MARY DOWNER DITCH MANAGING EDITOR OF POV

AN APPLE A DAY Health and wellness are popular buzzwords in our world today. We are starting to pay more attention to our bodies and how we treat them. From exercise to diets, we are able to research the reasons behind them and decide for ourselves if the data supports the choices we make. There are fewer fad or “crash” diets that enable you to loose a few pounds quickly and more lifestyle changes that benefit your overall health. It’s easy today to find locally harvested fresh fruits and vegetables with the emergence of our area’s local farmers’ markets. Our area also has many options when it comes to exercise, helping us stay focused on staying fit. Whether it’s in a gym or outside pounding the pavement on your own, our area has removed themselves from the sofa and starting moving towards taking charge of their own health. Personally, I’m not a very “healthy” person. Sure, I’m thin, but I don’t lead the healthiest lifestyle. My diet flat out sucks and I never exercise. I’m lucky, in that on paper, when it comes to blood work and such, the numbers say I am healthy. I focus mainly on keeping a healthy mind and spirit. My mantra is “Breathe In the Positive, Breathe Out the Negative.” Every day, I choose happiness and hope a little bit rubs off on those around me. The Health Issue focuses on overall health and wellness in the bayou region. We start the issue visiting with local dietitian Leah Porche, who was recently named the 2018 Young Dietitian of the Year. Learn about what the honor means to Leah on page 24. Summertime means the temps are rising and we are on the go a lot more. A nice, cold, refreshing smoothie is a quick and easy way to start your day or to add some colorful fun to your afternoon snack. Beginning on page 34, we provide you with a few recipes to get your creative smoothie juices flowing!

We’ve all heard about triathlons and even the Ironman event, but did you know we have a large group of athletes locally that routinely compete? Eight of these competitors took a moment to share a little insight into what it means to be an Ironman on page 44. It’s hard to constantly have to come up with new recipes for healthy dishes for your family. In this month’s Bon Appetit on page 48, four local companies share their favorite healthy recipe, from their family to yours. There’s such a connection between a healthy mind and a healthy body. Michelle Beardslee brings Eastern tradition to the South through the art of Tai Chi. We explore this beautiful and fluid form of meditation and exercise beginning on page 74. We all know the saying go big or go home, right? Adam Doiron decided it was time to get a handle on his health, became an Ironman, and is always looking forward to his next marathon. Did we mention he started this journey after becoming a living kidney donor? Learn more about Adam’s journey to reclaiming his own health on page 78. The Health Issue also features a special section called “What’s Up, Doc?” In this special section, which begins on page 50, we introduce you to some of the area’s top local doctors and find out a little bit more about what they bring to the bayou region. A special thank you this month to our Assistant Editor for the day, Bonnie Grace Moore. Bonnie is going into the 6th grade at St. Matthew’s Episcopal School and joined our team for an especially fun day, helping to create June’s issue. Be sure to check out her POV Pick on page 72. Thank you, Bonnie, for bringing such positive energy to our office!

SAY WHAT?

WHAT CHOICES DO YOU MAKE EACH DAY THAT PROMOTE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE?

CASEY | EDITOR

JASON | GENERAL MANAGER “I make efforts each day to hydrate properly, avoid sitting for long periods of time and make a least one major meal a lean, fresh salad. Three simple things that keep me energized, alert and motivated. Combined that with exercise and appropriate sleep time, these habits have helped me to maintain a healthful life in both body and mind.”

"I smile through the small stuff, I plan ahead for the big stuff and watch what I eat. I also make sure to get a little sun. Humans are like plants. Without water, sun and a good environment, we can't be healthy."

HALEY | INSURANCE AGENT/BUSINESS OWNER

"In my opinion, living healthy is not just about food. It is about being balanced in our everyday decisions that promote overall health and wellness. My husband and I try to make healthy food choices and stay active with our children. We choose for our home to be chemical and toxin free and I incorporate essential oils to stay proactive in supporting our body systems. I pray daily with my kids and for my family and we encourage positive thinking by instilling an “I can” attitude. I’ve always tried to live by the 80/20 rule with a twist–focusing on the 80 percent. Each day we try to get more of our choices to favor our health. When we mess up (because let’s be real, who doesn’t) we wake up tomorrow and try again."

SANDEL | PERSONAL TRAINER

"I believe you must have a true balance of mind, body and spirit for a healthy lifestyle. For the mind, you must pour in positive thoughts and remove all negative input. For the body, you must have a good diet, matching your goals and lifestyle. As far as whatever your religion is, have your faith, strong and true. When you have this balance, your dreams and goals are attainable and it flows onto others around you."

CHRISTY | OUTSIDE SALES & HR "The most important thing for me is to maintain a balance. I try to be very active everyday along with following my own type of 80/20 percent rule when it comes to my diet. Eating 80 percent of my whole foods, chicken, fish, vegetables and fruit then the 20 usually finds its way in on the weekends when I may want to splurge a little! Being a member of Crossfit Homebrew has opened up so many new plans and ideas when it comes to eating right and training.”

