[INTERVIEW]
head’s up
The Journal sits down with Tim Cannell, the acting head of Parsons Green Prep, to discuss his vision for the school What Will You bring to the role of acting head at Parsons Green Prep? I bring a wealth of experience in education: as a teacher, headmaster and an independent schools inspector. This experience will allow me to understand the school in context and offer dynamic and measured leadership, bringing changes that will enhance overall learning and wellbeing.
What vision do you have for the school? My vision is for a school that opens childrens’ eyes to the future, instills a hunger for learning and allows them to live their lives to the full while enjoying all that childhood has to offer.
How will your previous role as head of The Prebendal School help you? The schools are quite different in some aspects, but there are a number of similarities between the two, such as being co-educational and the size. I have experience of ensuring that the curriculum encourages the development of soft skills, such as determination, resilience and selfconfidence and this is something else I hope to bring to PGP.
What will you BRING TO THE SCHOOL THROUGH YOUR role as an ISI inspector? Being an inspector will help me to readily understand the strengths and relative weaknesses of PGP, identifying areas for development and strengthening. My skills as an inspector

will put any future development on a sure footing and mean I won’t be making changes just for the sake of change.
PGP recently won an award for outstanding STEM provision - ARE YOU AN ADVOCATE OF STEM? STEM is increasingly becoming a key component of outstanding schools. A robust STEM programme should encourage children to see how different skills and competences are interlinked and it is a delight to be joining a school at the forefront of preparing children for an ever-changing and technologically advanced future that is beyond our comprehension.
What’s more important in your eyes, exam results or creating well-rounded individuals? Academic excellence is of course at the heart of school life. However, education
is not just about this. It does not matter how academically successful a child is if they do not have self-understanding and the confidence to share their views with others. By making the creative arts a very important part of what we offer at PGP, we will give our children opportunities to enjoy sport, music, art and theatre at their own level.
Will you be taking part in any teaching? As a head for the past 12 years it has been important to me to maintain a small teaching commitment. I will not be responsible for a class but I intend to be in the classroom and to work with the children alongside the teachers. By understanding what is happening in the classroom, I can make the biggest difference to the quality of education. Tim Cannell is currently covering Helen Stavert’s period of maternity leave. mum’s the word
Meet the mother of two behind the popular west London blog, Mummy in the City WILLIAM MONROE
f
ulham resident Tine Farstad is a mother to a five-year-old daughter and a son, aged two. On top of that she also works as a freelance financial journalist. There’s little time then for anything else, or so you would think. Tine however spends her spare hours and weekends bounding around west London with her daughter – and sometimes the whole family – in tow, and blogs about her explorations on her popular website Mummy in the City. As she explains, it’s the ideal lifestyle, marrying her inquisitive nature with her writing skills. “I used to have a travel blog,” she tells me. “But when I was pregnant with my first child I realised I would be doing less travelling, so it didn’t really make sense to continue. I work as a freelance financial journalist so I wanted to be writing. I started the blog just over five years ago. It’s something I love doing as I’m naturally restless and like exploring. It’s my hobby, it’s a fun thing to do on the side.”
She’s brimming with knowledge about family-friendly foodie options in the area The magazine-style blog focuses on toddler-friendly activities and events, and parents with small children in west London flock to it in search of fun family activities. The majority of Tine’s reviews focus on events, services, and restaurants. How does she juggle the blog alongside

