MARY DOWNER DITCH • MANAGING EDITOR OF POV

BON ANNIVERSAIRE! It’s ok, you can say it… We look a little bit older this month, right? A little more mature? Well, maybe not. But it is our birthday! Point of Vue published our first issue in April 2007. That makes us 12 years old! I love looking back at old issues of our magazine. You’ve got to know where you’ve been, to understand where you are, to be able to look to the future. (Thanks for that nugget of wisdom, Dad! And happy birthday to you, too!) We build upon our successes and learn from our mistakes. Over the course of our existence, we’ve done lots of learning, but even more growing! We are incredibly grateful for all the people along the way that have helped this magazine grow to be what it is today. Now, on to this month’s fantastic issue! While it might seem like our two stories this month are unrelated, at a closer glance I think you will recognize a common thread – providing comfort to those in need. Nancy Diedrich’s book, “Whenever a Child is Born,” explores the comforting idea that we are never alone. The longtime writer and counselor shares the idea that our guardian angels are always there. It provides comfort to both newborn parents and children that even in the darkest nights, someone is there with them. Read more about Nancy on page 24. Our office was all smiles and snuggles the day Bailey Mae stopped by for her interview. A certified therapy dog, Bailey Mae helps residents at The Broadway

Elder Living and Rehabilitation cope with their ailments and needs. A little snuggle, a comforting nudge on the hand, anything the residents need, Bailey is quick to provide. Read more about Bailey and her caretaker Courtney Carrere Sanford, on page 44. This month’s issue also features Open for Business, a small business showcase. We invite you to discover all that small businesses in our area have to offer. This magazine is so much more than just a job to me. I can’t explain to you how much I love what I do here every day! Bonnie and I often joke that PoV is our firstborn child. In a lot of ways, it truly is! Our whole staff were like new parents in the early days, complete with long, sleepless nights, and lots of winging it, hoping we were doing things right! As the magazine has grown, so have you, our readers and supporters. Thank you for sticking with us and helping us to raise our child. It truly takes a village and we are grateful for the support, from our staff, our advertisers and our readers. Bon Anniversaire, Point of Vue! Here’s to many, many more! POV Special note: There’s one more celebration in our house this month! My husband John and I are celebrating six years of marriage. John, thank you for all your support!

LIFE IN THE COUNTRY BY BONNIE RUSHING | PHOTOS BY MISTY LEIGH MCELROY

While Ray and Alison Reeves didn’t think life in the country was in cards for their family of five, after much consideration they decided to make Ray’s family home and property theirs. Looking back on the adventures of the renovation process and the memories they’ve made over the past 10 years since they moved in, they couldn’t be happier. Situated on 40 acres, the home is shaded by oaks that are more than 100 years old. A guesthouse, pool and barn are tucked behind the house on either side. Providing additional living and entertaining space, the guesthouse and pool are frequently used for parties, fundraisers and meetings. On a more frequent basis, Ray and Alison

enjoy relaxing and boiling seafood in the space with their children Rayford, Harrison and Baley, and their friends. What started as a four-month renovation turned into a year and half long project. “Originally built by my father-in-law, the home had lots of rooms including a formal dining room and in kitchen dining area, a kitchen, a sunken living room, formal living room and library, and all of the bedrooms and bathrooms,” shares Alison. “During the renovation, we knocked down several walls to create a more open floor plan. We now omit have one very large kitchen with dining area, two living areas and a bar downstairs.”

Looking back on the renovation process, Alison admits, “It was a huge adventure with many obstacles! And life in country came with some interesting encounters. During the renovation, we encountered honeybees, wasps, wood boring beetles, a chicken laying eggs on the mantle, a peacock that got trapped inside and even birds flying down the chimney. We never knew what we were going to get when we got we walked in. But, we had a lot of good times!” As the renovation evolved, the Reeves worked with their carpenters including Jerome Yesso and are still pleased with the outcome. Leaving all of bedrooms upstairs, the Reeves decided to install an elevator for convenience both now and in the future. “Some days we started with blue and ended up with orange, or we thought about brick and wound up with something else, but we are very happy with the choices we made,” shares Alison.

