Dear Resident, It’s that time of year again where you have to rummage to the back of your wardrobe, pull out your coats and scarves and prepare yourself for cooler climes as we make our way firmly into autumn. However, don’t fret, as the Journal has got all bases covered. If you want to face the blustery winds and crunchy red leaves, there’s plenty going on this month. Turn to page 10 for our roundup of Halloween events in the area, but for something a little bit more adult, Open Art Spaces returns to the area, showcasing the wealth of creative residents, including the wonderful Caroline Lees who the Journal wants to thank for this issue’s cover image (p.14). But, if you want to snuggle up and read a good book, turn to page 12 where Bethan Rees meets local author Jeremy Thomas ahead of the launch of his debut crime novel The Santa Monica Suicide Club. WHO IS THE BBC? The Killing of Sister George by Frank Marcus was first produced on stage 50 years ago. It’s a dark comedy transporting the audience into a dystopian world of the BBC in the 1960s, where reputation is everything and no one is who they say they are. For six years, gin-swilling, cigar-chomping June Buckridge has played the beloved character ‘Sister George’ in the popular BBC Radio Drama, Applehurst. This play tells a story of BBC executives deciding to kill her off in an attempt to halt the show’s falling ratings. Furious at the lack of loyalty, June’s precarious personal world heads into a tailspin. The show is directed by Scott Le Crass and produced by Sarah and Justin Savage with Artful Theatre Productions Limited and takes place above the Eel Brook Public House. £15, £12 concessions, 29 October–21 November, Tuesday-Saturday at 7.45pm, matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm, 65 New King’s Road, SW6 4SG, artfultheatre.co.uk

Palace to the people Curator Miranda Poliakoff gives the Fulham Residents’ Journal an insight into an exhibition opening at Fulham Palace this month, which celebrates the historic institution and its journey to the present day

public in 1974 but no immediate solution was found for the building itself. By 1983, against a continuing climate of cuts, an attempt was made to sell the lease but local opposition led to a change of policy. In 1986, the council commissioned a detailed and innovative management plan covering all aspects of the history, archaeology and landscape history, plus there was extensive public consultation and a programme of events. This led to the setting up of the museum, run by an independent trust, in 1992. The remainder of the site continued to be run by the council with the building hired out for weddings and parties, but public access was limited to guided tours only. The prospect of substantial funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund meant that the Palace was no longer seen as a drain on council resources but rather an historic site with great potential that should be preserved and restored. The new exhibition will report on recent archaeological work and the process of conservation during the two Lottery-funded restoration projects, as well as plans for the future. The Fulham Palace Trust, an independent charity that took over the management of the site in 2011, is currently aiming to raise £1.45million as match funding for a further Lottery project to restore the remaining third of the Palace, and open more of it to the public.

F

ulham Palace is much loved by local residents; some admire the peace and calm of the grounds that have been gardened for centuries and the fascinating history of the site, while others enjoy the café and the varied programme of events. The gradual restoration of this nationally important building has been watched and appreciated by many. A new exhibition, called Fulham Palace: From Bishop’s Home to People’s Palace tells the story of the utilisation, preservation and restoration of Fulham Palace over the last 40 years since the Church Commissioners leased the site to Hammersmith & Fulham Council in 1975. Bishop Robert Stopford had retired in 1973 and the controversial decision was made to abandon Fulham Palace as the Bishop of London’s main residence. The reasons given were the high cost of maintaining an increasingly inconvenient building and the difficulty of running the diocese from Fulham rather than central London, especially with traffic congestion. Although Hammersmith & Fulham Council was successful in “saving the Palace”, it was taken on a full repairing lease with a third of the Palace occupied by sitting tenants. Since 1975, the council has tried to find an appropriate use for the Palace. The grounds had already been opened to the

Ahead of the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, Gabriella Dyson finds out from Abels what it takes to handle the mountain of luggage involved in the world’s longestrunning motoring celebration

