jumping for jazz
Emma Smith is one of the leading jazz vocalists of her generation – the Journal finds out about an upcoming performance with the 606 Club at Fulham Palace on 29 July and her career to date william monroe
What are you looking forward to the most about performing at Fulham Palace?
Who’s your favourite jazz singer or inspiration? Frank Sinatra is a huge influence on me; my grandfather was on tour with him for 20 years, so by osmosis it came into my system.
I’m excited to take the 606 Club atmosphere onto a larger platform, because it’s really special. The 606 vibe is unmatched by any jazz club in this country; it’s so organic and raw. I’m hoping to bring that community feeling to the stage at Fulham Palace.
You’re also one of the hosts of BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Now? Yes, it’s a weekly, musiciansbased show. It’s quite rare to have a show led by successful, working musicians – the insight is profound and you get into the crux of it, the musical element and the composing process. People are really responding to that. It also gives us a chance to platform some unheard, cutting edge UK talent.
Do you play a lot of al fresco concerts? On the continent I’ve played a lot of outdoor festivals. I sing in a group called The Puppini Sisters, which is a three-part harmony group. We’re famous for performing modern tunes, but with 1940s harmony arrangements. I always really enjoy summer outdoor festivals as people are in the mood to have fun and immerse themselves in something unusual.
© Mark Sears
Emma Smith, © 606 Club
What’s been your career highlight to date? Singing alongside Michael Bublé at the O2 Arena with The Puppini Sisters was up there. It was astounding, standing on stage in front of 25,000 people. I could get used to that!
Talk us through your set for the evening. It’s going to be double bass, drums, piano, and the wonderful Alex Garnett on the saxophone. He’s my favourite saxophonist to play with. He’s got a lack of seriousness about himself which is something I really aspire to. The show is mainly going to be a a tribute to Nancy Wilson, whose music I have loved since I was a little girl.
What would you describe your singing style as? I’m a very extroverted performer. I like to get the audience involved even if it’s just a case of chatting in between tunes or having a sip of someone’s wine from the table in front of me! The style

of music I perform is based on jazz and swing music but I can’t help but be influenced by the times I’ve grown up in, so there’s a heavy dosage of ‘twist’ in there.

I love most racket and recreational sports and am a qualified badminton coach, squash coach and regular table tennis player. But my greatest passion is tennis. I decided after many years playing in the Middlesex League that I wanted to teach what I had learned and influence others to take up this wonderful game.
You also offer Mini Tennis sessions for children aged eight and under? Yes, it’s a great introduction to the game where there’s a practical focus but the emphasis is largely on having fun. They use small rackets and soft tennis balls and play on a much smaller court with mini nets.
Do you see an increase in interest around Wimbledon? There is always a spike in interest around Wimbledon from both young and old alike. And why not? It’s the premier event in the tennis world and it’s wonderful to have Andy Murray leading the field as reigning champion and world number one. He’s a great ambassador for our youngsters to follow.
Is it rewarding coaching tennis to eager children? Yes, you can really see their progress and feel motivated by their enthusiasm. I had one little girl come to me when she was four and she became national champion for her age group. She continues to

ver a century since Fulham Albion Cricket Club folded in 1908, the sport is back in the area after the launch of Fulham Cricket Club. Its founder Rohan Kapadia, who has been a teacher in the borough for 15 years and has worked with the MCC, ICC and a number of clubs, explains that it’s as much a social enterprise as a sporting one: “Our aims are to build community through cricket, but also to potentially have the best amateur cricket club in London.” England batsman Nick Compton and exEngland international Lydia Greenway have both lent their backing to the initiative. The club’s aim to provide positive opportunities for all sections of the community has seen it gain a lot of traction. “We have 11 state schools and 11 private schools represented,” says Rohan. “We’re trying to maintain the spirit of cricket and the gentlemanly approach, but most importantly, everyone’s having loads of fun.” Qualified coaches and ambassadors include a number of former professionals, such as ex-Sussex and Kent player Callum Jackson and Iresh Saxena, who played in more than 100 domestic matches in India, including the IPL. time for tea A rainy day doesn’t dampen spirits as the Journal enjoys Whittard Afternoon Tea at The Chelsea Harbour Hotel william monroe
a

