hen Kassie Voisin started her business three years ago, she had good intentions. The idea was to give back to the community she grew up in, and recently, she put those good intentions into action with Kassie’s Canvas for Kids. Since establishing the business, Kassie has made a name for herself in the area with some of her murals decorating the walls of Pinocchio’s Pizza Playhouse and Da Swamp, while others bring cheer to various schools. And even though these projects hold a special place in Kassie’s heart, putting smiles on the faces of local kids battling illnesses has always been a calling for her. “It was kind of one of those things where I wanted to start a painting business and I wanted to give back to Houma. Every time we’d see a flood happening or a child that was sick, I’d say in my head, ‘I want to paint their room,’” the artist says. “It was good intentions, but I wasn’t doing anything with it. I realized that good intentions weren’t going to get the job done.” After an initial Facebook post asking for nominations of deserving local children who might enjoy a free mural, Kassie was inundated with responses. It didn’t take long for the artist to find her way to the home of Solan Boudwin, a boy battling spinal muscular atrophy. “Through hard work and lots of training we had to learn

6 July 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

how to properly care for my son because he was now a very special child,” Solan’s mother Christina recalls of her son’s diagnosis. “November 9, 2012 we were released to go home. December, before Christmas, we got some devastating results. My son Solan Boudwin was diagnosed at six months old with SMA type 1 (spinal muscular atrophy). I said to myself this wasn’t real.” With the help of local carpenters, electricians, and sponsors, Kassie was able to bring a little joy to Solan’s life and room by transforming it into a Super Mario themed land that looks like it came straight out of the video game. Take a peek inside the room and you’ll find mushrooms, bricks, stars, and even Mario and his pals Yoshi and Toad. In addition to Solan, Kassie has been able to reach five other children so far, with plans to reach many more. Once the community caught wind of the idea, Kassie had more support than she expected and now finds herself capable of much more than she had planned. “It ended up being this thing where it started out with one child we were going to reach this year and now we’re up to five that have been sponsored for room makeovers,” she says of the help. “It really started a ripple effect in Houma where people began to say, ‘I want a part of that. I want to be a part of this in any way that I can.’ It’s been awesome to see the community

step up to the plate.” Local hardware stores have joined in by donating all the paint supplies Kassie needs to decorate the rooms, carpenters lend their talents to create custom furniture and cabinets for each kid’s whirligigs and knick-knacks, and electricians install custom lighting. With all of this giving however, Kassie is receiving much more through her interactions with the kids. “You walk in to meet the kids, and you immediately want to cry because it’s just an unfair hand that they were dealt. And once you start working, you get joyful because you’re so excited to see their expressions. And then you’re sad when you leave them because you wish you could stay and hear more about them because they’re just so inspirational,” Kassie says. “They are the true definition of strength and hope. It taught me that joy does not come from circumstances because Lord knows if they can get through what they’ve been through, I can get through what comes my way.” The work done for Solan and the other kids so far is not only making waves in the local community. Ellen Degeneres recently had her manager call Kassie and with the continued growth of her team and the potential of reaching an even wider audience, Kassie is ready to see what’s in store. “I feel like we’re at the tip of the iceberg right now. I feel like we can’t even imagine how big this is going to get,” she says. “I definitely want this to get bigger than just me. I always tell people, ‘You can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.’ That’s one of my favorite quotes because if we all just help one person, you know many kids we can reach?”

