THE SUMMER ISSUE I’m going to share a really personal message with you this month, dear readers. This issue is the Summer Issue, in which we share and write about fun things that pertain to summer vacation and our warmer weather. But as you will read on to see, I feel like this issue has an underlying message for those who want to receive it. I have been struggling with my faith over the last month. Unanswered prayers, as you probably know, are extremely hard to push through. ‘Loss’ seemed to be the theme for me during March and April. The loss of friends, the search for purpose and the question of “Why?” has weighed heavily on my heart.

God and loved ones around her to hold her up, and she’s used her journey to help others. Learn more about the book and the program on page 14. Our second story is about Kalon Johnson, the newly appointed Outdoor Ambassador with Explore Houma. Kalon is an avid outdoor enthusiast and fisherman, who also has his own YouTube series, KDJ Fishing. Through all his struggles to get to this point, Kalon recognizes that his faith in God to lead him is why he is where he is. Read about Kalon's passion for fishing on page 18. Finally, we visit the St. Francis Vegetable Garden and learn more about the project Cheryl Skinner and others have brought to our community. More than just a garden now, the Greauxing at Home Program teaches families how to garden and grow their own healthy produce. St. Francis is known for his devotion to nature and generally recognized as the patron saint for the environment. Learn more about the mission of the community garden on page 22.

Somewhere in my doubt, the following verse was shown to me: Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” So I placed my trust in him, and let all my worries go. Insert this month’s issue of Point of Vue. Hidden within each of these stories is the message I was looking for, the answers I sought. It took me proofreading each of them on the same day before I saw the answers to my prayers shining through. While each of these stories does fit our theme of summer, each story also bursts with personal stories of faith. Our first story is about Vera Holloway and her new book “Your Second Chapter” and a special program “Beauty from Ashes” for those who are suffering. Vera is a licensed professional counselor who is certified in meditation and specializes in trauma. Having issues of abandonment herself, she turns to

I coincidentally said it outloud to Mrs. Barbara Claudet while doing my interview for Chateau Chic, “I love that we live in a community where we can speak openly about our faith and share the stories of others’ faith as well.” I was meant to visit the beautiful Bouverans during the season of Lent, and reflect upon the beauty there. Being in their wonderful space was like being welcomed home. If you have a chance to visit this special home, garden and family in Lockport, please do so! Thank you, dear readers, for allowing me to share this personal note with you. This month’s issue was more than a “God wink” for me. It was an awakening and an answer. I hope you too can find meaning in this month’s stories. POV

SAY WHAT?

What was your favorite summer job?

JASON My favorite summer job was working in the warehouse and rebuild shop at United Diesel where my dad worked. It is where I learned Pedro.

ASHLEE I have the best memories working during the summer. My Mema and Pap would hire my sister and I to do odd and end jobs around their house. We did this from the time we were in middle school until college! My Pap paid us to do yard work and clean the attic but we were really making the sweet memories that I will cherish forever!

KATHERINE The only summer job I had was working at the Chauvin swimming pool. Surrounded by sun, water and friends made for a great environment. It was fun - and I got paid for it!

MARIAH My favorite summer job growing up was working at the Rig Museum “Mr.Charlie” in Morgan City. It was such an educational and cool experience.

STEPHEN My favorite summer job growing up was a camp counselor at Taborine and Fan. I worked with children in the community, went on field trips, taught them how to swim, and participated in educational activities.

TERESA

I participated in a summer internship that allowed me to work closely with local healthcare professionals. I volunteered at local hospitals and studied science and anatomy because I had a sincere interest in pursuing a degree in the healthcare field. Other than that, I waited tables. I loved my job as a server!

