CONTENTS Sweet Summertime As an adult, looking back on my childhood, the two things I miss the most are naptime and summer! When I was in elementary school, we looked forward to summer break with so much anticipation. Summer meant family vacations (ok, maybe some were work conferences that we tagged along on), more time at the pool, and seeing our cousins more. I grew up kind of in the country and on a lot of land. My mom would just open the backdoor and instruct my brother and me to play! We didn’t have cable, computers, gaming consoles or anything that today’s youth have that just wasn’t around in the 1980s. But we still managed to have fun. I hope you enjoy June’s issue. We have included a fun little scavenger hunt that will take you along Bayou Terrebonne in downtown Houma. Don’t forget to bring some snacks for the turtles! And sent us your pictures! A special thank you goes out to our cover model Christopher Vyas. We hope you enjoyed your photoshoot!

HEALTHY BITES WITH TGMC | BY MICHELLE BRICENO, REGISTERED DIETITIAN

BERRIES

BERRY POPSICLES

Berries should be at the top of your grocery list this summer. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are not only sweet and colorful, but packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, potassium and folate. One cup of berries has 40-84 calories (depending on the berry) and is an excellent addition to any healthy diet. Berries are low in fat, sodium, and have no cholesterol. Citrus fruits aren’t the only Vitamin C rich fruit. One cup of strawberries contains 160% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps heal cuts and wounds, helps our bodies grow healthy and strong, and improves our immune system. Make sure to eat a variety of fruits for the best health benefits this summer and throughout the year.

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup frozen berries of choice • 1 ripe banana • 2 pitted dates** • 2 Tbsp. milk (or more to blend)

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 In a blender, add all ingredients and blend until smooth. STEP 2 Pour into popsicle molds. STEP 3 Add popsicle sticks. STEP 4 Freeze 4-5 hours. STEP 5 Enjoy with friends! Serves: 4-5 **Dates are very high in fiber to help our digestive track and a healthier sweet addition without adding table sugar. SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

PENNY MAKES A BUDGET Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about making a budget. A budget is a plan for your money. Before you make a budget, you must first understand the difference between needs and wants. Needs are things we need to survive and stay healthy. This includes food, water, clothes, shelter, and medicine. Savings could also be considered a need. Wants are things we don’t need but would like to have. Examples of wants are video games, books, and candy. When making a budget, it’s important that we plan to spend our money on our needs first. You can spend the money leftover or the things that you want. If you don’t have enough money for everything you need and want, you’ll have to determine what is most important and pay for those things first.

Below are all the things that Penny plans to buy this month. Can you help her pick which things are needs and which things are wants? $100

S.T.E.M. ACTIVITY

DINOSAUR EGGS

WHAT TO DO: STEP 1 Color your baking soda! One box of baking soda makes approximately 3 eggs, depending on the size of your dinosaur. Simply add your drops of color to a bowl of baking soda and carefully mix. (I highly recommend you use gloves. My hands are still blue.) STEP 2 Once the baking soda is colored carefully add some water. For one box of baking soda use approximately 1/4 cup of water. Add it slowly and mix thoroughly before adding more. It should be crumbly, but still a bit like paste so it will stick together. If you add too much water, simply add more baking soda to absorb. STEP 3 Take a palmful of the baking soda paste and squish it about to make a ball. Press in a dinosaur. Then add more paste to the top and sides until the entire dinosaur is encased. STEP 4 Place on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and set in the freezer. Freezing helps to set the baking soda dinosaur eggs. They freeze very quickly and are ready within an hour, or leave them in overnight. STEP 5 When you are ready to hatch your eggs, set the baking soda dinosaur eggs in a large dish like a casserole dish. Pour your vinegar in a small bowl and give your child the syringe.

Hatch a baby dinosaur with a simple chemical reaction! This activity explores the popular baking soda and vinegar reaction.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Baking soda (16oz box yields three eggs)

• Casserole dish or some other container

• Water (1/4 cup or so)

• Dinosaur toys

• Food coloring • 10mL oral syringe • White vinegar (at least 4 cups)

STEP 6 Squirt your baking soda dinosaur eggs to start them hatching! It takes A LOT of vinegar squirts, but once a dinosaur part starts to show, it gets exciting! (Don’t get impatient and just pour the vinegar over the eggs. The reaction just causes the bubbles to overflow!) Tips: • You may wish to have the kids wear safety glasses depending on their age and competence with the syringe. Vinegar in the eyes is not fun. • This can be a messy activity! Prepare the area appropriately. • You may need to empty the casserole dish periodically as it fills with vinegar and baking soda. • Have fun with colors! Make multiple batches of different colors. For some extra fun, hide one color in the middle with a different color on the outside. Another trick is to add sparkles or glitter to the middle so they are released during the experiment as your dinosaur is coming out. •

• Parchment paper Optional: • Rubber gloves • Safety glasses FAMILY FIRST

GET MOVING WITH THIBODAUX REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

LET’S GET PHYSICAL! As parents, it’s difficult to find time to exercise, right? We can all relate. But moving our bodies is a basic part of caring for ourselves. We feel a lot more energetic when we move and stretch. It actually changes the chemistry of our bodies so we’re happier, more relaxed, and our bodies are healthier. We not only look better, we feel better – and exercise offers us the ability to be better as parents.

When you're confined to the house, play "Take off each other’s' socks," wrestling, or chase games. (Games that gets your family laughing! That's a huge bonus, because you're helping them evaporate any anxieties they're carrying around.)

The secret is setting aside the time to do so. Even ten minutes a day outside together is a great start during the week. On the weekend, you can plan an outing. Before you know it, you’ll have worked up to 20 minutes daily, with an hour on weekend days. Sure, you’ll skip some days. But if that’s more exercise than you’re getting now, you are on the right track!

Let your exercise time double as social time by walking with a friend and child; the kids will entertain each other.

Chasing your toddler all over the playground? Turn it into a positive, get a pedometer, and work up to 10,000 steps a day.

Take family pride in how far you can park from your destination and walk. (“Is this a two block day? Let’s go for it!”)

Load the kids and their bikes or scooters into the car and drive to the track at your local high school or University in the evening or on the weekend when it’s empty. Let the kids ride their trikes or bikes around the track, while you walk or jog.

Let each person in the family take turns being the leader while the rest of the family follows, doing jumping jacks, sun salutations, sit-ups, or invented moves.

“FitMama” yoga classes will help you keep good form while you get your stretch on. Classes can be found at your local yoga studio or Fitness Center!

Simply put your “Let’s Get Physical” time on the calendar. Then, choose a fun family activity that requires physical exertion. When you find something you love doing, do more of it. Soon you’ll have a whole repertoire of family physical activities that make everyone in your family happy. You won’t believe how much ten minutes of movement daily will lift your mood. And when we feel good, it has an almost magical effect on our children. We have a lighter touch, and a sense of humor. We don’t get triggered as easily. All of which makes our kids happier and more cooperative. You’re also getting your child hooked on an active lifestyle, which is a great counter-balance to all that screen-time in our lives. Kids who are physically active into the preteen and teen years are 75% less likely to be overweight when they’re grown. If you do this every single day, you’ll all start looking forward to it. Exercise is a great way to nurture yourself and your child at the same time! For more information contact the Fitness Center of Thibodaux Regional, 985.493.4950.

MONTHLY NUTRITIONAL TIP: Teach your children to eat a rainbow of natural colors at each meal. This makes it easier to balance the food groups! For guidance on how much your child should eat from each food group, use the USDA’s helpful guide: ChooseMyPlate.gov
