Ialmost here. It feels as if we skipped

t’s hard to believe summer is already

winter all together. Aside from a few days of heavy coats, we here in PoV country didn’t have much of an opportunity to enjoy the chill, but something tells me many of us won’t be complaining as the first warm days line the calendar. For Fallon Ellender-Chauvin, much of her business depends on those warm days synonymous with south Louisiana. The yoga instructor has combined her practice and love of the water to create Calypso’s Bayou Paddleboarding Company. Offered at local pools and as part of excursions, Fallon teaches participants the fundamentals of yoga all while balanced atop a paddleboard. Learn how to paddle toward inner peace with Fallon on page 34. Warmer weather also means Thibodaux boutique owners Katherine and Jeanne Gianelloni can usher in the latest summer styles at Sole Sisters. The shoe store was recently purchased by the sisters and they are cultivating a one-of-a-kind collection of sandals and sneakers sure to impress. Learn why the Gianellonis love calling downtown home on page 18. You’ll also meet Rebecca Landry and Eloise Collins this month, business owners who see the next few months as a step in the next chapter of their journeys.

8

May 2017 Point of Vue Magazine

Eloise Collins is on the cusp of opening the first home for those who have aged out of the foster care system. A house on the edge of downtown Houma was completely remodeled by Eloise and her husband and now Eloise is working hard to generate the funding necessary to put in the final pieces to the puzzle and welcome the first residents home. Discover the story of Liberty Dwelling on page 22. Though Rebecca Landry won’t be working this summer, she will be spending time with her family and preparing for her next orders of intricate confections. The Houma cake artist works nearly around the clock, creating some of the most elaborate cakes around. The talent behind The BEKery takes you inside her studio on page 36. Whether you love it or love to hate it, warm weather is slowly taking hold here. Take a cue from this month’s features and try something new, make a fresh start, or be more mindful about spending time with the ones you love. POV

My, How Times Have Changed

Iin a movie theater. Something about

can’t even tell you the last movie I saw

my flip-flops sticking to the floor just didn’t interest me these days so I stayed away. Then “Beauty and the Beast” premiered and things changed. A Dolby screen had been installed in a nearby theater and the thought of lounging in plush recliners while noshing on overpriced Sno-Caps was too much to resist. So I forked out the extra money for what promised to be an experience like no other and I went. That’s when I realized how quickly things change. In the concession queue, I scanned the counter looking for the ICEE machine. It was mid-day, I’d just eaten lunch, and I was notorious for falling asleep as soon as the lights dimmed. Throw in a comfy recliner and I knew

sugar was the only way I’d see this whole movie. Except…no ICEEs to be found. After following entirely too close to a man with an empty cup, I discovered a self-serve machine now sitting in the hallway, perfect for refills mid-show. After filling my cup with a swirl of frozen syrupy Coke and a hint of strawberry, I wandered to the theater and found my pre-selected seat. “Well, this is cool,” I thought, “But did I really pay $35 for this?” Aside from ample foot space and walls which gave each row a secluded feel, this was nothing more than a glorified room full of seats. And the stupid chair didn’t even recline! After five minutes of discretely poking on a square on the armrest that looked like it might be of some help, an eight-

year-old slid next to me and by some source of wizardry, was cracked back and enjoying his popcorn within 15 seconds. “How?,” I muttered to myself, punching the square angrily. And then, as if the cinematic skies had opened, my legs began to lift, my seatback reclined, and the familiar booming soundtrack reverberated through the theater and my chair. Maybe the movies hadn’t changed after all. In fact, maybe they were even better than before. POV

New House, Who Dis?

