JONAH GIRIOR • EDITOR OF POV

WELCOME TO THE NEW

My column in last month’s PoV alluded to a few changes coming to the magazine. While my transition to editor was a big change to my life and the magazine, we would like to reveal an even bigger change with this issue. Welcome to the redesigned PoV, a new beginning for this publication. Our goal has been, and always will be, to deliver the stories of the great people that call our area home. However, we wanted to do it in a fresher and cleaner way. In the same fashion that we as a publication are celebrating a new beginning, the stories within this issue are also about celebrating new beginnings. Our first feature takes you into the home and life of Jessica Rebstock, a graduate student at Nicholls State University that recently started her blog, Hello Gorjess. Within the story, you’ll learn about the new beginning her parents experienced when they adopted her and how their support inspired Jessica to explore interior design and more in her lifestyle blog. The Rebstocks will be happy to welcome you into their lives on page 22. Matthieu Tillman will also be experiencing a new beginning as he transitions from high school to col-

lege this Fall. The Ellender Memorial High School graduate ended his high school career as his class’s valedictorian and will be making the trek to LSU as a member of the university’s cheerleading squad. Having never set foot into Tiger Stadium, it’s sure to be an amazing experience for the Houma native. Read about Matthieu on page 34. Finally, Elijah McGuire made sure opposing teams game planned for him as a standout player for the Vandebilt Catholic football team. After graduating, Elijah headed to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette where he continued to make a name for himself and rewrite the record books. Now, he is preparing for his first NFL season with the New York Jets. Learn more about Elijah’s journey on page 56. Change can be scary, but it is something we must embrace in order to grow. From personal experience, I know this to be true, and I am sure the people featured in this issue can agree with that statement as well, as they are embarking on some amazing journeys thanks to a little bit of change. And PoV is looking to embrace change too. So, without further ado…welcome to the new! POV

SAY WHAT?

HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN A TYPICAL DAY AT YOUR JOB TO A CHILD?

SIDNEY | PHOTOGRAPHER “I get to take photos of people on some of the most important days in their lives. My favorite part of my job is making new friends and giving them a way to remember those fun days that will make them smile over and over for many years.”

HAILEY | NURSE TECH “I am a nurse tech in the family birthing unit at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. In my job, I help the nurses take care of the babies after they’re born. I help clean them, feed them and make sure they are all healthy and happy babies.”

KAREY | REALTOR

“My job is to help my clients sell or buy their home and walk them through the stages to get from a purchase agreement to the closing table. On a daily basis, I study the latest data with real estate so I may stay on point and get the best deal for my clients. I also am an occupational therapist and help children and babies learn developmental skills mostly involving feeding, handwriting, and play skills.”

SHELBY | HAIR STYLIST “My friends and I get to cut and paint hair all day. Washing hair has to be my favorite thing to do at my job, becuase it makes them feel relaxed. I love that I get to meet a lot of different people everyday and make them all feel as beautiful as they look.”

ANGELLE | SALES & MARKETING

“I get to serve others in three different jobs: Beachbody coach, sales & marketing at Fakier Jeweler’s and realtor. I start my day by motivating people to work out and eat healthy. Then, I go to work at Fakier’s where I sell diamonds and jewelry. It’s kind of like walking into a treasure chest of jewels every day, a dream job for most girls I am sure. I also help people find the home of their dreams, but my favorite part of the day is spending time with my husband and kiddos.”

Renowned for its Greek Revival styling, the craftsmanship and distinctive characteristics of Orange Grove Plantation earned a designation on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1840, along the bank of Bayou Black, the estate currently encompasses a 4.5-acre tract of land surrounded by giant moss-draped oak trees, one of them dating over 400 years old. Enclosed by a white picket fence, a formal garden graces the front of the home and resembles an 18th-century Louisiana garden with pigeonnieres in both front corners. The opportunity to purchase the estate six years ago was the second time the home owner, Damon Baldone, tried to acquire the property. “Over 20

years ago, myself and a buddy, Glen Fakier, wanted to buy it and turn it into a bed and breakfast. We were young and just didn’t have the money, but we had the dream,” Damon recalls. “When I had the opportunity to purchase the property this time, it was a sign from my friend.” While Orange Grove is Damon’s private residence, he does rent the two cottages that flank the main house to tourists looking for a retreat upon visiting Bayou Country. Over the years, the once pristine property had become dilapidated and changed hands several times. During the 1980s, under the ownership of Christopher and Monique Cenac, Orange Grove Plantation underwent an extensive renovation.

