When your spine is properly aligned, your muscles, joints and ligaments can work correctly. This reduces wear and tear of joints and relieves pressure on the tissues, improving health and enhancing your appearance. Your vital organs are in the right position and can function at peak efficiency. Good posture also contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system. It also leads to increased self-confidence, with one study revealing that people adopting good posture not only display greater confidence, but have a stronger belief in their own abilities. Good posture is essential to good health, wellbeing and physical fitness. It helps: • Digestion • Breathing • Abdominal tone • Prevent back, neck and other joint pain • You look more youthful When you book a postural assessment with one of our osteopaths or our Alexander Technique specialist we will look at your posture from head to toe from the front and side to assess your individual posture type.

RED CARPET READY A Hydrafacial has instant results, without any downtime, so it’s no wonder more and more A-listers are turning to this treatment of choice. The Journal meets Elena Cudworth of Elenique Aesthetics to find out more francesca lee-rogers

T

ucked away slightly off the Fulham Road, Elena of Elenique Aesthetics greets me as I make my way into the studio clinic. The discreet space is ideal for treatments and Elena’s clientele, which includes high-profile clients and celebrities. The high-end treatments and technologies she uses at her clinic means she is in high demand. I’m here to try a Hydrafacial, which is one of Elena’s most popular treatments. As a non-invasive facial, it helps to improve the appearance of fine lines, pigmentation and brown spots, acne, and oily and congested skin types.

When I look in the mirror to see the results, my first reaction is how clear my skin looks Before Elena gets to work on my skin, we have an in-depth consultation where I share my skin concerns and she guides me step-by-step, detailing what I will experience in the next hour or so. She is clearly very knowledgeable, with a vast amount of dermatology experience, and I’m confident that in Elena’s hands, I will be glowing in no time.

10

The Consulting Room Group

The first step is to remove my makeup, and already Elena can see the lumps and bumps below the surface that I try to disguise each day. It’s then on to the detox process, where Elena uses the Hydrafacial machine to carry out lymphatic drainage. It feels like a vacuum on my skin, increasing blood flow to the area and bringing oxygen to support the cells while also restoring hydration, toning and firming, as well as eliminating toxins. This is followed with a deep cleanse and exfoliation, using a lactic acid serum with glucosamine and botanical extracts, before a glycolic and salicylic solution helps to loosen debris from my pores to get them ready for the extraction stage. It tingles slightly but I’m reassured by Elena that it’s doing its job penetrating the epidermis. The extraction is then carried out on

congested areas, which for me, focuses on my nose and chin. After drawing out impurities, it’s time to rehydrate and rejuvenate. A cocktail of ingredients including peptides and antioxidants is pumped through the machine to hydrate and plump it up. I can feel my skin soak up every drop. A blast of red and infrared LED light is then used to reduce any redness and stimulate collagen. When I look in the mirror to see the results, my first reaction is how clear my skin looks; I can certainly see the difference it has made. Elena also takes special care advising me on my skincare regime and what type of products I should be using, and I really feel that after searching for a long time for a facialist, I – like so many others – have found the perfect match in Elena, and her Hydrafacial machine. 959-961 Fulham Road, SW6 5HY, 020 3637 4549, eleniqueaesthetics.co.uk

FITNESS FIRST

Personal trainer Nathan Towle talks healthy eating (eggs are on the menu), weight loss, and the joys of outdoor exercising william monroe

How did you get into fitness and become a personal trainer? I grew up in London and started my business after graduating from university with a philosophy degree at the end of 2011. Given that I’d spent more time exercising than studying, becoming a personal trainer was the natural choice. Plus, for all its charms, philosophy doesn’t put food on the table!

What is it in particular that you specialise in?

Nathan Towle

Weight loss. I think that’s the goal that people struggle most with, and the area that can cause the most unhappiness.

What type of clients do you work with?

And do you make the most of the summer months to hold sessions outdoors?

The majority are professional women frustrated by their weight. These are people who are often very successful at work – driven, disciplined, and focused – but who can’t seem to apply those same qualities to their diet and health.

Do you practise what you preach in terms of your own lifestyle? I do. I actually wasn’t particularly athletic as a child; it was only as an adult that I really got into fitness. Exercise is very rewarding and the gym is a wonderful place to have time to myself and order my thoughts. I split my time between strength training, playing football, amateur gymnastics, and cycling.

