very show deserves its swan song and for the last two years, the cast of the North American tour of Mamma Mia! has been putting their hearts and souls into making the farewell production of the legendary musical a lasting memory for theater lovers. Andrew Tebo has had the luxury of traveling with the tour for the last three years and though the end is near, the party is far from over. “I basically hit the road,” Andrew, who has spent much of his career performing with national tours like “The Fantasticks” and “A Christmas Carol,” says of his journey following college graduation. “I’ve been traveling, I would say, maybe for a decade now around the country, whether it be regional theaters as well as other national tours… I’m based in New York and I went to an open call for Mamma Mia! and was fast tracked through the callbacks. Basically, if you audition for musicals, it’s like a big interview process in the fact that you’re basically
showing them what you can do and then they hand you a bunch of material and see what you can do with that material. I was kind of fast tracked through because they actually needed an immediate replacement out on the road. So within three days of basically auditioning for the production, I was in Seattle and had started rehearsing with the company on the road…It was the most magical experience I’ve probably ever had as an actor and it continues to be an extremely amazing experience because this show is so much fun to do.” In the farewell tour of Mamma Mia!, Andrew takes on the role of Harry, one of three gentlemen who travel to a Greek island on the eve of a wedding, all potential fathers of the bride-tobe. What unfolds is the timeless tale of love, laughter, and friendship, all backed by an incredible soundtrack. “Something that’s so special about Mamma Mia! is that no matter what type of audience member you are, the whole family can come to this show and
relate with somebody within the story. You have these amazing characters from the funny best friend to these gentlemen who come unsuspectingly, not knowing that they have a daughter, to the coming of age story of Sophie,” Andrew explains of the role. “Harry, I think, has the most arc in the story. He is this staunchy little English banker who used to be called Harry Headbanger and he’s come back to the island to relive his glory days. It’s kind of that summer that everybody remembers when you were just a kid or when you were just living it up in college. Whatever it is, I think it is so relatable to that magical, one time event in your life where you were just so free and life was easy and beautiful. Now you’re living the 9-5 type of job and you’re successful and you’re happy, but it’s like that moment in life that was so special to you. I get to go back to that every night in Mamma Mia!” ABBA’s now-iconic songs like “Dancing Queen” are just as much stars
as those who take the stage night after night, and for Andrew, being able to bring the energy the show and the band have long been known for to audiences is truly a dream. Though Mamma Mia!’s time on the stage is coming to an end soon, he promises a show that is most certainly going to go out with a bang. “They spared no expense this year,” he says. “The costumes, the set, the talent that is in this show. I’ve been with the show for three years and every year it’s different because there’s new actors so there’s a different feel every time we remount the show. I have to say, this group is just spectacular. The energy is through the roof every night…It is just an amazing production and I feel honored to be a part of it. When we close this show July 30 in St. Louis, Missouri, you’re going to feel it around the United States.”

ake a peek into the lives of people in developing countries as Compassion International’s “The Compassion Experience” makes a stop in Gray June 9-11. This free event features an interactive journey through the true stories of children living in developing countries on less than $2 per day. In more than 2,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, visitors are invited inside the homes, markets, and schools these children experience without ever stepping foot on a plane. Compassion International has been a child sponsorship organization for the past 60 years, devoted to helping children of all faiths, cultures, backgrounds and race, and offering programs to those in extreme poverty and to the children in greatest need. Created a little over five years ago, “The Compassion Experience” was developed as a way to give people a realistic glimpse of why Compassion International’s work is so vital. “The idea behind it is how can we bring the developing world, how can we bring the places where good work is happening with children in poverty, how can we bring that to an American audience and show them what these environments are like,” says Compassion International’s Steve Spriggs. Each story within “The Compassion Experience” comes from a former Compassion-sponsored child who is now grown and out of the cycle of poverty. “You’ll see how they grew up and what the stakes were when they were very, very young and some of the hurdles that they had to jump over in life just to make it,” Steve explains. “At the end, it’s the depths of poverty, but also the possibility of hope when good people take action, so you see both sides of that coin.” The organization is able to bring these experiences to visitors by means of a truck that expands into an exhibit space. “A visitor will come, and we will loan them an iPod and a headset, and they will go through and the stories are narrated by the character. So you walk through chapters of their life inside the trucks and you wander from room

