Elsewhere, we gather thoughts from instructors on pre- and post-natal yoga in SW6 (p.22) and chat to Dickie Bannenberg of interior yacht design company Bannenberg & Rowell (p.17). Meanwhile, Thai Square is the flavour of the month when it comes to gastronomic matters (pg.19). Enjoy the issue!

NOV 16
Moon Hooch
Horn and percussion trio Moon Hooch will be taking over Under the Bridge with their explosive combination of jazz, funk and electronic dance music. The popularity of their impromptu shows lead to a banning order on New York’s subway system, due to the public order hazard created by the crowds who flocked to hear them. There’ll be no such controversy on 16 November, just great music and a great vibe. NOV 17
Dreadzone
Fusion is the watchword when it comes to British band Dreadzone, who combine dub, reggae, electronic dance, folk and rock. Despite the band’s career spanning three decades, the group is showing no signs of letting up and will be performing songs from their powerful latest album, Dread Times. NOV 20
Grandmaster Flash
Join hip hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash for an interactive, visual party featuring breaks from original 70s records and the original records sleeves shown on screen. The Hip Hop, People, Places and Things evening will immerse participants in the history of hip hop and combine with live tunes from Grandmaster Flash himself.
NOV 24
Morgan James
New York-based soul singer and song-writer Morgan James will take to the stage to perform hits from her studio album Reckless Abandon, which is her first as an independent artist. Morgan performed all of her own background vocals and harmonies and co-wrote all 12 tracks. The album flits between genres in a unique expression of the artist that combines a powerhouse voice with theatrical swing.
NOV 30
Martha High with Osaka Monaurail
Soul singer Martha High and Japanese funk group Osaka Monaurail will perform from the new Martha High album, Tribute to my Soul Sisters. Martha spent more than 30 years performing with ‘Godfather of Soul’ James Brown, and the collaborative album pays tribute to Lyn Collins and Marva Whitney who, along with Martha, were part of the James Brown’s Funky Divas Tour of Europe in 2005.

C
hristmas is drawing ever closer and the festive buzz is set to grip SW6 once again. LOCALE Candles and decorations will add to the festive welcome at Locale this Christmas. Head chef Cristiano Mattei has designed a special threecourse Christmas menu with a varied selection of innovative dishes for just £26.50 per person. New Year’s Eve also promises to be quite the occasion, with Locale adding a touch of glamour to proceedings with a black tie dress code. A three-course meal, priced at £50 and including a glass of bubbles, will feature options such as a decadent lobster and Prosecco risotto, beef fillet with rich dauphinoise potatoes, and a passion fruit and chocolate cheesecake. Whether you choose to host a New Year’s Eve party with friends and family, or you’ve been trusted with organising the office Christmas party, Locale has something for everyone this social season. 222 Munster Road, SW6 6AY, 020 7381 6137, localefulham.com

VAGABOND The award-winning retailer and wine bar Vagabond offers a selection of over 100 wines by the glass. There will also be a special Christmas canapé menu available as an accompaniment to your tipples of choice. If you’re after more substantial options on the food front, then opt for one of Vagabond’s signature charcuterie and cheese sharing boards. There’s something here for all, from bespoke tastings – the ‘Xmas Hits: A Festive Starter Pack’ event on 6 December offers inspiration for your Christmas wine list – to group bookings or your own private hire. 18-22 Vanston Place, SW6 1AX, 020 7381 1717, vagabondwines.co.uk

