Are we having fun yet? It was so exciting to see everyone’s back to school pictures filling my social media feed for the first few weeks of August! All the big smiles on everyone’s faces showed the excitement of the new school year. My own little one started school this year, as a Pre-K student. This is our first year of uniforms, big classrooms and lots of new friends. He was very excited the first week, but by week two, he started dragging his feet a little more to get the to car each morning. I know he loves it, but man, the back to school blues have already hit hard. Here’s hoping you and your children are having a great new school year!

HEALTHY BITES WITH TGMC | BY MICHELLE BRICENO, MS, RD, LDN

APPLES

INGREDIENTS

HEALTHY APPLE “DONUTS”

• 6 apples, washed • 1/3 cup melted dark chocolate • 1/3 cup almond butter or nut-free

“An apple a day will keep the doctor away.” We have all heard the saying, but do you know what it means? Apples were once prescribed to patients to treat depression, digestion, inflammation, and even as a beauty therapy. Today, we know that apples are full of nutrients with wonderful health benefits. For example, eating whole apples has been shown to cleanse teeth and fight bad breath. The fiber in the skin acts like a toothbrush to scrub plaque from your teeth and the acid in the juice helps kill off bad bacteria. So, what in an apple helps “keep the doctor away”? Apples, mostly in the skin, contain fiber, flavonoids, vitamin C, and potassium. One medium apple contains about 100 calories and 20 percent of your daily recommended fiber. The fiber helps keep our digestive tracts healthy and regular. Flavonoids, also known as plant pigments, have been shown to reduce our risk of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. Vitamin C helps promote healing and prevents colds and potassium helps us maintain a healthy blood pressure. So next time you are on your way out the door, grab an apple for an easy, nutritious snack on the go.

butter, melted

TOPPINGS • Granola • Raisins • Ground cinnamon • Unsweetened coconut • Colored sprinkles • Mini dark chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 Cut apple slices into 1/3 inch-thick ring slices. With an apple corer, knife, or melon baller, remove the core to resemble a donut ring. STEP 2 Melt the chocolate and nut or nut-free butter in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds. Transfer each into a zip or piping bag and cut off the tip. STEP 3 Place apple slices onto wax or parchment paper and let the kids drizzle the chocolate or nut butter over the apple slices and top with their favorite topping. Serves: 12-18

SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

PENNY USES MATH TO COUNT AND SAVE Hello friends! I hope you all have had a great start to the school year and are enjoying learning about new things every day. What is your favorite subject? My favorite subject is math—that is probably why I love to save and count money so much! When dealing with money, we use math all the time. We can count our dollar bills and coins, as well as practice adding and subtracting. When we put money into our savings account, we are adding to it. When we take some of our money to spend, we are subtracting. When you are in math class, think of all the ways you can use what you are learning to help you save your money! It’s not only the beginning of school, but it’s also the beginning of football season! Penny is looking forward to meeting up with friends to watch local high school teams. She brings her change to buy concessions and spirit items. Can you help Penny determine how many of each coin she’ll need to purchase the items below? Remember, there can be more than one answer because you can add different coins together to reach the correct amount.

S.T.E.A.M. ACTIVITY WITH HOUMA FAMILY DENTAL

HOMEMADE PLAY DOUGH While there is nothing wrong with the store bought kind, it’s fun to explore the science behind how you make the popular sensory toy. To make our play dough, the dry ingredients salt, flour and cream of tartar combine to produce a ‘mixture,’ without any chemical reaction occurring. As we mix the liquid ingredients with the dry ingredients, we create a ‘solution.’ When we apply heat through the boiling of the liquids, a chemical change occurs and a new ‘substance’, our play dough, is formed!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • 1 cup flour • 1/2 cup salt • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar

• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • Food coloring • An adult’s help

• 1 cup water

FAMILY FIRST

12

SEPTEMBER 2019

WHAT TO DO: STEP 1 Mix dry ingredients: Add the flour, salt and cream of tartar to a medium mixing bowl. Whisk to combine. STEP 2 Boil liquids: (This part is for the Adults!) Add the water, vegetable oil and food coloring to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. STEP 3 Mix wet and dry ingredients: Slowly pour the flour mixture into the hot water. USE CAUTION! Stir constantly until a stiff ball of dough forms (about 3 minutes). Allow the dough to cool in the pan for 5 minutes. STEP 4 Knead until play dough is soft and pliable: Remove the dough from the saucepan and place on your work center. Knead the dough with your fingers for about 2-3 minutes or until soft and pliable. Tips: • Store refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 months. • Please use caution when mixing the dry with the wet in the hot pot! If the boiling liquid splashes, it can burn. • It’s ok if all the dry mixture doesn’t stir into your ball of wet dough. Just combine as best you can. • Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the dough during Step 3. We used lavender for a calming effect during indoor play on a rainy weekend!

HEALTHY TIPS FROM THE FIT KIDS CLUB! Stretch

This tall, cool gal is here to say, “Eat five fruits and veggies every day!” • Give kids 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. • Prepare more meals at home, as a family. • Prevent diabetes, heart disease and many forms of cancer with a diet rich in fruits and veggies.