a job and parenting duties? With difficulty, is the answer. But Tine wouldn’t have it any other way. “The blog is something I start at 11pm most nights,” she laughs. “I go to a lot of events, I like to be busy so I’m always out and about. If I do have spare time during the day then I try to write, if not then it’s something I do late at night.” Tine lets me in on a few secrets as to the best places to take toddlers in Fulham, with ‘story time’ on Thursdays at Nomad Books a particularly popular option for young children. “For my daughter’s birthday we did a kid’s manicure at Blush and Blow,” she continues. “A lot of people don’t know this but Chel-Ski offer ski courses for five years plus, so I’m signing her up! We use the parks a lot in the summer time and Cuckoo Hibou is also a
really lovely place for children.” Having lived in Fulham for three years, she’s brimming with knowledge about family-friendly foodie options in the area. Breakfast in particular is top of Tine’s agenda, with St Clements, Hally’s and Gail’s – “I’m there almost every day” – all popular options. If she manages to get some downtime with her husband, The Sands End pub provides a refuge. “Fulham feels like we live in a village, even though we’re in London and have easy access to all the attractions and activities that it has to offer,” she says. “The area is very family-friendly, I love that we often bump into people we know in the street or in local restaurants.” mummyinthecity.com

ow does Britain produce the next Steve Jobs or the next Martha Lane Fox? And how do we make sure that as the hottest new industries emerge it is British businesses and British skills that are leading the way? Here in Hammersmith & Fulham, we are doing just that. As a pro-business council that champions inclusive growth, our job is to provide the factors necessary for people to take advantage of opportunities. That means raising the levels of skills, ensuring strong infrastructure links and creating a proenterprise environment for businesses of all sizes. But it also means designing a borough that people want to work, relax and live in.
“Our new industrial strategy will drive the growth of our burgeoning bio-tech, creative and digital sector” Part of this is standing up for businesses who have felt battered by recent increases in their rates or companies who fear they will lose out when Brexit bites. So our new industrial strategy will drive the growth of our burgeoning bio-tech, creative and digital sector, as

well as supporting smaller businesses and entrepreneurs. That includes creating clusters of innovation in these industries by requiring property developers to set aside part of every new building for affordable, flexible office space that fosters new businesses and our next generation of entrepreneurs. We’re also looking at innovative measures not normally associated with local councils,
including a new venture capital trust and business rate cuts for key sectors. The borough is already home to major global businesses such as GE, Disney and L’Oréal, and we have a strong heritage of successful businesses in media and digital. Our new growth partnership with Imperial College London will allow businesses and startups to work side by side with worldbeating academics, translating research into commercial reality. In other parts of the country, we have seen metro mayors leading the charge for their local economies by driving the skills, transport and health and social care agenda. We hope that our corner of west London will offer an unrivalled challenge – not just to other boroughs, but to the rest of Europe – as the best place to do business.

[INTERVIEW]
that’s the spirit
We chat to Tom Jago, the man behind household names including Malibu and Baileys Irish Cream, about his latest venture, rare spirits brand Last Drop Distillers william monroe
You’ve been in the spirits industry for seven decades, is this the last hurrah for you?
what’s your personal favourite from The Last Drop collection? For me it has to be our first release: the 1960 Blended Scotch Whisky. I remember so vividly the first taste, straight from the cask, and realising that, after a hunt that had taken us all over Scotland and had us sampling hundreds of whiskies, we had found our treasure.
Not until I’m dead! I’m still working hard on new projects. The Last Drop Distillers was born out of [co-founder] James Espey’s and my mutual wish not to sit around twiddling our thumbs and our shared love for the spirits industry. In the world of distilled aged spirits, there’s always something old and fresh waiting to be uncovered.
Where did the idea come from for Last Drop Distillers?
Tom Jago
Peter Fleck, a very old friend and one of the founding directors, owns a chain of small luxury hotels called The Last Word in Rebecca Jago, Beanie Espey, James Espey, Tom Jago South Africa. He asked James and me to find an exclusive Scotch a warehouse in the Lowlands whisky to serve to his guests, of Scotland, untouched since and the name set off sparks it had been left over from a in our brains, which soon premium 12-year-old Scotch, turned into the bush fire you blended in 1972. see today.
And what’s the concept all about? We seek out very small, often forgotten, parcels of old spirits. Our original 1960 blend was a parcel of casks that were lying at the back of
16
You’ve lived in Fulham since 1986 – you must have a real affinity with the area?
What’s the oldest spirit you’ve released to the market?
Our current one, a 1947 ‘Hors d’Age’ Single Estate Cognac. It’s an exceptional cognac from a family who have been distilling
on their estate since the 18th century. My daughter Rebecca and I had the pleasure of visiting the current owner, whose father distilled it just after the end of World War II.
There must be setbacks when dealing with aged spirits? The most important thing to explain here is that old most definitely doesn’t mean good. The effect of wood can often spoil the spirit. We have a very simple judging system: the whole team has to taste and agree that we have found something truly delicious.
To be honest, my heart will forever belong to Cornwall, where I was born and raised. However, having lived in south west London all my married life, and having raised four children here, this is home. So we are rooted in this lovely part of the city, with the river and the green spaces on our doorstep.
And your favourite place for an alcoholic beverage? I like to drink a pint of beer at The White Horse. Other than that, my 6 o’clock whisky in my armchair at home is just about perfect! lastdropdistillers.com