to room as the story is told to you through the headset,” Steve says of the immersive experience. “It’s hard to tell an entire life’s story in five chapters, which is what we have, in a short period of time, but you get an idea. You get to go in and see the environments where life happened for them. You get to see replicas of their homes, their schools, and markets where they would have shopped, and then the narration tells you what was going on at those times in their lives and some of the things that were difficult for them during those times.” It is the goal of Compassion International, through this experience, to share the stories of those in need with others and advocate on behalf of children that are living in some of the toughest places to live on earth. It is through this work that the organization hopes people will realize just how much compassion is needed in today’s world. “Telling those stories is very important to us,” Steve explains. “We would hope that people would come out and gain a deeper understanding of both the poverty that exists in these areas but also the hope that exists for these children that they can break this cycle. There are things going on in these places that are putting their arms around these kids, putting some protection around these kids, and really giving them a shot at a better life.”

n June 13, The Smoothie King Center in New Orleans will host the final SmackDown Live before the brand’s pay-per-view event, Money in the Bank, the following weekend. Since the brand split in July 2016, SmackDown Live has developed a reputation for being the land of opportunity as superstars like SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi, AJ Styles, Baron Corbin, and the tag team of Tyler Breeze and Fandango have seen a rise to stardom on the brand. In fact, the idea of SmackDown Live being the land of opportunity stretches all the way to the premium title on the brand as Jinder Mahal recently claimed the WWE Championship. For Jinder, being a WWE superstar was something that he always wanted as he watched and looked up to WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. With last year’s
brand split, Jinder arrived on Raw, the company’s flagship show and spent his time in the mid to lower card before being moved to SmackDown Live as part of the Superstar Shakeup this past April. On just his second night, Jinder earned his place as number one contender for Randy Orton’s WWE Championship, which set him up to achieve his lifelong goal. “I actually wasn’t expecting it right away, but I’ve been working very hard at becoming a champion in WWE. It was one of my goals, and I was doing everything I could to pursue that goal. Dieting hard, training hard, improving in the ring, working on my promos, working on my look, working on all facets of my game to become a champion in the WWE,” the first WWE Champion of Indian descent says. “WWE, especially SmackDown, is the land of

opportunity and they reward hard work with opportunity. It was a great opportunity and I capitalized on the opportunity.” However, the life of a WWE superstar, especially a champion, can be quite the grind as they travel all across the world to deliver high octane matches day in and day out. “Honestly, being a WWE superstar isn’t like a normal job. You don’t clock in or clock out, you’re on 24/7,” Jinder says of the job. “At any time you could be on a flight, doing media interviews, doing rehab on an injury. There’s really no off-time, and even on your off-time, I’ve got to watch what I eat, exercise, get massages, train, and do my stretching.” And when it’s time for a show, Jinder can be found in the locker room going through his stretching and warm
up routine. “An hour before my match, I’m already warming up and getting my body loose and just mentally focusing on the match because you have to be there a hundred percent, not only physically but also mentally,” he says of the preparation. “We literally leave it all out. A lot of people might have misconceptions about pro wrestling or WWE live, but I promise you if you come to one of our events live we will change your misconceptions that you have. You will see that we really are world class athletes and we leave it all in the ring one hundred percent of the time.” SmackDown Live’s upcoming appearance in New Orleans will be the

best of the best. The tag team division is really hot right now with the Usos as champions. We have American Alpha, Breezango, and the New Day just made their return. All in all it’s going to be a great show and all your favorite WWE superstars will be there from SmackDown. Louisiana is definitely a special place for WWE. We had Wrestlemania 30 there, and it’s cool that we’re coming back again very soon because that was a great Wrestlemania. ummer is here and it’s time to hit the open road. With the sunroof open and the warm wind blowing your hair around, it’s hard not to get all nostalgic for a good old-fashioned road trip with your family or friends. And that road trip doesn’t have to take months of planning or tons of money. In fact, that road trip could take you to some of the best hidden gems of our very own state. In February, Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser announced the launch of the #OnlyLouisiana Ambassador Program. Aimed at sharing what makes Louisiana such a great place, the program looks to build a Bayou Krewe to help share all the crispy fried, swamp-soaked goodness of Louisiana through social media. It seems only fitting to seize this opportunity to share our favorite #OnlyLouisiana picks to get you geared up for a great summer of travel. Break out the GPS and get going – there’s a lot to see out there.
State Park Cabin Getaways
Louisiana Bass Trail
WHERE: SLIDELL
WHERE: DOYLINE, ST. JOSEPH, HOMER, FARMERVILLE, DELHI, ZWOLLE, ANACOCO, & CHATHAM
Louisiana has long been a popular spot for tourists and locals alike looking to bag a prize bass. The 1990s saw a handful of some of the largest bass ever recorded in the state and in an effort to reenergize the sport, the offices of Tourism and State Parks introduced the Louisiana Bass Trail in April. Sign up at louisianabasstrail.com and receive a free Bassport to take to any of the eight participating North Louisiana State Parks. Fish four lakes and earn yourself a t-shirt. Fish seven and you’ll get some #OnlyLouisiana gear.
Boozes and Bikes Tour WHERE: NEW ORLEANS
Only in New Orleans will you find a way to sip and safely swerve through the city, all while learning a little more about the Big Easy. Hop onto one of the Confederacy of Cruisers’ provided bikes (complete with cupholders) and pedal along with your tour guide for five miles as he or she tells you all about how the drinks legendary to the area helped establish the city we know and love today. The tour price includes five cocktail stops, as well as the price of drinks and gratuity to make the journey fuss-free.

