THE BOYS IN BLUE The latest building plans for the Fulham Boys School moving into Fulham Police Station have been revealed at a public exhibition that took place at St John’s Church, and residents were given the chance to see how the building will look when it’s complete. The evening was hosted by the Education Funding Agency who talked through the plans, and gave the public an insight into what to expect in the new building as well as showcasing designs that were developed by Architecture Initiative. When it officially opens in 2018, the boys’ school will offer secondary and sixth form education to 800 students. Part of the building plans also include nine new homes and a swimming pool that will be available for the public to use. fulhamboysschool.org

COMMUNITY SPIRIT Fulham Good Neighbours has been shortlisted for the prestigious Lord Mayor Dragon Award in the Community Partners category. The awards recognise and celebrate groups and organisations that make a positive impact on London’s neighbourhoods, and encourages people to get involved in their local community; the idea is to create an inclusive and sustainable London. The group has received the nod of recognition for its work with Assael Architects, which has supported the organisation’s gardening and decorating project for more than two years. Fulham Good Neighbours offers gardening and decorating services to elderly residents in the local area, as well as organising social clubs and running errands for them. Assael has volunteered many hours of its time to support Fulham Good Neighbours and reach as many people who need the services as possible. The award celebrates small charities and highlights the important, admirable work that they can achieve – and in this case, that’s making a very positive difference to the local community. fulhamgoodneighbours.org / dragonawards.org.uk

AND ALL THAT JAZZ

As Jazz on the Lawn at Fulham Palace approaches, the Journal talks to its organiser and one of the performers to find out why this is the Palace to be in in July BETHAN REES

J

azz at the Palace returns to the main lawn of Fulham Palace on 29 and 30 July and is an event definitely not to be missed. A fabulous summer weekend featuring live music, be sure to find a spot on the grass and dance the night away underneath the stars. Held in partnership with the

legendary Fulham-based Jazz institution the 606 Club, the lineup is inevitably going to include some of the finest musicians, with Friday night hosting The Fontanas – a Brazilian funk and soul band – while Saturday sees Georgina Jackson – a jazz singer and trumpeter – take to the stage.

The Fontanas

Steve Rubie, owner of 606 Club Can you describe how you first got involved with the 606 Club and why Fulham was chosen as its home? I took over the 606 Club from Steve Cartwright (its first owner) in 1976. At that time it was located in a tiny basement at 606 King’s Road (hence the name) where it had been running as a Jazz Club since 1969. I had been a regular there as a musician since the 1970s and somewhat fell into the management of it when Steve (Cartwright) left to go to France at very short notice and asked me if I would like to take it over. I initially said no, but the rest, as they say, is history. When we decided to move to larger premises in 1987 I wanted to stay as close to the old Club as I could, hence our move to the current location, a basement at 90 Lots Road, which is literally within walking distance of the old club. I have also lived in this area since the early 1970s and so it is very much home for me. I think it would feel out of place if the Club were to move somewhere else.

events the previous year, the Palace felt that jazz worked really well in the venue and wanted to partner with someone who knew their way around that genre. We, in turn, had already been involved in promoting a number of outside jazz events, including Jazz on The Green, so we were pretty up to speed with that aspect of things.

What was the thought process behind selecting the artists to perform at this year’s event? We try to book artists whose music we

feel is accessible, but at the same time holds true to the original brief of putting on something that reflects what we do on a nightly basis at the 606 Club. Friday nights tend to have a little more of a party feel, so this year we have The Fontanas, complete with a searing horn section and brilliant singer in the guise of US ex-pat Kay Elizabeth. It’s a rare year when we don’t have everyone up and dancing by the end of the set. Saturdays tend to be a bit more of a traditional jazz set; this year epitomised by the brilliant trumpeter and singer Georgina Jackson.

Why is Fulham Palace a good location for Jazz on the Lawn? The Palace initially approached us back in early 2008. Having run a couple of its jazz

Georgina Jackson, trumpeter and singer that time I started to think about taking singing seriously so I recorded an album and resigned from my job – all quite risky. I sent my CD to loads of people and the musical director of the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra liked it and invited me down. I don’t think I slept for weeks before the gig.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Trumpet-wise, I was recently invited to be the UK’s representative at the International Trumpet Conference in Los Angeles. I was honoured to perform on stage with some of my all-time trumpet heroes. Singing-wise, being asked to perform at the A Tribute to Peggy Lee concert with the BBC Big Band, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 2.