What are your go-to health foods? It has to be eggs. They’re versatile, good for you and are a great source of vegetarian protein, plus you can eat them at any time of day. They’re healthy and they’re easy to cook, which are the two important things for me.

Absolutely, we get outside and enjoy it. Lighter evenings mean running along the river becomes a lovely thing to do and changing it up and working out in the park makes everyone happy.

What are the benefits of having a studio in Fulham?

What are your top tips for losing weight and staying healthy?

I live in the area as well as work here and I love it, especially the community feel it has. And it’s great to be close to the river.

I think the first mistake people make is they have a friend or an aunt or their hairdresser’s cousin who apparently lost three stone in six weeks. When that inevitably doesn’t happen they get discouraged and give up. Losing weight doesn’t happen overnight. We say healthy and sustainable weight loss is 1-2lbs per week, so the first thing to do is set a realistic schedule and take it from there.

Do you see a spike in clients leading up to the summer months? We do, as soon as the first sunny days in spring appear, people start thinking about the summer and that gets the desire to exercise and eat well going again. Often there’s a New Year’s resolution that hasn’t been fulfilled and the warmer days remind people why they want to feel great wearing fewer clothes.

HOT SHOT

We court up with former Swedish number one Thomas Enqvist ahead of his appearance at the Aspall Tennis Classic at Hurlingham william monroe

T

his will be Thomas Enqvist’s fourth appearance at the Tennis Classic event at The Hurlingham Club, but he’s as excited as ever to step out onto the verdant (hopefully sun-drenched) grass courts. From 27-30 June, the former Swedish number one and Australian Open finalist will line up alongside fellow ex-professionals including Mark Philippoussis and Greg Rusedski for a series of doubles exhibition matches. Big names also make up the separate singles competition, which features current players looking to hone their grass court game ahead of Wimbledon in early July. Top 20 players who are participating include Milos Raonic, the big-serving

12

Serb and Wimledon 2016 finalist who is currently ranked six in the world, flair player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and the current American number one Jack Sock. The Hurlingham Club is also an old hunting ground from Thomas’ playing days, meaning that he’s certainly no stranger to a grass court venue which he holds in high regard. “I played there three or four times as a player,” he tells me. “The grass courts are so good, so it was perfect preparation for Wimbledon. Since I’ve retired I’ve been lucky enough to come back and play exhibition doubles; it’s one of the most beautiful clubs in the world so it’s always very nice to be there.”

Thomas – who once rose as high as world number four in the ATP rankings and won 19 ATP Tour titles over the course of his distinguished 15-year career – indicates that while the exhibition doubles, featuring the so-called ‘Legends’, maintains a competitive edge, it’s a fun environment, in comparison to the serious business of the singles competition. “That’s why the event works so well,” he says. “You can watch some of the best players in the world playing singles and obviously it’s serious because they want to prepare for Wimbledon. But then you can see

some doubles which is more relaxed. Wimbledon is just around the corner, so it’s an exciting time to be in London at this time of year for a tennis fan.” Thomas is full of praise for the grass courts at The Hurlingham Club, which he believes are similar in quality to the hallowed turf of Wimbledon. “It’s unbelievable how good the grass is,” he says enthusiastically. “There’s nothing like it, it’s so different to any other surface. If you play on a good grass court, it’s so nice to move on and the bounce and sound of the ball hitting the grass is very special. Nothing is more fun than grass court tennis if you’re lucky enough to play at Hurlingham or Wimbledon.” The Swede has a good rapport with his fellow ‘Legends’, having played in the past alongside the likes of Mansour Bahrami – the Iranian-born Frenchman famed for his showmanship, who he describes as an “unbelievable character” – and Mark Philippoussis among others. “I enjoy playing with all of them,” he says. “We’ve shared so many memories and lots of things in the past, so it’s so nice to see them again and to be able to have fun together in a relaxed atmosphere.” Thomas, who captained Sweden’s Davis Cup team from 2009-2012, counts Pete Sampras as the toughest opponent he ever crossed rackets with. “I played him 11 times and lost nine. For me, he was the most difficult to play against.” He still beat the American great twice though? “Well it’s true!” he chuckles. One of the defining moments of his career came at its outset, a chance as a youngster to play against his compatriot and hero:

tennis legend Björn Borg. “I had some opportunities when I was young to play against him in practice,” he explains. “It’s still one of my biggest memories. He was my idol, he was the reason why I played. The first time I had an opportunity to play with him is something that I will never forget. It was just practice, but it was like a Wimbledon final!”

