What are you thankful for? This November, I challenge you and your family to list one thing each day that you are thankful for. No matter how big or small, saying things you are thankful for out loud helps you to be happier each day. I am thankful for my family: My husband and son are true blessings. I am thankful for coffee: As a working mom, it definitely helps to get me moving in the mornings. I am thankful for warm blankets and fuzzy socks: My feet are seriously always cold. And I am thankful for friends like you that read the things we write! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

HEALTHY BITES WITH TGMC | BY MICHELLE BRICENO, MS, RD, LDN AND SARA BREAKFIELD, DIETETIC INTERN

DIRECTIONS STEP 1 In a bowl, mix honey with peanut butter. Microwave for 45 seconds, stirring every 15 seconds, or until melted. STEP 2 In a large bowl, combine oat cereal, 1/2 of the yogurt chips (save the other half for later), chopped almonds, and dried cranberries. STEP 3 Pour the melted honey mixture into the bowl and stir until well mixed.

CRANBERRIES

NO-BAKE BREAKFAST BARS

What are the benefits of eating cranberries? Besides holidays, cranberries are often over looked during the rest of the year. These tart berries have amazing health benefits when added to your regular diet that may surprise you. Cranberries are naturally low in sugar and contain vitamin C, minerals, and fiber. Research shows that cranberries may help the entire body including aiding in stomach, oral, and heart health. Did you know? Cranberries were actually called the “wonderberry” by Native Americans because of the multiple ways they could be used. This included using the berry as medicine and using it to color rugs, blankets, and clothing. The Native Americans made an ultimate survival food called pemmican. Pemmican was made by mixing the mashed berries with meat and then drying it. When done properly, it could last three to five years at room temperature. In today’s world, 95 percent of cranberries are used to make juices, sauces, or jellies. Cranberries and their health benefits can be used in many other ways such as adding them to oatmeal, muffins, trail mix, cookies, and so much more.

INGREDIENTS

STEP 5 Freeze for 30 minutes. Once the mixture has hardened enough, cut it into 8 pieces. STEP 6 Melt the other half of the yogurt chips in the microwave for 15 seconds at a time, until melted. (Optional: adding 1 tsp. of coconut oil will help with the melting process) STEP 7 Dip the bottom of the bars in the melted yogurt chips and place on a piece of parchment paper. Freeze for another 15 minutes. STEP 8 Wrap each bar in parchment paper & store in the refrigerator or freezer for up to 3 months. Serving Size: 8 Bars

• 1/2 cup honey

STEP 4 Pour into an 8x8 baking pan lined with parchment paper, and gently flatten the mixture evenly around the pan.

SYNERGY BANK PRESENTS SYNERGY CENTS WITH PENNY D. PELICAN

PENNY GIVES THANKS Hello, friends! What do you do on Thanksgiving? At the bank, some of my friends have a big Thanksgiving dinner. They play games, visit with family and friends, and of course, cook a big feast! At this time of year, we are thankful for so many things, which is why I like to do something different for Thanksgiving. Some of my friends and I give back to our community on Thanksgiving by helping to serve meals to the homeless, visiting nursing homes, or by donating to food banks. Giving back is an important part of helping our community and an amazing way to show we care. On behalf of my friends at Synergy Bank, we wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving.

WATERCOLOR LEAF PRINTS When we think of fall, we dream of the changing of the colors of the leaves the northern portion of our country experiences. With this project, we are able to replicate the beautiful colors often found in trees as their leaves change color and prepare for winter. While most trees turn shades of red, yellow and orange, as an artist you are welcome to use any colors you wish for this project.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Watercolors • Heavy paper such as watercolor paper • Paintbrushes • Water • Leaves

FAMILY FIRST

14

NOVEMBER 2019

WHAT TO DO: STEP 1 Using a clean paintbrush, spread some water around on your paper. Keep in mind, where you place the water is where the color is going to run. You can paint water all the way to the edges, or in patterns. STEP 2 Add the color! Using your paintbrush, dampen the paint and add lots and lots of color to your paper. Go fast! If you take your time, the paint will dry. STEP 3 While the paint is still very wet, lay the leaves down in your painting. There is no right or wrong way; leaves may overlap or even go off the page. STEP 4 Once the paint is completely dried, remove the leaves to see your fall foliage masterpiece. Tips: • Use different leaves from different trees and plants.

• Regular paper will not work for this project. The water weights it down too much. • Patience is key! The leaves must stay in the watercolor till it’s completely dry in order to capture all of their details. We let ours dry overnight. • Once the leaves are placed on your paper, you can add more color between them. If a spot doesn’t look like it has enough color, add more paint! • Leaves that are slightly limp and can lay flat work best. Fresh leaves fold up and dry leaves crumble. • You cannot have too much paint! When you think you have enough on the paper, add more. Then add more again.

