Rougarou Fest Returns It’s the most wonderful time of year… no, Christmas isn’t coming early.
Rougarou Fest, the annual family-friendly spooktacular, is back to provide enough thrills and chills to make kids and adults alike happily usher in fall. The two-day event, set for Oct. 22-23 in downtown Houma, is set up much like a traditional festival, but what is offered is anything but the same ol’ same ol’. A blessing of the grounds and national anthem kick things off at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by back-to-back live music stretching through the festival’s two days from some of the best local artists. While the sounds of artists like Sheauxdown, The Josh Garrett Band and more fill the air, attendees can enjoy delicious Cajun eats and drinks, themed children’s activities like the Cypress Knee Ring Toss, and more from a host of vendors. Don’t forget to show off your scariest or most creative getup during the costume contest and if you hang around long enough, you just might catch a glimpse of this year’s enchanting Rougarou Queen. It’s not just fun and games, either. It’s also a way to give back to the local community. The festival is the primary fundraiser for the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a non-profit organization committed to revolutionizing how people think about and educate others on Louisiana’s precious coastline. Flip the page to find Gumbo’s top 5 must-experience moments of this year’s spooktacular celebration.
Our Top 5 Don’t-Miss Moments of Rougarou Fest
1. Show Us Your Stuff
Rougarou Fest organizers are amping up the always-popular costume contest for this year’s festivities. At 5 p.m. Saturday, the undead and pint-sized princesses converge on the steps of the courthouse to show off their looks and vie for a prize. Categories have expanded to feature Pets, Most Creative, Funniest, Scariest, Movie Characters, two kid’s categories separated by age, and Best Overall.
3. Rising Star
This years music lineup features some of the best homegrown talent around. Among the musicians is Payton Smith, a Houma native who has since found his stride among the elite of Music City. At age 8, he began playing guitar and by 14, Payton scored his first publishing deal. These days, you can find him co-writing alongside some of the best in the business, performing at iconic spots like The Bluebird Cafe, and on Sunday at 11 a.m., he’ll take the stage right here in downtown Houma.
2. The Bayou Enchantress
This year, thanks to Houma Float Rentals, the Rougarou Queen, Tammie Swanner, will greet festival attendees on her very own float. Don’t miss your chance to catch a glimpse of the lady of the hour during the Krewe Ga Rou Parade Saturday at 7 p.m.
4. Something to Remember Us By
Don’t forget to snag a commemorative poster from this year’s event while you’re meandering around the festival grounds. This year’s creation was crafted by Joe Badon,a Slidell-based artist whose signature style is reminiscent of vintage comic books. Want a personalized copy to display at home or in your office? Joe will be on-hand to sign prints throughout the weekend.
5. The Good Stuff
Thibodaux-based Mudbug Brewery again lends its craftsmanship to this year’s drink lineup. The brewery has created Pumpkin Spice Porter, a dark beer tinged with spices like clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Not a beer drinker? Bloody Marys and Rougaroux rum cocktails are also on the menu.

Petit Theatre de Terrebonne is switching things up a little from October 14-16. The group presents “The Exonerated” directed by Stephanie Kenney-Gomez on the top floor of HTV in downtown Houma instead of at their usual building. The move is all strategy - a way to offer theatre goers a little something extra in addition to this season’s lineup. “This is something that’s been in the works for a couple years now,” Stephanie explains of the play and the new location. “We wanted to offer the community offseason offerings, a couple of shows a year that were not a part of our regular season membership.” The local production of “The Exonerated”, a 2002 play by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, tells the true stories of six
wrongfully convicted inmates: Delbert Tibbs (Dana Coleman), Sunny Jacobs (Raegan Creppell), Gary Gauger (Jonathan Foret), David Keaton (Keith Craft), Kerry Max Cook (Michael James), and Robert Earl Hayes (Kerry Grant). Among the stories are those convicted of robbery and murder, another convicted of killing police officers, despite a confession from another man. The cast also includes Georgia Hayes (Jernae Cyrise Bolden), Sue Gauger/Sandra (Shannon Bella) and male ensemble members (Scott Courville and David Lebouef), all of whom create a riveting portrayal of life behind bars. “The story leads up to how they got arrested, through their trials, what happened to them in prison, and what’s happened since they’ve been exoner-

ated and freed,” Stephanie says of the unique and powerful piece. This production differs from a light, fluffy type of theater, she explains. The play takes place over a 90-minute stretch and reels the audience in with its thought provoking content and first-person narrative. “It hits you and you won’t believe what you hear,” she says.