Enlisting the assistance of a restoration consultant, the home and property were immaculately restored with historical accuracy. Original materials were saved when they could be and when they could not, salvaged materials were used that were fitting of nineteenth century craftsmanship. It’s briquette-entere-poteau (brick between posts) construction is still intact, and the floors and ceilings are original with a few exceptions. Another unique element that has been preserved in the historic home are the “faux bois” (false wood) treatments to doors, moldings and mantles. During the 1800s, this treatment was painted onto cypress to make it appear as if it were white oak.

The kitchen features open beam work with Norman truss construction and an authentic cooking fireplace with a bread oven. This fireplace, along with others throughout the home, were carefully repaired by hand with oyster-shell mortar that was hand mixed to resemble the original mud mortar. The addition of an outdoor kitchen and pavilion next to the pool are a favorite spot for Damon to relax with friends and family. A designed boiling area for seafood was a must for this Houma native. Also, an avid sports fan, the homeowner reclaimed one of the barns. Downstairs, large doors roll open so the spacious property can be enjoyed while playing pool or watching a big game and upstairs, a movie theatre complete with a candy bar is a delightful surprise. HELLO

GORJESS BY JONAH GIROIR | PHOTOS BY ERICA SEELY

A once golden oak colored glider in the living room of the Rebstock home tells the story of Jessica and her parents, James and Ramona. The glider, a simple purchase by James, was the start of a wonderful journey as he brought it home right before the couple adopted Jessica. While completing their home studies through Catholic Charities, the nun conducting the courses approached James and Ramona with a life-changing question. “The nun asked, ‘Are you ready to have a baby?’” Jessica explains. “My dad said ‘how soon?’ and the nun said ‘The baby needs to be adopted tomorrow.’ They were basically given a 24-hour notice that they were going to be parents.” And just like that, James and Ramona’s upcoming adoption became the talk of the bayou down in Golden Meadow. The next few years of Jessica’s life were spent being rocked in that golden oak colored glider, a staple in the family’s home. As she got older, Jessica found an interest in home décor and interior design that set her on a path towards her Hello Gorjess blog. “A year and a half ago I really started to research blogging. I love blogs and I read them all the time. I was looking for a hobby to have on the side while I’m getting my master’s degree,” the Nicholls graduate explains. The extra time while pursuing her master’s degree helped Jessica take that next step towards starting Hello Gorjess earlier this year. “I fell in love with writing in college. I never realized I loved creative writing as much as I did until then,” she recalls. “That started to snowball into the blog. I had the extra time and I was making it my year, so I would say just having the time gave me that extra push. I have such amazing friends that I made at Nicholls that have supported me and said I should start it also.”

Before starting the blog, Jessica needed to narrow down the topics she wanted to talk about. The first one was easy. “I love home décor. Before I even started the blog, I would post pictures of my apartment that I completely redid and people really jumped on that,” she says. “I’m so passionate about home décor and interior design that I knew that was an absolute must.” Through her research, Jessica was able to round out her topics. “Lifestyle came into play because all the topics that I wanted fell into lifestyle. I post healthier alternative recipes, drink recipes, and I’m religious so I’m also posting things about God and inspirational Scriptures that I read,” she explains. “That’s how I narrowed down the three topics. Home, lifestyle and inspiration is what Hello Gorjess is all about.” Since starting the blog on February 23, Hello Gorjess has taken off and provided Jessica with another journey to experience with her supportive parents. The first big project came in March when she received a phone call from

