HOME SWEET HOME
Welcome to the Home and Garden Issue! I will admit home décor is not my thing. My poor home’s style is 21st century toddler, with toys strewn all over the living room and sofa pillows haphazardly tossed to the floor. All of my furniture are hand-me-downs from my stylish mother and sister-in-law. I’m pretty sure the only things in our home I purchased myself are the pillows on the sofa from Target and the rug from some popular catalog. But I do dream of beautiful things. I watch HGTV, drool over shiplap and dog-ear magazines with grand plans to makeover each room of our house. So far, the only room to get an update was Jackson’s as he moved from a crib to a big boy bed. Oh well. I will simply use this issue to dog-ear a few more pages in my big home renovations to come. My hand-me-downs could use some help! When it came to planning out our editorial calendar, this is one issue we always knew we had to do. Over the course of the ten years we have published Point of Vue, one of the only features we have kept since issue one was Chateau Chic. We love being able to take our audience on a tour of a local home or business. It’s such a joy to meet homeowners and visit about the space their family calls home. In this month’s Chateau Chic, we give you an expanded view inside a local home starting on page 14. We also introduce you to the team of Brandon and Aimee Rushing and their company Coast and Cane. The duo put their woodworking and artistry skills to use creating furniture and rustic décor. They have some big news to
share with readers as their little Houma-based shop hits the big time online. Discover Coast and Cane on page 24. Home renovations would not be complete without trustworthy vendors to reach out to. Our special advertising section, The Southern Home, provides you with a business showcase featuring local businesses and their products. Browse through starting on page 29. While everyone loves the tiny handprint art that our children tend to come home with, it’s not necessarily something that you would frame and display in your home. PoV happily provides a few tutorials to help you and your children create abstract art that you would proudly display next to your Rodrigue. Let your creativity be guided on page 44. Spring is fast approaching and our gardens will soon be in full bloom. Local vendors meet weekly at the South Louisiana Seed Market in downtown Houma to provide fresh vegetables, fruit and seafood to the public. Learn more about the market on page 54 and stop by for some of the best our area farmers have to offer. So many things create a bond between mother and daughter. For the creative duo behind Waguespack Art, it’s a love of painting. Elaine and Megan Waguespack explain the passion behind their talents on page 64. We hope the Home and Garden Issue inspires you to create beautiful things! Happy Decorating! POV

SAY WHAT?
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPACE IN YOUR HOME AND WHY?
WENDELL | QHSE ADVISOR “My favorite space in my house is actually outside on my backyard patio. With a little work and imagination my wife and I have created it to resemble an old New Orleans courtyard atmosphere. It’s the place where I can relax and unwind, whether it’s working in the flower garden, grilling on the pit or just relaxing with a glass of wine and listening to the blues. ”
WAYNE | REALTOR
“My backyard patio, because of the outdoors. I love boiling seafood and grilling on our pit, having friends and family come over, and watching the kids playing in the yard, like when I grew up. I also enjoy having backyard fires, sitting around telling stories and having a few drinks.”
ALEX | MARKETING INTERN
“I would love to lie to you and say that I’m a studious person who sits in the nook of her study reading books in her spare time, but it would be exhausting to have to keep that up. In reality, I spend most of my time in my bedroom because my bed’s the perfect place to binge watch Netflix. Utilizing the pillow that everyone keeps on their bed, but never actually uses, I prop up my laptop with the cracked screen, lay back, and get lost in a fractured version of Stranger Things, Parks and Rec or Mindhunter. ”
TONYA | INSURANCE AGENT/ REALTOR “Our back patio, because I enjoy being outside with my family and watching my daughter Paisley play in the backyard. ”
PIE | HR CONSULTANT
“My favorite space in my home is my family room/den. It has glass windows that look out over the water. It’s peaceful and inviting. It’s where my sons play music together when they are home. There is lots of love and laughter in that room. ”

Drawn to the beautiful bones and grand scale of their traditional southern home, a local family brought new life to the original space by creating an atmosphere of laid back luxury. By embracing many details of the original structure and tweaking the existing floor plan to fit their family’s needs, the space transformed into a classic country modern gem.
Although the family was not in the market for a new home, after being approached by two separate friends who thought the home would be a good fit, the couple decided to take a look. Originally overwhelmed with the idea, they took a second look and unexpectedly shifted gears into a remodel adventure. Incorporating a new color palette throughout the entire home created a

