hough hard to believe, the great and the good of the fashion industry are once again gearing up to present their latest collections to the world. In an industry as fast-paced as fashion,

we’re taking a moment in this, our September issue, to celebrate both the past and future of British style. Looking to the future, on page 22 we speak to L.K.Bennett’s CEO,

Inspiration can also be found on page 46 in the form of Anna Bance, the founder of game-changing dress rental company, Girl Meets Dress, and on page 68, where we meet the formidable CEO of Acqua di Parma, to talk about the brand’s latest scent. bottoms up The new bottomless brunch at Bōkan delivers on all counts, as Katy Parker discovers

I

’m no stranger to a bottomless brunch in London; in fact, show me Time Out’s list of the top ten and chances are I’ll have done all of them, barring any that sit too far south of

the river. And while I love the experience of enjoying copious amounts of food while having my glass stealthily refilled with my choice of Bloody Mary, wine or Prosecco, I have too often found myself disappointed with the quality of the food on offer. I think most restaurants believe – or hope – that diners will be so overcome by the limitless fizz on offer that they won’t notice when they are served substandard, ludicrously overpriced food. Therefore, when I was invited to try the new bottomless brunch offering at Bōkan, I was eager to see whether or not this Canary Wharf eatery had succumbed to a similar way of thinking. While not much to look at from the outside, Bōkan, which sits at the top of the new Novotel hotel, is a sight to behold within. Epitomising on-trend

She values a personal and seamless shopping experience, and a brand that makes her feel special,” says Topp. He knows what he’s talking about; Topp is very much hands on: in the shops, meeting customers, talking to the sales girls. “I would never underestimate the value of knowing your customer and ensuring your brand meets needs and aspirations,” he says. We’ve popped into the L.K.Bennett store here in the Wharf during many a lunchbreak for a last-minute sartorial ‘emergency’, and it turns out we’re not alone. “Canary Wharf is London’s major business heartland, and a magnet for intelligent, professional women who need to look polished and elegant throughout their day,” says Topp. “It’s a flagship store for the brand.” Topp’s hobbies include travel, coin collecting and art. “I try to visit the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts each year,

ompared to many prolific photographers of the 20th century, such as the likes of Helmut Newton,

Richard Avedon and Annie Leibovitz, you might not know much – if anything – about the inimitable James Moore. Indeed, the American fashion photographer has long been regarded as a ‘photographer’s photographer’, inspiring generations of budding talent but failing to be widely recognised in the annals of ’60s popular culture. That is, until this year, with the release of Damiani publisher’s James Moore: Photographs 1962-2006 – a rich, comprehensive tome that finally grants the photographer’s work the exposure and attention it deserves. Possessing a peerless eye for detail and an exceptional flair for exploring space and beauty, Moore helped to shape the continually evolving aesthetic of ’60s fashion while working at Harper’s Bazaar under legendary editor Carmel Snow. Formerly a student of illustrious art director, Alexey Brodovitch, Moore got his big break when Bazaar’s art director at the time, Marvin Israel, took a chance on the young up-start, sparking off a decades-long relationship with the title and

From his cinematic black-and-white shots to portraits of models striking structured, angular poses, Moore’s approach to fashion photography was pioneering and original. Alongside his work for Bazaar, the monograph also showcases Moore’s photographs for the likes of W, Vogue, Clairol and CoverGirl – spanning 50 years of his career within the fashion industry right up to the last pieces he did for Bazaar before his death in 2006. Also featured are texts from the leading editors, models, photographers and designers of the day. The power of Moore’s quiet, understated influence is surmised neatly by curator Martin Harrison in the book’s introduction: “Moore maintained a seemingly endless flow of photographs that ranged from fragile, limpid still-lifes to complex, filmic mini dramas. Art directed by Bea Feitler and Ruth Ansel, they were among the most incisive and impressive images of the decade.” James Moore: Photographs 1962-2006, damianieditore.com

Since its first edition in 2005, Only Watch has raised more than £23 million, thanks, in no small part, to Patek Philippe’s Ref. 5016, which became the most expensive wristwatch ever sold when it achieved £5.7 million at Only Watch 2015. I

t’s never not party season, really. As we ease into autumn, Pimms-fuelled summer weddings are behind us, and thoughts turn to city chic autumn parties and – soon – fur-

adorned, glamorous Christmas dos. Any sartorially minded woman can tell you that being a well-dressed guest is expensive. Dress codes range hugely, meaning one trusted outfit won’t cut it, and social media has destroyed all possibility of outfit repeating. Anna Bance is the smart thinker who identified this problem, and its solution. While working as the head of UK PR for Hermès, the notion of Girl Meets Dress was born: a website where you can rent dresses by a huge range of designers, at a fraction of what the dress would cost to purchase. Browse by designer, by dress or body shape, by colour – jewel tones, nudes, pastels and even wedding dresses – select a few dresses and they’ll be sent to you to try on, with a full refund for anything returned unworn. “With Girl Meets Dress, women can easily wear trend-led fashion, while buying only classic pieces that will stand the test

t he new fast fa shion

of time,” Bance explains. “Experience and time are our most precious commodities. The average woman has 22 unworn garments in her wardrobe. Ownership is becoming increasingly irrelevant.” Girl Meets Dress isn’t just for parties – with more than 150 brands and 4,000 dresses on the site, there’s workwear by the likes

young professionals going to weddings and retired ladies going to black tie events... there is no one we can’t find the perfect dress for!” Bance says. Prices are equally democratic, with casual dresses starting at £29 for two days’ rent. Girl Meets Dress stocks well-known brands alongside new, undiscovered labels, taking customer feedback into account. There’s also a free styling service. “Many of our customers email our stylist, tell us where they are going and what they need, and we send them a tailored list of suggestions,” Bance says. Girl Meets Dress has a London showroom where you can try on pieces in person, but the beauty of the system is that it saves time. “A large proportion of our customers work in the financial sector and are based in Canary Wharf. They tend to have busy jobs and not much time to walk around shops, so

prefer online ordering – we deliver to any home or office address,” Bance says. Bance knows busy: she started the business in 2009 alongside co-founder Xavier de Lecaros-Aquise, when