“It’s an exciting time to be in London at this time of year for a tennis fan” For now, Thomas, who lives in France with his wife and children, is keeping busy, working as a commentator for a TV channel in Sweden. He also plays in exhibition matches and is helping to organise a tennis event in March 2018 in Stockholm. He doesn’t, however, rule out a return to coaching. In the past, in addition to his Davis Cup role, he has spent time working with the Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, as well as holding a role with the Svenska Tennisförbundet (Swedish Tennis Association) coaching up-and-coming youngsters. “It’s as close as you get to competition again,” he explains. “When you coach a player it’s like you play again, but through him. It’s a lot of fun to be able to help someone reach their potential and goals.” The Aspall Tennis Classic runs from 27-30 June at The Hurlingham Club, Ranelagh Gardens, SW6 3PR. EXTRAVAGANZA The all-male Shakespearean company The Lord Chamberlain’s Men (TLCM) is performing at Fulham Palace for the first time on 17 June – artistic director Peter Stickney explains all william monroe

What is the company’s modus operandi?

Image © Farrows Creative

Founded in 2004 and granted the company name from the Lord Chamberlain at Buckingham Palace, we are the reincarnation of Shakespeare’s original company. All-male productions hark back to Shakespeare’s time, when women were banned from the stage. In order to best understand his plays, we seek to get as close as we can to the way in which they were originally staged; all male, in the open air and with Elizabethan costumes, music and dance.

This being an English summer, what’s the plan if it’s pouring with rain?

Image © Jack Offord

What can the Fulham Palace audience expect from The Comedy of Errors performance? The Comedy of Errors is a magical, comically-entwined tale of mistaken identity following merchants, masters, parents, servants and a long-suffering wife and playing itself out over the course of one hectic day. This riotous rollercoaster of a comedy is appropriate for all ages and will keep you guessing and laughing until its joyous conclusion.

Are you looking forward to performing in the Walled Garden? It is a beautiful venue in

14

too much away there are several reunions and the way that they are realised combines both the hilarious and the touching.

In the great theatrical tradition, the show must go on! In fact, the shows when the weather turns against us can often in fact be some of the most memorable. A particular bond is formed when the audience sees the cast ploughing on regardless. That bond is almost tangible and the crackle in the air will usually turn into a heartfelt, if somewhat damp, standing ovation.

What’s your favourite venue that TLCM have performed at?

a wonderful part of our capital city, with a history that significantly pre-dates Shakespeare himself. It’s a very exciting place to perform.

Directing outdoor theatre must be a real pleasure? There is nothing quite like seeing a play as the sun sets and the stars begin to come

out. Against the backdrop of the spectacular venues that we visit it’s very special. The lack of formality that comes from not being in a theatre allows people the freedom to really enjoy themselves.

What’s your favourite moment in the play? It would probably be the final scene. Without giving

range of innovative and unique finishes. “As a company, we’ve evolved from a flat or matte finish,” Paul explains. “While that’s still very much the core of our business, people also really want to bring natural elements into their designs. We like to think that we’ve championed that, if not pioneered it.”

P

aul Welburn has been with Roundhouse for nine years, but the softly-spoken senior designer and Fulham showroom manager says his passion for kitchen design remains undiminished despite the passing of time. “You still get that buzz when you have worked on a really good design,” he says. “I’ll never get tired of popping round to someone’s house and seeing the finished product. I feel as energised about it as I was nine years ago. You always want to improve and come up with something better.” Roundhouse specialises in creating bespoke kitchens and furniture. Designs are expertly crafted in a state-of-theart manufacturing facility in Malvern, Worcestershire and are available in a

“We frequent The Durrell Arms on a Friday night, if my clients want to find me, they know where I am” Roundhouse doesn’t proscribe to set formulae when it comes to designs, as is to be expected from a company where a bespoke service is the kernel of the business. Paul indicates that styles can be mixed and matched; for example, a more traditional country kitchen design can be paired with something that is ultracontemporary. Essentially, the company’s elegant fleet of showrooms – I’m chatting to Paul amidst a gleaming backdrop of artful surface tops and carefully-crafted furnishings at Roundhouse’s flagship Wigmore Street showroom – act as starting points that are designed to prompt and plant seeds that can then