CHATEAU CHIC

BIENVENUE AUX BOUVERANS BY MARY DITCH | PHOTOS BY MISTY LEIGH MCELROY

1 Stepping inside the Bouverans along Bayou Lafourche, you are somehow magically transported back in time and welcomed home all in the same moment. Home to six generations of the Claudet family, Rene and Barabra Claudet, the current owners, are proud to share their family’s history with all those who pass through their doors. Built in 1860 by Rene’s great-great grandfather, Pierre Joseph Claudet, the Bouverans is a classic French homestead situated in Lockport. The home has been renovated by Rene’ and Barbara, who purchased Bouverans in 1978. Except for a brief five-year period, Bouverans has been owned by Pierre’s descendants over the last 160 years. As you can imagine, the stunning three bedroom home is filled with memories of time gone by, and overflows with stories from generations past. The home beacons you to reminisce on the

world Pierre Joseph was experiencing in 1860. He left his native country of France at the age of 25 to create a new life in America. He came to a young country filled with turmoil and uncertainty, but also with hope and new opportunity. Pierre Joseph witnessed the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and lived through the civil war from 1861 to 1865. Yet during this time of upheaval he envisioned a great new future. On April 26, 1860, Pierre Joseph made his first of a series of land purchases in Lafourche parish comprising 800 arpents. The Claudet family history recounts that wartime limited his access to skilled labor and imported materials. However, Pierre Joseph moved forward with the construction of the home, focusing on local craftsmen using local materials. Removing all the grander elements common to many homes of this time and focusing on a simple symmetrical design, the two-story brick and frame house combines French Creole and American Greek Revival architectural features. The new

8 home was named after Pierre Joseph’s hometown of Bouverans, France. Rene and Barbara now welcome guests to their home, which doubles as a bed and breakfast. The two guest suites are named for their daughters, Adrienne and Jeanette. The home’s renovations allowed for the addition of a modern bathroom attached to each suite. The space on the first floor, underneath the new bathrooms, was transformed into a large, modern kitchen, allowing more space to cook for guests. Unique to the home, and certainly one of its best features, are the gardens. The backyard features the over 300 year old Bouverans oak, a swimming pool, a beautiful meditation garden, the private Saint Joseph chapel, the Blessed Mary garden and the Stations of the Cross. This special space was virtually untouched by Hurricane Ida, and offers the weary soul a feeling of peace and comfort. POV

"No one gets to write their first chapter of life, but everyone can write their second." STORY BY HEIDI GUIDRY PHOTOS BY CHANNING CANDIES Thibodaux native Vera Holloway has turned this statement into a beautiful healing journey that has helped hundreds of local women, and now, she can reach many more with her book “Your Second Chapter.” Vera is a licensed professional counselor who is certified in meditation and specializes in trauma. Having issues of abandonment herself, she turns to God and loved ones around her to hold her up, and she’s used her journey to help others. Not only did she feel abandoned by her biological father, but also by her adoptive father who left her walking down the aisle alone on her wedding day due to religious differences. Her private practice had seen an influx of clients and Vera didn’t have enough time in the day to schedule and meet the needs of those on the other end of the phone. Vera describes herself as a people pleaser; that part of herself along with her big heart left her feeling like she had to accommodate the needs of the broken. She recognized that counseling is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to healing and many aspects go into the process. In her experience, she said one of the things that help struggling people is a sense of community, “Community and having a network of people that remind you you aren’t alone, or to say what can I do to be the hands and feet of Jesus,” she said passionately. She noticed the women in her life shared a core of similarities when it comes to healing and she wanted to find a way to help women in the community who were struggling with abandonment, abuse, neglect, trauma and hurt. This led to Beauty From Ashes. The name Beauty From Ashes was based on Isaiah 61 in the Bible, “God will give us beauty from ashes, but we have to trade our ashes to get something beautiful,” she interpreted. Beauty From Ashes was a ten-week program that began at a friend of Vera’s church. The curriculum didn’t only teach how to communicate, how to heal from what happened to them, or teach how to walk through the fire to get to the other side; she said it was about connecting with other women so they can have support. She had no idea the program would explode the way it did, so she returned to her home church, and offered it to the ladies there. It eventually grew to them having to host two ten-week sessions