t’s summertime, and at Le Petit Theatre de Terrebonne, that means that music is in the air! It is, after all, tradition. Just as it is tradition to do a summertime musical, tradition is the theme in their rendition of the classic “Fiddler on the Roof.” Set in Imperial Russia in 1905, with a focus on the Jewish religious traditions and customs, this richly cultural and well-known play holds an appeal that transcends any timeframe or ethnicity. Written in 1964 by Joseph Stein and featuring music and lyrics by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, “Fiddler on the Roof” is considered by many to be a timeless expression of the powerful influence of tradition on our lives. The highly acclaimed piece has won nine Tony Awards, including awards for Best Musical, Score, Book, Direction and Choreography. Including songs such as “Sunrise, Sunset”, “Do You Love Me?”, and its prologue, “Tradition”, this theatrical production is sure to arouse curiosities, tug at the heartstrings and elicit feelings of nostalgia. The story begins with Tevye (Larry Hyatt), the father of five daughters, illustrating the importance of tradition through song in the prologue, “Tradition.” Without it, he says, “Our lives would be as shaky as a ‘fiddler on the roof !’” Despite his resolve to continue the many traditions that are practiced in the Jewish culture, the ever-changing nature of the world has made its way into his home, and more specifically, into the hearts of his three oldest daughters, Tzeitel (Christina Samanie), Hodel (Kirsten Bazet), and Chava (Amber Gatlin). Deciding many things, such as what people eat and when, what they wear, or even who they marry, tradition is paramount in many cultures. But what happens when the times change? Sometimes, people change with it. Can Tevye accept the choices of his strong-willed daughters as they rebel to find their own way…and their own husbands? Can he change too? Or will he, himself, become the “fiddler on the roof”, unsteady in these turbulent times? To add to the pressure, the family must use the very tradition being resisted to remain strong when the Tsar decrees that the Jews be evicted from their village. This powerful testament to the challenges that come with accepting change reaches a wide audience, making for a great family presentation. This cast and chorus are led by a trio comprised of directors Stephanie Kenney-Gomez and Kim Champagne, and choreographer Wanda Dishman. With enthusiasm and delight evident in her voice, Stephanie sums up this presentation in one powerful word: “Iconic.” “It is such a pleasure to do something this unique, this intricate,” she says, remembering her first show, when she choreographed “Fiddler on the Roof” 44 years ago. “It’s so well-known and beloved to many people across all lines and ethnicities. It’s very exciting that I get to do it again.”

tanding amid millions of volts of electric currents, being buried alive in a water-submerged tomb, encased in a block of ice, standing atop a pillar in Bryant Park for 35 hours…yet illusionist and endurance artist David Blaine has yet to conquer his greatest feat. He’s currently in the midst of it. David, who made a name for himself by sharing his bamboozling card tricks on TV screens across America beginning in the early ‘90s, has made his mark on the world of magic by tackling stunts that leave the average person perplexed and stunned. No tapping hats with sticks to make bunnies reappear or making people vanish – David aims to shock and awe through undergoing some of the most extreme challenges imaginable. His ability to push his body to the limits

10 July 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

and his perplexing up-close tricks have stupefied the likes of Kanye West, Tom Brady, Katy Perry, as well as every sitting American president. He is now giving audiences across the country their own chance to get in on the action. On May 30, David launched his first live tour, a marathon 40-city journey combining one jaw-dropping stunt after another into one show. On July 16, Louisiana audiences get their chance to witness the magic for themselves when he takes the stage at the Saenger Theatre. “I’ve been doing magic on television for the last twenty years and the big plan has always been to do a live tour, but I needed all the pieces to be right. It took me this long to learn how to do all these things that together would make a show that was worth doing. Otherwise, my interest was not just putting together a bunch of illusions. I wanted to make a show that has me

and the audience on the edge of their seats, feeling what’s going on and not trying to figure out how, but more just trying to be a part of what it is. It’s been a lifelong dream so it’s finally coming to fruition and I think it’s everything I hoped it would be plus more.” But combining all of these feats into a single sitting night after night hasn’t been easy for the 44-year-old. Having spent so much time reviewing the stunts of his past, David says it’s been particularly difficult wrapping his mind around trying to tackle what has been incredibly taxing mentally and physically consistently over the course of two months. For him, it’s the ultimate challenge. “That’s what this tour kind of is,” David says. “It’s a bunch of things I don’t even know how they can be pulled off night after night and that’s part of the goal and the challenge…It’s the most difficult but the most exciting endurance challenge of my entire career by far.” For those that dare step into the

insane, chaotic, and intriguing world of David Blaine, he promises they will not be disappointed. In fact, he says you never know what will happen. “This is a show where anything can happen and may happen,” he explains. “There’s a lot of variables…I’m not just walking through the motions of it. It’s an actual, physical challenge night after night.”