LOSS I’ve started to write this month’s column over and over again. I’ve written a sentence, erased a sentence, retyped the same sentence, only to erase it all over again. What to write that can be spoken in only a few hundred words? What I really want is to sit down with my readers, look them in the eye and tell them that this life is so precious, so fragile, and beautiful yet broken all at the same time. I met him last July. His big, brown eyes stared at mine from across the conference center. He was all of one year old plus a couple of months. I scooped him into my American arms, him being the first African baby I’d ever held. Our differences were obvious, with his dark skin against my light. His tired mom passed a small bag to me, as I promised to hold her baby during the three-day marriage conference. “Just enjoy your time here,” I whispered. Our hearts melded together, two moms, raising kids oceans apart, but with hearts instantly knit together in a moment of shared motherhood. The conference lasted three days, and during multiple sessions, her boy was in my arms. I held him for hours each day, coaxing him to be quiet with Dum Dum lollipops and taking him outside of the open-air pavilion when being quiet simply wasn’t an option. She sat through marriage sessions in a country where men pay for their wives via an antiquated dowry system. She was one of those women. Her husband bought her for $1,000 from uncles who required the traditional dowry. If I went all the way across the ocean to hold her baby for those days, it would have been enough of a trip for me. To know that she was hearing ideas about marriage that crosses cultural boundaries and raises up a new generation who refuse to sell their daughters into marriage, it felt worth it. So many times as I held her brown-eyed boy, I prayed that he would never have to purchase his wife, that a willing father would say yes with no monetary strings attached.
Stephanie Hebert 985-868-1886
But New Year’s Eve day, as my family sat down for lunch, a phone call came that took me back to our summertime mission trip to Africa in a heart-wrenching, unexpected way. Mom and baby had passed away in a bus wreck on the chaotic streets of Nairobi, Kenya. The double decker, over-crowded bus had slammed into an 18-wheeler, killing 36 people

because of a supposed brake failure. My heart screamed as I sat down on the middle of my bathroom floor, trying to regain my composure before telling my kids why I had hurriedly walked out of the room. His mom and I were friends in the most unexpected of ways, forming a bond. Our hearts had remained intertwined over the love of her boy. Since returning from our trip, we had emailed back and forth. I always imagined returning one day, and his little feet would hopefully run toward me as they once did. This life is too short. As the writer of Ecclesiastes said, “Life is fleeting, like a passing mist. It is like trying to catch hold of a breath.” So we spend our lives trying to catch hold of something that can not ever truly be caught. But there is today. We can only enjoy the fleetingness of these moments and try to hold onto the memories of good times. I preach it to myself over and over again. Enjoy this day. Enjoy this moment. Take more pictures. Make more memories. Don’t get lost in what you don’t have, but treasure what you do. And if the people you love are with you, hold them as tight as you can. Love as hard as you can. Pray with them. Talk with them. Laugh with them. Smile across the room at them for no reason at all. Be thankful for today. Because this beautiful mist of life can never be caught, but it can always be cherished. The Louisiana coast and cane fields are a few things that come to mind when we think of our Bayou region. With local business Coast and Cane, you really get a feeling of home when selecting the next decorative item to add to your personal space. Coast and Cane was started by Aimee and Brandon Rushing in September of 2015. Aimee and Brandon focus on rustic, farmhouse features for the pieces they create for their business while keeping the Louisiana feel in mind. Coast and Cane creates a multitude of different products, ranging from furniture to signs and wall hangings. For Brandon, creating the dining tables, sofa tables, and benches are usually his forte. Brandon has a great deal of experience with woodwork, which is something he started while he was in high school. “I’ve been doing woodworking since high school, and a lot of it are things I have learned from my dad,” Brandon noted. Before the business was even thought of, Brandon had never made a table. However, he decided to give it a go. He made a table, put it up for sale, and got quick responses from people who wanted a custom table for themselves. Brandon also mentions, “The first thing I made was a wooden speaker box for my car when I was younger. I also made some for my friends in high school, which adds to my experience.” As for the sign making, Aimee is the one who creates the lettering and personalizes it for buyers. Aimee is a talented photographer, having owned her own business for 8 years. She eventu-