someone wanting to redo their entire house. While standing in line at the movie theater, Jessica answered the call and her mom encouraged her to take the next step. “I took a leap, and I told her yes,” Jessica recalls. “We’re still working on the home, and it has been a dream. I just wanted to start a blog, and this interior design business came on the side, and I’ve always been passionate about it.” The free time might be there now as Jessica is completing her master’s degree, but she is preparing herself for the day when she’ll be in the classroom. However, she still believes that Hello Gorjess will carry on. “I think if I manage my time well and stay organized, I can do both,” she says. “I love teaching, but this is such a fun hobby.” Jessica’s love for home décor and interior design is not limited to redoing other’s houses and offices, as she recently began working on her parents’ home as well. subtle to dramatic have added an extra touch of beauty to the home that she has known her entire life, a grateful gesture to the people that have supported her all along. “We’re obviously very close. They have always supported me and given me the drive that I need to do what I want in life,” Jessica says of her parents. “They’re my backbone.” And as for the glider? The chair has a seen a little bit of work too as Jessica distressed and painted it recently. “It was nice to keep that sentimental piece that my mom rocked me in. It was a lot of hard work, but it was nice to keep it,” she says. “I hope one day I can take that rocker into my home and rock my kids in that as well and keep that tradition going. I’m huge on sentimental pieces because that’s what makes a house a home.” POV

YOURSELF Her eyes spoke volumes before her lips moved. High cheekbones and hollowedout features told her story better than her words. “We have known hunger,” she stated simply.

THE BROADWAY IS LOOKING TO RELIEVE THE BURDEN OF ALZHEIMER'S & HELP END THIS EPIDEMIC

She and her three children were without food for four days the week before I met her. To look into her eyes allowed me a brief glimpse into a world I’ve never known. Our economy struggles, and we eat at restaurants less. Her economy struggles, and her family starves. During my trip to Africa, our worlds intersected for brief moments. We connected as mothers do. Her day is our night, but the bond of motherhood overcame ethnic lines and geographical divide. “I’m so tired,” she confessed.

Her job was suddenly ended by a political system that gives little voice to the people it dominates. Her place of work was cut off suddenly because the government decided her work building would be better used as a roadway instead. She didn’t ask me for help with finances, though. Her first question to me was about motherhood. “How do you make sure you’re doing your best?” Her question hit me. She had stayed behind to ask me how I do my best, as though I would have an answer for that. I couldn’t speak for several seconds. Her shoulders still held a hint of the woman she once was, in their refusal to slump because of life’s hardships. Her best is all she has to give. She can’t give money or things, but she can give what every mother longs to give – her best. I held her hand as I spoke to her in hushed tones. Perhaps our ages were about the same, but she seemed years older, her eyes burdened by years of backbreaking work with nothing to show. “You are giving your best simply being their mom,” I told her. “All we have to give is ourselves.”

ADVANCED EYE INSTITUTE

In the absence of food, she is the loving arms wrapping around children whose bellies scream from days of emptiness. “I have no advice other than to give yourself,” I repeated. Our hearts intertwined, as we both longed for our own answer to the question. “How do I know I’m giving my best?” We spoke for several more minutes. Talked about discipline. Talked about love. As we both stood to leave the room, our eyes locked and our arms wrapped around each other, both knowing that when I left her country in a few days, we would likely never meet again. So, we encouraged one another to each go home to our babies, vowing to give our best, by giving ourselves. It’s been over a month since we spoke, and I think of her often. Do they have enough to eat? If she’s not eating well, how is the baby in her womb faring? It’s so hard to give yourself when you feel so worn by this world that there’s little left over to give. I’ve repeated my own advice to myself. I whispered it to myself, as a long day turned into a difficult night, with more problems with children than I care to admit. “Just give yourself,” I whispered. So, I did. And somewhere, an ocean away, I prayed she was doing the same. My day ending, hers probably just beginning. May we forever be known as people who give ourselves, even on days when we feel that we have nothing good to give. POV