A DAY OF PLAY BY DREW MILLER PHOTO COURTESY OF HOUMA-TERREBONNE CIVIC CENTER

T

he Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center will host its annual Summer Fun Kids Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 29. Entering its 18th year, Kids Day has been around since the opening of the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, earning its place as a mainstay for the venue. Over the years, the event has helped provide an affordable community event that allows families to make memories and capture the minds of young ones. Going into this year’s event, Scott Belanger, marketing and sales manager for the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, and his team are expecting nearly 3,000 people to entertain with inflatables, games, exhibits, and stage performances. The Houma Fire Department and Louisiana State Police will provide educational services in the “Safety Square” area. The organizations will bring equipment and vehicles that the

12 July 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

children can have an up-close learning experience with. “They do a good job of interacting with the children and giving them valuable information,” Scott says of the organizations. This year, Kids Day will bring back Barn Hill Preserve and welcome a new big exhibitor, Houma’s Breakin’ The Code. Barn Hill Preserve will bring exotic animals that kids can interact with and learn about. Scott describes these animals as “not normal farm animals,” and adding that one year they even brought a kangaroo. Breakin’ The Code’s contribution to the festivities will be one of their intricate escape rooms where kids must work together to figure out clues as they try to break out. Engaging kids throughout the day is the backbone of the event, which is

where exhibitors like Barn Hill Preserve and Breakin’ The Code come in. “A big part of Kids Day is to bring in exhibitors,” Scott explains. “It is a day of entertainment for children, but also good for businesses to meet new customers.” At the exhibitor booths, different businesses and organizations will engage and share products with families, giving the event a marketplace atmosphere while also catering to the young ones’ interests. In addition to the exhibits, kids will be treated to a mixture of local youth talent: theater groups, musicians, dancers and entertainment performed by entertainers like magicians or puppeteers on the Synergy Bank Stage.

WANT TO GO? SUMMER FUN KIDS DAY IS JULY 29 AT THE HOUMA-TERREBONNE CIVIC CENTER. ADMISSION IS $5 AND FREE FOR THOSE UNDER THE AGE OF ONE. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT HOUMACIVICCENTER. COM/KIDSDAY.

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES BY JONAH GIROIR PHOTOS VIA ROTTEN TOMATOES

J

uly brings about an interesting mix to the silver screen. Everyone’s favorite web-slinging superhero gets a reboot and a connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, apes ride horses into war with humans, a new Christopher Nolan directed film hits theaters, and another animated feature gives the kiddos something to enjoy. That seems like a fun group of movies, so let’s dive in and see what the month has to offer. The month kicks off with SpiderMan: Homecoming (July 7). With Tom Holland now portraying Peter Parker, the web-slinger made his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with last year’s Captain America: Civil War. That was a strong showing for Tom Holland as he aims to fill in the boots once worn by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Moving into his own film, we find Peter in

high school, reminiscing on his time involved with Iron Man, Captain America, and the rest of the Avengers. However, he’s young and not ready to take on all the responsibilities that come with being a superhero. The movie looks to be a coming of age story filled with laughter, adventure, and