WHERE: WESTWEGO TO SPRINGFIELD
Summer is synonymous with enjoying the great outdoors and what better way to do just that than by staying at one of 18 state parks. Some offer amenities to make you feel right at home (hello, Wi-Fi!) and the twelve lining Marcello Canal at Bayou Segnette State Park are brand new. The best part? The cabins offer a great escape without putting a toll on your wallet. Stays range from $120-$150 a night.
Old Town Slidell Soda Shop Destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, this Slidell icon has since been restored to its former glory. Opened in the 1980s to honor the nostalgia of pharmacy soda fountains, the soda jerks behind the counter are pros, serving up sundaes and malts with precise training. Belly up to the sleek countertop and enjoy a hand mixed soft drink on sweltering days or enjoy a po’boy and ice cream soda as an afternoon snack.
The Gardens of the American Rose Center WHERE: SHREVEPORT
Located on a sprawling 118-acre plot, the national headquarters of the American Rose Society curates the country’s largest park dedicated solely to roses. In 1974, the non-profit, educational organization was looking for a new home and a group of loyal Louisiana members rallied support for the move to be to Shreveport. A donation of land encouraged the move and today, the park features hundreds of varieties of the stunning flower, including a coral grandiflora rose aptly named “Shreveport” by the society to honor the move. In addition to the 65+ rose gardens, there’s also a unique mix of companion plants, sculptures and fountains, making this a serene escape. The garden is at its peak between April and October then is magically transformed to a winter wonderland just in time for Christmas.

MOVIE PREVIEW BY JONAH GIROIR PHOTOS VIA ROTTEN TOMATOES

he kids are out of school, the weather is hotter, and hit blockbusters are about to flood the screens at our local theater. The summer is upon us and Hollywood has a lot to offer as the midyear slate rolls out. June kicks off with two major releases in the form of Wonder Woman and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (June 2). Following in the footsteps of Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman is the fourth entry in the DC Comics Extended Universe. Gal Gadot made her first appearance as the Amazonian warrior in last year’s Batman v. Superman and was one of the bright spots in a movie that caused a wide split between
critics and the general public. Trailers have depicted what looks to be a very interesting period piece set around World War I as Diana Prince looks to fulfill her destiny as arguably the most famous female superhero, Wonder Woman. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie follows two students as they hypnotize their principal into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, superhero named Captain Underpants. This animated film is based on the popular eight-volume book series by Dav Pilkey that you most likely saw at a school’s book fair. Speaking of cinematic universes, Universal Pictures is looking to launch a new one with their classic creature features, starting with The Mummy (June

