THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS In 1897, a wise newspaper answered a young girl’s question in a manner that still holds a spot in my heart today. “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.” (Francis Pharcellus Church, “The Sun”)

overcoming social anxiety with the help of her family and her art to be able to share her talent with our community. Share in her passion on page 24.

For my family, giving back to our community through service has always been at the top of our Christmas list. We volunteered each year at the James Aitkens Christmas Giveaway. Everyone had an area where they helped out. As young children, my brother and I would assist with simple tasks like restocking the tables with toys. As we grew older, I was given the responsibility of helping the families walk through the giveaway, selecting toys and clothes to appear under their tree that year. It was a serious job, as there was a limit to what they could select and each person wanted to choose the best gift for their child or grandchild. For me, Mr. James was the embodiment of the spirit of Christmas. He loved people and loved being able to help those in our community who need the extra boost, especially around Christmas. No child went without a present under the tree if Santa Aitkens had anything to do with it. He was an inspiration to me to love everyone and give of yourself all the blessings to others you can.

A festive family gathering is never complete without a delectable feast! What’s even better are a few dishes that can be made before your party, so you can spend a few moments more with your loved ones. Enjoy a taste of the holidays with recipes from a few of our friends and yours on page 34. In the spirit of giving, Annabelle Thomas shows us that no matter your age, you can help others in need. SAY WHAT?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITION?

JAIME | NURSE PRACTITIONER “I let my babies arrange our nativity scene in the living room. It is their “job” and the arrangements are PERFECT!!! Baby Jesus on top of the crèche so he could be closer to God was one of my favorites.”

CALEB | TEACHER/COACH “My favorite family tradition is going to my parents house on Christmas Eve. We fry oysters and exchange gifts.”

DEBBIE | EXECUTIVE SECRETARY

“My favorite holiday tradition is gathering with loved ones to sing Christmas and worship songs! In my youth years we’d pile onto the bed of a truck-pulled flatbed trailer filled with bales of hay and drove slowly, and reverently, throughout neighborhoods, singing Christmas carols. The memory of happy faces as folks opened their doors to listen, while we stopped and sang in their driveway is a wonderful feeling. As an adult now, with towering duties and unending to-do lists it’s so easy to get caught-up in the hustle & bustle of life’s chaos, but (Oh) that we would all pause (the other 11 months of the year) to remember that the “Message of Christmas” is with us 24/7/365!”

LAURA | STUDENT “My favorite holiday tradition is baking christmas cookies with my family. I love getting together and having fun and getting to spend time with everyone.”

EMMA | STUDENT

“My favorite holiday tradition is to put on my new Christmas pajamas, fix a cup of hot chocolate and cozy up by the Yule Log on TV.”

Connie Harris customized several spaces using mirrors, including a custom powder and a focal wall in the den. The powder room is clad entirely with mirrors where a glass top sink and glass shower door seem to oat in the space. In the den Connie installed an antiqued mirrored wall behind the custom bar giving the space an aged appearance.

The addition of a courtyard accessible from the den increases the entertaining space and provides outdoor seating and dining areas. Covered by a custom copper roof by Supreme Ornamental, the space is intimate and inviting, making the space one of the homeowners’ favorites. POV

THE SOUND OF

CHRISTMAS “Silent night, holy night.... all is calm, all is bright.” Those words make me stand still, reminding me of Christmas Eve candlelight services of my youth, with an entire church holding candles, singing carols and preparing for the biggest day of the year. I long for the still, the calm, the holy, so I sing the words, though the candle of my youth feels a bit dimmer, a little drenched in days that leave me praying for the holiness we all stop once a year to sing about. “Joy to the World” This song begins with four words that we long for all year long, if we’re honest. It’s been a brutal fall, with news stories that leave me longing for joy to permeate the world in the midst of what feels like our darkest hour. When a man walks into a church so similar to the churches people all across America attend and methodically kills even the youngest of its members, I have to keep singing for joy, because without the song of joy ringing through our hearts, the silence sings of sorrow. “Mary, Did You Know?” It’s the question I would ask her if I could. Did you know the heartache you would feel as you watched the life of your son? When the angel told you of glad tidings and good news, did you ever know your greatest joy would bring your greatest sorrow? Would you say that every gladdest moment has the potential to bring our greatest grief? That all joy brings sorrow, even the birth of a heavenly king? “O, Holy Night” The holiest of nights changed all the world. Believers and unbelievers all count time by the birth of the baby boy who had angels and shepherds heralding his entrance. His entrance proclaimed in the heavens and celebrated by the shepherds keeping their sheep. It sounds so normal to us thousands of years later, but to have been the shepherd, on the frailest fringes of society and be asked to celebrate the birth of the newborn king. Lonely years of sheep herding turned into a night all of history would remember.

