The approximately 535 ladies of Aquarius are celebrating their 23rd anniversary. Those 23 years are steeped in tradition, including their unique way of choosing their queen. A king cake is cut and a number is placed on each slice. Members pull a number and receive their corresponding piece of cake. The member finding a silver crown in their piece of cake is the queen. The member finding a mask in their piece is the runner-up.
Identities of the 2017 royal court, including king, queen, Mr. and Ms. Shaka and the duke and duchess, are kept confidential until the krewe’s ball on February 11. Marching bands and dance groups will join the krewe as they parade through the streets of Thibodaux.

Formed in 1954 as a way to bring the revelry of the season to the area, Krewe of Chronos is the oldest krewe of the city. The parade uses the same double decker floats that roll through the Big Easy streets and abides by the motto “every man a king”, enabling every member the same opportunity to reign over the ball and parade.
This year’s royal couple hold a very special title as Mr. Durocher is the son of last year’s Queen and Ms. Folse is the daughter of last year’s King. The krewe owns their own floats and all are ridden by families and friends. Floats choose a sub theme and utilize their own designs and creativity to decorate their floats and coordinate costumes.

The all-male krewe selected its name from the parish Terrebonne, French for “good earth”, and the group later changed its name to Terreanians. The now 400-plus member krewe is now known for its borage of specialty beads tossed during the Sunday afternoon parade.

ntering the new Wine and Spirits Department at Cannata’s is like stepping into an entirely new world. Immediately upon entering, shoppers realize that something big is happening here – an all-new adult playground with thousands of bottles of craft beer, wines and fine liquors just so happens to be in a supermarket! The store within a store offers more selections than anyone else, making it a destination for libations for any occasion. Thoughtfully organized to give shoppers an experience like no other, the Wine and Spirits Department is situated just to the left of the meat selections within the West Park Avenue location. This provides the ideal jumping off point for anyone to create an unforgettable meal. “You travel from the world of great steaks, which is just right around the corner, and naturally the next thing is choosing a nice wine or cheese,” Vince Cannata says of the department’s location, which features a soundtrack, string lights, and memorabilia from favorite sports teams which make it feel like a backyard party. “Good food and drink – it’s a way of life here on the
bayou. Having our butcher steps away from the largest liquor store in town – now that’s a dream come true. That’s what lots of folks are telling me!” Step inside the department and you’ll behold thousands of selections ready to be enjoyed whether around the dinner table or around the fire with friends. At the forefront is a dizzying array of wines, diligently organized by Wine & Spirits Specialist Lane Bates. Selections are divided by price point and by region, with some even marked with its Wine Spectator rating. This allows shoppers to travel throughout the lush vineyards of Oregon Wine Country, west to the elegant estates of California’s wine region and onward to Europe. Rice wines from Asia are nestled closely beside an array of Malbecs from Argentina, while Rosé, Champagne and sweeter sips find their place along an aisle all their own. Smaller bottles and cans, perfect for parade route pours or cooking, round out the expansive selection. “It’s not just here’s a red wine, here’s a white wine,” Vince says. “There’s a lot of research, a lot of stories…Pretty much everything you see here is for a

reason. Either Lane loves it, it’s gotten a high score, it’s something you just have to have, or it’s such a great deal, you can’t pass it up.” Venture further into the department and boxes of domestic beer, as well as hundreds of craft beer selections, await the thirsty shopper. Much of the craft beer selection comes from right here in the United States, a trend Lane says he expects to continue growing. Along with ales, India Pale Ales, and stouts from beer hubs like Michigan, Georgia and California, shoppers are sure to find a hefty selection of Louisiana-brewed beers for those who favor those pours made with local love and attention. “There’s more flavor. It’s the fact that you can try something new every day,” Lane says of craft beer. “It’s just like wine. It’s the intrigue.” The outer perimeter, recently closed in to create the perfect ambiance for shopping within the department, plays hosts to hard liquors and all the ingredients one might need to whip up

