LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATIVE DIMENSIONS OF INTERIOR DESIGN

In this project, my group focused on exploring the active fire safety requirements outlined in the Uniform Building By-Laws (UBBL) in Malaysia. Through site observations conducted at Taylor's University, we had a firsthand learning experience that provided valuable insights into the practical implementation of these regulations.

During the site observations, we were able to explore various aspects related to active fire safety, including fire detection and alarm systems, fire suppression measures, emergency exits, and evacuation routes, and the use of fire-resistant materials and compartmentation. By closely examining these elements and comparing them to the UBBL requirements, we gained a deeper understanding of how legislative and regulative dimensions shape the design and safety of interior spaces.

The project was not only educational but also enjoyable and conducive to our learning. Through collaboration within the group, we were able to share our observations, discuss their implications, and critically analyze the university's compliance with UBBL regulations. This hands-on experience allowed us to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications, enhancing our understanding of interior design in the context of fire safety regulations.

Overall, this project provided us with a valuable opportunity to explore the legislative and regulative dimensions of interior design, specifically active fire safety. By conducting site observations at Taylor's University, we were able to apply our knowledge, learn from real-world examples, and further develop our skills in understanding and implementing regulatory requirements in interior design projects.

ASSIGNMENT 2 KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE FORUM

+ PDW SUMMARY

This assignment, titled "Knowledge Exchange Forum + PDW," comprises three tasks worth a total of 35% toward the final grade. Its objective is to promote democratic exchanges and encourage active participation in online forums, facilitating personal and academic growth through peer communication.

Students are required to form groups based on project themes and propose suitable abstracts closely related to their group theme. Additionally, students must participate in the forum each week, as participation carries marks. They are also expected to write a concise summary/reflection of their thoughts on each forum (200 words maximum) and attend at least six seminars during Professional Development Week (PDW). Following PDW, students must submit a summary/reflection of their thoughts on each seminar (500 words maximum per seminar), along with text and image content, in PDF format

This assignment aims to foster professional interchange and ideasharing among students, providing opportunities for personal and academic growth.

ASSIGNMENT 3

Future Practices (Formation of IDCP)

This assignment sets the scenario for students to re-imagine and reconceptualize the ideal architectural practice of the future. Participants are encouraged to consider various challenges often faced by architects/designers and propose solutions and innovative business models.

In deciding the desired business context, students need to evaluate critically the data obtained in Project 1. In doing this assignment, students will be clearer about their own vision and mission in forming their own design company within the business context. This is achieved through reflection on one’s own actions and learning in applying effective business practices

Throughout this project on "Future Practices (Formation of IDCP)," my group members and I have envisioned the establishment of an interior design consultancy practice company, Studio YBS, a partnership-based company.

In crafting Studio YBS's vision and mission, we focused on addressing current generation issues while benefiting both ourselves and the community. Our aim was to create a company that would have a positive social, environmental, and economic impact. To achieve this, we considered specializing in areas like sustainable design, adaptive reuse, or wellness-focused spaces to differentiate ourselves in the market.

One of the essential aspects of our project was financial planning. By projecting capital, income, and expenses, we gained valuable insights into the financial feasibility of starting and running Studio YBS. This helped us ensure the company's sustainability and efficient management of resources.

This project provided us with an invaluable learning experience. It allowed us to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, fostering critical thinking and problemsolving skills. As we developed Studio YBS's concept, we gained a deeper understanding of the intricate aspects involved in setting up an interior design consultancy practice.

Overall, this project was an exciting and enriching journey. It instilled in us a sense of purpose and the determination to create a socially responsible and successful interior design consultancy practice in the future.

FINAL PROJECT

BY-LAW APPLICATION AND PREREQUISITES FOR BUILDING PLAN SUBMISSION

This assignment allows students to apply the knowledge gained in Project 1 to their individual projects in AIAD2. Each regulatory, legislative, and technical provision must be illustrated in an informative report presentation with dimensions, drawings (including isometrics), and materials where necessary. Students will be assessed based on their ability to explain and apply knowledge and understanding to their Final AIAD2 Project.

This exercise serves as a working paper for AIAD2 Students' design shall not change or be influenced by the laws due to both modules’ time constrain factor, instead, it acts as an overall guideline to address the next forthcoming steps before finalizing the building plans. Thus, students are asked to identify non-compliance by marking an (x) and describing the next course of action for design rectification This rigorous process is essential to ensure compliance with the law before the drawings can be submitted to the Local Authority.

BY-LAW APPLICATION AND PREREQUISITES FOR BUILDING PLAN SUBMISSION

In our final assignment on "By-Law Application and Prerequisites for Building Plan Submission," we were encouraged to utilize our project from AIAD2 and crosscheck our design to ensure compliance with applicable by-laws and requirements. Specifically, I focused on my design for a Chinese Hokkien lantern ritual-making community center based in Georgetown, Penang Island.

This session proved to be fruitful as I examined whether my design met the requirements and adhered to the by-laws. It allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of various factors, such as purpose group classification, means of escape for fire safety, and creating a disabled-friendly space for users with disabilities.

The assignment was particularly relatable since it involved assessing my design. This familiarity enabled me to identify areas for improvement and navigate the process more effectively. By evaluating my design against the by-laws, I became more aware of the specific regulations and requirements that are crucial for ensuring the safety and functionality of the community center.

Overall, this assignment provided me with a valuable opportunity to apply my knowledge of by-laws and prerequisites for building plan submission to my design. It allowed me to assess my compliance, gain a deeper understanding of the importance of various factors, and identify areas for further improvement.
