A unique art gallery featuring works by Fulham artists has opened its doors at the hoardings of the Tideway super sewer construction site on Carnwath Road. i have always been very creative, even

The fabrics closest to my heart are the hand-loomed organic cotton and bamboo fabrics made by women from the tulsi Mehar Mahila ashram in nepal, a social non-governmental organisation dedicated to helping deprived women who come from challenging backgrounds.

as a three-year-old i would make special outfits from paper and materials. My designing career began in nepal when i was 17. i was selected to design for the Miss nepal event. My creation was awarded the best design and, as a result, in 1998 i was chosen to be the official designer for the Miss nepal and Miss world pageants.

A Personal James Dundas tells the Journal what clients can expect from the unique wedding list services at his company’s luxurious King’s Road showroom william monroe

he Wedding Present Company, a luxury wedding-list concept with a King’s Road showroom that offers a fantastic bespoke service, was essentially born out of frustration – not exactly a word usually associated with the founding of a new business venture. But therein lies the unique nature of the business: key to the service provided is friendly, personal interaction, something which cofounder and owner James Dundas found in short supply when seeking to create his own wedding list alongside his wife Melanie 24 years ago. “Everything was very bland and boring,” he explains. “There wasn’t much out there and no one was really looking after people – it felt so impersonal and frustrating.”

They can expect a warm welcome and a friendly face who will guide them through the process Such inconveniences inspired James to set up his own company, with an emphasis on personalised, expert service from knowledgeable consultants. Very few wedding shops and showrooms greet visitors with a glass of bubbly (or a cup of tea if New Year’s resolutions are being strictly adhered to), but those who step into the soft surroundings of the company’s showroom

on King’s Road will receive a Champagne reception, both literally and figuratively speaking. For James, this is what it’s all about and is emblematic of the high standards of bespoke service the company delivers. “We really look after people,” he says. “They can expect a warm welcome and a friendly face who will guide them through the process. We get to know their likes and dislikes and then we narrow things down for them, which makes it much easier and saves them time.” The Wedding Present Company is banging the drum for personalised service, and key to this is the showroom itself as a space. Layout-wise it imitates various rooms that you might find in a classic house, so couples can see pieces in their natural environment and decide what fits their criteria best.

It keeps us on our toes and looking for new ideas and new products.” The fact that all of the married employees at the showroom have done their own wedding lists through the company is testament to the positive experience. It also gives consultants a unique perspective on the process. “It’s great because they’ve seen both sides of the table,” James says. “They’ve been a client and also worked there, so they’ve got a much better insight into what couples are after. They’ve been through it and they can pass that experience on. We like to see

“It’s an amazing space,” James says. “We’ve got brilliant consultants who get people straight to what they need. A lot of couples do one or two meetings in our showroom and then do the rest themselves online, which is a great way

of doing it. It’s one of those things you need to go along and experience. You come into the showroom, there’s a warm welcome and it’s an enjoyable event. That’s the key to our service.” After a visit to the showroom, couples can manage their list online from the comfort of their own home, including editing their gift selections and viewing the status of guest purchases. With Shrove Tuesday (13th February) creping up fast, the Journal heads to Chelsea Creperie for a pancake party WILLIAM MONROE

hrove Tuesday – or, to grant it it’s secular, modern day epithet, Pancake Day – conventionally brings with it a whole litany of cooking debacles in kitchens across the country. Those who voluntarily step up to the stove will shudder at the memory of blackened pancakes, incinerated favourite pans, far too much maple syrup and, if you’re particularly fervent when it comes to flipping, your questionable creations hitting the ceiling. I’ve got form in this regard, having once tossed a perfectly formed pancake – golden, fluffy, light, essentially the real deal – straight into my dog’s bowl: I quite literally made a dog’s breakfast of it. Despite its many manifest qualities, Pedigree lamb jelly isn’t the best option to pair

with pancake. So, avoid such crepe catastrophes and let the pros from Chelsea Creperie on Fulham Road take charge. The sky is leaden and bedecked with sleet when my friend and I visit on a drab Sunday afternoon, but a warm welcome at the recently opened creperie and fresh smoothies – ‘Tropical’ for me and ‘Good Feeling’, consisting of strawberries and banana, for my friend – brighten up proceedings. We’ve been advised to tackle a savoury crepe first, followed by a sweet one for dessert. I’m tempted by the ‘Chelsea’ crepe, with stilton and diced chorizo, but the ‘Raclette’ crepe, consisting of raclette cheese, gratin dauphinois, crystallised onions, gherkin and ham, has my name on it. Melted cheese and crystallised onions are a new favourite pairing – and who knew

that dauphinois and gherkin could work so well in a pancake? Certainly not I. My friend, who’s opted for a simpler cheese and ham option, also gives the thumbs up to her crepe. Time for a sweet treat after our savoury sensations, and I opt for the ‘Chelsea Mango’, with fresh mango, blueberries, mango gelato and raspberry sauce. I’m warned about the size as I order and the waiter isn’t wrong – I embark on all-out warfare in my battle to finish the fresh-tasting, moreish creation. The only disappointment is the raspberry sauce, which tastes rather synthetic and verges on sickly sweet. Chelsea Creperie is certainly the place to go on Pancake Day, or any other day for that matter, if you’ve got a crepe craving. The food is tasty and inventive, the service is laid-back and friendly and, despite only recently opening, the place is doing a thriving trade. If it’s a toss-up between homemade DIY disasters and the real deal at Chelsea Creperie, I know where I’d rather be.

