Dolce & Gabbana aw16 a contemporary fairy tale Fairy-tale princesses were the key inspiration behind Dolce & Gabbana’s AW16 collection, who were brought to life in a modern fashion. The catwalks saw dazzling embellished dresses teamed with glittering crystal slippers, as well as extravagant prints and luxurious fabrics, including silks and velvets. Ensuring it wasn’t all damsels in distress, D&G also introduced clunky boots, spiked heels and trunk-like bags for the 21st-century princess. DOLCE & GABBANA, the galleria

Checkmate For print perfection this season, introduce checkered accents into your winter wardrobe. Whether it’s an understated red check on a navy blazer, or Burberry’s iconic tartan scarves, prints don’t necessarily have to be bold. Subtle checks are a great way of adding flair to your work wardrobe, especially in dark shades of grey, green and navy. This season, burgundy and other maroon tones have also proven popular, so if you’re looking to make a subtle statement, why not pair it with a solid block of colour, like this Pal Zileri coat, Coach tote or Berluti knitwear?

Hello Sunshine Hang on to the summer season and incorporate a burst of citron into your Autumn/Winter wardrobe. Dip your toes in the trend with a pair of black Geox sneakers with yellow trim, or these brown Berluti brogues (pictured) that opt for a similar burst. For an alternative citron statement, swap your neutral watch strap for something a little brighter – a simple and subtle statement to your overall look. However, as the Kenzo fashion show proved, you don’t have to be conservative with this shade. If you dare to be bold, go top to toe in yellow or opt for this loud puffer jacket with fur trim by Coach. >

Inherent today, and throughout the brand’s history, is this desire to remain ahead of the times; in fact, Vivier was the first designer to use plastic in his creations. Without a doubt my off-white skirt that I purchased from Dior two years ago that I love and still wear now. The cut is particularly flattering, the fabric is thick but comfortable and it sits nicely. It has a delicate silver zipper along the front which gives the piece a modern touch, while still keeping it classy. There are so many timeless classics that can be found at The Galleria.
How do you think culture and fashion come together in Abu Dhabi? Fashion is everywhere. It’s now considered as an important element of life here in Abu Dhabi; whether it’s the car you drive, the house you live in, the architecture and interior of buildings or most importantly, the clothes and jewellery you wear. Everything can be considered fashion nowadays. My favourite aspect of Abu Dhabi fashion is the moderate and trendy clothing worn with beautiful abayas and kaftans draped over them. Finally switching from plain black to a variety of different colours has been a great style evolution. Emirati women have evolved in terms of fashion and are increasingly becoming more stylish and up-to-date on the latest global trends.

MASTERING
THE MECHANICS The world of mechanical watches can be a daunting one for the uninitiated. The centuries-old techniques and inventions make it both compelling and perplexing. Here Chris Hall takes us through some of the most common types of watch jargon
Automatic watch Boucheron Reflet A fundamental distinction, this relates to how a watch gets its power. Assuming we’re talking about a mechanical watch, they split into two camps: automatic and manual. Manual watches are powered by a spring, which is wound up by hand (typically every 2-3 days). Automatic watches make use of what’s called an oscillating rotor, or winding rotor – a semi-circular piece of metal which rotates freely when the watch is worn, connected to the mainspring. An automatic watch doesn’t require winding if worn regularly, but if left stationary for several days, may need to be hand-wound to give it a jump start. BOUCHERON, THE GALLERIA SEE MORE AUTOMATIC AND GMT WATCHES AT

Chronograph Graff Chronograff From the ancient Greek ‘chronos’, meaning ‘time’, and ‘graphos’ - ‘to write’, a chronograph is any watch capable of measuring elapsed time at will. The function is what you would otherwise know as a stopwatch, except a chronograph watch keeps normal daily time as well. Chronographs are identified by up to three ‘subdials’ within the watch’s face, which record the elapsed hours, minutes and seconds, and (usually) two ‘pushers’ – buttons on the side of the watch which start, stop and re-set the chronograph function. Moonphase Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Earth and Moon One of modern watchmaking’s more romantic and whimsical complications, a moonphase watch is, as it sounds, one which features a counter displaying the phase of the moon. Generally positioned at 6 o’clock on the dial, a moonphase counter typically features a rotating disc with an engraved moon that rotates once every 28.5 days - the period of a lunar cycle. Serving little practical purpose in today’s society, moonphase dials are often used as an opportunity for watchmakers to showcase their decorative skills, engraving

the moon in gold, or painstakingly hand-enamelling the dial.