Growing up in South Louisiana I posed for more than my share of photos sitting on giant gators. My dad and uncles would return from gator hunting expeditions, and the family would gather for the men to regale us with tales of the hunt. I recall those days as being mixed with excitement and some trepidation. Sure, the alligator was no longer a threat, but as a young child straddling a ten-foot beast for a photo op brought about some anxiety. No matter how many times you sat on one of those toothy creatures, your young imagination could dream up scenarios where that gator would awaken and scare the bejeezus out of you. As my cousins and I would line up for our turn to sit on the fearsome brute, we did so with respect for what that animal was capable of. Cocodrie is Cajun French for alligator, and this Belgian style ale is stuffed with enough hops to stand up to a sauce-piquant prepared with one. Just like those gators of days gone by, this brew is one to be approached with great respect‌or

This dance brings a hoppy IPA character to the complex, fruity, spicy character of a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. In contrast to American styles, I find the Belgian yeast imparts a cleaner bitterness and a dry edge.

CALL I N G

BATON ROUGE BY FRANCESCA D’AGOSTINO | PHOTOS BY CHANNING CANDIES

What was only a dream a few months ago has become reality for LSU’s new cheerleader, Matthieu Tillman. Through hard work and dedication over the past years, the Ellender Memorial graduate will be making his way to Tiger Stadium and joining the squad this Fall. Matthieu has always been a leader and strived to be the best at everything he did. At Ellender he set two goals for himself: to be valedictorian and to be class president. He accomplished both and more.

“Earning my title as valedictorian was a rough goal to accomplish,” Matthieu recalls. “It required a lot of sleepless nights and countless hours.” In route to being valedictorian, Matthieu took on every advanced placement class that Ellender offered, while being dual-enrolled at Fletcher. He accomplished his class president goal multiple times as he was voted class president every year of his high school career, crediting his social skills and exhibition of the right characteristics outside of the classroom.

Matthieu’s interest in cheerleading sparked when he first stepped on Ellender’s campus. He wanted to be involved as much as he could and considered pursuing something in athletics. After a friend suggested cheerleading, Matthieu knew that would be a perfect fit as he was full of school spirit and always had an interest in tumbling and stunting. As a cheerleader, he set high goals as well. “Once I became a cheerleader, it was no doubt in my mind that I was going to be captain,” Matthieu says. “Along the way, people told me I couldn’t, as with everything else I’ve done, but that motivated me even more to go after it.” However, none of these accomplishments came easily. Matthieu cites time management as being the key factor to all his success. “I just kept track of everything that I needed to do and prioritized my tasks. I didn’t make any excuses, and I did everything to the best of my abilities. I also had a very strong support system,” he explains. When it came time to choose a college, Matthieu felt that LSU offered him the best opportunity to be successful through academics and cheerleading. He knew he would be taking a risk, considering LSU’s rigorous cheer tryout process, but decided to give it a try. “LSU is the best of the best nationwide, and I knew that becoming an LSU Cheerleader would push my limits as well as enhance my college experience,” Matthieu says. Starting in mid-July, the cheerleading year at LSU can be quite the grind. The squad kicks off with pre-camp, followed by a week at a UCA College Spirit Camp, and the year does not end until the following year’s tryouts. No one is guaranteed a spot on the squad, and every member must try out again each year making the competition fierce and the requirements very demanding. To be eligible, students must be outgoing, well-rounded, and keep up their grades, all which Matthieu proved during his high school career. Meanwhile, they must also maintain a

certain level of fitness to perform stunts and keep the energy level of the crowd high at football, basketball, volleyball and gymnastic events. ”For me, being a part of LSU’s cheer team means that there’s no limit to what I can do and that what other people say and think doesn’t matter,” Matthieu says of his new role. Matthieu made his trek from Houma to Baton Rouge on August 16, and is ready to start classes for his pre-med kinesiology curriculum. Coincidentally, the cheerleader has never been to an LSU football game, but is very excited to see what Tiger Stadium is all about. He is about to witness one of the most exciting environments a college campus has to offer as over 100,000 prideful LSU fans are sure to be rockin’ when “Callin’ Baton Rouge” blares on the stadium’s speakers and the team takes the field for their first game of the season. “A few months ago, this was only a dream, and it’s still surreal,” Matthieu explains. “I always believed that I could make it, but to actually be here is an indescribable feeling.” POV