the perfect cocktail. “Mixology and making your own cocktails is really big right now so we carry everything you need for that,” Craft Beer and Cocktail Specialist Joel Ohmer says. “There’s a big movement to get back to classic cocktails. We’ve got the odd things, the craft bitters, the mixers. It’s growing in popularity. People aren’t just sipping on bourbon. They want to make the Sazaracs, the Manhattans.” Cannata’s is also providing education by not only stocking the ingredients but also hosting tastings and events monthly to encourage more people to try new things. Some events feature the Cannata’s team teaching guests how to make signature cocktails, while others feature brewmasters from popular breweries stopping by to talk more about the art of craft beer making. “There’s a lot of people who won’t try new things because craft beer is a little more expensive and there’s a lot of people who won’t spend $10 on

something they’re not sure they will like,” regular shopper and craft beer enthusiast Chris Naquin says of the store’s tastings and events. “That’s why tastings and bottle shares help out so much…You don’t know what you like unless you try stuff.” Not sure what wines you like or which ingredients you need to create a Moscow Mule? The Cannata’s experts are always on hand to help shoppers make purchases they will be happy with, a feature Vince says you won’t find anywhere else. “One of my favorite things I tell people, especially people that come into the department while we’re having a tasting and they’re looking at the bottles of wine and they’re interested, I’ll ask, ‘Would you like to try that?’ They may say, ‘I don’t know a lot about wine.’ I always respond, ‘Do you know how to work a corkscrew? Well then you know enough about wine. Come try something,’” Joel explains. “If you like it, that’s great. If you don’t, we
have something else for you. There’s something for every person whether it’s beer, wine, or hard liquor. We’ll help them find something that they enjoy.” “There’s no right or wrong,” Lane adds. “Whether it’s beer, whether it’s wine, there’s no best. It could be the highest rated wine but that doesn’t mean you’ll like it. It’s about people finding what’s best for them and fits what they want to do with it.” It’s this winning combination of high quality, diverse products and expert advice that makes the Cannata’s Wine and Spirits Department a destination like no other. “My dream is to make this a comfortable place for people to come in a town where maybe they think they have to go to New Orleans for this or that. I want them to know that there is one place that has it all,” Vince says. “Staff that loves what they do, huge offerings, and big case discounts – plenty to lift your spirits.”

he stunning display of color and creativity that is signature to the Krewe of Hyacinthians is in the hands of a myriad seamstresses, ready to take on the challenge of creating the elaborate costumes. The creation process for Krewe of Hyacinthians float captain and costume creator Angel Allemand is a year-long endeavor that involves a lot of thought. Since sewing and costume design is more of a hobby for her, she can often be seen with her pins and needles at night or during the weekend. “I was on Miss Helen’s float, and I just started helping her out with costumes and little things. When she decided to get off the float, I took her place in the captain’s spot,” Angel says of her
22 February 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide
moves within the krewe since joining in 2002. Upon joining the krewe, Angel found herself as the youngest member on her float. The difference in age led to her wanting to create costumes that could fit a younger crowd as well. “I accommodated everybody, but that’s what inspired me to do it. Hyacinthians is known for their costumes. They’re elaborate, and we go way out on our costumes.” The process begins in March when the krewe picks their theme for the following year. By June, Angel is already drawing out costumes and picking fabric, kicking off a mad dash to finish the costumes during her free time away from her gift boutique in Morgan City.
Hyacinthians is known for their costumes. They’re elaborate, and we go way out on our costumes. “I’m still sewing, and I have to be finished by February 4,” Angel says of this year’s preparations. “It really takes me all year.” “Land of Make Believe” will be the theme for the ladies of Hyacinthians this year, thus creating the parameters for the float captains and their fellow riders to choose their own theme from. “They give us some options to pick, and if you have any other ones, you can get it approved by the president. We’re Alice in Wonderland this year, and I’m making three different costumes: Alice, The Mad Hatter, and The White Rabbit,” she says of her tall task. The previous year’s Halloween also helps Angel a lot in coming up with the costumes. She’ll find herself analyzing the trendy costumes for the year, and if she likes the style, she’ll find a way to incorporate it into the float’s theme. In a bit of an odd twist, the costumes tend to dictate the theme instead of the theme dictating the costume. “If I like the way it looks, the way it fits, and I think that everyone will be comfortable in it, then I’ll go with it,” Angel says. “I already have an idea for next year because I went to the Renaissance Festival and saw some costumes that I fell in love with. So that’s what is inspiring me for next year.” Angel’s love for sewing has kept her pushing through the endless hours of costume creation. Her passion for it clearly shows as she’s even considering making it her fulltime project. “The creation of how it comes out in the end, how we look, and when I get that picture back of us at the tableau is humbling.”

