M

usic runs through Jeff McCarty’s blood. His great-grandmother, grandfather, and father, all played before him, and now it’s his turn to take the stage with his debut album, “Step Out.” “It’s a family tradition for me. That’s pretty much how it started,” Jeff says. “I was three years old when I sang in front of my first crowd with my pops. I was never nervous or anything like that, even as a little kid. It just kind of came naturally.” His music, however, is not shaped by a favorite genre. Jeff has dabbled in many different forms of music across the spectrum, giving him a diverse background. “Obviously, I like the blues and funk. I like a lot of R&B stuff. That definitely has shaped the way I sing and the way I approach things in the way I write my own music,” he explains. “At the same time, I was a drummer in a bunch of metal bands when I was a kid. I liked all that stuff too. That stuff didn’t necessarily shape me as a singer, but as a drummer, I guess it did. I try to get into all that I can because you learn from everything that you do.” After many years on stage in Louisiana, playing in various bands and sharing bills with everyone from George Jones, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, to Bonham, REO Speedwagon and Styx, Jeff found himself looking for more. The years in these cover bands helped him to make a good living, but it wasn’t doing anything for his soul. “I had been itching to write my own songs,” he explains. The first steps towards the album came when he and Tab Benoit’s mutual friend Frank Nicotra passed away and they held a benefit in his honor. “I was telling him (Tab) how I wanted to play my own music and write these original songs and do all these things,” Jeff says. “I had a couple of songs, and I didn’t like the way it went. The way I wrote ‘Angel Fly,’ it sounded like ‘Simple Man,’ almost. He took it and helped turn it into what it is now.”

In addition to Tab, who provides drums and guitar on the album, Josh Garret, Corey Duplechin, and Tillis Verdin all joined Jeff at Whiskey Bayou Studio for the writing and recording of his debut record. “Once everybody got involved, the tunes just started rolling out,” Jeff recalls. “It’s quite amazing how it all just developed so quickly and good quality music was just pouring out of that whole situation. We were fortunate and blessed enough to have good chemistry with everyone that was working on it.” Thematically, the album was shaped through Jeff’s life experiences. This can particularly be found in the third and fourth tracks on the record, “Angel Fly” and “Step Out.” Starting with “Angel Fly,” Jeff explains that the song came from a dark time in his life. “When I was nine years old, I lost two brothers in car wrecks, nine months apart. I watched my dad take his last breath when I was 18. In February of 2010, my mother passed away and then in June of 2010, my wife passed away,” he recalls. “I went through a really dark time there for a couple years. That tune came out of all that stuff, and that tune to me is a testimony to all of it.” However, the following track, “Step Out,” takes listeners and Jeff in a different direction. “I think that song was meant for me because it talks about how you step out and dance in the rain when everything is bad and your life seems to suck. Take it for what it is and make the best out of it,” he says. “Between those two songs, it’s a really sad thing and the next track, if you listen to words, it brings you up out of that sadness. Those two songs for me right there, those are the two that describe my story the most. We didn’t mean for that to happen. It happened because it was supposed to.” Jeff’s debut album was recently released, and it has been an exciting time for the musician. “It’s been great. It takes time to get it going, but usually things that happen too fast don’t last. I’m digging the interviews and I’m getting write-ups from blues magazines in the Netherlands, which is really cool,” he says of the process. “And then with Best of the Bayou and Voice of the Wetlands coming up, that’s a direct result of creating a record and putting it out. So far, it’s been very exciting.”

JEFF’S DEBUT ALBUM, “STEP OUT,” CAN BE FOUND ON ITUNES OR AT WHISKEYBAYOURECORDS.COM.

A

night full of eating and entertainment awaits as the Bayou Chapter of the Louisiana Restaurant Association (LRA) will host its annual Culinary Showcase on Aug. 24 at The Cypress Columns. Twenty-one restaurants and food services are ready to give samples to guests throughout the night, including Cinclare, Spahr’s Seafood, La Casa Del Sol, Grady V’s American Bistro, Crawdaddy Seafood, and The Ground Pat’i to name a few. Three live demonstrations showing the step-by-step process of chefs creating some of their favorite dishes will be blown up on the big screen for guests to watch. “It is like watching your favorite cooking shows like ‘Chopped’ live!” says Linda Ayers, president of the Bayou Chapter of the LRA and owner of The Ground Pat’i. One of the night’s live demos will be given by acclaimed chef and owner of Brigsten’s Restaurant in Uptown New Orleans, Frank Brigsten, who specializes in modern creole cuisine. Chef Randy Cheramie from the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls State University will emcee the night’s proceedings. Amongst the demonstrations and delicious food, live and silent auctions will be held for items such as jewelry, a paid night out in New Orleans with a riverboat ride, a party at Donner-Peltier Distillers, restaurant gift cards for date nights, and more. The showcase is an annual fundraiser for the LRA’s education foundation and provides to students interested in furthering their career in the Culinary Arts. The funds raised from the event will help provide resources to the ProStart program as well as scholarships for the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute.