ally wanted to try something new, so she decided to take a break from photography to search for what would be next: Coast and Cane. With their pieces being made to order and customized, the customer will get something unique and different every time. For inspiration, Brandon and Aimee will look online at rustic, farmhouse styles, which create the inspiration for some items they are making. “We have many wood based products, but we are looking into launching products that are not wood based soon. For example, print pieces that buyers can hang in their homes,” Aimee says. These new items will either be available to download and print for oneself, or ordered and mailed to the customer directly. Most of Aimee and Brandon’s business is run through an Etsy website, where customers can order customized pieces from small businesses. Aside from their Etsy website, they also have a Facebook page where they showcase new items coming up for sale. What’s even more exciting though, is that Coast and Cane will be receiving it’s own shop on Houzz.com! Houzz is a popular website that helps inspire remodeling, designing, landscaping, and architecture. Aimee and Brandon used Houzz to draw inspiration when remodeling their own home, so the invitation to be included is significant for them. Houzz will be adding a marketplace to buy handcrafted products, too, and Coast and Cane has been selected to have a shop on the webpage. “We were selected through Instagram and our Etsy shop,” explains Aimee. “The woman working for Houzz was impressed by our pieces, as well as not having any negative ratings on our handmade products, which is typically hard to avoid when something is handmade.”

PERSONAL LOANS FOR Being selected to have a shop on Houzz is important to Brandon and Aimee, and the both of them feel “excited and honored” to be a part of this new addition to the impressive business website. “It’s going to be a new experience, but we’re thankful, especially to have been selected in a sea of competitors when it comes to handmade products,” says Brandon. Keep an eye out for the new update with Houzz, which will be launching soon as a place for inspiration and buying all in one. And if you’re looking for signs, furniture, wooden art pieces to display, or wooden tea lights in the future, you don’t have to look too far with Coast and Cane at our fingertips! POV

DELTA MILLWORK INC. Charlie Johnson and his team at Delta Millwork have been creating beautiful cultured marble and granite for use by local builders for over 45 years. While marble has a number of applications for use in bathrooms, including countertops, shower walls, tub alcoves and vanity tubs, granite also finds it’s way into bathrooms and kitchens alike. Getting his start in residential building, Charlie recognized the need for a local cultured marble source. He and other builders had to travel to find pieces of cultured and synthetic marble. After visiting a family member in Shreveport in the early 70s, Charlie recalls being blown away by the versatility and beauty of the product in a home that his cousin built. Charlie retuned to Houma and set out to teach himself how to create such a desirable product. After trial and error, he perfected the recipe, creating his first piece of marble after about a year and a half. Since then, there’s been no looking back. Charlie prides himself on being fair and honest when it comes to business and relies heavily on referrals from past customers. “I’ve done work in Houma, Thibodaux and all up and down the bayous,” explained Charlie. “I’ve proudly worked with generations of families and enjoy continuing to serve them. I’m grateful to God for giving me this opportunity to create beautiful things.”

The finishing touch to any home design is the decorating. Your décor and the art you select are a reflection of your family’s style and lifestyle. These personal touches placed in your house make it a home. We are all familiar with the “art” our little ones bring home from school. The handprint characters and coloring sheets so thoughtfully scribbled on are often destined for the refrigerator, only to make their way to a memory book or even the recycle bin. We recognize that even the youngest of budding artists has it in them to create beautiful masterpieces that look amazing enough to adorn the walls of your living room or office. The current, modern style of abstract painting lends itself perfectly to the less than perfect painting styles of a child. Let your little one show off their skills with one of these easy to complete crafts that you would be proud to curate on your walls. Simply choose a color palette of paints that match your color scheme and let them get to it!

Allow your child to just paint different colors onto the paper, using a lot of water to make the colors run together and blend. 2. Do this on two sheets. 3. After the sheets dry, choose the areas that have the best colors selections. From these areas cut letters to form words or even shapes such as circles or Easter eggs. 4. Glue these cutouts onto the second piece of artwork to create a one of kind work of art or the perfect season piece!