Aon a house on The List of Jonah. And few short months ago, I put closing

while I still think the process of getting to closing to be a process quite similar to pulling teeth, the actual closing took only about 30 minutes. The waiting took quite a long time, but we are officially homeowners…yay! Over the last month, my time not working on PoV has been spent fixing up the new home and putting the Jonah spin on it (as much as I’m allowed to at least). In true Jonah fashion, my Playstation 4 was the first item I brought in, and my Harry Potter robe (Gryffindor, of course) is hanging in the closet along with my Green Arrow costume. You can also find Cokes in the refrigerator and ground meat in the freezer waiting to become what I

affectionately call “Spaghetts,” which is really just a ground meat spaghetti with Ragu. We’ve also been making quite a number of fixes to the house including, but not limited to, adding wood to the attic for storage and walking purposes, caulking a few cracks, painting the master bedroom, fixing, breaking, and replacing a toilet, and the usual cleaning process that comes with moving into a new home. I must say, people were not lying when they told me that there is always something that needs to be done when you own a house. It’s been a tumultuous few weeks, but things are finally starting to settle down and I’m beginning to acclimate myself to this new home. And maybe I’ll have furry friend to share the house with

someday soon…who knows?! But that is an idea that I would not repudiate. In moving, I had to say goodbye to a rent house that sheltered me for the better part of three years. Many great memories were had there, and I hope the next tenants will be able to enjoy it as much as I did. However, all things must come to an end, and it’s time to start making new and good memories in the new place, which is something I’m most definitely looking forward to. POV JONAH GIROIR is a feature writer for Point of Vue Magazine. He’s looking forward to hosting many friendship gatherings at his new house, which will likely consist of movies, watching wrestling, grilling and UNO.

The Observer

In the End Imorning. Same drive. Same kids. bring my kids to school every

Same driver. This morning, this is how the discussion went: “I have 53 friends at school,” says the 7-year-old. The eight-year-old quickly bounces back with “That’s impossible. No one can have that many friends.” “There’s no way that many people even like you,” chimes in the 12-year-old. Soon, they’re all talking so loudly that my van sounds like a madhouse. I can’t help thinking that if their friends would hear them at this moment, they would all have zero friends. I stop myself from slamming on the brakes and making them all grow silent. I am very tempted to shout at all of them that I’m their mother, but if they don’t quit arguing, I am about to resign. They pile out of the van, still arguing. A teacher greets them, smiling, as she says, “Mine are the same way. How can they have so much to argue about early in the morning?” I have no idea. Their arguments vary, but the raised level of voices remains

the same. Some days are sweet, but if I’m honest, there seems to be more of these crazy everybody-hollering-overeverybody days than peaceful days with compliant kids who love each other. This morning’s drive also reeked of a mildew smell in my van because the night before one of the kid’s water jugs tipped over, which helped our van smell mustier than a junior high boys’ locker room. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I think “these are the good days.” But another part of my brain sometimes screams “I would pay anything for just a few moments of peace.” The hardest things are the best things, says author Ann Voskamp. She should know. She’s raised six children and learned that life throws us way more than we can handle. Maybe the kids are so loud because I’ve learned to tune out anything softer than a shout. I’ve promised to lean in and listen, but some days I’ve learned to simply slide by without ever hearing a heart. I’ve corrected without concerning myself with why they need the

correction. I’ve been more concerned over public appearance than their precious person within. Somebody give me a “how-to” manual on how to do this well because every day can feel a little bit like I’m drowning and gulping for air. Then there are the kind words from others that spur me on. The teacher at the conference for the kid who refuses to do work, who mentions that he has the sweetest heart. The neighbor who compliments on how well my kids play together. The sweetest prayer by the 10-year-old for his friend’s grandmother, who had passed away. “Help him to remember how good their time together was.” It’s my prayer, too. Help me to remember every day the goodness of this time together. Even the loud moments. Even the fighting that never seems to end. May it all in the end, be good. POV JAIME DISHMAN blogs at

wning and operating their own shoe store Osisters, was always a dream for the Gianelloni Jeanne and Katherine, as they grew

