EDITOR’S NOTE |

MARY DOWNER DITCH • MANAGING EDITOR OF POV

SPRING TO IT!

Welcome to the second edition of The Southern Home, our annual Home and Garden edition! I looked back at my editor’s note from last March, just to refresh my memory and make sure I didn’t bore you with the same old stories–but to be honest, not much has changed when it comes to Home and Garden stories at my house! Sure, our interior décor has been updated a bit… in that my son Jackson is now into dinosaurs and Legos, particularly Star Wars. The tiny creations are all over our home, as his imagination runs wild and a galaxy far, far away is taken over by fierce creatures of the Jurassic era. While Jackson does have a play area where all his toys could be played with and then neatly stored, we prefer to play as a family in the center of the living room where there is room to spread out! As spring approaches, I am looking forward to longer days and digging in the dirt a little more. Spring might very well be my favorite time of year, as everything is fresh and green and life begins again. The birds return to our feeder, the flowers begin to bloom, and we spend more and more time outdoors in the backyard. My most favorite room in my home is actually my back patio and yard! I admit, our landscaping is in dire need of an overhaul. John and I are very lucky that Jackson has his own tools including a shovel and rake, and is more than willing to help dig a hole or two! He also enjoys watering the flowers, and inevitably his shoes, in the afternoons.

In this edition of PoV, we proudly showcase an expanded Chateau Chic. A stunning new construction in Thibodaux, the attention to detail in this farmhouse is amazing! From the furnishings to the flooring, from the lighting to the cozy nooks, there is no way any of us could select a favorite room! Choose your favorite as you flip through the story starting on page 18. Whether building a new home or renovating your existing space, you need look no further than the Bayou Region for help! Our special advertising section starting on page 29 provides you with a business showcase of local companies that are ready to help you with your next project! While artists often strive for perfection in their work, it was accepting the loss of perfection that allowed Caroline Boudreaux to create at her fullest. The artist, who was first instructed by her grandmother, has learned to let her paintbrush guide her. Explore the evolution of Caroline’s work beginning on page 44. Long ago, when furniture was all made by hand, caning was a common skill, used to create the seat and often the back of chairs. In today’s world, caning is a lost art, one that requires much skill, time and patience. But down in Cut Off, Gary Hebert helps to restore the past by sharing his learned skill of caning with others. Learn about the lost art of caning starting on page 54. The Southern Home is quickly turning into one of my favorite issues to produce. We hope you find inspiration for your own home within these pages! POV

SAY WHAT?

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR HOME AND WHY?

NACHO | MAN’S BEST FRIEND

“My favorite thing about my home is my dog room that I share with my sister Pepper. It’s where I get some of my best naps in. There’s dog wallpaper and even my own raised dog shower. Plus, we get treats in here!”

HAL | MANAGING DIRECTOR

“My favorite thing about my home is the feeling of comfort and ease I have when I’m there. There is no burden on me or pressure that I’m under at home. I like the peace of being with my family.”

RACHEL | ARTIST

“When we drew up our plans, I made sure to include a large front and back porch. My husband and I spend a lot of time outside watching the kids play, cooking, and throwing Frisbees for the dogs. (Plus is there anything better than sitting outside in a rocking chair with your coffee?) On the inside, I love our pocket doors separating the living room from the kitchen, our dining room with lots of windows and a record player on the buffet, our three girls’ ballerina pink bedrooms covered in stuffed animals, and the big rectangle island in the kitchen. On top of all that, I had my best friend Ellen Dominique as my interior designer. She moved away about 5 years ago, so having her design my home with me just makes me love it even more and makes me feel like she is here with me every day even though we have a couple of states between us.”

ANN | PARTNER

“My favorite two things about my home are the views of the sunset from my meditation garden and my beautiful statue of the Blessed Mother in my meditation garden.”

JOSH | GUEST SERVICES MANAGER “My stove! That Wolf keeps me fed and I like food.”