Dickie Bannenberg of luxury interior yacht design company Bannenberg & Rowell talks us through following in his father’s footsteps, remarkable client requests including jellyfish tanks and his love of the sea william monroe
How did you get into interior yacht design? © David Churchill
My father asked me to join him in the studio (then in the heart of King’s Road) in the mid/late 1980s. I worked as a project manager, essentially implementing with the shipyards, what my dad had designed. I’m by no means an out-and-out designer, but I’m steeped in Bannenberg design philosophy and know what I want coming out of our studio.
You’re involved in aircraft and residential design too? © visionspictures.com
What projects have you been working on recently? It’s a pretty varied diet: exterior design on three separate projects ranging from a 40-metre submarine support catamaran to an explorer yacht which is over 100 metres. We’ve got yacht projects in build in Holland, Germany and Italy, and residential projects in Switzerland and Hong Kong.
What are the typical demographics of clients? Typical demographics don’t exist – we work with clients from all over the world. Historically, there have been periods when there was a pattern of nationalities, but I don’t think the current decade is as easy to label.
© Kenny Laurenson
What’s the most remarkable request you’ve had from a client?
© Feadship
We get a few! Some of them don’t make it into reality, including a vertical jellyfish tank extending through four decks. We’ve got a hydroponic garden on our drawing board at the moment, so that a large yacht can be self-sufficient in certain fruit and vegetables.
getting to know a client extremely well over a four or five-year period and designing something very bespoke for them. It’s got to be practical of course, and compliant with a raft of regulations. But, above all, you are very aware that you have the job of realising someone’s dream. It’s quite a responsibility.
Talk us through the intricacies of interior yacht design.
What’s the biggest challenge you face as an interior yacht designer?
It’s a very detailed and personal process. You’re
To paraphrase my father – “the next one”.
Yes, that’s right. The last design we produced was for a rebuilt DC-6: a four-engine transatlantic airliner from the early 1960s. We gave it a brand new interior inspired, variously, by Mad Men and Sean Connery’s tailoring palette. We usually have a couple of residential projects on the go – often through connection with yacht owners.
Are you yourself a nautical fan? I can’t help being someone who loves the sea, but I don’t actually have a boat. But holidays near the sea feature heavily in our lives – most recently a couple of weeks in Paros, Greece. The biggest boat to feature then was a small launch for moving from bay to bay, drinking Retsina and diving for sea urchin shells. 2 Bridge Studios, 318-326 Wandsworth Bridge Road, SW6 2TZ, 020 7736 0005, bannenbergandrowell.com

FOOD & DRINK
Warning: the following may make you hungry and thirsty
Locale’s signature black ink tagliatelle has quickly become one of the most popular dishes on the restaurant’s new menu. Head chef Cristiano Mattei is passionate about fresh pasta, and one of his favourite concoctions is the black ink tagliatelle pasta coloured with ink from cuttlefish. According to Cristiano, the ink gives the pasta its beautiful deep, black colour and also adds a subtle flavour of the sea. This autumn Cristiano will be serving the tagliatelle with a crayfish, calamari and prawn bisque, seasoned with garlic and chili and topped with rocket. Enjoy it alongside a glass of bonedry organic Muscadet, with a floral nose.

• Always use fresh eggs • Be patient – good homemade pasta takes time! Let the dough rest before shaping it and make sure you get all of the air bubbles out • Don’t be afraid to use a lot of semolina while shaping the pasta. It keeps it from sticking together and the flour will come off when boiling it 222 Munster Road, SW6 6AY, 020 7381 6137, localefulham.com

a taste of thai
Authenticity and tasty Thai cuisine are the order of the day at Thai Square’s Fulham branch WILLIAM MONROE
M
y brother and I are practically the first through the door at Thai Square’s Fulham branch on a Thursday evening: and first impressions are good. A combination of European and Thai-inspired designs, including bronze Buddhist sculptures and traditional carvings, are married to soft lighting and a sparkling floor painted with golden leaves which combines to create an elegant, intimate effect. Food at the restaurant revolves around traditional Thai cooking and ingredients are imported daily from Thailand to that effect. A vast menu threatens briefly to overwhelm, particularly given that I’m something of a novice when it comes to Thai cuisine, but help is at hand in the form of an attentive waitress, who directs us towards some of the house favourites. Two popular choices are apparently the Lobster Panang – grilled lobster topped with traditional Thai panang curry and garnished with kaffir lime leaves and coconut milk – and the rather alarming sounding Drunken Duck, but we opt for another of the house specials, the Seafood Platter to share comprising scallops, prawn tempura, grilled squid and crisp fried crab cakes. The squid is a little chewy and flavourless, but the spicy scallops are excellent, as are the more savoury crab cakes. The restaurant is filling up with a mixture of couples and groups of friends and an accompanying Chardonnay, recommended by our waitress as a good match for our food, is slipping down nicely as our mains arrive: Pad Thai with jumbo prawns for myself, and Panang
My brother lays in with a spoon, despite having previously declared himself out of action Nong Gae for my brother, which is braised lamb shank in a rich curry sauce. My Pad Thai, consisting of Chanburi rice noodles, crushed peanuts, bean curd, bean sprouts and egg, is superb: flavoursome and combining beautifully with the king prawns. Its freshness is noticeable and my brother also enjoys the lamb, although it’s not for the fainthearted when it comes to spice. Large portions are always well received on my
part, but, as good as it was, we certainly didn’t need the side of mixed vegetables in a garlic sauce. After such filling food I usually eschew dessert, but the Kway Tord, banana fritters with vanilla ice cream, prove to be too much of a temptation. I’m justified in my choice: they’re a triumph and my brother lays in with a spoon, despite having previously declared himself out of action when it came to dessert. Thai Square is yet another notch in Fulham’s culinary bow when it comes to the array of excellent dining options available in the area. Once it filled up there was a lovely ambience deserving of the interior décor and the food certainly delivers. It would be perfect for a date night, but one could just as easily bring along a large group of friends or family for a feast of authentic Thai cuisine. 563 Fulham Road, SW6 1ES, 020 7386 9900, thaisq.com

