F

rom a rag-tag group of guys who were sweating it five years ago, hoping people would show up and share in their love of beer, to a full festival featuring 25 breweries and 30 home brewers, Bayou Beer Fest was founded on one idea: teach people about beer. The idea to host a beer festival in Houma basically began in a family barn on Bayou Black. Neighbors Joel Ohmer and Jim Barrett gathered weekly with their families to enjoy dinner and a few drinks. Abita Brewing was gaining in popularity at that time with their craft beers and the gentlemen knew this was a hobby they wanted to pursue. They attended NOLA On Tap, a beer festival in New Orleans, along with Gabe Lasseigne and left the festival with the promise that they would bring this type of event to Houma. Joel was already on the move, blogging for Bayou Beer Society, advocating for better beers in our area. It was through this organization that they filed for and received their 501c3 as an educational foundation and a public charity. The board of directors for Bayou Beer Society is made up of Joel, Jim, Gabe, Willie Rollins, Bill Sieben, Dena Naquin, Chris Naquin, Mark Thibodeaux, Nikki Thibodeaux, Racquel Parfait and Mike LeBlanc. “We were a bunch of guys that got together, realized we love beer and figured we can throw a festival,” explains Joel. “Then we had to decide what to do with the money. It was a natural fit to donate to Veterans causes. Our two historic benefactors are the Veterans Shelter and the Louisiana Military Family Assistance Fund.” Bayou Beer Fest is a true culinary experience, as all good beer is. The festival is about taste, about taking your taste buds to places you never imagined beer could take them. The festival will feature about 300 beers, ciders, and meads to sample. The goal is to educate people,

helping them to discover what they like. With the breweries, some will bring their flagship brews. The savvy ones will bring a specialty brew to help boost their brewery and get the public’s attention. Parish Brewing served the now popular beer Ghost in the Machine last year at Beer Fest. It’s now a top seller for the company and is often hard to find. Bayou Beer Fest is excited about the new breweries joining this year. They are welcoming Urban South, Wayward Owl, Louisiana Purchase, Southern Craft and Chandeleur Island. Most of these breweries have participated as home brewers in years past and the festival is excited to have them back as professionals. “We showcase the breweries that have popped up in Louisiana,” explained Jim. “I think six of this year’s breweries were at one point home brewers at our festival, and are now in the professional brewing business. It’s changed the beer market here significantly. You can get more choices at the stores and at area restaurants.” Also new to the festival this year is the app Untappd. Using Untappd, participants will be able to check in to the festival and rate the beers being served. Like Facebook for beer, this app allows users to track with they’ve consumed. Bayou Beer Fest is an Untappd verified event. The menu will be available on the app. It can even notify you when a new keg is tapped at a certain tent. The festival does offer a non-drinking ticket for your designated driver to be able to enter and enjoy the food and music. Cannata’s will be serving delicious food and there will be live musical entertainment by Nonc Nu and Da Wild Matous and Nathan Plumber and Steady Steppin!

FROM BRIEUX CARRÉ AND SPIGOT’S BREW PUB The Bayou Beer Fest title sponsors are showcasing something a little different this year! Brieux CarrĂŠ in New Orleans and Spigot’s Brew Pub in Houma will be brewing a special collaboration ale. The imperial breakfast stout features brown sugar from Thibodaux and coffee that is roasted and ground in New Orleans. The ale will be brewed in small batches using the same recipe and ingredients, but using each brewery’s different equipment and brewing processes. “It going to be very exciting to have the same recipe offered side by side at the festival,â€? says Jim Barrett, member of the board of directors for Bayou Beer Fest. “Even though the same recipe is used, each small batch will likely have a different taste.â€? The brew will be +10% ABV and available under the title sponsors’ tent only at Bayou Beer Fest.

MUDBUG BREWERY: The Thibodaux-based brewery

boasts five flagship beers – three ales, a stout and a pilsner – that taste as great as being Cajun feels.

BAYOU TECHE BREWING: The Arnaudville brewery’s

mission was to craft beer that paired perfectly with Cajun cuisine. One turned into 11 with names reflecting the state’s French heritage.

CRYING EAGLE BREWING COMPANY: The Lake

Charles brewery, named for the rough translation of an Atakapa Indian chief name known for his unique battle cry, pours brews with personality: Calcasieu Common, The Chuck, and Ready to Mingle.

