Chaumet’s Hortensia collection The Hortensia high jewellery collection blooms with floral designs that reflect Chaumet’s style for which he became famous in the early to mid1800s. The animated meanderings of plant motifs capture the romantic spirit of the time, while the glint of opals, tourmalines, sapphires and curved lapis express the irrepressible, effervescent and eternal nature of love itself. chaumet, the galleria

peacocking at gucci Since his appointment to the role in 2015, Gucci’s new creative director Alessandro Michele has been one of the most talked-about figures in the fashion world. From lace overlaid with animated tropical birds to languid silks printed with lush floral motifs, the designer’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection did nothing to dispel the buzz. It spoke not only to a new era for the brand, but also a new era for masculine style, both sizzling with expressionism, experimentation and eccentricity. gucci, the galleria

going grey There are a multitude of new ways to wear this urban favourite. A steel-toned tailored suit needn’t be as conventional as it sounds. Polo shirts were layered under pinstripe blazers at Lanvin’s show for a casual take on the corporate staple, while at Berluti tailored suit trousers were accessorised with slip-ons. Try experimenting with layering tones and textures such as suede jackets with buttery leather panels hot off the Bottega Veneta runway, or channel Carolina Herrera’s New York chic with turned-up, grey suit trousers teamed with sportsluxe sneakers. >

Zip-Up Jacket
Ermenegildo Zegna
The globe-trotting residents of Abu Dhabi are used to the merciless air-conditioning on airplanes, in cars and at airports. A leather or suede zip-up jacket is a necessity for frequent travellers, this easy-to-pack outerwear staple is perfect for slipping over kanduras or shirts. Saint Laurent and Tom Ford both offer a stunning boxy black leather version this season, while Pal Zileri’s baby blue jacket or dusky pink buttoned blazer would look fantastic teamed with a tan carry-on bag and loafers. Finish with earthy worn-leather and wood accessories that will keep you looking sleek wherever your destination may be. ◆

Planes, trains & Automobiles The timepieces that set 2016’s international watch fairs alight take inspiration from the world of automobiles and aviation. We attended Baselworld watch fair in Switzerland to seek out the hottest new models available from brands at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island
IWC schaffhausen In homage to the golden age of aviation, IWC Schaffhausen launched its new 2016 Pilot’s Watch collection. The first IWC Pilot’s Watches of the 1930s and 1940s set technical benchmarks, their dial (designed in accordance with military specifications) determined the overall appearance that has remained so distinctive to this day. The latest collection is also built with frequent flyers in mind, allowing the wearer to change timezones with a simple twist of the wrist. Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen explains “this year, IWC is launching yet another world-first: the Pilot’s Watch Timezoner Chronograph. It’s the first timepiece where a new time zone, including the date, can be set merely by turning the bezel.” Al Manara International Jewellery & IWC Schaffhausen boutique, The Galleria
Longines While IWC was up in the air, Longines took inspiration from the automotive world for its big release of Baswelworld: the Longines Railroad. A punctual, precise and good quality timepiece has long constituted a must-have piece of equipment in the railway industry. At the beginning of the 20th century, Longines watches were worn by employees of railway companies from Serbia to Chile, Canada, Turkey and China. A tribute to the adventure of the railway, the Longines Railroad harks back to the technical and aesthetic

TAG Heuer TAG took to its roots on the racing track with a brand new wrist watch marking the anniversary of a vintage piece from their design archive. The 2016 Heuer Monza Calibre 17 Chronograph, a 42 mm chronograph with a black titanium case, was modelled after a watch made by the brand 40 years ago. Also called the Monza, both the 2016 and the 1970s version were named after the Formula 1 track in Italy on which Niki Lauda solidified his World Drivers’ Championship win with Ferrari in ‘75. The diameter on the new 2016 edition has also been increased from 39mm to 42mm, for a more modern, masculine look, while the “racing” strap comes in full-grain black calfskin with top-stitching, mirroring the three-spoke steering wheel found on the racing cars of the time. The case is now made from grade 5 titanium rather than the heavier steel, and coated with titanium carbide to give it a modern matte appearance. > Al Manara International Jewellery & Tag Heuer boutique, The Galleria

Cartier Cartier’s most exciting reveal this year was arguably the updated Cartier Crash Skeleton. The original Crash was released in 1967, after a customer came in to the London store with a watch that had been mangled in the wreckage of a car crash and asked if the brand could revive it. Back in the workshop, Cartier’s designers (swept up by the creative freedom enjoyed in London in the 1960s) were intrigued by the details that had been deconstructed to Dali-esque proportions, and the idea for the Cartier Crash was born. The 2016 model proves that the brand excels in the art of ‘skeletonising’ (chiselling away the majority of the metal of the watch’s movement to allow for views of the inner mechanical details) and the updated Crash shows off this prowess to jaw-dropping effect. roger Dubuis One of Roger Dubuis’ hottest releases of the year is the rugged and sporty Excalibur Automatic Skeleton Carbon. Clad in a high-tech composite known as carbon fibre sheet moulding compound (SMC), a material produced by compressing carbon fibres with resin and steel at extremely high temperatures, the model is both harder and lighter than its similar predecessors. Like all Roger Dubuis’s skeleton calibers, the watch’s movement was designed from scratch and with 167 handfinished components incorporating the brand’s distinctive “star” motif. Al Manara International Jewellery & Roger Dubuis boutique, The Galleria
“horologists were inspired by the greatest engineer the world has ever known: Galileo”
officine Panerai Panerai’s 2016 hero piece is their Lo Scienziato Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titanio. After setting themselves a mission to design a watch with classic Panerai characteristics but lighter in weight, the brand’s horologists were inspired by arguably the greatest engineer the world has ever known: Galileo. With a 47mm dial, the skeletonised model allows for a full frontal view of the movement and the 144 hour power reserve. The Luminor 1950 case is made of titanium (which is 40% lighter than steel) but to reduce the weight of the watch further, it’s formed using an innovative technology called Direct Laser Sintering which enables the case to be hollowed out internally, forming a complex geometrical cavity which makes the piece extremely light despite its heavy-duty style. ◆ Officine Panerai, The Galleria

WHERE TO EAT In London you can sample every cuisine from Peruvian to Persian in sophisticated settings across the city and Mayfair is home to dozens of the very best of the city’s restaurants. China Tang and Hakkasan Mayfair both serve first-class Asian food and Corrigan’s Mayfair does brilliant British food. The French restaurants stand out too – Le Gavroche, run by Michel Roux Jr, is justly renowned and Hélène Darroze at The Connaught blends formality with rustic touches. If you’d like to experience very traditional fine dining, ask your hotel concierge to book a table at Scott’s. This seafood restaurant was founded more than 150 years ago and is known for its oyster bar with a three-metre-long crustacean display.

Ajami grew up in northern California. Her parents, from Afghanistan, were restaurateurs themselves; her father ran front of the house and her mother was the chef in the kitchen. Her cross-cultural dishes include delicious Mantoo dumplings, cooked for Marjon by her mother, which has proved to be the restaurant’s number one seller.