ProStart, a nationwide, two-year program for high school students, teaches culinary techniques and management skills to prepare the next generation for careers in the restaurant industry. Over 2,000 students in Louisiana, across 60 high schools, are in the program learning a curriculum that focuses on basics such as knife skills, food safety, and presentation. Linda explains, “Education in the restaurant industry is well-needed. It is one of the biggest employers in the United States.” Research from the National Restaurant Association drives that point home as about 14 million people are employed by the restaurant industry. Closer to home, the Lafourche Parish Magnet Center’s ProStart Students competed in the 2017 Louisiana Prostart Invitational. Under the mentorship of Donald Spahr and his chefs, the first-year participant team of three placed fifth out of the twenty-two teams competing in the invitational. You’ll be able to get a taste of their top five finishing dessert recipe as one of the team members will be on hand at the Culinary Showcase. At the end of the night, guests will be able to vote on a People’s Choice Award for the best dish in the Culinary Showcase. It’s bound to be a great night for all in attendance, filled with fun entertainment and good eats. “People should come to the event because it supports education,” Linda says. “Also, it’s fun. Everybody loves cooking.”

TICKETS FOR GENERAL ADMISSION TO THE CULINARY EXPERIENCE ARE $35 AT THE DOOR AND $25 ONLINE AT LRA.ORG. THE SHOWCASE GOES ON FROM 6-10PM.

T

he Bayou Black Tarpons Swim Team will host its annual Tarpon Triathlon on August 5, which will be followed by the South Central Swim Association’s Bayou Kids Triathlon the next day. Both events will take place at Bayou Black Recreational Center and its surrounding area. Originating in 2010, the Tarpon Triathlon was established to help support the Bayou Black Swim Team, the current reigning South Central Swim Association (SCSA) champions. The team, consisting of a little over 200 swimmers ranging from ages 4 to 18 years old, is able to buy the equipment needed to compete each year from the proceeds of the triathlon. “It helps keep costs down to a minimum for each swimmer,” Michelle Matta, the race director for both events, says. For the competitors of the Tarpon Triathlon, expected to have nearly 250 participants, the race will start at 7:30 a.m. with a 150-meter pool swim. After the long distance swim, contestants will proceed to bike a 10-mile course that leads from the recreational center to down along the shaded, curvy Southdown Mandalay Road and eventually returning to the Bayou Black Park. For the last leg of the course, participants will run partially on the track around the park then back along Southdown Mandalay Road for the finish. Following the awards ceremony, the day will continue with food, drinks, and music. The 6th Annual Bayou Kids Triathlon will start at the Bayou Black pool the next day at 7:30 a.m. Nearly 150 kids ranging from ages 3 to 14 years old will compete in a similar course to the adults but in shorter distances that correlate with their age group. Safety will be a priority for the race with lifeguards positioned in the pool for the younger children and alongside the pool for the older ones, police and volunteers along the bike and run courses, and water stations for the kids to stay hydrated. The SCSA also offers a physically challenged division in the triathlon. Volunteers of the race work with each parent to determine the distance each child can achieve based on age and ability. “It’s very inspiring,” Michelle says, “to see these kids do stuff some adults won’t do.” Contestants and family members can enjoy the awards ceremony, music, food, and beverages that will follow the race as well. Like the Tarpon Triathlon, the proceeds from the Kids Triathlon help out local youth who are dedicated to the sport of swimming. Funds from this triathlon go to the SCSA for a way to provide scholarships to selected, eligible members from all eight teams in the association. Two-to-three swimmers in the association are chosen every year to receive the scholarship. “It’s a way to give back to them for committing to swim,” Michelle says. “It’s hard to get a swimming scholarship.” Brady Levron, a 14-year member of the Larose Lasers Swim Team and 2017 graduate from South Lafourche High School, was one of the recipients of the scholarship this year. Brady says the scholarship helps further his education, reach goals he set for himself, and puts him in a better position to succeed in life. Brady will be studying pre-med at Nicholls State University in the fall and hopes to become a family physician in the Bayou Lafourche community. “The SCSA has done so much for so many people and helps put their swimmers in a position to succeed,” Brady says.