14 July 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

a lot of heart as Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) mentors Peter along the way. We will also be treated to the first appearance of Spider-Man villain, Vulture, played by Michael Keaton. As much as I love Spider-Man, it’s hard to overcome the level of excitement I have for the third installment in the recent Planet of the Apes series, War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14). It’s been really entertaining to watch the growth of Caesar (Andy Serkis) throughout this trilogy and see how he’s dealt with the pains of loss and betrayal from

the humans and his fellow apes. The crews behind these movies have done an outstanding job at humanizing the ape characters through motion capture and CGI, along with the acting performances from Serkis and the others. The previous two films, especially Dawn of the Planets of the Apes, did great jobs at inviting the audience into the world portrayed in the film and this one looks like it will continue to deliver. Early critic reviews have been nothing short of amazing, and that just continues to make me even more excited to see Caesar and his crew take on Woody Harrelson and the rest of the humans in a battle for survival. The third weekend of the month hits moviegoers with a triple threat of action, comedy, and a war film from a renowned director. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (July 21) is a sci-fi spectacle that follows Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevigne) as they strive to maintain order throughout the universe. The duo visits Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all corners of the universe. However, danger looms.

Space travel, action, and a sprinkle of romance make this an intriguing movie. Girls Trip (July 21) is a star-filled comedy that follows four lifelong friends on a trip to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. With their sisterhood rekindled, the quartet find themselves embracing their wild sides and embarking on a journey filled with more than enough dancing, drinking, brawling, and romancing. Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Kate Walsh, Mike Colter, and Regina Hall lead the rest of the cast in this belly aching laughfest. Finally, Dunkirk (July 21) is the tenth film from renowned director Christopher Nolan. With a resume that includes The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, The Prestige, and Interstellar, it’s safe to say that Nolan is pretty good at this directing thing. His latest film follows the stories of Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, Canada, and France as they are surrounded by the German army and evacuated during an intense battle in World War II. The talent in front of the screen is notable as well as Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, and Harry Styles lend their capabilities to the film. Look for this to be an intense

film that captures the hectic moments the soldiers had to endure as they waited on an evacuation to bring them to safety. The month closes out with The Emoji Movie and Atomic Blonde (July 28). With The Emoji Movie, the audience enters into a never-beforeseen secret world inside smartphones where everyone’s favorite emojis live. In a world where each emoji has one facial expression, Gene stands out as he was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. He and his best friend, Hi-5, and Jailbreak set out on an adventure through the phone apps to help Gene become “normal” like the other emojis. However, their adventure becomes much bigger when a greater danger threatens the phone, leaving the three emojis to save their world. Atomic Blonde follows Agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) on a near impossible mission to Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city. She partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to help make it out of this game of spies alive.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING BY KATHRYN CROFT Review By Rob Jenkins, Reference Librarian Terrebonne Parish Library System

B

est-selling suspense author Kathryn Croft continues her string of psychological thrillers with her twisted fifth novel, “While You Were Sleeping”. Croft, a former secondary teacher, lives with her family in England, which is also the setting for her novel. “While You Were Sleeping” centers around Tara Logan, an artist in her late thirties. Tara lives a quiet suburban life with her husband Noah, their rebellious teenage daughter Rosie, and eleven-year-old well-adjusted son Spencer. Tara’s life crashes headlong into the abyss when she wakes in her neighbor’s bedroom to find him murdered, with no memory of how anything happened. Tara rationalizes that she did not kill her neighbor, but she waits in constant fear that the police will come for her. The cops, however, suspect that her

daughter committed the murder. Worse yet, she discovers her husband may be having an affair, and her seemingly perfect sister suffers constant abuse from her controlling boyfriend. Tara also begins to get dangerously close to the detective assigned to solve her neighbor’s murder. Tara struggles to discover the identity of the murderer while also trying desperately to keep her family together. “While You Were Sleeping” contains many twists and turns. Most of the characters seem to be hiding who they truly are. Everyone except for Spencer exhibits traits throughout the novel that convinces Tara, and the reader, that they may be unreliable, untrustworthy, and a possible suspect. At its core, the novel explores themes of trust, loyalty, and faithfulness in familial relationships, all set against the backdrop of a tangled murder mystery.

A gripping psychological thriller you just can’t put down. 18 July 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide
