tep back in time to an era where music was king, nightclubs were the place to be and swing made its mark on the music scene. The show, set in “The Sugarcane Club,” is a tribute to African American musicans of the 1920s and 1930s and features a host of musical numbers sure to have you groovin’ in your seats. The show opens with a rendition of the play’s moniker, a quintessential swing number penned by Fats Weller. Journey through the Harlem Renaissance with five musicians as they lament finding true love and celebrate life’s victories through songs you’re sure to be singing long after you leave the theater.

esus Christ Superstar has been a passion project for Lorna Gianelloni for quite a while now, so when all the pieces fell into place, she jumped at the opportunity to produce it. “You have to have such credentials to professionally produce Jesus Christ Superstar. I didn’t think that I had the credentials, and I never thought I would get selected and approved,” Lorna says. “It’s kind of been on my bucket list as a producer, and it’s a show that hasn’t been performed in our area in some time.” With her cast and crew of about 30 people, Lorna was faced with some young members that have not heard any of the soundtrack, a reality that made her sad yet eager to share it with this new generation. “A lot of the young people who did audition were not familiar with the music, and that kind of broke my heart,” she says. “But the talent is quite remarkable in the show, as most of the talent is in our area.” To spice it up a little, Lorna is looking forward to switching things up a bit in the show. “I’m doing it very traditionally, except for two big production numbers that I’d rather to remain silent about because they’re pretty awesome,” Lorna says. The cast and crew have been at it for two months as they work to perfect the lyrics and music for their audience. When the curtain goes up on that opening night, Lorna says, all the hard work is sure to impress and amaze. “The lyrics and the music will just set you on fire. The storyline, at Easter, is so inspirational and heartfelt, and the talent projects all of this. It’s just amazing, and I think the people will be blown away,” she says. “We could not have done it without support from Synergy Bank, Stephanie Hebert Insurance, and John Morgan with Raymond James at The Galleria. Everything has been falling into place, one thing after the other. There’s been no real challenge or conflict, it’s just all falling into place. The only one we have is that we have so many people interested in the show we have to do a lot of shows, and that’s not a bad problem.” MARCH 30 – APRIL 1, 7 P.M.; APRIL 2, 1 P.M.; APRIL 9, 1 P.M. egendary songstress Carole King truly lived a teenage dream: at 17, she scored her first no. 1 hit with “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and married her song writing partner, Gerry Goffin that same year. Over the next nearly 10 years, the duo penned some of the most recognizable songs in the American songbook, tunes that contributed to Carole’s unparalleled rise to stardom. “Beautiful: A Carole King Musical”, which debuted on Broadway in 2014 and has since made its way to London’s West End and now throughout the United States, tells the inspiring story of the Manhattan-born singer-songwriter and the trials and tribulations she faced on her way to the top of the charts. Since its debut, the production has earned six Drama Desk Award nominations, seven Tony Award nominations and walked away with the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, a testament to the shining talents that lie within the cast. One of those undeniable talents is Ben Fankhauser, who cut his teeth in the theatre world as Ernest in the first national tour of “Spring Awakening” and as part of the original cast of Disney’s “Newsies”. Ben takes on the embodiment of Barry Mann, a composer who Carole, Gerry, and fellow songwriter Cynthia Weil bump into at 1650 Broadway, the Big Apple music industry offices that set the backdrop for this telling of Carole’s story. Barry and Cynthia, who are still married today, fall deeply in love throughout the course of the show, establishing the parallel to Carole’s journey. “It’s a great role in the show because the songwriting duo play a counterpart to Carole King and her songwriting partner and husband, Gerry Goffin,” Ben says of the role. “What’s great about the story is that Carole and her husband, we sort of see them fall apart. They fall in love at a very young age and they write these prolific hit songs. They sort of go through a really rocky marriage and the counterpart of the story, which is Barry and Cynthia, come together throughout the story. We see Barry chasing Cynthia. He wants to commit to marriage and she’s not ready yet. All the while, they’re in the office working on their music. It’s a lot of fun. I think the two couples comple-
ment each other really well. Barry and Cynthia are more of the love story which juxtaposes Carole and Gerry’s tumultuous marriage and dark relationship.” The hardships, celebrations and pivotal moments are beautifully framed by those very songs woven into the love and heartbreak. “Up on the Roof”, made famous by The Drifters, speaks of positivity in the face of the storm, while the dynamic song about finding joy from within that gives the production its name ties the production up with a metaphorical bow. Sprinkled throughout, audiences are also treated to a host of other songs, some of which many may not have realized were part of the group’s contributions to music history. “The show is awesome because it is full of iconic songs. The catalog is kind of unbelievable. You hear songs like “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”, “Up on the Roof”, “The Locomotion”, which Carole King wrote. A lot of people don’t know that she wrote that one. The amount of iconic songs that you hear in this evening of theatre is kind of mind blowing. What’s even cooler is that it is a true story. You’re watching an interesting true story but at the same time you have your own nostalgic memories of these songs. People are watching the story, but they are also thinking about where they were, who they were with, what they were doing when they heard these songs for the first time. There’s this sort of invisible projection of your own nostalgia onto the stage so it actually gives it another dimension. It’s a really neat experience. It’s not your typical jukebox musical, toe-tapping experience. It really draws people in.” Though he admits being part of a long running show is a challenge, it’s one artists live for. Ben says being able to share legendary songs while embodying such a pivotal character is quite simply a blessing. “I love playing Barry because he is a songwriter, he is an artist. I also am an artist. It’s easy to access the part of myself that gets frustrated when I don’t feel like I’m doing a good enough job or that feels like I have to self-motivate when my work isn’t good enough. It’s great getting to play a songwriter for that.”