What are you most looking forward to at the event this year? Lovely weather ( fingers crossed), a beautiful setting and many smiling faces. A concert really is a two-way dynamic between us up on stage and the audience, so I’m hoping we’ll all have fun.

What can visitors expect from your set at Jazz on the Lawn? I have a really lovely band: Chris Ingham on piano, Dave Chamberlain on bass, George Double on drums and the fabulous Pete Long on saxophone. There will be swinging songs from the Great American Songbook, tributes to Peggy Lee, a few trumpet big band numbers, bossa novas, ballads and some surprise numbers from the 1970s – it’ll be a fun toe-tapping evening with hopefully a few laughs along the way.

Georgina Jackson

How did you become interested in jazz music? I was very fortunate to be given a trumpet at school. The education authority at the time provided jazz orchestras to play with so I was surrounded by jazz from a young age. I grew to love Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Louis Armstrong etc.

What’s your favourite aspect of your job? I love it when people say they didn’t

6

think they liked jazz but they really enjoyed themselves, or when they have a tear in their eye because a song reminded them of something special.

What was it like to be the resident singer with Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra? I played the trumpet professionally for years, playing in West End shows and backing artists such as Gladys Knight, Seal, the Four Tops and then became a primary school teacher for a while. During

The pull of Pullman Adorn your walls with Art Deco-style posters by Pullman Editions Francesca Lee

hink of the most glamorous destinations depicted in a 1920s Art Deco travel poster and you have Pullman Editions. Founded by Georgina Khachadourian and her husband Simon in 2010, it’s the sister company of the Pullman Gallery in St James’s. The idea came about when Simon, who is an antiques dealer, noticed the competitive market for winter sports posters. “He would go to auctions and see 1920s and ’30s posters sometimes selling for £30,000 upwards. We had the idea to create a business selling modern posters but in the same style – at £395 each – and it really took off,” says Georgina. Located on Pimlico Road – one of London’s premier design districts – the gallery was formerly an alleyway and is an impressive space with a huge floor-toceiling shop window, which lets the light flood in. “There are very few streets like this in London where most of the shops are independent – it’s a great place to be,” explains Georgina. “More than half our sales are made online, but passing trade is also frequent. I think it’s important to have a physical presence so customers can see the quality of our products.” Indeed, Georgina and Simon started their first collection with 18 ski posters. Such was the success that they then released a collection of car posters (Simon is a classic car fan) and a summer resort collection. The couple, who started off collaborating with a range of artists, now work exclusively with artist and prolific graphic designer Charles Avalon. “We love his Art Deco style – it’s instantly recognisable, and that’s what Pullman Editions is known for,” elaborates Georgina. Produced the same way they were in the 1920s and ’30s, the poster artworks are handpainted to a size that is about half the size of the final posters. A high-resolution image is then

scanned and it’s printed using traditional methods onto 100 per cent cotton paper. “Our posters are more colourful than vintage posters as in

Martin, Jaguar and Bentley. As well as carrying on as they are – if it’s not broken don’t fix it as the saying goes – the couple have found there’s a

“We’ve done work for clients all over the world – from Mayfair to Bermuda” the past printers used restricted colour palettes due to costs – the more colour they had the more expensive it would be in terms of production.” All of Pullman Editions’ posters are limited editions and it currently offers more than 100 different images. But which ones are the most popular? “I’d say Chamonix, Zermatt and Val d’Isère for the ski destinations, while the Côte d’Azur images are the most popular summer posters,” Georgina finds. high demand for private commissions. “We’ve done work for clients all over the world – from Mayfair to Bermuda – and we’re currently working on a project in Mustique,” says Georgina. But, which poster is Georgina’s favourite? “It has to be Route du Soleil,” she responds. That’s no surprise: somehow I think both she and her husband have found the road to success with Pullman Editions. 94 Pimlico Rd, SW1W 8PL, 020 7730 0547, pullmaneditions.com

The Problem

solver The Journal meets interior designer Emmanuelle Sirven to talk all things creative emily adams

Emmanuelle Sirven

E

mmanuelle Sirven is a woman who knows what she wants. When she set her heart on being an interior designer in London, rather than her childhood home in France, she didn’t take no for an answer. As part of her studies, she had to complete a year abroad. She was offered a place at the University of Creative Arts in Rochester in Kent, but said “no way, I want to go to London”. Emmanuelle took matters into her own hands and went back to basics. She starting knocking on doors, eventually reaching Chelsea College of Arts. “I told them ‘I want to come to your school’, and they said ‘okay’.”