Laura Colucci, pre and post-natal yoga teacher at Slice Urban Fitness and begin by taking it slow and easing into the practice.
Tell me about the pre-natal and post-natal classes that you offer Pregnancy Yoga classes are designed to make space in the expectant mother’s body. All postures are safe for pregnancy and different variations are provided based on the various stages. The classes include pelvic floor strengthening exercises and Pranayama (breath) work to encourage relaxation and concentration. The use of props and support (bolsters) are used throughout the session for maximum comfort. Classes finish with restorative postures to leave women feeling rested and rejuvenated. Post-natal classes are for babies from six weeks to crawling and are designed to relieve tension in new mothers’/fathers’ bodies.
What’s the community spirit like at classes?
When’s the best time to practice post-natal yoga, and when should expectant mothers be practicing? It is suggested to begin yoga at 12 weeks, or after the first scan. Mothers can begin post-natal yoga after their six-week check up with their GP. It’s recommended to wait eight-to-10 weeks after a caesarean birth
Pregnancy Yoga is a great place to meet other expectant mothers. It’s a forum to ask questions and hear what other women are experiencing. Mum and baby classes are also very warm, nurturing and relaxed environments, and fathers are also invited to attend!
What are the benefits? Yoga during pregnancy allows the mother to take time to herself and connect with the baby growing within. Women often leave saying they feel like they have found more space for their baby to move – they feel taller and lighter. It also relieves overall muscular tension, swelling in the feet and legs and strengthens the body. Post-natal classes relieve the common tensions of being a new mother caused by holding, feeding and carrying the baby. 10 years and pre-natal and postnatal yoga for five years. It’s hugely rewarding to help women stay healthy, relaxed and empowered during such an exciting stage of life.
Karen Preece Smith, instructor at The Hot Spot Yoga What are the benefits of hot yoga in terms of pre-natal classes?
Lulu Winfield, instructor at The Power Yoga Company Tell me about the pre-natal and post-natal classes that you offer We have a fantastic schedule of pre- and post-natal classes at TPYC to cater for all women who want to practice yoga from 12 weeks onwards in a safe environment. After the little ones arrive, we also offer two welcoming post-natal classes. Lots of our mothers find this is an essential break from their busy city lives where they can switch off, focus on their babies and meet new friends.
Hot yoga uses heat to provide a safe environment in which to work through resistance in the body. Each posture is done in a specific order, systematically preparing the body for the next posture. The sequence is modified during pregnancy with an emphasis on controlled breath through each movement and strengthening for the spine and suppleness of the pelvis to help during labour. Breathing techniques and meditation help calm the mind and strengthen the bond with your unborn child.
How long have you been teaching pre-natal and post-natal classes – is it a hobby as well as a job? I have been teaching hot yoga for
Being a mother of two must place you in a good position when it comes to catering classes accordingly? Every pregnancy is unique, but, being a mother of two toddlers, I understand the sense of ‘losing yourself ’ in a physical sense during pregnancy. Suddenly you are thinking for two of you and your body can feel like it’s not your own any more with these strange aches and pains and bump! Practicing hot yoga throughout both my pregnancies allowed me to feel physically strong, supple and empowered by my changing body and life inside.
Does The Hot Spot Yoga have anything unique about it (apart from heat) that caters to pre and post-natal pregnancy? No. There is no need for specialist equipment at the studio: pregnant women take part in regular classes with the modified postures. The Hot Spot Yoga, 25 Heathman’s Road, SW6 4TJ, 020 3696 6050, thehotspotyoga.co.uk
You set up the pre and post-natal yoga department at TPYC, is this something you specialise in? I have been working with pregnant women since 2000 and teaching at TPYC since it first opened in 2007. I am passionate about this work and as a mother, doula, hypnobirthing and birth education teacher, I know that our women get expert teaching and more than just yoga.
Are there any associated risks? Our classes are safe and effective for all women and we network with local physios and osteopaths, who sometimes give talks at the studio. A mother may, for example, attend pregnancy yoga with
chronic pelvic girdle pain and we can adapt the postures so that she is able to enjoy a safe and tailored practice.
Are babies welcome at the postnatal classes?
to them. The babes are welcomed with open arms (quite literally) but the yoga is all about nourishing the mother, releasing tense muscles and gently restoring strength. All mothers are super heroes and we remind them of that in these classes.
Our post-natal classes are all about mum – but babies definitely come too! New mothers are so endlessly giving that this is a much needed hour that is dedicated