“the service allows women to wear t r e n d - l e d fa s h i o n , w h i l e o n ly b u y i n g c l a s s i c p i e c e s t h at s ta n d t h e t e s t o f t i m e ”

nothing similar existed. “I had no one else to validate the business model or to base the processes on. I really believed in the idea and its market potential,” Bance says. When she needs to relax, travel leads the way. “Girl Meets Dress is the style partner of the W Hotel group, so I enjoyed visiting the W in Verbier in March, and my grandmother lives in Poznań, a city in west Poland – it’s a beautiful place. But my favourite places to spend summer weekends are definitely Devon and Cornwall, for the wonderful seafood, boats and the beach.” As for dining out, Bance keeps it simple. “In the summer I love unfussy, relaxing places with British produce, and picnicking outdoors as much as possible. In winter, nothing beats a Sunday roast in a pub.” It’s good Bance enjoys hearty food: she’ll need energy for what’s ahead. “We have launched a Vintage collection and are expanding on services such as bridesmaid loans,” she tells me; but the landscape is evolving. “Warren Buffett recently said that in ten years, the retail industry will look nothing like it does now, because of the rise in e-commerce and shifts in how people spend their

money,” Bance says. We’re confident Bance will keep up. Girl Meets Dress is business-savvy, millennial-inspired, and helps you feel like a million bucks. Renting dresses may become a habit we can’t kick. girlmeetsdress.com

The more fashion-forward among you should look out for the knitwear, which comes in shades of cobalt blue and baby pink, and the geometric shirt in white and black [pictured]. Reiss, Jubilee Place

he very words Acqua di Parma are synonymous with la dolce vita, bringing to mind lazy, blissful days sipping Aperol Spritz on the Amalfi coast and shopping

in Portofino. The lifestyle company offers a taste – or a smell – of Italy, all exquisitely presented in the sleek, heavy packaging that you see in the best hotels and on the smartest dressing tables around. The brand also produces brightly coloured towels, decadent candles and beautiful leather goods, but it’s the fragrances we’re particularly partial to. The company began in 1916 with the Colonia collection: a light, fresh scent that has become iconic today. As for the products in the Blu Mediterraneo range, they smell like every Vilebrequin-clad, good-looking European Adonis you’ve ever come across. Much of Acqua di Parma’s success derives from the formidable business savvy of Laura Burdese, the brand’s

CEO. A native Italian, Burdese worked at L’Oreal and Calvin Klein Watches and Jewelry before joining Acqua di Parma back in October. “There have been dramatic changes in luxury fragrance,” Burdese says, “with digital, e-commerce and distribution changes, but the most important shift is customer behaviour. It’s positive for us because it’s the niche brands that are booming, not the mass market. The brands with a story to tell.” Fittingly, for the first time, the new Acqua di Parma campaign depicts a real family, starring British model Will Chalker. The campaign uses “emotional storytelling”, says Burdese. “That’s what the brand was missing.”

The logo on each bottle is slightly different; each is made by hand, so the spacing is not as perfect as if they were churned out by a machine. Burdese’s goal is to grow and unlock the brand’s potential. “The UK is our second biggest market after Italy, and then France. Europe has 65 per cent of our market, so we are going to make big pushes into the US and China. In China, fragrance is still smaller than the beauty industry, but it is growing. We want to double turnover by 2020.” It’s a lofty aim – but as Burdese says it, in her charming Italian accent, I feel it is entirely possible. And as I ponder this, in grey and dreary London, there’s only one thing for it – a spritz of Colonia Pura, to transport me straight to the Italian Riviera. mmm. The sat nav is telling me to turn right ahead, down what looks to be a very narrow country lane. It’s certainly

the most direct and quickest route to my destination out in the Berkshire countryside, but I am concerned that ‘my’ Rolls-Royce Dawn might prove a little too bulky for what lies ahead. However, a quick glance at the map suggests the long way around is very long indeed, so country lane it is. A gentle tickle on the throttle and the convertible Dawn wafts its way along the road, the sun filtering through the canopy of trees overhead covering the Royce’s opulent interior with flickering light. The V12 engine upfront purrs almost silently as the long bonnet guides the way ahead. The imposing Dawn certainly fills the lane but so far there’s nothing to worry about. Just as I start to relax, however, I hear something coming towards me. At speed. I sound the horn as a warning just as a Porsche Cayenne moves into view. I brake, he brakes harder and the Spirit of Ecstasy covers her eyes. The way he stops, slams his car into reverse, slips the SUV into a small pull-in behind him and waves me through, suggests he’s a local and has encountered traffic coming the other way many times before. I’ll wager, though, that most times he’s not the one to give way – but there’s something about a Rolls-Royce that commands respect, not jealousy, from others and he is more than happy to reverse out of my way. This respect was also evident at home. My neighbours are used to seeing different cars, from the exotic to the humble, outside my house and they seldom look twice. The Dawn,

It’s a similar story out on the open road, where Dawn simply glides along, though a surprisingly high degree of body roll when cornering does its bit to temper over-enthusiasm. If it could talk, Dawn would whisper a soothing however, is different. Everyone wanders over to have a look, to try the view from behind the wheel and even to ask for a quick spin around the block.