10

Desperate to obtain that degree from Chelsea College of Arts as soon as possible, Emmanuelle completed her degree in just two years, knowing that it would open doors for her. “In London, all my senses exploded,” she recalls, remembering how she returned to her native Toulouse with bright red hair. “London gave me a much more practical education than in France,” she says, and because of her love for the city, London lured Emmanuelle back and she now lives in Fulham. “Fulham is like a little village but it still has the energy of London, and I love it.” Emmanuelle is the right person to have on side if you want to get things done; especially when said things include redecorating your home. She’s worked on a variety of projects and can turn her hand to any style or design, whether it’s large-scale commercial schemes like hotels, restaurants and offices or smaller residential ones. And with all those projects, she knows the importance of a good client-designer relationship. “I want people to feel comfortable with me, otherwise they won’t feel comfortable throughout the whole project.” “When people ask me what I do for a living, I don’t say I’m just an interior designer,” she says. “I create and change people’s ways of life,” Emmanuelle explains. “You almost need to be a psychologist to be an interior designer,” she tells me. “You need to be able to

understand a family’s needs, what they want from their home and how they feel towards it. “If I create a huge kitchen within a large dining room, you won’t live in the same way as if you had a small kitchen with a separate dining room and living room.” Emmanuelle has clearly learnt a lot from her career in design, having teamed up with other interior designers in the past and learning a lot from them. She tells me that she sees herself as a problem solver. “I come up with solutions for tricky layouts. I like finding the solution in small and larger layouts and what I propose is usually different. Clients like that.” She tells me that every day there are problems to solve, but that’s what she’s there to do. Having built up a network of people she can trust, she solves each problem one by one. “I work with contractors,

so I can experience a place like a local, not just as a tourist. I find it inspiring.” After a hard week of problem-solving, you’ll probably find Emmanuelle in Fulham, walking around and enjoying what the area has to offer and finding inspiration in the most unlikely of places.

builders and architects, in both London and France.” She explains that when she gets to the end of a project and there are amendments to make and finer details to sort out, she needs people she can rely on. “I only work with people I trust.” So for all these diverse projects, where does she get her inspiration? In London, Emmanuelle says she gets inspiration everywhere. “It might be from books, taking pictures, going to the cinema,

anything at all,” she says, adding that inspiration can come even from just walking down the street. Many people see France as the home of art and design, but for Emmanuelle everything inspires her design. Of course, her French roots do influence her work. “I travel a lot,” she says. “Some of my family live here, in Spain, Australia and South America and in terms of design I love them all. When I travel somewhere I like to be invited by someone,

I work with contractors, builders and architects, in both London and France Before we part, I ask if she has a project that she is most proud of. “I’m proud of all my projects,” she exclaims. “That’s like asking someone who their favourite child is, I can’t choose. No project is perfect,” she adds, “but I’m proud of everything I’ve done and how I arrived here.” 07748 098 578, emmanuellesirven.com

[FOOD AND DRINK]

JACK THE LAD

The Journal catches up with this year’s MasterChef runner-up and Fulham resident Jack Layer to talk food and his future

imageS © SHINE/BBC

BETHAN REES

How did you INITIALLY get into cooking? I have always cooked – I would mess around in the kitchen from a young age, but it was fending for myself at university that really pushed me into cooking. Pasta and cheese gets a bit boring after a while.

How has your education and career in fine art and design helped your culinary career? When thinking about what to cook and how to invent dishes it definitely helps to be creative and to not be worried about sticking to the rules – my background helps me think in different ways.