It’s really good to get one of those iconic looks and then a design can evolve from that. Our designs are more unique and personal compared to your regular off the shelf high street brand – I have never designed the same kitchen twice.” An essential ingredient of the Roundhouse ethos is a focus on a close relationship with the client. A detailed initial design meeting is backed up by a managed installation service and a dedicated installation coordinator.

with my clients. Sometimes their ideas are what I would do as well and that’s really lovely.” As for Fulham as an area, Paul is particularly effusive, not least when it comes to the food and drink offerings in the neighbourhood that he enjoys when he’s not cooking up a storm in a (soonto-be-completed) kitchen. “We frequent the Durrell Arms on a Friday night, if my clients want to find me, they know where I am,” he jokes. “My favourite deli Bayley & Sage is about four doors away; the mozzarella they do there is divine. It’s a wonderful part of London, it’s a village within a city. It’s eclectic, there are international schools and I love the fact that it’s multi-cultural. Everyone knows each other, there’s a really good sense of community. Most importantly, there are gorgeous houses to work on.” Bespoke Urbo island base cabinets

“For the initial meeting it varies,” Paul explains. “It’s probably between an hour to two hours, some people have got a very clear idea of what they want to do with the space. Maybe what we’re doing is challenging that and saying, ‘have you considered this?’ Other times people come along and they have no idea whatsoever, so that’s when we take over.” Paul holds the reins in SW6 as the senior designer at the Fulham showroom, and he takes great pride in cultivating a close personal relationship with his clients. “Although we have project managers and installation managers I always see a project through to the end,” he says. “Collaboration between the client and designer is the nuts and bolts of it – my best designs have always been realised when I’ve had a really good collaboration

Paul is also brimming with tips when it comes to designing that dream kitchen. “Come and see me – obviously!” he laughs. “Try and visit your kitchen designer early on. There’s nothing worse than a plan being all signed off and the build already started and then steel’s in the wrong place or something like that, where it could really give a person what they want. Do your own research on appliances and be open-minded about some of the natural products that are out there. Ultimately, we’re here to help. We’ve got very passionate, creative people who work for the company: so come in, bring your plans and let us have a look at it.” Roundhouse bespoke kitchens start at £35,000, 857 Fulham Road, SW6 5HJ, 020 7736 7362, roundhousedesign.com

KING KOJI Koji is a classy Japanese restaurant in Parsons Green that you must add to your culinary hit-list william monroe

All images © Paul Winch-Furness

E

verything about upscale Japanese fusion restaurant Koji is impressive, from the attentive waiting staff and elegant interior, to the gourmet delights that await the discerning diner. Prices certainly aren’t cheap, but are fair considering the quality of food that’s on offer. The cuisine has Japanese roots married to the spicy and flavoursome punch of Peru – and it really works. The atmosphere when my friend and I visit on a Thursday evening is lively. Thirsts are being quenched at the busy cocktail bar and chefs are hard at work at the sushi station in full view of diners. Spotlights shine down from above, illuminating a circle where dishes will appear in the centre of the table, in contrast to the intimate, low lighting in the rest of the room. It’s a clever and rather unique touch.

I flirt with the notion of ordering the banana ice cream with caramel miso sauce, which does its best to tempt me We start off with edamame beans with sea salt before a flow of incoming Tapas-style dishes arrive. From the hot and cold tapas options the Anticucho Octopus and Tuna Tataki with a spicy

