Keep your finger on the pulse with our round-up of local news DISCOVERY DIG Fulham Palace is set to embark on a three-week dig this October at the historic home of the Bishops of London. The aim is to uncover the long-lost remains of the Medieval dove cot and manor house. Past excavations have unearthed exciting finds from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman and Saxon periods. Fulham Palace’s community archaeologist, Alexis Haslam, will lead a team of 30 volunteers, students and other archaeologists, while a series of public events and open days are planned to coincide with the project. approach Gun smugglers, attempted murder and why empathy is the key – local author Hugh Roberts reveals all about his fascinating life as we discuss the publication of his recent autobiographical book william monroe
a
s a young boy growing up on the Pembrokeshire coast, Hugh Roberts’ intrepid spirit led him to declare his own state, independent of mainland Britain. Captaining a tiny motor boat, he set off for a rocky outcrop in the sea called Stack Rocks, and planted a flag declaring the territory the Kingdom of Stack. “The bird poo was this deep,” Hugh laughs, gesturing to the height of his knees. “I waited for the police to come and arrest me, or air sea rescue to take me off to a hospital, but nobody was interested. I definitely have an adventurous spirit, I decided I wanted to have my own little island.”

nomadic life working in planning, design and development consultancy for new towns and infrastructure across six continents. It also seeks to explore the value of empathy, and the intrinsic role it plays within human interaction. When it comes to a genre, Hugh doesn’t want the book to be pigeonholed. “I do struggle with the genre,” he tells me. “Yes it is travel, because there’s a lot of travel in it, and to an extent it’s biography because it’s a lot of my career. But the subtitle Seeking Empathy with Strangers is a giveaway – it’s all about other people. When you work in places
like Algeria or Malaysia or Thailand, and you’re working for local people as a planner, you’re looking to improve the community through a new town or development. You’re involved in the social fabric of the country and you really need to understand people, hence the empathy and the need to relate. That’s what the book is really all about – finding that empathy if you can, or not, which is even more insightful, as you start to realise that there are some barriers which are insuperable.” Hugh’s a fabulous raconteur and accent impressionist, and his book, which is packed full of incident and humour, makes for a rip-roaring read. Notable highlights from a reel of bizarre and often comic situations include Hugh being caught up in a government coup in Bolivia and marooned on a

carted off and we were allowed to go.” Hitchhiking in South Africa saw Hugh unwittingly join forces with a suspected Master plan for Smart City Malta on behalf of developer investors from the UAE in 2007 gun-running mercenary. “I was tidal spit in the Pacific. managed their independence movement – Stack Rocks in Pembrokeshire had not done so unfortunately – but the South Africans were shovelling weapons up through the border. He regaled me with all these horrendous stories about a bush war with what he called the ‘Ters,’ terrorists who were coming in from Zambia and infiltrating the north of Rhodesia in those days. He was saying things like, ‘We stumble across the Ters in the bush and it’s kill or be killed.’ He went on like this for six hours. I never got to see what he was doing in terms of getting his car through customs as I had to get my passport stamped, but I was sure he was a gunrunner and that I was cover for him. There’s loads of stories like that in the book. Some are crazy, some are scary and most have a mild amusement factor – it’s been a good life.” I ask Hugh whether, in terms of drawing a conclusion, the book affirms that empathy is the lifeblood of human interaction. “Did you write my last chapter!?” he laughs. “The last chapter is titled Back Where I Started, Empathy Found? It ends very optimistically with a view that it’s a beautiful world despite all the horrible things and people that seem to inhabit it and dominate the news. If there’s any conclusion about how to find empathy with people if you don’t have any language, religious, cultural or political connections, the one thing you need to connect with is their agenda. Regardless of all the barriers that stand in the way of empathy, if you can speak to someone’s agenda, then you’re probably going to get listened to.” i2i Publishing, out now, £12.98. keeping it locale The general manager of Locale’s Fulham branch tells us about fusion menus, office Christmas parties, and the close bond she shares with her customers william monroe

he general manager of Locale Fulham, Linn Hedblom, has spent her life working in the restaurant industry. As a child she recalls finishing school for the day and going straight to the restaurant that her father owned in north Sweden. She moved on to work at various culinary establishments in her country of birth and London, before her journey eventually wound up in SW6 at Locale. Linn’s roots may be in Sweden – she’s even managed to sneak a Scandinavian gravadlax onto the winter menu – but head chef Cristiano Mattei hails from Rome. He has a rich and varied culinary heritage, having lived and worked in countries including Spain, Chile and Argentina, and this is reflected in the