moroccan adventures The Bahia Collection by rug company Loomah is inspired by travels in Morocco and the African, Arab and Mediterranean influences that make up the country’s rich tapestry of cultural heritage and architecture. The six-piece collection is based on Zellige, the traditional geometric mosaics that form a key part of Moroccan architecture. A colour palette of deep blues and shades of turquoise was inspired by a trip to the town of Chefchaouen, which is known for its distinctive blue-washed buildings. 592 King’s Road, SW6 2DX, 020 7371 9955, loomah.com

THE DESIGNING HAND We talk through EMR Home Design’s latest project with director Emilie Mauran WILLIAM MONROE
T
he director of EMR Home Design, Emilie Mauran, talks warmly and with enthusiasm about the company’s latest renovation project on Cambria Street. “The clients were different from my typical ones because I normally work with young families,” she explains. “Their priority was their living space, so the challenge was to optimise the space and add value without spending too much. I like a financial challenge because then you have to be clever about what you do.” The renovation of the three-storey townhouse involved a ground floor rear extension, a full internal refurbishment and a garden redesign. “They wanted to work on the light,” Emilie tells me. “We opened up everything to have a big living room with an open-plan kitchen. We put in a six-metre window, so the garden had to look stunning because it’s the main view when you come into the house.” The kitchen was redesigned with a focus on space and practicality. “They love to entertain so it needed to be big enough for that,” Emilie says. The master bedroom was also adapted to include an en suite bathroom and dressing room complete with bespoke joinery. Joinery is one of Emilie’s main interests, and she relished the challenge of meeting her clients’ individual needs when it came to their dressing room and storage. Emilie explains that the key to any successful project is a good relationship with both her clients and builders. “We really pay attention to project management. A team effort is how you get the most out of everyone.” As part of this hands-on approach, she has two

“I like a financial challenge because then you have to be clever about what you do” WhatsApp groups for each project – one for herself and her client and the other for herself, the client and the builder. It’s this personal service and attention to detail that makes EMR Home Design such an attractive proposition to many of its clients. Emilie is currently working on an array of different townhouse projects,
with the company expanding out of Fulham into surrounding areas. She’s also set her sights on renovating restaurants, as food is one of her major passions. Although she’s an expert in her field, Emilie explains that she doesn’t have a set formula. Instead, she enjoys taking on different projects and working with varying budgets and unique structural spaces. “I find it boring if I just replicate the same layout,” she says. “I enjoy having different challenges. It’s not just a job, it’s a passion.” EMR Home Design, 07484 922003, emrdesign.co.uk
VIEW FROM THE CLIENT “Emilie was amazing to work with. She instilled confidence at all stages of the build and design and offered the appropriate level of compromise, without reducing quality or practicality. I can’t recommend her more highly.”

