special population of Louisiana natives have been toiling away for many years – learning, uncovering, preserving the rich musical history unique to the Pelican State. Many of the original masters of the craft have since passed on, making it a particularly challenging task to tie up the loose ends of the story, but they press on in the name of lineage. For Baton Rouge-born musician David Greely, that lineage is his own bloodline. His mother a Theriot, David knew from an early age the nuances of his Cajun heritage (His grandfather was also a fiddle player), but as any kid growing up in the sixties and seventies, he gravitated toward the raucous and infectious sounds of more mainstream artists. “It means a lot to me to be part of (the movement to preserve Cajun music) because when I was growing up, I was like all of the other kids my age listening to The Beatles and the Rolling Stones,” he explains. “Then I discovered the fiddle and I wasn’t hearing any fiddle in that music. I discovered older music that really excited me more than anything I’d ever heard. Because of this particular obsession of mine, I got to be a part of that world. I got to make friends with the old Cajun masters like Dewy Balfa and I got to play with Dennis McGee and all these people we revere nowadays. I knew those people and they liked the way I played, which meant a lot to me. Coming from having almost lost the culture, I got to be right in the heart of it.” And right in the heart of it he was. He immersed himself headfirst in the genre through an apprenticeship with Cajun fiddle master Dewey Balfa, who set the standard for Cajun music as we know it. He also spent 23 years as a founding member of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. Established in the late 1980s by David and Steve, the band went on to garner a slew of accolades as well as cement their place as international ambassadors of Louisiana culture. “I was lucky enough to study under Dewey Balfa, who taught me how to listen, which enabled me to play the music in a really convincing way so it sounded like Cajun fiddle and not just some kid showing off. Also, after being in Mamou Playboys for 23 years, when I left, I wanted more than anything to play by myself

so that I could explore a style of Cajun music I call home music. It’s music that was played in the home, not for public entertainment or for dance hall ruckus. It has a broader spectrum of emotions. It has minor keys, which you never hear in dance halls. It just seemed like a broader palate of music for me to work with. If I work alone, I figured out a way to play a fiddle by myself that sounds more complete…It’s much deeper than what you get to hear in a dance hall.” Although he now plays as a solo act, with eyes closed, you’d swear a duo or trio has taken the stage. David has crafted a unique style that often sounds like that of a group of fiddles playing in chorus, while also weaving in Cajun French lyrics for good measure. “French had been uninterrupted in my family until my parents’ generation,” he explains. “The Theriot side, I really wanted to be a part of that lineage and be able to speak French – Cajun French, not standard French. I wanted Louisiana French. The other reason (I gravitated toward this genre) is because I loved this music more than any other I tried to play. It’s just well suited for me. It’s more about expression than competition.” When he’s not touring, David has also taken up the role of adjunct instructor of Cajun fiddle at the University of LouisianaLafayette, an opportunity the musician says has given him a chance to learn more about his craft and share it with the next generation. “I love to teach. It helps me learn a lot. When I explain to people what to do and why, it kind of explains it to me. It makes the music more rooted in my heart and soul and makes me better at what I do.” Love, passion, heritage – strung together, these words form the basis of David’s continued effort to not only carry on his family’s history, but the history of the region. For him, that opportunity is priceless. “One of the things I do is I tell stories while I present music. I like to tell stories about the people I learned it from or I kind of give an outline of the history of the music as it came to us through the centuries. It’s really different now than it was when we left France and I can illustrate that as I go and kind of explain how all that happened. It’s just one big, beautiful story.”

BREAKING & ENTERING

I

f you’re looking for a fun night filled with over-the-top comedy, Le Petit Theatre de Terrebonne has just what you’re searching for with Colin Mitchell’s production, “Breaking & Entering”. Directed by Edwina Yakupzack and produced by Martha Cazaubon, this four-person play will steal your heart with a generous mix of larceny, love and laughter. Everything kicks off when a charming con man (Steve Crispino) breaks into what he thinks is an empty apartment, but is greeted by a mysterious woman (Celeste Roberts) waiting for him. The man begins concocting outlandish stories, but the woman always appears to be two steps ahead of him, leaving the audience to question who is the better con artist. And just when things are starting to make sense, another stranger (George Beaudry) enters the apartment with a remote control, heart-dotted boxer shorts, and the same name as the mysterious woman. Everything breaks down into a fun and gut-busting series of events as a lovestruck neighbor (Pat Crochet) rounds out the cast. “It has really cute dialogue and the characters are really well-drawn,” the director says. “It’s a really cute play.” In addition to the nefarious antics of everyone involved, Edwina adds that “keep your doors locked” should be taken as an underlying message for the audience to take with them as they go home. “It’s a comedy much in the same vein as the screwball comedies that were popular in the ‘30s and ‘40s in the movies. It’s a good time,” Edwina says of the play’s nature. “We have clever actors doing a clever play.”