he Harlem Globetrotters will bring their alley-oops, 4-point shots, and fun for the whole family to the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center on March 3. The world famous basketball team is known for its theatrics and feats of athletic ability throughout their games and this show will not disappoint. For Slick Willie Shaw, 6’6” forward, basketball has always been a part of his life, and the need to be active helped him find a home with the Harlem Globetrotters. “I was that type of kid that was never able to sit down, and now I have a job where I can travel around the world, entertain people, just do what I love to do,” he says. “I fell in love with the game of basketball at the age of 6 years old.” His love of the game took him to St. John’s University in New York where he started for four years and found himself in second on the school’s career list for made three-pointers. And while those three-pointers have led to great results with the Globetrotters’ 4-point shot, introduced in 2010, Slick has a few other tricks up his sleeve come game time. “I love to shoot a trick shot from the stands. Also, I’m the Spin Doctor - I can spin two basketballs at the same time. I can also spin a ball around my back, under my legs, and back up around my back, so my teammates call me the Spin Doctor,” he says of one of his nicknames. “They call me Slick because I can do some slick things with the basketball, also because I can slip by my defender in tight situations on the court.” Providing inspiration and good memories for the whole family plays a big part in the reasoning behind why Slick and his fellow Globetrotters continue their efforts day after day. “I get a chance to go out there and maybe inspire a young boy or girl, and I’m creating positive memories for families. And I’m doing what I love to do, so it’s not really hard for me to get pumped up. I love to play basketball, I love inspiring, and I just love to entertain people, and with the Globetrotters I have the stage every night to do that,” Slick explains. Slick’s time with the Globetrotters has also given him a chance to continue playing the game he’s loved since childhood while also traveling the world. “I started playing for the Globetrotters 12 years ago,” he says. “Here I am 12 years later. I’ve been to 79 countries, every state in the United States, just living the dream… The reason I tell people to come out to see the world famous Harlem Globetrotters is that you’ll get a chance to see some great athletes, some great dribbling, some high-flying basketball,” Slick says. “It’s a great environment where you’ll have wholesome family fun. The game lasts four quarters, but the memories last a lifetime.”.

JAMBALAYA WRITERS’ CONFERENCE
Learn more from Rachel Caine and a host of other writers during this year’s Jambalaya Writers’ Conference, set for March 4 at the Terrebonne Parish Main Library. R
oxanne Conrad’s pseudonyms are as diverse as her career: She was Julie Fortune when she published an original novel for TV series, Stargate SG-1, and penned a number of thrillers under the name Roanne Longstreet and Conrad. However, most of her loyal fans know her as Rachel Caine, the lady behind wildly popular YA series, “Morganville Vampires”. Growing up in West Texas, Rachel’s nose was most often buried within a tome plucked from the Bookmobile, a place that became a sanctuary for the New York Times bestselling author. Dabbling in both the music and corporate world for many years, it was in 2011 she realized her after-hours writing was beginning to take precedence over her day job and finally she made the switch. To date, Rachel has written an impressive 50 novels, encompassed in a handful of independent works, nine series, and numerous short stories. Among her most recognizable is the aforementioned Morganville Vampires, a series documenting life inside Morganville, Texas, a small college town…run completely by vampires. The books were also translated to a web series thanks to Kickstarter funding. These days, it’s Rachel’s The Great Library series that’s getting tons of attention. Launched in 2015 with “Ink and Bone”, a novel that was named to the Lone Star Reading List for 2016 by the Texas Library Association, the series considers if the Library of Alexandria had never burned and its consequences. “We think of libraries as an altruistic exercise, but in fact, in the ancient world, they were symbols of power – political power,” she says of the series, with its third book, “Ash and Quill”, set for a July release. “When you put that bent on it, you get an entirely different kind of story. In my world, the Great Library controls knowledge.” Though Rachel’s stories tend to step far beyond real life, the writer says it’s not all that hard to get into the mindframe of someone living in a time far different from her own. Having grown up in a household where science fiction and fantasy were heavily read, she says the exposure influences her blend of genres while also considering emotions and situations experienced by the reader. “Whether your books are paranormal or contemporary life,
what you’re doing is noticing things around you. Writers are great observers,” Rachel says. “Your brain doesn’t work the way other peoples’ brains work. You take that concept and you spin off of it into some new place. For me, naturally, that takes on a little bit of a paranormal bent, although I have done a few things that are not. It’s really just looking at things that are occurring and taking them two or three steps farther.” Having worked as a professional musician at one point in her life, it is understandable that music is an integral part of Rachel’s writing process, which often encompasses seven or eight hours of her day. She crafts playlists reflective of the book she is currently writing, allowing her to get into the proper mindset while also exposing herself to new music. “I listen to music a lot. I make playlists for every book because that helps me stay focused. It’s so different from book to book because I’m a big fan of discovering new music. For my thriller, I have songs that nobody’s ever heard of like Black Honey, Thrice, ‘Cellophane’ by Sara Jackson-Holman, ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ by Five Finger Death Punch. I have a very different playlist for every book. Some of them may be a bit more Appalachian feel, some of them are very modern. The Morganville Vampires soundtracks were always hugely fun because they were just super adrenaline and very poppy and enjoyable to listen to.” As Rachel prepares to make her appearance at the Jambalaya Writers’ Conference, she is taking a moment to reflect on her own career and consider what she wants to share most with those aspiring for a career as successful as her. Just as her music and pseudonyms reflect the diverse interests of the author, Rachel says diversification is also essential to blazing a trail in the world of literature. “I was always told when I was coming up, ‘You need to figure out what your brand is and stay within your brand.’ My discovery has been that as a writer, you are your brand. You can go where you want to go as long as you are doing excellent work. It’s important, I think, to keep your brand diversified. Just like any other company, diversification helps you stay afloat when things go up and down.”

