PROGRESSIVE ROCKERS BY: JOHN LEBOEUF PHOTOS COURTESY OF AYO
6 September 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide
S
cott Ayo has been writing original music since the 80s. Since then, the keyboardist has aspired to work with local musicians and has had success in finding some of the best in and around the city. His band, AYO will be taking the stage at this year’s Best of the Bayou Festival on Friday, September 22nd, and it’s a show you don’t want to miss. Despite several lineup changes since their formation, the band has been solidified and are now as confident as ever. AYO’s current line-up is comprised of Scott on keyboard, guitarist Troy Guerrero, lead vocalist/bassist Jude Chauvin, guitarist Lucas LeCompte and drummer Kermit “Thumper” Tarver. Kermit, the newest member of AYO, was also the Guinness Book of World Records holder for “fastest feet” in 2003. Scott taught Jude in high school and even played keyboard for him at a talent show. Soon after Jude’s graduation in 2008, the duo started a band and began playing music together at various spots three nights a week as a cover band, and for Jude, fresh out of high school, the gigs acted as a job to earn extra income. “We were playing shows at The Balcony, The Brickhouse and Cate Street Pub in Hammond, and covering bands like Better Than Ezra, Foo Fighters and Rage Against The Machine,” Scott explains. Though that band dismembered after a few years, Scott and Jude kept in touch and in 2013, AYO was formed. The group released their first EP titled “Borrowed Time” in October of 2016, and features five original songs from the band. The EP’s title track hits hard with heavier drums and guitars, and “Visual Poetry”
mesmerizes and captivates listeners through its slower tempo and clever lyrics. When it comes to where they draw musical influence from, the group formed their sound from bands like Muse, Rush, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Dream Theater. “We bring in some aspects of hard rock and metal, but mostly progressive rock. We have songs that are moodier like The Cure as well,” Jude explains. Some songs have also been getting air play on internet radio in the States as well as in Japan, Australia, Portugal and the UK. As far as performing goes, AYO is a band that prefers quality over quantity. As of now, a handful of dates throughout the year works very well for the group due to each individual having families and working fulltime jobs. Regardless of the size of the stage, they bring an energy that is fueled by a raw passion for playing music with each other. Be it a bar room or main stage at the House of Blues in New Orleans, they describe their experience as fun and energetic when given the opportunity to perform at any venue. The band has been gigging all around the state for several years, but when it comes to performing on the main stage at Best of the Bayou this year, guitarist Troy Guerrero emphasizes on their excitement by stating that, “It’s so nice to play in our hometown.” This will also be Kermit’s first live performance with the band since joining just over a month ago, and it is something he and the rest of the band are looking forward to. Expect more from AYO in the coming years as the group is currently working on new material and plans on playing more festivals in the surrounding areas.

THE
BY DARIAN GRAIVSHARK PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE LEFEVRE QUARTET
T
he Lefevre name is almost synonymous with the gospel music scene, as the original Lefevre trio traveled and sang across the country in the early 1920s. The Lefevres blazed trails in gospel music throughout the following decades, allowing them to sing for presidents and dignitaries across the world. However, the trio took their performances off the road in the late 1970s. Mylon Lefevre & Broken Heart continued to blaze trails with the Lefevre name as they became one of the top acts in contemporary Christian music in the 80s and 90s, and as we entered the new millennium, the Lefevre name reached prominence again with the Lefevre Quartet. The Lefevre Quartet is a southern gospel music group that was started by Mike LeFevre and his son, Jordan, in 2005. The group brings the Gospel to its listeners through stellar vocals, high energy performances, and a heart for ministry found in each member. Mike takes the baritone role, and has been voted “Favorite Baritone Singer” three years in a row at the Singing News Fan Awards. Jordan, is the quartet’s lead singer, and he has helped the group receive “Favorite Band” nominations from the Singing News Fan Awards and has been nominated for the “Horizon Individual” award. Next up, Jeremy Peace is the tenor vocalist and has played various instruments with groups in the gospel music scene, a career he took on when he turned 21. Keith Plott, the group’s bass vocalist, rounds out the quartet’s lineup. These four men have traveled across the country to bring gospel music to wherever they may be, booking nearly 200 events per year and playing a wide variety of shows like Dollywood, fairs, church events, cruises and more. Accompanying their popularity, the Lefevre Quartet was awarded “Breakout Artist of the Year” in 2007 by the
SGN Awards, and they received a Dove Award in 2009 for their song “Big Mighty God.” Additionally, they were nominated for the Top 10 Traditional Quartet for the Singing News Magazine’s Fan Awards. Even with these accolades, their focus is not on getting awards or recognition. The group’s members aim to bring the messages of Jesus to everyone that may listen to their performances, as well as a message of salvation. The Lefevre Quartet aims to be the best they can be while bringing quality performances, as well as consistency, and delivering the Gospel in a professional manner. While attending one of their performances, one can expect a welcoming nature that invites people into a relationship with the group. The group also keeps the crowd entertained by working in a few laughs into their performances. “You can expect us to want to develop lifelong relationships with our listeners. They become friends to us,” Mike says. “You can expect to get a lot of laughter from a performance.” The quartet was invited by Coteau Baptist Church in Houma to play for a revival at the local church. The group will have their time on stage, but the event will also consist of a preacher and some additional guest speakers. “We will be sharing many positive messages, as well as trying to create a positive Christian environment for everyone,” Mike explains. “The event is open to the public. All denominations are welcome, even if it is a Baptist church. We welcome everyone to come and listen to the Gospel, as well as to laugh and have a good time.”