Linn, who likes to be “everywhere” at once during shifts, has been at Locale since March 2015 and has a real bond with her customers. “We want to be people’s local, our mission is great neighbourhood dining,” she explains. “We get a lot of repeat customers. You get involved in people’s lives;
you follow couples from when they have their first date, then suddenly they’re expecting a baby and buying a new house! People come to have communion parties here, other families come after for a wake – you do get quite involved.” Locale’s loyal customers include Fulham FC fans, who make a habit of stopping in for lunch for a pre-game meal on match days. “Most of them have their specific tables, drinks and food,” Linn laughs. “I don’t know if it’s just a habit or if it’s a superstition. We get
around 60 people in on match days, if it’s an important game we’re packed.” Locale also has three wedding packages with varying menus available. “We’ve been doing wedding receptions for years, and we seat up to 55 people,” Linn says. “People do get attached and it feels natural to them to celebrate important occasions in their lives here.” We also do staff parties and dinners, but it’s the office parties that tend to be the wilder ones!” Christmas parties feature a traditional three-course meal with a Locale twist and Linn is currently busy taking bookings for the festive period. For New Year’s Eve, the restaurant is also throwing a huge black tie party: “It’s going to be glitter, glamour, dancing and drinking,” Linn says with a smile. a cut above
Meat is the order of the evening as the Journal samples exciting Spanish cuts at The World’s End Market on King’s Road WILLIAM MONROE

ur culinary journey at The World’s End Market begins on a Thursday evening, but the origin can be found in the tiny rural village of Jimenez de Jamuz, an hour outside the Spanish town of Leon. Here can be found José Gordón’s El Capricho Proprietor restaurant, as well as the ox farm where Gordón’s famous cuts of meat, which are aged between seven and 14 years old and matured in high-quality olive oil, originate from. The World’s End Market has collaborated with the meat connoisseur, who has devoted his life to rearing rare breeds of ox for the table, to deliver the exclusive José Gordón El Capricho tasting menu.
The steak is something of a show-stopper, bursting with juices and complexity The first item I cross swords with is the Ox Tongue, which has been slow-cooked for 72 hours and charcoal-grilled. For José Gordón meat is the monarch, the ruling influence of any dish, so there’s a noticeable lack of vegetation or garnish, aside from bread. Homage instead is paid to the meat, the oxen shrine at which my companion and I are to worship for the

evening. And it does deliver – it’s smoky, flavoursome and melts in the mouth. My companion’s Carpaccio from Entrecote, matured for an astonishing 180 days, is similarly tasty. I know because I purloined a piece: food envy is an unfortunate trait. The Picanha de Buey (a sirloin cut) is served rare and sprinkled with sea salt. Like the starter it’s delicious, although by this point I’m left thirsting for some accompanying greenery. The steak is something of a show-stopper, bursting with juices and complexity. The unique and extended ageing and curing process that it’s undergone has done wonders for the flavour.
On to dessert and you certainly can’t go wrong with a vanilla panna cotta with mango and yuzu jelly. After our meat extravaganza it’s something of a relief to replace savoury with sweet. A special mention must go to the décor, which really is outstanding. The Grade II listed building is flooded with natural light as we arrive, but a more intimate atmosphere is generated as dusk settles and the place begins to fill up. Features include industrial lighting, white butcher tiles and dark green leather seats. The overall effect is firstrate, and the Fulham and Chelsea set clearly concur; the restaurant is almost full by the time dessert arrives. For eager carnivores, the José Gordón menu is a must – you won’t be disappointed. What’s the main ethos of the brand?

What are your favourite hangouts in Fulham?
Where do you garner style inspiration for collections from?
Vix: Most of our inspiration comes from the amazing places we have been fortunate enough to travel to across the world. Our prints are created around places we have been to, or things we have seen. For example, our marbled print was a nod to the beauty of the Grenadines in the Caribbean. The styles themselves are inspired by the heat and humidity, and the ease and breathability of being able to wear the high-quality floaty silk that our pieces are made in.
Travel is obviously a key inspiration then – what are your top three favourite holiday destinations? Hattie & Vix: Capri is now top on our list after going this summer – we have never been anywhere more stylish
Hattie & Vix: Hally’s is a gorgeous little Californian-
or elegant. Ilha Deserta in Portugal is our happy place, having been brought up there in our parent’s villa every summer on family holidays. Our brother got married there in 2013. With a 10km stretch of deserted beach, it’s a perfect spot to get away from the summer crowds. Venice Beach in LA is also a huge part of our inspiration for our designs, as it’s beach life within a city.
You also have a children’s range?
Vix: Yes we do – when I decided to go back to work after having my eldest daughter Octavia, I knew that it needed to be something that she could be involved in. So we created a ‘mini me’ collection which has been a great success. Octavia even modelled the range for us.
Do you enjoy working with your sister? Hattie: Yes, I love working

And what do you like about being based in Fulham?