Every Tuesday afternoon, Houma customers are able to get fresh, home-grown products at cost-efficient prices – all while enjoying the company of friends, neighbors and maybe even family. The South Louisiana Seed Market started in February 2017 and is now a year old – operating on Tuesday’s out of the parking lot of South Louisiana Seed Co. Inc., in downtown Houma. The market runs each week from 3-5 p.m. – rain or shine. When the weather isn’t good, organizers set up in the alley next to South Louisiana Seed Co. Inc. to keep customers dry.
In its 12 months, the market has grown immensely and it’s now a well-populated event for those in the area.
ORGANIC
“The market has grown much faster than we anticipated,” said Cheryl Skinner, the Marketing Coordinator for the South Louisiana Seed Market. “There is a waiting list of potential vendors and we have dedicated customers that return weekly. All of us are deeply grateful for that.”
RAW
The market developed as a passion project for Cheryl who said she wanted to help bring a good thing to the people in Houma. Cheryl said she’s been a vendor at the Rienzi Market in Thibodaux

on Thursdays and noted how the community flocked to support that market with open arms. “I thought that Houma might appreciate a weekday market also,” Cheryl said. So she talked to Don Callahan, the owner of South Louisiana Seed Co. Inc., and he liked the idea, so it was born – officially opening up shop last year. After a few months of operation, the market started to grow, which led to other opportunities – namely a partnership, which Cheryl said the South Louisiana Seed Market is most grateful for. “After being open a couple of months, we partnered with the Houma Main Street Program run by Anne Picou,” Cheryl said. “By doing that, we could offer a wider variety of products at the market.” Variety is a huge attraction and selling point for the South Louisiana Seed Market. Cheryl said it’s what keep customers coming back – week after week – for more products.
The market has a little bit of everything – something that can appeal to literally anyone’s taste buds. Of course, there are fresh vegetables grown by local gardeners. That’s a stable of any local market. But the South Louisiana Seed Market also has others in a line of delicious products, including homemade salsa, jams, jellies, pickles, egg rolls, fried rice, pound cakes, cookies, freshly baked bread, cinnamon rolls, kettle corn, sweets and plants. For those wanting a meal on site, the market also serves plate lunches, homemade soup and even live crabs. “We pride ourselves on being a diverse market by not having too many duplicate products,” Cheryl said. Since opening, Cheryl said the market has seen steady growth and today, it’s well attended each Tuesday with both repeat customers and also first-time visitors combing through the items to find a delicious buy. She said in the coming months, the market hopes to continue to expand its availabilities, adding that she’d challenge any potential customer hearing about it for the first time to spend a Tuesday afternoon in downtown Houma. You won’t regret it, Cheryl said. “If you never have been to this market, try it out,” she said. “You never know who you will see or what you can buy.” POV

BIG HEALTH BENEFITS OF
LEGUMES There’s a possibility that you’ve heard of legumes, and an even bigger chance that you’ve eaten these more times than you can count. Legumes are part of the vegetable family that includes beans, lentils, peas and peanuts. The most popular beans are kidney beans, navy beans, garbanzo beans and sugar snap peas. Most legumes can be found in dry, canned or frozen forms and are a cost effective way to add protein, fiber and other key nutrients to our diet. Even though they’re tiny, they come packed with health benefits, including:
Dietary Fiber: Legumes are loaded with fiber, which helps regulates the body and can help decrease your risk of gutrelated illnesses.
Protein: Help build and repair tissue, satisfy hunger and increase energy with a plant-based protein.
Vitamins & Minerals: Majority of legumes are high in vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium, zinc, phosphorus and magnesium.
Boosts Heart Health: Low in sodium and fat, legumes have been shown to decrease cholesterol, blood pressure and inflammation. Aids in Weight Loss: Legumes are low-calorie and nutrient dense foods so you can optimize your calories.

FUN FACTS While flowers are often selected today for their color or scent, did you know that in the Victorian era, the flowers you sent to another conveyed a specific message? Each flower has a symbolic meaning, which can vary even between the different colors of the same flower. For example, the carnation: the pink variation means “I’ll never forget you” while the yellow was used for romantic rejection.