hibodaux Playhouse kicks off its 57th season with an award-winning stage comedy, “Unnecessary Farce”. Directed by Eric Pellegrin with Executive Producer Erica Annis and Stage Manager Andrea Cheramie Stentz, “Unnecessary Farce” follows the wild events and stories of Eric Sheridan (Seth Pontiff), Billie Dwyer (Brittny Feazel), Karen Brown (Rhea Grigsby), Mayor Meekly (Matthew Pellegrin), Agent Frank (Chance Simoncelli), Todd Damon (Damon Stentz), and Mary Meekly (Heather Foret). The story is a mash up of a classic farce and a contemporary American plot. Located at a cheap motel, an embezzling mayor is set to meet up with his female accountant in one room, while two undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on videotape from the room next door. All of this leads to confusion as to who’s in which room, who’s being videotaped, who’s taken the money, who’s hired a hit man, and why the accountant keeps taking off her clothes.

HOCUS POCUS
“The Illusionists – Live from Broadway” takes audiences on an unbelievable journey of sophisticated magic. Seven thrilling illusionists change the way enthusiasts look at the mind-blowing talent with this amazing stage show highlighted by individual performances from The Inventor, The Weapon Master, The Deductionist, The Manipulation, The Trickster, The Escapologist, and The Anti-Conjuror. From mind-reading to levitation, close-up card magic, and a daring water escape, audiences are in for what can only be described as a show you have to see to believe. Magician and illusionist Dan Sperry takes on the persona of The Anti-Conjuror, combining the art of the talent with a dose of macabre to leave audiences shocked and intrigued. For fans of “America’s Got Talent,” Dan Sperry is not a new name. His gruesome brand of magic earned him an allegiance of fans during season five of the show, propelling him to

establishing his niche for the freaky and shocking. Dan first became interested in magic when his grandparents took him to see a David Copperfield show when he was 4 years old. Not exactly sure what he was going to see considering he had only seen magic before at birthday parties and libraries, Copperfield’s show left a lasting impression on young Dan. “He opened his show with this illusion where he gets chained to a table and he had to pick the locks before this spinning saw blade comes down and cuts him in half,” Dan recalls. “The premise of the trick is that it goes wrong and we think we see him get cut in half. Adults understand its a very amazing illusion, but a 4-year-old kid like me thought it was real. I freaked out. I was the obnoxious kid in the theater reacting loudly to this. We had to leave the show because I was just freaked out. I never saw him get put back together.”
To help him understand what he had just witnessed, Dan was given toy magic kits, which jumpstarted what is now a passion. He began reading books about magic and studying classic illusions. After outgrowing performances at birthday parties and family gatherings, he started opening at clubs for DJs and music acts, an environment that allowed him to explore the darker side of his acts. “When I started doing things outside of birthday parties, like opening for DJs or bands, or doing goth and rock clubs…I just started doing it like me, with how I dressed and looked,” he explains. “I needed a title or word that described what I did that didn't say magician or illusionist because some of these places that I’d go in, people would be like ‘Oh, there’s a magician here tonight, we’re not watching that. Let’s wait to go in until the band starts.’” Dan came up with the name The Anti-Conjuror by accident, searching for something that sounded cool.

He began using it as a title instead of titles like master illusionist in an effort to draw in those potential audiences looking for more thrilling than a library magician. “I think people like being shocked and little scared, probably for the same reason that haunted houses are so popular and ‘chick-flick’ houses are not a thing,” Dan says of the popularity of his brand of magic. “It’s a way to play make believe.” Dan’s magic took off after his appearance on “America’s Got Talent,” becoming one of the most YouTubed performances. His painted face and grossly mesmerizing illusions shocked audiences, but it also left them wanting more. Viewers loved it so much, in fact, that one week after his first appearance aired, Dan was one of the top ten most Googled people. After his stint on the show, Dan began touring the country on his own show, earning multiple awards and honors, and appearing on several TV shows. This success eventually led Dan to “The Illusionists”. The production began in 2012, opening at the Sydney Opera House. The show has since gone through several
renditions and cast members, but Dan remains the only performer to headline every major version. “The Illusionists – Live from Broadway” has found great success as the world’s best-selling touring magic show. The current North American tour brings some of the best in the business through more than 50 cities, including New Orleans and a onenight stop in Lafayette in 2017. What makes the show so well-received, Dan says, is its ability to immerse audiences in a world that showcases the complex layers of the talent, making it completely spellbinding. “The secret to the success of the show…sure we are all good magicians, and that’s important… but the different stuff that everyone does makes the show so unique,” he explains. “All of the guys that are in or have been in the show, they show how magic can be performed in different ways. The diversity allows for something different, something for everybody. You're not going to see the same kind of thing twice.”

