MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET BY JONAH GIROIR

Le

Petit Theatre de Terrebonne joins the holiday spirit with their rendition of “Miracle on 34th Street.” The production, directed by Brittany Rogers Bourque, bears a strong similarity to the 1947 Christmas classic movie of the same name. “Our version of Miracle on 34th Street is almost exactly based off the original motion picture,” Brittany says. “We meet this man who is probably one of the best men that you’ll meet around Christmas time, but nobody really believes him, so it causes a big kerfuffle. Santa ends up on trial for sanity because nobody believes that he’s actually Santa.” In directing this production, Brittany is faced with leading a large cast in a very tight space. Le Petit Theatre translates to the “little theater” in English, and that rings true especially in this case. “It’s a very large cast, especially for Le Petit,” she explains. “I’m used to having large groups, but it’s definitely different because it’s a small space and

4 December 2016 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

we have a wide age range. It’s a challenge, but it’s been wonderful working with all of them. They all bring their own unique gifts to the table.” Within the cast, there are quite a few members making their debut on the Le Petit stage, the youngest just 4 years old, and even a few that are making their first appearance on a stage in general. And while they may be rookies to the stage, Brittany has confidence in them and says that they are “really shining” throughout the rehearsals. “This show is a beautiful, sweet Christmas show full of faith and believing, even a little love story, and it really brings the magic of the season. It gives you those nice warm fuzzies that you want for Christmas,” Brittany says. The cast of “Miracle on 34th Street” will take the stage of Le Petit Theatre from Dec. 9 - 18, with the show going dark Dec. 12. Tickets may be purchased by calling 985.876.4278 or sending an email to houmalittletheatre@gmail.com.

CHRISTMAS IN THE LAND OF OZ BY JONAH GIROIR

T

he children of the 2016 BayouKidz Fall Program at The Bayou Playhouse in Lockport take the stage from Dec. 2 – 18 for their production of “Christmas in the Land of Oz.” The production, directed by BayouKidz and Bayou Playhouse Production Director Camille Griffin, tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the Northwest becoming the Grinch of sorts as she steals Christmas from Munchkinland. All of your Oz favorites gather together to bring the yuletide holiday back. The production starts off in Kansas with Dorothy (Lexi Richmond) returning home from school to a stressed out Auntie Em (Charlie Scioneaux). Just two days before Christmas, Dorothy and Toto (Amelia Bergeron) decide to return to Oz to see if they can find a way to rekindle that Christmas spirit her family seems to be lacking. Upon arriving in Oz, Dorothy and Toto are greeted by the residents of Oz and the munchkins celebrating Christmas together for the first time in the history of Oz. However, the Wicked Witch of the Northwest (Hailey Thibodeaux), the last of her kind, arrives

on the scene to seek revenge for her deceased sisters. She executes her revenge by stealing Christmas and heading back to her castle to revel in her accomplishment. The Lion (Seth Robichaux), Tin Man (Kate Paige), and Scarecrow (Amber Pierce) all return as well, but they are now plagued with other issues to overcome throughout the story. The Lion is lonely and looking for a companion, and the Tin Man has lost his sense of humor. Whenever he tries to laugh, he ends up crying instead. All of these obstacles lead to a captivating journey to recapture the spirit of Christmas from the Wicked Witch and help the Lion and the Tin Man be able to be happy once more. In directing this children’s production, Camille has been able to watch the kids grow throughout the process. “Their enjoyment is written all over their faces,” she says. “They’re super pumped and their energy is so great to be around. It’s a very exciting moment to see them grow for two hours and come back a week later with everything still memorized. I love working with children.” Throughout the show, Camille promises lots of sing-alongs and crowd involvement as the production is geared to keep you engaged throughout. Journey to the Land of Oz Dec. 2–18 during showtimes at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays or 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $18 and may be purchased online at bayouplayhouse.com.