Though the distance between Thibodaux and Auburn University may be far, the local mother and daughter team of Elaine and Megan Waguespack stays connected through a close bond and an art business born from a shared love of painting. “We just love painting together,” said Elaine. “When [Megan comes] home, it’s usually for a short period of time, but I feel like we always at least try to put a little time aside to paint together. It’s something we have in common and that we love.” The pair began Waguespack Art, a commission-based business, during the middle of Megan’s senior year of high school. After receiving positive responses to photos of some of their paintings that they shared on Elaine’s Facebook page, Megan was inspired to create a social media presence for showcasing their work. “I remember the day I had painted a couple of things and I took pictures and she’s like, ‘Post it,’ and …it was the biggest step,” said Elaine. “First, I posted to my personal page [some] swamp scenes, and then from there Megan created Waguespack Art on Instagram and Facebook.” “For me, I had started painting these paintings of Our Lady of Guadalupe…and a lot of people would see the Our Lady of Guadalupe and they were like, ‘Wow, I really like that,’” said Megan. “We just posted it once on her Facebook and people loved it.” Though the business came about recently, painting is no new venture for the Waguespacks, whose earliest memories revolve around art.

“I remember always liking painting and drawing and anything with art like as long as I can remember,” said Megan. “When I was little, we would have those big roles of paper…and we would just paint over this whole role of paper, and we would just be like covered in paint, and it would be so much fun.” In the time since Waguespack Art began, Megan and Elaine have gone on to have their art showcased at festivals like the Art Walk in downtown Thibodaux, with Elaine even creating the poster for the 2017 Acadia Music Fest. Megan and Elaine describe the initial reaction to their work as scary.

“[It was] kind of scary [and] overwhelming at times,” said Elaine. “I want them to be happy and to love what they’re getting and to look at it and have these happy thoughts, so it’s kind of fun in a way, and it’s a little nerve-wracking too.”

Megan and Elaine’s subject matter spans from abstract images to Louisiana themes like birds and marshes, all of which are drawn from their own lives and the beauty around them. Their strongest influence comes from their Catholic faith. “I really got started with religious art,” said Megan. “Growing up going to Catholic school and being surrounded by really cool images…I would sit around and look at the pictures and be like, ‘How can I paint that…the way I like to paint things?’” The Waguespacks have worked both as a team on pieces and worked individually. Though they share similar approaches to painting, the fact that their styles differ in some areas allows for them to critique each another’s work and to learn from one another. “I’d say we definitely have similar but very different styles, so [we use] ideas from each other,” said Megan, “but also I know

A pre-med student at Auburn University, Megan has had to learn to balance her work with the demands of college life. For her, painting acts as a stress-reliever, and she plans to continue with it as she moves into medical school.
The Waguespacks believe that commissioned art like theirs is special because of its uniqueness and because of the care put into making sure the customer is satisfied with what they are getting.

MEDI-SPA TREATMENTS Visiting a spa is a great way to pamper yourself and enjoy beauty or relaxation treatments. A medical spa can offer you the benefits of relaxation, as well as additional nonsurgical services that require medical supervision.

The biggest difference between a medical spa, also known as a medi-spa, and a regular spa is that the former is supervised by a medical professional such as a board-certified dermatologist. Because of this, they can offer more advanced, customized treatment plans that mix and match medical and cosmetic services to produce more effective and longer lasting results. SLMA Dermatology Clinic’s Meghan Mella is a master aesthetician and massage therapist with more than ten years of experience in the spa and cosmetic industry. Medical aestheticians, like Meghan, provide advanced skincare that ranges from analyzing skin types to performing a wide range of noninvasive skin treatments. “Working in a medi-spa under the supervision of Dermatologists gives me access to provide a wider range of services for my clients,” said Meghan. “Having board-certified dermatologists

Calming environment – A medi-spa offers the calm and relaxing environment of a spa with the expertise and professional environment of a medical dermatology clinic. EATING HEALTHY Everyone says they want to eat better – and while most people know that means more fruits and veggies, and less sugary snacks, soda and fatty foods, there’s far more to it. Eating well involves making smart choices daily. It can be challenging, but the foods you choose can make a difference.
• Limit excessive sodium. • Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. But what if you aren’t a fan? Is there a way to make veggies tastier, and ensure you won’t get bored of your fresh, healthy meals? To keep vegetables tasty and your diet exciting, always choose a variety of veggies – and prepare them in different ways. Many different vegetables are great fresh, but they can also be roasted, mashed, or steamed. Mixing up the way you prepare your veggies will help keep things interesting.
March is the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics National Nutrition Month – and it’s an excellent time to learn more about ways you can eat healthier, and “Go Further with Food.” Once you figure out how to make the most informed food choices, it can become a healthy habit. If you’re considering dieting to try and lose weight, understand that no one diet is made for everyone. You might have to try a few different diets, and choose what works best for you. In general though, there are a few things to remember: • Always keep fresh fruits and vegetables on hand. • Incorporate whole grains into your daily diet. • Choose foods low in saturated fats. • Cut back on processed foods.
As you begin incorporating different flavors and tastes with your vegetables, you’ll likely find new favorites – and you’ll want to make them again (and again). Eating well can be a great experience, filled with culinary adventures. A healthy, balanced diet is important at any age. By incorporating healthy foods into your diet, you’re changing your eating habits for the better – and giving your body the fuel it needs to keep you moving in the right direction.