The development’s brand new Clubhouse has launched, which provides residents with their own private members’ club on their doorstep, catered to by a number of luxury partners including Selfridges, ESPA and Duck & Dry. Extensive health and wellbeing facilities at the complex include a state-of-the-art gym, a spa with a 20m swimming pool, sauna and steam room and two treatment rooms. In terms of leisure and entertainment, there’s a cinema screening room and dining space

of computers, gets to work eradicating the soreness, and my back and shoulders give off satisfying clicks and cracks as the knots are pummelled into submission. My therapist, hard at work at the coal face, also seems concerned with the state of my hips and lower back and twists and pulls my legs and back into various positions to work out the stiffness and tension. The leg and foot massages that follow are more gentle, but equally rigorous. Post-massage, feeling light and airy, I breeze into the spa with the intention of spending the rest of the morning in full relaxation mode. The spa is a masterpiece of luxe elegance, with a large 20m pool flooded by natural light from an intricate roof design. A traditional sauna sits next to a searing hot steam room, which makes my eyes water when I enter. It’s a little too much for me, but a stretch of time in there post night out would surely do wonders for the system. I hop into the pool and start out determinedly on my lengths – all two of them – before deciding I’d be better served lounging in the Jacuzzi, which has a relaxation bubble bench and a hydrotherapy massage chair with a jet to
service the neck and head. It’s all very satisfactory and I spend the remainder of the morning whiling away my time on one of the loungers. The level of service is exemplary at the Clubhouse. Having gone back to the changing room briefly for a cup of water from one of the cooling machines, I return to find my previously wet towel has been whisked away and replaced with a fresh one. Nothing is too much trouble for the smartly turned out staff, who remain ever-present to answer any queries, but unobtrusive. Robert Gittins, lettings manager at Knight Frank Fulham, tells the Journal about his hipster motorbike club, a run-in with alpacas and the Fulham property market william monroe
h
ipster bike clubs are just the tip of the iceberg for Robert Gittins, as I find out over a coffee in St Clements café with the personable lettings manager of Knight Frank Fulham. Sadly, since his last interview with the Journal, Robert has been forced to ditch his beloved Triumph motorbike. “It had these exhausts which were so loud it was embarrassing,” he laughs. So I’ve got something a bit more civilised now. I love it, I’ve even joined a hipster bike club in Shoreditch.” Robert regales me with various stories involving cases of confused identity with his twin brother Jon, who works at Knight Frank’s Chiswick office, and his mum getting a whistlestop tour of London on the back of his motorbike, which led to a particularly curious incident involving the purchase of a herd of alpacas. However, behind the raconteur lies a razor-sharp mind that can tell you the current price per sq ft on any street in Fulham at any given point of the year. Such precision means that Robert is on a pedestal when it comes to giving his clients accurate advice on letting their properties. “It’s a case of being

sensible about things,” he says pragmatically. “RPI at the moment is 3.9 per cent, if a client wants to come onto the market now, you’d say try and keep it at the same level playing field as it was 12 months ago. Prices haven’t moved on enough to start pushing boundaries. Test the market, but by the same token make sure you’re in line with your competition.” Robert tells me that one and two-bedroom flats are remaining constant in terms of their popularity, in juxtaposition with the family house market, which has its seasonal peaks and troughs. “We can’t get enough of one and two-bedroom flats,” he says. “There’s always demand for them. A lot
of it is professional couples; that’s the bread and butter of the market. What we have seen is an up-lift in people wanting to rent long term. Some of the lets we’ve agreed have been three-year terms.” Intriguingly there’s been a marked rise in property available in Fulham, with Robert estimating a 32 per cent increase compared with 2016. “There’s more choice for people, so what we’ve seen is a flight towards quality. Rather than seeing four of five properties, people are
[PROPERTY] going to have a lower EPC rating, is there going to be more migration towards applicants going for new-builds? We might see people start to become more savvy. It’s hard to gauge what the effect will be, but it’s an interesting one.”

going out to see 10 or 15. They’re more geared towards the ones that might not have been on the lettings market before, that are really well-presented and slightly newer inside. Our biggest successes this year on price per sq ft and overall prices achieved are properties that have never been to the market for lettings before.” Although Robert readily admits that the current market can be a little unsettled, the facts and stats all back up his message that there’s a good deal to be positive about. This August has been the best in the past four years for lettings at Knight Frank Fulham – and the office
is achieving excellent prices for prime properties. “There’s an amazing house we rented in the Peterborough Estate,” Robert tells me. “If we look back over the past year, it’s a price per sq ft record. It’s the dizzy heights of 91 pence per sq ft per week. The previous record for that was 74 pence per sq ft, so it’s a 19 per cent difference.” Changes with regards to Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) will bring a new element to the market upon their introduction in 2018. “All tenancies that begin after 1 April will be required to have a minimum EPC rating of E,” Robert explains. “Landlords will be prevented from letting a property until they comply. The pause leads Robert to digress from his insightful anaylsis and fill me in on Knight Frank’s Day of Giving, which will see employees take part in a 26-mile cycle ride/run between all of the offices in the south west London region on 12 October. “The Mayfair office are fierce competitors!” laughs Robert. “I’m not much of a runner, so I’m going to do it on a bike.” Back to the serious business, and I ask what we can expect from quarter four and on into 2018. “September, as is traditional, has been a busy month,” Robert replies. “It filters through to October. The family house market is in full flow right through until the end of the month. In November things start to change a little bit, but in December you can’t bank on it tailing off. The level of choice will start to get lower as you get towards Christmas – that’s the main dynamic that will change. The main thing is we’re not going to have an event that’s going to do something to the market. We’ve had Brexit, the elections, the change in Stamp Duty – all these things came into play.