Tailgating in Louisiana isn’t just a gathering before a football game- it’s a tradition. On game day, fans descend upon school grounds and turn a three-hour game into an all-day event. No matter how you get there - car, truck or SUV - just get there and be there early to set up your spread. Showing pride for your team by firing up the grill and serving a feast is a must. Don’t forget the lawn chairs and blankets, because let’s face it, you’re going to be there a while. Adding touches of school spirit with flags, table coverings and even a custom sign complete the scene.

Friends, family and even complete strangers unite on game day to celebrate a way of life, win or lose. The aromas of game day grub, juicy burgers hitting the grill and sounds of pre-game music fill the air. Open up the back of your truck for an easy tabletop or use it as a gathering place for guests to sit and get to know each other. Even spread out a blanket to make everyone feel welcome and to provide an additional place for friends to feast. A good old-fashioned tailgate stands the test of time as the prefect way to party before game time. Season after season, pre-game festivities reign in the South. Whether you’re a Colonel, a Tiger, a Gator or a Rebel, there’s a little bit of something for everyone, and it’s sure to get you ready for kickoff. POV September 2017 44 povhouma.com

BACK TO SCHOOL FITNESS TIPS

S

ummer break has ended! As you get your kids back to their school routines don’t forget to get back to your regular fitness routine. Here are a few tips for getting back in shape during back to school season:

Consider short workout routines

Set a new schedule to workout Reset your workout schedule to fit your kids’ school schedule. Whether you workout early in the morning, during your lunch break or right before picking up the kids, choose the best time that works for you. Setting a weekly schedule will help you develop the habit of getting back to your workout routine.

Getting the kids prepped for school along with work prep can cut into your workout minutes if you don’t plan carefully. An effective workout doesn’t require a lot of time. Set a timer for your workout to stay on schedule. Join a group exercise class or work with a personal trainer to maximize your time at the gym.

Include your family in your workout It’s tempting after school and work to spend family time in front of the TV. Encourage your family to live an active lifestyle by taking a walk, riding bikes, participating in sports and more. Make fitness fun and a part of your family’s weekly routine.

“Go!” shouted a quarterback in a sparsely populated indoor practice field – his voice so loud that it left an echo. That quarterback was New York Jets signal caller Bryce Petty. On his command, Bryce took a snap, then started running backward. A quarter-second later, Bryce was where he needed to be – about a yard and a half away from his center where Houma native Elijah McGuire was waiting. Bryce handed Elijah the football and suddenly, the Vandebilt Catholic High School graduate was in his element – doing what he’s done his whole life. Elijah stuttered to the left, then pondered whether to bounce the run outside or hit a small hole in the middle. He chose to bounce outside, but he made his decision a little too late. Instead of gaining 10-15 yards like he might have done in college, Elijah was bottled up almost immediately and gained only 2 yards. “Eli!” shouted a man from the coach’s huddle as the young back picked himself off the turf. “Over here.” The voice summoning Elijah was Lake Charles native and legendary NFL running back Matt Forte – the man who Elijah is leaning on heavily these days because of his vast knowledge and the two’s common background as Louisiana natives. Matt calmly gave Elijah a few pointers and the next time the team ran the play, he nailed it, getting a first down. Elijah is preparing for his first NFL season with the Jets – an honor he earned after a legendary collegiate career with the UL-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns, which resulted in him being selected in the 2017 NFL Draft. Elijah concedes that NFL life is tough, but added that he’s having a blast, learning from Forte and veteran