D.C., DOGRIE, AND
DULAC LET US HANDLE EVERYTHING ELSE!
I will not be visiting Washington, D.C., this spring. Each year for the past six, I’ve been attending an annual meeting there as a member of a national science committee. Alas, I am now term-limited, having dutifully served two terms. But I’ll miss spending weekends after those meetings visiting what have become favorite places. Each year, for example, I’d visit the National Gallery of Art to see the changing exhibits. In an ironic way, I’d get excited to visit the Gallery’s East Wing where all the modern art was displayed. Harboring a bit of an artistic streak myself, I would get encouraged by the dripping figures of welded metal hanging from the ceiling, and the stream-of-consciousness films in the little theater, and every Rothko painting that’s basically a square block of color on a canvas. “I can do that, too!” I’d tell myself. The National Gallery is not the only place I’d miss. There’s the Natural History Museum with fossils of prehistoric crustaceans and aquaria of huge spidery crabs that would make any Cajun salivate, despite the fact that each would take a 55-gallon drum to boil and an hour to peel. Then there’s the Library of Congress and that cozy Louisiana collection in the basement with its six-foot ceilings above a dangling network of pipes and conduits that, like the Mississippi River, must drain the collections from the northern states on the floors above. And there’s the wonderful kitchen exhaust cloud from that Cuban restaurant on 9th Street that will lift you off the ground and float you helplessly through the doors and to your table inside.

Though favorites, those places are not my one absolute favorite place. That place would be the National Mall. No, the “Mall” is not a large shopping center with stores selling red-white-and-blue clothing, patriotic jewelry, and miniature Washington Monument key chains, all at Neiman Marcus prices. Rather, the Mall is the huge open area between the Capital Building and the Lincoln Memorial, around which stand the major Smithsonian museums as well as the Cherry Blossom trees. There’s a couple of antique-looking hot dog and ice cream stands here and there and plenty of park benches from which you can sit and enjoy the grandeur of it all. Beyond the steamed hot dogs and buns, the Mall is my favorite because it’s a great place to walk. Instead of pavement, what you get to walk on is gravel. Not big chunks of limestone or granite, this is a fine, smallgrade kind of gravel that makes walking pleasing. Just like eating gratons back home, there’s something pleasing about crunching sounds, and your shoes will be making such sounds as they grind the pebbles against themselves. The sound is almost inspiring and heroic, like you’re walking

atop boulders and crushing mountains. When I boldly walk there crunching gravel beneath my mighty feet, I always think of the song, “Voodoo Child” by Jimi Hendrix. The first lines from the song are “Well, I stand up next to a mountain/And I chop it down with the edge of my hand.” In this case, it’s the edge of my feet. So, there I was, a native of coastal Louisiana, breeze-walking from the National Gallery of Art to the hot dog stand while crunching gravel and singing a Hendrix tune to himself. Did that each year for six years. This may not seem thrilling to most people in PoV country because we don’t get to see rocks on a regular basis. By the time the particles of chopped down mountains flow through the river and across the coast and get to us in Dogrie or Dulac, they aren’t even gravel but rather an ultrafine silt more suitable for mudpack facials. Given fertilizer runoff and all the things draining from chicken farms in Arkansas, however, I advise against such cosmetic activity. Nowadays, we import rocks and gravel and use them for our driveways and roadbeds. In the olden days, however, we wholly depended on the local environment for such building material. Like the ancestral Native Americans taught us, we used shells. Coastal Louisiana is home to the largest population of marsh clams in the world, and, together with oysters, their shells helped us build roads and walkways over our marshy lands for over a century. I may miss walking on the gravel in D.C., but being back home this spring I have come to realize what I really miss. POV