I

f you happen to be in Hyde Park in the early hours of Sunday 1 November, you’ll no doubt run into hundreds of veteran-car enthusiasts and their cherished vehicles. Braving the anticipated showers and crisp winter air, these seasoned aficionados are united in their passion for one of the biggest and longest-running motoring events in the world. “The annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is the biggest veteran-car event in the calendar,” John Watson, managing director of Abel’s UK residential sector, tells me. “Several thousand people gather together to see the drivers off and to soak up the sights and sounds of yesteryear.” Hundreds of beautifully maintained automobiles line up at the starting point, while thousands of eager spectators gather along the run’s 60-mile route. However, Watson explains that many of these pre1905 vehicles, of which there are more than 500, were not built with luggage in mind. “Our role is to make life easier for everyone involved,” he says. “We collect their baggage in London and transport it down to Brighton where participants can collect it from us at the sea front or choose to have it delivered directly to their hotel.” It’s no mean feat, but Abels has always risen to the occasion. As experts in logistics and moving services, collating all that luggage at the start of the run is something of a walk in the park. Its signature cornflower-blue lorries work like clockwork from sunrise to sunset in order to provide

the sort of quality service that its clients have come to expect over the years. Having been a proud sponsor of the Veteran Car Run since 2010, it was only natural that Abels would gradually come to play a more significant role in the organisation of the event. Each year, the Royal Automobile Club hosts an upscale cocktail party on the Saturday at its headquarters on Pall Mall, prior to the main event, providing the perfect opportunity for participants to celebrate their mutual passion in a relaxed yet formal setting. Abels has been quick to adapt to its new organisational role by getting this venue primed and ready to go, proving its worth not only as a skilled moving service but also as a master of the art of event management. The whole affair promises to be a roaring good time, but for a busy moving company such as Abels, October and November offers two highlights in the motoring calendar. While the company won’t be entering any automobiles into the Bonhams Run itself, the annual Regent Street Motor Show provides the ideal opportunity to display its own veteran vehicles. Taking over one of London’s busiest shopping streets for an entire day, this year you can expect to find an authentic horse-drawn pantechnicon dating back to 1896 (the same year as the Emancipation Run to London to Brighton) alongside some of Abels’ other unique and exciting motors. abels.co.uk; veterancarrun.com -9-

Murder

In 2014, 48 per cent of fiction sales fell under the banner of crime, thriller and mystery genres. With this in mind, Bethan Rees meets local author Jeremy Thomas ahead of the launch of his debut crime novel

I

t’s not often that I find authors themselves more interesting than the words they pen, but in Fulham resident Jeremy Thomas’s case, I could be mistaken. I arrive at Jeremy’s beautiful house, just off Fulham Road, and am greeted by his assistant Ianthe, or “Olganthe from Olgantheshire” as he likes to call her, who shows me through to the light-flooded living room of his SW6 abode. In his pinstripe suit with his pitch-black hair, Jeremy sits comfortably in an armchair sipping freshly brewed tea. A writer of both successful fiction and non-fiction, The Santa Monica Suicide Club is his debut crime novel, which he describes as an “unusual crime thriller”. It’s hard to get too far into the plot without revealing sordid spoilers, but Jeremy gives me a taster. “Mandy is an expat and a failed actor-turned-cop-turned-private investigator who is at a low point at the beginning of the book. He receives a phone call, informing him about a possible case: the third richest man in Mexico’s son has been found dead, but the family doesn’t want to work with the police,” he begins. A

significant witness turns up hanged, bearing a disturbing clue, and then a gruesome series of events begins to unravel. The book reveals Santa Monica’s dark underbelly. “There’s a sinister force at work in the city. It would appear that getting rid of all kinds of individuals, Jeremy Thomas from rich people to the homeless, there’s no rhyme or reason to it. It’s only when he suddenly realises that the gang he’s hunting is hunting him down that it gets tricky,” he continues. But why did Jeremy pick this beachfront city in Los Angeles as the basis of the book? “Santa Monica is wonderful. In the early 2000s, I lived in Pacific Palisades (next to Santa Monica) and there I came up with a premise for a book which included Mandy, but written from multiple points of view – I was later told just to make it simply from one point of view. Bethan Rees speaks to some of the local artists in Fulham who are showcasing at this year’s Open Art Spaces about the inspiration and stories behind their work

T

his month, Kensington & Fulham Open Art Spaces returns, showcasing 170 local artists at 50 free exhibitions alongside a range of performances, talks, workshops,

tours and special openings. This artistic festival celebrates this creative area which is teeming with talent – here’s just a handful of people living and working in SW6 who are getting involved.