GET MOVING WITH THIBODAUX REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

TURNING SCREEN TIME INTO FITNESS Technology is all around us — how can that apply to our children and fitness? Using technology like handheld devices, computers, and video games doesn’t have to translate into a sedentary lifestyle. Someone in our family, if not all of us, utilizes apps in our daily lives. It can be especially overwhelming for parents to keep up with the newest apps targeting kids. How can we leverage fitness apps to help our families? Our job as parents is to model behaviors of health and wellbeing with intentions that our children will adopt a healthy lifestyle. While long work hours and crazy schedules can often derail even the best of intentions, healthy activity is a must for everyone. 1. Kids Fitness - Yoga This free yoga app features 10 poses and an animated character that guides kids through yoga poses. Each pose is illustrated and explained to make following along easier. Kids can reap the benefits of yoga by using this app. Kid’s Fitness - Yoga can be safely used alone, it’s best for adults to go through the app, helping guide their child through each pose; it’s also an excellent way for parents and children to practice yoga together. Ages: 4+ Price: Free 2. GoNoodle Kids GoNoodle Kids is an app used in schools that is designed to get kids moving. Through interactive videos, kids learn how to control energy, focus, and be positive with mindfulness. GoNoodle Kids is an app meant to introduce quick bouts of movement in the classroom, so you should be aware that the modules are short. Ages: 6+ Price: Free 3. Just Dance Now Just Dance Now players dance to music and choreography using a smartphone as a controller and an internet-connected screen, such as a computer or Smart TV. This app will get your kids dancing to over 300 songs. Coins, the in-app currency, are used to play songs and they regenerate over time. Ages: 4+ Price: Free

FAMILY FIRST

16

Alarmingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that almost 18.5 percent of children ages 2-19 are obese. That’s staggering and yet not altogether surprising, considering how sedentary many of our lifestyles have become. Extended screen time spent on devices is often equated with a sedentary lifestyle, but fitness apps combine the best of both worlds. If your kids are more interested in screens than being outside, it can be hard to get them moving, but not to worry — kids will have a lot of fun using these apps that make their screen time more active! Let’s explore a few fitness apps to get kids and families moving together.

4. Sworkit Kids - Fitness Meets Fun Sworkit Kids turns exercising into a game with customizable workouts that build strength, agility, and flexibility. The app guides users through exercises that combine interval training with randomized exercises to keep kids from getting bored. The app challenges kids with questions like “how long can you hop on one foot?” This app is great with parental supervision to ensure that exercises are completed properly, help correct improper form and prevent injury! Ages: 4+ Price: Free 5. NFL Play 60 NFL Play 60 is an augmented reality game in which players take real steps to explore in the game. Players can collect NFL players to build their roster, play catch, train, and prepare with them for competition against other teams. When a player moves, jumps, turns, and dances while holding their phone, their virtual player does the same. Parents must sign a release before their child begins playing NFL Play 60, which removes liability from the NFL and American Heart Association, should an injury occur while using the app. Ages: 4+ Price: Free

NOVEMBER 2019

6. I Am Love: Kids’ Yoga Journey This interactive yoga app is made just for kids. Kids are guided through 13 yoga poses that are demonstrated by children. Yoga can be a great way for kids to reduce stress and decompress before bed. Ages: 4+ Price: $3.99 (iOS) & $0.99 (Android) 7. Iron Kids Iron Kids is a kids’ fitness app made by the American Academy of Pediatrics. This app is great for young athletes who want to learn about healthy strength training, balance, and fitness from sports medicine physician Jordan D. Metzl, MD, FAAP. Iron Kids features custom workouts, training tips, goal setting, and reminders. Ages: 4+ Price: $2.99 The American Heart Association released research findings that prove the link between screen use and sedentary behavior is directly linked to childhood obesity. Again, the sedentary behavior, as a result of extended screen time for kids has caused childhood obesity rates to spike to almost 20 percent of the population. Now, more than ever, parents need to ensure that their children are developing active and healthy lifestyles, and the best place to start is with family fitness.

If your kids are reluctant to get moving, these apps will certainly motivate them to be active. Fitness apps are a great way to combine screen time with physical activity. The apparent answer to screen time for kids is for parents to help their children balance their digital and physical lives. With the use of parental screen time apps, for example, Zift, parents are easily able to monitor their child’s online activity, as well as to manage the apps they use and the websites they frequent.