fternoon tea is a centuriesold and quaint tradition eponymous with Britain, which is enjoyed by most, if not all, to this day. Upon hearing that The Chelsea Harbour Hotel had partnered up with renowned British tea brand Whittard of Chelsea, I jumped at the chance to indulge in the Whittard Afternoon Tea at the five-star hotel. The weather was against us in the form of a pervasive light drizzle, so we weren’t able to sit out on the terrace overlooking Chelsea Harbour Marina – a shame as it looks like a lovely spot. The interior of the Chelsea Riverside Brasserie is however elegant and, with its large artworks adorning the walls and stylish fittings, is as good an indoor setting for afternoon tea as any.
I was only too happy to fill in for her and offer the coup de grâce Unperturbed by the rain (which is as much a British tradition as afternoon tea), we pressed on and ordered a refreshing Cucumber Mint tea with sweet apple and cucumber and an aromatic and fruity Piccadilly Blend with flavours of rose, strawberry and lotus. A whole host of other tea options are available, with classic blends and fruit and herbal infusions supplemented by speciality teas including Garden Party Oolong, a Chinese blend with notes of papaya and pineapple, and Nilgiri Kala Moti, a rare tea from South India’s Nilgiri Hills. Bellinis are also on offer for those who prefer their afternoon tea with something stronger. Our teas appeared alongside an impressive three-tier cake stand piled

high with an array of traditional finger sandwiches, cakes and pastries. Who’s going to turn their nose up at a warm, freshly-made scone with clotted cream and jam? We certainly didn’t. From the sandwich options, which included British ham with cheddar and mustard cress, coronation chicken with orange sultanas, smoked salmon with chives and cream cheese and British asparagus with watercress mayonnaise, we both enjoyed the salmon and ham options. In terms of cakes and pastries, the
Bakewell tarts with a berry compote were particularly good, as were the creamy vanilla eclairs with an inventive Matcha Green Tea frosting. My companion couldn’t find room to finish her spiced orange mascarpone cake and I was only too happy to fill in for her and offer the coup de grâce instead. The food is good, if not stunning. A plum posset with rhubarb caviar didn’t really work and one or two of the sandwiches were rather bland. However, the cakes and pastries are excellent and it’s a tea-lover’s paradise given the number of classic and exotic varieties that are on offer. It’s definitely worth a visit on a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon; just be sure to pick a day when the sun is shining. The Whittard Afternoon Tea costs £22 per person or £30 with a Bellini. Discovering
neverland The Journal explores a unique riverside al fresco eating and drinking experience featuring street food, palm trees and Fulham’s very own beach william monroe
I
’m sitting on a deckchair on a beach with palm trees in full view, warm sand between my toes and a cold Corona at hand as the sun blazes down from on high. You could be forgiven for thinking I’m relaxing in some exotic tropical destination; the Maldives, Barbados or the Bahamas perhaps. Instead, I’m in Fulham, next to Wandsworth Bridge by the banks of the River Thames. Neverland London is Fulham’s answer to the Riviera or the Algarve, a pop-up al fresco eating and drinking experience with a 20-metre beach which will be open throughout the summer until 3 October. The venue operates a ‘bring your own alcohol’ policy. The concept is fairly simple: supply the spirits and the bar staff will mix the cocktails. Cocktail options include popular classics such as mojitos or house creations such as Hollywood Rose, featuring amaretto (which you bring) plus blackcurrant juice and Sicilian lemons. Wine and beer is also allowed on-site, but it’s a good idea to consult the rules carefully as to what you
can bring – one of our group has a lime confiscated on arrival as food items are not allowed. A Sainsbury’s superstore just down the road is particularly handy when it comes to fuelling up on drinks (or refuelling in some cases) before arrival. Day beds – essentially large U-shaped sofas with low tables – and pastel-painted beach huts are available to hire, as are so-called ‘beach butlers’, who are on hand to create bespoke cocktails and keep your group well supplied with drinks. A number of street food stalls including LucaBuca Pizza and Le Rac Shack are in evidence (I recommend the French fries with onion gravy and melted Raclette cheese from the latter). There’s even an ice cream stall if you want to get to grips with something a