How did it feel to be the runner up on MasterChef? It was such an amazing experience overall, going to Mexico, cooking with Enrique Olvera and Daniel Humm. These are things I would never have got to do otherwise so I feel very fortunate I got to see it all the way through to the end. Winning would have been the cherry on the top – but I still got to eat the cake.

What was your thought process behind planning

your dishes on the show? I like to take classics and re-invent them, doing something unusual. Also, what you don’t see are all the attempts and testing sessions in my own kitchen – nothing comes easily without a lot of practice.

What was the most rewarding part of the show and what do you think your best dish was? I really enjoyed meeting everyone and doing things outside of my comfort zone. It was also amazing to just think about food and really push myself to improve from challenge to challenge. My best dish was the coriander cheesecake – hands down. The reaction that received was unbelievable.

What’s the biggest cooking faux pas someone can make? Panicking. As soon as you panic it all goes wrong. Have faith in the process and concentrate on what you’re doing and then it’s just executing things in the right order.

Where’s your favourite neighbourhood restaurant? My girlfriend and I recently went to Del’Aziz on Fulham Broadway. Sitting outside with great food and a cold beer

made for a pretty chilled weekday evening.

How would you spend your perfect weekend in Fulham? I’d swing down to the market on North End road and pick up some bits and pieces; some meat from the butchers and fresh fish as well as various fruit and vegetables. Then it’s back to my flat for a barbecue with my mates and a few drinks – as long as food is involved, I’m happy.

WHAT three ingredients WOULD YOU TAKE TO a desert island? Eggs firstly – I love eggs in all shapes and sizes. Also pork belly is amazing in all sorts of dishes and can be cured into bacon so – winning. Lastly, would be mushrooms as they’re so versatile. Altogether that sort of makes an English breakfast.

What are your Plans for next year?

Billy Wright ( fellow MasterChef contestant) and I have teamed up, we’re great mates and cook in similar ways so we’re going to do a couple of pop-ups over the summer in West London. jack-layer.com

TO DINE: THE IMPERIAL

Chef Nick MacGregor has made a name for himself in the area for using the finest seasonal produce and creating show-stopping dishes – he even utilises some of the food from the kitchen’s on-site fruit and vegetable garden, including tomatoes, strawberries and sweetpeas. With big communal tables and comfy sofas, it’s the perfect spot to sip away the summer and trial some of Nick’s plates. The garden is also available for private hire – it’s a great space for a wedding breakfast or a birthday bash. 577 King’s Road, SW6 2EH, 020 7736 6081, the-imperial.co.uk

LET’S TAKE THIS OUTSIDE The sun is shining, it’s heating up, so let’s enjoy the great outdoors. The Journal brings you its favourite places for al fresco drinking and dining BETHAN REES

TO DRINK: THE ROSE

Located next to The Old Gasworks in the quiet area of Walham Green, The Rose has a village pub feel to it, and I think that’s down to the garden. It’s heated during the winter, while in the summer, there are flowering shrubs aplenty and barbecues. In spring, the chef ’s roof garden overflows with herbs, which are used in the pub’s kitchen throughout the summer. With an excellent selection of wines by the glass, I can’t think of any reason not to spend an afternoon in The Rose’s garden. 1 Harwood Terrace, SW6 2AF, 020 7731 1832. therosefulham.co.uk

TO DINE: MEGAN’S

This independent eatery has a magical courtyard, which is open all year round (thanks to its retractable roof ). Visit for brunch and enjoy an eggs Benedict and a rainforest alliance, fair-trade coffee or pop in at lunchtime and visit its fresh salad bar. However, it’s in the evening when Megan’s truly comes to life. The garden is transformed into a cosy grotto of fairylights and green foliage, which feels a little bit like Christmas, even in July. Its twee gingham tablecloths and mismatched furniture make for a relaxed atmosphere and its evening menu offers diners a range of small plates, a couple of the café’s classic dishes include eggs shakshuka, sharing boards, plus steaks and kebabs straight from the grill. I’d recommend the grilled goat’s cheese with pistachios, honey and fig and the crispy poached egg with chorizo purée, followed by the côte de bœuf for two. 571 King’s Road, SW6 2EB, 020 7348 7139, megans.co.uk