Inspired by a Southern Living Idea House known as the Farmhouse Revival, this Thibodaux farmhouse gets a modern twist and the results are remarkable. After falling in love with the floor plan and visiting the 2012 idea house in Senoia, Georgia, homeowners Heidi Brunet and Lisa Lautner were ready to put their signature on a traditional plan. Built by Chris Ledet Homes, this modern farmhouse features 6,600 square-feet, four bedrooms and four and half baths complete with an outdoor living area and pool. “Heidi clearly portrayed her vision of

the farmhouse through various pictures and descriptions. It was evident she was prepared and did her homework down to every detail,” says Paul Ledet, president of Chris Ledet Homes. An expertly styled front porch hints as to what’s inside and in true Southern fashion, convinces you to sit and stay a while. Upon entering the front door, a central hallway illuminated with natural light pulls you in. To the left is the heart of the main level, an open kitchen, dining and living area where Heidi and Lisa enjoy entertaining friends and family. Upstairs, guests feel right at

home in the cozy guest quarters, complete with a reading nook on the landing that doubles as another bed when company overflows. Throughout, the home is balanced with both dark and light elements for added visual interest and depth. Carefully chosen materials and furnishings that fit beautifully fit into the space pay homage to the simplicity and functionality of the farmhouse while playful patterns on walls and floors add a sophisticated and modern touch.

ALL THAT I LOVE The sweetest lady stopped me the other day, and she told me the kindest words any writer ever wants to hear.

Before you decide, talk to the Good Hands® people.

“I love reading everything you write,” she said. (Which is currently only this monthly column. I’m a bygone blogger who promises to pick the blog back up, only to watch it go dormant month after month, which has now turned into year after year.)

Now that you’ve moved into your new home, what’s next? Perhaps a new addition to the family. Or a new car or boat. Perhaps retirement. Talk to me soon about affordable insurance from Allstate to help meet the current and upcoming needs of your life.

She continued on. “I love how every story revolves around your kids.” But wait, I thought. I don’t always write about my kids. But then I scrolled back for a few months, and reread some of the recent writings. I tend to feature a different kid each month. Sometimes multiple kids per month.

Call or visit me first for a complimentary protection review.

My honest goal this month was to simply find something else to write about so that readers would be pleasantly surprised by reading material on something other than the people in my home. I love to cook. So there’s that. But cooking leads to grocery shopping, and that invariably leads to kid talks. Like the fact that I’m going to need a second job to start paying for our grocery bill. Three teenage boys can truly eat more food than I ever dreamed possible.

Brian Mustin 985-873-1411

I love to garden. Like seriously love to garden. About a month ago, during a surprisingly beautiful harvest of broccoli, I found time to do several Instagram stories about my broccoli. A friend messaged me back on the Instagram story thread.

“I”m cracking up that your posts on IG are about broccoli - the broccoli blogger,” she said with a huge smiley face behind her words. There’s nothing funny about my broccoli to me. And maybe I should post more about my kids on social media. But when I see a huge head of broccoli in my garden, I just can’t even help myself from snapping a picture and posting it on an Instagram story.

I love music. I’m listening to music now even as I type these words. I’m a hummer by nature, and people often ask me what I’m humming, and I have no idea. But even music leads to kid discussion. The other day, one of my sweet girls said, “Mom, you should join the worship team at church.” I was flattered, and smiled. Then she followed it up with “You know all the words to the songs. You’d be great.” I didn’t

tell her that actually sounding good when you sing is a requirement, not simply knowing all the words. I love reading. My most recent read was “The Winter Garden” by Kristin Hannah. Why do I torture myself with books that will invariably make me cry and convince me of the depravity of mankind? I can’t stay away from historical fiction. But that too, leads to kid talk. My 12-year-old rode with me to pick up his sisters from dance the other day, and he proceeds to tell me about a book he’s reading. He was almost at the end. “Mom, he’s about to go on another death march. His last one, the Nazis only gave him half a loaf of bread, and he walked in the cold for days.”

He told me more details and my eyes began to water. I didn’t even have to read the book to feel everything he felt. Is 12 too young to read of death marches and concentration camps and the horrific ache of people who have lived before us? I love so many things. But at the end of the day, I guess I love my family most of all. So I write of the things I love. And that’s my people. There’s a few more people living here than I ever would have imagined. But at the end of the day, it’s exactly what I would want and what I’d do all over again. So this article without mention of kids just became filled with them again. Sorry, not sorry.