9). Rebooting the Brendan Fraser-led Mummy trilogy from the late 90s/early 2000s, this iteration stars Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella as The Mummy, and Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll. The premise of a new Mummy movie alone is enough to color me intrigued, but the fact that it’s kicking off a connected universe of other classic movie monsters makes this an even more attractive offer. A true story about Tupac Shakur, a wild bachelorette party that results in a dead male stripper, and another Pixar animation make up what I’m deeming “Variety Weekend” as we move deeper into the month of June. All Eyez On Me, Rough Night, and Cars 3 all hit theaters on June 16. All Eyez On Me takes the audience through Tupac’s
Friday, July 14, 4-10 pm Saturday, July 15, 8 am - 5 pm
UNDER THE US 90 BRIDGE - DOWNTOWN MORGAN CITY - RAIN OR SHINE rise to superstardom as a hip hop artist, actor, poet, and activist, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial time at Death Row Records. Tupac became a cultural icon during his time and his career and persona continue to grow long after his passing. Rough Night follows Scarlett Johnansson, Zoe Kravitz, Kate McKinnon, Demi Moore, and Jillian Bell on a wild bachelorette party weekend that leads to them accidentally killing a male stripper. I’m getting a The Hangover type vibe from the descriptions of this comedy so it’ll likely hit similar beats. Finally, Cars 3 sees the return of fan-favorite Lightning McQueen for another set of adventures on and off the race track. Except, Lightning is no longer the young upstart that he once was. As the older veteran in the circuit, Lightning sets out to prove to a new generation of racers that he’s still the best race car in the world. The month closes out with four movies that can provide entertainment for everyone in the family. Transformers: The Last Knight (June 21) is the fifth movie in a franchise that has made tons of money over the years. Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and Megatron have wowed audiences with their transformations, intense action, and a little bit
of humor sprinkled throughout. Look for more of that as humans and Transformers wage war while an absentee Optimus Prime tries to bring his home planet, Cybertron, back to life. Baby Driver (June 28) follows a talented, young getaway driver that sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway when he meets the girl of his dreams. However, cutting that cord is not so easy as he’s attached to a crime boss that threatens his life, love, and freedom. The House (June 30) looks to be a fun time as comedy greats Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler open an illegal casino in their neighbor’s basement in order to earn money for their daughter’s college fund. The premise alone gets my comedy senses tingling. And just in time for the end of the month, Despicable Me 3 (June 30) makes its grand entrance into the summer blockbuster season. Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, Agnes, and the Minions make their return to the beloved franchise. Gru must team up with Dru, a twin brother he never knew about, to defeat a new villain, Balthazar Bratt. Get ready for more laughs and warm fuzzies as the Minions and this hodgepodge family invite you to enjoy their crazy antics.

THE INFINITE
BY NICHOLAS MAINERI Review by Jessi Suire, Terrebonne Parish Main Library Public Relations and Programs Coordinator
D
ebut novelist Nicholas Mainieri sparks a fire between the borders of New Orleans and Mexico in 2016’s breakout hit “The Infinite.” Mainieri currently teaches English literature and creative writing at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux and is on the fast track to success with critics drawing up stellar comparisons to old favorites like Cormac McCarthy and Denis Johnson. “The Infinite” is a beautifully rendered trek into the violent drug wars happening throughout the streets of Mexico, and scrappy heroine Luz Hidalgo’s place in all of it. Much of the story unfolds outward from Luz’s relationship with Jonah McBee, a young man who has lost the last vestiges of his family and identity in post-Katrina New Orleans. Luz herself is native to Mexico but has since found herself in New Orleans with her father as he tries to look for work in the ravaged city. The story of Luz and Jonah is told in delicate, economic prose. Mainieri treats the aching love between the two with sensitivity and reflection as they try to find in each other some part of themselves that has been lost through family tragedy and residential devastation. Once Luz discovers she is pregnant with Jonah’s child, she flees to Mexico by her father’s orders. He is steadfast in his belief that the child will be better off in the care of Luz and her grandmother in their native country, despite the strain this puts on Luz and her relationship with Jonah. What follows next is a whirlwind of violence that even the most astute readers would find difficult to predict. Luz is propelled unwittingly into the bloodshed of the Mexican drug cartel when, on her way to her grandmother’s in Las Monarcas, she is abducted and nearly killed by a man known as Cicatriz, undoubtedly a reference to the scar that runs halfway down his face. She manages to run off with an ever-important relic of Cicatriz’s—a large knife that will uphold its significance throughout much of Luz’s story. Little does she know, Jonah has decided to brave the border, and he heads into Mexico to find her. “The Infinite” is both an homage to the boundaries between worlds and to the vast expressions of love people find in one another. Though New Orleans and Mexico are divided into two separate places at the border, truthfully they are one, inseparable, boundless, unable to be identified all but for man-made boundary lines. The novel is a meditation on the limitlessness of place as well as the infinite expanse that canyons between two people in love. Thus is Jonah’s struggle to find Luz and bring her back to New Orleans, to be a father to his child. Intensely and addictively in love, Jonah and Luz are forever changed by unforeseen events that rip their relationship at the seams. For Luz, there is no going back from the violence she endures in her native country. Mainieri’s debut novel is not one to be missed. Told in sharp, vivid color, with poetic brevity and plenty of heart to match, “The Infinite” should certainly be at the top of any to-be-read pile.