Searching as far as Fairhope, Alabama, Marty and Kelly Boquet decided to build their Parisian inspired home along the banks of the bayou. The lot they purchased featured oak trees that had been planted more than 50 years ago and was surrounded by stately homes. During the planning phase, the couple spent many days sitting under the oaks imagining what a home on their lot would look like. A considerable amount of time was spent to ensure the footprint of the home would not impact the trees, and eventually they reduced the footprint to accommodate the stately oaks.

Influenced by antiques and little treasures that had been collected over the years, as well as the French way of life, often referred to as Joie ‘de Vivre or “joy of life”, the Boquets wanted to create an unpretentious French Chateau. This style would allow the architecture of the home to compliment the oaks and not compete with them. Taking inspiration from French bakeries, especially the fun colors that bring them to life, the lighting and decor have a Parisian sensibility. Marble, unlaquered brass, colorful cabinetry, and furnishings execute the perfect touch of whimsical style while feeling authentic and welcoming. POV

JUST SHOW UP This month marks the day we celebrate fathers. Smack dab in the middle of this slightly sweaty month, we look to the men who gave us life and say thank you. This holiday feels a lot different than Mother’s Day – or am I the only one? I don’t think I am. Browse the Mother’s Day cards, then browse Father’s Day cards. Mother’s Day cards are full of flowers and sunshine and beautiful things. Father’s Day cards are sometimes sweet, sometimes a little sassy. I like sassy. Especially for Father’s Day. One year, I found a Father’s Day card about farting. Heaven forbid I even type that word for this column. But I just did. So there you have it. My dad was a good dad before books about being a good dad became a thing. He worked too much, stayed outside working on projects too late, took too little time understanding the heart of this girl. All today’s dad advice says otherwise. Spend time with them. Speak to their hearts. It’s all true. And good advice, but sometimes simply being who you are and showing up works too. I can’t imagine my dad being anything other than who he is. I’ve inherited his work ethics. I have to reign myself in from working too hard on too many different things. I also inherited his slightly offbeat sense of humor that delights in being everso-disruptive to those around him. Dad advice boils down to three words for me: Just show up. That’s what my dad did. He showed up. He took part in my life. He marched on the side of me (in a ridiculous trench coat that we still tease him about) during high school Mardi Gras parades. He taught me how to take care of my horse and raise chickens and cows. Without saying a word, he birthed in me a deep love of the outdoors. The things I love today are because of the things he loved all those years. He grows a garden and I do too. I joke with him that I’ll secretly hurt his plants to prove that I’m the better gardener.

Save YOUR date!

Because joking has always been our thing. It was then, and it is now. He calls me names. I call him names. No parenting book really says that’s the way to win your daughter’s heart, but it worked for me, so I call it a win.

I still call him daddy. (Especially when I’m trying to rope him into helping me with something. Like the time I bought an antique piano off eBay for 99 cents, and he picked it up for me out of a guy’s basement. In Ohio. Thanks, daddy.)

TM

That’s just the thing. He keeps showing up. He’s shown me more by his presence than any long talk or therapy session could ever do. Our love is proved by our presence in people’s lives. Rule out perfection because it will never happen and embrace presence. Sometimes he showed up at places I would rather him not. It’s hard to impress your high school friends when your dad is at the high school dance. I rolled my eyes at him, and he would smile a crooked smile, delighting in slightly ruining my day. He’s helped at my kids’ birthday parties, brought my oldest on an acrosscountry camping trip, helped my friend’s kids complete a complicated project, and helped me plant hedges (that died two months later, but that’s okay). He keeps showing up. So for Father’s Day, I thank him for being there. Not for being perfect. Because he wasn’t – and isn’t. But I’d rather his imperfect self show up for my family and I, than a perfect dad who spends all his time aiming for perfection instead of presence. Just show up, dads. Show up now when they’re young and they’ll ask you to show up again and again when they’re older. Love them the only way you know how. Wholeheartedly and imperfectly. POV

Many strive to be the best in their profession. They put in years of training, learning, and hands-on practicing to improve their knowledge, trade, or talent. Few hardly receive recognition from all of the hard work and commitment to excellence in their respective fields. For one local business owner, RDN, LDN, and Houma native, Leah Porche, that recognition was achieved in the form of the 2018 Young Dietitian of the Year award. Leah’s commitment to nutrition and dietetics can be traced back to her childhood. Her parents pushed for a healthy lifestyle when Leah was a child. “We always had to have whole grains. We always had to have vegetables. My mom made her own mayonnaise, granola,

and things like that,” she says. “So I grew up being the weird kid with the brown bread, the apple, and all that kind of stuff while everybody else had Doritos and white bread. That was just not allowed in our house. As a kid, it was not fair, but as an adult I’m glad I have a preference for whole grain bread over white bread.” Being a young athlete, Leah chose healthier options, like vegetables over less-healthy food. She really got into animals and went vegetarian for a year and a half when she was just 12-years-old. While she was waiting tables as an adult, Leah got a parttime job at a gym, which she says she got, “basically for the free membership.” There, she started getting into fitness