Perfect... Just

BY DREW MILLER | PHOTOS BY GABRIELLE FELD We work hard. We study. We apply makeup. We diet. We exercise. We overthink. We sacrifice. We do all of this and more to achieve freedom from fault or defect, otherwise known as perfection. However, there is a quote traveling around the internet—being pinned, posted and tweeted—that contradicts the definition of perfection. The words, attributed to Anh Ngo, read “Imperfection is a form of freedom.” Although one Thibodaux native had found commercial success and critical acclaim through her artwork, she still had an internal struggle with perfection. Now, after reinventing herself and her work, she embraces her imperfections and is free to create artwork that is more natural and true to herself. When Caroline Therese Boudreaux thinks back to her early childhood, she can’t recall the first time she picked up a paintbrush or pencil. “It’s just something I’ve always done,” she says. Caroline was fortunate enough to be born in a family that embraced the arts. Her grandmother, Mary Boudreaux, is another renowned artist here in the Bayou Region. Mary taught Caroline the fundamentals early on, but Caroline says she never felt pressure from her grandmother to live up to expectations. “She really taught me everything—my entire base of understanding of paints and different mediums,” Caroline says. “It was always an exciting and a fun thing that I wanted to do. I never really felt like insecure or pressured…I’m sure it had everything to do with the way she presented it and taught me.” Having a more introverted personality in her adolescent years, Caroline discovered she was always more comfortable traveling in the universes she created. “…And whenever I was younger, it was really just my way to escape and make up these worlds. Whatever I was obsessed with at the time, I could just get lost in that for hours, just drawing, painting and doing whatever,” she shares. “I just knew that it was going to be something that I did forever—in whatever capacity that was.”

That’s why for her choosing to study graphic design at LSU was a “no brainer”. After receiving her bachelor’s, Caroline went on to have a celebrated career in graphic design and digital art, working for such companies as Tilt, Ann Connelly Fine Art, Southern Marsh Collection and currently, Level Homes.

“Don’t give up on trying to find your thing, even if it takes years. When you get there, it feels so good and is so worth it.” But before she received recognition in the digital art realm, she had achieved local fame in the traditional art scene—painting highly sought-after pet portraits. “I kind of became a pet portraitist by accident,” Caroline laughs. “I did one for a friend as a gift and posted it to Facebook— maybe 2007—and that was it. I posted that, and from there I had eight years of pet portraits.” Caroline’s vibrant, expressive yet detailed pet portraits were an internet sensation, featured in various magazines including Point of Vue and kept the young artist extremely busy for years. “The most satisfying part of that was the response I would get from people whenever I would show them the paintings for the first time. People would get so excited; some would cry,” she remembers. She loved the joy emitting from her clients after receiving their portraits. Yet, the local creator still strived to create something new and “perfect” that more reflected her own

personal style. “I tried many different styles, but everything felt too structured, planned and unnatural. The perfection I strived to achieve with everything I created was exhausting and sometimes paralyzing,” says Caroline on her website, carolinetherese.com. “It wasn’t until I decided to completely let go and welcome imperfections as a beautiful and necessary part of the process, that I began to find my way.” Her growing appreciation for interior design, self-exploration and letting go of her need for perfection led her to create her current magnum opus—art often mimicking the human figure, plants and egrets. “Loose brush strokes, dripping paint, movement and imperfections worked together to create rich artwork, full of depth and character that I was proud to call my own,” she says. Now, Caroline shares this more liberating artwork with others—hoping to bring the same peace and happiness she found in creating these images to her customers. March 2019 46 povhouma.com

“I create these things because I want to create an environment that people feel good in and feel proud of…And I feel like art can just change a space completely,” Caroline expresses. “Even if you don’t know if you have the space for it—if you love it enough— you’re going to find a space for it and be happy that you have it.” Her work is regularly displayed at Thibodaux’s House of Fashion. Her next public showing is on March 9 at Mid City Makers Market in Baton Rouge. Art enthusiasts can follow Caroline on Instagram: @carolinethereseart and/or sign up for emails on her website. “I want to reach out and find the people who would love what I do,” she shares. “Don’t give up on trying to find your thing, even if it takes years. When you get there, it feels so good and is so worth it,” Caroline says to all aspiring creatives. “It is still difficult at times for me to share my work, but I can say there is no reason to be worried. If it makes you happy, share it…” POV

SPRING

GREENS With the first day of spring falling on March 20, we are ready for our gardens to be planted and start producing! Part of eating healthy should include enjoying what’s available locally and seasonally. March brings us new greens and delicious ones at that!

Asparagus, broccoli, brussel sprouts and artichokes are among the green things you can find at your farmer’s market. Lemons, limes and oranges start weighing down our trees and are ready for the picking!