A casual, French country style was achieved by using items that were found in the original home as well as collections of family china, figurines and artwork. Reclaimed wood from an old barn on the property that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina was also used throughout the home both unfinished and milled, depending on the application. Completing the French country decor in the kitchen is a custom French range–Alison’s 20th anniversary gift from Ray, which they celebrated during the renovation. POV April 2019 20 povhouma.com

THE UNFINISHED

SENTENCE My oldest daughter and I had been at the funeral for about 10 minutes when he sought us out and found us. I saw him walk by before he saw us. It was easy to tell he was looking for someone, but I didn’t think he was looking for my 10-year-old daughter or myself. But when he made eye contact with us, he stopped in his tracks and made his way over to us, saying “I have something I need to give to your girls.” I couldn’t imagine what it would be. He hurried out of the main room and left, leaving my daughter and I wondering what would be so important to give to us on this day? We were at the funeral home, remembering our sweet neighbor and church friend. She and I spent hours together working on missions projects, and our relationship was one that spanned decades, but was the sweetest of friendships. My girls felt the same about her. The fact that she lived in our neighborhood and was only a bike ride away for my kids was just a little extra icing on top of an already sweet friendship.

Reputation By Recommendation

The cancer diagnosis surprised us all, and progressed rapidly, giving months between the diagnosis and death. So my oldest daughter and I were at the funeral, remembering and loving the lady who had always loved us so well. But what could her husband of almost 45 years be giving to my girls on this day? We both waited, and wondered. He came back just minutes later, with a small note card in his hand. “This was the last thing she ever wrote,” he explained. He pressed the card into my daughter’s hand and went back to the front, where people waited to greet him and give him their condolences. My daughter and I sat down, hands shaking, eyes filling with tears, and read the last words of our sweet friend. The note started out thanking my girls for the Valentine’s Day cards they had decorated her bedroom with. The cancer had left her bound to her bed and they drew about a dozen Valentine’s Day cards with Bible verses and hearts for her room. When the card got to the middle, she said “I hope you always …..” And that’s where the card stopped.

985-492-2473 7884 Main Street Houma LA, 70360

The shaky handwriting ended, the note incomplete, cancer stealing her life before she could finish her last written words. Like death always does, it stole away life mid-sentence, leaving the last sentence undone and incomplete, and leaving us wondering what she would have written had she finished.

A / C & R E F R I G E R AT I O N OUR CUSTOMERS ARE THE COOLEST!

As I write these words, it’s been exactly one year since her passing from this life to the next.

Just Imagine...

We saved the note. Most importantly, we saved her memory in our hearts. When she finished reading the letter, my curious daughter had so many questions: “What does she hope we always do, mom? Why didn’t she finish the sentence? What would she have wanted for us?” I couldn’t answer a single question. I whispered to my daughter the only words I knew to be true. “I have no idea what she wanted to say to you girls, but I know she would have hoped for the best for you, and that you would give your best to others, like you gave her.” The unfinished sentence still rings in our ears even a year later. Have we lived up to what she hoped for us? Have we loved as well as she would have wanted us to? Have my girls been as kind to others as they were to her? There’s so many ways to end her unfinished sentence. So many phrases that would have completed the sentence and shared her dreams for my girls. Instead, we are left wondering what she wished, but knowing in our hearts that we can complete her sentence with loving others well and sharing our hearts with friends like she shared her heart with our family. The unfinished message is a story we are still writing. She would have loved to know we are finishing her sentence in the best ways we know. That we are living with her words ringing in our ears and filing our hearts. POV

If we polled parents here in the Bayou Region, the day they first took their newborns home is sure to be at the top of their happiest moments in life. But as that new bundle of joy entered their home, so did certain anxieties. For children, separation anxiety is common in those ages six months to three years old. This, according to kidshealth.org, can lead to the more serious separation anxiety disorder — which can cause children to have panic symptoms, nightmares about separation, fear of sleeping alone and/ or excessive worrying. Perhaps less talked about but still fairly common is parental separation anxiety that can develop as early as the pregnancy stage. Like a child’s separation anxiety, it too can cause excessive worrying and fear — but in a parent when they are away from their child. Nancy Diedrich — local author, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, among other titles — published a children’s book in 2017 that tells children and reminds adults that they are never truly alone. When the Plaquemine-native moved to Thibodaux to earn her degree in education from Nicholls State University, she sought a career teaching English, as she always had a passion for literature. “I love to read and love to write,” Nancy says. “I tried to make it interesting enough so my students would enjoy it too.”