ver the past few years, late September in downtown Houma has been taken over by the Best of the Bayou Music Festival. And while that fact remains the same, there have been a few changes made to our area’s premiere music event. “We have various changes to the festival this year. We have moved from a Saturday-Sunday format to a Friday night and Saturday format,” Katie Portier, the festival’s marketing chair, says. “People told us they preferred the night-time vibe of a music fest so we wanted to accommodate that.” Festival Chairman Tim McNabb echoes that sentiment. “This festival showcases that Houma has a lot to offer,” he says. “We’ve got awesome talented bands that will play non-stop now on a Friday night and Saturday.” This year’s lineup consists of local and regional acts that vary in genres,
ensuring that festival goers will find music to their taste. The festival is headlined by nationally-known rockers 38 Special and Cowboy Mouth, and the rest of the lineup is rounded out by Louisiana’s LeRoux, Flow Tribe, Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas, Sweet Cecilia, Ayo, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Robin Barnes + the Fiya Birds, Jordan Anderson Band, Jonathon Boogie Long, Josh Garrett Band, Cory Ledet and His Zydeco Band, Jak Locke, Jeff McCarty, and Gregg Martinez and the Delta Kings Swamp Pop Revue featuring GG Shinn and TK Hulin. Another change to the festival is the incorporation of an admission fee. However, part of the proceeds will be used to help provide necessary assistance to the local high school arts. “In an effort to sustain our festival for years to come, we are charging an admission fee,” Katie explains.

We are very excited that a portion of our proceeds will be used as grants for local high school departments. It is so important to nurture the next generation of young musicians. We hope that the more the festival grows, the more we can give back to students.” While entertaining musical acts are the main attraction for the Best of the
Bayou Music Festival, delicious Cajun cuisine, unique handmade arts and crafts, and fun for the little ones help the festival to stand out. “While we pride ourselves on being a true music festival, we do have a lot of other great attractions at the festival,” Katie says. “We’ll have arts and crafts vendors, a Kids Korner for children benefitting KIM Playhouse Museum, a classic car show on Saturday, a Cultural Center put on by members of the United

The Best of the Bayou Music Festival has tons to offer to Houma and its surrounding areas. The sounds of music and the aromas of delicious
food will soon fill the air of downtown Houma, and that in itself is something to looking forward. “Plain and simple – it’s a fun festival celebrating all we have to offer on the bayou. It’s a great place for families to come enjoy the day,” Katie says. “We are very excited about the regional and local talent we have playing at the festival, and of course our headliner 38 Special. There is really something for everyone.”

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES by Jonah Giroir Photos via Rotten Tomatoes
The LEGO Ninjago Movie
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
S
ummer has come to a close and the kids are back in school. It was definitely a fun time at the movies this summer, with blockbusters like Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, War for the Planet of the Apes and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 taking their places as some of my favorite movies this year. As we move into the latter months, we’ll be greeted with more horror movies, some Oscar contenders and a few big films in November and December that I’m really excited to talk about. However, we must start with September first. Speaking of horror, the month kicks off with IT (Sept. 8). This film is an adaptation of the 1986 Stephen King novel that follows a group of kids as they encounter Pennywise, a shapeshifter whose favorite form is that of a sadistic clown. Fans of the original IT are likely to be clamoring to see this movie, and the trailers look like it will deliver plenty chills and thrills.
If horror is not your thing, Home Again (Sept. 8) also hits theaters this weekend. Starring Reese Whitherspoon, this romantic comedy follows Alice Kinney as she moves home to Los Angeles with her two young daughters following her divorce. Alice opens her guest house to three aspiring filmmakers, but her unlikely new family and new romance comes to a screeching halt when her ex-husband shows up. The following weekend features American Assassin, Brad’s Status, Mother! and All I See Is You (Sept. 15). American Assassin showcases the rise of Mitch Rapp, a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley. The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy to investigate a string of what seems to be random attacks on military and civilian targets. Brad’s Status takes viewers through the life of Brad Sloan (Ben Stiller)