Sarah Ollerenshaw

1

Sarah Ollerenshaw’s background is in restoration and conservation, but she’s always been a keen painter. She’s recently finished a two-year stint as an artist-inresidence at a prep school in Fulham and now paints full-time. Her work focuses on landscapes drawn from her experiences while walking with her border terrier and family, including the Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park. You can also see her work at the show Floral Variations which is opening at Oil and Water Gallery in Wandsworth Old Town from 8-31 October.

1. Dancing Through the Wood “This is a painting I did of the bluebells at Cliveden Woods. I took photos while out walking and painted from them in my studio in Wimbledon. I was so struck by the light dancing through the woods; it’s something difficult to catch with a photo. I think you can get closer to the vibe and translucency of a place with paint than you can with a camera. There’s something very evocative of childhood in a bluebell wood – I don’t think you

3. Woodland Walk

2

ever forget your first walk, seeing and smelling bluebells for the first time. My paintings are meant to take you back to experience that delight and wonder you felt on seeing them in all their glory.”

“When you stand in front of this painting, you feel as if you are in among the colour and vibrancy of the Isabella Plantation. There is a lot of paint in my work, which I like; the impasto evokes history, energy and a story of something before. It’s hard to express through words, but I have a feeling as I connect colour to colour and create links for the viewer between what is seen and what is felt. I like to think my work has a kind of integrity, that people can sense from it that I am a sensitive, strong and honest painter who, quite simply, is moved by the delight and wonder of the beauty of things. I am pretty uncomplicated.” sarahollerenshaw.co.uk

2. Grace “These are the bluebells at the Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park, which is a place that has been pivotal in my development as a painter. Every year I go with my family to the plantation to see the bluebells, azaleas and rhododendrons, which are nothing short of spectacular. I find there are so many frustrated ‘country people at heart’ living in London, and hopefully my pictures can transport them away for a moment to the 3 places where they feel at peace, alive and inspired by creation.” - 14 -

J Hugh L Beattie Fiona Brenninkmeyer

1

Artist J Hugh L Beattie has juggled a military career, holding a post as a Territorial Army captain with his love of painting, for many years. His portfolio is extremely varied; from going on tours as a war artist to Afghanistan and Bosnia to painting portraits of personalities, including Baroness Margaret Thatcher. He’s showcasing some of his work later this year (1-5 December) at 1 Royal Opera Arcade in Pall Mall in an exhibition called London Ancient & Modern.

2

Fiona Brenninkmeyer likes to place her paintings in a larger context. Having been trained as an art historian, she uses her personal and political interests to create tension in her working process. Exploring random subjects extensively, these anchors of everyday life have become metaphors for her personal preoccupations.

behind it or in it. I find derelict buildings mysterious and colourful and somehow a little sad and neglected, as they once could have been powerful and productive inside. I am interested in how they are regenerated or left and the process of decay and renovation.”

1. Prada Staircase II

“Passages and alleyways have been a subject of interest for me for some years now. It is about the tension of the space in-between. And a metaphorical bridge or passage to/from and between the internal/external and the place they lead to physically. This image came about quite by chance and is based on an alley by Fulham Road and Fulham Palace roundabout. It is an example of how my work seeks to capture something of meaning in a beautiful light; it is all about chance, light and thought process.”

“This painting belongs to a series that explores doorways and staircases. I was interested in the manifold layers, the many steps that lead us on a particular journey or provoke a specific encounter, conversation or even relationship.”

2. Doodle Bar I “The latest turn on my artistic journey has been the exploration of interiors and exteriors lit in unusual ways. Often the colour of a building or a stairwell changes significantly under bright street lamps, or darker, stormier natural light which captures a particular mood.”

3. Horniman II

“I am intrigued by derelict buildings and the concept of façades. I explored through this series how the exterior appearance of something or someone can quite often imagine what exists

1. Globe v Tate Modern “The mission of this painting is to catch views that you don’t normally notice or don’t think are picturesque. To see a thatched building in a London scene is very rare since the Fire of London destroyed much of them. This expresses my love for finding the joining together of the ancient and modern and how beautiful it is.”