THE CAST AND CREW OF “BREAKING & ENTERING” WILL TAKE THE STAGE AT LE PETIT THEATRE DE TERREBONNE ON MAY 12 – MAY 21. TICKETS CAN BE FOUND AT HOUMALITTLETHEATRE.COM

F

amilies are invited to discover this age old story that brings audiences through the circle of life through the eyes of Simba. Presented by the South Louisiana Center for the Arts, Disney’s “The Lion King KIDS” is a one-of-akind musical based on the famous 1994 animated feature. Be amazed as the African savannah comes to life on the stage with fan favorites like Simba, Rafiki, and the rest of an unforgettable cast journeying from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again in this coming-of-age tale. After struggling with accepting the responsibilities of adulthood and his destiny as king, Simba must return to claim his rightful place on the throne and save his beloved Pridelands. This all culminates with an epic battle against his wicked Uncle Scar. “It’s a kid version of the show. I tried to do the costuming as easy as I could for this version of the show. The Broadway production is huge and elaborate, so it’s pretty hard to copy that, but our costumes are inspired by that,” Director Dillon Hughes says. Taking on the larger-than-life characters are Caroline LeRay, Sophie Badeaux, Jazlyn Griffin, Juliette Trahan, Monique LaSalle, Sofia Kiyanfar, Lauren Lirette, Alayna Pullaro, Tess Hoychick, Victoria Simon, Elle Johnson, Chloe Hoychick, Isabella Conner, Ava Blanchard, Blair Bourg, Ellen LeRay, Elise Babin, Shelbelyn Outhouse, Dorothy Flood, Neal Grace Berry, Cara Berry, Savanna Turner, Julia Prejean, Alexis Williams, Cade Richard, and Presley Nettleton. “These kids have been working hard for months,” Dillion says. “They are extremely talented. It’s pretty much an allgirl class, so it’s pretty cool to see all the girls playing the male roles too.”

PERFORMANCES OF DISNEY’S “THE LION KING KIDS” ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE BAYOU BLACK GYM ON MAY 5 AND 6 AT 7 P.M. AND ON MAY 7 AT 2 P.M. TICKETS ARE $6 AND CAN PURCHASED IN ADVANCE AT WWW.SOLACENTER.ORG OR AT THE DOOR.

FINDING

NEVERLAND BY MELISSA DUET PHOTOS BY CAROL ROSEGG & JEREMY DANIEL

L

ong before the precocious and lovable boy Peter Pan flew into the lives of classic literature lovers and Disney fanatics, the adventures of the young boy were just a figment in the imagination of Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie. In the beginning, Peter was a minor character in one of Barrie’s early novels. Soon, however, Peter took his rightful place as the centerpiece of one of the most beloved comingof-age tales of all time. “Finding Neverland” takes appreciators of the Lost Boys and the fairies, pirates and more that dot their enchanted Neverland back to the beginning to meet the real-life Peter for the first time. Created in 2012 by Composer/Lyricists Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy and writer James Graham, debuting on Broadway in 2015 and launching a U.S. tour in 2016, this show treats audiences to a peek at what- and who inspired J.M. Barrie’s final work of art. Christine Dwyer, who takes on the role of the female lead Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, found her way to Neverland by fate one might say. Christine never pictured herself in the role, but as time would have it, the role was meant to be. I actually didn’t think it was a part I could play. I loved the movie and the role but I am so vastly different from (original cast member) Laura Michelle Kelly that it was never really on my radar of things I was thinking of playing. It wasn’t until I got called in and worked with (director Diane Paulus) that I realized I was different, but also right for it. Diane is really great about seeing different types of people and working with what you bring to the table, so I am super grateful for that,” Christine, who has taken on parts like Elphaba in “Wicked” on Broadway and Maureen in “Rent” previously, explains of the part.