TO DINE: ST CLEMENTS

Located in the popular, leafy location of Parsons Green, St Clements is the perfect spot to indulge in brunch (which is now served every day), afternoon tea or to sip a cold glass of white wine on its terrace. It prides itself on fresh, seasonal food and carefully devised recipes such as a dish of Isle of Wight tomatoes, hass avocado, softboiled egg, wild rocket and labneh with dukkah and seeded rye bread. The café also hosts supper clubs, so keep an eye out for details of its next one in September. 201 New King’s Road, SW6 4SR, 020 7998 8919, stclementscafe.co.uk

TO DRINK: THE MALT HOUSE

The Malt House pub dates back to 1729 when it was named The Maltster as a nod to those working in the local brewing industry. Fast-forward to 2016, and it’s still a much-loved drinking hole in the area. After its refurbishment and name change in 2013, it’s become one of SW6’s most elegant pubs, while its charming beer garden is a heavenly place to spend an afternoon. Its wine list has been developed by wine experts at Berry Bros. & Rudd and is constantly evolving, giving guests a perfect excuse to keep returning. But it’s not just its wines that The Malt House excels at – it also serves a selection of craft lagers and a seasonal cocktail list. 17 Vanston Place, SW6 1AY, 020 7084 6888, malthousefulham.co.uk

Located opposite Parsons Green tube station, Amuse Bouche’s wine list is refined and carefully curated, offering a feast for both the eyes and mouth. Unusually, its sparkling wine, or ‘spray list’ as it’s called, is the most extensive part of the menu and includes some truly special treats such as a jeroboam of Chassenay d’Arce Brut, while its cosy garden is a lovely place to chase away the Sunday blues. Plus, on weekends the team from the upstairs restaurant, Claude’s Kitchen, will cook up a lobster feast for hungry guests – do I need to give you any more reason to visit? 51 Parsons Green Lane, SW6 4JA, 020 7371 8517, amusebouchelondon.com

Say cheese

The art of the perfect cheeseburger with John Fynan

Our guide to creating the most succulent classic cheeseburger with all the trimmings. You will need a coarse grind of beef. At Parson’s Nose we use a cut of steak from the chuck and blend this with a small amount of aged trim from our roasting joints. The chuck steak has a great fat content which benefits from the mincing process and the cuts from the roasting joint to produce an aged, beefy flavour. Roll your mince into palm-sized balls and flatten into patties. Whether you are grilling over charcoal, on a gas barbecue or in a pan, the same rule applies. An intense heat is needed to create the caramelisation that gives you a delicious crunch, sealing the outside of the burger while retaining the juicy goodness inside.Treat the burger just like you would a steak. Season the outside generously with black pepper and coarse sea salt. Lay the burger patty on the grill – you will know the temperature is correct if there is an instant sizzle when the meat hits the surface. Let the burger sit for a couple of minutes to allow the surface to caramelise, once you see this occurring, it is time to flip. Repeat this on the other side, flip the burger again and add two slices of cheese. We usually opt for an English Cheddar, as its rich flavour complements the beef perfectly. Another tip is to use a lid to cover the burger. This allows the cheese to melt while slightly steaming the burger, retaining its moist interior. Lightly toast your bun before adding your favourite condiments, leaves, tomatoes and pickles to finish. Consume immediately! 753 Fulham Road, SW6 5UU, 020 7736 4492, parsonsnose.co.uk

The gents’ hairdressers offers traditional wet shaves, hair colouring, waxing, laser hair removal, massages, bespoke men’s skincare, eyebrow tidying and hand and foot treatments – is there anything it doesn’t do? Customers can use the treatment rooms, and the barbershop provides a full range of services as well as grooming products to take home. Theory of Evolution

The Journal does the rounds at the Evolve 353, a brand-new luxury fitness studio in Fulham Elizabeth Finney

T

he most important thing to note at this point is that the Ignite class at Evolve 353 is tough… really tough. But, if you’re willing to work hard, anyone can get through it and even enjoy the process. I wouldn’t call myself particularly fit, but I arrive at the studio early and eager to see what the fuss is all about. I meet Ashton Turner and David Arnot, the co-founders who have brought their combined 17 years of experience in the fitness industry to Fulham. Ashton explains simply that their aim is get people in the gym as often as possible, and though they offer one-to-one personal training, their most popular approach focuses on semi-private sessions. Members work in groups of two or three with their dedicated fitness and lifestyle coach. This means more people can afford to get to