“WE ARE IN THE SAME STORM, BUT NOT THE SAME BOAT. SO, LET’S STOP THE COMPARISON AND START GIVING COMPASSION.” per year and capped the attendance to one hundred. She started to travel to other areas and trained women as facilitators to be able to help others as well. Vera also had Facebook groups from the East and West coasts of the nation joining them each week. It took off unexpectedly and Vera was being spread thin. A woman of boundaries, Vera’s main priority is her family and she said she will not overshadow family time with work. “My first ministry is my family,” she said, “There’s no more important job or greater responsibility than taking care of what God gave you first.” At the same time, she said the women going through the program and her clients were encouraging her to write a book about what she was teaching. At the time, she couldn’t add any more clients to her planner, she couldn’t add any more time to Beauty From Ashes,

but her heart still ached for the people who didn’t have the resources to get counseling. Seeing herself go from therapist to a writer was surreal for Vera because she said she’s a communicator, “How do I articulate what I want to tell a woman or someone struggling who's not going to walk through my doors?” Another obstacle she found out about herself was fear from the level of vulnerability writing brings versus talking out loud. “It’s one thing to be behind closed doors…you are working with someone one-on-one and working through things, we’re able to be open with each other, it’s a different type of relationship,” she explained,” when you move onto the writing side of things, you put your words out there, now anyone can judge it. Anyone can critique it. It freaked me out.” In the book, she helps others heal

from their stories by introducing her story of abandonment. The human in her struggled with writing her story simply because it stirred up some past emotions and she admitted she had to go to therapy herself during the writing process. The book consists of two chapters: Chapter One: Identifying Stuck, and Chapter Two: Walking into Peace, Purpose, & Productivity. Just as life does, the chapters are broken down into phases that cause people to become stuck. Chapter One covers the phases of particular situations that we get stuck in whether it’s abandonment, abuse, mind traps, and so forth. The Second Chapter breaks down into phases of hope and healing such as making room, renewing your mind, healthy emotions, and so forth. The book isn’t only a metaphor to write your second chapter, it offers tools

and journaling spaces to write out your journey. In her letter to the reader at the beginning of the book, she talks about storms and how it correlates to human behavior. After Hurricane Ida passed, she said one of her first thoughts was “We are in the same storm, but not the same boat. So, let’s stop the comparison and start giving compassion.” The fact that storms are the same, we all feel it in some way, but we all process it differently resonated with her and she used it to explain how she has been through struggles but has come through the other side. Although she’s not in the same boat as readers, she extends her hand to welcome the hurt into their second chapters. To read more about Vera, visit her website at veraholloway. com. STORY BY YASMEEN SINGLETON | PHOTOS SUBMITTED While many enjoy the outdoors activity as a past-time, Kalon Johnson says fishing is his life’s calling to help others. Born and raised in Thibodaux, Kalon is an Outdoor Ambassador with Explore Houma, owner of KDJ Fishing,

and a content creator who describes himself as a country boy with a passion for fishing. Kalon discovered his passion for the outdoor activity very early on. “I started fishing at a very young age; my uncles used to take

me fishing as a kid. Just like everyone else back in the day, you start off on the side of the road sitting on a bucket catching catfish and bass. My uncle kept bringing me out and I picked up a love and passion for fishing. It wasn’t

until I got into college at Nicholls that I started looking at it from a different perspective and on a competitive level.” Kalon decided to create a YouTube series, KDJ Fishing, documenting and sharing his fishing adventures,

most notably catfish and redfish. He recently announced his partnership with Explore Houma, part of the Houma-Terrebonne Convention and Visitors Bureau. In his role as an outdoor ambassador, Kalon shares the experience of outdoor activities

May 2022 19 povhouma.com

in Terrebonne Parish and educates the community on the benefits of fishing. “My passion for fishing and giving back to the community is what led me to the role. I feel that whatever God blesses you with, it's important

to give back and not just keep it to yourself. Some way, somehow, you should dig deep down and find out what it is you can give back with the talent you’ve been given. Reaching out to people in the community, young and old, and teaching them how to fish and the good things nature in Terrebonne Parish has to offer is my way of giving back,” Kalon shared. As a fisherman, reaching youth and positively impacting their lives has been the most rewarding aspect of Kalon’s current role. While fishing can be a fun pastime activity, Kalon says the positive effects fishing can have on someone’s mental and physical health is much more rewarding than the feeling you get when snagging your first fish. “This role has helped me help keep kids out of trouble and keep them active and going. People don't realize how much of an outlet fishing is; if you’re dealing with depression or anger management, fishing can help you on a mental and spiritual level because it allows you to get a different perspective on life,” the angler explained.