Serving Louisiana Communities for Over 30 Years.

“O, Come Let Us Adore Him” The invitation to come in adoration of something bigger than ourselves, bigger than the world we can see around us. It’s an invitation into the holiest of nights that brought joy to the world, where a mother births in the darkest of nights a newborn king, worshipped by all creation. It’s my favorite of all the songs. It’s the invitation to all the uninvited. Come inside the innermost circle of all circles. Everything you’ve fought for your entire life isn’t worth as much as this invitation. You don’t have to wonder if you’ve been welcomed in when the king of the world says he has your name inscribed on the palm of his hand. “Little Drummer Boy” I’ve felt my beating heart pound before the baby boy born to be king. Though no drummer, I’ve brought my gifts before Him, saying I’ll give what I have, and I’ll bring to Him every good thing He’s given me. He’s the initiator of recycled gifts. Every gift I’ve ever given Him is one He gave me first. I’m only returning to Him the things freely given. This open-handed gift giving to the king who gave me my world. So like the little boy who plays his drum before the king, I give my gifts to the one who gave it all. May your Christmas be merry and bright. May every sorrow bring great joy. May your face this year turn toward the king of all heaven and earth. POV

A lone piece of driftwood hangs from the wall, draped and covered in white cord. Each of the strands of cord is methodically knotted, tied and pulled. As the knots are tied, the piece takes on a life of its own, embracing the artist’s skill and passion for what she does. About a year ago, Briana Sullivan created a small business called Southern Knots. Southern Knots is a handmade online and pop-up shop business featuring macramé pieces. Macramé is a tactile art form that is created from cord tied into a series of knots to from a pattern. Wildly popular in the 1970s, the fiber art pieces are once again finding their way onto the pages of interior books and magazines. Briana’s pieces can range from plant hangers, wall decorations, table runners, or even pacifier clips. The start of macramé for Briana rooted from her desire for a plant hanger. Typically, plant hangers are pretty pricey. Briana’s mother told her she could make a hanger just as good as the ones big businesses had to sell. Thus, with a little encouragement from her mother, she began this journey by creating a piece for herself first. After finishing her first piece, the plant hanger, Briana realized it was something she was interested in pursuing. “Sometimes I’ll get a design idea from the way a plant is shaped. Whether it’s the v-shape that a leaf makes or even the stem of a plant.”

985-219-1111 www.gerilynnnissan.com

Photos Submitted Whether gathered from nature or independent thoughts, her creations vary in pattern, scale and complexity. Large-scale pieces can take several days to complete, while some of her plant hangers and smaller projects can be completed in a day. The ability to make each piece unique and one of a kind is intriguing Briana admits. “It’s not like crochet,” Briana explains. “You don’t have to follow a pattern. It’s just a bunch of knots that you make and can maneuver by yourself to shape it into whatever you want.” She has drawn out sketches, but ultimately lets her creativity take over when making a piece. The macramé provides a creative avenue for Briana to escape her thoughts and concentrate on being creative. For Briana, her business, as well as the macramé, became and outlet for her, rather than just a job. As an adult, she recognized that she suffered from social anxiety as early as age six. Briana says, “When I moved back home after college at University

of Lafayette, that’s when I realized I suffered from social anxiety.” She explains that she would go to school, then straight back home, because she was nervous to do things on her own. She realized this was an issue and began looking for ways to overcome the anxiety. Luckily, she found not only a passion, but an outlet too. Establishing Southern Knots encouraged Briana to push the limits of her social comfort zone and improved her anxiety tremendously. She explains, “Starting this business has helped me step out of my comfort zone and get into social situations more. Doing this makes me interactive and present with people every day.” Supported and inspired by a husband a child who enjoy consistent social interaction, Briana has woven macramé and her family together for the perfect combination. BY MARY DOWNER DITCH | PHOTOS SUBMITTED

While to some children, Christmas is all about what gifts Santa is bringing them, to Annabelle Thomas, it’s about what she can give to others. With the help of her parents, Annabelle is hosting a toy drive to bring toys and other necessities to the patients of Ochsner Hospital for Children. Annabelle is no stranger to the halls of the hospital. She was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2015 at the age of four.