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES

BY JONAH GIROIR PHOTOS VIA ROTTEN TOMATOES

T

he big summer months on the silver screen have come and gone as May through July contained some pretty heavy hitters. However, August still has something to offer for moviegoers, and there’s a nice mix that should have a little bit of movie magic for everyone. The month kicks off with three intense films in the form of The Dark Tower, Kidnap and Detroit (August 4). The Dark Tower is based off the seven-book series written by Stephen King between 1982 and 2004. The series, filled with elements of fantasy, science fiction, horror, and the Wild West, kicks off by following Gunslinger Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) as he traverses an Old West-like landscape in search of the Dark Tower, in hopes of preserving his dying world. Matthew McConaughey also stars as the Man in Black, Roland’s arch-nemesis in this throttling actionadventure. Kidnap is a thriller/mystery film that follows Karla Dyson (Halle Berry) as she hunts down her son’s kidnappers. Without a cellphone and knowing she has no time to wait for help, Karla takes matters into her own hands. This chase is bound to have viewers on the edge of their seats. Detroit comes from the Academy Award winning director of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow. The film explores the darkest moments during the civil unrest that overtook Detroit in the summer of 1967. John Boyega, Jacob Lattimore, and

John Krasinski add their talents to the cast. The following weekend provides a horror movie and an animated film to make up a diverse selection for moviegoers. Annabelle: Creation (August 11) invites viewers back into the home of the dollmaker and his wife, several years following the death of their daughter. The couple welcomes a nun and several girls into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle. The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature (August 11) sees the return of Surly Squirrel and the rest of his gang. Here, the evil mayor has decided to bulldoze Liberty Park and build an amusement park in its place. Surly gathers up his ragtag group of animal friends to unite to save their home, defeat the mayor, and take back the park. The Hitman’s Bodyguard (August 18) is the only release for the month’s third weekend. Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson join forces in this action comedy that sees them working together for 24 hilarious and actionpacked hours. The only problem is that they absolutely hate each other. Salma

14 August 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

Hayek and Gary Oldman round out a talented group. The final weekend of August consists of Polaroid, The Life and Death of John Gotti and All Saints (August 25). Polaroid follows a high school loner, Bird Fitcher, who comes across a vintage Polaroid camera. Unbeknownst to her, the camera contains a special power that curses those who have their picture taken to a tragic fate. John Travolta stars as legendary mobster John Gotti, head of the largest and most powerful crime organization in North America, in The Life and Death of John Gotti. Gotti’s Gambino Family controlled the underground as Gotti used his flamboyant style, charm, and ruthless personae to rise to the top. The story is told through the eyes of John Gotti Jr., and follows the elder Gotti up to his imprisonment, where

Gotti Jr. takes over as the acting Boss of the Family. Finally, All Saints tells the true story of salesman-turned-pastor Michael Spurlock, the tiny church he was ordered to shut down, and a group of refugees from Southeast Asia. Michael’s first assignment as the pastor of All Saints was to close down the church, but that mission changes when the church hesitantly begins to welcome refugees from Burma. The congregation attempts to turn their fertile land into a working farm to pay the church’s bills and feed the people. As the mission continues to grow, Michael must decide between completing his original assignment or listening to a voice stirring in his heart challenging the people of All Saints to risk it all and provide love, care, and hope for the new community.

BACKYARD FORAGING BY ELLEN ZACHOS

Reviewed by Katie Cheramie, Bayou Blue Branch Librarian

H

ave you ever looked at a plant and wondered if it was edible? Or maybe you’ve watched too many The Walking Dead episodes on Netflix and have pondered how you would survive the zombie apocalypse? If you’re curious about edible plants, Backyard Foraging by Ellen Zachos is the book for you. First thing to know about edible plants? Make sure you are eating an edible plant and not a toxic twin! Zachos does an excellent job of breaking down how to identify plants, when to harvest them, and how to prepare them for consumption. In the first two chapters, Zachos describes gear, ethical harvesting techniques, and safety techniques. She gives valuable insight on where to start looking for edible plants in your own backyard, what polluted areas to avoid, and how to not damage the delicate ecosystem, aka how to leave some for the birds. The chapters that follow are organized by greens; fruits and flowers; nuts and seeds; roots, tubers, and rhizomes; plants with many edible parts; and five easy to identify mushrooms. For each plant, there are icons that show peak harvesting time, as well as the scientific name and common name. Next, Zachos explains what the plant is, where it can be found (yards, woods, shady areas, etc.), and which parts are edible. She also demonstrates extensive horticultural knowledge by further explaining how to harvest the plant, how to prepare it for eating, and points out when plants either look or sound like another plant that is poisonous to humans. Backyard Foraging by Ellen Zachos is both visually stunning and insightful. The author provides all the information you need to identify and use wild plants, herbs, flowers, mushrooms, trees, berries, fruits, etc. Each plant has several photos for identification and the author describes each plant in written detail. She provides a plethora of uses for each plant, as well as tips on how to avoid getting sick.