The studio director and owner of The Hot Spot Yoga tells the Journal about Bikram Yoga in 40-degree heat, class camaraderie and sessions by candlelight william monroe
The Hot Spot Yoga is, as its name would imply, a
a client and now I’m the owner, so I have a unique insight into knowing what my clientele want.
hot yoga studio in Parsons Green. We teach Bikram Yoga in 60 and 90-minute classes. The ethos of the classes is to give people a wonderful hot home in which to practice.
We say come well hydrated – you’re going to sweat a lot. We recommend at least half a litre of water before you arrive and to have at least a litre of water during the class. As long as you come hydrated it’s like any other form of workout.
Bikram Yoga is a set sequence of 26 postures and two breathing exercises. No matter where you go in the world, the practice of Bikram will always be the same. It’s accesible to everyone, from beginner level to advance. You get a really meditative, restful state of mind.
On Friday and Sunday we do candlelit classes. It shifts the energy a bit. Bikram can be quite physical, so candlelight brings it down a notch and is a great way to unwind on a Friday or Sunday evening, before you head back to the office.
In terms of the physical benefits of hot yoga, it allows your body to become more flexible. It’s like a blacksmith heating the metal before they bend it; it’s the same with your body. It increases circulation and your lung capacity and it’s great for strength training and cardio. It’s also good for your skin and toning, it’s really an all-over workout in one.
The heat is there to assist; it accelerates your warm up. We start with a deep breathing exercise and you’re ready to go. It warms up the body from the inside out, allows a deeper stretch and to go into the postures
more safely. If you did a lot of the postures in a colder room and are not naturally flexible you could probably pull a muscle. The hot room gives you a safety net.
Everyone’s really supportive, there’s a great vibe at the studio. It’s one of the reasons I bought it. It appeals to all age groups, you get retirees, teens, millennials. It’s not a type of yoga where it’s female centric. It just ticks all the boxes.
I’m local, I’m actually my target customer! I’ve lived in the Fulham area for 16 years. I started practicing at the studio when it opened 12 years ago, I became a teacher four years after that and then I bought it. I come from the grassroots. I was

trade on postcode alone, they must have world-class product to match. When we consider the Fulham stretch of the Thames, from Wandsworth Bridge along part of the famous Boat Race as far as Hammersmith, there are the following three top new additions to consider. BKC has green-lighted plans to turn Chelsea Farmers Market into a new mixed-used scheme, despite something of a backlash from local residents. The well-known site at 125-135 Sydney Street – home to the Chelsea Gardener among others – is owned by Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, which is offloading some of its valuable local assets to raise funds for a new wing at the main Royal Brompton Hospital. PDP-designed proposals went in last July seeking consent to replace the garden centre and mix of retail and food outlets into four blocks delivering 59 resi units, “flexible” retail space (Class A1, A2, A3) and some landscaped public areas. Some 136 objections have come in from residents, with just three in support, but planners have decided to go with the idea on the basis that the redevelopment “provides opportunity to mend the fragmented townscape and provide uses, public realm and architecture which could enhance the setting of the surrounding conservation areas and other designated heritage assets”. The four new part five, part six-storey
pong table and outdoor gym.
buildings – referred to as Sister Block, Mews, Garden Block and Britten Street – will throw up a range of resi options, from flats to mews houses, with associated parking, private gym and residents’ swimming pool. As the scheme will be directly funding a new hospital wing, there’ll be no onsite affordable housing. The terraced houses that used to occupy the SW3 site were demolished in the 1970s, and the 1980s saw a set of what RBKC describes as “ad hoc, shed-like” structures go up in their place, with other areas used for car parking. The Council has also Ok-ed the redevelopment of four Grade II listed properties owned by the Trust at 117-123 Sydney Street. The buildings – which are being offloaded for the same purpose – are now set to deliver four resi units at part ground, first and second floors with retail Class A1, A2, A3 at ground and lower ground levels. PDP drew up the designs for both schemes, with DP9 sorting planning.
Fulham Reach – A St George scheme with some of the best ‘lifestyle extras’ I have come across anywhere on the Thames. These include a private members’ club featuring an array of hotel-style facilities such as a gymnasium, swimming pool, sauna, steam room, virtual golf, snooker room, wine cellar and screening room. Queen’s Wharf – A Mount Anvil scheme and one of the team’s favourites. Smaller and more personal than some of the larger schemes, it sits next to the Grade II listed Hammersmith Bridge and offers some of the very best views of the river. It will house the remodelled Riverside Studios with theatre, café, restaurant, bar and cinema. Due to the rise of recent high-quality completions on the river, Fulham can stake a claim to both a first-class postcode and product. Knight Frank Riverside, 020 3641 5871 knightfrank.co.uk