ELF THE MUSICAL, JR. BY JONAH GIROIR

O

n Dec. 10, the littlest stage performers gather to present “Elf the Musical, Jr.” as part of South Louisiana Center for the Arts’ holiday production. This family-friendly, Christmas themed musical features a cast of 33 children, ages 7-16, including Bernadette Clark (Buddy), Julia Bond (Jovie), Alex Simon (Emily Hobbs), Sofia Kiyanfar (Michelle Hobbs) and Benton Blanchard (Walter Hobbs). “Elf the Musical, Jr.” is based on the beloved 2003 holiday film “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell. This hilarious fish-out-ofwater comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity. Buddy, a young orphan, crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole, where he is raised and unaware that he is actually a human. However, his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth that he does not belong at the North Pole. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to discover his family and learn about his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father has a place on Santa’s naughty list and that his half-brother does not believe in Santa, Buddy strives to win over his family and help New York to remember the true meaning of Christmas. “Elf the Musical, Jr.” drives home the message that it’s never too late to grow and each of these young performers are sure to embrace their inner elf with plenty of large ensemble musical numbers featuring elves and New Yorkers of every type. The show runs for two days, Dec. 10 and 11, at H.L. Bourgeois High School’s auditorium in Gray. Show times are 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $8 for children 12 years of age and younger and $11 for adults; tickets may be purchased at the door.

Want to Go? JERSEY BOYS DEC. 10-18 SAENGER THEATRE 1111 CANAL STREET NEW ORLEANS ADMISSION: BEGINS AT $34 TICKETMASTER.COM

F

rankie Valli & The Four Seasons were just four guys from New Jersey, until they sang their very first note. Their unique sound struck a chord, and the radio simply couldn’t get enough of it. While their performances were phenomenal on stage, however, things were not quite as peachy off stage. Go behind the music and inside their story Dec. 13 – 18 when the hit Broadway Musical “Jersey Boys” takes the Saenger Theatre stage for a stop on its second national tour. This Tony Award-winning true-life musical phenomenon follows Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons from the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and features their biggest hits including “Sherry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” and “December, 1963,

(Oh What A Night).” Leslie Rochette, who takes on the role of Francine and several other supporting spots, is thrilled to be returning to “Jersey Boys” after being on the first national tour, but that is not the only return she is making on this tour. Leslie also grew up in New Orleans and went to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) for dance until she tore her ACL. Upon doing so, she switched to the school’s musical theater program and fell in love with it. Leslie then went to school at Columbia College in Chicago and made her way to New York for theater auditions. “The rest is history and now I’ve been doing ‘Jersey Boys’ for four years,” she explains of the journey. “I auditioned about three times and eventually found

8 December 2016 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

the perfect role for me.” Leslie describes the production as similar to VH1’s “Behind the Music” mixed with a concert as it follows Frankie Valli’s life and the formation of his band. Leslie can be seen throughout the production as she takes on multiple roles. “I’m technically Francine and others. I play somebody’s date, a couple of waitresses, and I sing “My Boyfriend’s Back” in the first act,” she says. “In the second act, I play Francine, Frankie Valli’s daughter, so you get to see the struggles she deals with while having a father in the spotlight.” And while Leslie sings lead on “My Boyfriend’s Back” in the first act, her favorite song in the production happens to occur later on in the show. “My favorite song is “Beggin” which

is in the second act. I’m in the scene, but I don’t sing it. I think it’s the coolest part of the show and it ties into the story very well.” In addition to her eagerness to bring the show to hometown audiences, Leslie is also thrilled to take the stage at the Saenger for the first time as an adult. “I’ve been waiting for this moment, and I’m just so excited to come back home as a successful actress and be with family and live at home for a week,” she says. “I’ve been bragging about New Orleans for four years on this tour, and I can’t wait to show everybody good places to eat and show them around.”

FAMILY

BY KATIE PORTIER

10 December 2016 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

D

ressed in my snowman pajamas, I recall my mother layering me in what seemed like endless jackets, knit hats, and gloves as a little girl. Big as marshmallows from our outerwear that most likely was not necessary in a Louisiana winter, we’d pile into our car and drive along the streets of Houma hunting down the best Christmas light displays. If we were lucky (and well behaved), we even got a candy cane, a sip of hot chocolate, and a chance to see real reindeer at various stops. It’s a tradition I’ll never forget - a memory that filled our town with lights, decorations, community cheer, and a spirit that was unmatched. In an effort to recapture the spirit of the holidays and bring wonder back to the children of now, a group of volunteers are revamping the Houma Christmas Parade and making a full day of festival fun for all to enjoy set for Dec. 3. “Seeing the happy faces of all our children as we bring Christmas to town

