get the optimum value from the best buyer. In my opinion the best placed agents will be those who are able to market the property in the best light and to the widest audience whilst having a solid track record of performing within the area. At the very least a vendor should expect their chosen agent to be using professional photographers and floor planners. Remember that you have one opportunity to launch your property and as a result you want the ¼” thumbnail that appears online, to show the property at its best. In conjunction with this, make sure that your agent is giving your property maximum exposure. Ensure that your property is displayed in the local office window to attract the all-important walk in trade, make sure it’s uploaded to the relevant web portals and ideally choose the agent that can offer you an international platform to showcase your property on.

LETTINGS GARY HALL,

partner and department head at Knight Frank Wapping, comments on the trends in the residential lettings market

With a constant rise in approved planning applications, new build residential schemes are starting to dominate the London sky line and this is an exciting option for corporate tenants relocating to and within central London. I have previously spoken about the quality of the residential developments coming out of the ground and how each development is out-doing the last in terms of facilities and specification, but the popularity of “lifestyle” schemes on the rental market in central London is continuing to grow, as the demand for rental property follows suit. In line with Knight Frank’s residential expansion programme we are delighted to launch two new on site offices in prime residential schemes to support the vast local and international investment in London and the private rental sector. The first to be opened in October is Arthouse in Kings Cross Central, one of London’s most exciting new neighbourhoods and the gateway to Europe. With a mixture of restaurants, bars, galleries, museum’s and green spaces it attracts a diverse community. Kings Cross is also home to the world famous arts college (Central Saint Martins) and soon to be home to Google’s London Headquarters.

“The popularity of “lifestyle” schemes on the rental market in central London is continuing to grow”

DID YOU KNOW? More than 48,000 homeowners have used the government’s Help to Buy scheme since it started, figures have shown.

The other is in One Tower Bridge on the Southbank, which is due to open in December. The Southbank, Shad Thames, London Bridge and the surrounding areas are fast becoming the location of choice for tenants who want everything on their doorstep, along with the draw of the River Thames. These are very exciting new ventures for Knight Frank and we are thrilled to be a part of these fantastic schemes and locations.

STATE OF THE MARKET CROSSRAIL TO PUSH PRICES

NO COOLING IN THE CAPITAL

JASON TAYLOR, sales director at Franklyn James Estate Agents, comments on the state of the residential property market

ALASDAIR CARPENTER,

We are still a number of years away from the opening of Crossrail, so time does remain during which investment could be made. Putting other economic factors aside, we consider what impact the forthcoming Crossrail stations will have in the E14 area. It is anticipated that those properties within a ten minute walk of the new stations along the Crossrail route, will increase in value well above and beyond the rate of inflation. Furthermore, the prices of those properties in the immediate vicinity are likely to increase very noticeably indeed. So, if we apply this to the Docklands area, those developments based directly adjacent to the Canary Wharf Estate, such as Discovery Dock, Pan Peninsula and No 1 West India Quay, will be certain to see very significant price rises. For those developments not quite on the very doorstep of the Canary Wharf Estate, but still within a very short walk of the Crossrail station, such as 41 Millharbour, Landmark and Baltimore Wharf, property prices will undoubtedly still increase noticeably due to the huge benefits that Crossrail will bring. Whilst Canary Wharf is internationally recognised as a leading business district, it should not be forgotten that it is also the location of a vast leisure and retail complex. With the opening of Crossrail, Canary Wharf will become considerably more accessible as a shopping destination and the more popular an area becomes for work or leisure, the more the property values within that area will rise.

Recent figures dispel the expected house price down turn. Those who expected a cooling in the capital’s property boom will be surprised by recent figures from both the Nationwide and the Land Registry. Nationwide have reported a 0.8 per cent price increase month on month in August. This compares to 0.2 per cent in July. According to the Land Registry (data collected from completed transactions) the average price of a home in Greater London is now an impressive £457,072. Interestingly, although prices in London have soared way above previous peaks, the average price of a home in the UK is still considerably below the figure recorded in November 2007. Many buyers are being incentivised by the attractive mortgage rates being offered. Given that many banks and building societies have just cut fixed rate products (some on a five year term) to below three per cent, potential buyers are seizing the opportunity to get in now before the widely suspected base rate rise in early 2015. These medium term low rates are keeping affordability in check and giving buyer’s confidence to continue in a bullish market. The talk of a slowdown in the housing market may be somewhat premature but the data releases in September and October will give us a more accurate picture of the future trend. I suspect that prices may begin to ease marginally but I also expect both demand and prices to stay upbeat in historic terms.

A NOBLE NEIGHBOURHOOD

L

ondon’s Royal Docks is a historically significant maritime heritage zone comprising of three docks; the Royal Albert Dock, the Royal Victoria Dock and the King George V Dock. Built between 1880 and 1921 on riverside marshes in the London borough of Newham, Royal Docks is situated within the burgeoning East London, an area that has benefitted hugely from redevelopment in Stratford thanks to the 2012 Olympic legacy, along with the rise to fame of established communities such as Shoreditch and Spitalfields. Identified by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, as the next area of regeneration for London, £1 billion of investment is already committed to the project following the announcement that an Asian Business Port will be established at Royal Albert Dock. The residential centrepiece is Royal Wharf by Oxley and Ballymore, a new neighbourhood and town centre that will provide 3,385 new riverside homes – including 310 townhouses – for approximately 10,000 residents. The development is also significant as it offers achievable house prices for the average Londoner and therefore responds to the critical undersupply of housing in London. Situated between Lyle Park and Thames Barrier Park, Royal Wharf

has excellent transport links from Pontoon Dock DLR station and Canning Town on the Jubilee Line, providing access to the West End in 20 minutes, Canary Wharf in just five minutes and London City Airport in four minutes. The Emirates Air Line is also just a short walk away, and in 2018 a new Crossrail station at Custom House will mean that residents can reach Heathrow Airport in just 41 minutes. Inspired by Georgian styling, the development will boast streets and avenues that interconnect and lead to hidden mews, squares and pocket parks. With architectural influences by the townhouses of areas such as Belgravia and Mayfair, Ballymore’s distinctive design alludes to historic London, while bringing contemporary conveniences into the interior finishes of the properties. A new high street will provide 5,000 square metres of shops, bars and restaurants, not to mention a network of squares, riverside walkways and significant new community infrastructure. London’s Royal Docks are set to become a vibrant new area of East London.