As a young teacher at E.D White Catholic High School, where she taught for 11 years, Nancy was in charge of various student organizations and found herself often interacting with students who sought her counsel. Gaining a new appreciation for helping others by listening and talking, she returned to school—this time to earn a master’s in psychological counseling. Nancy later opened a private practice in downtown Houma. Not only was she willing to counsel those who walked through those doors, but she also did marriage and

family therapy for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux during her 25-year counseling career. “When I was a younger counselor, responsibility was a heavy feeling…I guess it hurt me to see so many people in pain,” Nancy recalls about her early years in counseling. “The good part was that we were helping them work through their pain. But initially when people first come in and present their problem, it’s sad…heartbreaking sometimes.” However, Nancy says she enjoyed her entire counseling career and the differences

she made in so many lives in the area. “I retired last year and really miss it. Counseling is a very positive occupation. You can see the difference in your clients when they are sitting in front of you,” she says. “I had to keep them motivated to do it themselves, so they’d be proud when they did get through it.” The longtime writer (producing relationship articles for the Bayou Catholic during her career with the Diocese) knew she wanted to publish children’s books when she started writing stories for her seven grandchildren. “…Angels wait anxiously and with great excitement to see which one of them will be chosen to be the guardian angel of a child that is to be born,” reads the synopsis of the book on amazon.com. “…The story comforts parents with the knowledge that their baby is a special gift from heaven to them, and that they will never be alone raising their child, and that their child will never ever be alone in life.”

For parents who read the book, it offers solace — mainly for those with newborns. “A new parent is terrified to leave their baby in a room by themselves…” Nancy says. “It’s a comforting book for parents. I didn’t intend it to be, but that’s what it’s turning out to be…” Now with the success from “Whenever a Child is Born” and her continuous love of writing, the hardworking author is currently working on a children’s Christmas book and an adult book that focuses on the betterment of relationships. Her career can be followed at nancydiedrich.com. “…A million ideas come into your head [when writing]. But finding one that has a niche is the key,” Nancy shares. “That happened to me accidentally. For this book, the niche was a new baby, new mother, new family, new everything, and that is what the publisher grabbed at.” POV

Since it was released in 2017, “Whenever a Child is Born” — which was illustrated by local artist Chris Diket — has been comforting parents and their children, especially those families here in the Bayou Region. She has read the book to children at several local Catholic schools. “They love the pictures; they love the story. It gives them an image of what maybe someone had told them, but they didn’t have an image for,” Nancy expresses. “I find it’s been so well received. I’m so happy about it.”

With Alzheimer’s being a disease close to her heart—seeing it affect her family members at a young age— Courtney joined the Alzheimer’s Association. During a trip to Washington D.C. for the organization, she learned about therapy dogs from a professional in the field. “…One of the things that this lady talked about was pet therapy and how soothing animals are. And she went through this whole spiel about different things that you can do with dogs, or really with any type of pets,” Courtney remembers. “I was like, ‘Gosh, that would be amazing for this area!’” Last year, Courtney bought one of the Golden Retriever puppies her neighbor had bred. After years of researching therapy dogs, Courtney knew this dog would be a great fit for The Broadway.

PREVENT COLON CANCER WITH REGULAR SCREENINGS

Colorectal cancer, often referred to as “colon cancer” is the third leading cause of cancer-related death for men and women in the United States. However, due to early detection including screening, the death rate from colon cancer has been decreasing for several decades.

Why is colorectal cancer screening so important?

Regular screening is one of the most powerful defenses against colorectal cancer. Screening can detect colon cancer in the early stages, before it has spread, and can make treatment more successful. In fact, due to the slow development rate of polyps (non-cancerous growths that can develop into cancer), regular screening can even prevent colon cancer as doctors can find and remove the polyps before they become cancerous.

Screening guidelines for early detection

Unfortunately, only about 1 in 3 people in the US who should be tested for colon cancer have been screened. Who exactly should be screened, and when? • According to the American Cancer Society, people of average risk of developing colon cancer should start regular screenings at age 45. This can be done either with stoolbased or visual test (colonoscopy) and should continue through the age of 75.

• For those age 76 to 85, the decision to be screened should be based on that person’s preferences, overall health, life expectancy and prior screening history. • People over age 85 should no longer get a colorectal cancer screening.