10 May 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

“...to find that childlike enthusiasm again is so important to remember no matter what you do for a living” The enchanting production puts J.M. Barrie at the center of the tale, allowing audiences to follow a down and out writer as he searches for his next big idea. He finds it when he happens to meet the beautiful widow Sylvia and her four young sons Jack, George, Michael and Peter. Delighted by the boys’ highjinks, Barrie pens the play that would introduce Neverland to the world and eventually bring to high-brow London a type of show never before experienced. “I think after playing such a giant role like Elphaba, people tend to trust you with those complex roles,” Christine adds of her character. “If you can take her on and be on stage and tell a story for three hours straight, directors and producers and casting directors

are more likely to bring you in for the complex characters. So I owe a lot to having been a part of that company. I prepare the same way for every character really. I read more about this one because she is based on a real person. So I researched her life which is something I’ve never had the chance to do with any other character that I’ve played.” The storyline is further enhanced by an original score with songs audiences are sure to be singing long after the final curtain. Add in brilliant choreography from Emmy winner and “So You Think You Can Dance” vet Mia Michaels and the themes of love, hope and never giving up ring true for generations young and old. I have taken a lot away from watching the kids. Adults tend to forget that we can actually still enjoy and create and explore even as we get older and settle into a routine,” Christine says.

“There are still discoveries to be made and it’s never too late to change your life and follow your heart. I think being around the kids in this show has helped me tremendously as an actor, remembering that while this is my job, it’s also what I love and what I wanted. And even though sometimes it’s hard, I am incredibly lucky to get to do it. And there’s always something more to learn about yourself and about others. You can always broaden your views. The message of this show to find that childlike enthusiasm again is so important to remember no matter what you do for a living. And I think it’s such a beautiful thing to leave the audience with at the end.”

BY JONAH GIROIR PHOTO COURTESY OF DANE MAGEE

F

rom the minds of Dane “Daneism” Magee and Jo “Artist Mercenary” Turner comes “The Traitor of Emrys” comic book series, an idea two years in the making, with the first page drawn in March of last year. Throughout that time, ideas have been tossed around and the world of central characters Edana and Finleigh has been built around them. Filled with elves, druids, and tons of adventures, this world and the

underlying premise promise to be thrilling to follow throughout the rest of the series’ development. Dane grew up in Houma before his father’s job took their family to North Carolina when Dane was just entering high school age. His time in Louisiana was spent cultivating his imagination as he watched TV shows like Dragon Ball Z, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing while also diving into the Harry Potter series of books and movies. Once Dane got to North Carolina, he met Jo and the beginnings of “The Traitor of Emrys” started to fall into place. “Finishing The Witcher 3 and hearing about a contest from Stan Lee sparked

the concept,” he says of the comic’s inspiration. “We both went to school for art, and we really wanted to tell a highfantasy story that wasn’t grim, wasn’t another Lord of the Rings rip-off, and had a very diverse cast.” The cast’s diversity can be seen in the opening pages of the first issue as readers meet Cian NicDrust, a new high druid, and the traitor, an elven being that appears to have a French dialect. In the opening pages, the story is set as the traitor and Cian battle and exchange just enough words to give readers the background between the druids (the humans) and elves, as well as some context as to why Emrys is in danger of falling. After their battle reaches its climax, readers are transported to the “presentday” portion of the comic where they meet sixteen-year-old druidin-training and main character Edana of Emrys as she learns of her fate from Drust of Morgan, an old high druid. Edana’s maiden Finleigh also makes an appearance and figures to play a large role in the upcoming adventures in this world. With

Cian’s sword and the fate of their land’s peace resting on her shoulders, Edana takes off with Finleigh to complete her druid training and do right by their race to close out the first issue of “The Traitor of Emrys.” While the first book leaves readers with a bit of a cliffhanger, Dane and Jo promise much more excitement coming soon.