up in nearby Donaldsonville. But those dreams were put on hold for a little while as they both headed to Nicholls State University and found a second home in Thibodaux. After graduating, Katherine found a job as the university’s Alumni Engagement Coordinator, while Jeanne took her fashion sense to Salon Moxie as a hair stylist/makeup artist. And while they still hold these jobs, the opportunity they had been dreaming about presented itself, and they knew they had to jump. After years of working at Queeny’s Boutique, Jeanne developed a rapport with the owners and formed a love for the store and downtown area. When the previous owners of Sole Sisters left, there was an opening for the Gianelloni sisters to take their love for shoes to the next level and put their stamp on a revitalized downtown Thibodaux. “The opportunity kind of just fell in our laps. [Queeny’s] asked if we would be interested in taking over the shoes and selling shoes at the store, and of course I was all excited about it because I love downtown and I love being here,” Jeanne recalls.

And their combined love for fashion made it easy for Katherine to jump into the fold as well. “We’ve always loved shoes. We wear the same size, so we fight in each other’s closets a lot,” Katherine explains. “Our style is very different, so sometimes I have to rein her in and she has to help me step out, so it’s been a really good match so far.” “We’ve always been into fashion and clothing, so it’s just been something that we’ve always loved to do. So now that we have a shoe store, it’s something we get to continue enjoying,” Jeanne says. “…and doing it together,” Katherine adds. Growing up, Jeanne and Katherine always joked about owning a shoe store and naming it “Sister, Sister” after the famous Tia and Tamara Mowry show from the ‘90s. “It’s funny whenever this actually happened that we kind of got to live that dream of when we were little girls, so this is the start, I would say, to that,” Jeanne says. However, juggling full-time jobs while also owning a shoe store is no easy feat for the sisters, especially when they have to manage finding time to make decisions together around Katherine’s busy schedule of engaging alumni and Jeanne’s many appointments. “It’s interesting because we both have completely different jobs in two different industries, so the timing of things is a little difficult because when I get home she sometimes still has clients. So the weekends are when povhouma.com

we really sit down and figure out the objectives for the next week, what are we selling and not selling, and what we need to order,” Katherine explains. “It’s been a wonderful experience. It was so much fun getting to design the store with my sister and getting to pick things out. I enjoy working with her because of course she’s my sister, but she helps ground me at times, keeps me on task, and is very organized,” Jeanne adds. “It’s a blast. It’s just been a lot of fun.” Branding and customer service has been at the forefront in helping Jeanne

and Katherine differentiate the store from other businesses in the area. “We really wanted to brand ourselves on the Sole Sisters and the fact that we’re two sisters getting to do this business together. Everyone can kind of relate to that. Like your sister may not be your blood sister, but maybe your fashion sister,” Jeanne explains. “Our styles are very different, so we have a lot of different kinds of shoes and we like to get different perspectives too. We want older people to be able to come in and shop and still find shoes, but also the people in high school and middle

If someone sees a pair of shoes on our social media pages, and they don’t live around here, we will order their shoes and deliver it to their house.” Downtown Thibodaux has become, in a sense, a second home for Katherine and Jeanne and both feel privileged to be part of an area that not only holds a special place in their hearts, but is offering a host of exciting opportunities for the people that call Lafourche Parish home. “Ever since I’ve been living in Thibodaux, I absolutely fell in love with the downtown area. I feel like our downtown is so different from any other downtown. The charm that it has here is something that I haven’t found anywhere else,” Jeanne says. “Just to be able to be a business owner and be a part of the downtown Thibodaux community has always been a dream of mine. It’s just something that is very rewarding and I hope that downtown can continue to grow.” “We help and support downtown,” Katherine says. “We shop local and to now be on the other side of it is very rewarding.” POV