and researching it in magazines. She then came across the word “dietitian,” which she never heard of before. Although she was a general studies major at Nicholls State University, she called about their dietitian program to maybe switch her study. “One of my instructors that I ended up getting close to explained it to me: It’s all about food and nutrition and connecting for people how food and nutrition affects your body, your health, and all of those things,” Leah says. “You basically get paid to help people eat better. It seemed like the most obvious and perfect job for me.” After she received her bachelor’s degree in Dietetics from Nicholls, began and finished her internship, became June 2018 25 povhouma.com

registered and licensed and started her practice, she decided to partner with Shantelle Abshire. The two opened local Houma café, Root2Rise (R2R). This unique restaurant is not only part-café and part-juice bar, it is also part-yoga studio. Leah brings her expertise to the juice bar (the first one in Houma) and café side of R2R. Leah’s commitment to her practice and gained knowledge over the years of nutrition and dietetics has led her to receive the Young Dietitian of the Year Award, given by the State Dietetic Association. Her peers acknowledge her accomplishments and breakthroughs in the field, such as opening her own restaurant, which is uncommon for most dietitians. This got her nominated for this prestigious award that was voted on by statewide dietitians. She feels proud yet humbled that she received this honor. “Because it comes from my peers and know they selected me is pretty neat. I work with a lot of really great people,” Leah says. “I feel like there’s a lot of young dietitians in our area doing some really great things.” POV

WRITTEN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CLAYTON HOMES OF HOUMA

HOUMA’S WHERE THE HEART IS

The home buying experience can be difficult. The search for a well-built house within your budget is often a long, stressful process to go through. Fortunately, Clayton Homes of Houma has been providing quality, affordable homes as well as excellent local service to the people of Houma and its surrounding areas since 2008. “The real goal was to provide an experience here in Houma for something that was corporate and something that can be guaranteed,” says the general manager, Jude Theriot. “It’s something where people can trust, purchase, and not have a question about ‘Did I buy something that’s going to break on me or something that’s not going to be warranted?’ We are really providing something that is warranted for this area.” Jude Theriot, a Houma native, and the rest of the staff at Clayton Homes make sure to look out for all members of the community who start the home buying June 2018 28 povhouma.com

process with them. They also make sure to alleviate the stress from this tedious process. “Being from here, you see a lot of people that really need an opportunity that we can provide. Housing is really important,” Jude says. “I love what I do because every day is a challenge. No deal is the same. No experience is the same. We may be working the same thing, like a single wide in a mobile home park, and the process can be completely different because of elevation, certificate, and the permit process. It’s a new challenge for us that the customer doesn’t have to experience. It’s taking a weight off of someone else’s shoulders to make their life easier—not just from the home side, but also in the process.”

THESE AIN’T YOUR GRANDMA’S TRAILERS

Not only does Clayton Homes help the community by easing the process of obtaining new, affordable homes to locals, they also strive to work with nearby contractors. They proudly display their commitment to the region in their public statement:

“Our homes are manufactured and inspected inside of controlled environments. This process prevents weather damage and delays to the home during construction. Houma, Louisiana’s Clayton Homes makes the process of purchasing a manufactured home easy, because we truly want families to experience the dream of home ownership. We go a step further by utilizing local contractors such as BMC Construction and Zach’s Mobile Home Movers to execute that local flavor of providing the best possible purchasing experience. These local contractors partner with our service team at the home center to provide a truly genuine experience.”

To make an appointment to purchase one of Clayton Homes’ spacious, luxurious mobile homes and receive outstanding, thoughtful customer service, call (985) 872-2850 or visit their website, claytonhomeshouma.com.

It’s summer time and families are on the go! Smoothies are a healthy choice and a great way to make sure your family is getting their fruits and vegetables! These nutrient dense smoothies are quick and easy to throw together with fresh ingredients from local famers’ markets or grocery stores. Fresh produce should be your first ingredient; be sure to rinse and remove all stems and seeds before blending. You have the flexibility to use any type of milk or milk substitute you wish, such as almond or coconut milk. Just be cautious with flavored versions, as they can add an extra sweet taste to your smoothie! Adding yogurt to a smoothie helps to make it thicker and adds a bit of healthy probiotics to your concoction. Have fun in the kitchen with your kids, mixing and blending to find your favorite flavor!

While the origin of the phrase “blood, sweat and tears” is attributed to Winston Churchill, I’m pretty sure it still exists to describe a triathlete and their journey to an IRONMAN. As the story goes, John Collins, who was a Naval Officer stationed in Hawaii, started a debate with other athletes over who would be the fittest: swimmers, bikers or runners. John and his wife Judy decided to create a new competition combining the toughest endurance races on the island. The first “Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon” took place on February 18, 1978 in Waikiki. The IRONMAN competition is a true testament to physical and mental strength. The race itself consists of a 2.4-mile swim, 112 miles on a bike and a 26.2-mile run to the finish line. Being an IRONMAN is about more than finishing the race; it’s about learning what you can accomplish when you push your boundaries. On April 28, 2018, a large group of athletes from Houma packed up their gear, their families, and their support crews to compete in the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN North American Championship Texas. PoV wants to recognize and congratulate our athletes for their accomplishments and asked a few of them to share a little bit about their journey and what it means to be an IRONMAN.