Although Kalon has established a fulfilling career as a fisherman, he didn't always see himself sailing down his current career path. The angler said that as he matured, it became evident that fishing was more than just a hobby, it was his life calling. “I didn't see myself in this position but I’m very thankful that I am. Now that I’m older I understand that it's not my passion and my love for the outdoors, it's about helping others. I enjoy helping people deal with their problems and helping them better themselves,” Kalon said. The biggest lesson fishing has taught him is to overcome his fear of what’s waiting on the other side of the lake. He shared, “My biggest challenge over the years has been my fear of the unknown. Whenever you’re growing and maturing as a person you try to figure out why, what is my calling, and what is it that I'm here to do. I realized that whenever you’re called to do something, it can feel very overwhelming. You feel like you have so much weight on your shoulders and so many pieces to a puzzle to make a beautiful picture. I overcome

May 2022 20 povhouma.com

it by keeping my faith in God and understanding that he’s going to lead me. It’s not about me, it’s about him. Having faith in God helps you see life in a positive light and that’s what fishing does for me. It allows me to teach people not only with my words but with my actions, my videos, my pictures, it allows people to see my life from my perspective and my adventures with fishing.” Kalon plans to continue to be present and involved in the community by sharing outdoor adventures and using his passion to inspire and assist the community. “It feels great to know I'm positively influencing people.” Kalon encourages those who are searching for their “why” to keep fighting and rely on the faith of God. Kalon explained, “When you wake up you have a choice. You dictate how your day goes and you have to greet everything in your life each day with a smile on your face. There's no use in complaining, you have to just take control of your day, don't let the day take control of you.” POV

STORY BY YASMEEN SINGLETON PHOTOS SUBMITTED To grow a garden is to believe in tomorrow. When people come together to plant seeds, it helps the entire community reap the harvest. For years, St. Francis Vegetable Garden has provided and maintained a vigorous space for neighborhoodlevel social change while providing the community with nourishing foods. With three locations, the St. Francis Vegetable Garden's mission is to help the communities of Houma and Thibodaux by growing community vegetable gardens and donating the produce to local food banks. The organization also partners with parents and teachers, providing an outdoor science and biology classroom for students, and educates the community on the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables. The community garden is most proud of its partnership with the Terrebonne Churches United Food Bank, a local food pantry whose mission is to fight against hunger by helping families in need through local food, monetary donations, and charitable organizations. St. Francis Vegetable Garden Coordinator Cheryl Skinner said that while working as a volunteer with TCU she and a few of her peers noticed a lack of produce included in the food boxes and decided to take action. “About seven years ago, there were a few people in Thibodaux who got together and decided that the food banks weren’t getting enough fresh fruit and vegetables. So they got together and formed a non-profit organization, which turned out to be St. Francis Vegetable Garden. The clients love the fresh fruits and

vegetables! It’s really important because the fresher the vegetable, the more nutritious it is versus a canned vegetable,” Cheryl explained. St. Francis Vegetable Garden continues to recruit volunteers that want to roll up their sleeves, and plant seeds for fresh fruit and vegetables and tend to the crops as they grow. In the spring, they grow tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, cucumber, and green beans. In the fall, they grow cabbage, broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower. While the community gardens provide fresh produce through the TCU Food Bank, it also educates the community on how to grow, harvest, and preserve their fruits and vegetables through

a program offered by the garden. “We have several programs where volunteers come along and teach participants what they need to know. Not only do we grow and hand out produce to the food bank, but we also teach people,” Cheryl added. St. Francis Vegetable Garden plans to continue serving the community by expanding and getting families more involved in gardening. Cheryl shared, “We plan to grow the gardening program this year; we want to incorporate families more. If I can get a mom and her three kids that want to learn how to garden, we’ll teach them how to plant and cook as well. We’re expanding so we can have an even greater harvest and

more people can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables.” In the coming months, St. Francis Vegetable Garden will be adding a new location to its list of community gardens and launching its Greauxing at Home Program, a four-week series that teaches people not only how to grow organic vegetables, but also how to harvest, cook, and preserve them. MAY CELEBRATES

MOTHERS There’s a beauty to this day in the month of May, where we stop and celebrate the mothers who gave us life, gave us their days, who gave us their best so we could become our best. I’ve written on this before, but I’ll write about it again. It’s worth repeating year after year. Similar words, same story.