Christian music softly floats out of the kitchen and the plush seating area and dining room invite visitors to take a seat and relax for a little while. The hard work and determination of Eloise Collins is evident at every turn of the Houma establishment, soon to be a sanctuary for those aging out of the foster care system. A fresh paint job was applied inside and out, four beds await its first residents and a lot of love for those that will soon call this place home abounds. The idea of Liberty Dwelling is the result of Eloise’s work in mental health, a career that has brought to light the harsh realities today’s adolescents who 22

do not have responsible parents face. “I get to go in the homes and schools. Most of these kids with behavioral, emotional issues…When I see all these kids with all these issues, sometimes it’s not the kid’s fault. More than likely it’s parenting. I was like, 'Gosh, how could you teach these parents something?' It’s not like they are bad parents. They really just don’t know better. So from that, I was wondering how could I give back and teach parenting skills.” Currently, 4,000 children live in foster care in Louisiana, according to the Department of Family and Children Services. Of that number, 54 reside in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes and 15 are set to age out of the system within the next year. Locally, there are

not many options available to these people and as Eloise explains, many find themselves homeless, jobless or facing other challenges. “My whole thing is that it’s like a preventative method,” Eloise explains of Liberty Dwelling’s philosophy. “If I could teach young adults, before they become parents…They age out of the system at 18. That’s such a young age to me to be out there. What happens? I see there’s a high probability for them to become pregnant, have kids, and the cycle continues.” The residence, situated on the edge of downtown Houma, was completely gutted and remodeled out of Eloise and her husband’s pocketbook. Sofas, tables, bed sheets and more were donated by

community members and as for the house itself…it’s a place Eloise holds close to her heart not only for what it will be but also for what it was. “The lady who lived here, she and I were friends. I moved here in 2001 and we became friends in 2005 right after Katrina. I cooked for her, helped her, even sat there and just listened to her. She always loved to talk…When she died, she had one grandson who was around my age. She was always worried – ‘Oh my gosh, when I die what will happen to him because he won’t be able to take care of the mortgage.’ He had to sell the house and I bought it. I was thinking so much about what I wanted to do with it. When I looked at the sentimental value of it, I wanted to give back.” In addition to providing a safe, comfortable home for up to four girls 18 or older, Liberty Dwelling also aims to provide a variety of services to those that call this place home. A house mom will reside with the residents to provide guidance, those wishing to further their schooling will be provided the resources to do so, and they will also learn essential life

Counselling will also play an integral part in the process and residents will be allowed to live at Liberty Dwelling until they are roughly 25, or until Eloise feels they are prepared to handle life independently. “We will help them get into school if they want to do that or give them the resources to find a job. Whatever they desire, we will have people to walk them along,” Eloise explains. Although the journey has been long for Eloise and the board members who support the effort, she has faith that good things are on the horizon. Her future plans include opening another location for boys and securing funding to complete the final improvements necessary to begin moving in residents. in its walls. Situated on a large lot with mature fruit trees, the craftsman style house is now home to Gary and Naomi Landry. Originally a three-story home, the third floor was claimed by Hurricane Betsy. After the storm, it was eliminated and became a two story house with a full attic. The first floor was once a basement with dirt floors where legend says animal pelts were hung to dry and moonshine was crafted. Only the third owners of the home, Gary and Naomi purchased the home in 2014 from Jeff and Lindsay Lasseigne. As the owner of Jeff Lasseigne Construction, he completed the renovation himself. The first floor underwent the biggest transformation which is now living space, including two bedrooms, a full bathroom, laundry room, kitchen, wine cellar and entertainment space. Opening directly onto the back patio, the family enjoys entertaining outdoors as well. Upstairs on the second floor the original wood floors were refinished and each space was updated while remaining authentic to the style of the home. Under the Scope