Amber Berry What’s the most important lesson you’ve taken from your achievement? Nothing is impossible. Your body will do what your mind tells it. I had a stroke at birth and shouldn’t be walking and talking according to what the doctors told my parents, but I have done so much more than anyone ever expected. I have learned that everyone out on the race course has a story and so many people have overcome so much more to cross the line. I am inspired and my faith has grown through this experience.

Chris Lindsay Who or what is your biggest motivation? My biggest motivation has been watching my children compete in swimming, running, and triathlons. Their passion and drive is what I love. ADVENTURE

How much time to you dedicate to training on average in preparation for a race? For the past three years I’ve trained every week. I’ve done 7 Ironman triathlons during that three year period. Normally I train 6-8 months for a full Ironman. (Brent has completed 12 Ironmen races!)

Natalie Lindsay What is the most difficult obstacle you have to overcome to achieve your goal? Logistically, fitting in training in the midst of our girls’ sports activities, especially when we are traveling. Sometimes we work in a run session very early before their competitions or during their warm ups. Physically, I deal with exercise induced asthma which is especially bad with the extreme heat and humidity here. I also have a turf toe issue that can be so painful. My most difficult race was Ironman Arizona in 2012, when I got a stress fracture on my left foot 5 weeks before the race. I replaced run training with the elliptical machine and ran the race on the stress fracture, which began to hurt 7 miles into the marathon. I knew my girls were waiting for me at the finish line and I had trained so hard so even though it hurt, I did not stop until I crossed that line. POV

SOUTHERN EYE INSTITUTE At the Southern Eye Institute of Houma and Thibodaux, the dedicated doctors and staff members deliver clear sight to not only their patients but also those in need. Dr. Keith Kellum, a graduate of the University Of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and a magna cum laude graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, joined the practice in 2000 and bought it from Dr. Bryan Hemard the following year. “The practice is probably about four to five times bigger than it was when I took over in 2001,” Dr. Kellum says, “We had a very small office when I first joined him [Dr. Hemard] in the old Medical Arts building and now we have a six-thousand-square-foot office building with eight exam lanes and numerous room for diagnostic equipment. I’ve been very blessed with good success here.” Dr. Nano Zeringue, a graduate of Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, joined Southern Eye in 2004 and partnered with Dr. Kellum. She provides eye care for the people in and around her hometown of Thibodaux and Houma. Ole Miss graduate and optometrist, Dr. Heather Cohen joined the two doctors in 2014. All three experts in their fields work well together in what Dr. Kellum describes as a fun atmosphere. “We have a good working relationship. It’s a fun place,” Dr. Kellum says, “One of my patients earlier today was giving me a hard time, jokingly, about how much we were laughing in the hallway and having a good time. We also try to treat patients as if they are family members”

446 Corporate Drive | Houma, LA | 985.872.5577

Dr. Cohen echoes those sentiments made by Dr. Kellum. “It’s very much like a family environment. Everybody gets along well,” Dr. Cohen says. “We work hard, but we definitely understand that it’s balanced.” The doctors and staff of Southern Eye Institute certainly work hard with the significant amount of services they offer. They provide testing of the eye sight and make available lenses for people with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. They perform LASIK surgery, as well as PRK, which corrects refractive errors. These are laser-assisted vision correction procedures that reshape the cornea. They also treat diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, as well as all other general eye diseases and problems. The doctors and staff also make sure to spread that family mentality to the less fortunate as well. Dr. Kellum participates in programs such as Eye Care America and the Community Outreach Program, which provides eye care for patients without insurance. He does mission trips to Honduras, where he spends a week performing cataract surgery for the locals. Dr. Cohen partners with Southern Eye Bank and Chabert Ophthalmology to perform specialty contact lens fittings for corneal conditions. She also is a part of the Community Outreach Program. “We are a family here. We work hard to make sure that the patients feel cared for, are treated well, their problems are addressed, and that they leave with a good understanding of what’s going on and what to do,” Dr. Cohen says.

CRESCENT DENTAL A beautiful smile is a great start to an amazing first impression. Although having a great smile is important, an overall clean oral health is even more important. Fortunately, there is a practice led by Dr. Bobbie Morris, which has been providing exceptional dental and oral healthcare to the community of Lockport for over 33 years.

