ANALYSIS Concrete Lawn is located at the centre of University of Melbourne, surrounded by the Union House, the Baldwin Spencer Building, Melbourne School of Design and the Raymond Priestly Building. It used to be a lake, but later filled into Union Lawn to improve the efficiency of land usage. The lawn was converted into concrete in 1968 and Sun Ribbon Sculpture is constructed in 1982. OBSERVATION and ANALYSIS: Following close observation of the site, it can be concluded that the lawn/grassy area in front of the Baldwin Spencer building is not reaching it’s full usage potential. The lawn has a waist high hedge on its perimeter on three sides. The only access pathway is along it’s south facing boundary. The space lacks entry and exit points and is therefore not as accessible as it could be. The lawn provides students with a potentially useful space as the areas surrounding it sees much foot traffic and there is constant movement around it. Despite this, the intensity of the space is very low. RESPONSE: To address this issue, increased accessibility to the area be implemented, as well as heightening the appeal of the area, drawing students and teachers to the spot as an appealing space where one would want to spend time. To do this, we increase entry and exit points to the lawn on the North, West and East sides, with paths connecting in the middle of the lawn. These access points would be two metres wide, have timber railings either side and, to pay tribute to the site’s history as a lake, have small water motes/streams behind the railing. The paths ground would be paved with bluestone, a material that is historically used throughout The University of Melbourne. To further increase its use we would provide more seated area around the trees which provide shade throughout most of the day and also shelter from the rain. The seats would be made from timber to create cohesion through the lawn. The timber would mean that despite exposure to sunlight the seats wouldn’t become too hot to sit on, and are appealing due to the large number of trees surrounding them.