Feeding the Letter-Eaters (Pt. 1) Hreminds us of many things: craw-

ere in PoV country, May inevitably

fish by-the-sack, lovebugs by-the-swarm, and pis-en-lis by-the-side-of-the-road. Like the rest of the country, we are also reminded of the end of school years and summer travel. This May, I’m reminded of all the little summer excursions of my childhood, particularly how I occupied myself while my travel captors were conducting business. In the days before they spent their profits on spotty internet access, previously frozen microwaved breakfasts, and carpet deodorizer, hotels would provide letterhead printed in raised letters on fancy, onionskin paper. It was so pleasing to drag an ink pen cursively across that paper - or, in my early days, a pencil or crayon. And it was thrilling to think that someone would tear into the fine, lick-seal envelopes to read and reply. Parting with letters was the difficult part; I never handed my letters to concierges because I couldn’t bear anyone touching my precious writing other than the intended recipient. So, I resorted to slipping envelopes into the slim, brass-plated slots labeled “Mail.” And, always, I wrote letters in duplicate in case I would need to read them again one day. Like recently. When I was in first grade, I had traveled for a business weekend with my dad to Poplarville, Mississippi. I was proactively planning for Christmas when I penned this business letter: Dear Santa: I hope that you are feeling well and that your nose is not leaking from the cold. I noticed that the toys I received last year look just like those in the 32

Sears catalog. This year, I want a microscope, but Sears only has the monocular kind. If you truly procure from catalogs, I wish for the binocular microscope from Edmund Scientific Company. It’s the one shown on the cover of their current catalog. With all due respect, the wooden microscopes made by the elves in your television show, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, are just no good. I know this because I had a wooden Fisher-Price model several years ago. I never saw any paramecia or amoebas no matter how much stinky water I put it under. Also during first grade, Richard Nixon had been newly elected President. I learned all about him from my parents and grandparents who remembered him from the 1950s: Dear Mr. Nixon: How are things in Washington? We have something in common. I am President of my school’s Checkers Club. My favorite thing to shout out in class is “King me!” I bet you like to shout that out as well. Our Checkers Club has nothing to do with your pet dog named Checkers, the one you purchased in 1952 before I was born. It’s the dog that people accused you of misusing campaign funds to buy. I’m glad you got to keep him. I’d like to do something greater in life, like getting elected President of my school’s Chess Club. We don’t have a club yet because we don’t have a chess set. If you still have some of those funds, please consider sending some to my school. For only $1.99, we can get a nice plastic chess set at the Western Auto store. We will make our own chessboard with crayons and big paper. Please send cash or a check to the address below. Everyone is a Democrat here, so

please do not put your name on the envelope because I may not receive it. It would not be long before I used hotel stationery to write my first love letter. In second grade, I became enamored with a lightly-freckled, wide-smiling brunette receptionist who wore a blue-andwhite polka dot dress with a red ribbon. Dear Hotel Greeter: I wish I knew your real name because I think you are gorgeous. I would write you a poem today, but I have a science project to present later and I’m using only that side of my brain so that I can win first place. When I grow up, I want to study genetics to understand how you were created. I hope I can create another girl like you closer to my age. If you are interested, you can help me with this project. I will be free this evening after I win. Unbeknownst to me, I had penned the most innocent yet preciously confident pick-up line in all of young scientist history. Years would go by. I realized that I was never going to see the Greeter again. I would never have that microscope. Nixon would resign before sending money for our chess set. And none of the letters I wrote on elegant, hotel stationery would be answered. For a long time, I believed that they had been eaten by the many brass-plated mouths labeled “Mail” that I had fed over my travels. Then, one day, I learned about postage. POV