2. Sanger 4 “When I went to Afghanistan for three weeks with 4 Rifle (battalion), I spent every dawn, before it got too hot, painting. I painted a view from every watchtower, or sanger as its known.” jhlb.co.uk

Caroline Lees studied at the Corcoran Gallery School of Art in Washington DC and attended master classes at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She has been a plein-air painter all her life, mostly in the Middle East. Recently, she completed an advanced Medieval Illumination course at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, involving gilding and the use of vellum. In 2011, she won the Sunday Telegraph’s watercolour competition.

1. “This is a watercolour of the conservatory at the very elegant Hurlingham Club. I was very lucky to be allowed inside to paint this interior. The fact that there is glass everywhere makes the lighting more interesting, even the tables reflect this. I loved the design of the floor tiles too – they presented a challenge. The warm light penetrating from the outside windows contrasted with the cool light of the interior. I would think this is a lovely, peaceful place to sit and read or write letters.” 2. “A tiger is such a magnificent animal that it warrants important treatment artistically. This image was painted on gilded gesso and the sgraffito technique was used to make the hairs stand out and glisten. I

utilised vodka to lay the 23ct gold leaf, as is taught in Russia, which prevents the gold leaf becoming soggy. After laying it, you can burnish it with agate.”

3. “This is the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry regimental crest, which was my husband’s regiment, and was originally founded in 1757. The technique I used here is egg tempera and gold leaf on parchment. The motto means ‘Yield to None’.” carolinelees-icons.co.uk

It excites me that clouds represent the ideal and the perishable and signify both doom and fantasy. By grouping the pieces, they form a dialogue with one another and I want this to create an atmosphere of harmony and tension, thereby bringing life to the work.”

“There was a time when I couldn’t look at a beetroot, let alone buy one, bring it home and draw it lovingly, and then make it into a salad. I grew up a hundred miles from London in a house with a large garden. My dad had a massive vegetable patch which we happily raided for fruit. And then, there was the Year of the Beetroot. I don’t know how many he sowed or what made every single one grow big, strong and healthy, but we had beetroot every meal for weeks. My mum struggled – she experimented with every way you could cook them and happened on a few that you certainly shouldn’t use, until we were served beetroot in cheese sauce, then the rebellion hit. My brother and sister disappeared for a while eventually coming back wearing T-shirts dyed pink in beetroot juice chanting ‘beetroot, beetroot’ like robots. I actually couldn’t

face betroot again for about 20 years. This drawing is one of a series called Drawing without filter – I drew it without wearing glasses, which means I created very intimate drawings working very close to both subject and paper and nothing disturbed my concentration on the subject.”

Born to rum Bethan Rees sits down with the Global Rum Ambassador and founder of Fulham’s RumFest, Ian Burrell, ahead of a libation-fuelled Rum Experience Week this month

R

um is an evocative and seductive spirit. It carries its drinker to the palm tree-lined, white-sand beaches of the Caribbean, sipping on a rum cocktail out of a pineapple without a care in the world. Rum makes you feel jovial, an instant party from a glass to your mouth which ripples out to the rest of your body. Rum, in my opinion, is the best spirit in the world. What makes it so endearing is its versatility, firstly in the very first stage of its life. In the Spanish and British Antilles, rum is traditionally distilled from molasses, whereas in the French Caribbean islands, sugarcane juice may be used. Production varies through using pot stills and continuous column stills, as do the maturation periods as seen in the difference between white rums (which are either unaged or briefly aged) such as Bacardi Superior versus darker rums such as El Dorado 15 Year Old. From ageing, to its uses, rum can be sipped straight or placed in a big punch. From the countries it’s from such as Jamaica to Britain, it’s all-

encompassing and adaptable. Someone who shares the same passion for the spirit as me, is Ian Burrell, the self-titled Global Rum Ambassador and the founder of the Rum Experience Week (1218 October) which ends on a climactic note of the RumFest (17-18 October), held right here in Fulham. Across the week, the London-wide festival celebrating the spirit will involve restaurants across the capital who will be hosting limited edition rum pairing menus and bars will also be getting involved by serving some delicious rum cocktails to the thirsty public. There’ll be supper clubs across town, masterclasses hosted by brand ambassadors and industry legends, pairing events with cigars, chocolates and marshmallows, for something a little bit different. This year will be the ninth annual RumFest which brings together over 400 of the finest rums, great food, educating seminars, cocktail making masterclasses, tastings and entertainment at Carnival Hour at the ILEC Conference Centre on - 18 -