Now that warmer months are here, it's time to switch up your skincare routine. ZO Skin Health's Brightalive is an advanced skin brightener clinically proven to increase luminosity, visibly improve skin clarity and fade the appearance of dark spots for a brighter, more even complexion. While supplies last, get a free travel size ZO Skin Health Brightalive with any ZO Skin Health purchase.

I own a collection of scribbled cards from the kids who call me mom. They’re tucked into a drawer, saved year after year. Hazy memories of Mother’s Day of my childhood recall the same excitement of trying to surprise my mom with handwritten cards, a fresh flower corsage to wear to church, and maybe even a homemade breakfast. She was never surprised, but always acted as though our efforts were unnoticed until the moment of the big reveal. I’m thankful for a mom who taught me motherhood well. She displayed the sacrificial kind of motherhood that puts the needs of little people first, while allowing your own desires to take second place. Motherhood births within you a new you that wasn’t there before little eyes turned your way, feeling the safety of a mom before a little voice can even form the word “mommy.” May celebrates mothers. There’s a boy who lives in our home. He’s seven and brings us more joy than we ever imagined. He’s “special” in all the right ways. He loves hard, loves people and has never met someone he couldn’t turn into a friend. He’s lived here for almost two years, a “foster child” that we almost wouldn’t know how to do life without. He’s special needs, but we never imagined we would need his type of special to get us through some of the hardest months of our lives. His laughter is contagious and his innocence a gift. We have fostered him the only way we know how - a little wild and entirely loved. Fostering means “encouraging or promoting the development of something typically regarded as good.” We have fostered within our boy who is not our boy the best parts of us. We have laughed at his antics and loved and lived. And somehow fallen in love with a little soul who was unknown to us for the first six years of his life. But one who will always hold a place in our hearts. It’s a crazy kind of love that looks into the eyes of a little one who isn’t yours, but with a heart that aches for him as though he belongs to this family of ours. Could someone please tell my heart what my head knows? This “ours but not ours” is the hardest kind of love, and fostering good things is not hard, but the unknown places of this kind of love feel fraught with fears. There’s thousands of mothers all over this country who on this Mother’s Day wear the title of “foster.” These mothers who welcome into their home the children whose lives were wrecked by abuse or neglect. We are a collective group of mothers who are taking broken pieces of beautiful lives and piece by piece putting together what will one day be beauty where once was only broken. May celebrates mothers. Can I tiptoe into an area of motherhood no one talks about? There are mothers who dreamed of motherhood, but had it yanked away because of their own choices, their own May 2022 26 povhouma.com

neglect, their own abuse. These mothers ache, too. The moms on the other side of fostering, the ones who have had children taken away, are wrecked with their own grief. It’s easy to cast blame and judgment when maybe some love would be appreciated in deeper ways than we can imagine.

Call today to schedule your appointment at our new location at the corner of HWY 311 & Polk St.

Martin Luther King Jr. said it this way, “whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” Our society silently screams for us to notice the ones who were unnoticed and are repeating the lifestyles and patterns of those who came before them. Choices have turned into character traits and have landed so many in places they never dreamed.

When you’re continually confronted with broken people whose brokenness has affected others, it’s hard to feel compassion.

“Can I love these women who have not shown love to the ones they should have loved the most?” The collateral damage of drugs and violence is sending piercing shards into the hearts of the children exposed to harder lives than most can imagine.

DR. STEPHEN A. MORGAN JR.

If May is for mothers, may it be with a mother’s heart that we wrap our arms and lives around our own families and the hearts and lives of others who are so different than us, but yet so much the same. One soul rescued from a lifestyle gives way to so many who will follow that one person. So we love the children of the moms who didn’t live out motherhood as they should. And in a much harder step, we love the moms who have lost children. We allow their shattered hearts to pierce our own, and we promise nothing more than love. But love is always a mother’s best gift to give. So we open wide our mothering hearts to a world so in need of more love. May this Mother’s Day and month of May change all our hearts into something bigger than ourselves. POV

OUCH! THAT PAIN COULD BE ARTHRITIS

We all have them. Sudden, out-of-nowhere pains. Or nagging aches that flare up in cold, damp weather. And there's the snap-crackle-pop morning routine, often accompanied by the body just refusing to move.