Waves ONE WITH THE

Trelaxing place for many. The

he water can be a calming and

beautiful bodies of water in south Louisiana help shape this place we call home in PoV country, so it seems only fitting to combine the calming elements of yoga with an environment that enhances the sense of peacefulness. Having discovered yoga’s ability to increase flexibility, improve respiration, energy and vitality, tone muscles, and create an overall better frame of mind, Fallon Ellender-Chauvin, who grew up on the waters of Pointe-auxChenes, knew bringing SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) Yoga to the area, was a no brainer. “I’ve always grown up on the water. I fell in love with paddleboarding about eight plus years ago, and then I started practicing yoga about that time and it’s changed by life,” The owner of Calypso’s Bayou Paddleboarding Company explains. “I got to a part in my life where I did my training in yoga and I wanted something different. I didn’t want to be in the studio all the time. So, my first thing was to do SUP Yoga.” After a stint in Florida where she saw how popular the practice was, Fallon knew her bayou roots needed this fun and new spin on yoga. In April, Fallon led her first class of the season at the Nicholls State University Pool, leading a yoga class while participants balance atop boards designed specifically for the practice. “That was my first passion as far as bringing paddleboarding to south Louisiana. I had moved away to Tampa, and it’s all over down there,” she recalls. “They don’t have that here. They need something around here to keep our younger generation here because if not, they’ve been moving to different states or going to different cities.” The idea behind SUP Yoga started with Yoga Girl Rachel Brathen, an instructor and author who brought the 34

May 2017 Point of Vue Magazine

practice to light. From there, Fallon shaped the practice into an offering that she now conducts both in the pool and as part of an excursion in places like Chauvin and Grand Isle. “You have mainstream yoga in the studio, but sometimes you get into a rut in your practice, so you need to revive your passion again,” the yoga teacher explains. “From there, I thought this would be perfect. Yoga and the love of water together has created a really cool community here. It’s my passion and I love it.” And the health benefits are wonderful too as simply being on a paddleboard is a full body workout. “You have the sense of calming with the nature surrounding and you also have this beautiful power of water itself that influences you in your practice but also reminds you to keep soft and be

open to what’s around you. It’s also a great core workout,” she describes of the workout which begins slowly and moves into more dynamic moves throughout each class. “You get out of your head more than in a studio and you just get to be yourself. It opens up a total new practice and you also learn things. In downward facing dog, some people push more on their right side than on their left side, but when you come to the board you’re like ‘woah’ and you’re automatically adjusted.” Fueled by memories of her family’s camp in Grand Isle, Fallon occasionally adds SUP Excursions to the mix, which offer attendees a chance to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying the benefits of the practice. And through working with the port of commission in Grand Isle, Fallon has discovered the perfect place for these excursions

where participants are in 3-4 foot water and surrounded by tons of fish, perfect for future fishing excursions on paddleboards she plans to create. In just a little over a year, Fallon has created a community of SUP yoga enthusiasts who have supported her and is eager to see more people, regardless of size, age, or fitness level, try their hand at a practice that is providing both enjoyment and improved wellness. “I always wanted to move from here, but lately I cannot leave this community. It’s something and I want to grow with it, so in the near future we’re going to set up a paddleboard shop and see what’s available here and what people do,” she says. “Just let go of what you know and be open to try something new. I think it’s fun and it invites new things into your practice.” POV

It’s these opportunities and the joy on each customer’s face when they see their cake that Rebecca says make this passion of hers so rewarding. “You don’t have to decide what you want to be when you grow up when you’re 18…If I had even tried it once and just said, ‘Oh, it’s too hard’, but I kept doing it. Tegg hunt at school last month, we were The morning before Jackson’s Easter