Because of the continued growth of her practice, she currently employs 12 people. Dr. Zachary Karam, a LSU Dental graduate, works alongside Dr. Morris in providing this quality dental care. Dr. Karam works well with patients of all ages and is a tremendous asset to the practice. DR. ALLEN BORNE For Dr. Allen Borne, the best part of becoming a doctor is coming home to share his knowledge. Born and raised in Houma, Dr. Borne is a 2003 graduate of Vandebilt Catholic High School. He attended Louisiana State University and earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his residency in Little Rock, Arkansas. Dr. Borne then travelled to Philadelphia to complete his fellowship before returning to practice with OrthoLA in their Houma and Thibodaux offices. “Once you leave, you realize you really miss Louisiana,” said Dr. Borne. “I’m a little bit old school in that I really like the idea of go out and do your thing, but then come back and bring something home. Make where you grew up, better. That was the dream in the back of my head at all times. There were many opportunities along the way, but I stayed true to the plan.” Before returning home, the fellowship Dr. Borne completed in Philadelphia helped him to develop the specialty skills needed to become an expert in his field. The fellowship was in hand and upper extremities or everything from the shoulder, down. “It’s one year where you really focus just on that,” explained Dr. Borne. “You work with the experts for that year and really don’t focus on anything else. With hands and arms, there’s so much anatomy and so much that goes in a tight space. There’s no way you can keep up with the latest and greatest hand and wrist and elbow things while you’re doing knee and hip replacements. You really focus on fine tuning things that make a difference.”

Choosing your specialty can often be difficult, but for Dr. Borne, orthopedics, specifically hand and arm, was always the way he was meant to go. The complexity of the hand’s nerves and tendons can be difficult, but his personality and desire to rise to the challenge were the perfect fit. Dr. Borne treats all injuries in the clinic but one of the more common things is the slight compression of the nerve in the wrist or carpal tunnel syndrome. The newer way of treating it is a small incision with no stitches. It allows the patient a shorter down time and a quicker return to work. He also sees a lot of wrist fractures in children, adults and the elderly. Kids are usually sports related, while the elderly are mostly osteoporotic fractures. One of the newer procedures Dr. Borne brings to our area is wrist arthroscopy. Similar to a knee scope, doctors are doing more and more scopes in the wrist. Often with wrist pain, people would either live with it, take some antiinflammatories, or see a doctor who would just inject it. For certain indications, Dr. Borne is able to put a scope inside the wrist and treat it in a minimally invasive manner without a big open surgery and is better able to diagnose it with just the camera. Dr. Borne specializes not just in surgery, but also in nonoperative care. He explains that part of his education through the fellowship is deciding when to operate and when to not. “We’re not just surgeons,” he explains. “We’re doctors first. We take care of everything and surgery is just one tool that we use.”

GRAFTON DERMATOLOGY

From its humble start in a small location on Menard Street in Thibodaux, Grafton Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery has grown over its 19 years to have four locations (Thibodaux, Houma, Morgan City, and Raceland) and be one of the leading practices of dermatology and cosmetic surgery in the area.

perform laser assisted Liposuction. They provide an assortment of cosmetic and aesthetic procedures. Dr. Grafton is certified in Mohs Surgery, a specialized skin cancer surgery.

“It feels great,” says Dr. Lee Grafton, who opened the practice on his birthday, “When we started out, we had two or three parking spaces and a little office that we rented. There were days where we only saw four or five people in a day. To go from that to four offices and busy all the time, feels good.” Dr. Grafton was joined by Dr. Tamela Charbonnet in 2001, followed by Dr. Kristal Guidroz, who started in 2011. The three doctors, who each are married with three children, are from Ruston, New Orleans, and Raceland respectively, but Dr. Grafton says they work well together. “We enjoy what we do and try to make it family oriented,” Dr. Grafton says. The practice also employees two Physician Assistants, Monique Blanchard and Luke Paige. Ann Bourgeois, the Office Manager, has been with the practice since its inception 19 years ago. The board certified doctors at this practice provide each of their patients with personalized care. The practice specializes in a variety of treatments. They assist in the healing of diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. They

“Basically what we do when we remove a skin cancer is check all the edges in the base to make sure we got it all, “It’s undoubtedly the best way to remove cancers, especially complicated ones that have recurred that somebody previously treated or have been treated unsuccessfully in the past. It’s the best way to get them out.” Grafton Dermatology also specializes is Botox, dermal fillers, laser services, IPL, and hair and tattoo removal. Over its nearly two-decade span, the practice has greatly impacted multiple communities. It has been able to successfully treat patients in the areas of Houma, Thibodaux, Morgan City, and Raceland, where there aren’t as many options for dermatology and cosmetic surgery as communities in bigger cities have. “I think that we provide good skin care. In the past, there weren’t that many dermatologists in the area. In those smaller communities like Raceland and Morgan City, those people have had to travel to other areas in the past to get dermatology care,” Dr. Grafton says, “We are able to screen people for skin cancer and see people that don’t have to drive 20 or 30 miles to go see somebody, and we really enjoy those clinics.”

HOUMA FAMILY PRACTICE Hailing from Bourg, Louisiana, Dr. Mark Walker’s family roots run deep in the bayou community. A graduate of South Terrebonne High School, Dr. Walker initially studied petroleum engineering at Nicholls State University before making a life-changing decision to continue a family tradition and study premedicine. After graduating from Nicholls, he was accepted into Tulane Medical School. While studying at Tulane, he worked with his uncle, Dr. Craig Walker, a cardiologist in Houma, with full intentions of pursuing a career in the field of cardiology. During his final year of medical school, he felt a strong calling to follow in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Leslie Walker, and become a family medicine physician.

you to take care of them and their families during their most vulnerable times, it is immensely humbling,” says Dr. Walker. Houma Family Practice Clinic is also an occupational medicine clinic. “When business owners feel confident in choosing your business to evaluate the wellbeing of their employees, it is extremely gratifying.”