Lillie Road, and opens its doors to rum aficionados and newcomers. The jam-packed programme also includes a rum auction hosted by the illustrious Christie’s, where you might be in with a chance of getting your hands on a bottle of rare rum. Ian hasn’t always been the Global Rum Ambassador, but the spirit has always played a big part in his life. “Being of Jamaican descent, rum has always been in my family,” he begins to tell me, his bright white smile stretched across his face. “I had my first rum when I was about four-days-old,” he laughs. Ian was planning to go to drama school after finishing his A-Levels, however, after a friend of his got him a job working in a bar, Pizzeria Uno in Soho, he enjoyed it so much and thought “I don’t really want to do anything else”, and the rest is history. Ian is somewhat of a Renaissance man in that alongside his career as a mixologist, he was also playing basketball in the British Basketball League, co-presenting a TV show on ITV with his cousin, athlete Du’aine Ladejo, and performing on stages around the world as a rapper by the name of The Dude. In fact, one of his songs, Rock da Juice, became so popular it was used on commercials, a PlayStation game and featured in the Scooby-Doo movie. “The entertainment part of my world actually helped me do what I do now, in teaching people about rum, sharing stories about rum, I’m kind of doing a performance for people,” he adds. So, what about this elusive title? I ask him where it came from. “When people ask me ‘who made you the global rum ambassador?’ I answer ‘no one’. I just call myself that. I go around the world on behalf of rum companies to talk and teach people about rum.” I also want Ian to answer the question on everyone’s mind, what is his favourite rum? But it’s not as easy as that. I predict that he’s going to say different rum for different occasions, and instead ask him: what

situations do you drink certain rums in? “There are so many different styles of rum and your mood will affect the style of rum you want to drink. If I’m at home, around 10pm, I’ll probably want a demerara, heavier-style rum, something like a Diplomático,” he starts to explain. “If I’m out partying, I want a lighterstyle rum, maybe a rum from the Latin countries in a cocktail like a mojito or a daiquiri. If I’m in a fun or jovial mood, I want something overproof like Wray & Nephew, which is unofficially the best rum in the world,” he says through his contagious laugh.

If I’m out partying, I want a lighter-style rum Ian also begins to tell me about a curious Jamaican tradition. “If you move into a new house or building, you pour rum on the foundations to get rid of the bad vibes, ghosts and energy, so we’re going to do that at the start of RumFest,” he says. “Using Wray & Nephew obviously.” Before I leave, I want to ask Ian about the rum naysayers, the people who just ‘don’t like rum’? “They don’t like the rums they’ve had and the way they’ve tried them. Not everyone can drink neat spirits and aromatic-style cocktails (with no fruit juice),” he explains. But, Ian uses his knowledge to teach the cynics about all the different styles and ways to drink rum. Has he always converted them? “100 per cent of the time,” he grins. RumFest runs from 17-18 October, 12noon-6pm, standard day tickets £49.95, VIP tickets from £75, 020 8351 2315, rumfest.co.uk. For more information on Rum Experience Week, visit rumexperienceweek.com

a Cheer for beer Bethan Rees gets a transatlantic taste at Wahleeah

C

harles Bukowski, writer and avid drinker, once mused: “Stay with the beer. Beer is continuous blood. A continuous lover.” I have to admit, I agree with the notoriously boozy poet. I’ve had a love affair with the hoppy stuff since I can remember. From a thimbleful of Guinness on Christmas Day to my first legal pint of Doom Bar in my local pub, beer has accompanied me on most of my life milestones. So, you can imagine the pure elation I felt when I heard Wahleeah was