hustling about, getting things ready to leave the house for the day. I had handed him his Easter pail and explained, “This is for all the eggs you’re going to find at school.” I came back into the living room to find him quietly reaching down to the floor, picking up a scoop of air and placing it in his bucket. “Whatcha doing, buddy?” I asked curiously. “Finding Easter eggs, mamma!” came the excited reply as Jackson proudly held out his empty bucket. I took one look at my happy child, glanced at my smiling husband, and set down my coffee. We took his bucket and proceeded to ask, “Wow! SO many! What colors are they?” And the conversation continued. Sure, we might have all been late, but we were happy to play along. The mind of a child is such an amazing thing. Our bedtime routine includes visiting about what he did that day. It often starts, “I went to Gaga and Papa’s. I ate soup and played with my blocks.” But then he throws in: “Papa and JackJack are going on a rocket ship to the moon!” Umm… What? Sure kid, send me a postcard! Better yet, can Daddy and I go too? So far he has been a pirate on a giant ship, the driver of a green jeep, the lookout on a wild safari, and a fisherman that keeps catching snapping turtles instead of fish. The pirate is looking for treasure. The green jeep is bumpy. The lookout always sees animals like giraffes and flying elephants. The fisherman requests a stick that can become a fishing pole, a magic wand, and a sword. Imagination is so important to a child’s development. Through imaginary play, communication skills, problem solving, and other aspects of cognitive development are developed. Reading books, creative play with household tasks, …Anything can get them thinking outside the box! Everything that was created by man is the product of human imagination. Nutrition Tips for Women Wneeds to support staying in

omen have unique nutrition

shape, losing weight and improving their overall health. Here are some tips women can practice daily to improve their nutrition. Eat Breakfast This is a simple but often overlooked tip. Many diets emphasize the importance of breakfast as it helps to fuel your day and maintain weight. Take time in the morning for simple breakfast foods such as peanut butter on a whole wheat waffle, yogurt with granola, or low-fat cream cheese on a whole wheat muffin. Limit your coffee intake and prep healthy mid-morning snacks to prevent overeating at lunch. Eat Foods Rich in Iron Pre-menopausal women need to ensure that they eat foods rich in iron

because it is important for red blood cell production. It also maintains healthy skin, hair and nails. It is recommended that women 19-50 get 18 mg each day. After a woman begins menopause, men and women need the same amount of iron - 8 mg daily. Adding foods such as meat, shellfish, beans, lentils and enriched cereals to your diet are natural and healthy ways to add iron to your diet. Eat More Fruits and Veggies Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients women need to support a healthy lifestyle. Dark greens contain vitamin A, C, fiber and phytonutrients. They also contain folate which is important to prevent birth defects. Fruits are essential in providing antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to help you live longer and look better.

Choose Whole Grain Options Replacing white, processed foods with whole grain is an easy change to make to your diet. Whole grains reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some forms of cancer. Whole-grain diets also improve bowel health. On trips to the grocery store be sure to read the label and ingredients carefully to ensure that you are purchasing whole wheat products. Limit Saturated Fat According to the American Heart Association, “Eating foods that contain saturated fats raises the level of cholesterol in your blood. High levels of LDL cholesterol in your blood increase your risk of heart disease and stroke”. Such foods are fatty beef, pork, poultry with skin, butter, cheese and whole/ reduced fat dairy. Limit/replace these with fruits, vegetables, nuts and the like.

everything I am capable of doing in order to make them the healthiest version of themselves. WHAT INTERESTS YOU MOST ABOUT WORKING AT THE SLMA COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CLINIC? Being part of the SLMA team offers a unique and friendly working environment and a true team mentality, which is good for physicians and our patients. WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN THE CLINIC? I primarily am responsible for seeing medically complex patients, but I also handle some minor procedures such as joint injections. Additionally, I communicate with hospitalists on overall patient care needs.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU? My parents. WHAT ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT PROFESSIONALLY? My priority is ensuring good patient care and being available and having the time to listen to patients’ health problems. Health Benefits Happiness “ONCE YOU REPLACE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS WITH POSITIVE ONES, YOU’LL START HAVING POSITIVE RESULTS.” - WILLIE NELSON