WATERSIDE PROPERTIES James Davies, office head, Knight Frank Fulham “[…] there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” – Toadie, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame Kenneth Grahame was quite right of course, there is something wonderful about being on or at least near the water. Even if you aren’t so keen on the high seas, I’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t enjoy a river view. Luckily, there are some spectacular stretches of the River Thames and all of them offer a slightly different way of life based around the river. Crossing under Putney Bridge and heading towards Hammersmith, the riverbank suddenly becomes less built-up, especially on the southern side. This is where the Thames teems

ammersmith & Fulham’s planners have approved a double-headed new residential development in the Sands End area; Edith Summerskill House and Watermeadow Court are the first elements of a 15-year housing-led regeneration Joint Venture between the Council and Stanhope Plc. The 50/50 JV, operating under the “HFS Developments” banner, will now crack on with delivering the two sites: 219 market-sale apartments at Watermeadow Court, and 133 units (80 per cent social housing) in a 20-storey tower at Edith Summerskill House. Watermeadow Court sits about 150 metres from the river. Approved plans drawn up by architects Darling Associates involve three new buildings

All units will, HFS says, be offered to local Hammersmith & Fulham residents first; affordable flats in Edith Summerskill House will be “offered first to people living on the Clem Attlee estate and then to Fulham residents.” The Council-owned Watermeadow Court site was declared surplus to requirements back in 2008, and earmarked for disposal. A gateway to home
Bishops Gate on Fulham High Street becomes SW6’s most coveted new address
b
ishops Gate on Fulham High Street comprises an exclusive and architecturally striking collection of 42 highspecification, stylish apartments and 10 townhouses, punctuated by two historic gatehouses, in a prime position just moments from Bishop’s Park. Behind the meticulously restored gatehouses, Bishops Gate seamlessly integrates the highest levels of design and finish with its striking architecture, alongside beautifully crafted interiors by the critically acclaimed interior design company WISH. The site, which spans over nine hectares, sits adjacent to Bishop’s Park and features sprawling gardens, riverside walks, family play areas and tennis courts, as well as the setting of Fulham Palace – housing 1,300 years of British history.
Bishops Gate has been crafted to cater to the specific demands of modern family living Comprising one, two and three bedrooms, the apartments at Bishops Gate are exquisitely designed, merging tailored and luxurious materials with outstanding contemporary craftsmanship to provide the perfect homely oasis. The 10 contemporary townhouses at Bishops Gate have been inspired by the
36
traditional London townhouse that has been revered for centuries. Nick Jordan of WISH commented: “Subtle, classical details thoughtfully make references to the heritage architectural elements of the site, providing a seamless and elegant connection between old and new.” Bishops Gate has been crafted to cater to the specific demands of modern family living and has been designed with space and usability in mind. Designers WISH also commented: “The interiors blend understated luxury with a clean and contemporary aesthetic, showcasing a modern and purist backdrop consisting of a fresh, light palette paired with crisp and refined detailing. Touches of opulence such as herringbone porcelain tiles and K soul composite worktops enhance the feel of modern luxury.”
Clemmie Louch of Savills’ South West London Residential Development team commented: “So far we have seen much of the interest in Bishops Gate coming from the local market, in particular downsizers and young professionals. Bishops Gate offers that rare combination of modern practical living and additional amenities, such as a concierge service and off-street parking.” The juxtaposition of the apartments, punctuating the front of the development, with the carefully staggered townhouses to the rear, creates an exclusive, secure feel, whilst attractive landscaping and paving seamlessly link the different elements of the development, allowing residents to feel part of the new neighbourhood and wider community. Residents of both the apartments and townhouses will also benefit from a bespoke concierge service located in one of the gatehouses. The marketing suite, furnished show house and apartment are available to view at Bishops Gate Marketing Suite, 88 Fulham High Street, SW6 3LF. If the price