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES BY JONAH GIROIR
PHOTOS VIA ROTTEN TOMATOES
M
arch is surprisingly one of the months that I’m looking forward to most for movies. Usually, studios wait for the summer months to release blockbusters, but there are a few heavy hitters gracing the big screen this month, and it all starts off with Logan (March 3). The movie follows Logan, better known as Wolverine, as he drinks his days away in a hideout until he’s approached with an urgent mission. The claws come out again as Hugh Jackman portrays the character for what is potentially the last time. The Shack (March 3) also hits theaters to kick off a crowded month.
After the abduction and assumed death of his youngest daughter, Missy, Mackenzie Allen Phillips (Sam Worthington) receives a letter and suspects that it’s God asking him to return to The Shack where Missy may have been murdered. After mulling it over, Mack returns and encounters something that changes his life forever. With a soundtrack filled with Christian artists, the movie is sure to tug at your heartstrings and deliver a faith-based message to get you thinking. The following week, we are treated to Kong: Skull Island (March 10) by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.
18 March 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide
Star-studded with Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly, this movie is sure to be action packed as we venture into the home of the king of the apes. We could also see the setup for the potential Kong versus Godzilla movie that’s been rumored to occur since “Kong: Skull Island” was announced. Disney joins the festivities by revealing their latest film, Beauty and the Beast (March 17). I would attempt to list the stars in this one, but that would take up more pages than I’m allowed. Anyway, we are all familiar with this tale as old as time, but this time we are gifted with a live-action rendition that appears to carry the same charm of the original. Considering the animated classic is my
favorite Disney movie, I’m more than ready to see this one. Power Rangers (March 24) also premieres this month. Now Power Rangers was probably my favorite TV show as a child, so it’s safe to say that I’m pretty excited to revisit Angel Grove. The trailers have not disappointed me so far and the suits look pretty awesome. Hopefully this does really well so we can get more Power Rangers movies in the future. Finally, Boss Baby (March 31) should provide some laughs for the family. Alec Baldwin provides the voice for a baby that’s feeling the attention for babies is dwindling because of puppies. He tries to ignite a master plan with his reluctant seven-year-old brother to put babies back at the forefront.

THE ALL-GIRL FILLING STATION’S LAST REUNION By Fannie Flagg By Charlotte Gaubert, Lafourche Parish Library System Area Librarian
S
ookie Poole had just married off her third daughter, in two years’ time, and was giddy with relief. Life was getting back to normal or as normal as life could be. Sookie belongs to the Sandwich Generation where she has to share her life between caring for her aged mother and her adult, needy children. Making matters worse is that her mother, Lenore Simmons Krackenberry, who lives next door, is a pillar of Point Clear society, and is constantly getting into escapades that Sookie and Earle, Sookie’s husband, have to rescue her from. Out of the blue arrives a letter and
documentation that proves that Sookie was adopted and her life changes forever. Not only is she not a Simmons Krackenberry of Point Clear, Alabama, but she is a Polish-Catholic and her birth mother was a WASP, Women Air Force Service Pilots during World War II. Sookie’s life now includes clandestine appointments with a young psychiatrist, studying about the Polish culture in Pulaski, Wisconsin, and locating information about her birth mother and the Women Air Force Service Pilots of the Second World War. As Sookie evolves into the woman that she always wanted to be, she

realizes that her life as Lenore’s daughter was not a complete waste. Urged on by her own curiosity, she discovers that it is her adopted parents who molded her into the person she has become. Fannie Flagg does it again! Fannie makes everyday life unbelievably interesting with her heartfelt humor. She will have you laughing out loud on one page and reaching for a tissue on the next. She adds the kind of life to her characters where you would like to be their next door neighbor. This book will appeal to those who enjoy humorous and historical fiction.
