AVOCADO

LADY BUGS ON A STICK Did you know that avocados are considered a fruit? This unique fruit is a source of heart healthy fat. This fat is important for growth and development of the nervous system, brain and heart. An avocado also provides fiber, folate, potassium, iron, vitamin C, vitamin E, and works as an antioxidant. These nutrients help perform many functions including: helping your digestive system, muscle building, helping to create red blood cells, promoting healing and boosting your immune system. Avocado tips: • Use it in place of mayonnaise and other condiments. • Serve it on sandwiches and hamburgers. • Mash it as a dip with your favorite vegetables. • Add it to your favorite smoothies for a creamy texture. • Make a creamy salad dressing or add chunks to your favorite salad.

INGREDIENTS • 1 large, ripe avocado-seeded, peeled, and mashed • 1/4 cup salsa • 8 celery stalks-washed and trimmed • 12 small grape tomatoes-cut in half lengthwise (Let a parent help with the cutting!)

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 Stir the salsa into the mashed avocado to combine. STEP 2 Fill the hollow in each celery stalk with the guacamole mixture. STEP 3 Top each celery stalk with 3 grape tomato halves. SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

WAYS WE USE MONEY Hello friends! Last month, we talked about all the ways you could earn money. After you’ve earned money, there are a couple things you can do with it. You can spend money to buy the things you need like clothes and food. You can also spend money on the things you want like toys and candy. You can also save money by putting it aside to use later. It’s a good idea to make sure you set aside the money you want to save first. You can save money at home in a piggy bank, or you can save money at the bank in a savings account. Penny chooses to save money in a Synergy Bank savings account because she knows it is a safe place. The money she brings to the bank is called a deposit. Penny keeps track of all her deposits in a book called a register. She loves watching her savings grow!

Penny has been making deposits in her Synergy Bank savings account so she could buy her mom a plant for Mother’s Day. Penny has been keeping track of her deposits in her register. Take a look at Penny’s register. Can you tell how much money she has in her savings account? Savings Account Register Date

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12. This is the perfect time to show your mom how much you love and appreciate all that she does. Here’s something special you can make for your mom for her special day.

Handprint Flower Boquet Supplies needed: • Construction paper • Washable kids paint 1. Use green paint to draw three flower stems and two leaves as shown in the picture. 2. Paint your hand with the first color you have chosen for your flowers. 3. Press your hand on the construction paper just above one of the stems. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have handprints for each of the stems. 5. Place your work in a safe place so it has time to dry. Once the paint is dry, you can write a message to your mother on it if you wish. You could also draw a sun, a butterfly, bugs, or whatever you want! Make sure you keep it hidden until Mother’s Day, so your mom will be surprised!

SOLAR OVEN S’MORES Engineer yourself some s’mores by using the heat of the summer sun! With just a few household items and an old pizza box, you can harness the energy of the sun to heat and melt the chocolate and marshmallows for a delicious treat!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Pizza box, wiped clean (any small, cardboard box will do in a pinch!) • Aluminum foil • Plastic wrap

• Graham crackers • Marshmallows • Chocolate bar • Scissors or box cutter

WHAT TO DO: 1. Cut a 3-sided opening in the top of your pizza box using scissors or a box cutter. Lift up the flap and crease on the side that’s still connected to the box. 2. Lifting the opening, use a large piece of aluminum foil to cover the flap.

C a m p Li f e i s t h e Best Life!

3. Line the bottom of the pizza box with aluminum foil. 4. Place graham crackers, marshmallow and chocolate into the solar oven. 5. Lift the entire top lid of the pizza box, including the flap. Place a layer of plastic wrap over the lower section of the box, above the food items, to protect the s’mores. Use painter’s tape to make sure there are no gaps or holes in the plastic to ensure that you create a real greenhouse effect. This will help to trap the sun’s heat to cook the s’mores. 6. Place your solar oven outside in direct sun, positioning the top aluminum foil-coved panel so that the sun reflects into the box. (It can take up to an hour to fully cook, depending on the weather.)

SUMMER SWIMMING

GREAT FOR DEVELOPMENT, EXERCISE AND FUN! Whether planning a beach getaway or lounging by the pool, families will inevitably be around water more during the summer. There is no better time than now to teach your child to swim or merely brush up on their swimming and safety skills. Here’s why!

Keep in mind that water does come with risk, but those risks may be avoidable if your family has awareness, effective education, and training. Swimming skills are water safety’s foundation. While swimming is fun and incredibly healthy, know that it is the only sport that can prevent accidental death in an emergency. Follow these tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics to keep your children safe around water:

• Swimming is an essential life skill, and it’s never too early or too late to start! In 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics stated drowning is the secondleading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1-14 but may be decreased if provided swimming lessons between the ages of 1-4.

• Whenever children under age 5 are in or around water, an adult – preferably one who knows how to swim and perform CPR – should be within arm’s length, providing “touch supervision.”

• Summer months are fun months! As it quickly heats up, there are many opportunities for families to have fun in the water, create a safer environment for your family by empowering your children with swimming skills.

• Make sure pool gates open out from the pool, and self-close and self-latch at a height children can’t reach. Consider alarms on the gate to alert you when someone opens the gate. Consider surface wave or underwater alarms as an added layer of protection.

• Swimming is a fun way to stay active and healthy. With less structure during the summer, it can be tempting for kids to spend a lot of time in front of the television. Encouraging children to swim helps develop a healthy lifestyle at an early age.

• Avoid inflatable swimming aids such as “floaties.” They are not a substitute for approved life jackets and can give children and parents a false sense of security.