SOUTHERN CRAFT BREWING COMPANY: After no-

ticing how far behind Baton Rouge was in the craft beer scene, two friends, Wes Hedges and Joe Picou, decided to build their own brew dreams from the ground up. Two signature pours and two seasonal sips now stand on the menu.

ABITA: The OG of Louisiana brewing is set to serve up some of its stand-out sips to attendees. The brewery boasts 30+ selections, including sodas. GREAT RAFT: The Shreveport-based brewery is dedicated to making creative beer that push the boundries while bringing authentic, quality ingredients to the table. BROKEN WHEEL BREWERY: The boys behind this

T

he best part of beer fest is of course, the beer! This year’s event features 25 breweries pouring around 300 different brews. The vast majority of participants are Louisiana breweries, with a few stellar exceptions from Texas and Mississippi. If there’s one thing they have in common, it’s their love for what they do. Their passion for beer is evident in the carefully selected brews they choose to serve at beer fest. Attendees will be able to try a flagship brew or two, several seasonal items and a few new beers that were small batch brewed especially for this event. Another huge part of Beer Fest is the home brewers. This group always has the longest lines forming around their tent, awaiting the next specialty keg to be tapped. The home brewers will also be competing for the people’s choice award. You never know what the home brewers will be serving; past offerings have included beer, cider and meads.

Marksville brewery pay homage to the town’s settlement with its name and rich culture in its pours. Among its lineup are ales, a stout, and a German Schwarzbier.

PARISH BREWING CO.: You’d be hardpressed to find

a craft beer lover who hasn’t tasted a Parish beer. Located in Broussard, the brewery prides itself on always fresh sips, never mingled with preservatives.

COVINGTON BREWHOUSE: This Northshore establishment puts passion and love into every pour. Using only the finest ingredients, you won’t want to miss one of Covington’s five unique flagship beers. CAJUN BREWING: Lafayette’s premier brewery was founded by a homebrewer and has since blossomed into a major player in the game. Cajun Wit, a citrusy ale, and Bayou Brunette, a malty delight, are the brewery’s current mainstays. OLD RAIL BREWING COMPANY: This popular Man-

deville brew pub declares itself to be one of Louisiana’s premier beer drinking destinations. Its 13 taps currently feature creative brews like Cow Catcher Chocolate Milk Stout, Gose by Rail, Gina and Tonic Gose, and Picturesque Pilsner.

GNARLEY BARLEY BREWING COMPANY: What began as a homebrewing experiment in the garage of Zac and Cari Caramonta is now a 10,500 square foot facility in Hammond, La. A true testament to following your passion, this brewery currently produces six amazing and wildly diverse beers. NOLA BREWING COMPANY: The New Orleans Lager

and Ale Brewing Company, more commonly known as NOLA Brewing, was the first brewery to open to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina forced Dixie Beer to move out-of-state. Founded by Navy veteran Kirk Coco, this popular brewery never loses sight of it why it is in existence: for the beer.

CHAFUNKTA BREWING COMPANY: Born from Josh

and Jamie Erickson’s shared passion for brewing beer, this family run brewery focuses on small batch brewing. Located in Mandeville, La., Chafunkta Brewing produces four flagship brews including an Imperial IPA and a Robust Porter.

URBAN SOUTH BREWERY: After spending a year

in Europe, founder Jacob Landry realized what was missing from the mass-produced beer he was accustomed to drinking, compared to the Belgium ales and German lagers he was enjoying. This New Orleans brewery located on Tchoupitoulas is working hard to re-establish the city as the beer capitol of the South.

ers Andy and Lindsey Turcotte opened the doors to their Ponchatoula brewery earlier this year. The brewery currently features seven delightful brews.