little sweeter. The venue is well organised and the staff are efficient, with plenty of people on hand to explain the concept on arrival. There are, however, a few teething problems. Ice buckets are in short supply, which means that on a hot day you’ll struggle to keep your drinks cool. It’s best therefore to go for the spirits and mixer option, as there’s a steady supply of ice for cocktails and pitchers are also available. There also aren’t many deck chairs, meaning that if you don’t get a seat at one of the long benches under a covered Perspex roof, or haven’t booked a beach hut or day bed, you can be left standing, as the venue fills up significantly after 5pm. On the whole though, it’s a really good concept. Speakers pump out a
constant stream of popular summer tunes and a chilled daytime vibe gives way to a more gregarious evening atmosphere as the drinks begin to flow. The BYOB concept also means that it’s not going to break the bank. You could spend a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon here sharing a bottle of rosé just as easily as you could enjoy a full-blown evening party with friends before heading off for a night out. There’s nothing quite like it in Fulham, and, for that reason alone – not to mention the 20-metre beach – it’s well worth a visit. Tickets from £10, advance booking recommended. Group bookings of six or more have access to a beach hut (£80), while groups of 12 to 25 have access to a day party bed (£150). Private hire bookings are also available. An Aveda Tulasara facial at Gina Conway is not an average way to spend a Wednesday afternoon william monroe
t
he last time I had a facial that featured a massage, such was the stupor-inducing level of relaxation that I ended up on the wrong tube line home. Determined not to repeat such navigational mishaps, I venture to the Gina Conway Fulham salon on a Wednesday afternoon to try out its new Aveda Tulasara facial. After filling out a quick health form (I definitely do not consume more than one alcoholic beverage a day), my therapist leads me to a treatment room below the main hair salon upstairs. I slip under the heated blankets and the room is darkened, with the only light emanating from the soft glow of flickering candles. Music interspersed with gentle birdsong fills the room and soothing Aveda aromas permeate my nostrils. And, breathe. Avid readers of this section may recall that I’m plagued by dry skin and my therapist instantly notes that there’s work to do on my beauty regime. My face also features a number of build-ups. When faced with the choice of concentrating on exfoliation and extraction or relaxation, it’s an easy choice. Or at least it should be. “Relaxation,” I reply somewhat guiltily.

Music interspersed with gentle birdsong fills the room and soothing Aveda aromas permeate my nostrils My therapist starts off by prepping my face with a thorough facial cleanse and massage using Aveda’s Tulasara Radiant Oleation Oil, a 100 per cent naturally derived blend of six plant oils which promotes microcirculation and nourishes and restores. A liquid exfoliant is then employed to help unblock my pores. This is followed by layered serums – Tulasara Calm which helps
drainage massage using an Aveda facial brush, an unusual technique which helps reduce dark circles and puffiness and makes the skin smoother and softer. A customised neck and shoulder massage follows to ease away the tension after a day spent at the desk. The treatment isn’t finished there however; it’s time for the foot massage. My feet are washed with
warm towels and a lotion is rubbed in before my therapist starts kneading away gently, repeating various soothing patterns and techniques. If anything, it’s even more relaxing than the head and shoulder massage that preceded it. A scalp massage finishes things off before I’m left to my own devices to sit up – should that be wake up – and sample a special peppermint herbal tea at my leisure. I thoroughly recommend a Tulasara facial. My therapist was skilled and professional and it was certainly a soothing end to a day at the desk. Now, about that tube home. 612 Fulham Road, SW6 5RP, 020 7731 7633, ginaconwaysalons.co.uk

The Neighbour
next door
Cat Priddey of Nextdoor, a unique neighbourhood-focused app, tells the Journal why it’s causing a stir in the community
n
extdoor is a neighbourhoodfocused platform and users sign up to join the neighbourhood in which they live or work. The idea is to connect people with their neighbours, and enable them to find out what’s going on in their local community – the original ‘social network’. Nextdoor originated in the US, where it is being used by more than 60 per cent of neighbourhoods. Since it launched in the UK in September, it has been taken up by almost every community in London and has widespread coverage across the UK. In the borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, over 4,500 people have already signed up. If you want to find a reliable plumber, get a recommendation for a good local restaurant, sell an unwanted bicycle, set up a running group or book club, or publicise a local event or campaign, Nextdoor is the place to be. Parsons Green residents Peter Knight and Ashok Gupta are both effusive in their praise. Peter Knight comments: “We want to ensure our beautiful green remains at the heart of our community, to be enjoyed by all. Until recently, residents lacked a forum to express their views. So, we were delighted to learn about Nextdoor, which provides a neutral platform for residents to discuss local issues, ranging from traffic to crime. We started Nextdoor Parsons Green and have been delighted with how quickly it has become a really valuable source of local information and a place for us all to have a say in community issues.”
24
Ashok Gupta and Peter Knight / © Max Knight
Munster Road resident Connie Carrasco joined her Nextdoor neighbourhood in November. “I wanted to be an active member of my community and find local people with similar interests,” she says. “Our Fulham Palace Road neighbourhood now has more than 200 members and new events, ideas or requests are posted every day. Some of my neighbours recently arranged a get-together at a local pub to meet each other faceto-face for the first time. Londoners are often so busy and it’s great that Nextdoor can bring people together.” As well as enabling greater interaction between Fulham residents, for local voluntary organisations Nextdoor is proving to be a valuable tool for tapping Connie Carrasco
into community spirit. Chris MikataPralat, who runs local charity Fulham Good Neighbours, is fully behind the scheme. Chris, who belongs to his local Nextdoor Central Fulham neighbourhood, says: “Nextdoor is an additional channel to identify those who want to help their neighbours and build a local community.” Fulham Good Neighbours has also managed to recruit a new volunteer through the community platform. Chris comments: “We rely on local volunteers to run our services. If Nextdoor can help us to find more volunteers, we can help more local people in need.”