24

the gym more often, partaking in classes or training sessions and receiving the best personalised coaching. After a jaunt around the Evolve 353 training room, luxury shower rooms (complete with hair ties, dryers, straighteners and gorgeous-smelling products) and main studio, it’s time to work up a sweat at their carefully crafted Ignite class, which uses a series of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) exercises to form a singular circuit. With just a few of us taking part, I can feel Ashton carefully assessing our technique and sussing out any injuries as we do

sets, swapping between 30 seconds of work and 30 seconds of rest. I start on the battle ropes and progress through body-conditioning exercises such as burpees, box jumps and planks, through to lat pulls on a TRX and sessions on the SkiErg and rowing machine. This type of workout burns a stonking number of calories and, although brutal, it’s all over in under an hour and it honestly feels like adrenaline has carried me the whole way through. Throughout each section Ashton comes in spurring each of us on in order to adjust our technique or to suggest alternatives depending on fitness levels or injuries, making the session feel personal and tailor-made. By the end of the 45 minutes, I’m exhausted but smiling. It feels like a team effort and, unlike slogging it on the running machine for hours at the gym, my muscles are singing the well-balanced song of beneficial hard work. This is a class I would definitely sign up for again, even if only to try and beat my original times – or to simply hang out in the sleek Brooklyn-esque studio. Memberships range from £96 pcm to £1,349 pcm (12 sessions), please visit the website for details, 353 New King’s Road, SW6 4RJ, 07543 650 568, evolve353.com

PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT Structural changes in the area

In the heart of Battersea

P

eabody, a London housing provider, has reported that following its launch in March over 50 per cent of the first phase at their latest flagship development St John’s Way remains. Located in the heart of Battersea, the development was introduced to customers on 10 and 12 March this year. The launch not only included a state-of-the-art marketing suite but also gave buyers the opportunity to discover ‘The St John’s Way of Life’ with everything the local area has to offer; from one of the UK’s largest transport hubs (Clapham Junction) to Michelinstarred restaurants. Sarah Butler, sales and marketing

director at Peabody comments: “One of London’s property hotspots, Battersea is a popular destination bursting with character, heritage and boutique offerings. Residents of this new development will have everything on their doorstep including great places for entertainment and some of the UK’s best transport links as well as an abundance of outdoor space. These are the essentials that everybody considers when purchasing a new home.” Designed by award-winning architects Hawkins/Brown, St John’s Way is a multi-phased development, part of Peabody’s St John’s Hill regeneration project, and will provide a staggering 528 new homes once complete.

Comprising a mix of two, three and four-bedroom apartments and triplexs, the development will provide high quality, spacious new homes in the thriving SW11 postcode. In addition, St John’s Way landscape will include 13,600 square metres of communal and commercial space, a new community hub and a public square that will create an accessible route from Clapham Junction station to Wandsworth Common. This striking public space will also feature innovative landscaping, a wildflower garden and play areas ideal for residents with children. A number of art installations are also being incorporated into the development to reflect its rich heritage and history and add an artistic touch to an already beautiful regeneration. Nearby Northcote Road is home to an array of independent florists, delis, grocers, newsagents and beauty salons. Prices at St John’s Way start from £580,000 for a two-bedroom apartment. Buyers can register their interest by calling 020 3151 4867 or visiting stjohnswaysw11.co.uk

[HOT PROPERTY]

TAKE ME TO THE RIVER The Journal takes a tour of a picturesque, Thames-side apartment on the market with Knight Frank BETHAN REES

A

s you walk in, you’re greeted by breath-taking floor-toceiling windows, looking out onto a stretch of the River Thames on the border of Fulham and Hammersmith, gazing out onto the stunning, salmon-pink terracotta Harrods Furniture Depository buildings. The windows work to immaculately connect this two/three-bedroom apartment to the water; it feels as if you’re totally connected, with no gap

and entertaining space; this property was made for dinner parties. Above the glorious reception room hangs a mezzanine level, or a gallery, which is the perfect space for a study or perhaps even a further bedroom – there’s also a bathroom up here. This links with the first of two roof terraces, which leads directly onto the second one after climbing a flight of stairs, giving unparalleled views of the river and south west London – think industrial chic, with a feeling of