Macaroni cheese balls

opening its doors to the beerloving public of Fulham. The brainchild of Cork-born chef Dave Ahern, previously of other culinary successes such as Burger Breakout and Oslo in Hackney, Wahleeah brings beer into its menu like I’ve never seen before. Forget the beerbattered items you may have had before, Dave is taking his love for hops to another level, which includes matching each dish to a different beer. But the question on everyone’s mind is, what’s with its name? “Wahleeah” is the phonetic spelling of a slang term from Brooklyn, wallear, which means to have a craving for a particular type of food. For example: “I’ve got a wallear for a burger.” I’m sceptical about calling this a “beerthemed” restaurant; this is no gimmick – it’s a fantastically well-thought out menu and concept, not a costume in sight. With a wall where customers can

pull their own pints, which springs the word “dangerous” to mind, I grab a pint of Wahleeah lager and take a seat. I start with beer-cured salmon with house pickles, which has the ideal amount tang and freshness, followed by a 42-day-aged ribeye steak, with a perfect pink hue and beer fondant potatoes, brocolli rabe with a stout steak sauce which was so beautifully sticky you could probably lay bricks with it. Puddings didn’t escape the beer treatment either: chocolate stout brownie with beer ice cream; heaven. I’ve got a wallear for Wahleeah, and I’ll find any excuse to return. 18 Farm Lane, SW6 1PP, 020 7381 5769, wahleeah.uk

shucking and diving In the early 19th century, oysters were a food staple of the working class, and but they’re considered a luxurious treat. Oyster season is upon us, and one neighbourhood restaurant is taking full advantage of our shelled friends: Bistrò by Shot. The allday eatery every day throughout October is serving up brand new set menus featuring various deals on oysters and sparkling wine. For those who want to try just a few shells, the restaurant serves six oysters and one glass of Prosecco for £15. For the hungrier among you, order 12 oysters and a bottle of Prosecco for £40, and if you’re feeling really indulgent, swap the Prosecco for a bottle of Champagne. Bottoms up! 28 Parsons Green Lane, SW6 4HS, 020 7371 7533, bistrobyshot.com - 20 -

Crown jewels As if we didn’t know that Fulham is a special place, we do now, as it’s the only one of the Royal China restaurants to serve dim sum in the evening. Famed for its authentic dishes, head chef Sam Chen is bringing his fresh-each-day-parcelsof-heaven to SW6’s hungry dinnertime diners. From honey roast pork puffs to scallop dumplings, indulge yourself in the Hong Kong cuisine to your heart’s content. The Journal recommends the prawn and chive dumplings, fried dough cheung fun and spare ribs in black bean sauce. Also, the restaurant is now offering a takeaway service at the weekends, available on Saturday from 12noon-3.45pm and 6pm10.45pm and on Sunday from 11am-4.45pm and 6pm-9.45pm. a walk in the park Francesca Lee indulges in steak and sushi at Maze Grill Park Walk

I

have a confession to make: I have always been nosy – or as I like to call it, a people watcher. It turns out that Maze Grill Park Walk is the ideal spot to do this kind of pastime (grandma, are you reading?). With its bi-folding doors that open out onto the street, I quickly find it’s the epitome of a neighbourhood restaurant, located moments from the Fulham Road. There’s the local businessman who orders an espresso, the couple who “come here all the time” and it’s the yummy mummy’s favourite hotspot. It’s clear that the staff know its clientele too. Sitting on the same site that was formerly Ramsay’s two Michelinstarred restaurant Aubergine, Maze Grill Park Walk opened in April this year. I start with a few starters (well, I am hungry) which comprise buffalo chicken fillets, smashed avocados and a selection of sushi. The fillets are tender and the

accompanying lime cuts through the spiciness of the meat; the sweet-potato chips provide a crunchy base for the smashed avocados (and are rather addictive – no surprise, given that they’re the “locals’ favourite”); and the sushi certainly sated my never-fading appetite. The main of 21-day dried British native breed rib-eye, where the cows were grass-fed and had their last six weeks on grain, is cooked to perfection on a 400-celsius Montague Grill, yet it’s the James and the Giant Peach-style ginormous onion rings and triple-cooked chips that really give it the wow factor. I would return just for those. I conclude my meal with a strawberry and brown-sugar Eton mess, which was creamy but a little too heavy after two fulfilling courses. Overall, the food is excellent, as were the attentive staff; it’s no wonder you’ll find Fulham residents there. 11 Park Walk, SW10 0AJ, 020 7255 9299, gordonramsayrestaurants.com