Hoot

Hoot’s wise advice is to get out and play, “Turn off the TV and computer – get moving today!” • Limit screen time (TV, video games, computers) to 2 hours or less per day. • Avoid putting a TV in your child’s bedroom. • Encourage children to be physically active before allowing screen time.

Spark

Spark has just one rhyme he likes to say, “Take an hour each day to go out and play!” • Get at least 1 hour of physical activity each day. • Plan family walk time after dinner. • Encourage kids to join a school sports team, club or dance class.

Flip

This thirsty frog says what he thinks, “Stick with water and skip the sweet drinks!” • Avoid serving soft drinks or sweetened drinks to kids. • Encourage water between meals because it helps kids feel full. • Add fruit like lemons or limes to your water for better flavor.

Keeping children on a healthy track will help prevent the risks for health problems during their youth and as adults. Obesity is on the rise for American children according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In fact, there are almost three times as many obese kids ages 6 to 19 as there were 30 years ago. Is my child at risk? Weight problems in children and adolescents are generally caused by not being active, not eating well, or a combination of the two, according to the US Surgeon General. Genetics and lifestyle affect our children’s weight also.

It’s The Journey

TIME FOR FALL GARDENING! BY HEATHER KIRK-BALLARD, LSU AGCENTER

Mon - Fri 10-7 • Sat 10-5 1539 MLK Blvd • Houma 985.851.1559

September is here! School and football are upon us, and we are eagerly anticipating cooler fall weather. While we usually think of spring as the time to get “growing” in the garden, there is plenty to do in the fall as well. In the vegetable garden, remove spent summer tomato, pepper, eggplant and other plants that have tuckered out and plant seeds of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, cucumber, kale, lettuces, lima beans, Swiss chard, Southern peas, shallots, squashes and turnips. If your springplanted eggplant, pepper plants and okra still look good, let them continue to grow. They often produce another fall crop. I get excited just thinking of my fall vegetable garden.

PREPARING

Transplant fall tomato plants into your garden the first week of September for south Louisiana. You should be checking often for insects and disease as they are more prevalent during fall. Treat if needed. Consult local extension specialists in your area for more information. Some suggested cultivars for fall production are Florida 91, Phoenix, Sun Leaper, Solar Set, Sunmaster and Talladega.

FOR SUCCESS Behavioral Health Individual & Family Counseling

Start planning and selecting trees and shrubs for fall planting. But hold off until the weather cools to plant these. Planted now, they will be stressed in the heat and will require a great deal more watering and care to get them established. It’s best to wait until cooler temperatures arrive. Container plants can, however, be successfully planted with a great deal more TLC if you want to plant now.

Medication Assessment & Management Psychiatric Evaluations

I’m getting excited for the purple and gold chrysanthemums. They’ll be in the nurseries before you know it, just in time for some fall tailgating.

TIPS FOR GARDENING WITH CHILDREN: It is wonderful to get kids interested in gardening. Give them a packet of seeds and a little spot of their own, show them what to do and watch the magic happen. Spending time in the landscape with children, especially young ones, requires adults to pay careful attention, though. Just as you would childproof an indoor room, it’s important to take safety precautions in the yard to keep young ones safe. The following are some tips on outdoor safety with children. • Never leave a toddler or young child outdoors unattended. • As they get old enough to understand, teach your children never to eat any plant unless an adult is supervising. While eating fruits and vegetables you’ve grown yourself is part of the joy of gardening, many common ornamental plants can make you sick if you eat them some are very poisonous. • Speaking of poisonous plants, make sure that poison ivy is not allowed to grow in your landscape. Watch for this vine with three-part leaves and immediately eliminate it if you find any. If needed, herbicides such as glyphosate and trichlopyr can be used to control it. • Do not allow children to eat soil from the garden. Some soils may contain relatively high amounts of lead or other toxic substances and should not be consumed.

• Field Trips

• fun for every age!

• Private Parties

• Most Escape rooms under one roof in the country!

• try our new kid friendly room!

279 Enterprise Dr #102, Houma Like us on Facebook & get a free clue.

• Check for plants with spiny leaves or thorns – such as cactuses, roses, yucca, hollies or pyracantha. Point out any potential hazards to children and fence-off areas or plants that should be avoided. Remove dangerous plants, if necessary, especially if they are close to a play area. Do not plant spiny plants next to raised porches, decks or steps where children might fall into them.

$20 OFF BIRTHDAY PARTY OF CHOICE!

• Be careful with sharp tools and discuss with your children which tools are safe for them to use and which are not. When you lay down tools between uses, place forks, rakes and other pointed tools with the tines down. If kids are around, keep your eye on the tools you lay down when you are not using them – or put them away promptly when they are no longer needed. • If you want your kids to do some gardening, it’s a good idea to purchase tools specially made for children and properly sized for them to use. This gives them a chance to identify more closely with gardening, since they have their own tools. It’s safer, too. • Be especially watchful of young children around ponds, pools, large puddles, buckets and large containers of any sort. Small children can drown in even small amounts of water.