“One of those knockout flats that doesn’t come on to the market very often” in-between and you get the sense that you could dive straight in – especially when the tide is high. Designed by esteemed architect Richard Rogers, this riverside penthouse is quite unlike any other apartment I’ve seen in the area. Located within a trendy ’80s building, this 1,894 sq ft apartment offers a huge amount of living

30

being on a New York hotel terrace. Back in the main space, the openplan kitchen is located just off the large reception room, and provides all the mod cons you could need, with the lovely addition of a rounded window, giving the effect of being on a boat – apt within its setting. The reception room plays host to a balcony, giving this

apartment plenty of outdoor space. The main bedroom, which has an ensuite, floor-to-ceiling windows and a door exiting to its own private balcony that’s an idyllic setting for a morning coffee and a croissant looking over the river. The second bedroom is located just to the left of the internal hallway and provides ample living space also. Mark O’Neill, partner and office head of Knight Frank Fulham, describes the penthouse as “one of those knockout flats that doesn’t come on to the market very often,” and as an “interior designer’s dream blank space to work with,” and I must agree. With underground parking and a day porter, this Thames Reach property is perfect for a small family, a couple or an individual, but one thing’s for sure, any buyer of this property will never tire of that view. Guide price £2,600,000. Knight Frank Fulham, 203 New King’s Road, SW6 4SR, 020 7751 2400, knightfrank.co.uk

Under Snell’s spell Having opened just over a year ago, the Journal catches up with Fulham’s couple-run, independent estate agent Snell & Snell BETHAN REES

“I

t’s gone by so quickly,” Victoria Snell, one half of the power duo at the helm of Snell & Snell estate agency, says of the independent business’ first year. “There have been challenging moments of course, but we’ve now gained more consistency and momentum and have got to know more local people,” she continues. Both Andrew and Victoria Snell previously worked for larger estate agents, starting their careers in the industry in the early 2000s; I ask if there has been any hesitation in setting up their own agency in light of the challenges they’ve faced in its first year. “It was definitely the right thing to do,” Victoria reassures me. “It’s been so rewarding,” Andrew adds. He explains to me that one of the biggest differences between Snell & Snell and his previous jobs is the way in which they work. “We’re a lot closer to our clients, which means we can offer other services to them. For example, I oversaw a three-hour electrical inspection for a client, because that’s what they wanted and we offer a personalised service,” he says. Being a small team gives the agency an Danehurst Street, Let, £1,100 Per Week

advantage, they tell me. “We’re always on hand and close-by as we live locally too,” Victoria describes. “It also means that clients are always dealing with the same people all the time.” Although Andrew generally deals with sales and Victoria handles the lettings side, they both know what is going on in each other’s schedules, so if a client were to come in and Victoria or Andrew wasn’t there, the other would still be able to help. I want to find out what the highlights have been for them. “Easy – breaking into the house market,” Victoria says, but for Andrew it’s not as straightforward. “I’ve been an agent for 15 years, but here we’ve had to start over from the year dot. The highlight has to be getting over the initial hurdles of gaining the trust of people as a company as a whole, and myself individually,” he says. Snell & Snell has been actively getting involved with the local community through its sponsorship of St Peters Fulham including a theatre production, a Thanksgiving service and most recently a garden party celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday. However, Victoria elucidates that it’s much more than simply throwing money at an event. “We even ran the Knivet Road, Guide Price £1,750,000

Linver Road, Guide Price £2,000,000

bar at some of the events,” she laughs. The summer market usually brings a rush for transactions ahead of the new school term in September, so I ask Andrew what advice he has for a vendor looking to sell in the current climate. “You need to give people the confidence in value – it’s the most important element right now. So you need to present your property well and address every last detail so there’s no question over its value,” he recommends. So whether they’re pouring you a gin and tonic at a local event or helping you sell your house, Snell & Snell is constantly helping the local community in Fulham, and I for one am excited to see how much further the agency has developed next year.