BRIDGING THE GAP
A spectacular LED bridge has been built in Chelsea Creek
T
his unique bridge across the canal at Chelsea Creek was commissioned by St George and designed by architects Broadway Malyan. It is the first of its kind in the UK to use up-lit acrylic rods as balustrades. The design comprises 336 acrylic rods in total and a single LED up-light under each rod which creates a lovely night-time effect. The bridge is designed as a sculptural element, enriching residents’
experiences and creating desirable views across the canal. It also has practical benefits, linking the boulevard on Park Street to the gardens behind Countess House and The Chelsea Creek Tower and offering local residents a route to and from Imperial Wharf Station. The Bridge is 3m wide and 23.5m in length and consists of curved steel beams, curved lightweight acrylic rod balustrades, timber decking and handrails, with feature lighting to the bridge and below.

Living is Easy When
life’s for rent Draker Lettings has opened an office on Fulham Road to much fanfare as the Journal finds out FRANCESCA LEE-ROGERS
T
his summer, Fulham Broadway welcomed a new resident in the form of Draker Lettings. The dynamic, hardworking lettings agency has opened its second office on Fulham Road and has witnessed a deluge of enquiries from landlords and tenants eager to sign up since the office opened its doors in July. The Journal was keen to find out more over a cup of coffee with Draker’s managing director, Tim Hassell… “A lot of people who start their own business set out to reinvent the wheel, when the reality is that few manage to make their existing model work as well as it should.” Wise words from the man who is at the centre of Draker Lettings’ rise to success. Tim Hassell’s ethos is simple – work hard to offer 24/7 honest reliable client care, delivered consistently, leading him to expand Draker’s successful operation with a second office on Fulham Road. Previously serving Fulham from Draker’s Sloane Square address, Tim always had his sights set on opening a dedicated office in SW6. So the combination of a strong market and a great location, meant that he was ready to grow the business and open a Fulham office. Barely a couple of months in, Tim and his team have already noticed significant differences between Chelsea and Fulham’s landlords and tenants. “I learned quickly that Chelsea is more formal, whereas in Fulham you have to be more approachable.

“I have met the most incredible and diverse bunch of landlords and there’s so much positivity around the whole process. I find it quite overwhelming – we’re genuinely making a difference to our clients’ lives.” It is this approach that Tim prides himself on. With a genuine and refreshing perspective, he tells me how he has never wanted to be a “ruthless business person”, and that instead, he believes in “hard work, logic, system, structure and kindness”. It’s about understanding and helping your clients to achieve what they need with a focus on care, integrity and trust.” This model has clearly paid dividends for Tim, who in 2010 opened
his Sloane Square office securing an impressive £12,000 in rental fees in the first month. “In seven years, we grew to just under £2.5m in revenue, and last year alone, we let more than 500 properties.” It is such drive, ambition and local market insight, that has seen Tim and his team succeed in letting 30 properties in the first four weeks since opening in Fulham, and already the office has 50 properties on its books. Tim is someone who believes that his actions should match his words and as a tenant himself, he has firsthand experience of what it means to rent in London. “This is the way the market is heading; every indication is that life is easier if you rent.” 581 Fulham Road, SW6 5UA, 020 7042 1200, draker.co.uk