KARBACH BREWING COMPANY: Proudly brewed in Texas, this brewery is all about one thing: beer. Ok, maybe two…Fun! Karback produces eight mainstays and some entertaining seasonal specialties such as Mother in Lager and Yule Shoot Your Eye Out. The brewery has 12 year round beers, including the popular Fancy Lawnmower, Weedwacker and Santos. CHANDELEUR ISLAND BREWING COMPANY: Started by

Cammack and Cain Roberds, this microbrewery is located in historic downtown Gulfport, Ms. Their goal is to create excellent ales using the finest and freshest of local ingredients.

fter making the decision to host a beer festival, the founders knew immediately where the funds raised should go. Board member Jim Barrett and his son are both veterans, as is board member Joel Ohmer’s father. This is their way of honoring our soldiers who sacrifice so much. Bayou Beer Fest donates a portion of the festival’s proceeds to the Terrebonne Veterans Shelter and to the Louisiana Military Assistance Fund. It was very important to the board that the money raised stayed local and helped those in our community that gave so much to their country. Established in 2010 by Roger Songe, a local Vietnam veteran, the Terrebonne Parish Veterans Shelter provides housing and support for up to four veterans at a time. The non-profit shelter was established to provide extra support to the veteran heroes in our community. Run with a staff of volunteers, the Terrebonne Veterans Shelter is solely funded by donations, under the direction of CJ Trahan. The shelter provides every day essentials to veterans in need such as meals, linens, a bed and toiletries. The volunteers also assist occupants in obtaining Veterans Affairs benefits, jobs, medical care and long-term housing, with the goal being to help the veterans in getting back on their feet.

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? Why pour your beer and not slurp it out of the can or bottle? Without pouring the beer, you pass up the most sensuous part of drinking beer, the aroma. I will often pour a beer and smell it three, maybe four times before I even take a sip. The other thing that the pour does is release the carbonation from the product. The carbonation can cause bloat and possibly give you a headache as the carbonation releases in your stomach and then seems to go straight to your head. This is known as snapping the beer.

BEER

SHEET

WHAT AM I ORDERING? BY BILLY SIMMONS, BUQUET DISTRIBUTING

S

o, how many types of beers are out there? Surprisingly, there are technically only two types of beer, ales and lagers. Ales and lagers are defined by what type of yeast is used during fermentation. Ales are made with top fermenting yeast and lagers are made with bottom fermenting yeast. The most popular style of ale right now is India Pale Ale or an IPA. These by rule are usually very hop pronounced. You can typically find the aroma of pine and or grapefruit when sniffing the beer. The taste can be bitter which is used as a balance to the sweet malts that are used when brewing the beer. Goose Island IPA is an example of an IPA. This hop-heavy beer is golden in color, has a fruity aroma that is quite distinct and a long hop finish. Ales cover a wide path of styles which many are more familiar with, including brown ales, pale ales, porters, stouts, Belgian and wheat beers. Brewers are doing really fantastic things to these beers like ageing them in wine and whiskey barrels so the beer will take on some of the characteristics of the used barrel. A new upcoming trend in brewing right now is using spontaneous fermentation, which is a process that exposes the beer to wild bacteria and yeast. This creates a sour kind of taste in the beer, which when done right, creates an awesome beer. Look for American sours, Flanders Red Ales and Belgian Gueuze. Lagers are harder to produce due to the fact that the yeast settles at the bottom of the fermentation tank. This yeast also needs to be kept cooler and tends to ferment much slower. Budweiser is an example of a lager. The beech wood chips you hear so much about are not used for flavor, but as a place for the yeast to set up house to do their job of turning simple sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Other styles of lagers to look for include pale lagers, pilsners, dark lagers, and German-style bock beers.

LETS GO TO THE MOVIES // BY DREW MILLER

M

any films released in the late fall hope to make a push for the Academy Awards. Studios put out what is known as their “Oscar bait.” They will premiere historical dramas such as Darkest Hour (Nov. 22) and The Current War (Nov. 24) or movies with an ensemble cast such as Last Flag Flying (Nov. 3) and Murder on the Orient Express (Nov. 10), hoping to catch the eye of Academy voters. Although all of the Oscar-worthy hopefuls look to receive critical success, the winners of the box office in the month of November will be Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures with their releases of Thor: Ragnarok (Nov. 3) and Justice League (Nov. 17), respectively. The superhero teams from each movie prepare to battle for the crown of the November box office. The first to make its mark is the 17th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (started in 2008 with Iron Man), Thor: Ragnarok. The movie is directed by newcomer to the MCU,