James Davies, office head at Knight Frank Fulham, details the wide range of property
A rare double artist studio (with a very colourful back story) has gone up for sale in Chelsea
O
ne of only a handful of original double artist studios in Chelsea has hit the open market for the first time in 50 years, with an unusually rich provenance. The Grade II listed property was built in 1913 by Clifton Robert Davy for the celebrated sculptor and painter, Baron ArildRosenkrantz, who was responsible for the stained glass windows at Berkeley Castle, and some of the ceilings at Claridge’s. It was sold in 1925 to flamboyant powerboat racer and heiress, Marion “Joe” Carstairs, who had numerous affairs with high profile women including Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Oscar Wilde’s niece, Dolly. She also kept penguins in the back garden.
The provenance of No.5 Mulberry Walk is unusually rich Carstairs went on to be embroiled in a strange set of events; according to reports, while at a friend’s dinner party, the host shot her lover dead. To calm her down and corroborate the story, Carstairs whisked her friend back to her home in Mulberry Walk. It all blew up into a major scandal among the Chelsea set and she ended up buying an island in the West Indies, where she lived out the rest of her days. The next owner, Jane Halford, bought the house in 1958 and invited her journalist friend Beatrix Miller to live in the ground floor studio, which she did

covering a multitude of architectural styles. The continued development along the River Thames is helping to cater for the large demand for new build property. Buyers in these
developments are at all stages of life; the popular help to buy schemes and some developments offering smaller unit sizes (studios and small one beds) means that first time buyers get a look in. At the other end of the spectrum many couples who All images © Russell Simpson & Knight Frank
are looking to downsize from large period houses often favour the benefits that a modern new build scheme can offer (leisure facilities, concierge, secure parking etc) and the idea of ‘hassle free’ living. There are of course many that wouldn’t even consider living in a new build and strongly favour period properties with classic architectural features. More often

and continued to do so until her passing in 2014. During that time, the influential and glamorous “Miss Miller”, as she was known, went on to turn British Vogue from a pretty outdated society magazine into the country’s most profitable fashion publication. She threw all manner of parties at the studio for royalty, swinging 60s models and society photographers. After a 22-year reign at the fashion bible (between 1964 and 1986), Miller was succeeded in the editor’s role by a young Anna Wintour, who has of course just handed over to Edward Enninful. The house has just hit the market with Russell Simpson and Knight Frank, asking £8.95m. Knight Frank: 020 3641 5871, knightfrank. co.uk, Russell Simpson: 020 7225 0277, russellsimpson.co.uk
than not, these will require further upkeep and maintenance than an ‘ultra-modern’ property, but for many this is a price worth paying to benefit from the innate character and charm that a period property offers. Older properties have the kind of individuality that can only be obtained through years of adding, subtracting, decorating, improving, deteriorating and making new again. Often this comes along with the added bonus of a mature garden and even possibly a blue plaque! Of course, a way to enjoy the best of both worlds is to purchase a period property that has been sympathetically refurbished and fitted with modern conveniences. An excellent example of this is the house we are selling on Walham Grove which has been extensively renovated. The new owner will benefit from a stunning period house but one that features under floor heating, integrated music systems, NEST heating and many other features you might find in brand new build property. 203 New King’s Rd, SW6 4SR, 020 7751 2400, james.davies@knightfrank.com, knightfrank.co.uk