A important conference held at

t the end of 2016 there was an

Harvard University. The theme was on the question “Can Happiness Lead toward Health?” “The ironic thing about modern health care is that it isn’t really about health at all,” said Laura Kubzaansky, a professor of Social and Behavioral Science at the Harvard Center for Health and Happiness. “It’s about disease care.” The conference discussed findings that there is a connection between wellbeing and health, finding that people who had a greater enjoyment of life lived longer and had more disabilityfree years. Further work explored why people who are more satisfied with life are more likely to exercise, eat fruits and vegetables, sleep better, and are less likely to abuse harmful substances. Other studies indicated that those who report being less happy have higher levels of the stress hormone Cortisol. The adrenal glands, perched on top of the kidneys, make Cortisol in an attempt to help your body handle stressful situations. While a little Cortisol is good ( fight or flight energy) in response to short-term stressors, it becomes a health problem when the body starts making too much, too often. Constant stress and high Cortisol

levels are related to unhealthy issues like a low immune system, damage to the circulatory system, and weakened bones. A recent study released in April 2017 found Louisiana to be second to only Alabama as having citizens with the most stress. Researchers looked at four categories: work related stress, money related stress, family related stress, and health and safety related stress. Little surprise that Louisiana ranked first in the category of job related stress. Anyone experiencing too much stress in their lives needs to make some changes. Sure, this is easier said than done - but it is doable. Making an appointment with your doctor to examine your Cortisol levels, among other health issues, and visiting with clergy or positive friends is an important place to begin. Worrying can be helpful when it inspires one to take action and solve problems. However, when it becomes unrelenting and consuming with a focus always on worst case scenarios, worry becomes the problem. Research has shown that worry drains emotional energy, sends anxiety levels soaring and can interfere with daily life. Chronic worrying is a mental habit that can be broken - like other bad habits, it takes

discipline and motivation. It has been shown that we can train our brains to stay calm (deep breaths) and look at life, not with a negative expectation, but from a more positive perspective. Many experts agree that the single most important key to health, happiness, and longevity is avoiding worry, stress and tension. It was Mahatma Gandhi who said, “Nothing wastes the body like worry, and one who has any faith in God should be ashamed to worry about anything whatsoever.” Research will continue to point out that happiness and health are connected. Make it a goal to be more satisfied with your life - to be happy and thus healthier. Proven ways to be happier is to count your blessings daily and do something good for someone else every chance you get. POV

Intelligent Investing Meyer Financial Group

Health Insurance in Retirement t any age, health care is a priority. A When you retire, however, you will probably focus more on health care than ever before. That’s why having health insurance is extremely important. If you are 65 or older when you retire, you are likely eligible for certain Medicare health benefits. But if you retire before 65, you’ll need some way to pay for your health care until Medicare kicks in. Generous employers may offer health insurance coverage, but if your employer doesn’t, you may need to buy a private policy, extend coverage through COBRA, or purchase an individual policy. Medicare won’t pay for long-term care. You’ll need to pay out of pocket or rely on benefits from long-term care insurance or, if your assets and/ or income are low enough for you to qualify, Medicaid.

As mentioned, most Americans become entitled to Medicare when they turn 65. In fact, if you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll be automatically enrolled. However, you will have to decide if you need Part A (premium-free for most retirees) or Part B coverage. Part A (hospital insurance) can help pay for home health, hospice, and inpatient hospital care. Part B helps cover care like physician care, laboratory tests, and physical therapy. You may also enroll in a managed care plan or private fee-for-service plan under Part C if you want to pay fewer out-of-pocket costs. You may also join a Medicare prescription drug plan. You may also want to buy a Medigap policy when you sign up for Medicare Part B. These policies offer certain basic core benefits, and all but Plan A offer various

combinations of additional benefits. When you first enroll in Medicare Part B, you have a six-month Medigap open enrollment period. During that time, you have a right to buy any policy, regardless of health problems. The possibility of a stay in a nursing home weighs heavily on the minds of many older Americans. Many people at this age look into LTCI, which can cover nursing home, assisted-living, or home care costs. But don’t wait too long to buy it; you’ll need to be in good health and the older you are, the higher the premium. You may also be able to rely on Medicaid to pay for long-term care if you qualify. But check first with a financial professional or attorney experienced in Medicaid planning as the rules are complicated and can affect you and your family.