Taika Waititi (Moana, What We Do in the Shadows), and features returning characters to the series such as Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and Heimdall (Idris Elba). New to the Thor series but not the MCU, Bruce Banner aka the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) will team up to fight along-side his Avengers comrade, although the two will at first be pitted against each other in a gladiatorial duel on the Planet of Sakaar. The two must escape their imprisonment on Sakaar and save Thor’s home world of Asgard. This will be a difficult task for Thor and the Hulk as they will have to join forces with Thor’s infamous brother, Loki, to take on the goddess of death, Hela (Cate Blanchett). There is no question that Thor: Ragnarok is set to make a huge impact at the box office in the first weekend of November with a budget of $180 million. The film looks to be a critical hit as well with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% already. The official trailer

10 November 2017 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

for the movie, which has just over 45 million views on YouTube, shows the movie to be action packed, beautifully shot, and comedic, with the witty banter between the star characters of the film. Marvel looks to stand out in November before its rival, DC, tries to take their spotlight two weeks later. The DC Extended Universe strives to bounce back from two of their previous three movies, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. In spite of both movies receiving commercial success, they weren’t well liked by critics with Batman v Superman getting a 27% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and Suicide Squad acquiring a 26% score. Their latest film, Wonder Woman, poised them to get back in favor with critics with a score of 92%. Warner Bros. hired a director from the MCU, Josh Weeden (The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron), to write scenes for Justice League but he later took on the title of post-production director after the then director, Zack

Snyder (Batman v Superman, 300), left the project in May. Starting with the Man of Steel in 2013, this fifth installment of the DCEU will feature Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), months after the sacrifice of Superman that took place in the movie Batman v Superman. The pair will reach out to other iconic superheroes in DC, the Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborgn (Ray Fisher), and Aquaman (Jason Mamora), as they fight to stop an impending threat to Earth from the supervillain, Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds). The trailers for Justice League show it to be visually stunning, which is usually the case for a Zack Snyder film. The movie, while still showing a mostly serious tone, looks to have more comic relief than Batman v Superman and become more like its Marvel counterpart, Avengers. On November 17th, it’ll try to share some of the critical acclaim from the MCU.

With so many movies being available to stream via Netflix, Vudu, Amazon, etc. many good films are being overlooked; Shot Caller (74% Rotten Tomatoes score) is on that list. Game of Throne’s star, Nikolaj CosterWaldau, plays a white-collar, family man sentenced to prison for manslaughter after a fatal accident. His life takes a complete 180 degree turn after he is forced to join a gang in prison for his own survival. He finds out after serving his time that he still isn’t free by having to still carry out his duties as a member of brotherhood. Shot Caller is not a glamorous movie when it comes to cinematography and score, but the film still makes for an intriguing watch. It keeps the viewer interested with its nonlinear narrative and character development. Because it’s not glamorous and romanticized, Shot Caller gives the audience a harsh, real look at someone’s life that goes through the system. Similar Movie: End of Watch It’s more visually engaging and fast-paced than Shot Caller, but it still keeps that same authentic view of the law but from the perspective of police officers.

CHARLOTTE GAUBERT, LAFOURCHE AREA LIBRARIAN

THE INN AT ROSE HARBOR BY DEBBIE MACOMBER

W

e never know where life will lead us. In this heartwarming novel by Debbie Macomber, we find Jo Marie Rose experiencing love, heartache and healing. Jo Marie meets Paul. Theirs is a whirlwind romance and they are married within three months. Paul is in the military, is sent to Afghanistan but never returns. Unbeknownst to Jo Marie, Paul left a life insurance policy in her name. In the process of overcoming grief, she quits her job, purchases a bedand-breakfast and moves to the Pacific Northwest town of Cedar Cove for a fresh start. As Jo Marie settles into small town life, she discovers that running the Rose Harbor Inn is a dream come true. She has no idea of the surprises that are in store for her. Her first two customers come back to Cedar Cove after being away for many years. Joshua Weaver returns to care for his dying stepfather. The two of them never had a good relationship and Joshua left town after high school graduation. His only other visits were for the funerals of his mother and stepbrother. Abby Kincaid returns to attend her brother’s wedding. She left Cedar Cove and painful memories to begin a life elsewhere. After reconnecting with friends and family, Abby realizes that she can move on if she allows herself to. This touching story of lost love, renewed relationships, and happy endings will leave you with a thirst to read more of this Debbie Macomber series.