is right Stephanie Nash, associate and head of lettings at Strutt & Parker’s Fulham office, offers tips for landlords and gives us the low-down on the lettings market william monroe
S
tephanie Nash, the head of lettings at Strutt & Parker’s Fulham office, has some fairly frank advice for would-be landlords when negotiating the churning waters of the current market. “Landlords need to be aware that they have to do work to properties to make sure they’re presented well and in good condition,” she says. “The market has changed slightly and you may well have to invest money into the property to get that return back. A lot of our clients are wising up to the fact that, if you’ve got a really good tenant who might be offering something that’s marginally off the asking price, it’s worth looking at. A good tenant with a minimal or no void period is definitely worth considering, rather than holding out for the absolute high rate.” What then are the key pieces of advice for landlords attempting to let a property and place themselves at the pinnacle of the pile when it comes to competition? “For us it’s the three Ps,” Stephanie replies. “That’s pricing, presentation and photographs. It’s the online traction that you’re trying to
40
achieve. There is demand, but it has become increasingly competitive for landlords. There are people that are taking on longer tenancies and those who are rightly fussy with what they’re looking for. We’ve had people on our books for six to eight months waiting for the right property to come up. They’re seeing which landlord is going to give them the best offer for the price they want to pay. It is a slight waiting game. There are always people needing to move, and there are good tenants out there, it’s just about wising up to what’s going on.” With an office based on Fulham Road, Stephanie says that the nucleus

of her market can be found in nearby Parsons Green and the stretch from Fulham Road down to Munster Road. The area dubbed ‘The Villes’, featuring streets including Rosaville, Marville, Brookville and Parkville, is also extremely popular with prospective tenants. Stephanie explains, “That area is predominantly the mid-family house market, so it’s mainly three to four-bedroom properties, anything

from 1,350 to 1,650 sq ft. You’re so close to Parsons Green and Fulham Broadway there, but also set back so you’ve got that nice community feel.” When it comes to stock, diversity is very much the watchword. “We’re lucky in Fulham because we have a real mix of properties,” Stephanie says. “We have a lot of one-bedroom and two-bedroom properties, but we’ve also got new-builds and large family houses in Bishop’s Park and the Peterborough Estate. Three-bedroom properties are always in demand because they appeal to both professionals and families. If we take away the family house market from June to September, one and two-beds
are really popular. At the moment we’ve got a mixture of one-beds from £350 per week up to large riverside penthouse apartments at £4,500 per week. There’s interest across the spectrum.” In terms of migration from other parts of London, Stephanie notes that there’s a good deal of traffic from Chelsea, but equally substantial interest comes from Fulham residents who already have roots in the area. “You get couples who will move into the area, upsize to small family houses, then upsize again to the larger family houses,” Stephanie explains. ‘There’s a lot of people who stay within the area when moving.”
Stephanie’s local knowledge is verging on the encyclopedic, having lived in Fulham for five years and worked at Strutt & Parker’s Fulham office for three and a half years. “I’ve spent most of my life in south west London so I’ve seen it grow as I’ve grown,” she tells me. “Fulham’s a great area. There’s a Michelin star pub in the Harwood Arms, bars, restaurants, cafés. Waitrose is expanding with a sushi area and a wine bar. It’s such an exciting time to be renting a property in Fulham.” 701 Fulham Road, SW6 5UL, 020 7731 7100, struttandparker.com