Inflammatory arthritis occurs when the immune system that normally protects the body turns against it, causing inflammation and painful swelling in joints and tissue.

Some of the aches and pops can be attributed to an active lifestyle. Muscle soreness or injured tendons and ligaments are part of the price we pay for being fit.

The basic role of inflammation is to rid the body of bacteria, viruses, tumor cells and unwanted invaders like splinters and insect bites. When it becomes chronic, inflammation can result in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

However, for those of us of a "certain age," persistent pain, particularly around the joints, could be a sign of arthritis. The risk of arthritis increases as we age. In many cases, injuries from years ago can trigger inflammation that results in arthritis. This month is recognized as Arthritis Awareness Month, drawing attention to one of the most prevalent health conditions in this country. As many as one-in-four adults suffer from arthritis, with symptoms ranging from mild to debilitating. Arthritis by the numbers According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), arthritis currently affects some 58.5 million people in the US and is the leading cause of disability. Statistics show that more people miss work annually due to arthritis-related conditions than those related to diabetes, hypertension, heart problems or cancer. The outlook for the condition, which has no cure, doesn't seem to be improving. The CDC projects that by 2040: • 78 million (26%) adults aged 18 years or older will have diagnosed arthritis • Of adults with arthritis, an estimated 44% (35 million adults) will report activity limitations due to arthritis Kinds of arthritis Arthritis is a catchall diagnosis that includes more than 100 conditions affecting joints and surrounding tissue. However, those conditions fall into two primary categories—inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis. The degenerative disorder typically results from trauma or prolonged wear and tear on the joints. It mostly affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees, lower spine, hips or big toes. Pain and stiffness in the thumbs and fingers usually indicate OA as well.

• Grasping small objects • Reaching above one's head • Sitting or standing for long periods of time • Climbing stairs without resting • Pushing, pulling or lifting objects more than 10 pounds • Walking moderate distances • Stooping, bending or kneeling Treatment for arthritis

Early signs of arthritis

Unfortunately, there is no cure for arthritis. However, a treatment plan and lifestyle changes can help minimize pain and allow people to live healthier lives. Options include:

Certain symptoms of arthritis signal that it's time to see a doctor. The earlier the diagnosis, the easier it is to manage arthritis. Watch for symptoms such as:

• Weight management—extra pounds equal extra joint stress; an additional 10 pounds of weight puts 30 pounds of pressure on the knees

• Joint pain, swelling or tenderness

• Physical activity—low-impact exercise such as swimming, cycling, yoga or walking helps improve movement

• Joint stiffness, particularly in the morning or after prolonged sitting • Grinding or grating sounds in knees, hips or other joints • Pain in a part of the body previously injured • Pain in the thighs, buttocks or groin, possibly indicating hip arthritis • Symmetrical pain in joints on both sides of the body • Persistent pain or stiffness in hands, feet or wrists.

• Physical therapy—therapists develop a customized plan for overall better flexibility and mobility • Massage and reflexology—full-body or massages targeting specific areas such as reflexology for the feet and hands can provide temporary pain relief • Medication—doctors may recommend over-thecounter pain relievers for osteoarthritis, while prescribing specific drugs for patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Impact on daily activities

• Injections—pain management specialists may suggest cortisone or hyaluronic acid injections for severe pain

Once arthritis settles into the body, it doesn't take long to feel its impact. Movements or tasks that we seemed perfectly capable of doing one day become nearly impossible.

• Surgery—when pain becomes severe, joint replacement surgery may be needed

Seemingly routine activities that are difficult for people with arthritis include:

AS IF

TO SAY

Schedule a tour of our community to help your loved ones discover their new home with our expert care.