“She was having ear infection after ear infection,” recalls Victoria Ordoyne Thomas, Annabelle’e mother. “She was running these really high fevers too, which was uncommon for her.” One Friday morning, Annabelle came running to Victoria to show her mom her new “polka dots” that had popped up on her little body. Victoria knew it wasn’t normal and brought her in to see the pediatrician. The dots were petechia, or capillaries that

A great gift for any season! had burst under the skin. After some quick blood work revealed Annabelle’s red blood cell count was abnormally low and her white blood cell count was very high, the pediatrician sent them straight to New Orleans to meet with a hematologist. Once at the children’s hospital, the hematologist and oncologist pulled vial after vial of Annabelle’s blood. After a short period of time, they brought the family in the room to explain they were 95% sure what the diagnosis was going to be: leukemia. Leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children and very treatable and curable. The doctors began treating Annabelle that very night, admitting her for red blood cell and platelet transfusions. She got her port placed and they began chemotherapy. She was an inpatient for 11 days.

Annabelle received her official diagnosis of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She went into remission on day 29. She is considered high risk since she didn’t go into remission on day eight. On day eight, Annabelle still had 5% leukemia blasts in her blood. After day 29, Victoria and her husband Doug went over the two and a half year treatment plan with the doctors. For Annabelle’s parents, this was the hardest day of her diagnosis.

done over 25 spinal taps. Doctors have put chemo and steroids directly into her spinal fluid. She does oral chemo daily, steroids monthly, and port chemo. Through it all, Annabelle has remained very positive and upbeat. “It’s just become normal for her,” explains Victoria. “I don’t think she understands fully that it’s not something that every child has to do. It’s her normal.” Victoria usually tells Annabelle of the next day’s plans the night before they go in for treatments. About a month ago, before one of their monthly appointments, Victoria found Annabelle cleaning up and placing toys into a bag. When she questioned her young daughter’s actions, the reply came, “Mom, I just want to bring some of the toys I don’t play with to the children at the hospital.”

“Mom, I just want to bring some of the toys I don’t play with to the children at the hospital.”

“We though the initial diagnosis day was hard,” recalls Victoria, “but sitting down and signing the papers for treatment for the next two and a half years was devastating. It was just overwhelming. We just took one day at a time. We still do it like this. We wake up and do that day and repeat.”

Two years later and there is an end in sight. March 2018 will mark the end of Annabelle’s treatment. It does take a long time to treat because the risk of relapse is always very high due to leukemia being in the blood. Altogether, Annabelle has

patients practically live at the hospital during their illnesses and treatments. Annabelle has spent nearly 100 days in the hospital as an inpatient during the course of her illness. The children are most in need of comfortable clothes, like shortsleeved pajama sets. Teens and infants are often overlooked during toy drives. These age groups will benefit from donations of rattles, teethers and onsies, spa items and gift cards to places like PJ’s Coffee Shop. New movies are always welcome. As patients have to go to another floor for surgery or testing, they can bring a portable DVD player with them to watch a movie to help take their mind off of the medical tasks at hand. Annabelle will collect gifts until December 20. She has an appointment on December 22 and will proudly deliver the gifts from the idea that was founded in her caring heart. “There is a true need for these types of items at the hospital,” says Victoria. “Annabelle is thrilled to be placing boxes at area business for donations. We are happy to help her make others so happy.” POV

WHY TO GO

NUTS FOR NUTS Nuts are proof that good things come in small packages and these bite-size powerhouses are packed with heart healthy fats, protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. They also provide antiinflammatory and antioxidant benefits that have been shown to protect our bodies from damage. Just keep in mind that nuts are high in fat and calories, so a handful is a great way to hold you over until your next meal, a few more handfuls can quickly ruin your appetite. Also, avoid nuts with sugary or salty toppings or mixes as they lose their health benefits.