“I chose to become a family physician because I wanted the ability to treat anyone of any age encompassing a broad spectrum of medical conditions,” explains Dr. Walker. “Growing up, I watched my dad treat countless patients with conditions ranging from a common cold to a terminal illness, while forming lifetime relationships along the way,” he conveys with a sense of pride. “I knew I also wanted to be able to do the same, so I followed my heart and have never regretted my choice.” After completing a residency program at Earl K. Long charity hospital, Dr. Walker returned to Houma in 1990, joining his father at Houma Family Practice Clinic. The elder doctor Walker had been in the practice of family medicine for over 25 years, taking care of generations of bayou families. The practice is located at 606 Liberty Street in downtown Houma and is also home to Dr. Kirk Dantin. “After practicing medicine for nearly thirty years, I still enjoy going to work everyday. Family medicine allows me to care for patients from birth until the end of life. When a patient trusts

Dr. Walker prides himself on his hands-on approach to running his practice. He remains steadfast in insuring the patient always comes first and the patient’s needs are always met in a timely manner, a work ethic instilled in him by his father. He feels patients can sense when a physician is genuinely concerned about them. He personally returns phone calls to his patients the same day results are received, and in turn patients make their gratitude known. The majority of his new patients are friends or family members referred by current patients who have expressed their satisfaction with the genuine compassion they received from Dr. Walker. In his personal life, Dr. Walker and his wife Margaret have two daughters, Jordan and Kristen. One is a dental hygienist and the other a registered nurse, both living in New Orleans. In his free time, Dr. Walker loves being outdoors, especially on the family land he grew up on, preferably behind the wheel of a tractor. He enjoys hunting and fishing and is a die-hard Saints fan. “If you asked me if I could go back and change it all or do anything differently, I would still do this,” smiles Dr. Walker. “I have a job that allows me to help others in times when they need help the most while also forming relationships and friendships that span generations. It’s been fulfilling, gratifying, and humbling, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

EAT. No stranger to the world of martial arts, local Tai Chi and Qigong instructor Michelle Beardslee has brought a type of exercise that seeks to improve one’s total-body health from ancient China to the heart of South Louisiana. Michelle said that, growing up, she always had a love for martial arts. She attributes that love to her father, who was a martial arts instructor himself.

DRINK. CONNECT.

“I was brought up in that lifestyle. He had weapons, swords and stuff all over the house, so that still is something that I love, but I think my father kind of instilled that discipline and the love for the art of martial arts and the swords and all that stuff,” Michelle said. As she got older, Michelle participated in both mixed martial arts and Krav Maga classes, while also serving as a fitness and dance instructor. When her own instructor suggested that she look into Tai Chi, she began training under a Tai Chi master and direct descendant of the Chen family, who developed the practice. “I started training with Jessie Tsao and got a teacher’s certification just to do beginners’ classes at first,” Michelle said. “Now, I’m teaching level one classes, level two classes and also aqua Tai Chi, and I also teach Qigong, which is another Chinese exercise.” Michelle takes her practice to various locations like martial arts studios and yoga studios, and she holds workshops. Currently, she teaches classes at the Fitness Center of Thibodaux Regional. She said that she prefers moving from location to location because she can reach bigger crowds of people that way. “I do prefer to go to a lot of different places because you run into people who, maybe they’re not willing to travel to the place that you’re at...so if you’re willing to go to different places to teach then you can reach a bigger crowd of people, more diverse crowd of people,” Michelle said. The exercises Michelle teaches combine Tai Chi with another practice known as Qigong, which she said is considered an ancient Chinese healing exercise. She begins each class with a head-to-toe warm up that involves rotations of every major joint in the body in order to prevent discomfort. She then moves onto the eight Brocades of Qigong, a famous exercise set that consists of outand-in total-body movements. Then, students begin the Tai Chi portion of the exercises, where flowing motions of the arms mimic martial arts movements. “[Tai Chi is] always described as ‘meditation in motion,’ so you’re breathing, you’re meditating in your mind, but you’re also moving at the same time,” Michelle said. By the end of each class, Michelle wants her students to have reached a level of peacefulness that they can carry with them through the rest of their day.