LISTINGS
LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES by Jonah Giroir
T
he Valentine’s Day weekend slate of movies this year is highlighted by three very different genres. My most anticipated of those just so happens to be the animated one, “The Lego Batman Movie” (Feb. 10). Batman was arguably the best part of the impressive “The Lego Movie” from 2014, and Will Arnett returning to voice the character almost ensures that the same hilarity will be found in this one. He is joined by Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson
as Batgirl, and an intriguingly cast Zach Galifianakis as The Joker. Joining Batman on Valentine’s Day weekend are “John Wick: Chapter 2” (Feb. 10) and “Fifty Shades Darker” (Feb. 10). “John Wick: Chapter 2” is the follow-up to the 2014 standout action thriller named after the titular character. Keanu Reeves reprises his role as the former hitman, as we dig deeper into how Wick developed his skills. “Fifty Shades Darker” continues the story of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. However, their budding romance does not come without its problems as Christian must confront his inner demons and Anastasia has to deal with the anger and envy of the women that were in Christian’s life before her. Those three are obviously the big draws for the month, but there are a few more movies hitting the big screen worth mentioning. On the horror side of things, we have “Rings” (Feb. 3) and “Get Out” (Feb. 24). After originally being scheduled to release in October, “Rings” returns to the story of “The Ring”, the 2002 film about a videotape that led to the death of the viewer seven days later. This iteration seems
24 February 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide
to follow the same premise, so it should be worth a watch if you enjoyed the original. “Get Out”, directed by Jordan Peele, looks to be the more interesting of the two horror releases this month. It all starts when a young African American man (Lakeith Stanfield) visits his Caucasian girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) cursed family estate. There, things go horribly awry, and Stanfield must find a way out. I definitely suggest watching the trailer before. February also provides a few scifi/action stories that look rather intriguing. “The Space Between Us” (Feb. 3) has been described as “Romeo & Juliet” that centers on the first human born on Mars. Once Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) gets his first taste of life on Earth, he never wants to go back. He eventually falls in love with Tulsa (Britt Robertson), but his organs cannot withstand Earth’s environment. Gary Oldman lends his talents to the movie as well. Also this month, Matt Damon stars as a mercenary warrior
imprisoned within the Great Wall of China in “The Great Wall” (Feb. 17). While imprisoned, Damon discovers wave after wave of beasts attacking the massive structure as his quest for fortune takes a detour. He joins the fight to defeat this seemingly unstoppable force. On the lighter side, February also provides “Fist Fight” (Feb. 17) and “Rock Dog” (Feb. 24). R-rated comedies are usually not my thing, but “Fist Fight” actually looks like it could be a pretty fun time. Charlie Day manages to get Ice Cube fired, which then leads to an after-school fight that Day spends the rest of the school day trying to get out of. The trailers have looked pretty funny, so hopefully this one lives up to its promise. For the kiddos, “Rock Dog” follows Bodi, an aspiring musician through his journeys of becoming a rock star. Luke Wilson, J.K. Simmons, Lewis Black, and Kenan Thompson add some name recognition to the movie as well.