ite of the Arts, a nearly 20-year Nicholls State University tradition, is getting an intriguing facelift for this year’s event. Now known as Halloween Bite Night, the event transforms one of the most historic homes in Bayou Country, Ducros Plantation, into the backdrop for an event that is sure to fright and delight. In an effort to refresh their fundraising efforts, the university’s Chef John Folse Culinary Institute reimagined the Bite of the Arts event as more of a costume party that still celebrates great food. According to Chef John Kozar, the institute’s department head and assistant professor, the night doesn’t end with the delicious food, however. The event also boasts silent and live auction items, a dance floor, bars, a costume contest, and live music by Soul Survivors. Chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois, executive chef of Blue Smoke in New York City, Thibodaux native and 2006 Chef John Folse Culinary Institute graduate, is also set to attend, curating the menu guests will enjoy. He says he aims to capture the Louisiana plantation south in the food he is set to present at the event. “I’m doing a lot of research into old cookbooks, specifically focused on south Louisiana and those times of plantation periods, to inspire me to do different things with that. I’m trying to tie in where we’re at, where I’m from, and the

food that we like to cook,” he explains. Because he was unable to attend last year’s event, Chef Bourgeois says he is excited to have such an integral part in this year’s festivities and come back home. “For me, it’s an opportunity to give back to the school and community,” he says. “I’m hoping that people remember this event and the food we cook as fondly as I remember my time at Nicholls and the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute. It’s also an opportunity to reconnect with some people that I haven’t seen, reconnect with South Louisiana, and to show my appreciation through cooking for the people that have taught me and fed me over the years.” Chef Bourgeois will not be alone in cooking for the event, either. He will work side-by-side with the institute’s culinary students, from Thursday through the end of the event. In addition to food preparation and cooking, students will also take part in logistical tasks and bartending. Their efforts will not go unnoticed as money for the event goes toward paying off the loan for the new culinary building which opened in 2015, tuition for three students to attend the Paul Bocuse Institute in France over the summer, scholarships, and emergency equipment. With Halloween Bite Night, Nicholls State University and Chef John Folse Culinary Institute look to capture a festive atmosphere that embodies the enchantment of Halloween. The idea, Chef Kozar explains, is to offer attendees an entertaining night out while providing them an avenue to support a great cause. “I think there are lots of people around here that love Halloween, and I don’t think there’s a venue that takes care of that audience,” he says. “To me, it’s like Mardi Gras in the fall and that’s the atmosphere that we want to have. We’re going to have a party, and we’re going to be south Louisiana with great food, great music, and some stuff to drink too.”

Vegan-friendly food selections are also served to attendees offering a healthy sampling of all that encompasses the healthy living approach. “We hope that we are planting the best seeds by being the healthiest, happiest examples,” Leah says of festival plans. “We want people to want to know what the secret is.”

Adopt Me! PRESENTED BY
Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month
E
ach year, an estimated 3-4 million animals waiting in shelters for someone to give them a safe, loving home never find a hero to adopt them. If you are thinking about getting a dog, consider adopting one from your local shelter or rescue group. The shelter is a great place to find your next furry friend, with dogs of every size, shape and age desperate for a little TLC.
Ways to Celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month • ADOPT FROM A SHELTER OR RESCUE GROUP: If you and your family are ready to open your heart and home to a new dog, adoption is the best way to go. Consider your lifestyle and choose a friend that fits in. If you are active, a young, energetic pup might be the perfect fit. Older dogs may enjoy a quieter lifestyle. Adopt the one that works for you. • SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR DOG: Help control the overpopulation of animals in shelters by spaying or neutering your pet. Spayed and neutered animals have been shown to lead longer, healthier lives. • ID YOUR PET: Identification
can be a tag with your name and number, a microchip or both. Only 15-20 percent of dogs that are turned into shelters are reunited with their owners because
workers don’t know from where the little guy comes from. Help ensure that if Fido gets lost, he can be found and returned. • SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHELTER: Shelters are often in need of donations of your time or supplies like food, leashes, towels and beds. Even a monetary donation can be a way to lend a hand. • SHARE AWAY: Many
shelters and rescue groups utilize social media to get the faces of their pets out there. Help by sharing the photos with your friends and family. Even if you can’t adopt, you can still make a difference in the life of a shelter dog by donating to those that take in animals in need or by volunteering your time to give these furry friends the attention and care they deserve.