“This year, it will mostly be Edana running around kicking butt while establishing our lore,” Dane, who pens all of the text for the comic, says. “Lots of fairies, as in Celtic monsters. But always a fun and hopeful undertone set in a world full of lore and mystery.”

what wide releases “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” “Snatched,” and “Lowriders” (May 12) will try to do. “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” has a star-studded cast with Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Elizabeth Olsen, and Jude Law all contributing to the film. The story follows the legendary King Arthur as a he pulls the sword from the stone and changes his misfortuned life into the legacy we’ve all come to know. “Snatched” is an Amy Schumer comedy that leads viewers through an unpredictable and outrageously wild mother-daughter adventure as Schumer’s character lets loose following a breakup. This is sure to be a wild ride akin to the rest of the comedian’s catalogue. Finally for this weekend, “Lowriders” is a drama set in East LA that features a young graffiti artist using his talents to help his family’s legacy of prize-winning classic cars. However, the young artist is

T

he summer blockbuster season seems to be creeping into the earlier months of the year with big releases such as 2016’s “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast” coming out in March and 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” releasing in April. However, May has traditionally been the kickoff for the summer season in Hollywood, and this year is no different. The month begins with “Guardians

of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (May 5), the sequel to my favorite movie from 2014. The first Guardians movie had it all with its hilarious lead characters, fast pace, and perfect soundtrack that basically became a character in its own right. Hits like The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,” and Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” added an unexpected flavor to this movie that caused me to fall in love with these characters I knew almost nothing about. Now, Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot are quite possibly my favorite characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I cannot wait to see where their story goes. Plus, you can’t get enough of Baby Groot’s antics and overall cuteness. So, strap in and get ready for another wild ride filled with some rockin’ tunes. It will be difficult for any movie to compete with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” at the box office in the following weeks, but that is precisely

faced with competing against his older brother or helping him out and risking being pulled into the gang way of life. The month’s third weekend has a little bit of everything for everyone in the family as it consists of, teen drama “Everything, Everything,” sci-fi horror “Alien: Covenant,” and kid’s movie “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” (May 19). The biggest release of the three will probably be “Alien: Covenant,” a prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic “Alien” and sequel to 2013’s “Prometheus.” The movie’s

trailer is filled with intense action and suspense that is sure to make it a mustsee film. “Everything, Everything” follows Maddy, a teen with severe combined immunodeficiency, a rare disease that causes her to be allergic to practically everything. Her life is spent hiding at home until a boy named Olly moves in next door and a budding romance begins. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” is the next entry in the popular kid’s franchise. Main character Greg Heffley’s newest scheme causes a family road trip to Meemaw’s 90th birthday party to go off course in this family comedy. The month closes out with two big releases that will take you to the beaches for Memorial Day Weekend. “Baywatch” (May 25) follows Zack Efron and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as they unite to save their beach from

potential nefarious activities in the area. Look for a “21 Jump Street” type tone as this movie aims to pay tribute to the popular TV show but provide a strong R rated comedy for the summer season. Alexandra Daddario and an appearance from original Baywatch alum Pamela Anderson round out the cast. Last but not least, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (May 26) hits the big screen as the fifth installment in Disney’s franchise based off the popular theme park ride. Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, and Orlando Bloom return as their famous characters to face off against Captain Salazar portrayed by Javier Bardem. Their only hope for survival is the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that grants total control over the seas.

THE ADVENTURES OF BEEKLE: THE UNIMAGINARY FRIEND BY DAN SANTAT REVIEW BY KATINA GAUDET, LAFOURHE PARISH PUBLIC LIBRARY AREA LIBRARIAN

H

ave you ever been passed over in gym class when teams were being picked? That’s Beekle’s day on a routine basis. Born on an island far away, Beekle is an imaginary friend… or he would be if someone would just imagine him. On his island where imaginary friends are created, Beekle and others like him “lived and played, each eagerly waiting to be imagined by a real child.” Tired of waiting, Beekle – who’s yet to receive that special name from a special child – embarks on a sea voyage to the real world, a strange place, to find his friend. Will he…and will the world seem less strange if does? Author and illustrator Dan Santat took home a Caldecott Medal for “The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend”, an honor that is bestowed annually for the most distinguished American picture book for children. The book contains vibrant artwork – how could you not be creative when you’re imagining a world of imagined creatures as varied as the children who ultimately select them? Beekle’s island, shown in colorful hues that excite the imagination, are meant to contrast the dull black, gray, and white cityscapes he encounters on his journey to find his special child friend. In all, “The Adventures of Beekle” is a heart-warming story about friendship that younger children will find appealing, whether they have their own imaginary friend or not.