Let there be
light
Georgie Noel-Shore, senior lettings manager at Marsh & Parsons’ Fulham office, sheds light on demographics, tenancy agreements and the importance of flexibility as the Fulham market flexes its muscles william monroe
T
he overriding message from Georgie Noel-Shore, the senior lettings manager at the Fulham office of Marsh & Parsons, is that flexibility is key when it comes to the Fulham lettings market. In her own words it’s about “creating a market” and being proactive in the face of recent adversity. “Stamp Duty changes did bring a lot of properties onto the market last year,” she says. “People were looking to buy second properties very quickly and then rent them out. It slowed the market up, but you’ve got to adapt. Yes, it was tougher because there were more properties, but we just adjusted the pricing and our clients’ expectations. We’ve got great relationships with our clients, so we can have those tough conversations.”
The small touches can make all the difference for would-be landlords in a competitive market As well as flexibility with regard to pricing, Georgie tells me that it’s the small touches that can make all the difference for would-be landlords in a competitive market. “It’s important to be flexible on price for the right person and the length

of tenancy, but you’ve also got to make your property stand out,” she explains. “Dressing a property is important. Those little extra touches such as rugs and cushions make a property more homely. We’ve been working with landlords who have struggled to rent their properties and doing that sort of thing. They don’t have to be interior designers; small touches make a difference and really help spruce up a property.” Georgie, who is relatively new to the Fulham office having come from the flagship Notting Hill branch nine months ago, highlights that corporate tenancies are also key when it comes to driving lettings in the area. Across the Marsh & Parsons portfolio, almost 50 per cent of rental business is sourced from corporations, including global giants in healthcare, finance, ecommerce and entertainment. A lot of their employees see Fulham, with its excellent transport links and proximity to central London, as a particularly desirable place to live. In terms of private landlords,

Georgie says that around 70 per cent of her clients live in Fulham, with many choosing to buy a second home in the vicinity. In short, it’s a good area for people seeking to make their first investment in rental property. “They’re professionals, they’ve done well for themselves and now they’re looking to invest,” she says. “They’re very down to earth in Fulham. Applicants and landlords are usually quite similar in terms of demographic; they’re young, working professionals.” She also indicates that an increasing number of clients are looking for more security in the form of longer tenancy agreements. “We’re seeing a lot more tenants sign up for longer terms,” she says. “When people move into a home, they tend to stay. I’m going to do a valuation on a property this afternoon and the tenants have been there for four years. When I started six or seven years ago, 12 months with a six-month break clause was relatively common. People are a bit savvier with what they can do in terms of tenancies now – and they want that security. Families
conventionally take houses for two to three years because they don’t want to risk moving out and changing schools. But we’re seeing similar trends with smaller properties. We’ve just rented the flat above our premises – a tiny one-bed with a gorgeous little roof terrace – and the client took it for two years. It avoids recurring costs such as
tenancy agreements and cleaning and check-in fees.” When it comes to demand, the so-called ‘Lion Houses’ on the Peterborough Estate are always popular. Houses on roads off Fulham Road such as Winchendon, Lilyville and Radipole also attract significant interest. “Those houses are slightly wider and bigger,” Georgie says. “They’re roughly 1,800 sq ft as opposed to where we are which is the Moore Park Estate. The houses here are slightly smaller, but they’re more desirable. You’ve got Rumbold Road – which people often regard as the best road in Fulham – Britannia Road, Maxwell Road; all of these are really popular.” The one-bed flat market is particularly fruitful. “We’ve always been successful in the one-bed market, and that’s where the lion’s share of our business is done,” Georgie tells me. “There are more couples and single people in Fulham than there are families. In terms of onebeds and two-beds, anywhere off Fulham Road and Parsons Green is popular. Anything that we’ve had on Parsons Green Lane usually goes within hours – people really want to be there.” Pausing briefly to champion the benefits of chia seeds, which she’s been snacking on earlier – “I’m on a health kick and they’re really healthy” – Georgie explains that she has taken Fulham into her heart after her move from Notting Hill. “There’s a lot of greenery here; I love Eel Brook Common and South Park. The streets are beautiful and the houses are all very different. You have the amazing ‘Lion Houses’ close to Parsons Green, beautiful Georgian houses on Haldane Road and then Anselm Road, with magnolia trees all the way along it. A few weeks ago it was just bright pink – it was incredible. It’s a really cool area and it’s massively diverse. It’s that diversity of people that I love. I had it in Notting Hill and I’ve found it in Fulham.” 103-105 Moore Park Road, SW6 2DA, 020 7736 9822, marshandparsons.co.uk