ASPARAGUS AND SUN-DRIED CHERRY RISOTTO Ingredients • 1 bunch asparagus • 3 tablespoons olive oil or butter, divided • 2 cups arborio, risotto rice • 2 shallots, sliced thin • 1/4 cup white wine • 6-7 cups vegetable broth • 1/3 cup sun-dried cherries • 2 cups cooked chicken, optional • 4 thin slices proscuitto, diced (optional) • 3/4 cup Parmesan • butter • salt and pepper to taste

Directions 1. Chop the asparagus into short pieces, about 1/2 inch, leaving the tips whole. In a large

sauté pan, sauté the asparagus in 1 tablespoon of olive oil for about 5 minutes. Season with a little salt then transfer to a bowl. 2. In a separate pot, heat up the broth. 3. Add another tablespoon of oil to the same pan used for the asparagus and add in shallots. Cook for just a couple minutes on medium heat then add in rice. Toast the rice with the shallot for a couple of minutes. Add in the white wine and scrape up any browning from the bottom of the pan. Let 1/2 of the wine evaporate as you stir . 4. T hen, start adding in hot broth 1/4 cup at a time. Use a wooden spoon to continually stir. Add in more broth once it is almost all absorbed. Continue to stir and add in broth. The gradual addition of liquid is key so don’t rush this step! Ideally, you want to use just enough broth to cook the rice and no more. 5. Begin tasting the rice after about 12 minutes to gauge how far it has cooked. Add salt and other seasonings as needed. Note: The risotto is ready when the rice is al dente (it still has a bit of chew) and the dish has the consistency of thick porridge. If you run your spoon through the risotto, the risotto should flow back slowly to fill in the space, like “la onda,” a wave that slowly rolls to shore. 6. S tir in the asparagus, cooked chicken, proscuitto, and sun dried cherries. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 7. F inish the risotto with 1 tablespoon of butter and 3/4 cup parmesan. 8. Serve with additional parmesan, added to taste. March 2019 48 povhouma.com

RESTORING the

PAST STORY & PHOTOS BY CASEY GISCLAIR

Cut Off native Gary Hebert is a simple, modest Cajun-born man. So when asked if he’s an expert at crafting and working with his hands, he says no, then quickly turns the attention to something else. “How do they say it? Master of nothing, but a Jack of all trades?” he says with a laugh, before placing his hand on the top of a rocker. “I’m not an expert. I’ve just learned bits and pieces along the way.” His work, however, says a completely different story — the tale of a brilliant artist who has dedicated hours to produce caning on the seats of hundreds of rockers that have been purchased throughout the state. Gary practices the art of caning. With patience, skill, a little bamboo and lots of time to kill in his tight, cozy workshop, he weaves basket seating on rockers and other furniture pieces in his tight workshop — a skill he picked up decades ago. He says he has “no idea” how many rockers he’s worked on, but adds quickly that the entire hobby is a labor of love. “I enjoy doing it. It takes your mind off things,” Gary explains. “If you have a

headache, it’s a good hobby. You start on your pattern and by the time you realize it, your headache is gone. It’s time consuming. It takes your mind and puts it into a different world. And the product is just beautiful and it’s built to last. If you take care of it, it’ll last you 25 years, 30 years — maybe even closer to 40 years. It can last from a generation and be handed to the next.” It’s a hobby he picked up at a tough time in life. Gary says he’s always been handy working with his hands. He shares that he remembers a time as a child when his parents were remodeling their house. “And I’d get to skip school to help out,” he says. “He likes to take things apart,” wife Arlene adds. “He’s always liked to get have things into pieces so he could see how it all worked.” In the 1980s, Gary had a severe back injury while working, which sidelined him from traditional labor and kept him in the house more often than he’d have liked. As he recovered, he read woodworking magazines and saw an advertisement from Tulane for caning. He sent off for a brochure, did a little research and then it clicked. “I said, ‘I can do this,’” he shares. “So I’ve been doing it since then — on and off ever since.”