• Hone in your stroke skills. Take time in the summer months to help your child progress in their sport! When leagues start in the fall, those who spent time in the water during the summer will have an advantage with their stroke progression.

FAMILY FIRST

• The decision to enroll a child in swimming lessons should be made by the parent based on the child’s developmental readiness and exposure to water, but swim programs should never be seen as “drown proofing” a child of any age.

14

MARCH 2019

• If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first. • Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors. • Children should wear life jackets at all times when on boats, docks or near bodies of water. • Make sure the life jacket is the right size for your child. The jacket should not be loose and should always be worn as instructed with all straps belted. • Children follow your example, whenever you are on a boat – everyone, kids and adults should wear a life jacket. • Never swim alone in open water. Even good swimmers need buddies! • Make sure your child knows never to dive into water except when permitted by an adult who knows the depth of the water and who has checked for underwater objects. • Teach children about rip currents. If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore until you escape the current, and then swim back to shore. • At the beach, stay within the designated swimming area and ideally within the visibility of a lifeguard. • Seek shelter in case of storm. Get out of the water. Get off the beach in case of lightning. The Wellness Center of Thibodaux Regional offers programming year round in its state-of-the-art climate controlled Aquatics Center. A UNIVERSE OF STORIES! There’s a universe of stories to discover—and they’re all at your library. Whether you want to read about aliens, black holes, or space cowboys, there is something for everyone at your library. This summer, the Terrebonne Parish Library will be kicking off its annual Summer Reading Program on May 27th. By reading for just 20 minutes a day, library users of all ages can earn coupons and the chance to win big prizes (bikes for kindergarten to sixth grade, and Kindle Fire tablets for teens and adults).

Be sure to drop by any of the nine library branches or visit www. mytpl.org/srp to sign up! In order to get you and your family in the mood to celebrate summer reading, here are a couple of my favorite books about exploring outer space. Mae Among the Stars

Star Stuff: Carl Sagan and the Mysteries of the Cosmos

Written by Roda Ahmed Illustrated by Stasia Burrington When Mae Jemison was little, she had a dream to dance among the stars. With her parents encouragement that, “If you can dream it, if you believe it, and work hard for it, anything is possible,” she began her journey towards becoming an astronaut. Despite some discouraging words, she was able to become the first African-American woman in space.

Written and Illustrated by Stephanie Roth Sisson

Mae Jemison’s real life story of becoming an astronaut is very inspiring, and this beautifully illustrated book will encourage the youngest readers to pursue their dreams.

Carl was always fascinated by the world around him. Whether it was the smallest of bugs or the biggest of stars, he wanted to learn more. Young Carl took that quest for discovery to his local library where he started his journey with a book about stars. That trip to the library was the first step on his path to becoming Dr. Carl Sagan, the famous scientist, creator of the TV

BICYCLE SAFETY COMES FIRST!

felgersfootwear.net Mon - Fri 10-7 • Sat 10-5 1539 MLK Blvd • Houma 985.851.1559

BY NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION

May is Bicycle Safety month, and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reminding drivers and bicyclists to do their part to help reduce deaths and injuries on our roads. “We encourage bicyclists and motorists to put safety first,” said Deputy Administrator Heidi King. “Take simple precautions - remain focused to the road and the traffic around you; anticipate what others may do, before they do.” Bicycling is fun, healthy, and a great family activity. But a bicycle isn’t a toy; it’s a vehicle! Some bike crashes can cause serious injuries and most are related to the behavior of you (the bicyclist) or the motorist. There are a number of things you can do to prevent a crash, and protect your brain if a crash occurs. FAMILY FIRST

20

MAY 2019

Before riding, make sure you, your family, and the bicycles are ready to ride. Always remember to: Wear a Bicycle Helmet: Everyone – at every age – should wear bicycle helmets. Helmets come in various sizes, just like hats. Measure your head to find your size. The helmet should sit about one or two finger-widths above your eyebrows. It should fit sung; no rocking back and forth! Quick test to make sure it’s on correctly and snug: give a big yawn! The helmet should pull down on your head. Adjust Your Bicycle to Fit: Stand over your bicycle. There should be 1 to 2 inches between the rider and the top tube (bar) if using a road bike and 3 to 4 inches if using a mountain bike. The seat should be level front to back, and the height should be adjusted to allow a slight bend at the knee

when the leg is fully extended. The handlebar height should be level with the seat. Check Your Equipment: Before riding, inflate tires properly and check that the brakes work. See and Be Seen: Whether daytime, dawn, dusk, bad weather, or at night, make yourself visible to others. Wear neon, fluorescent or other bright colors when riding, to be most easily seen. Wear something that reflects light, such as reflective tape or markings, or flashing lights. Remember, just because you can see a driver doesn’t mean the driver can see you. Control the Bicycle: Ride with two hands on the handlebars, except when signaling a turn. Place books and other items in a bicycle carrier or backpack.

Use Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication: This includes eye contact with drivers, turn signals, pointing to road hazards for bicyclists behind you, and stating “passing on your left,” or “on your left.”

SPECIALIZING IN

Magical Entertainment By Frank & Tammy (Since 1997)

Avoid Riding at Night: It’s hard for road users to see bicyclists at dusk, dawn, and nighttime. Use reflectors on the front and rear of your bicycle. White lights and red rear reflectors or lights are required by law in all States. Children younger than 10 years old are not consistently able to make the decisions necessary to safely ride unsupervised in the street. Therefore, they are safer riding away from traffic.