osting a supper club with a flair for finding perfect drinking and dining combinations, Fulhambased Cecile Faure of Emois Gourmands is a foodie force to be reckoned with. Her next event, on 19 November, promises to be loaded with luxury and exclusivity, and will be held at Aubaine in Dover Street, Mayfair. With just 24 places available for the wine tasting, we find out why a supper club is the only way to test your taste buds. What inspired you to start Emois Gourmands? It’s all about providing a unique and luxurious experience, combining authenticity and exclusivity. Emois Gourmands aims to slow down the pace of our lives and get back to the fundamentals of happiness: taking time to feel and live through our emotions. What made you decide to pair wines with jam and chutneys? Events organised by Emois Gourmands are never the same; we take our guests to new places and encourage them to broaden their horizons. In September, we invited people to come and taste a traditionallymade sparkling wine alongside 16 low-sugar jams, as well as a chutney to complement the cheese and savoury dishes. It was about stimulating the taste buds and letting people identify aromas according to their own physical experience and individual memory.

new places, learning about other cultures and meeting people. I enjoy sharing and always come back with a lot of lovely memories in my suitcase. I decided to take this further, so I launched Emois Gourmands a year ago. In what way do you feel the right alcoholic beverage can complement a dish? Wines, beers and spirits are not about alcohol, but about those many amazing aromas, simple or complex, that develop with care, patience and time. You cannot have those with any other kind of beverage. Where do you see Emois Gourmands heading in the future? Following the launch of our monthly newsletter, we are in the process of implementing a membership for people to be taken to places where they would not have necessarily ventured, as well as steadily increasing our range of products. The future holds everything bold and delicious. emoisgourmands.com

Your education both in culture and dining is extensive – what has been your favourite area to study? Learning about wines and meeting winemakers on-site, going through vineyards and understanding all there is to know about vine-growing and winemaking has been, and is still a source of great joy. When and why did you come up with the idea for Emois Gourmands? I have always travelled and I love discovering

Parent Trap: Nappy Valley Net NappyValleyNet.com has become an online sensation in the four years since founder Susan Hanage, aka. Annabel, launched it, with more than 130,000 visits to the site every month. An invaluable tool for parents based in south-west London who are seeking to swap tips and share advice, we’ve teamed up to post some of the most pressing topics posted on the site

Wed 9 Sept, 2015 9.36am The idea is that the pocket money will cover their expenses while living in London – so they don’t save any money, but aren’t out of pocket either. And £100 a week in London just doesn’t go that far in 2015 – a night out, a restaurant meal or two, gym membership, language classes and the odd coffee. Wed 9 Sept, 2015 10.10am

We’re looking to take on an au pair next year. We’ve found a lovely girl from Australia, agreed responsibilities and now we’re looking to understand what she should be paid, but we don’t have any idea how much. Should we be taking into account the number of hours, hourly rate, plus room and board cost? And then how do I value room and board? Obviously being in a rather expensive area this would mean her in-the-pocket pay would be a lot lower than if she had boarded somewhere cheaper? Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

is that an au pair works up to 25 hours and gets £80-£100 per week, and au pair plus works up to 35 hours and gets paid £100-£120 per week. Generally they should not have sole charge of children under two years old and should only do light house work as they’re not a nanny or a cleaner. They get two days off a week and get at least four weeks holiday. I agree that you shouldn’t treat her like a lodger, if anything in London you may give her a bit more due to the high cost of living. We gave our au pair extra funds for travel and for her phone. Good luck, when an au pair and a family work well together it is really brilliant.

Top replies: Tues 8 Sept, 2015 9.01pm You’re looking at this the wrong way. You’re welcoming her into your home to look after your children. She’s not coming over as a working London lodger who needs to pay her way. For au pairs, there tends to be a set price to be paid per week. Hopefully someone else can help you with that. Tues 8 Sept, 2015 9.23pm I think the general recommendation

- 25 -

Wed 9 Sept, 2015 10.22am You don’t want her to come over and feel resentment that she’s the poorest au pair in her friendship group. One of my neighbours had their au pair poached by another neighbour for an extra thirty quid a week and that caused quite a bit of tension on the street. Good luck!

All threads from NappyValleyNet.com; users’ names have been omitted to protect individuals’ identities and although opinions have not been altered, posts have been edited in line with the Residents’ Journal house style and some dates and times changed

How much do you suggest I should pay an au pair?