CARTIER, THE GALLERIA
Tourbillon Bulgari Daniel Roth Tourbillon From an old French word for ‘whirlwind’, or ‘hurricane’, the tourbillon is one of watchmaking’s most prestigious complications, and also one of the most misunderstood. Invented by one of the greatest watchmakers of all time, Abraham-Louis Breguet, it only really serves a practical purpose in pocket watches. But don’t think that its presence on a wristwatch is to be scorned - making and decorating a tourbillon is an elite skill, and including one in your line-up remains the surest mark of quality. BULGARI, THE GALLERIA
GMT IWC Ingenieur Dual Time A GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) watch is one of the more practical complications you’re likely to find on a modern watch. It has its roots in the historical need for sailors to remain aware of the time at the Greenwich Meridian, and allows you at-a-glance visibility of the time in any two different time zones. Identified by a large, extra hour hand from the centre, a GMT watch is often fitted with a 24-hour scale on the watch’s bezel to help distinguish between day and night in the far-flung time zone of which you’re keeping track. have technically been possible for Nico Rosberg to claw a championship victory. Suffice to say, Hamilton won the race emphatically, and double points were never mentioned again – but the Abu Dhabi race had made its mark clearly on the world of F1. There have been some career-defining performances from drivers at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. One of the most memorable was in 2010, when four drivers were in contention for the title. Fernando Alonso was in front with 246 points, chased by Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel on 238 and 231 points respectively, with Lewis Hamilton in fourth place with 222 points. The 23 year-old youngster Vettel clinched the race to win his first of what would go on to be four consecutive championship titles and one heck of a winning streak with Red Bull Racing. But it’s not just the wheel-towheel action
that 2016 etihad airways abu dhabi grand prix 25-27 november
makes the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix such an iconic fixture; the Yas Marina Circuit itself is spectacular. Designed by the great Hermann Tilke (behind other iconic F1 tracks like the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore and the Bahrain International Circuit), its 21 corners twist through Yas Island and directly through the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel with a series of exhilarating straights and technically demanding bends. Tickets are still available for this year’s race and with the way the 2016 season is shaping up, the season finale looks set to be a corker. Will Lewis Hamilton manage to pull clear of teammate and arch rival Nico Rosberg to clinch another championship? Will Red Bull see off rivals Ferrari for second place? Judging by the season so far, it will all come down to the chequered flag at the Yas Marina Circuit this November. >

Local Link: The Might of Richard Mille High-end watchmaker Richard Mille is clearly as popular in Formula 1 as it is with Abu Dhabi collectors, as the brand this year has links to two F1 teams. Although both are currently battling in the middle of the pack, McLaren Honda and the Haas F1 Team have very different backgrounds in the sport. McLaren’s racing pedigree is unquestionable, with 50 years in the business. The Haas team is a newcomer to F1 for the 2016 season, although the name is well-known in other forms of motorsport. “The McLaren brand has existed at the very pinnacle of Formula 1 racing for 50 years, and its reputation for continual technical innovation, painstaking attention to detail and race-winning success perfectly matches the philosophy of the Richard Mille brand,” commented Mille himself as his eponymous company announced a new long-term partnership with McLaren Honda earlier this year.
“Richard Mille is a pioneer in the watch industry, and the company is renowned worldwide for its technical innovation and pursuit of perfection in each timepiece,” said Guenther Steiner, team principal, Haas F1 Team. “Their values perfectly mirror our approach to our first Formula 1 season. A new dining sensation… Roberto’s restaurant recently opened at The Galleria in Abu Dhabi, bringing a true, luxurious taste of Italy to the Middle East. We sit down with Roberto’s new chief culinary advisor Enrico Bartolini

T
he Galleria is Abu Dhabi’s luxury shopping and dining destination. It houses a wide selection of renowned brands in a light-filled, high-ceilinged, atrium-like building, with a long list of internationally renowned restaurants. Now, that list includes Italian fine dining destination
Roberto’s Restaurant & Lounge. It opened to great success in Dubai in 2012 and now Roberto’s has expanded to The Galleria, bringing well thought out, immaculately executed Italian dishes to the capital of the United Arab Emirates, along with the expertise of Enrico Bartolini, the Italian two-star Michelin chef who was announced as chief culinary advisor and ambassador of Roberto’s Group last year. He applies all his experience and knowledge on all restaurant matters, creating and designing new menus and dishes and training kitchen staff and chefs. “Al Maryah Island will become the top destination for connoisseurs in Abu Dhabi,” Bartolini says. “Now is the time to step in and be a part of this new rise in food culture. We are aiming to bring Abu Dhabi’s discerning culinary crowd to this luxury location and offer them our own unique 360 degree experience of Italian fine dining and entertainment.” The Galleria has a discerning clientele and Roberto’s has a lot to live up to, but knows its audience well. It offers “distinct dining areas, a fully open-fronted kitchen, a Crudo bar and lounge, as well as unique design features with modern and slick Italian interiors.” Essentially, Roberto’s >

a clear vision of the kitchen,” Bartolini says, and the first “true” dish he mastered was “Tuscan soup, with anise biscuits and

grilled chicken, under the direction of my Aunt Emilia.” As for more recently: “I’ve travelled all over the world to learn new techniques and about different cuisines, flavours and spices…and then [I] take this experience to extract new dishes,” Bartolini says. “In many ways the traditional Tuscan cuisine is very much like the local food of Abu Dhabi and the whole region. The slow cooking of the meats, the use of spices, the pleasant presence of “fats” and the balance of the flavours: it’s so fascinating to make those comparisons between different regions and cultures.” There are further parallels between the Middle East and Italy in terms of how food should be enjoyed. “A restaurant should always be first and foremost a place of pleasure. I personally love to share, and in Italy, a restaurant is a place to socialise together. The concept of sharing is what brings people together. In my own family the food is always placed in the centre of the table…at Roberto’s we created an elegant version of this concept where similar to Arabic culture, this socialising and sharing is truly part of everyday life,” says Bartolini. Sharing foods in a luxury setting with a buzzy vibe? As you may imagine, we’re thrilled that Roberto’s has arrived in Abu Dhabi, and with Enrico Bartolini at the helm, excellent things are happening. Our advice? Book now. ◆