22

ponzu sauce are deliciously salty and the Rabbit Kushiyaki Togarashi is flavoursome and tender. The Shrimp Tempura roll is the best sushi I’ve tasted, with the crispy king prawns combining delightfully with the soft, sticky rice. It’s simple but excellent. The medium rare Moro Miso Lamb Cutlets are also a triumph, with the meat ready to fall off the bone. We adopt a pattern of repetition; a dish appears, only to be quickly stripped bare and replaced with something equally as good. The presentation of dishes in terms of aestehtic appeal is also immaculate. In amidst the carnage we pay homage to a side of the grilled aubergine spicy miso which is a must-try. The best though

is saved for last in the form of the Spicy Quail dish. It’s tiny quail legs, cooked to perfection just like the lamb and it’s smothered in a moreish sauce. It’s a tough call but if I had to nail my colours to the mast then this is my personal favourite. After our overindulgence neither of us can manage dessert, although I flirt with the notion of ordering the banana ice cream with caramel miso sauce, which does its best to tempt me. Koji draws a gregarious crowd, but there’s no getting away from the fact that it is a little on the formal side. This is a five-star dining experience in an artfullydesigned setting with smartly turned out waiting staff. Crucially however, it isn’t stuffy or overbearing and there isn’t anything else quite like it in Fulham. That, combined with the superb food, means it really is a must-try. Koji is a rare jewel in Fulham’s gold mine of excellent restaurants and it’s waiting to be discovered for those who haven’t already ventured over the threshold. 58 New King’s Road, SW6 4LS, 020 7731 2520, koji.restaurant

EDA ELBIRLIK Fulham resident Eda tells the Journal about her jewellery company Maviada, which is inspired by soothing summer holidays on the Mediterranean coast william monroe

I was so fortunate to grow up in a multi-cultural environment. I was born in Istanbul, grew up in the United States and have been living in London for the past eight years. The concept for Maviada was born from my summer holidays with family and friends on the beautiful waters of the Mediterranean.

Women wear jewellery differently these days.

I love living in Fulham –

They want something they can put on in the morning and then go about their day. Maviada’s jewellery showcases a sense of understated glamour and elegance, while offering affordable, high-quality, everyday luxury to women worldwide. The jewellery consists of precious and semiprecious stones in classical fresh designs that have been stylishly brought together.

We envision a multigenerational audience for the brand. Our ideal client is a woman who is discerning and knows who she is and what she wants.

The Mediterranean lifestyle is the key inspiration for our designs. Some of my biggest influences are my summer holidays on the coasts of the Aegean Sea.

All images © Juliet Sheath

It’s a big part of my identity – the soothing colours of the sea, the gentle rustling breeze, the silver coated olive trees and the bright, warm sun shining on your face.

Maviada means blue island in Turkish, and the name goes hand in hand with the inspired effect we want from our pieces. Basically, jewellery that makes you feel good and gets you in the holiday frame of mind.

All of our gems come from India and Hong Kong, which are the best places for sourcing semiprecious and precious stones. We strive for the best quality stones, workmanship and design.

We were honoured to exhibit our collection at London Fashion Week. London is currently the centre of the design and fashion world today – what more could we ask for?

it’s changed so much in the past five years. It really is a hidden gem in London. We have the best parks and great restaurants and boutiques that make it a vibrant and charming place. To be so close to the Thames and the beautiful gardens of Bishop’s Park really enhances living in a large metropolitan city.

Like most working mums, I get my three kids and husband out the door for school and work. I then devote the rest of my day to Maviada. I am so fortunate to do something I’m passionate about. Ever since my childhood, I have always had a love of fine jewellery. It’s such a personal thing – everyone wants to create their own individuality. We hope they can do that with our pieces. maviada.co.uk

‘Open equity investment platform’ backs nu:group’s Fulham scheme Cogress has pulled off a £1.35m fundraise to back a high-end four-townhouse scheme

C

ogress, an “open equity investment platform for property”, has pulled off a £1.35m fundraise within 24 hours to back a high-end four-townhouse scheme in Fulham. The deal – to fund a 5,909 sq ft luxury residential project by south west London developer The nu: group on Filmer Road, SW6 – has a targeted exit date of October 2017, and aims to realise £7m at sale. The development will include off-street parking and landscaped gardens. Founded in 2009, Cogress has made 25 investments in the UK so far, and claims to have 1,600 registered investors (with a minimum investment of £20,000). The platform’s first UK exit – on a residential development in Golders Green, North London – apparently achieved a 25 per cent annual return, while the average expected return on current UK investments is 24 per cent plus annually. Tal Orly, CEO of Cogress UK said: “The enthusiasm with which our community of more than 1,600 registered investors responded to this project shows the strong appetite for intelligent investment opportunities in a market that continues to be incredibly dynamic. Following a successful first year in the UK, where we built a portfolio of more than 25 investments, and worked with

some of the top developers in the country, this project in Fulham once again perfectly reflects our commitment to securing the best investment opportunities for our network of investors, while contributing to the wider growth of quality housing in London.”