and seeing families enjoying themselves in a festive atmosphere is what I am most looking forward to,” Shelly Ronquillo, Christmas Committee chairperson, says. The Houma Downtown Christmas Festival, presented by Cenac Marine, will feature a full day of holiday family-friendly activities followed by the Christmas Parade. The day begins with the Candy Cane Classic 5K, where participants can wear their tackiest Christmas sweaters while running or walking the 5K route throughout downtown. Christmas music will fill downtown Houma throughout the day. The Courthouse Square will be the stage for performances by local schools, churches, and the Houma-Terrebonne Community Band. LeCirque will perform a Christmas play along Main Street in the Ledet parking lot, while Maria Immacolata School will present a live nativity near the Memorial Fountain. At the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum, Le Petit Theatre de Terrebonne will showcase “The Night Before Christmas” and “Cajun Night Before Christmas” through storytelling at various times during the festival. Vandebilt Catholic High School’s choir will also provide carolers along Main Street.

In Santa’s Workshop, children can make arts and crafts, play fun games, and participate in fun activities provided by Kids in Motion Playhouse Museum and Junior Auxiliary of Houma. Many of the kids’ activities are free, while others may cost a dollar or two to benefit the museum. Balloon artists, stilt walkers, face painters, characters, and more will also be on hand interacting with guests. Merchant windows along downtown will also be decorated to the max as they participate in a window dressing contest. “What a wonderful idea to be able to create a sense of place for family and friends to come visit during the holidays, create economic development,

and to continue to create partnerships within our community for all cultures to gather and share a sense of place,” Anne Picou, Main Street manager, says of the holiday efforts. The Christmas parade, a long running tradition in our city, will take on a new look and standards. The parade will still run 4-6 p.m. from Terrebonne High School to Barrow Street; however, parade goers will notice 22 brand new, beautiful Christmas floats. After receiving feedback from the community following last year’s parade, it was decided that this year only Christmas music will be played along the route and the parade will consist of the floats, a local high school band and color guard, and child-friendly

12 December 2016 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

characters. Santa Claus will of course be the guest of honor and make his way to the Courthouse to light the new community Christmas tree. Along with the new tree – a 32-foot stunning display of LED lights – many areas of downtown will be outfitted with new Christmas decorations and lights. The Courthouse Square, Main Street, Bayou Walk, and new light poles throughout downtown will feature the newly purchased lights. Older decorations that have been repurposed by volunteers will hang on Barrow Street and Grand Caillou Road. Additionally, the traffic and pedestrian bridges along the bayou will be draped in lights. As years go on, the plan is to continue to spread more decorations in

the historic district and beyond. As the event grows near, anticipation of young children and their parents filling downtown to celebrate the holidays together feels reminiscent of the days of my own snowman pajamas. New traditions will be made and new memories cherished. “I personally cannot wait to share all the hard work the committee and volunteers have put into this event,” Shelly says. “We, as a community, are truly blessed. All the efforts are worth it just to see the sparkle in the eyes of our children and the ear-to-ear smiles I know they’ll joyously display.”

INK AND BONE BY LISA UNGER

BY JESSI SUIRE, PUBLIC RELATIONS COORDINATOR, TERREBONNE PARISH LIBRARY SYSTEM

R

iveting, chilling, ingenious—these are only a few words literary critics have used to describe the incomparable Lisa Unger. Her novel “Ink and Bone,” published in June 2016 and available through the Terrebonne Parish Library System, is the latest addition to a resume that spans 12 years, 14 novels, and countless awards. “Ink and Bone” is the first novel by Lisa Unger that I have read, and it certainly will not be my last. Her latest thriller follows protagonist Finley Montgomery as she navigates the human world with its complicated relationships, unfathomable violence, and familial tension through the spiritual world, which, come to find, is really no different at all. Finley’s story concerns itself much with her own coming-of-age, an unconventional

look at self-discovery. Who are you in the world when you can see things nobody else can see? Prophetic visions of the dead haunt Finley’s waking hours, a gift she shares with her grandmother Eloise. Eloise attempts to help Finley tap into her own spiritual gift, this ability to communicate with the lost and forgotten that she neither understands nor wants. Readers are given several different perspectives throughout the novel that allow Finley’s story to be told in a well-balanced, meaningful way. Finley finds herself inextricably linked to the disappearance of Abbey Gleason, daughter of Wolf and Merri Gleason, a case going colder by the second. Merri seeks out Jones Cooper, a private investigator who has for many years worked with Eloise, as a last-ditch effort