Through meditative exercises, she encourages her students to view themselves as “one big ball of peace” that no negativity can penetrate. Tai Chi was developed thousands of years ago by a Kung Fu master who wanted to create an exercise that incorporated healing and health benefits with martial arts purposes, Michelle said. It combines the simulation of martial arts movements with breathing techniques that serve to remove negativity from the body and intake positivity. “Once the student knows that this is the concept of Tai Chi...then they reach that level of pushing anything negative out of the body and regaining some kind of balance mentally and physically,” Michelle said. Michelle said that Tai Chi’s background as an ancient practice created thousands

Additionally, the practice causes no harm to joints in the body. “That’s something that attracted me to it,” Michelle said. “It’s not going to deteriorate the joints of your body like other exercises do where you would have more high impact.” Overall, Michelle believes that Tai Chi can bring health to every part of one’s body because it does not limit itself to targeting just one area; rather, it has total-body benefits. She said that the practice could help to improve one’s quality of life. “You have the benefit of the mental part of it where you’re relieving stress and you’re finding a peace. RECEIVE BY MARY DOWNER DITCH | PHOTOS SUBMITTED

Not many people can say that donating a perfectly good organ to a friend in need turned out to be the healthiest decision they ever made. But for Houma native Adam Doiron, this is just the case. Adam is an Ironman and an avid marathon runner– both of which are titles he earned after donating a kidney in 2015 to a coworker. Through a series of jobs and promotions, Adam found a home himself in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was through work there that he met Jenn Trunk. “It’s a funny story really,” Adam recalls. “Jenn actually got the job I had originally applied for at Rockwell Automation. I ended up getting a call back for a different position as a project manager. Jenn started one week after I did. We spent a lot of time together driving from customer to customer. I found out she had FSGS.”

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) causes serious scarring which leads to permanent kidney damage and failure. Jenn went into total kidney failure and had to go on dialysis in late 2014. At that point, she officially made the wait list to try and receive a donor kidney. She had family and friends that tried to donate, but all were denied for various reasons. On Easter weekend in 2015, Jenn shared on Facebook that yet another friend had been denied. Adam turned to Noel, his then girlfriend and now wife, and asked her if she would support his decision to donate a kidney. Without a moment’s hesitation, she gave her blessing. The next day Adam began the process to becoming a living donor.

“We often have friends or family that get some sort of disease such as cancer, where you can’t really do anything for them except be there for them personally–be an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on,” explains Adam. “This was an opportunity for me to say a friend needs something and I have the ability to make a difference by giving up something that I don’t need to live a normal life.” The tests run on potential living donors are very expansive. The Mayo Clinic sent Adam a kit to collect blood and urine to do an analysis to see if he was a potential match. Having O positive blood type, the same as Jenn, Adam knew they would quickly be past the first requirement. The Mayo Clinic then brought Adam in for two days of rigorous testing. The tricky test for Adam, however, was blood pressure. The Mayo Clinic requires a 24-hour blood pressure test where essentially every 15 minutes the cuff goes off and gives a reading. “During the day at the clinic, I basically ran from appointment to appointment, so every time it took my blood pressure I was jogging between buildings and I didn’t feel it was an accurate blood pressure reading,” shares Adam. “But even at night my blood pressure was higher than ideal. So they told me, ‘Everything else was ok; you have the perfect kidney to donate, but your blood pressure is borderline.’” Adam convinced the doctors to let him take the test at home again in a calm environment and they allowed it. This time, his results were fine. Adam got the news that he could be a donor while he was in a room at work with Jenn. His kidney was as good as hers. On November 3, 2015, Adam became a living donor. For Adam, the surgery was a success. He was back to work within a week and back to regular activities a few weeks later. But the original high blood pressure test was still on his mind. “I realized I lost an adrenal gland, which helps regulate blood pressure, so I should probably pay more attention to my diet and get on a regular regimen of exercise,” recalls Adam. “Before moving to Minneapolis, I didn’t live a super healthy lifestyle, relatively speaking. I had always been thin, always been what I considered healthy. But I didn’t pay attention to what I was eating. I didn’t necessarily workout, and I never really had a goal.” Noel was training to run a 50-mile race, so in an effort to be more active Adam decided to join her on her runs. He signed up for a half marathon and after that a full at

the Twin Cities Marathon in 2016. What started as a way to get a little bit healthier and spend more time with his wife developed quickly into a passion for Adam. He decided to give triathlons a try. In May 2017, he completed the St. George Half Ironman in Utah and a full Ironman a few months later in July 2017. He also ran the Chicago Marathon in October 2017. He is currently training for the 2018 Twin Cities Marathon with a goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon. “It all began because I realized I needed to do something that was going to keep me in better health because I was at more risk if would have kept living my life the way I was living it,” shares Adam. “I got healthy because I wanted to donate, and I picked running because of Noel. Now I like the fact I can race competitively. Every race seems like it’s a little bit of a win. It’s a way to stay healthy, but there’s always a challenge. There’s always a race to run. The small wins are a great way to stay motivated.” Along with his new healthy lifestyle, Adam has also become involved with the National Kidney Foundation. He is on the Board of Advisors in Minneapolis and has taken an active role in being a living donor advocate. He has traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with his local delegation about potential legislation to protect living donors from being discriminated against by life insurance policies or increases in health care premiums. “I’ve just become a better person,” smiles Adam. “Being able to be a positive influence for others is a big thing. For people to see what I’m doing and realize, "Hey that band nerd is actually a pretty decent athlete and runner;" you don’t have to be the jock or homecoming king to be healthy later in life. I’m 37 and I’ve never been healthier. You can do something now in your life to make a change.” POV

BY THIBODAUX REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

MEN’S HEALTH MONTH Men’s Health Month helps raise awareness of the importance for men and boys to become more actively involved in their health care, and seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. The life expectancy for men is five years less than women.

diovascular health, reduce severe headaches (like migraines), help you stay fit, and even boost your mood. Make getting a good night’s rest a priority.