March 2019 56 povhouma.com

The process of weaving starts with supplies, talent, patience and a pattern. Gary says some of his patterns are uniform, while he comes up with others on the fly while he works. The supplies include bamboo, which Gary purchases while shopping different markets throughout the country. He explains the hobby is becoming more difficult to sustain because of the cost of the product. “People are getting scared of the price,” he says. “The cost of the bamboo has gone way up. It’s hard to get out of it what you put into it, but that’s OK sometimes because when you like to do something, it’s not always about the money anyway — it’s about you doing something you love.” Gary showed off a rocker he displays in his home — a beautiful piece that’s both decorative and comfortable. When asked how long the project took, he says modestly, “about 24 hours.” Arlene immediately warns that her husband’s modesty is a bit deceiving. “It takes weeks,” she laughs — denying her husband’s notion. “It takes 24 hours — if you work straight through without stopping,” Gary adds, specifying his earlier statement. “You do a few hours here, a few hours there. Before you know it, it all adds up and it consumes you.” Gary is in his upper 60s now and when asked how much longer he plans to perform his hobby, he said he will do it as long as God allows. He and his family operate Restoring the Past — a small, home-run business that offers his service to the public. Gary says he’s printed business cards and used social media to showcase his work, but adds the best advertising in a small community is high-quality good work. “People get a rocker, tell people they were satisfied and it all goes from there.” POV

BY JOHN DOUCET

DYLAN IN

THIBODAUX As it turns out, when John Steinbeck visited his friend and fellow novelist, T.I. St. Martin of Houma (as told in our November 2018 issue), he wasn’t the only future Nobel Prize winner to visit PoV country. Thirty-one years ago this month, Bob Dylan visited Thibodaux. Yes—that Bob Dylan, the one-andonly Bob Dylan, the “freewheelin’” Bob Dylan who gave us songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “The Times They are A-Changin’,” “All Along the Watchtower,” “Lay Lady Lay,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” and seemingly ten thousand others. And in case you missed the big announcement, Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature for, according to the prize committee, “having created new poetic expression within the great American song tradition.” He’s the first musician in history to win the prize and only the 11th U.S. citizen to win since the awards began in 1901. And so, his name joins a list that includes some pretty famous Americans known by single names: Hemingway, Faulkner, of course Steinbeck, and now Dylan. I remember being at a writer’s conference on Granville Island in Vancouver, British Columbia, when the award was announced. I was listening to a session of poets reading and discussing their work when the topic of Dylan’s Nobel was raised. All the poets there were angry— jealous, it seemed. In a world and time when poetry audiences are very small, most of them will never profit much from their writing or leave the world with even one memorable verse. And here’s a guy, who’s not really a literature guy, who’s sold 150 million records. “Who needs that million-dollar prize, me or Bob Dylan?” one of the poets yelled to the amused audience. “Yeah, I want a gold medal, too!” another one said. “For sure I can make a better-sounding poetry record than he can,” a woman poet claimed. A Dylan supporter in the audience yelled back to her, “It ain’t just the croaking, babe!” I didn’t see who said it. I presume it was a human, though it could have been a frog. It was a rainy day on a soggy island, after all. It was a fair and rainless day, however, when Dylan visited Thibodaux. In the spring of 1988, Dylan was recording an album in uptown New Orleans—not far from Audubon Park. As he described in his memoir Chronicles, Volume One (published in 2004), he grew tired of the “murky” surroundings and decided that he “needed to get out of town.” That’s when he jumped on a borrowed Harley, biked across the river over the Huey P. Long Bridge, and headed west along Highway 90. When he reached the crossroads at Bayou Lafourche, he needed to

decide on a travel direction. Of course, the answer was blowin’ in the wind, and he didn’t need a weatherman to know which way it blew. He turned north. “The town has a lot of streets with tree names,” Dylan wrote about Thibodaux. He “cruised along Pecan Street, then over to St. Joseph’s Church, which is modeled after one in Paris or Rome.” Here, you’ll need to forgive Dylan’s interpretation and memory. After all, he barely survived the 60s, and he was probably still celebrating the 60s when he arrived at Thibodaux in the late 80s. A littler farther on, on page 200, however, there’s a more accurate approximation of Thibodaux: “Nicholls State University, the poor man’s Harvard, is just up the street.”

Of course, Dylan didn’t get the university’s nickname quite right, and, to be honest, he actually spelled its proper name with only one “L.” But the fact remains that the reputation and renown of Nicholls is so strong that it stayed one of the remaining, meaningful synapses of Bob Dylan’s brain. And, ever watchful of the life of the working man, in re-inventing its nickname Dylan understood the profound reason why our university was ever built. Dylan biked back across Highway 90 to New Orleans that night and eventually completed, Oh Mercy, his first critically acclaimed album in many years. In his Nobel Prize speech decades later, he wrote of his life’s work that he didn’t know “what it all means.” That’s likely the same thought he had leaving PoV country in 1988, zooming past roadside vendors on Highway 90 selling “mirlitons,” “gratons,” and “fat crabs.” POV