Incorporate Nuts Into Your Diet: • A serving size of nuts is a small handful or 1 ounce • Sprinkle nuts on your salad for added crunch • Roast raw nuts and add your own seasoning to reduce salt intake • Add nuts to stir fry vegetable dishes

In 1974, Mrs. Ann Howell felt the need to answer the call of service to others in the Thibodaux community. She and 18 other women founded the Thibodaux Service League with the purpose to be educational and charitable. Forty-three years later, the Thibodaux Service League is thriving with a membership of over 80 women. “I believe we are all on this earth to do unto others,” shares Jamie Gros, president of Thibodaux Service League. “To be a part of an organization that allows me to do that on a daily basis and the opportunity to see the people that need our help, its very rewarding.” Thibodaux Service League works with around 11 community organizations such as Crossroads, Bayou Country Children’s Museum, the Lafourche Juvenile Justice Center to complete service projects. Each member is required to complete 300 hours or six years, which ever occurs first. “We are able to have 80+ women of all different talents and abilities come together to serve,” says Jamie. “Everyone finds their niche, that need that calls out to them. EATING HEALTHY DURING

THE HOLIDAYS You’ve heard it time and time again: All things in moderation. Never is this truer than during the holidays. With the plethora of parties comes the all-too-real possibility of overeating. What can you do to avoid packing on pounds at end-of-the-year gatherings? Strategize now to avoid weight gain during the holidays.

calories. Hummus is an excellent option, as is veggie salsa.

Forget Fried Foods If you find yourself reaching for a fried chicken finger, stop! Fried foods are loaded with flavor, so the urge to binge is understandable. But if you want something equally satisfying, go for high-protein, low-fat items like shrimp cocktails, roasted turkey, or Swedish meatballs.

Plan Ahead If you know you’re going to be making the rounds at multiple holiday gatherings and parties, consider having a healthy snack at home. If you show up at a gathering starving, you’re far more likely to make poor choices, and overeat.

Say “No” to Fatty Foods Avoid high fat foods as much as possible. Many traditional holiday and party foods are loaded with fats, including creamy dips and cheeses. If you can’t resist, allow yourself just a few bites.

Load Up on Veggies At almost every holiday party, there is at least one tray filled with fresh vegetables and fruit. Load up your plate with these items first. Also, skip the dip, which is typically loaded with extra

Avoid Alcohol Another thing to skip (or limit): adult beverages. Many alcoholic holiday drinks, including eggnog, hot cider, and fancy mixed cocktails are loaded with empty calories. Stick to light cocktails or spritzers, which tend to have less calories.

Get Moving The holiday dinner table or party spread doesn’t have to be a battlefield. You can and should enjoy a few indulgences. Prepare now for the holiday season, and up your exercise routine a bit. Exercising certainly helps stave off weight gain, but it also helps lower stress levels – which tend to soar around the holidays.

Bridging Bayous THE

BY DREW MILLER | PHOTO BY CHANNING CANDIES

Extracurricular, travel, and home services such as tennis lessons, tour guides, and home repair aren’t cheap. Many people micro-manage their budget to afford for these services. Fortunately, there is a new system of banking that has made its way to the Terrebonne-Lafourche area.

Jennifer has first-hand experience using the timebanking system. She earned her hours by working in the concessions at E.D. White Catholic High School, one of the 50 current schools, businesses, churches, and organizations that are part of the timebanking system. Another member posted on the website that she liked to refinish furniture and Jennifer asked for her services to complete an unfinished kitchen table she had previously purchased. The volunteer picked up the table from Jennifer’s house and refurbished the table and all it cost her was the price for the brushes, Polyurethane, and some hours she had stored in her timebank.