Get Regular Physical Exams All men, regardless of age, should have a regular, annual physical exam. If you are in your 20s or 30s, you might think you are too young. Getting a “baseline” exam at a younger age will give your physician a general idea of your overall health – and can also be used later, when you reach your 40s and 50s.

Know Your Family Medical History

Specific Health Screenings: When Should You Have Them? Common health screenings for men approaching or at middle age include prostate cancer screening, colorectal cancer screening, and possibly lung cancer screening – if you are a smoker or have a history of smoking. Your doctor may also suggest a skin cancer screening. The idea behind all these screenings is to help find diseases early, so they can be treated with greater success.

Get Quality Sleep Sleep is arguably one of the most important things you can do for your body. When your sleep suffers, your body suffers as well. Getting adequate sleep can help improve your car-

It is important that you know your own family’s medical history, including any health problems your parents, grandparents, or siblings have (or had). Discuss this information with your doctor. In knowing your family history, you will also be able to pass along the information to your children. Based on your potential risks for certain familial ailments, your doctor might order key health screenings earlier than is usually recommended. Doing so could possibly head off future problems.

Get Healthy, and Stay Healthy Men, make time for your health. Make and keep those doctor and screening appointments. Make time for exercise, be vigilant about getting enough shuteye, and eat well.

RIPARIAN On one recent morning, I found myself sipping a much-needed cup of coffee while sitting at a table on the outside deck of a bayouside eating place. The chair I chose happened to face in such a direction that I had a long, linear view of Bayou Lafourche—the bayou on which I was born and raised and, as an adult, work. Maybe it was the way that the historic bayou front buildings with their new tenants and in their painted pastel colors contrasted against the brown and gray colors of the dirt of the prehistoric levee exposed by low tide. Or maybe it was the way noise-making cars on the bayouside highway sped and then abruptly squealed to stop at the red light and how that contrasted with the slow, languid, and continuous glide of resident ducks and ducklings enjoying the morning waters. Or maybe it was just the caffeine doing its intended job to block the phosphodiesterases and adenosine receptors that normally sedate my brain. Whatever it was, I began to envision a bayou without pastels and buildings and cars and noise—the way my ancestors would have known it. See, I wasn't simply born and raised here. Rather I am eighthgeneration bayou Doucet, both a genealogical as well as geographical descendant of exiled Acadians who were settled here in PoV country in 1785 by the Spanish territorial government of Louisiana. And, like the majority of others in PoV country, my ancestry and I are riparian— living nearby and subsisting upon the bounties of a body of water. The color of the bayou water made me envision an imaginary, faded, sepia-tone photograph of the first bayou Doucet, Jean-Baptiste, as he sat upon the batture of his bayou front land grant, pole-fishing for mullet to add some protein to the diet of his younger brother and their widowed mother. He hadn't finished clearing his new land for farming yet, so he was nestled in the brush between some lush hardwoods and cypress. There were no water hyacinths or nutria or lovebugs to pester him in those days, as those species would invade the bayou later. Nonetheless, I helplessly permitted multiple native alligators to crawl their way into and invade this photo.

Is that a cup of much-needed morning coffee he’s conveniently placed at arm’s reach atop a dry crawfish chimney? Maybe he’s gazing northerly where a noisy city called Thibodaux would emerge or westwardly where the boisterousness of Houma would grow, each with their bayou front buildings not-soon-to-be pastel in colors. Maybe he’s taking a long, linear view southward and envisioning a bayou where his children

and grandchildren would be born and raised. He knows his farmland won’t usefully divide for more than a generation, and so his family would need to settle farther and farther away down the bayou. And what’s down the bayou? Is there an end to the bayou? Where will his family live if there’s an end? And what would they farm?

ROLLER/SOLAR SHADES

I have him take a sip of coffee to break those cautious thoughts of unknowns and the far future. The warmth quiets his brain and its wonderings. This morning belongs to him, and his only concern is where the fish are. He leans over to the water, and sees only his reflection wrinkle like age with the light bayou current. It’s certainly difficult to imagine being settling in a wilderness thick with trees and tall grasses where the line of sight stops two feet in front of you at the next tree trunk. The only treeless area—the only place to forwardly see, think in space, and perhaps imagine the future—was the bayou. I imagine Jean-Baptiste, a young man in 1785, at the bayou thinking in space about future and family and work like many men over centuries have done. We call these men fathers. And each of them earns one day out of the year to figuratively or otherwise sit bayouside and fish for mullet with a much-needed cup of coffee, much like the morning coffees enjoyed by my dad, Herman— son of Etienne, son of Celestin, son of Octave Adam, son of Joseph Celestin, son of Francois Nicolas, son of JeanBaptiste. On Sunday, the seventeenth of this month, I hope you enjoy a nostalgic morning coffee and bayou reflection with yours. POV