Either you go for an au pair or you don’t, but don’t get one and be tight. Your outlook seems like you want a person to look after your child until you get back from work, but you don’t seem willing to part with any cash. Be fair – if you can’t afford it, don’t do it. It doesn’t look very promising judging by your attitude.

Bethan Rees discovers a new treatment at the Amida Spa in the Chelsea Harbour Club

G

reeted by the smiley receptionist, I’m given a tour of the Amida Spa within the Chelsea Harbour Club; from the stunning wet spa including the aromatherapy room (think steam room but less hot and with oils fused into the air) which are available for members to use. However, the spa treatments are available for non-members too, and it has just launched its own range of treatments and products. I’m here to try the Amida Spa Golden Glow Wrap, which to me sounds a little more like an offering from a Mexican restaurant than something that’s going to relax me, but I’m open-minded and it turns out I’ve got every reason to be. The treatment room instantly melts away the stresses and strains of London living and puts me into Zen mode. My therapist asks if I have any areas of concern, and I tell her my shoulders are quite tense, which she puts down to sitting behind a desk tapping away at a keyboard all day, but you know what they say, readers: no pain, no gain. I undress and lie face-down on the massage table and then a white tea - 27 -

and jasmine candle is lit, which floods the room with tranquil aromas. The therapist cleanses my feet with hot mitts before starting the treatment. Using the Amida Spa Gold Body Scrub, with extracts of caviar, she exfoliates my back using circular motions and then politely asks me to turn around so that I’m facing the ceiling. She rubs the glowing scrub onto the front of my body, including my décolleté before asking me to jump into the spacious shower, which is the size of a studio apartment, while she leaves the room. I later return to the bed where the therapist applies Amida Gold Dry Body Oil and massages me as the knots in my back melt away. And just so that my face isn’t left out of the glory, she cleanses, tones, and applies an Amida Spa Cucumber Face Mask and, while it’s sinking in, she massages my head – I’m like putty in her hands; very, very relaxed putty. After she has removed the mask, she moisturises my face, and off I go to face the capital, with a relaxed back and that certain “glow”. £60, Watermeadow Lane, SW6 2RW, 020 7371 7700, harbourclub.com

The Grass is Greener Working in collaboration with Maccreanor Lavington Architects, Transport for London has proposed plans for “a considered, mixed-use development” at the former Parsons Green Depot, just off Parsons Green Lane and adjacent to the Former Parsons Gre Underground District Line. This has en Depot – Courtes y of Transport for London/Maccrea nor Lavington Arc occurred as a result of a city-wide hitects review of the TfL property estate with the aim of identifying a site that would be appropriate for redevelopment. A two-day public exhibition was held at Fulham Library on 11 and 12 September as the initial stage of the ongoing community consultation for the former Parsons Green Depot. The existing commercial properties on the site are currently leased to various businesses by TfL, but according to TfL these premises are in need of a serious makeover. The plan is to replace these buildings with a new development complete with shops, restaurants, a public route through the site (which will prioritise pedestrians and cyclists), new communal spaces and a series of new homes in a wide range of affordability. Adding to the vitality and character of Parsons Green, these proposals aim to create approximately 300 on-site jobs, as well as a broad platform for local businesses, from new start-ups to already well-established firms. Although the prospect of a new community site to replace this tired plot of Parsons Green has many benefits, the plan has its constraints. It would be located within a flood-risk area and be in close proximity to two nearby Conservation Areas. Tfl has also identified concern with the site’s irregular shape and its relationship with neighbouring properties. From a design perspective, the architects plan on drawing on existing architectural style influences in the area, such as terraced housing, apartment blocks and mansion blocks. parsonsgreendepot.co.uk

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings

Drawing of St Dunstan-in-the-West by SPAB Scholar Ptolomy Dean

Founded by William Morris, the SPAB protects the historic environment from decay, damage and demolition. It responds to threats to old buildings, trains building professionals, craftspeople, homeowners and volunteers and gives advice about maintenance and repairs. Since 1877 countless buildings have been saved for future generations.

Information about maintaining your home is available through events, courses, lectures, publications and telephone advice. To support our work why not join the SPAB? Members receive a quarterly magazine, our list of historic properties for sale and access to our regional activities.