Bilal Powell. “They’re taking me under their wings and telling me the do’s and the don’ts and the rights and the wrongs,” he says of his new mentors. “The things I don’t know, I ask questions about and they get me in the right direction.” Elijah is an unbelievable talent – one of the greatest to play the game in the history of Terrebonne Parish. At Vandebilt, he was an unstoppable force at quarterback, helping lead the Terriers to the Class 4A State Quarterfinals. Out of high school, Elijah signed with UL-Lafayette. He hoped for bigger scholarship offers, but was relatively unknown on recruiting boards because he reclassified in his prep career. Because of that, a lot of colleges thought McGuire was a junior when he was actually a senior. It was everyone else’s loss and the Cajuns’ gain. Elijah did everything there is to do at the college level, re-writing the record books for the Ragin’ Cajuns, while also helping get the program to a new level of prominence. With UL-Lafayette, McGuire won Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, Sun Belt Player of the Year and was a multi-time All-Conference player. Statistically, he was as good as anyone the school has ever seen, setting the university record for all-purpose yards.

“He’s an unbelievable talent,” UL-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth said last season. “He affects the games so many ways. But for all the impact he has on the field, Elijah is an even better person off it. He’s a truly great Ragin’ Cajun.” Elijah has been on the NFL radar long before being drafted. He thought about entering the NFL draft after his junior season, but opted to return to school to improve his draft stock. As a senior, he battled injuries, but still made an impact, helping lead the Ragin’ Cajuns to the New Orleans Bowl. In a recorded phone conversation posted on the Jets website, McGuire was calm and poised as he spoke to Jets owner Woody Johnson.

With the Jets, Elijah is in a role he’s not used to as he sits behind his mentors Matt Forte and Bilal Powell on the depth chart.

However, the veterans have been slowed by injury in training camp, giving Elijah the chance to work with the first team in camp. Elijah wishes he had time to savor the moment– how this is something he’s dreamed of since he was a kid, but adds that he just doesn’t have the time. The NFL is a grind “He affects the games so many and any step that’s not forward is a step ways. But for all the impact he backward. Enough backward steps and has on the field, Elijah is an even the ride is over – as fast as it ever started. better person off it. He’s a truly

SMALL BOATS & THE

BIG CALL Of all the stories my grandpa told me, there’s one story that I remember every year at this particular time. It’s the story of him and his family and their evacuation from Leeville during the great hurricane of 1915.

The 1915 hurricane struck the Louisiana coast near Grand Isle at the end of September. It blew winds of 145 miles per hour and pushed a floodtide of 14 feet over Leeville, where a 10-year-old Papère lived with his parents and siblings. Newspapers tell that all but one of the 100 homes in Leeville were demolished in the storm’s wake. Papère’s was not the one. As the tide was rising and the village flooding, Papère’s family loaded onto a boat and headed up-the-bayou to Golden Meadow, as did most village families. During the evacuation, some gust of wind or some rising wave jostled Papère’s infant brother from their mother’s arms into the floodwaters. Papère promptly jumped into the water to rescue the baby, loading him back into the boat before struggling to climb back aboard himself. As fate would have it, all were finally transported north to safety. I am remembering this story in September 2017 as theaters around the world show, “Dunkirk.” The movie tells the true story of the evacuation of British and French soldiers as they evaded the Nazi German advance by retreating to the beaches of Dunkirk, France. Winston Churchill ordered all ships and boats to rescue these men from the beaches and waters of the English Channel and take them to safety. And they did, saving nearly 350,000 men. There are lots of historical similarities between here and there in Dunkirk. Early Dunkirk was a coastal fishing village, just as the early villages in coastal Louisiana where many of our ancestors lived. People spoke French in early Dunkirk, and, though certainly a different dialect, so did most people in early coastal Louisiana. The name “Dunkirk” is Flemish for “dune-church” or “church upon the dunes,” and it would not be unreasonable to build churches in coastal villages on such high ground, just as Notre Dame de Lourdes in nineteenth century Cheniere Caminada, or Our Lady of Prompt Succor. And of course, the people for whom these churches were built owned boats—boats to travel, boats to live on, boats to ply the fishing trade and, as it turned out, boats to rescue people in need and save lives. A similar call to save lives is answered by the modern-day Cajun Navy. A flotilla of hundreds of volunteer boats reached New Orleans