Signs and symptoms of colon cancer

In the early stages, there are usually no symptoms or signs of colon cancer (making regular screenings even more important). When symptoms are present however, they may cause one or more of the following: • Change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation • A feeling of needing to have a bowel movement not relieved by actually having one • Rectal bleeding • Cramping or abdominal pain • Fatigue or unexplained weight loss It should be noted that many of these symptoms can be caused by conditions other than cancer so it is important to see your doctor right away so the cause can be determined and treated, if needed.

If you have questions about screening for colorectal or any other type of cancer, please contact the Cancer Center of Thibodaux Regional at 985.493.4008.

THE SECRET LIFE OF

CRAWFISH How fortunate we are. We’re in the middle of crawfish season which is in the middle of Lent. For us mudbug-loving Cajuns of PoV country and all our out-of-town converts, it’s admittedly not much of a sacrifice to abstain from meat on Fridays and Holy Days when you have crawfish available and when you consider it a seafood. Far be it from me to remind folks that crawfish are freshwater animals and not really “food from the sea.” They’re more a “swampfood” or a “pondfood” than a seafood. But closer be it from me to share other information about the official State Crustacean of Louisiana. After a spicy and engorging meal of boiled crawfish with friends and family, you’ll (hopefully) find yourself struggling with soap and water to remove crawfish boil spice, stain, and aroma from your hands. And you’ll ask yourself why? After all, it’s not so socially unacceptable if everyone is stained and smelly, right? A better reason, then, would be to get your fingers clean before handling this and then next issue of our magazine wherein you’ll find revealed on these keepsake pages secrets of the lives of crawfish that you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask. Crawfish are found in nearly all corners of the world. Not all corners of the world eat them, however. In fact, some may actually eat these swamp dwellers only in corners, hidden from the less muddy entrées. Among the 500 different species around the world, crawfish range in size from the 1-inch long Tenuibranchiurus glypticus to the giant Australian river crawfish, Astacopsis gouldi. How big is giant? Imagine driving up to an old gas station refurbished as a seafood market along a bayou highway to buy a 40-lb sack and getting only four crawfish. That’s how big Astacopsis is. You’d need a carving knife at your next boil or étouffée—unless it carves you first! Fortunately, our favorite species here in Louisiana, Procambarus clarkii—the red swamp crawfish—is a much more manageable size. The 2-to-5 inch P. clarkii accounts for 80 percent of all crawfish produced in the U.S. today, and 70 percent of all that is eaten in right here in Louisiana. Historical records show that commercial crop of crawfish was harvested in Louisiana as far back as 1880—23,000 pounds produced and worth about $2000. Today, the crop is 150 million pounds and worth $300 million. Speaking of historical records, crawfish ancestry is long. Though they won’t find distant relatives by searching Ancestry.com like us, they can find relatives fossilized in rocks that are at least 175 million years old. Those rocks are from the days when the continents were different

shapes, were actively drifting away from one another, and when dinosaurs roamed them. Take a look at any artist rendering of dinosaurs in the Jurassic Period and you’ll quickly understand why crawfish learned to burrow in the mud.

THEIR FUTURE

Create YOUR MASTER

QUALITY and LUXURY BEDROOMS and MATTRESSES and GREAT PRICES!!!

Not all species of crawfish like to burrow, however, but P. clarkii certainly does. They dig into mud using their legs and mouth for about three feet and then carve out a waterholding living chamber at the bottom. Those little mud chimneys you see in canals and backyards are excavation spoils from their burrowing projects. Crawfish chimneys are useful not only as a nearby place to rid the burrow of excavated mud but also to both confuse hole-seeking ground predators and challenge aggressive lawn-mowing humans. Enterprising golfers and football kickers have also found them useful. Inside the living chamber is water and a collection of dead leaves and other dead organic matter. Crawfish like to pinch and chew dead and decaying plants and animals. In fact, when our favorite French-named yellow wildflowers are done blooming and shrivel to die, they fall and become a favorite fixture of the crawfish diet. Speaking of diet, crawfish in hard times eat anything. Ironically the, cob corn, potatoes, sausage, garlic, and lemons you add to a crawfish boil would actually be nibbled by the crawfish if nutrient levels are low in the burrow. What else might they eat? Pour the chianti and call Jodie Foster because lambs will go silent, as you’ll read in Part 2 next month. POV