GIRL IN DISGUISE by Greer Macallister By Mary Cosper LeBoeuf, Terrebonne Parish Library Director
“G
irl in Disguise” is delightful, fast moving, and intriguing. It’s a quick read because you can’t wait to find out what’s Kate Warne’s next mission. Greer Macallister has written a historical fiction book on the first female detective in America. In 1856, Kate Warne is left a penniless widow seeking a way to make a decent living. After making a few attempts at what women should make a living at, Kate realizes she is not destined for domesticity. She sees an advertisement in the newspaper for Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency. Allan Pinkerton realizes that a woman may just be able to get in places and get information that men may not be able to attain. The first female detective is hired and the trials and triumphs for Kate
and Pinkerton begin. Kate is exposed to a world she has only heard about: murder, extortion, kidnapping, and espionage. She has to prove herself many times over since she works with men who think a woman’s place is at home. Pinkerton, of course, starts Kate with small and somewhat simple cases. However, the mid-1800s is a turbulent time and Pinkerton’s biggest client is the Illinois Central Railroad. A railroad that crosses the country - North, South, East, and West - is a prime target for unwanted and illegal actions. As Kate’s career progresses, Pinkerton realizes the asset she has become. Kate’s childhood was spent in the traveling theater with her parents, so donning disguises and changing her personality is second nature. However,
28 February 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide
as time moves along, she wonders who is Kate and who are her aliases. Being a detective is a lonely business, one that does not allow for family or many friends. When the nation becomes divided before and during the Civil War, Kate goes undercover to penetrate espionage. It becomes cruel and dangerous. Certainly not a place for a woman, but this may be her most important case. If Greer Macallister has captured the true Kate Warne in this novel, wow! What a woman. Despite her hesitation and fear at the beginning of her career, Kate Warne becomes an accomplished, intelligent, and shrewd detective. She has a keen sense of observation and instinct which pays off in many of her cases. Her dedication and determination to succeed shows that a woman can
do the job. “Girl in Disguise” is a fun book. It leads the reader on adventures through history and exposes plots and actions that will surprise you. I hated to see it end, since I’ve become a fan of Kate Warne. Greer Macallister has a well-written novel. I can’t wait for her next one.

THE KING OF CAKES
W
King Cake Beignets Spahr’s Seafood
e all have our favorites. Some of us favor the creaminess of a rich Bavarian cream, while others of us crave the sweet bite from a jelly-infused center. Others of us like the classic: fluffy dough dressed only by a layer of white icing and holiday appropriate sprinkles. Whichever you favor, the anticipation of king cake season hits us all and we can’t wait to sink our teeth into whatever sweet variety of the cake comes our way next. We’ve rounded up our six not-so-ordinary-but-equally-delicious selections to satisfy when you’re eager to indulge in something a little different this carnival season:
ALL LOCATIONS
Crispy fried goodness never tasted so good. Spahr’s creates perfect rounds of fried dough but skips the powdered sugar in favor of something much sweeter: king cake icing. A sprinkle of purple, green, and gold makes for a dessert you’ll be craving long after they’re gone.
Chantilly King Cake Frank’s Supermarket ALL LOCATIONS
Traditionally enveloping fruit-topped layer cakes, Frank’s Supermarket incorporates this popular sweet cream into its carnival season creations. After crafting the cakes in traditional style, dollops of decadent cream are evenly placed atop the cake, completed with a welcome burst of flavor from blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
King Cake Sundae The ChillOut
HOUMA: 808 GRAND CAILLOU ROAD; CUT OFF: 15360 W. MAIN ST.
Separately, sundaes and cheesecake are delicious. Mash the two together and you are in for a treat you must see to believe. The ChillOut whips up a tasty specialty ice cream sundae, tops it with a generous dollop of whipped cream, and dusts it all with purple, green and gold sprinkles. But they don’t stop there. For an extra 50 cents, The ChillOut will wedge a generous slice of king cake into the top, making this a dessert of epic proportion.
King Cake Cheesecake Alumni Grill
THIBODAUX: 1130 HIGHWAY 1; HOUMA: 1400 W. TUNNEL BLVD.
So you’re craving cheesecake. Alumni Grill does it well with a recipe that makes for a rich, whipped delight. But it wouldn’t be Mardi Gras without a festive flair and Alumni Grill is pulling out all the stops, creating a purple, green, and gold layered masterpiece nestled atop a crust that the restaurant has magically figured out how to infuse with the carnival season flavors of traditional king cake.
King Cake Bread Pudding Weeping Willow Café 704 W. 3RD ST., THIBODAUX
This traditional south Louisiana treat gets a surprising and tasty upgrade thanks to the bakers behind Weeping Willow Café. All the essential ingredients are combined for that signature flavor with the added taste of decadent icing and carnival season sprinkles.