as he accompanies his college bound son to the East Coast. However, this trip causes Brad to question his life as he begins comparing himself to his four college friends: a Hollywood bigshot, a hedge fund founder, a tech entrepreneur and a political pundit and bestselling author. Circumstances force Brad to reconnect with these friends, causing him to ponder whether he has really failed or is, in some ways at least, the most successful. Mother! centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when unexpected guests show up at their home and disrupt their peaceful existence. The star-studded cast is led by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. Finally, All I See Is You stars Blake Lively as a blind woman who’s dependent on her husband to navigate through her life. Following a surgery that restores her sight, the couple’s life and relationship is changed in a multitude of ways. Kingsman: The Golden Circle,
Battle of the Sexes
JOIN US AT
Stronger, The LEGO Ninjago Movie and Battle of the Sexes (Sept. 22) make up the next weekend’s slate. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is my most anticipated movie for the month as it is the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service, a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed in 2014. With a new foe arising, the Kingsman must unite with a United States spy organization, the Statesman, to save the world. Stronger tells the true story of Jeff Bauman, an ordinary man who captured the hearts of Boston and the rest of the world to become a symbol of hope following the 2013 Boston Marathon. Jeff’s personal account follows his encounters with the bomber and losing his legs, but not losing his spirit. The LEGO Ninjago Movie takes everyone back into the LEGO world. This time, the battle for Ninjago City calls to action young Master Builder Lloyd, the Green Ninja, to defeat evil warlord Garmadon. Expect tons of actions and more of the humor found in The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie. Battle of the Sexes puts the audience right in the middle of the electrifying 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). The match was the most watched televised sports event of all time and sparked a global conversation on gender equality. The month closes out with Flatliners and American Made (Sept. 29). Flatliners displays a group of medical students that subject themselves to neardeath experiences to see if anything lies beyond death. The members of the group are then revisited by physical manifestations of childhood sins, but they cannot discern whether what they are facing is real or hallucination. American Made stars Tom Cruise as TWA pilot Barry Seal. In this true story, Barry is recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America. He finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history.

DYING TO MEET YOU KATE KLISE
by Katina Gaudet, South Lafourche Area Librarian
“T
he following is a collection of actual letters and documents written over the course of one summer and pertaining to the strange events that took place in a certain house located at 43 Old Cemetery Road in an otherwise quiet town called Ghastly, Illinois.” Intriguing, right? How could you not want to read something that begins with this? I read this children’s series, Kate Klise’s 43 Old Cemetery Road, a while back, and when shopping for Easter gifts a few months ago for a particular 11-year old who doesn’t seem as interested in reading as she once was, I thought back to it. I bought the first book in the series Dying to Meet You, among other assorted gifts, for said 11year old and waited. Without prompting, one day a few weeks later I got, “I read that book you
gave me.” It gets better…she liked it. The thing about this book (and this series) is that it’s great for children who, for whatever reason, might be a little reluctant to read. Here’s why. First, it’s an easy read. The narrative is relayed through a variety of formats, like advertisements, pages from the local newspaper The Ghastly Times, and drawings, all done by Klise’s sister, illustrator Sarah Klise. Mostly, though, the story develops through a series of letters (many of them short and simple) between the book’s interestingly named characters. There’s 11-year old Seymour Hope, whose paranormal researching parents bought the old Victorian mansion at 43 Old Cemetery Road because of its reputed ghost haunting. Failing to see said ghost, they no longer believe in
22 September 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide
ghosts, but their son Seymour does. In fact, his best friend is failed author and resident ghost Olive C. Spence, who has vowed to haunt her former home forever – or at least until her literary efforts are published, whichever comes first. Seymour and Olive are having a great time together after Seymour’s parents up and abandon him there to go to Europe to proclaim that ghosts do not exist. Then there’s children’s author Ignatius B. Grumply, who rounds out our three main characters when he rents the old house at 43 Old Cemetery Road. Another thing about this book: it’s funny and, ultimately, quite sweet. The plot of Dying to Meet You: Ignatius B. Grumply, the author of the Ghost Tamer series, hasn’t written anything in quite a while and rents the Victorian mansion in Ghastly for the summer to write the 13th book in
his series in the midst of a very long case of writers’ block. He thinks he’s alone – and wants to be – until he meets Seymour, who keeps talking about this ghost Olive with whom he shares the house. So there’s an old Victorian mansion inhabited by a child, a ghost, and now a grumpy children’s author who doesn’t like children and who writes about ghosts, but doesn’t believe in them. What’s the best that can happen? Perhaps the start of a new family, however unconventional. Dying to Meet You is the first in Kate Klise’s 43 Old Cemetery Road Series, which now includes seven books for children. It’s an easy and entertaining read and well worth a child putting down his or her gadget of choice for a while.