Timebanking is a time-based currency that is bringing communities closer together across the United States. Members of timebanking communities volunteer their hours to help others and in return they receive the same amount of hours as credit to their account. They can then “cash in” those hours earned to receive the services they need. Jennifer Gaudet, Associate Director for Individual and Family Assistance for the Diocese of Houma-Thi- Although the timebank focuses more on a regional area of bodaux, has brought the system to the area with the participants helping each other, there is what is known as “intertrading” with other timebanks worldwide. Bridging the Bayous Timebank. “People who ordinarily volunteer for their churches, their schools, their museums, their foodbanks, and other places can earn timebanking hours while they are volunteering their time,” Jennifer says. The Bridging the Bayous Timebank that was just officially established in September, already has over 60 members with another 43 people in the waiting pool. Each member must pass a background check, complete the Diocesan Safe Environment Training Program, and sign the Bridging the Bayous Timebank Liability Form before they can join. Once someone becomes a member, they can post services needed or services offered on the program’s website. Although Bridging the Bayous Timebank is a Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux program, it is open to all faith denominations.

“For example, there is one timebank located on the Hawaiian Islands,” Jennifer says, “If I happen to go on the island that has the timebank then I can go on a tour of the islands and it’ll only cost me timebank hours. So I’ll be saving a lot of money.” Jennifer hopes the timebank not only brings in people who are willing to volunteer hours so they can receive services, but who also want to bring relief to those in need, such as the sick and elderly. “Say there is someone who is sick and asking for house cleaning help,” she says, “You’re doing more than just house cleaning. The weight of not being able to do is lifted. They feel clean which helps make their illness more bearable because they don’t have the feel of dirt. When I was a kid, we always had a calendar hanging from a nail on a wall in the kitchen. Mostly, the calendars were large posters that showed a country scene, or a religious painting, or a shrimp boat with its great, raised trawls docked alongside the bayou. Always, the calendar was printed as an advertisement with the name, address, and the telephone letters and numbers of a local insurance company, grocery store, funeral home, or even a church. Stapled at the bottom of the poster were little sheets of tissuelike, tear-off paper printed with rows and columns of unadorned numbers—always black, except for holidays which were printed red. Back then, you didn’t need a large square space to jot down all the things you needed to do in 24 hours. Calendars were always important in December because in south Louisiana near the Gulf it was one of the only ways to remember that Christmas was coming. For some of those kid years, you couldn’t depend on the normal seasonal indicators, like the backyard grass turning brown, or leaves falling from the trees, or the thickness of your cat’s fur, or the solidification of potted meat in the cupboard. And there was no HBO show to remind you in advance that “winter was coming.” You really needed a calendar. So whenever mom tore November off the kitchen calendar and into history, we all could figure what was to follow 24 days later, despite unseasonably warm weather. To be convinced, however, all we had to do was listen to the night. I remember many times in the dark of December night how I’d sit up in my little bed near the open widow and rest my chin on the sill, waiting. Sometimes it was waiting for the mosquitoes to go to sleep. Other times it was waiting for the nighttime rain to by chance turn into snow. Many times it was waiting for my dad to come home from his off-shore shift. And each time, for the many years I lived as a kid there, it was waiting for the music. Up in the monumental tower of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church hung a series of 23 carillon bells that were pulled and released to toll and carry hymns and carols far across the night and into everyone’s boats and homes. Not some digitized music amplified from a spinning, silvery disc and pushed through loud-speakers, this was pure, resonant, true bell tones made from hammers striking bronze. Each tone of each bell rang out pure and perfect across field and pasture and lake

and bayou, heralding December night to the expanse of darkness and peace. It was profound. It was beautiful. It was, in a word, celestial. When your mind is free and clear to fashion a sequence of bell tones into a familiar hymn or carol without the distraction of singing, the tunes become memories all the more lasting. The Germanic majesty of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” as well as the somberness and glory of “Greensleeves” in the form of “What Child is This?” were favorites. And every year, in a place where it never snowed, screened in from not only mosquitoes but also the rest of the world, separated from my dad who was drilling some place far away, the words “...and ransom captive Israel / that mourns in lonely exile here...” always had special meaning. To this day, I still wonder how far away the echoes of those hymns and carols could be heard and who, like me, heard them. I remember later Christmases when the aging carillon began to fail. One or more of the bell tones could no longer be played, and so across the town we would hear “O come all ye ___ ful, joyful and ___ umphant,...” Those were the last days of that beautiful, celestial Advent experience, as, regrettably, the carillon would not be repaired. If you lived some place in the marshes surrounding Golden Meadow during that time, no matter how far away in the peace of December night, and no matter the weather or the girth of your cat, you would surely be convinced it was Christmastime.