MY BEST FRIEND’S EXORCISM
LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES
BY BRIGID LABORIE, TERREBONNE PARISH LIBRARY NORTH BRANCH MANAGER
O
BY GRADY HENDRIX
G
rady Hendrix, author of 2014’s IKEA themed horror-comedy “Horrorstör”, has taken another step into the world of quirky, fun, and scary with “My Best Friend’s Exorcism”. 1980s high schoolers Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since Abby’s tenth birthday, when their appreciation of all things nerdy, strange and pop culture brought them together to gush over “E.T.” at the roller rink. But shortly after the start of the new school year, after a night of partying in the woods, Gretchen goes missing for hours. She is later found shaken and confused, but unharmed. After the incident, Abby starts to notice some alarming changes in Gretchen. Her upbeat and affable best friend starts to go through strange mood swings. Sometimes she cries and begs for help, and other times she plays cruel pranks, almost always making Abby her target and humiliating her in the process. Soon Gretchen’s cold-blooded manipulation begins to extend to truly dangerous acts against Abby and their friends, and Gretchen’s parents blame Abby for their daughter’s strange behavior. When a group of evangelical body-
builders target Gretchen at a school assembly, claiming that she has a demonic presence attached to her, Abby knows she has to take a stand. Grady Hendrix has a knack for creating literary mash-ups of popular themes, and this book is no exception. This novel is a coming of age story about friendship, about growing together and growing apart, and about how far someone will go to help someone they love. It’s a story of friendship, with a touch of demonic possession to keep it strange and interesting. Though its protagonists are both teenagers, this isn’t a young adult novel. Some of the scenes of demonic possession are intense, and, while the idea of a demonically possessed teenage girl growing up in the ‘80s is certainly a kooky concept, the book isn’t straightforward in its humor. The focus remains on the relationship between the two girls; the possession serves as a hurdle for what’s at the heart of the narrative: Abby’s dedication to her best friend. The book does a great job of recreating the 1980s in a way that isn’t forced or overdone, so it will certainly drum up some nostalgia for those who lived through those days.

BY JONAH GIROIR
ctober is a strange time of year for movies. Summer blockbusters have long gone, and big movies await in November and December for families to enjoy during the holiday season. Typically, Oscar contenders are released, along with some horror movies to please the ghosts and ghouls that love Halloween. So let’s dive in and see what we can find playing on the big screen this month. The month kicks off with “The Girl on the Train” (Oct. 7), a mystery/suspense film based on the Paula Hawkins book of the same name. It follows Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) as she deals with a recent divorce, admires a seemingly perfect couple on her morning commute, and witnesses a shocking development occur at the couple’s house. If the suspense is anything like 2014’s “Gone Girl”, this movie is sure to provide a tense and thought-provoking experience.
Following that, we get back-to-back weeks of action releases with “The Accountant” (Oct. 14) and “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” (Oct. 21). “The Accountant” stars Ben Affleck as an accountant moonlighting as a hit man. He is supported by a strong cast with Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, and breakout star Jon Bernthal of “The Walking Dead” and season 2
of “Daredevil”. If you’re looking for a thought-provoking action thriller, this should provide you with just that. “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”, the follow-up to 2012’s “Jack Reacher”, stars Tom Cruise as the titular character, an ex-Army investigator, in a sequel to a movie that I went into with zero expectations and came out of with a good experience. With recent movies like “Edge of Tomorrow” (if you haven’t seen it, watch it now) and his work in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, it is clear that Cruise excels in action flicks. Hopefully we can add this one to the list in the future. Also keep an eye out for some familiar scenery as much of the film was shot in New Orleans. The middle of October also provides us with back-to-back weeks of comedy in the form of “Kevin Hart: What Now?” (Oct. 14) and “Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween” (Oct. 21). This Kevin Hart movie is actually one of his standup specials, which is a good thing. I personally find Kevin Hart is at his best doing his comedy routine compared to his feature film roles. His movies are funny, but his standup specials are hilarious. As for “Madea”, this hasn’t been a franchise that I have gotten into, but I know a lot of people that find the movies hysterical. Be sure to watch it if you’re a fan of all the previous renderings of this character. Just in time for Halloween, the month closes out with “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (Oct. 21). Horror has seen rather successful numbers throughout the year, and critically, there have been a few standouts. Hopefully, despite low critical expectations, this one can continue that trend. “Ouija: Origin of Evil” follows 2014’s “Ouija”, a movie that did not do well critically. The franchise, based on the infamous board, is sure to provide a fair amount of jump scares and otherworldly activity.