18 December 2016 | Gumbo Entertainment Guide

to find her missing daughter. The catch? Only Finley can pick up the signals from Abbey, a gift that smacks her fullforce into the spiritual world where she is destined to play a part, but doesn’t yet fully understand. What happened to Abbey? Who is Real Penny, New Penny, and what is Betty Fitzgerald’s role in all of this? You’ll have to read to find out, because I’m not telling. Told in a vivid and contemporary style, Lisa Unger bridges the gap for readers of all interests. The Hollows, where the story takes place, is a mysterious town that has a presence as strong as any character. Spirituality and supernatural force is threaded throughout the story, but the novel never fails to feel like a character inspired portrait of real people and places. Twenty-year-old Finley is a

college student balancing a delicate romance with bitterness towards her mother. Merri Gleason is a heartbroken mother of a missing child, trapped in a marriage with a philandering husband. Jones Cooper is a private investigator with a disbelieving notion of the spiritualists who work for him. What do they all have in common? The tangled, twisted haunting of Abbey Gleason. Lisa Unger’s “Ink and Bone” teaches us, much as it does Finley, that the dead do indeed haunt the living. But the living haunt the dead, too. For those who want to know what happened to Abbey Gleason, you will surely be surprised.

FAMILY

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES BY JONAH GIROIR

S

tarting last year with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Disney claimed the month of December for the foreseeable future. That continues this year with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” on Dec. 16. However, this entry does not fall into the typical episode line that we’ve become accustomed to with Star Wars releases. Rather, “Rogue One” tells the story of Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and other members of the Rebellion as they set out to steal plans for the Death Star. Be on the lookout for the return of Darth Vader to the big screen. While “Rogue One” will probably be the biggest release of the month, there are still a few more movies that are worth mentioning. “Assassin’s Creed” (Dec. 21) marks the next attempt at

kickstarting a trend of adapting video game series to film. Similar to the games, which are cinematic in nature, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender), a descendant of the secret Assassins society, will explore the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar. A nice mix of present day and 15th Century action in Spain should make for an interesting experience. “Passengers” starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence also releases on Dec. 21. James Preston (Pratt) and Aurora Lane (Lawrence) along with thousands of other people are traveling via spacecraft to a distant colony plant, however a malfunction in the ship’s sleep chambers causes James and Aurora to awake 90 years earlier than expected. The movie follows

them as they try to survive these dire circumstances. December does not offer too much for children, but there is at least one animated feature. “Sing” hits theaters on Dec. 21 with a star-studded cast voicing animals in the world’s greatest singing competition. Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, and many others lend their talents to this movie from the creators of “Despicable Me.” “Office Christmas Party” (Dec. 9) and “Why Him?” (Dec. 23) are the comedy offerings for the month. “Office Christmas Party” has a “Hangover”like vibe to the trailers, so if you prefer comedies in that realm, this may be the one for you. “Why Him?” follows the interactions between a disapproving father (Bryan Cranston) and his daughter’s new boyfriend (James Franco). For those looking for a few scares this holiday season, “Incarnate”(Dec. 2) tells the story of an exorcist (Aaron Eckhart) tapping into the subconscious mind of a tormented boy (David Mazouz) who is possessed by a demon. This movie should at least provide some jump scares as supernatural-

based horror movies tend to find ways to sneak up on you and give you a good shock. December also treats us to a new Will Smith film, “Collateral Beauty” (Dec. 16). Smith portrays a successful New York advertising executive that retreats from life after a tragic event. He begins to question the universe by writing letters to Love, Time, and Death. Unexpectedly, he receives answers and is enlightened to how these things interlock and how loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty. Edward Norton, Keira Knightley, Michael Pena, Naomie Harris, Jacob Latimore, Kate Winslet, and Helen Mirren join Smith to form a talented cast. Finally, “La La Land” hits theaters on Dec. 16 as probably the biggest Oscar contender for the month. This original musical tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) as they struggle to make ends meet in modern day Los Angeles. Mia, an aspiring actress, and Sebastian, a dedicated jazz musician, eventually meet and fall in love, but their dreams of success threaten their blossoming relationship.