in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. And, during the torrential rainstorm of August 2016, it’s estimated that volunteer Cajun boatsmen rescued 20,000 people. With the wide availability of small cameras following World War II, my parents began taking pictures of the aftermath of hurricanes and other storms. My favorite family photo of this kind shows pirogues and skiffs in the flooding south of Golden Meadow that followed Hurricane Betsy in September 1965. In the background, there are downed creosote posts and tangled power lines that outline where Highway One lay beneath. Packed onto one skiff are two men, two women, and a bunch of small children, together with two dogs, a yard goat, and what looks like a bushel of crabs. Certainly, the historic origins of today’s Cajun Navy can be found in such photos, as well as Papère’s 1915 story.

The vision of families of 1915 and 1965 evacuating in their small boats, together with similar memories of hurricanes and other high tides from my own childhood in Golden Meadow, are profound memories. As I watched “Dunkirk” last month and saw the dramatization of thousands of boats emerging from both sides of the English Channel in the service of saving human lives, I couldn’t help feeling an ancestral kinship with those rescued men. As many readers born and raised in PoV country, I am alive today because my ancestors were fishermen—boatsmen—who long ago answered the call to rescue people in early coastal Louisiana. And that’s a movie that deserves to be made. POV

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL BASIC FINANCIAL EDUCATION

Before they can count, children already know something about money. As soon as your children begin to handle money, start teaching them how to handle it wisely. are a good way to teach children how to save money and budget for the things they want. How much you give depends on what you expect them to buy and how much you want them to save. When it comes to giving children allowances: set parameters, make allowance day a routine, like payday, and consider “raises” for children who manage money well. ALLOWANCES

TAKE IT TO THE BANK. Opening a savings account in a “real” bank introduces children to the concepts of earning interest and compounding. Encourage them to divide their money, allowing them to spend, while also insisting they save some. Writing down each goal and the amount that must be saved will help children learn the difference between short-term and long-term goals. SHOPPING SENSE. Teach children how to compare items by price and quality. By explaining that you won’t buy them something every time, you can lead children into thinking carefully about the purchases they want to make. Consider setting aside a day when you will take children shopping for themselves. This encourages them to save for something they want rather than buying on impulse. For “big-ticket” items, suggest that they might put the items on a birthday list.

EARNING AND HANDLING INCOME. Earned income from part-time jobs might be subject to withholdings for FICA and federal and/or state income taxes. Show your children how this takes a bite out their paychecks. CREATING A BALANCED BUDGET. As children get older, help them prepare a budget to make ends meet. Children should first list all their income. Next, they should list routine expenses. Finally, subtract the expenses from the income. To help children learn about budgeting: devise a system for keeping track of what’s spent, categorize expenses as needs and wants, and suggest ways to increase income and/or reduce expenses. THE FUTURE IS NOW. Teenagers should be ready to focus on saving for larger goals. While bank accounts may still be the primary savings vehicles for them, you might also consider introducing your teenagers to the principles of investing. Helping older children learn about topics such as risk tolerance, time horizons, market volatility, and asset diversification may predispose them to take charge of their financial future.

FUN FACTS

The 2017 NFL season for New Orleans Saints Quarterback Drew Brees has the potential to be a rather historic one. The future Hall of Famer is closing in on some pretty significant milestones. Let’s take a look at the three major milestones Brees can eclipse in the upcoming season.

70,000 yards passing • Only two other QBs have surpassed the 70,000 yard mark in their careers (Peyton Manning and Brett Favre). Entering the 2017 season, Drew needs to pass for 3,889 yards to become the third member of this club.

500 passing touchdowns • 500 passing touchdowns is yet another club consisting of only Peyton Manning and Brett Favre. Drew can join that group with 35 touchdowns this year.

6,000 passing completions • Drew can also join Peyton Manning and Brett Favre as the only quarterbacks to complete 6,000 passes in their careers. He will need to complete 164 passes to his group of talented skill position players to reach this mark.