There I was one day last month, hanging out quietly in a rocking chair on my front porch, enjoying a breeze. As a kid, I spent many days with my grandparents hanging out in their rocking chairs on their front porch enjoying such a breeze as it sifted through mosquito screens stretched across the porch columns, which remains mandatory equipment in the lower latitudes of PoV Country. I spent so many days there that I still know their daily routine by heart: Wake early, butter-and-crackers breakfast, drip coffee, front porch rocking chair, lunch, nap, drip coffee, front porch rocking chair, supper, front porch rocking chair, sleep early. That was their life—in their white, bayouside bungalow, in their older years, watching boats on the bayou and cars on LA 1 go to-and-fro in front of them, with no obligations other than refreshing the coffee grounds in the drip pot. And on each visit with them, I simply could not understand how, with so many things to do in life, they could spend so many hours sitting quietly in their rocking chairs on their front porch doing seemingly nothing. It seemed so lonely and brainless, and it confounded me so deeply, that I swore I would never let myself spend such hours of nothingness when I was old enough to have my own rocking chair. Yet there I was one day last month, hanging out quietly in the situation I swore to never find myself in. But, curiously, the swear was not forsaken, for, as I soon discovered, sitting quietly never happens. You are never alone and brainless on a rocking chair on a front porch. You are never the only animal outside in a breeze. My confounding quietude was never quite quiet, due to multiple unexpected visits—like that of a carpenter bee. The husky little yellow and black fly buzzily hovered in typical geometric fashion, switching alignment between latitudes and longitudes every few seconds, trying to re-locate its nest in the neighbor’s rotting wood, using the sun and a porch column and my face as points for triangulation. After about 10 seconds of reconnaissance, it buzzed away at hypersonic speed, as if to say, “Darn it, rocking-chair man! You moved your head and now I need to start all over again!” I don’t know if it forgave me, but it returned soon after to begin its desperate search all over again, just like it said it would. So there we were, bee and I, hanging out quietly in my sworn-away front porch situation, when we heard a crow cawing as it soared away from its nest in a tall tree in the nearby woods. The stark blackness of the bird against the sunset startled us as much as its loud voice, cawing as if to say, “Ha! Ha! Ha! I just laid four eggs, and if you think you can’t find quiet now just wait about three weeks from now for my nestling shower!” As the crow flew to a new perch in a nearby tree, the bee buzzed away again, as if to say “Darn it,” only to return and start over.

So there we were, bee and crow and I, hanging out quietly in the formerly lonely and brainless situation, when a sizeable lizard emerged from behind one of the front-porch bannisters. It was one of those green anoles that hang around the yard usually nearby the house to catch a few bugs leaving their brick-and-mortar sanctuary from the day’s hot sun. The lizard turned its head slowly to view me

with its left eye and then its right eye, forming in its brain a binocular image of me the old-fashioned way (i.e., before primates). After a moment of neural processing, it began hopping up and down like a lowrider Cadillac, reacting to the realization of me by extending that retractable hyoid bone in the slack skin of its lower jaw, as if to say, “Dude, this is my territory,” as well as evoke its best Bill Bixby Hulk-warning, “Don’t make me change colors. You won’t like me when I change colors.” Little did it know that in the human world we tend to avoid dramatizing the loose skin beneath our chins. Neither did it care that it had disrupted the carpenter bee’s desperate reconnaissance. And neither did it notice that it foolishly made itself known to the parental crow who was contemplating hunting techniques to feed its impending nestlings in a few of weeks. Neither did any of them care that I had leftover Reese’s Easter candy in each of their uninvited and noisy shapes and was prepared to chew them in effigy. As it turns out, it’s quite a challenge to hang out quietly in a rocking chair on a front porch and simply enjoy a breeze. Sometimes it’s a cacophony of songbirds singing a libretto autocorrected by an iPhone from three simultaneous operas all in minor keys. Or sometimes it’s packs of fenced-in canines in distant yards, trying to get a bark in edgewise like radio callers into Sports Talk with Bobby Hebert and Mike Detillier. Yet, now in my own rocking chair, I persisted with just hanging out, just like my grandparents did all those years ago—something I swore I would never do. Then again, they probably warned me against that—as if to say that I shouldn’t swear at all. But it was in French, and it was hard to tell. POV