Market

MATTERS Roseanna Purbrick, associate at Strutt & Parker’s Fulham office, tells us what the Fulham market is up to william monroe

“I

This image and below, Bovingdon Road, £2,895,000

t’s definitely a positive message,” says Roseanna Purbrick, associate at Strutt & Parker’s Fulham office, of the current market. After a figurative winter of discontent amidst a market afflicted by Brexit doubts and Stamp Duty changes, pervasive uncertainty has made way for the green shoots of increased interest – and deals are being made as spring has sprung in Fulham. Roseanna says that Q1 this year saw signifcant improvement compared to the previous 18 months, pointing out that the market, by its nature a cycle, will always have its peaks and troughs. “Since the beginning of the year, we’ve seen a massive improvement on last year. In January we saw a huge upturn, I think psychologically moving into a new year was key.” Spring has seen this trend repeated. “The better weather always helps,” Roseanna tells me. “It’s light in the evenings, so people can actually see the exteriors and the gardens. Yes, prices have gone down, but we’re still achieving

good prices for property.” Roseanna forecasts that Q3 and Q4 will remain similarly constant: “I think what we’ve seen so far will continue. It’s a good time to buy and there is nothing more to be concerned about politically. The activity is returning to the market as a result.” Talk of prices leads her on to her next point, and it’s a key one for would-be

40

sellers hoping to achieve a positive outcome in the current market. Accurate pricing, according to Roseanna, is paramount. “You need to price a house sensibly to get the interest. If you’re not in a rush you can try a slightly higher price, but be prepared to be flexible on it. If a property is priced well, it will sell, as there is demand out there. Significantly, we’ve registered a lot of new buyers. It means there’s an uptake in interest across the market. London is still in its own little bubble and Fulham is holding its own.” As for which areas are proving popular, Roseanna explains that good houses garner interest regardless of the location, although The Peterborough

[PROPERTY] Estate remains enduringly popular. “That’s one of the areas still holding the pricing on a pound per sq ft basis,” she details. “But anywhere within five or 10 minutes walking distance of the tube will always have its attraction for the commuter belt. In the Bishop’s Park area, you have slightly bigger houses and gardens, which are really popular with the family market. “The streets just off Fulham Road are our bread and butter. We’ve noticed that people are more receptive to looking a little further out, as there’s more choice. Fulham has its little pockets, but people are more openminded than they used to be.”

“London is still in its own little bubble and Fulham is holding its own” In terms of demographics, according to Roseanna the majority of buyers are from the domestic market. The area has been known as an enclave for French and Italian residents, who, historically, have accounted for roughly 50 per cent of buyers in previous years. “Fulham has been popular with French and Italians and Europeans generally because of the schooling,” she says. “In terms of domestic buyers, there’s a mix of first-time buyers, young professionals and families.” Investments for the next generation are also proving popular. “I was out the other day with someone who has a 10-year-old and a 12-year-

old and they’re buying a flat for them,” Roseanna tells me. “Long-term it’s a good investment, it’s a very good place for your children to live and it’s on a good tube line.” Having spent three years living in Fulham, Roseanna is uniquely qualified to pronounce on the area. “It does help,” she says. “When someone asks how long it takes to walk to the tube, you do actually know.” Having the inside track is also useful when it comes to allaying the fears of protective parents. “One of the most popular questions is from mothers looking at buying flats for their daughters and asking ‘Is it safe?’. To be able to give that first-hand experience and say that as a young, single girl I lived here myself is great.” Although she no longer resides in Fulham, Roseanna is enthusiastic about the area, both as a place to live and work in. “It’s an overused word but I like the village feel of it” she tells me. “Fulham has its own unique charm; it’s very pretty when the sun’s out and it’s got lovely tree-lined streets and architecture. There’s a relaxed, community feel about life, but if you want to eat in a good restaurant or go to a busy pub you can. You’ve got the diversity of Fulham Broadway which is busy, compared with slightly nicer, quieter areas such as Parsons Green and Bishop’s Park. There’s a little bit of something for everyone.” 701 Fulham Road, SW6 5UL, 020 7731 7100, struttandparker.com