At the heart of Fromental is the desire to make beautifully designed and beautifully crafted products, whether that be wallcoverings, fabrics or objects. The execution itself is a long process, with hand painting and quite often hand embroidery in fine silks.

Fromental was my greatgrandfather’s surname. He

died when I was very young, but he left me with lasting and affectionate memories. When we started the company, I wanted a name I admired; a name I wouldn’t want to let down; a name to keep me going.

I love the work we have done for The Goring hotel. It is a true British institution. One project in particular was the wallcovering for the entrance lobby. A seemingly very

The Journal visits Marcus’ Nail Studio, the new nail bar beneath the well-known hair salon in Fulham victoria sviggum

s i trudge through the streets of London on a frightfully cold evening, Marcus’ Hair Studio calls out to me like a beacon as i spot the salon chandelier from across the road and warm light emanating from within. But i am not here for a hair appointment, rather a manicure and pedicure in the recently opened nail bar on the lower ground floor. After a friendly greeting from Marcus himself, i am led downstairs, where the interior design is just as stunning as upstairs, reminding me of a luxurious French boudoir in a sophisticated palette of cream, beige, brown and gold, and decorated with personally selected antique pieces. victoria Chapman is the nail beautician, who, once i sit down, kindly asks if i would like something to drink. i’m delighted to find that wine is an option and am promptly served a glass of red. we start with the manicure first, which begins with a file and application of a cuticle gel. victoria prefers not to soak the nails as she finds that, because of their porous nature, the polish applies better without – with more than 20 years’ worth of experience under her belt, i take her word for it and leave my hands in hers. i ask what colour she recommends and victoria proposes one of her current favourites – Dark Lava, a

I’m soon being kneaded in all the right places while Victoria removes my existing polish wonderfully rich mahogany with hints of burgundy by CND Shellac. i ask how she and Marcus met and she says she had been coming to him as a customer and he mentioned his idea to expand. She admits both herself and Marcus are perfectionists and so they work well together. As we finish up the manicure with a soothing hand massage, the stresses of the day melt away as i take in the scent of the mango and coconut moisturiser while i sip my complimentary rioja. we then move into the pedicure room where i sink into a comfy leather massage chair. i’m soon being kneaded in all the right places while victoria removes my existing polish. we decide to have a bit of fun and choose an opal blue tone for the toes called i Believe in

Manicures by OPi. we continue to chat about anything and everything, from fell walking in the Lake District (one of the things she misses most about her home in Cumbria) to music and art, and before you know it my feet have been filed, massaged and my toes are looking wonderfully polished, the colour sure to brighten up the winter months ahead. Having entered such a tranquil state, i’m reluctant to put on my boots and coat again. COMMUNITY CROWDFUNDING The deputy leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, Cllr Sue Fennimore, on a unique new crowdfunding platform in aid of local projects and schemes

o you have an idea for a community project? Hammermsith & Fulham Council has set up a new crowdfunding platform, the H&F Hive, which will help community groups bring their ideas for improving local spaces or for exciting community events to life. We are keen to offer real support and encouragement. We have £200,000 available (paid for mostly by developers through the Community Infrastructure Levy) for projects on the H&F Hive, and we have already awarded more than £25,000 to local community groups. It’s great to see so many Fulham residents raising money for local schemes. The most ambitious of these is the Living Space project at St Dionis church in Parsons Green, which will create new community spaces within the church, including a state-of-the-art kitchen, new meeting rooms and improved access. Project co-ordinator Caroline David commented: “The new facilities will benefit the whole community, and we’re very excited at the opportunity to get everyone involved in our fundraising campaign.”

Another local group raising funds is the new Fulham Gymnastics Club, based at The Hurlingham Academy. The not for profit club launched in January and has already been attended by 120 local children. The aim of the club is to provide the best coaching and facilities for aspiring local gymnasts, so they are raising money for two pieces of gym equipment – a tumbling mat and a junior beam. Club spokesperson, Clair Gordon, recently told us that the H&F Hive is the “ideal way to not only raise money, but also to raise our profile and build community support for the new club.” Other local projects looking for community support include plans for a new kitchen at the Sands End Adventure Playground, which will enable children to cook the produce they grow in the community garden, an outdoor gym

ammersmith & Fulham Council has outflanked a residential rights of light challenge to the proposed new Chelsea FC stadium. Councillors have decided on a compulsory purchase of the air rights over part of Stamford Bridge and the adjacent railway line. A High Court injunction over rights of light by residents of Stamford Cottages, next door to the football ground, threatened to bench plans for a £1bn 60,000-seat Herzog & de Meurondesigned upgrade to Abramovich’s team’s home. H&F’s decision to take back control was apparently rubber-stamped within five minutes at a Council meeting, and effectively quashes the rights of light legal challenge. The Council’s new air rights will be leased back to the football club and Network Rail, allowing the stadium development to push on. A solicitor acting for the Stamford Cottages family has said that they will “take all legal action available”; that could
